I want to thank you for i want to say and it is great what joe is doing. He is doing very well because people in this country do not want a socialist. My problem is why couldnt they have found somebody else to run on the democratic ticket because. Oe is struggling so many. Just when they would get up there, they would fight and argue between themselves and talk in front of each other and it was wonderthat you had to where these people come from. Couldnt the Democratic Party find somebody that could get up there and really talk about what they were going to do rather than fight and argue . This is robert out of baltimore, maryland, good morning. Caller i want to say i am a proud independent. I have been a lifelong democrat up until two years ago. For the most part, i have seen the hypocrisy of the dnc firsthand. With the whole situation with bernie in 2016 when they brushed aside all the progress bernie. Anders had been making they are their own i feel personally insulted that he pandered to the community. I am personally a sanders supporter. When you look at joe bidens speech patterns, clearly some degree of senility. 20,re seeing these issues 30 years ago. Does Bernie Sanders need to do now . Caller i think he needs to have stronger outreach to the africanamerican community. Thealize he appeals to younger demographic. His endorsement while that goes a long way, i am no big fan. I feel like a lot of Older Americans should be getting efreshed on civics ,. Host here is some of the headlines from front pages from. Hose 6 states big win. Rick is a democrat out of boston. Your thoughts on last night. I think Bernie Sanders should be booking tickets back the way he came from because nobody will put up with this socialism stuff. He has tried three times now. College kids do not show up when it is time to vote. For you think it is time Bernie Sanders to end his campaign, is that what you are saying . Caller he ran three times now. Democrats are going to do is wait for somebody that can beat trump. The only thing showing up are these young kids. Senior citizens need to be coming to his school or whatever for a refresher class. Tell them how to go out and vote when it is time to vote. In the Washington Times about the youth vote not turning out in the numbers Bernie Sanders needs in the 2020 primary, this is the political theater column in the Washington Times, so much for bernies secret weapon, young people are not voting. Bernie draws massive support from youngsters and he has the Mainstream Media tapped into the youth vote, but they do not vote. Only 14 of democratic voters in the super tuesday primaries were between the ages of 18 and 29. Fewer thange points the age group that make up 23 of the tuesday electorate. Voters between 35 and 64 at 35 . That is nearly five times as 18y voters age 45 plus than to 29. Is out of massachusetts as well. Thank you for taking my call. I am curious that they are going that thesomeone democrats tried to impeach thetrump for ukraine quid pro quo in joe biden did the same exact thing. I look at it as that whole impeachment hearing was a big hoax because of they were concerned about it they would not be electing someone that did the same exact thing and is on tape admitting he did that. That was for a campaign because he knew if that had come out about his son, his chances to run for president would have been host do you think we will hear a lot more about that issue if joe biden wraps this up as the nominee . Caller i think you will hear from some people in the media, not many at all because during the impeachment of donald trump and republicans were talking about joe biden doing the same thing and you did not hear too much from the Mainstream Media. They are not going to report it because they are going to try and save him. This isbelievable happening that you have two. Eople it was not even proven donald trump did that, there was a lot in the impeachment that proved he did not. There was a lot of other things going on. They impeached him for that, that joe biden did and the evidence is him saying he did it. No symptoms, no anything. Host the headline as we noted earlier from wall street journal, his tax proposal getting a cool reception among lawmakers on capitol hill, especially democrats concerned about his idea of a payroll tax cut and who that would benefit. This is Chuck Schumer after Senate Democrats had their own lunch meeting yesterday to discuss proposals on the table. [video clip]. I am going to be blunt we are very worried about the president s incompetence and lack of focus on fighting the spread of coronavirus. We believe his lack of focus is hamstringing efforts to address this public physis crisis and inflicting pain on the stock market. One word could describe the administrations response, incompetent. The best way to ensure Economic Security is to focus on fighting the illness and the spread of the illness. Ask any ceo today what they want most. I will bet they tell you they want the coronavirus to be contained and you know what does not help the spread you know what doesnt help stop the spread of the coronavirus . More Corporate Tax cuts. We are worried the president will Pay Attention to the special interest instead of the people. Here is a headline from the Washington Post that just came out. White house likely to pursue fed we federal aid dont have enough tests. People cannot determine if they are ill or not. They have to wait days and there are concerns with the Oil Companies that pierce the shale and get oil. Is that incredible . Let me tell President Trump what does stop the spread of steady, smart, scientific, and competent leadership from the government. President trump and his administration should be putting people before corporations and they should be focused on taking appropriate steps to keep the American People and their Economic Security safe. More there will be plenty today on capitol hill when it comes to the issue of the coronavirus and cspan cameras will be there this morning. A hearing on Coronavirus Response. I dont even like saying this about biden, but he has shown so many signs of dementia. I am not a doctor, but i experienced it with my parents 77, sooni said, i am to be and he shows all the signs of dementia. Do we want a person running this country with dementia . Ast before we make diagnosis, is there any democrat running that could have brought you back to the Democratic Party as a lifelong democrat . Caller absolutely not. President trump has done nothing but good things for this country. You dont have to like him as an individual. Personally, i dont care for his attitudes. He has done so many things and i am a veteran and he has done remarkable things for the veterans, let alone build up our military, which was depleted. Nobody seems to give him any credit. Do you have any more questions . I will answer them. 7 20 on the east coast. In indiana. E listening to the last caller, i have a little bit to say considering the children in mexico. There is nothing this man has he ishat shows me christian. I would never, ever vote for mr. Trump. Thank you. John, a democrat out of district heights, maryland. Good morning. Caller thank you, friend, good morning to you. Those republicans will eat joe biden alive. When Chuck Schumer was standing there talking about was how donald trump should put people ahead of corporations. That is what Bernie Sanders has been saying ever since he has they haven the no idea what democratic socialism is and i am ashamed. I am in africanamerican, 75 this people is talking about. Edicare for all he is talking about poor people. The old, homeless, unemployed and uneducated and the only thing donald trump is talking thet andy democratic and Democratic Party, they talk about joe biden like a dog during the debates. Host what is next for Bernie Sanders . Declined to make remarks last night after the biden and sanders camps canceled election rallies in ohio and cleveland. Joe biden went on to make comments. Caller he is not exposing joe biden to the people for who he really is. He is responsible for the iraqi war. Thebiden will not be president. Host this is more from Bernie Joe Biden speaking about Bernie Sanders and Bernie Sanders supporters. [video clip] we share a common goal and together, we will defeat donald trump. We will defeat him together. We are gene regenerating a democratic base, high school educated folks like the ones i grew up with in claymont not far from here. They are the reason joe and i got involved in the first place and the reason why i became a democrat so long ago. I cannot tell you from the bottom of my heart, i cannot tell you how much i appreciate the confidence they have shown in me. Host that is joe biden last night. Taking your phone calls last night, phone lines as usual. It is just after 7 30 and this is tulsa, oklahoma, a republican. I think biden is sick. It is clear he is not all there. He has dementia and he is not fit to be president. Host rather than making medical diagnoses on Live Television and what do you think what do youre . Think happens in florida when the primary race shifts . Do you think florida is more of a joe biden or sanders environment . Caller i dont know. I dont think either one of them is nie sanders as opposed to Bernie Sanders. That was my home except for the spain lived in europe in or the time i spent in monte carlo. Appreciate the call from oklahoma. We will go to louisiana. This is barbara, line for democrats. Good morning. Am a war baby i want to congratulate mr. Biden. Host why is he the answer to your prayers . Caller i pray people would stop fighting each other. They fight and fight and i just dont like it. Cash are you in for more fighting in the november elections . Doner i think it will be because i am a catholic. My family came on the mayflower. It is going to be done, my prayers will be answered. Here is President Trump weighing in on the democratic primary. Referring asntas, he does to elizabeth warren, working in conjunction with the Democrat Party destroyed the campaign of Bernie Sanders. If she would have quit three days earlier, sanders would have beaten biden. It would not even have been close. They also have two other losers to support sleepy joe. Your comments. F sandra on twitter saying vote for joe, he might seem boring to some of you, but he is reliable and honest. Mike in georgia, i givernie should wait the voters a chance to see biden and prove he has the mental capacity to be president. This from shannon. We see what happens when a moderate goes up against trump. It is a moderate showing cognitive trends. Taking your phone calls this morning on phone lines as usual. Democrats, 2027488000. Republicans, 2027488001. Independents, 2027488002. Via textose folks message mentioned the debate coming up and some changes you will be seeing at that debate caused by coronavirus, which is quickly changing the landscape of this 2020 primary in the general election as well. The story focusing on the disruptions coronavirus caused. The Democratic National committee announced there would be no Live Audience and virtually no traveling members of the news media to the president ial debate on sunday taking place in phoenix, arizona as we noted last night. Both candidates canceled their rallies in cleveland looking to what had been an effort to look ahead to next weeks primary in ohio. Both canceling those primary night rally. Sanders last night headed home to burlington, vermont. Independent, go ahead. Caller you asked a call or what Bernie Sanders could do to win the election. He needs to announce Bernie Sanders as Vice President and it would send a single sing signal to the dnc that they cannot pick winners or losers. Tuls why do you see advert as thelsi game changer . Caller they would not allow her into the debates. She is the only person out there saying