Early in my career, we were still of the opinion that opioid use dependence or a narcotic dependence was very rare, addiction was rare and that an opioid or narcotic would not be addictive. That was based on some studies that were published. Companies said these are great, these are wonderful. They knew they were addictive and they did not say anything about it. I think some of these drug companies, some of the people that made these decisions should go to jail. I dont mean a fine. They should be in jail. Everyone is affected by this crisis. I have several patients who have children or siblings who are struggling with opioid use disorder. I have seen how it impacts them as well. When i was about 13, my mom called her dealer. We need better resources for people who have opioid abuse disorder. It needs to be something that is available quickly. We need to have better regulations like we have now where we are monitoring peoples peoples prescriptions. Is there a simple panacea to solve the problem . No. It is the individual. The police. The people in charge. Parents and doctors and hospitals. And yes, the drug manufacturers. The smaller states are not getting enough of these grants to make an impact. To really be part of the solution. We offer a chance for someone who was an addict, you can come to the police and say i am an addict and i need help.
