Them . Senator mcconnell do you work here . Reporter yes, sir. Senator mcconnell we are the elected representatives of the American People. To walk it through again. We laid down a bill as a result of consultation with republican members on key committees. We invited our democratic friends to join us by sunday of this week. We had a bipartisan bill as a starting place. Then, the speaker and the democratic leader came into my office on sunday and that slowed down the process, but it had already begun on a totally ipartisan basis. Thats what we do here. We are elected to get results. Reporter my question about the public. Senator mcconnell and i well, the publics watching all of it through you and the debates on the floor. This bill is no different than any other bill. This is the way all bills are developed. What was different about it is was totally bipartisan from eginning to end. We pivoted from impeachment to 1000 on this rescue package. This was about as flawless as you could possibly be. We had input from everyone, all over the country, all parts of ur society, from nonprofits to profits, all going to their elected representatives coming nto these discussions. This is a classic way you write legislation in a democracy. Yeah. Reporter at the same time, you and schumer didnt seem to interact with each other. You were wailing on pelosi as if she did not have a right to have any sort of imprint on this bill. Senator mcconnell i know youre paid to find something wrong with almost everything, but its not much to argue about when people who are i can answer it. Ill be happy to answer it yself. We pivoted from one of the most partisan exercises you could ever be engaged in to a bipartisan 1000, 2 trillion rescue package for the country. Not much to complain about on process when you get that kind of an outcome for the country. You all have a good break, and well see you when we get back here. Hopefully weve bent the curve on this pandemic by then. Org] senator schumer i just got to catch my breath. Ok. Well, its a historic day because it matches a historic risis and our people are going needing help, they were crying out to us to get help. From Bernie Sanders to pat toomey, people came together to help the American People and thats a great sign. T shows you that this senate can function when the need is so real and so pressing. And im proud of my caucus. We had such unity. There was virtually no dissension and thats what enabled us to so improve the bill that was first put on the floor. Were very proud that we have established the marshal plan for hospitals and our health care system. Were proud we made the workers first. Ere particularly proud that in the bailout funds, theres accountability, theres oversight, theres transparency. None of which were in the original bill. So weve really done a good job and change this bill because we ere unified. And im glad the republicans realized that need. You know, the bottom line is very simple. When you have a crisis like this, a scourge that shakes us to our bones, private industry cant get you out of the problem. Only government can. And thats what we learned. And thats why we, democrats, were able to have so much success, because we believe in government to help people, we know its needed. We know that private sector, while so important, is not the end all and be all. And so this is a good ending. Twists and turns were enormous. There were some down moments, but those of you who kept asking me if we would get a bill, i always had faith we would because the American People demanded it. I said on the floor, this illness is so, so different and difficult. And so when we passed this bill on the floor of the senate, we didnt hug each other. We just waved from a distance. Thats where were at. Ready for your questions. Yes. Reporter mr. Leader, ill ask you the same question i asked leader mcconnell. Understanding this crisis is moving fast and you all need to move fast to deal with it, this vote happened tonight before the public was able to see this bill that is aimed to help them. There was virtually no public debate on what could be the largest deba b