we need to stop these stupid regime change wars. It would be an important thing, especially for us with an independent line that do not fall for the party stuff. The other thing i wanted to mention before i go was one of your other callers, they call up every day complaining about the children in cages. Obama built those cages. Lets not forget that. Host this is rob, good morning. Biden. I am for joe i think he has a clear understanding of the issues. I see the Trump Administration has insurance for seniors all mixed up. You dont know what choices to rich. Rump is for the the young people are coming out. F College Trump wants to do away with all of it and start all over again. Host in cleveland, tennessee, independent. Good morning. I am siding with biden. When obama was in office and biden was in office, we had people in the white house that could manage this Health Crises we have now. That has all been gutted and i would like for you to answer a couple of questions. Did the World Health Organization not have the test or did they have the test . I have been reading they did not have the test and the administration did not want to use those tests, so here we are. I wonder why we did not use the test the World Health Organization had in place. Host you say here we are and the president on capitol hill yesterday making his pitch for this big stimulus package. With the markets bouncing back and forth, do you think that is necessary . Host do you think testing would have stopped the outbreak any more or give a more accurate picture . Caller i think it would have given a much better, accurate picture. Here is what the picture looks like right now. We have been referring to this, Johns Hopkins university putting out there coronavirus dashboard of confirmed cases around the world. World. 20,000 around the the vast majority 81,000 in over 4000 deaths around the world. The dashboard also noting the total recovered and the numbers have been taking up throughout the week. Those green numbers, the 66,000 or so around the world that have recovered. Let me focus on the United States. On monday when we were having this conversation, the numbers were around 500 confirmed cases in the United States. Today it is 1039 confirmed cases. 29 deaths so far with 23 of those focused in washington and the vast majority of those focusing on a longterm care facility in the seattle area. Two deaths in california, one in new jersey and one in south dakota. Recovered numbers also starting to pick up in the United States. That is the picture we have and that has been changing by the day. The Democratic Party can beat trump. Joe biden should pick Bernie Sanders as a Vice President and both of them should stand together as one to beat the Republican Party. If joe biden is going to be the to run against trump, i would probably choose trump for another four years. If joe biden decides to take Bernie Sanders on as vice i am pretty sure bernies supporters would come out for joe. Host with all the criticism Bernie Sanders has made of joe biden and his support of past policies and his criticism of where he thinks joe biden would take the pop the party, do you think that is possible for them to come together for Bernie Sanders to become joe bidens number two . Caller not necessarily, but if they want to beat trump, they have to put aside their differences and pull together to overcome that obstacle. Of rivals getting behind joe biden, another former yang got on board the joe train last night. His support of joe biden coming while he was on cnn. The math shows joe is our prohibited nominee and we need to bring the Party Together and work on defeating donald trump in the fall. Told npr the organization is getting behind joe biden and guy cecil last night saying joe biden is going to be the. Emocratic nominee i hope others will join us in the fight. Guy cecil, the chairman of that group. About 15 minutes left in this segment of the washington journal. After that we will be joined by republican congressman dan user dan meuser. Is one clear take away from last nights standards, primary, sanders needs to drop out immediately. They have been attacking biden on basically misinformation campaigns very similar to what the Trump Campaign was doing in 2016. You are seeing them attack him using these lies about a stutter he has overcome for the most part. S about the iraq war more misinformation campaigns going on against joe biden, but more so you are seeing more vitriolic hatred than any other president ial candidate has ever stirred up in the history of the party. I saw a video a couple hours ago of a former sanders press secretary at a biden rally and the rally was stormed by sander supporters and they attacked her. She got hit in the back of the head with an ipad and slammed to the ground. This is fanning the flames of the Trump Campaign and giving them more and more ammunition. The whole thing of him calling his letter dementia. The news outlets reported trump is planning on using that attack in the general election. The longer sanders stays in the race, the more he is going to spoil the general election like he did in 2016. Host debbie in ohio, good morning. Ohio is one of the states set to vote next week. What do you think happens in ohio a week from today . Where are we in the democratic primary race . Caller i am going to go vote for President Trump and when i was listening to Chuck Schumer, the president has set out policies to give a tax cut to the end of the year for people that work so we keep our own money, but democrats are against that and nancy pelosi now has a ban chinae floor to from coming in or iran people from coming in. Democrats are communist. They are cheating now. They are cheating bernie and nie will not fight and t how are they fighting cheating . Caller everyone is circling around biden because they want to be in his cabinet because he cannot run the white house. He is not medically fit. Host ohio up next week along with florida, illinois, and arizona before the 4 states ,oting a week from yesterday march 17th, tuesday primaries. Lawrence next out of california,. Epublican, good morning lawrence, are you with us this morning . You have to stick by your phone. Sorry emma lawrence. Wrence. Y, laure am a biden. Vigilant hereery and i am making a callout to the national Democratic Party to springs, reen cove florida, this of the woods because it is heavily trumpers and the Democratic Party is very disorganized. We need some help. If you are listening, we need help in florida. Thank you. I wonder if you saw the circulating yesterday of joe biden getting into an argument on the issue of guns when he was in michigan touring one of the plants. Did you see that video . Caller i did not see that video, so i cannot comment. Bernienow is i hope supporters really come together joe biden. He is a good man and i feel safer with him than i do with trump. Everyone is better than trump. I would really appreciate if nancy pelosi and the national Democratic Party would come here and help us out because there are so many trumpers around me. It is very scary. On thatat is mary grace viral video. It was a cbs video. A couple different videos, but cbs video, the Republican Party thinks it might be helpful to them among the people who circulated it was the Rapid Response for the Republican National committee, his sleep yesterday about 10 40 in the morning circulating. This is joe biden at an Auto Assembly plant in michigan on tuesday. [video clip] i am not taking your gun away at all. You need 100 rounds . I did not say that. [indiscernible] host joe biden yesterday in michigan. About eight minutes left in this segment, we want to hear from you as we talk about what happened on primary day. Joe biden so far has racked up wins in 4 and it is a tight race in washington. This is rico out of maine. Good morning. I am calling to voice my almost outraged at the Democratic Party to have candidates that are possibly viable to run and not showcase them. You have asked several callers before was there any other candidate on the ticket and yet they say there is no one and yet you have gabbard sitting in the corner muted. This is the time i would think you would want some kind of change. Some kind of real move forward. Someone who can talk. His and get her ideas across. I may not agree with tulsa gabbard, but i assume you do not or bernie. Gabbard spouting out dreams that are impossible that they know will never happen. At least i hate to revert back to trump because i dont like his foreign policies. However, i hear nothing from democrats and it seems like a clique to me. When hillary early on in the picture came on, she said she had some kind of relationship with russians. After that, the media shut down is hitting the back streets to stay pertinent. Host currently has two delegates getting above the threshold in American Samoa and super tuesday. Here is the count right now on the Washington Post. 1991 delegates needed to win on the first ballot. They have joe biden right now at 785 and Bernie Sanders at 642. Still delegates to be allocated even from super tuesday, some counting still needs to happen in california and two races undecided. In washington, it is a. 3 differencepoint between sanders and biden. Boats to count. George in votes to count. George in pittsburgh. Caller good morning to all americans. I want to say this. As a republican, i am so embarrassed about trump and republicans are not even giving anyone else to run against. I am amanda of lincoln. I dont think a man should work iainst selfinterest and really think he is a viking host dave is next out of alabama, good morning. Caller good morning. I think now that we have status sad to say foris think werat party, i will probably never get national healthcare. I believe there is a whole lot of members of the Democratic Party trying to basically resurrect the Obama Administration, which is dead and gone and not coming back. Bidenhink by electing somehow they will connect to it and that is not the path for the Democratic Party of the future, i dont think. I think it is more of the same and we will get nothing from it, but the billionaires will be happy. That is about all i have to say. Host derek is next out of tennessee, independent. Good morning. Are you with us . Caller yes. Host go ahead. Caller hi. I just wanted to say the spent all of their time since trump has been president trying to get rid of him and they should have been worrying about their party and now they have no one to run. They want biden to win so that his Vice President will be the president because he clearly is too sick to be president. Host from tennessee saying i am a bernie supporter. However, it is obvious biden will be the nominee. I will vote for him over trump any day and urge my fellow bernie supporters to do the same. It is the only way to get rid of trump. Tom in new york, i am a republican, but i cannot support donald trump. Biden started back at the top of the Democratic Party and if he is the candidate for president , he earned it. Call. Time for one more frank, can you make it quick this morning . Caller yes. I listen to bidens speech last night and he talked about dignity and American Values and justice. As a politician, he supports up untilnborn babies the day of birth and he wants fact taxpayers to fund that. Host do you think abortion will be a big issue in the november general . Caller i am a former democrat, that is why i left the party. It really is the most important issue in the world. Host our last caller in this first segment of the washington journal. Washington journal continues. First, whats happening here on capitol hill amid the coronavirus outbreak . There was a story yesterday about some members complaining about a lack of institutional standards in the response and how offices should be responding, whether they