Thats nice of you. Seriously, youve done a great job leading North Carolinas Democratic Party in the big crowd here tonight. I think is proof it is clear North Carolina democrats know how to put the word party and party dinner. Speaking of the Democratic Party, i have to acknowledge dnc chair tom perez. Ive got to know them over the last year, he is not just enthusiastic, he knows what he is talking about and if you listen to him, we could all pull together and weve got to change who is living at 6000 Pennsylvania Ave and he can help. Governor cooper and the leader jackson and the rest of the North Carolina delegation, thank you for having me here tonight. This is the fourth city ive been in today. After this and then go get some sleep and thank you all for helping come we are gonna work together, we have to turn North Carolina blue. [applause] mr. Bloomberg im always glad to be in charlotte in no small part because the city is named after my mother, Charlotte Bloomberg britain bloomberg. [laughter] mr. Bloomberg im just telling you it is. She died back in 2011 but she lived over well over a third of the length of time america has been is been in existence. I spoke to her when she was at home and i was in new york, i called her every day into this day if you want to talk to my mother, she is still on the answering machine of the house i call shen and if you probably wont respond very well but she will certainly say hello. Anyways, i think its great to remember my mother and to tell her what she is say to me, dont let it go to your head. So its not going to my head that ive been able to come to a place like this. It didnt i didnt grow up where i could speak to a big crowd. In fact if you take a look, none of my fellow candidates with the exception of amy are in carolina tonight. They have all been afraid to come and talk to you and say the truth but a critical issue. Such an item that is say it. Is not barbecue sauce. [applause] of ouromberg one campaign shares is the mayor of columbia, South Carolina, and he may never forgive me for saying that. But needless to say im happy to be in North Carolina were you really know barbecue. I dont want to start a rivalry between new york and North Carolina, but i do want to point out that some of your states famous icons have new york roots. Michael jordan born in brooklyn. The battleship North Carolina built in brooklyn. Nascar, ok youve got us there. Been in north kelowna time since we launched our campaign a few months ago. I think thats more than any other candidate and the reason is simple. If we are going to beat donald trump in november, we need to take him on in swing states like North Carolina. And we cannot wait until the primary is over to start campaigning here. [applause] mr. Bloomberg our work starts now. We built a Great Campaign team here, ive got more than 10 field offices and 124 staff on the ground in this state. Everyone is working hard, early voting is in full swing and we are now only two days away from super tuesday. Now i know we can be donald trump here and this week again we saw why the selection is so important. Right now we have a leadership vacuum in the white house and he could not have come at a worse time. The coronavirus has already arrived in america and make no mistake, the white house is endangering lives and hurting our economy and the fact is President Trump was briefed on the virus two months ago but he buried his head in the sand. At that time a virus that originated in a port city in china has exploded into a Global Pandemic and thousands of people have died and his failure to not prepare us with the ability to respond, that is the problem we have. He is doing whatever he is doing much too late. He even said that he thought it was a democratic hoax. The president we know is not a scientist and thats a nice ways to put it. He doesnt even believe in science. And his incompetence does put a solid risk. And last night at one of the rallies when he called this democratic hoax it was a time of the president should be putting politics aside and rallying the American People behind him and he continues to try to divide us by playing partisan politics. This week we all know the stock market has plunged out of fear but also because investors have no confidence that this president is capable of managing the crisis. , he firedwhat we know scientist, he tried to cut funding percent is for disease control. He failed to invest in Emergency Preparedness and in situations like this it is crucial to the government provide clear consistent and honest answers. But trump has done exactly the opposite. He developed a lot devoted a lot of time to public health, yeah right. I did that, he didnt do that as mayor. I did that for my philanthropy and while mayor of new york city. I also built a Global Business and i can tell you we can spend a lot of time even in our company worrying about the virus. So i understand the economic damage the bad policy can cause whether their trade policies. But right now the market is pricing in the president s management incompetence and we will have to pay a heavy financial cost for that in addition to even more serious costs if we dont do more. The Democratic Party is the answer for this. We have to have strong competent people in washington. [applause] mr. Bloomberg we need someone who is led during a crisis and who believes in science, invest in prevention preparation and listens to experts. We need a president will make protecting the health of the American People the number one priority at all times. And i can promise you that the kind of president