shaheen,r jeanne former governor of this state, what is your earliest memory of the new hampshire primary? in 1976.een: it was we got married in 1969. we were in graduate school for the 72 primary. it was the 76 primary when we worked for jimmy carter. >> why jimmy carter? set -- sen. shaheen: i was teaching in a newly integrated school in mississippi. he became governor of georgia. he was very forward thinking. he hung a picture of dr. martin luther king in the governor's office. that meant something to me -- a lot to me as someone teaching in a newly integrated school. when he started running for president, we went to the first meeting his campaign he had here in 1975. >> from his win in iowa to his win in new hampshire, what was it like back then? sen. shaheen: that was the first time i think people paid attention to the iowa caucuses. memo early onad a how he could win and become president and it focused on doing well in iowa so he would get some attention propelling him into new hampshire and winning new hampshire. 1984,king back, 1980, 1988, what do you remember about those campaigns? runningheen: i remember gary hart's campaign. he was in insurgent candidate against an incumbent vice president. he came to new hampshire and one. lot seven through the yes to voters, lots of enthusiastic -- lots of enthusiastic voters. it was exciting. >> did he give you a call? how did you end up with his campaign? sen. shaheen: one of the great things about new hampshire is if you have worked on a campaign as a pet -- at the presidential level, when the next candidates come around, you have an opportunity to meet those candidates and a see who you think has a message and can appeal to voters and can lead this country. i had the opportunity to meet gary hart along with the number of other people who were running in 1984. alan cranston and walter mondale, and john glenn. it was a big field that year. i was very fortunate to get to see many of those candidates. >> successful democrats who won the presidency -- bill clinton. what -- where were you then and what do you remember about that race? sen. shaheen: he was the comeback kid. i had supported bob carey, but i was not very involved because i was focused on my race for the state senate. i did not get too involved in that campaign. about 2000 eight, barack obama and hillary clinton? sen. shaheen: i did not endorse anyone because i was running for the senate in 2008. hillary surprised everyone in 2008 because barack obama won the iowa caucus when no one thought he could. hillary did not win and everyone said, "obama is coming into new hampshire, he will win new hampshire." hillary won new hampshire by three points. key to new hampshire is organization. you have one statewide, you understand the democratic -- won statewide, you understand it. what does that mean? sen. shaheen: the key to new hampshire and why the presidential primary is so important is this is a state where people pay attention. -- only do we have everyone everybody runs for office every two years, we have town meetings for all but two cities in this state, and we have a presidential primary every four years. voters ask tough questions. some voters, independent voters see candidates on both sides and make up their minds. that is very important to the presidential selection process, to have a place where you have to have more than money and name recognition. you have to engage with voters at the grassroots level. organization is important, but what voters are looking for is someone who can win in november and has a vision for this country for what we need to do to ensure that my grandchildren can have the same opportunities here that i was able to have. voters are going to make a decision based on who they think can win in november, but who has a vision for where this country needs to go. >> especially after what happened in iowa, a lot of debate on dutch across the country on why iowa, why new hampshire -- across the country on why iowa, why new hampshire? sen. shaheen: we have been doing this for a while. we were the first state to have a primary. it is also a state where voters are very engaged. every presidential election we have one of the highest turnouts in the nation. that is important. we need a place where voters are paying attention, asking tough questions of candidates, and you have to go in and to do that and engagement in that living rooms, diners, and small businesses across the state. that is very important to the presidential selection process. if we started like a state like new york or ohio, you would not be able to do that. to win in those states you need to have a lot of money or name recognition or some way to get those. you do not necessarily need that in new hampshire. day, recast for primary cloudy and cold, but no heavy snow. as you look at the turnout on primary day, what will give you an indication of what -- who may win? sen. shaheen: we are projected to have a record turnout. we will see. -- differentd places a vote at different times. people in manchester will vote early because working people have to get up and go to work. they either vote late or they vote early. in my town of mad bury, the polls do not shed and they close earlier at night. people will vote at different times and that will have something to do with how candidates do as you are trying to look at, well, the turnout is great in manchester, but not so good in southern rockingham. something, or it may not. clearly technology has changed, but the basic principles are the same? sen. shaheen: i think it is. i would like to see the dark money out of politics. people can spend all kinds of money in our campaigns and we do not necessarily know who those are. someld like to look at other way of reducing the cost of campaigns or making sure that if you are contributing to a campaign you have to declare who specialso p no what the interests are -- so people know what the special interests are. jeanne shaheen. thank you for speaking with us. >> here is a look ahead. at noon eastern pete buttigieg rallya get out the vote in nashua.