should be a uniform response. What is your view on capitol hill . Guest well, we run our offices however, of course, when you have got a serious issue they are going to send it down some best practices and in many cases requirements to assure from an hr perspective that staff and all stay informed and stay safe. But we, theres a fair amount of rumors circulating, just as there are throughout many cities , society, certainly media and the news. But there are no real cases that have been, have been validated throughout the capital. Everybody is taking precautions. This is a busy place. We have got thousands of people coming in and out. Yesterday was one of the most busy days on the capital ever, some people felt. Certainly my office was jampacked, as was the capital. People are coming in. There are cancellations taken place. So, i think in the next few weeks we will likely see a downturn. But very much in general, rumors, we are doing a lot of communicating. I meet up on coronavirus at least twice a day. Last week i met with the Vice President twice. I met with dr. Fauci two or three times. I met with the former fda director, gottlieb. I also met with the former cdc director as well. We are staying updated and the resources of the government are in full force here. Half a dozen members self quarantining after possible exposure. , don buyer out of virginia, his announcement yesterday, a phone call on that ofry noted some 200 Members Congress are 65 or older. I know you are in your 50s, but what are the older members saying to you considering the risk for those over 60 . A number of those people met one individual at the cpac event, at which i was supposed to attend as well. Some of them have confined themselves, some did not. One yesterday kept giving tours because they experienced no symptoms after 5, 6, 7 days. The others are taking the measures that they think are in their interest and, you know, in the interest of the people. Realist. Im a believer in the data. The data is that the risk remains very, very low. The number of people affected by this thus far is wildly less , foroccurred 10 years ago instance, with the swine flu, where 12,000 people died and it barely made the news. Tens of thousands were afflicted. In ave to take this measured way and see where the outbreaks are. The fist bumping, the elbow bumping, i mean whatever you feel comfortable with is what people should do. I will tell you this, though, for the most part people are shaking hands. Host what is happening back home in your district in pennsylvania . Or 12elieve we have 11 test positive people out of a 13. 5 million. So, it is not a clearly, except it is on the media in the media regularly, and in an alarming , its not and what i mean by that, its not , thease, data based media, its whats possible as opposed to what is probable. I like dealing with what is rob. When you have large areas or regions, like my reach district, for instance, 500 square miles without one case, the idea of a school having to close now doesnt make sense based upon realistic data. Look, decisions have to be made and in our country decisions are not made in that building all the time. They are made of the state and local level, so i respect it. What decision is going to be made in that link when it comes to economic stimulus response from the president . What do you think is possible . The president is applying every resource he has in a mobilized medical effort to mitigateontain, and this issue, right . This virus. So, the president came in and initially prohibited flights in from china. That was the first great step. Cases, noave had more question it would have ramped up faster. We have suspensions on flights in most of italy and in south korea and other places. And we have significant screening taking place in many other countries where the number of cases has been higher than the average. That is one thing that has been done. Ant the other day we passed 8. 3 million supplemental bill to provide the Funding Resources towards helping pharmaceutical. Ompanies find an anecdote right . That is certainly being worked on. No question, but thats 10 months out. We hear that it could be happening that much sooner. Not from the experts and doctors we talk to. Do you think congress can suspend the payroll tax today . Guest i think we can look at a number of things. Im never against lowering attacks or eliminating attacks. We have a boom that i think is more macro, so lowering the taxes on people in the workforce today is certainly something worth considering. We will see. Whats important are the many other things the president is offering. The businesses out there, everywhere you go a case has been developed. If the business is concerned about its employees and are therefore producing a product and providing a service and they think it is a good idea to shut down for 10 to 12 days, we dont want that business, we want to provide them some kind of safety net. No bailouts. Hopefully we are done with l outs for a long time in this country, but making it known Business Loans and other types of loans are made available, some sort of relief people as assuring those , employers and employees, that their medical benefits will be testing needs if to take place, the tests are available. A very reasonable approach that i would tell you, it starts at the white house but it is being implemented and executed on the local level. That is what america is about. We dont operate like china where everything is command central. That is why they have the problem they have. We are very independent society. They are very dependent. Our citizens dont turn to washington for their answers, they turned to themselves, their communities, but they need some leadership and ours needs to be based on realistic data to and improve the situation. Guest, his is our republican congressman joining us until the bottom of the hour this morning. A former Small Business that hit of the war getting into public Business Executive before getting into Public Service. A special line for Small Business owners with them being the focus of some of the relief we are talking about, 202 7488002 202 7488003 is the number for Small Business owners. Roger, republican, good morning. Caller can you hear me . Guest yes, we can. I used to be a republican. , hee the homophone come in has destroy the Republican Party. I dont know what we have now. When donald trump put the ban in, that was fine. It was a few weeks, thats ok. But who are the 15 people he allowed into the country to get all this started . Yeah, i dont, im not sure what you are referring to. We have millions and millions of people that enter the country every day. Millions go to disney world from different countries. 15s very, you cant pinpoint people or not. But President Trump is someone focused on improving america from a qualityoflife and economic world stage and has a sense of urgency and is willing to achieveresources that. All worthwhile, all of biting by the constitution. That is not going to be thrown out the window under this emergency. But he is also as a businessperson someone who is responsive to issues of the day. That is what we are seeing here. Every aspect of our federal government is being brought to this emergency. It is not being taken lightly. Certainly from the top you want a calming affect while behind the scenes to work aggressively to completely understand the problem and fix it as well as possible and protect people along the way, minimizing the overall effect to the health of ourle and the health of economy. Some people say the president is trying to have it both ways, where in china they just shut everything down. We dont operate that way, right . You operate in a reasonable way because we dont make decisions from command central. We allow the people to make the judgment calls that are best for them. You serve on the Veterans Affairs committee. Is the v. A. Ready for coronavirus . Are using their resources to follow a similar plan, detecting cases, responding to the cases, quarantining and containing those who perhaps have it. Therapeuticing relief, since there is no vaccine. Very diligent, doing everything they can to keep this thing, to keep people informed, as well as keep those who are not affected away from those that are. That is one thing about the cdc. They are 12,000 individuals. Every one of them is dedicated to protecting and keeping them the American People safe and they are in full operation here. The cdc website by the way, its the same information as the and briefings i received. Whether or not they are the hind doors or with the Vice President of the United States, we are not receiving any information other than what i could talk about here. Nothing at all classified, everything out in the open and we are all in this together. Tennessee, independent line, you are next, good morning. Are you with us . Yes, this coronavirus , letting the know president take care of things, he has done a good job, he has all the experts taking care of everything. I have seen it in the receipt last night. There was a guy out there outraged about President Trump. Thats a guy, the president of the United States. Host what do you mean when you say they are not letting him take care of things . Give me an example. Caller they say he is not doing anything, not taking control. Host who is they . The best scientists are working on it. I think i understand what youre saying. Unfortunately, the Mainstream National media is painting things once again in the worst possible light. They dont want to give President Trump any credit for anything. Hyperbolizeding at every opportunity. It is disheartening to see that. The New York Times call it the trunk virus. If you are sick trump virus. If you are sick, blame trump. They dont act in a professional manner. That is wrong, to send out misrepresentation on an important issue. Once again, we have to remove the politics, the with an issue, correct it as americans and all work together. Maybe this can be a uniting issue in the end. All i know is that every resource of the federal government, and i say this, i have got an inside look at it, is being put to use to inform, protect, mitigate, contain, and then ameliorate, improve over the shortest amount of time possible. Greg, auburn, alabama, democrat, good morning. Are you doing . First i would like to say that yearsdiabetic, 60 six old, cancer survivor. I am a target of this disease and people with my condition are targets of this disease. Now, common sense would tell the average person, and i go to a lot of Emergency Rooms in my condition. I always wait two hours, three hours before i can see a doctor. Common sense tells me that this is fluid throughout the country and with this virus, those on when you can see a doctor, when we have a pandemic and whatever else comes after that. Really, really scary. As far as the cdc, 12,000 people overlooking 300 million . Thats a little bit undercut, under the weather. I think it will take them a long time to look at the 300 million. Donald trump is downplaying it. I think hes doing the best he can with what he has to work with. Guest i dont disagree with anything you have said, you are at higher risk and those suffering the most severe. Ymptoms have fatalities 95 of the time, let me check my math, i wanted to be right, call it 85 of the time over the age of 70, most of that percentage is over the age of 80. You are in higher risk, you absolutely have to take more precautions. Avoid places that are highly public, with a lot of people. Wash your hands regularly. Im washing my hands 8, 9, 10 times per day, particularly if im shaking hands. The 12,000 people, that relates to what im saying. You have to count over the positions in the country. ,hey are being trained physicians, on how to respond and get to the test kits. Without that, without that