i will be praying i will be. But first we have to win an ,lection and i need your help so i hope all of you will help our North Carolina team get out the vote here and i hope you will tell your friends and family and neighbors how important their votes are. And if they asked what my campaign is about, just tell them this. I am running to defeat donald trump. [applause] mr. Bloomberg i am running a campaign for change, for sanity, a campaign for honesty and inclusion, a campaign for compassion and a campaign for human decency. [applause] mr. Bloomberg and im running to restore honor to our government and to build a country that we can be proud of and to start getting things done and to start putting the united back in the United States of america. [applause] mr. Bloomberg some of you may remember back in philadelphia 2016i spoke of the Democratic Convention and i warned the donald trump wasnt fit for office. And then in 2018 i worked to help hold him accountable by supporting candidates who flipped 21 seats in the house. That made nancy pelosi speaker and allowed us to begin Holding Donald trump accountable through the impeachment process. This year we all know that trump strategy. Attacked democrats, make their plans look unrealistic, unaffordable and undoable. While that is not gonna work against you and me because we have the record and the resources to defeat him in the swing states the democrats lost in 2016. I know we can do it, but to get it done we have to nominate someone at the top of the ticket who can build a Broad Coalition that rallies democrats and impacts attract independents and moderate republicans. Because that is the only way we will win. That, i did that in new york in three races, i wanted the most populous large city in the United States and i know im not a typical politician, ive never worked in washington before. I dont make pieinthesky promises and as you seen in the debates im not someone who just yells slogans even when they are not true. Need a leader who is ready to be commanderinchief, not college debater in chief. Someone who talks turkey, has a record of accomplishment in all the issues facing our country and who has the resources to be trump, that is made. If you want a debater, youve got the wrong guy here. So i give virtually all my Companies Profits to charity and there is no better investment i can make in the future of our gettry then spending to donald trump out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. [applause] mr. Bloomberg and if you think my campaign is expensive, just imagine with four more years of donald trump will cost our country. Somebody the other day said to me you are spending a lot of money and i said yes i am, im spending the money to get rid of donald trump and he said spend more. Catastrophe if this race ends with donald trump in the white house. Even though donald trump and i are both from new york, we couldnt be more different. In fact you might say i am the untrump. He breaks promises, i keep them. He is a climate denier, im an engineer. I actually believe in science, imagine that. He tweets, i follow facts. And respect data and tells the truth. He looks up to people who inherited their wealth like him and i started with nothing but my parents teaching a hardworking ethical behavior and i will raise taxes on the wealthy including me to get the revenue we need to start fighting incoming quality and paying for infrastructure and investing in Emergency Preparedness and expanding health care and improving education and all the other things we need to strengthen our great country. My whole career has been i believe we need nasa less talk, less partisanship, less division, less tweeting. What about my commitment, if i get to the white house, no more tweeting from the oval office ever again. [applause] in all fairness its easy for me to say since i cant spell. [laughter] mr. Bloomberg but then again, neither can donald. [laughter] mr. Bloomberg ive been pretty blessed in my life and there is nothing donald trump can do or say that can hurt you and me working together. But he has hurt a lot of other people not slam running. Stand up for every american is loss of job or lost their insurance but cant pay that college tuition. Youve all heard the slogan michael get it done. Limited two seconds to say what the it is in that staying, saying, it means winning and sending donald trump back to maralago permanently. And that is just the beginning because getting it done means finally providing Health Insurance to every american and lowering cost for everyone else. Im getting it done means passing common sense gun safety laws to protect her children community. Done means making america a Global Leader in the fight against Climate Change and getting it done means creating good jobs with higher wages and getting it done means addressing discrimination and inequality and getting it done means filing finally fixing a broken immigration system and a path to citizenship for 11 Million People living in the shadows. Meanstting it done protecting a womans right to choose and appointing judges who defend that right. [applause] mr. Bloomberg it wont be easy but i know we can do it because unlike other candidates, i dont just talk about doing things, ive a record of reaching across the island getting them done. I want to give you a couple quick examples. Other candidates talk about raising teacher salaries. In new york we raise teacher salaries 43 . And we also raised salaries for the firefighters, sanitation workers, Police Officers and all the people who work in the city. If you want Good