local resource that exists, because frankly we are a free society, america, we are better prepared. As far as the president know, you canou look at things glass half full, glass halfempty. I think the president is trying same calling, but at the note be open. He was down at cdc last friday i think it was and he had a onehour press conference with all the scientists, cdc directors, dr. Fauci, everyone else around him. He answered the questions in the most honest manner possible. The same honest way we get our briefings behind closed door. Everything is being put out there. It is for us to use the information as well as possible and when we have Better Solutions we will be communicating that. Coming back to solutions on capitol hill, what could happen this week . You talked about mandatory paid sick leave, is that something that democrats and republicans can come together on . Guest maybe. Lets see were things go. Some people have occasion time. There should be access to it. Frankly, not on the back of taxpayers. I think there are some initiatives they can provide longterm for help, perhaps an extension. We are at full employment right now. Its the best in 50 years, the economy is doing extremely well. Doing wells is are and can probably sustain a bit of a downturn. So many are living paycheck to paycheck. That is why the president wants to do the payroll reduction so that they have more money in their pockets. Under these sort of emergency initiatives, we likely need to make people understand that there will be some outlets for belief. But we have got to, we have got to see what the options are. Robert, Small Business owner, michigan. What do you own . Caller a Grocery Store and a farm. Host what do you think is needed . Caller i will tell you what we need. Number one, when i go to the store, my store, i take a paper towel, bleach it at home, clean up the door handles and everything. And every time that i handle money, i put my hands in the bleach water and disinfect my hands. You dont know where the money has been. Host what would you like to see the federal government do, if anything . I think they are doing fairly decent but one thing that needs to be looked at, where are we getting our drugs . Thats a good question. I have to tell you, i have many farmers, agriculture industry in my state, and if you ever need some effective horse sense, common sense, ask a farmer. Thank you, sir. Appreciate that. You are doing the things that you need to do to make you comfortable near during this time, to avoid contacting this contagious virus. Heap in mind on this, though, Something Like 80 of the people who actually test positive or have the virus have no symptoms. Particularly those that are young. Thats number one. 10 , lets take 100 . Do feel the symptoms. 5 of that had to be hospitalized. And then you have got less than 1 dealing with fatalities. Much less, particularly in the United States. But the numbers that you will take into media account all the deaths that occurred in china in a small area. Again, data matters, statistics matter. This is likely going to get worse before it gets better. Or i should say that more people will be tested positive for it. But now we are engaged, right . Everyone knows more or less how to handle things. Im not talking about shutting down schools and businesses. To me that is extreme. Particularly if there are no cases at all within the region for the area. At Johns Hopkins university, they have been keeping up with this on their dashboard. 1039 confirmed cases in the United States. 29 deaths so far. So, just under the 3 number. Guest yes, just under the 3 number. Place, testing takes more people will be confirmed to have it. You have got the numerator and the denominator there, right . In this case the numerator is higher. The testing, the cdc has done testing they believe in. They get back. 6 because washington have that flareup, particularly in the Nursing Homes. Nursing homes should be very cautious. When this vaccine gets into a nursing home, it can be extremely problematic. And a number of problems did get exposed. Your question about how much of the derivatives of the pharmaceutical industry and drugs be made in china . Yeah, most people were not aware of that. Some positive things may come out of this, but we cant talk about that with people getting sick and possible fatalities. I should note that at 9 a. M. We will be joined by david gifford, senior Vice President at the American Health care association, the largest trade organization for Health Care Workers in america. Call for you this morning. Richard has been waiting from canada, montreal. He describes himself as a republican. Good morning, congressman. 2009, 2010, we had the swine flu , 13,000 americans died, including many children. I follow the news very closely. I hear the news covering this every day. Obama did not assemble a task force to give us everything every day. 13,000 is a huge number and the corrupt media and corrupt Democratic Party are trying to blame the president for spreading this virus when 13,000 americans were killed and they didnt inform the public. I was traveling in the United States and didnt know about this. They put my family at risk and they are blaming the president . Outrageous. The numbers on the swine flu, right, 12,500 just in the United States. 700 Million People worldwide infected and that was just 2009. Out ins being carried the worst manner possible. I dont want to call anybody corrupt, but the American People need to know the facts. It that is why what you are saying is important, people can but this into perspective. In 2009 frankly it was a lot worse. We have an unknown here. I can understand the concern of people, but we have got to put things in perspective. Add to the fact that thousands, tens of thousands of people every year die from the flu. Whether they get the flu shot or not, right . Somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 deaths per year in the United States from the flu. And more or less, and that covers a wider spectrum of age, but it affects those who are ill or elderly more so. So, again, this is still something that has a lot of unknowns to it, but im glad you are helping people to know the information so they can put it in perspective. Host do you think of the imagined Obama Administration should have done more than what political fact says on this issue, they declared swine flu a Public Health emergency six weeks before it was declared a pandemic and no deaths have yet to be recorded in the United States when that happened and by six months after, over 1000 deaths had occurred. Guest i dont know, i wasnt there and frankly was in the Business World and like this gentleman, barely remember it. I hate everybody is going to remember this who is alive today , because of the constant News Coverage on it. It thats ok. Again, the American People need to take these things into perspective and just know that this isnt the first time we have dealt with Something Like this, even in a reasonably short amount of time and we have the full resources of the United States, federal, state, local governments looking to combat it. Always appreciate when you stop by. Guest thanks a lot, john. Kim schrier, and later we will be joined by dr. David gifford to take a look at how Nursing Homes and assisted living facilities are dealing with coronavirus. Well you right back. Be right back. Broughtcharles fremont the Pacific Coast into the United States. At the beginning of the story, the United States it didnt have a Pacific Coast. There was disputed territory with britain and california belonged to mexico. Fremont encouraged the american settlement of oregon and took part in the american conquest of california just in time for the gold rush. He played a real role in the unitede map of states. Stephen king Steve Inskeep on his book, imperfect union. Sunday night at 8 00 eastern on q a. Cspan, your unfiltered view of government. Created by cable in 1979, brought to you today by your television provider. Washington journal continues. Host with Washington State being one of the focal points of the coronavirus outbreak, we appreciate the presence of Washington State congresswoman kim schrier, pediatrician for two decades before coming to office. People inking county and Washington State are understandably concerned. This is spreading. The numbers that you are seeing in news are escalating rapidly. Reflecting two things, one, spread of disease, and more availability of testing, testing people with milder symptoms. We are worried, being very careful with seniors. Today toto see changes restrict the gatherings of large crowds. Host explain the changes you are expecting. Rumor has it we will have no gatherings of more than 200 and 50 people by the governor. My understanding is that Nursing Homes in particular are having a lot of new restrictions discouraging any visits or anybody from leaving. I know that they have been really involved in making sure that every nursing home is following the absolutely best standards. And of course, everybody has to make their own decisions and i think that people are very attuned to this in Washington State, ready to hunker down, shelter in place for several weeks if needed. Since youle mentioned the governor, what role is the state playing . Is it a good coordination . All guest first of all, big shout out to the governor who is doing a great job with this. And to our Health Officials in Washington State, they have done limiting the outbreak, tracing contact. Frankly, if it had to happen anywhere, king county and Washington State Public Health is astounding. There is coordination. Vice president pence came out with our delegation just last usk and they are helping with the national stockpile, getting personal Protection Equipment for health care providers. Host phone numbers of the viewers want to join in host and a special line for medical professionals, 202 7488002 202 7488003. Joined by our own medical professional, pediatrician for over two decades before joining congress. Do you mind talking for a minute why children have been spared, thankfully, so far from this . Do we know, yet . Guest its very interesting. Theres still very little we knows about the disease. Children i cant imagine arent , but they ared not showing symptoms. Ethereal that the immune response is causing the pulmonary symptoms as a post of the virus itself. Host explain . There he,in, this is we will have to see if kids are carrying this and if they can spread it. Children and pregnant women have suppressed immune systems or not yet fully developed immune systems. Whereas older people will mount a more vigorous response. It is theght that cytokines causing the information that leads to the tragic pulmonary symptoms. That is why perhaps pregnant women and children seem to be spared the worst symptoms. Here on capitol hill, what advice are you giving your colleagues appear . Guest first, im telling , i spokefrom last week up and i said, hey, guys, wake up. I have seen a bunch of people in this room coughing into their hands and wiping their noses. It started in our county and it is spreading fast and killing people in our county, because it hit Nursing Homes, which are incredibly vulnerable. Its everywhere. We are making changes. We always oboe bump. We have puerile everywhere. Ll everywhere. Remember, pediatricians are like Infectious Disease doctors, we live in pete we live within Infectious Disease all the time. I have also decided to forgo communal breakfast, i open doors with my elbow. We all need to be really aware. Host lets chat with a few callers this morning. Is the line set aside for medical professionals. Otherwise lines as usual. Congresswoman schreier is with us until the top of the hour. Barbie is up first out of brooksville, florida. Democratic line, good morning. Caller