Government you have to pay a good wage so people can focus on their jobs. People talk about improving Public Schools will i can tell you we raise Graduation Rates by more than 40 when i was in office. The talk of improving health care, new york we cut the number of uninsured by 40 providing care for mothers and babies and raising Life Expectancy new york city by three years. So if you want to live longer, you could move to new york or you could just vote from a. [applause] in new york we cut the Carbon Footprint by 15 and helped replace 330 coalfired power plants with clean energy across this country. And others talk about stopping gun violence. In new york we did it come we help critic Gun Safety Group with 6 million members across this country and we are working to pass common sense gun laws in states around this country. We have 20 states that have those gun laws. I know how to bring people together to solve problems. Thats how ive run my business and thats how i ran new york city. I was elected seven weeks after the devastating terrorist attacks of 9 11. Our city was in tatters and our economy was in recession. But i brought people together in the city and we created nearly 500,000 new jobs come 170 5000 units of formal housing, reduced street homeless by 30 , we launched new programs to fight poverty and opioids and rebuilt our city stronger than ever. Over the past two decades we have taken on the toughest fights and weve one. Weve taken on donald trump and weve won many times on gun safety, coal pollution and flipping the house blew in the 2018 election. We are ready to do it again. So let me finish by telling you i cannot do it alone though. If you want quality Health Insurance for everyone, not empty promises, if you want to combat inequality with fairer taxes and better jobs, if you support my commitment to quality Public Education no matter what zip code you live in, if you share my belief in opportunity for all and not just for a few. If you are ready to protect and defend the constitution of the United States of america and if you are ready to clean out the oval office and get things done, than i would be honored to have your support, your hope, your health help and your vote. Thank you for having me. Good night. [applause] sen. Klobuchar thank you. It is so great to be back with all of you. I first wanted to recognize tom perez. I know he is out there. You are your incredible governor, roy cooper, who i just saw out there. Someone i was so honored she introduced me the other day in raleigh, chief justice sherry beasley. Thank you. What an incredible woman and then of course all of you who helped are helping us turn North Carolina blue. I wanted to start out by congratulating the Vice President on South Carolina and now we know that all eyes are on North Carolina. As wayne mentioned i really was proud to keynote your dinner if you years ago and i did that for my friend kay hagan. [applause] whenever i think of k i think of yellow and orange. She was a person of such joy. I was honored to come back for her funeral a few months ago and she had that last hard years but chip was at her side every step of the way and one of the things that i always remember about kay and i think i said it when i was at your dinner was one of her best lines ever and she had many. She would always say you know there are two types of senators, those who spend all day on their hair and then the women senators. [applause] thing, obuchar the other the other thing that i remember about your dinner was that you promised me that you were going to restore the power of governor coopers vito. And you did it. You did it. You had a candidate in every single district. You elected a whole bunch of new people. I love working for an entire ticket and i think you all know a little bit about me if you saw my announcement in the middle of the blizzard. With four inches of snow on my head i did it just to impress North Carolina. A lot of people predicted i would not make it through that speech and then they thought it would not make it through the summer and then i would not make it to the debates, but here i am headed into super tuesday. , that last debate in South Carolina was one i wont forget. I dont know if you saw the photo, i dont always have viral moments because i try to answer the question and i also remember that theres a bunch of people out there watching who havent decided yet. Maybe independents who didnt even go to 2016. There i was there was a dispute going on between the Vice President and tom steyer who was on either side of me. At one point in no mayor bloomberg was here earlier but the president had gone after him and claimed he was 54. I want to know that im the only one on that stage that has the credit im 54. So when im on those debates i stand on this little box so you can see me, so im on my box and those who start going at it. The Vice President stays in his podium but tom steyer is moving into my space and they are gesturing and i cannot move back because i will fall off my box [laughter] sen. Klobuchar and then i think of myself as im smiling i think if tom steyer accidentally hits me off that box, he has deep pockets so im going to be so ok. [laughter] [applause] case, lobuchar so in any our campaign has beaten the odds every step of the way and part of that is because i believe that despite the deceit used despite what you see on that debate states, what unites us is so much bigger than what divides us. [laughter] [applause] sen. Klobuchar we know in North Carolina this is an economic check on the president , a president who hasnt increased