good morning. I had hoped to speak with the previous guest. Everybody problem is wants to jump on the bandwagon of blame. I feel that since trump has office, he has been interested in burning down rather than building up. I think the cdc has been behind on jumping onto this. You could have shown a clip. Redfield there in his congressional hearing the other day, saying that they had been defunded. Have been pretty much decimated. That sort of thing just helps along this growing problem that we have. That is my comment. Guest thank you for your comment. I really prefer to take the high road right now in terms of secondguessing and creating a political issue out of this. First of all, scientists at the cdc, nih and hhs have been tremendous. Yes, there were missteps along the way, problems with coordinating different agencies. I think they put on the brakes where they shouldnt have. For example, in todays paper you saw dr. In Washington State who does flu surveillance that could take the samples and surveilled for covid19 and coronavirus as well. He was stopped from doing that. In retrospect, we will look back at this point, but moving forward we are getting more test kits, bringing in universities and the private sector, making that available. In my state we have places doing drivethrough testing. The more cases that we find, the more we will be able to control the illness. Right now democrats and republicans have to come together. This is a time when we are fighting a common enemy that does not discriminate based on what Political Party you are in. I was really pleased to have Vice President pence come to Washington State and i know he is working hard to get more masks sourced. Dr. the caller mentioned Robert Redfield. If you want to watch that hearing in its entirety where he testified, you can do that on our website, cspan. Org. Redfield into the search bar at the top of the page. You will have another chance to hear from him today. The hearing for the House Oversight and Reform Committee, beginning in about 45 minutes from now, airing on cspan3. You can also watch it on cspan. Org, the free cspan radio app, and joining him will be dr. Anthony fauci, one of the other faces so far of the federal response. A second ago you mentioned democrats and republicans coming together. What do you think they can do tos week when it comes blunting the economic downturn caused by coronavirus . Well, we came together quickly last week to pick together a package to be used for everything from developing vaccines to evaluating treatments, getting them out with local Public Health. But they also have economic measures as well, thinking about what we need to do to keep Small Businesses up and running. Our governor has gotten ahead of this. Unemployment, if , and ifant go to work business closes or is too slow to employ, that there is temporary unemployment. Available to everyone in Washington State and there is nothing disparaging scourging people from getting treatment or getting tested. I have a bill that we will be looking at today to do the same thing that really. Host one of the same things the white house is proposing is a payroll tax break from the white house yesterday at the press briefing. Larry kudlow spoke a bit about it. This is what he had to say. To you in justat a second. As we hear from thomas in north carolina. Go ahead. Bang quickot to questions. Do you think that this will get worse before it gets better . Seems like every day on the news there are more cases. My second question is, i dont thata problem with funding, but using that money, what it heard other parts of the government, using the 8 billion . I mean, would taxes go up . Im wondering where its coming from. Guest thank you for the question. Since dayave known one that this was going to come to our shores. There is only so much you can do to delay Something Like this from coming. It was going on in china before it was announced as an epidemic. People were traveling all over the world. It was a matter of when, not if. You can 100 expect that this will get worse before it gets better. That this will spread, it already has. We have Community Spread and we dontstill so much know. Our kids spreading it to their grandparents . We need to find this out. We also know that seniors and people with preexisting conditions are far more impacted. I would anticipate more struggles there. The answer to your other question, as far as where the 8. 3 billion is coming from, we need to make sure we are not pulling we made sure we are not point from other places. I want to drive home this point. The Economic Impact of this disease, if we dont get a hold of it and contain it, it will be far worse than whatever Financial Impact the rescue packages have. I want to also drive home the fact that we cannot go from crisis to crisis intervening only once a disease is at our doorstep. We need steady, regular investment in the cdc and Global Health to catch the diseases before they turn to a big deal. Kudlow, promise to larry here he is yesterday from the white house. [video clip] unveiled is the word you just used, but so far the public has not seen it. When is the general public going to see what yall have put together . We are working out details right now, i dont want to quote numbers ahead of time. You make a proposal, we are checking with the leaders of both parties in both houses to see whats doable. Where the tough nuts are going to be. I dont want to get into any detail. The outline is important. Is probablyholiday the most important, powerful piece of this. Tothe other hand, i want draw attention. We can use administration and executive authority again to help unpaid sickly people, which is very important. We can use it for the medium and smaller businesses, which is very important. Other distressed sectors, we have leverage on tap for tax deferral. Look, i will say it again, as i the for quite some time, economy is strong. We also know that there could be problems and challenges ahead. Dont deny it. Well see. I want to take it a day at a time and one fact at a time. But anyway, this will be the broad package and at some point in the near future we will outline the more detailed package for you. Congresswoman kim schrier, on the package that has already guest i comment on that would be first im glad were looking at the economics of this and taking it seriously. Its been a real detriment to the ability to address this to have mixed messages coming out of the administration. Downplaying this, i understand the region the reason is the president didnt want to see the stock market hit hard, but his viewers who are seniors need to understand that this is not just a seasonal flu. Its a bigger deal. Im thrilled to see them take it seriously. A payroll tax will help the Small Businesses and the people who are employed. But there are a lot of people with jobs who will be out on sick leave or who are part of the gig economy will not be helped by this. Their jobs when businesses close or slow down. I think we need to think more broadly. We need to think about paid sick leave, not just for seven days. If people have to be home for 14 and their children get it . I think we should be thinking in terms of a month. Emergency unemployment insurance, like we are doing in Washington State, so if someone for a couple of months, we can help them. I dont want people to get kicked out of the apartment, not be able to pay their mortgage or put food on the table. A couple of other things we have in thinking about, there are a lot of Safety Net Services out there. Food programs, snap, wicked, school lunches, we need to make sure that people are made whole during this time. A payroll tax could be part of the picture, but we need to think bigger. Rockaway, new jersey. Carol, good morning. Caller good morning. I would like to report a few with regard found to the current neural virus. Norovirus. An eventr there was that took place in new york city. Event 201 was hosted by Johns Hopkins Health Security in partnership with the bill and Melinda Gates foundation. It was an extremely fascinating. Andemic simulation it was an exercise of the current nora virus, which would take place about six weeks after this event took place. Is current nora virus patented by a company by the name appear bright, the pure right institute. Billd in large part by the and Melinda Gates foundation. Host you are saying the virus was patented . By the pure right institute. Host congresswoman . Guest im not sure exactly where your question is going, so i will make a couple of comments. First, yes, its really important to have pandemic simulations. About pandemic, these are typical things to involve in a simulation. This is why by the way we need steady funding for the cdc, Public Health, Global Health. That is the funding that pays to prepare communities, hospitals, and doctors for these kinds of emergencies. Im not sure where you are going with the next part. Im going to take a guess, because i think this is an important issue to address. There is misinformation out there that this virus was perhaps manufactured in some way. That it was altered in a laboratory that made it or infectious. I even heard it brought up in congress by a member of congress. This was flatout denied. Its a natural mutation in a virus that came from animals to humans and has the ability to go easily from human to human and there is no evidence that it came from a laboratory anywhere in our country or china, let it go, no conspiracy theories, look at the science and the facts. Host mary, good morning. Caller high. I hope that this isnt too farfetched. Hi. I hope that this isnt too farfetched. After coronavirus hit, i remember that President Trump had a strange trip to walter be part oft he could a partial physical, they said. He did meet with several chinese in early november. Could it be that he went to get tested for the corona and that they just covered it, the media saying that they didnt know why he had gone there . Congresswoman . Guest this is another one of those, sorry to be like this, its kind of a farfetched. And not a place to put our attention. Its highly unlikely that he would go to walter reed and come out looking good and healthy if it had anything to do with coronavirus. Its far more likely that someone in his late 70s would anothere doctor for reason, heart, lungs, Something Else that older people just get. Lets push that aside. Everyone has their own conspiracy. A at this point we have got to take on whats happening now to protect our communities. Host kathy, delaware, good morning. Guest high, kathy. Caller hi. I want to let you know how we are handling this socalled crisis. My nieces in paris enjoying spring break. The rest of the family is on their way to cancun. Confident with the Trump Administration and the way it has handled the whole situation. ,f you would do me a favor could you possibly Say Something to Chuck Schumer about his rhetoric . It is so inflammatory and caustic. Its not good for the democrats. Not that i want to give you any positive advantage over the next election, but its going to come back to bite the democrats. Instance. Gland, for they have had 800 and 50 some cases of coronavirus and six deaths. Crisis. Not a its a crisis, you are right, if we dont come together and are all on the same state that same page, act civilized and stop beating up donald trump. Hes doing a very good job and we are very confident that he will, by the end of march think you will see this thing start to wind down. Guest ok, kathy, you brought up a whole bunch of issues. First of all, i agree that this should not be a political issue, we have to join forces to take it on. I am concerned that you may be minimizing the impact of this. I dont think that there is any chance that this will be much winding down by the and of the month. March 31 is only a few weeks away and i would anticipate this getting worse before it gets better. You can take your own perspective on that, but science is science and each person getting this is spreading it potentially to two to three other people and if we dont take aggressive action now, the numbers will escalate very quickly into the hundreds of thousands. Now, the other issue you brought up his travel. This is really important. Look, i travel every week back and forth from my home in king county, washington, epicenter of all of this, to washington, d. C. I have some anxiety about being on a plane, im very careful about cleaning everything. I have less anxiety because if i did get infected, i could isolate myself in my home or in my apartment in d. C. When people travel, you need to take her seriously. First of all, if you are in a high risk group, i just dont think you should be doing voluntary travel right now. Second, if you go to france where there is an outbreak and your niece gets the coronavirus there, your niece will be stuck there somewhere. I dont know where travelers can shelter in place. I dont know if she will have 14 days to just hunker down in a hotel or if a hotel would want disease. With this i certainly dont want her getting a cough and a fever, dismissing it as a nothing and getting on a plane with hundreds of passengers comingplease takeu want to take, but understand what those consequences may be. You might be stuck in france or in cancun for a couple of weeks sick. I think you need to think about those Health Care Systems. Please, do not underestimate the potential disaster we are already seeing from this illness. , democrat fromer washingtons eighth district, cochair of the new democratic coalition. Guest thank you for having me. Host the question of how Nursing Homes and other assistedliving facilities are dealing with coronavirus. We will get answers from dr. David gifford joins us he is a senior Vice President at the American Health care association. Andmany Nursing Homes assisted living facilities do you represent . What are they telling you they need to do with coronavirus . Guest i represent about two thirds of all Nursing Homes in the country. About 1 5 of assistedliving. They areerned concerned. Thiswe are seeing is that virus really acts differently in the elderly. It can be quite dire. There is a mixed message out there. Both are true. This is like the flu, so dont worry for the general population, but for the elderly it is a different story. That is the message, i think people are getting that. Host we just had a congress kingt from washington, the county washington nursing home the epicenter of the early outbreak in the focus of so many deaths so far. What happened there, and what is being done to keep what happened there from happening in other Nursing Homes . Wast what happened there the virus was in the community and it got introduced into the home. Our concern is how to prevent that. We have made recommendations the government has made recommendations not to visit Nursing Homes. Not just for family members, but everyone. Seriously look at whether you need to be there. We have been talking to vendors, whether they need to be there, and they have been staying out. Host a headline from todays New York Times. One of the executives from your group quoted in the story, new guidelines devastates Nursing Homes, no more visitors. Explain how those guidelines are enforced, it can the government mandate no visitors . Guest right now the guidelines are some governors in some areas where the virus is spreading, they are making bans, but bans. Ally, no na ask yourself, should i be going in there . What very are seeing is a lot of people dying. To assess theing risks like the representative talked about and you are worried about your family member, i would not go in host host lets go to the phone lines. Dr. David gifford with us until the bottom of the hour. Oryoure in the Eastern Central time zones, 202 7488000. Mountain or pacific time zones, 202 7488001. Withcial line for those experience in assisted living, whether it is yourself or a family member, we want to hear about your experiences, what you are seeing now. Is that number. I want to come back to the New York Times story. A quote stood out from that story, this from one of those interviewed, her name is melissa west whose 95yearold motherinlaw lives in the , sheng home in seattle said i am concerned the loneliness and helplessness will kill her quickly quicker than the virus. I think about her by herself all day being trapped and waiting. Having that reaction to visitors no visitors. Guest that is a concern. One thing we are recommending is making sure that family members have contact information. We are asking everyone to figure out alternative ways to communicate. There is a lot of videoconferencing that can be done. We recommend family members explore that option. Host is that something there is funding for . We saw an emergency funding bill passed, does any of that go to care facilities . Guest i am not aware of that but there are things available right now. Phones, tablets, and certainly we are exploring those options now. We have a lot of family members who are distant anyway, and i think i will help with some of that loneliness. Host does that 8. 3 billion go to anything that impacts your industry . Guest i have not gotten through the details but i know there is money in there for small Business Loans and supplies. We are waiting to see. Host how bad our supply issues . Guest we are concerned about supplies because a lot are manufactured in china. We are watching this closely. We have issues and concerns about that. Right now, they are getting some supplies out. Host george is up first out of philly. Good morning. George, are you with us . Caller hello . Host go ahead. Caller i want to know what youre going to do about people in the military coming home. Ont our focus right now is assistedliving facilities. Is a good. 1k that thing to remember is that there is a lot of unique situations. The military, people traveling for business, vacation, this virus does not discriminate on the purpose of their travel. People coming back from other countries should monitor their health and limit their interactions with others. Particularly, i would not visit assistedliving living or Nursing Homes. Host jackie out of trenton, missouri. Caller thank you for taking my call. My mother is in a facility in illinois. They have started a procedure ,here they stop you at the door 18 and younger is not allowed in leaveilding, they have to. People needing is, to be more diligent about what they are doing at home to keep it from being transferred. Wash your hands. Disinfect your home. Go to the Grocery Stores late at night when it is not crowded. If you do your part, you can save a lot of lives in this country. Guest i could not have said it better, jackie. Great advice. Host cambridge, massachusetts, this is mary. Caller hello. I am a senior who is at home. Although i do not like to say it. I rent rooms. Going about my usual business and i am not sure i go to the store, i try to stay away from crowds. I went to church, it is not a big congregation. Distance arms length between myself and other people. They do have crackers and things. Forgotongs, but then i using the tongs everybody else is using the tongs. I forgot about that part of it. What are People Like Us supposed to do . Getting close to 90, but still going out and doing what we have always done. Guest many people are like you. You should be proud that you are 85. And 88 and in 87 the same situation you are. I will tell you the same thing i told them. I think they should stay home as much as possible. Avoid large crowds, like you are doing. They like to go to the symphony, i said you should stop that during this time period. Just seal themselves in their house, they have to go. Ut and get food you need to do that, but to take the precautions you did. I wouldnt shake other peoples hands, try to use the hand gels in between actions. Host john out of baker, louisiana. Caller good morning. I was wondering, they said that can have theple disease and show no symptoms. In my age, i will be 72 is there anything about cleaning everything, but is there any kind of vitamin b12 or anything for older people to build up the immune system . They catch it, they have a better chance to survive it . Guest the steps to take are to not get exposed. That is the most helpful thing. Certainly limiting interaction with individuals, washing her hands are probably the most productive way to do that. Eating healthy and resting, make sure you are drinking enough. In our family, we usually get together my parents have sent out an email saying we are not going to have family gatherings. Every time we have gotten together at thanksgiving, other holidays, they end up getting sick afterwards because we bring our kids and grandkids. They love to see them, but we are trying to figure out how to explore using video chat. As our guest, ord senior Vice President of the American Health care association, former director of the Rhode Island Department of health and a masters in Public Health. Thosee a special line for with experience in Nursing Homes and assisted living, guest 202 7488002 is that number. I want to ask you about this Kaiser Health news report. Long before coronavirus made its appearance, and Nursing Homes were struggling to prevent basic protocols designed to help stop the spread of viruses. Inspectors health cited more Nursing Homes for failure to ensure all workers follow those rules than any other violation. That, according to a Kaiser Health analysis. Homes where 60 or more were cited for more than one inefficiency. Guest the number one citation has been Infection Control. Prevention Infection Control program together to train everyone in Nursing Homes. We have supported regulations that require all Nursing Homes who have protections on board with that. The infections going on, there are things people can do. I would recommend whether you are in a hospital, nursing home or assisted living, when a healthcare workers coming into your room, you should see them washing their hands. If not, ask them to wash their hands. That is ok. If they get indignant, that is something wrong with them, not you. You should not be embarrassed to ask people to wash their hands. That is probably the most important thing people should be doing. Unfortunately, we know in else, als and everywhere most citations are for not washing hands. Host is it not mandated now that an Infection Control specialist be on staff . Guest those regulations went into effect last fall. Host out of indiana, good morning. Caller thank you for taking my call. I was going to mention the i wasility concerned about older sterilization, which sounds odd, but there is a lot of good bacteria too. It seems like we might be killing that too. Antiseptics they use for strep you can only use it for three or four days and then you have to stop for a day or two because it throw so many toxins in your body you can actually get sick from that. Host over sterilization. Guest a lot of people ask how we should clean everything. The guidelines, what we know, normal cleaning and wiping things down makes sense. We also know that the majority of the time it is transmitted, people cough or sneeze and it is in the air. Or people touching their nose and they shake your hands. Handsbumping, not shaking is a key aspect. And then, wiping down high touch surfaces. You do not need special cleaning agents for this. As more people are being tested and confirmed around the country, we have seen a doubling of the numbers since 48 hours ago. What are the rules when it comes to transferring a person from a hospital who may be there with coronavirus to a longterm facility . Is that allowed, and how