the minim wage. A present was made a bunch of promises about bringing the rights of pharmaceuticals that he hasnt delivered on. But we also know it is something more than that. To a lot of people from the state. That may be stayed home in 2016, may be voted for another candidate and those of the people of want to bring with me. Those of the people that look at this election and they think, i think i want to bring decency back to the white house. President ands their member the days when used to watch the present even if you did vote for the president and your kids could watch the president and now this president is at a rally and a kid comes in the room, the parents have to mute the volume. Because you have no idea what hes going to say. This is also a patriotism check. This president stood next to Vladimir Putin and when a reporter asked about russian interference in our elections, he looked at that ruthless dictator and made a joke about it. Think about it. Hundreds of thousands of americans have lost their lives on the battlefield standing up democracy, thatll world war ii was about. Thousands of people from this patriotic state for little girls at a church in alabama and ill be in alabama tomorrow. For little girls lost their lives at the height of the civil rights movement. Of ourtrying to be part democracy. And others were trying to shove them out of it. The greatest moments in the worst moments in this countrys history have been about democracy. Thatsights, freedom, what that lunch counter was about that i got to visiting greensboro just two days ago. It is about our democracy. And this president makes a joke about it. What i think is this. Donalds Worst Nightmare is that are fired up democrats will march to victory with independents and moderate republicans. His Worst Nightmare is that the people in the middle who are tired of the insults and the backandforth in the mean tweets have someone to vote for. So if you feel stuck in the middle of the extremes in our politics, youve got a home with me. Let me tell you about what i think we need to get done as a party. No matter who you are supporting. First of all, we must have the constitutional amendment to overturn citizens united. That is all about outside money. [applause] sen. Klobuchar in this day knows this so well that court case that a quote everywhere where they said that the legislature had discriminated, the republicans with surgical with surgical precision against african americans. We must restore the federal Voting Rights act. [applause] sen. Klobuchar and passed my bill to register every kid automatically in this country when they turn 18. [applause] sen. Klobuchar if target can find a pair of shoes with a number in hawaii, we should be able to register everyone in this country. Getting rid of gerrymandering, something you know too well in the state and getting rid of voting purges. Abrams, whoacey should be the governor of georgia right now, she put it this way about purges. She said if you dont go to church or synagogue or mosque for a year or two, you dont lose your right to worship. And if you dont go to a meeting like this for a year or two, you dont lose your right under the constitution to assemble. And if you havent voted for a few years and you show up at the voting booth and you find out your name is not on that list, you should never lose your right to vote. That is voting purges. [applause] can weobuchar what else do . We can end Donald Trumps shameful act of trying to kick people off their insurance for preexisting conditions. We can do that. We can take on big pharma and bring down the cost of prescription drugs. We can take on the nra and when we were in charleston this last week, once again you see that church and you think about what happened in that church with the worshipers on a White Nationalist walked in and gunned them down. You know what bill is sitting on Mitch Mcconnells desk right now, the bill to close the charleston loophole. To simply give Law Enforcement time to look at background checks. What else is on there . Universal background checks. The only way we get these gun safety bill done in some any of the things i talked about today is by winning not just eking out a victory at 4 00 in the morning. If we do it this way will not be we do it by winning big come by taking back the u. S. Senate and sending Mitch Mcconnell packing. [applause] sen. Klobuchar you noels we have to do, we have to make it easier for people to pay back Student Loans and make it easier for people to afford and in the state of governor hunt, a state that understands how important education is. I found 137 things that a new president can do in her first 100 days that are legal without congress and the thing that i could do in the first 100 seconds is fire betsy devos. [applause] sen. Klobuchar then there are foreign challenges. Because we have a president that repeatedly decides to side with tyrants instead of allies. Who decides to side with dictators instead of innocence. So what should we do . We should repair alliances around the world, two, we should renew our leadership around the world. Renegotiate back due to National Agreements like the international Climate Change agreement and the Iranian Nuclear agreement and four, we should respond appropriately to threats around the world. That means not tweeting out at 4 00 in your bathrobe, issues of international importance. And five come we should reassert americas values. Those are my five but they really boil down to one, return to sanity in our foreign policy. This is our goal. To out we are not going divide the