do facilities deal with that . Is going toesting show increase over time. The virus is out there and we have not had tests available. Lolled lulled into test results is a mistake. In washington, where they are having lots of people in the hospital, youre going to have to change that guidance. Concerned about having not introduced it. I am sure scientists are trying to look at this question about host should they allow those transfers, or should they accept those folks . Guest if youre going to accept someone in normally, you should accept them. If they dont have it. If they have it is where the controversy is. Everywhere in the country should be ok. Just because somebody has covid, does not mean they have to go to the hospital. Stayathomele can. Toy should call and check see but they need. We are following that same guidance within Nursing Homes, if they dont need to go to the hospital, we are not sending them because that could create backlogs. If they are coming to the hospital, we are asking with the issue is. If they are covert positive, there is a lot of how to do that. You dont want to see it spread in the facility. Host fred out of new york city. You are on with dr. David gifford. Caller thanks for taking my call. Ajust had my mother in nursing home. I was there quite often, because thats the way they are. Visit, you dont know if theyre going to be taken care of. A lot of good people working in the nursing home, but the nursing home is absolutely understaffed. I spoke to one nurse and she told me she had a patient ratio of 40 1. That is outrageous. Some of them catwalks, medical issues, and these people have to some of them cant walk. I see these people running, sweating trying to do everything. How can you be working in a nursing home and not have ethical benefits . What is going on in our country that we neglect our citizens so bad . You worry about coronavirus, doctors kill people every year by accident. There is something wrong at the top of our country. Too many people in positions who do not have what i would call boots on the ground experience. A lot of education and accomplishments in the academic world, but somehow just not able to get this done. Guest you bring up a couple of good points. In nursingworkforce homes is unbelievably committed to the elderly. They put their own families and their own health at risk. We have seen in seattle, those have been asked to stay at home wanting to come back in because they are worried about their residents. Youre also pointing out there are broad system issues we need to grapple with. Right now, during this crisis, we are not going to be able to do that. Ilearned early on that when am taking care of someone with a heart attack, i cant talk to them about stopping smoking and exercising better. I am going to talk about it later, but i have to manage the heart attack. Right now, we are having a heart attack, but we need to have that discussion. You raised many good points and there are a lot of other points we need to look at. Raise,ne point he did that is how it is at Nursing Homes, if you dont visit, they dont get taken care of as well. Aret a lot of people lonely, it is an important aspect. But, right now the risk of introducing as i said, this is not the flu. The risk of introducing this virus is very serious. We dont want to have that risk because if you really care about your family member, going in there is a way to introduce it. Out of abundance of caution, they shouldnt go there. Marylandn in potomac, with a text, should testing for covid in Nursing Homes be a high priority . I would add, should it be mandated . Advocatingave been that both the residents and Health Care Workers are on a priority list until more widespread testing is available. Otherwise we do not know who is introducing it and we further create this workforce shortage. You dont need to test everyone because if you are not having symptoms, if you have not been exposed, doing testing is going to take testing away from other individuals and is not going to be beneficial. Host about 10 minutes left with dr. David gifford, chief medical officer at the American Health care association. Anna is in bloomfield, new york. Caller good morning. In with the most recent caller about staffing, i am an rn and worked for two years in two different settings. I can tell you the staffing issue is decadesold. It didnt happen just now. As an example, one unit i worked , on the night shift twoe was one nurse and assistants for a 48 bed unit. Of which, a handful were self ambulatory. T longterm facilities quite a few, i will not say most. Twoxperience residents to a room. Policies and training can happen from now until the cows come but if staff do not have the time to implement policies and procedures such as washing your hands between care chroniciduals, this infection rate of multiple diseases will continue in longterm care settings. A cry that has been made for decades. Guest i couldnt agree with you more. First off, thank you for working in longterm care. We need more people like you coming in. We hear from our members in Nursing Homes around the country that they cannot find individuals like you. We would love to hire more nurses, we would love to hire. Ore aides that is a discussion we are going to have to have, particularly as more people baby boomers reach 80 and over. We need more workforce to come in and help. That is something we will have to have a discussion once this coronavirus quiets down. Host when you do have that discussion, what is the pay difference between being a nurse and a longterm care facility or nursing home versus a hospital . Is there a disparity . Guest it varies all around the country. Generally, hospitals do pay higher. There are also other policy issues and payment issues that make the difference. I dont think it is time to get into all of that now. That isthat is not going to pree virus from getting in. The messages the governors are sending, the government is sending, is please do not bring the virus in. Ask yourself, do i need to risk the possibility of introducing the virus . Member, that is a family contractor, employee, whoever. Look at an alternative way to communicate. Host back to the line with for those with experience. Glenn here in washington, d. C. Heard contains the virus. I was wondering because my grandma and grandpa are 95, when you flush the toilet, aerosol is created in the air that can go roughly 12 feet. Can it transmit the virus . Have there been studies on that yet . Have been some investigative learning that the viruses principally in your nose and mouth, but it can also be in your stool. Why you need to be taking the right precautions when carrying for somebody. Caring for somebody. The main way this transmits is through droplets. It is not like other viruses like measles where it is in the air, and if you walk through might get exposed. Certainre doing procedures where you are aerosol aerosolizing things, that is when we recommend Health Officials to wear masks. If you are at home, there is not a big risk for that, certainly through stool. Host if you minutes left with dr. David gifford. This is rich out of marion, ohio. Caller great questions. I am curious about different ways we could close the barn door. It seems like dr. s waiting rooms always have a lot of people in there. If we could cut the waiting time. If people get tested, if they could do it from their car, which some countries are doing, could cut that waiting where people have to interact in the waiting rooms. It could make a big difference of the whole hospital not being infected. The other thing, we should keep a chart for different categories. It moves so fast like a football player. Also, someone has the authority to pull those things in fast. You see a good solution come up. The other one is in the restaurants, there is a possibility they could minimize economic damage of people not go to restaurants but having carry out sin things like that. The restaurants could may even do better. Guest erased two good points. You raised two good points. At this time, call ahead so they know you are coming in so they can take precautions, but not Everyone Needs to run to the doctor. The guidance of your physicians and Health Professionals. Other question about testing, you should be guided by your doctor. For certain people who have mild symptoms, whether you test positive or not is not going to change whether they do any treatment. That is a key aspect. The messaging, you dont want to overwhelm the system for people who are really sick. That is something we have been talking about. We dont want people coming in and introducing an overwhelming coming in and overwhelming that. People coming and have to wear gowns and gloves and that contributes to the shortish. Shortage. Host we have been hearing updates from the Task Force Led by the Vice President pence are they giving their advice to you . Guest the Vice President called us in a week ago and gave us advice that they were going to immediately do better social distancing. We have been talking regularly with people from hhs and the centers for disease control. That the challenge previous caller identified was this is changing rapidly as we learn things. Has come out with new regulations every two or three days. I applaud them for that, i have never seen them move that fast. They are really trying to stay ahead. The challenge is how we get that word out. If you look behind all the details, the main message is, lets prevent the disease from coming in, and how do we keep people out . That is what you hear from everyone, governors, government officials saying do not visit these facilities. Host one more call. Doug, orth carolina, thanks for holding. Caller [indiscernible] i think we need to trust our doctors. Maybe take it off tv for 30 days because people it is scaring the nation. I think this care is worse than the virus. A wholelot people lot more people die in abortion clinics. I think we need to stop trust your doctors. I went to the doctor last week. I trust doctors. We trust our doctors. We need to let them take care of it. Take yourself off the tv host dr. David gifford. I think a couple of points doug made our good. There is still influenza, that is serious. These recommendations would apply to that as well. I do want to make out the point that for younger individuals, this is not as serious as in the elderly. What we are seeing is that most of the deaths are in the elderly, most of the deaths are in people over 80 who have other diseases. That is who lives in assisted living. That is why we are taking this dramatic step to prevent people from coming in. That may not apply in other settings because we want to prevent that coming into these groups. This is a lot more serious than the flu or the common cold, from what we are seeing. David chief medical officer the American Health care association. Guest thank you for having me. Host for the final 25 minutes of our program, more phone calls. We are asking the question, is coronavirus impacting your community . Let us know what is going on in your part of the country. Eastern or central, 202 7488000. Mountain or pacific, 202 7488001. You can start calling in now. We will be right back. Announcer John Charles Fremont brought the Pacific Coast into the United States. At the beginning of the story, the United States did not have a Pacific Coast. There was territory in oregon that was disputed, and california which belonged to mexico. Oregon theaged settlement of oregon and took part in the conquest of california justintime for the gold rush. Role inlay a real changing the map of the United States. Announcer steve keep on his book. Sunday night at 8 00 eastern on cspans q and a. Announcer washington journal continues. Eastern or central time zones, 202 7488000. Mountain or pacific time zones, it is 202 