divider in chief, but we know that we can bring dignity back to the white house. Because when i talk to people and i say what i like to think about that we need to build a blue wall of democratic votes around states of North Carolina and states in the midwest and when we build that blue wall its going to be so great and the next election 2020 and we will make donald trump pay for it. [applause] sen. Klobuchar one of the things i find when i talk to people that may be voted for him or stayed home if they get sick and tired of his whining, it might not be the first thing you think about but they are, they are tired of it. He blames everyone, he blames barack obama for problems, he blames the fed chair he nominated, he blames the generals he commands and yes, he wants blames the entire kingdom of denmark. Who does that. Thats what he does. He even blames the Prime Minister of canada for cutting version, thee home canadian version of home alone 2. Instead i want you to picture this and i will talk here at the end about myself because i have a different background the donald trump. He got 413 million in the course of his life through his from his dad. My grandpa worked 1500 feet underground in the minds in northern minnesota. He never graduated from high toool because he had to help take care of his nine brothers and sisters, his parents died when he was very young and then one of the youngest kids was brought to an orphanage, he said he would go get her, he was the oldest boy and when he had enough money he borrowed a car and brought her back. He and my grandma raised nine kids and then they have my dad and his brother and my grandpa saved money in a coffee can in the basement to send my dad to a twoyear Community College. That was our family trust. And i can tell you that 413 million does not fit in a coffee can in the basement. From there, my dad went to Community College and then the university of minnesota. He became a writer and a journalist, he covered the vikings if you want to know something about , he wrote a book that sadly still relevant today called will them on it called will this Minnesota Vikings when a super bowl . [laughter] sen. Klobuchar my mom grew up in milwaukee, she wanted to be a teacher. She came to minnesota and taught second grade until she was 70 years old. Today, and before you north carolinians, i stand before you today is the granddaughter of an iron or minor, as the daughter of a teacher in a newspaperman. As the first woman elected to the u. S. Senate from the state of minnesota and a candidate for president of the United States. [applause] sen. Klobuchar that is because we live in a country of shared dreams, so no matter where you come from or who you know or what you look like or the color of your skin or how much or where you worship or where youre from that you can make it in the United States of america. Times come back so many and defined expectations. I had a lot of time to think about what we want in a president during those impeachment hearings. Because all of that was about the president putting his private interests, his partisan interests in front of the interests of our country. And we were up there so late at night i would get blearyeyed and we were talking about the process so much that i would look at my colleagues and start to think that it looked like a founding father. As i sat there and thought about this president i realize one key thing and that is despite everything else, his lack of respect for the law, the way he violates the law, the way he does not care about his democracy and bulldozers throw democracy every day i thought of how he lacked empathy because great leaders can put themselves in the shoes of the people they represent. There is an old story about Franklin Delano roosevelt that he was so loved because he got us through one of the worst times in our country and when he died they put his body on a train that went from georgia to washington dc. Sea stood by the train tracks show the respect. A reporter came upon a guy who had his hat across his chest and he was sobbing and the reporter said do you mind me asking, do you know the president and the guy said no, i didnt know the president , but the president knew me. He knew me. Trust betweencred the president of the United States and the people of this country. So i can tell you this, if youre trying to figure out how to stretch your paycheck or the paycheck of someone in your family to pay for their rent and their mortgage, i will fight for you and i know you. If you are trying to decide between helping your parents with longterm care like i struggle with with my dad or childcare or college for your kid, i know you and i will fight for you. And if someone in your family is trying to figure out how theyre going to fill their prescription for insulin or fill their refrigerator with food, i know you and i will fight for you. That is empathy, thats being able to put yourself in the shoes of the people that you represent. So i ask for your support, i have been on a long journey and i love this state and i love the memory of kay hagan. But i can tell you this. No matter what happens when we head into that convention in milwaukee, we have a mission, in the words of my friend john mccain, the last thing he showed me the last time i saw before he died, he showed me the words that said there is nothing more liberating than fighting for a cause larger than yourself. That is what this election is for america. So remember, despite all these fights, what unites us is bigger than what divides us. Thank you for all youve done per lets win north