7488001. One of the topics we have been whatabout all week is happening on College Campuses and in School Systems . That is the topic. That is the topic taken up by the wall street journal. Colleges send students packing. Campuses hope to be the spread relent Harvard University tuesday told students to move out no later than sunday and not return until further notice. Classes will be taught remotely. The school which has no confirmed cases has a regularly scheduled spring break next week. Vanderbilt, university of california berkeley have planned to shift to remote instruction. Tuesday, syracuse, middle berry, rutgers, indiana, and Grinnell College also joined the pack. Many do not have covid19 on campus. We want to hear what is happening around your part of the country. Sue is in glen oaks maryland. Thats glenoaks, maryland. Ler i suffer from serious i have been on lockdown for a time. Beenalth situation has neglected. It has not been fully diagnosed. It has been going on for many years. I relate to the people being quarantined. It is very isolating and difficult in terms of trusting the Health Care System, i think there is a lot of room for improvement. In terms of how it is affecting large swaths of the population, there are people in Nursing Homes at great risk. One of the questions i have is, is there a set up for people like me who have . We hear about this 5 which is quite high, but if you separate out the people who are already ill, it must be much higher a death rate. There are a lot of things that need to be addressed. One of the things is that this type of situation where people are isolated and unable to get good health care, unfortunately, is not just a result of this pandemic. This is happening to a lot of handicapped people. A lot of people who are left behind. The Health Care System does not take responsibility for those of us who are left out. Host thanks for the call. Here is one of the text we received. Renee from marietta, georgia. I received i was told by my doctor not to come into the office and said we dont need a test, just self quarantine. Shouldnt be know if we have it . Clark says, sanitation is a normal practice. One thing is for sure, worrying and panicking will not prevent people from getting sick. Grocery stores in this area have optionshave had pickup for months. You can stay in your car and have them put it in the trunk. No direct contact necessary. We are asking how coronavirus is affecting your community. This is beverly and washington, d. C. Good morning. Go ahead, beverly. One more time for beverly. We will go to dorothy in trenton, new jersey. Go ahead. Dorothy, do we have you . Caller yes. Lower immune system disease should i continue to go to the y . Host i didnt get the first part of your question. I do not want to give you medical advice because i am not your doctor. Are you still with us . Caller i am a senior with a lower immune system. Should i go to the y. Host have you been given advice . Are they closing down large gatherings in trenton, new jersey . What is happening there . I have not been given any advice i just know i have a low immune system disease. Host dorothy in trenton, new jersey. Dorothy, i know in some states they have asked those who are immunocompromised or over a certain age to avoid contact as much as possible. That is something we have been talking about this week, but some of those things happening across the country. We are opening up our phones to ask you what are have what is happening in your area . What are your churches and schools doing . That is what we want to hear from in these last 20 minutes. This is bryce in idaho. Caller i just have a question regarding in the pacific northwest, there seems to be these little massage parlors that are primarily run by the chinese. I went in and had my feet massaged one morning and i noticed there were several Chinese Women there who didnt speak english. The next time i went in there, same thing. It was like they had brought in a whole bunch more. Host what is your concern . Caller my concern is there might be illegals that have been brought into the country. Isnt that where this supposedly started, in china . Host bryce in idaho. This is kate out of talmage, ohio. Caller good morning, i am from stow, ohio actually. If youen getting home, that is good advice except a lot of employers do not pay sick pay. Hown Employee Stay some, are they going to pay their mortgage . I think that is part of this whole issue that no one is addressing. Host congress has talked about mandating paid sick leave as part of an Economic Relief package. That sound like something you would support . Host absolutely. I have a Home Health Aide that comes in. I was talking to her shes not sick, but what happens to you if you get sick . She says i dont get paid. She is the mother of two children. How is she going to buy groceries . Its a great idea, i agree they should stay home but if they are going to end up starving to death because they cant buy groceries, that is a problem. Host thanks for the view from ohio. We have been showing you from pages throughout the morning about coronavirus and its impact. Times, the financial italy widens emergency economy measures as the quarantine takes its toll in the battle to contain the virus. Yesterday in the United States, Vice President pence was speaking from the white house and responded to a question about the possibility of additional travel restrictions being implemented when it comes to countries like italy and korea and japan. , as dr. Is no question fauci said, we would be in a different place if President Trump had not suspended all travel from china. Also, i suspect, be in had notent place if we issued travel advisories for portions of italy, south korea, and initiated screening of all passengers on all direct flights into the United States from both countries. Thorough discussion today of the prospect of recommending to the president additional travel advisories. What we are doing particularly is following the facts. We are going to bring those recommendations forward in a we, the whitethat House Coronavirus Task force, deem appropriate. It is literally a day to day consideration. We are going to put the health and safety of americans first. From the Vice President the white house yesterday. Back to your phone calls, asking if coronavirus is affecting your community. Lawrenceville, georgia. Caller the lady that was just on i dont know how in the world you think you can pay everybody that doesnt get benefits. Nuts. S absolutely the virus is the same is the flu. Ginia beach, caller i am calling from virginia beach. Noterday, my friends could get a ride to the hospital. Uber is not giving people rides from the hospital. Dom a nurse and used to longterm care. But the other caller was saying, the ratio of caregivers to residents is deplorable. Hygiene. No to 50 people,es they double brief people so they dont have to change them. . Emember mrsa the used to screen people they dont screen people for that anymore. Now they just say everyone has. Ercer mrsa host did you have a chance to listen into our last segment with dr. Gifford . Caller yes. Host what would you have asked him . Health care is so important. The children, day care workers are paid minimal wage and nurses aides are the ones who do all the work and they get payment will wage. It is the same with Home Health Aides. The older people that live at mye and have aides coming primary care physician told me i should be a whistleblower because i have seen so much fraud in the homecare segment as well as in these longterm care facilities. Nothing will be done because it is all insurance. That is whether it is medicaid, medicare, or hospital driven. I am talking about these big hospital owned home care agencies. Host thanks for your call from virginia beach. We mentioned that hearing taking place in the oversight and Reform Committee. Dr. Anthony fauci is one of those faces of the response. He is testifying now. We will let viewers listen a little bit as he talks about the idea of a vaccine. Giving vaccines to normal people and determining if you protect them. There are candidates that are now already in clinical trial. Some ofthem in china, them right here in the United States. Theicularly in some of trials being done in Clinical Centers including the university of nebraska. We will know if they work in the next several months. I am hoping that we do get a positive signal. May and i underline may have therapy we can use. That needs to be proven first. In summary, the work being done at nih is involved both in the development of a vaccine in the longterm, and the development of therapies in the shorter term. I would be happy to answer questions. Dr. Anthony fauci testifying right now before the House Oversight and Reform Committee. The head of the National Institute of allergy and Infectious Diseases. We are airing that on cspan3 right now. Back to your phone calls before the house comes in. Joe, dayton, ohio. Caller i am calling from the great state of dayton, ohio. Our local university is the university of dayton. Had 1000 students protesting because the university of dayton told them to leave. Theyre going to leave for about a week or two because of the virus. These students protested because they do not want to leave. For the first time in my 59 years, i have ever heard of School Students saying they dont want to leave school. All live in college housing, i personally i am one of the only owners that have a house there. House, i have in my there are not going to leave. I thought that would be interesting to you. You have had some great callers. That has been an eye awakening experience. Also, i do not think the media is i think the media is going overboard. The fingerpointing needs to stop. I dont care what side of the aisle youre on, but we need to stop the fingerpointing. Go, can you you talk about those students in, i assume a rental property you have . Has there been any communication from the college to homeowners about what should be happening here . Have they tried to give you instruction . Note no, they have communicated to students but never communicated to us. Contactedsity never us, but they did contact the students. Students. Units, 14 host anything you are doing different if they are under some sort of self quarantine . Is there anything you would do different as the landlord . Caller no. Daytons nothing here in is three in cleveland, ohio that tested positive, but know nothing here at all. No, nothing here. I think this is being blown out of proportion. You have to be cautious, whatever, but this is every day what people should do. More people die of the flu than what is going on here. Not not saying this is serious, but what i am saying i think it is getting overblown. Host thank you for the view from dayton. This is ellen in sturgeon lake, minnesota. Caller good morning. Host go ahead. Caller i was just told and curious to find this out this corona could that be a manmade virus to control the population of older people . This Conspiracy Theory that is out there, why is that something youre willing to entertain . Caller when you hear about china and japan and everybody managing expectations, trump trying to make enemies with everybody, we cant bomb them so we can make a virus to kill them all. Host ellen in sturgeon lake, minnesota. A few minutes before the house comes in. I did want to note, we talked about members of congress who self quarantining. Bier,r one yesterday, don a democrat from virginia. He said he will self quarantine after he and his wife interacted with a friend who later tested positive for coronavirus. He says Virginia Department of health told him his friends infection began shortly after their contact with him and his chance of having the virus is low, but his office will be closed for almost a week.
