Department of homeland security. President ial candidate Pete Buttigieg spoke with the public. The second earliest Democratic Caucus after isla. After iowa. Thank you. Thank you, senator. And thank you to everybody providing such great leadership in this state and in these communities. Looksay that nevada today like the future of what america will be like in the decades ahead. If that is true, we had a Bright Future in this country. This you for joining us on saturday. Thank you for caring enough about the future of the country to be part of this process. By asking you to form a image in your mind. Asnt it in as much detail you can as you visualize this day that will come soon, sooner rather than later. I want you to picture that first day that the sun comes up over nevada and donald trump is no longer the president of the United States. Are we ready for that day . I we ready to do what it takes to bring that day about . [chanting buttigieg] so, i am running to be the president on that day. But, i want you to really think about what we will need on that day. If you think about it, you can see what will be waiting for the next president. That is the day some of our problems will end. Are ready to put the chaos and corruption in the rearview mirror. But the tweets in the rearview mirror. But still, that is the day that our work begins. Think about how divided our country will be on that day, even more polarized and exhausted from fighting and we are right now, in need of a president who is focused on unifying the American People. Yes, Something Else will be true at the same time, the issues that brought us to this point will be even more serious than they are now. The sun will be coming up over a climate that is a few years away from no return. The sun will be coming up over an economy where they say everything is great because the dow jones is looking great, but one job is not enough for far too many people. The sun will be coming up over schools, where kids are learning active shooter drills before they are old enough to read. To rise to meet those kinds of issues and to do it in a way that will lead our country more unified and not divided. That is what the presidency is for. I believe that the presidency has a purpose and its purpose is not to glorify the president. That is why and asking for your support. [applause] and i see the roadmap to get that done. It all starts with the values that we share as an American People. If we Pay Attention to what , ite values require of us can be a very progressive direction, if we Pay Attention. What it reallyo requires of us. It is not an easy as the president who throws himself a military parade. A president who avoided serving when it was his turn and asked like overthrowing military justice may seem promilitary. It is more than that. I am talking about the kind of support for our troops that honors them with a commitment never to send them into harms way. Harms way, if there is an alternative. Our country consists of people. You cannot love a country, if you hate half of the people in it. It will take Something Else. Businesslly need keeping this country safe, we have to recognize that it starts right here, at home. The Second Amendment can never totwisted into an excuse keep our schools and our Shopping Centers and our places of worship safe from gun violence. We must act in the name of our security. If we are serious about protecting our country, we have to protect our future. We need to deal with Climate Change in a way that creates jobs. We have to do that to keep this country safe. Oft is where that value patriotism leads me. I am thinking about the values that they are using to try to divide us, and how they might unite us. Here is the thing. Our country was built on the idea. Value andold that , thatet the faithful know the choice can do something a lot better than what we saw out of texas. Refusing to accept refugees. I am talking about listening, no matter what your faith tradition is, listening to the idea. I was hungry and you fed me. The golden rule that we treat others the way that we want to be treated. Those valueso while insisting that god does not belong to a Political Party in the u. S. I am talking about values the whaley value work. If we value work, we have to value workers. Im thinking about values like democracy. Democracy, value of the belief that it matters morally, that every vote is counted. We have to put an end to it. It is why we have to do something about these districts that are being drawn by politicians to pick out their politicians to pick out their voters. It is why we have to do something about money in politics. That is what the amendment process is for because it is the right thing to do. This is our chance to make good on those values. One more value we have to take seriously, freedom. I do not just mean cutting regulation and program out there. I am not interested in preserving amazon rita to pay federal into and federal income taxes. I am talking about the freedom to live a life of your choosing. I am a fan of keeping county clerks out of the business of telling you who you should marry. [applause] lets keep business out of whatay of telling women their reproductive choices should be. Of american freedom. Another part is looking to the Public Sector to step up. We are responsible for paving and plowing the street. Maybe not a lot of plowing in las vegas. We support infrastructure because we know you are not free if you do not have a road to get you where you are going. We deliver schools at the local level. And washington believes in Public Education and support teachers. [applause] yes, it means doing something about health care because you are not free, if you do not have it. Make sure every american can access the plan, but trust you to decide whether you want it. The important thing is to make sure that one way or the other, there is no such thing as an uninsured american in the future. You see how these values can forward to help our country be more united. We have act now. Four years. Wait somethingwait to do about the crisis, acting on Mental Health and addiction with as much openness as we talk we have dreamers and mixed status families who cannot wait one more year living in the shadows. We need to give people that pathway to citizenship. It is why we cannot wait to make this a country where your race has no bearing on your wealth or your relationship with law enforcement. It cannot wait. Act, we have an opportunity to bring about a better life. I know there is a lot of fighting in politics. I will never let us get so caught up. The point is not the fight. The point is what we are fighting for. An end to the crisis of belonging in this country. That is the opportunity in front of us. I am calling out to progressives and moderates. Put an end to this white house and bring about a Better Future for this country. That is how we are going to win. A littlers have grown bit since the first time we turned up in nevada, looking to make friends, but still not too big that we cannot have a conversation. Cards from youno when you are coming in. Moe back tok the stage. [applause] we have the best organizers and volunteers . What moral leadership will you provide to schools regarding bigotry and bullying . What a great question. If you are here, give a wave or a holler. This is what i am talking about when i mentioned that crisis of belonging. You do not belong because your religion, the language that you speak at home or who you love. It starts in school. That means fixing it starts in school. Part of it policy i am a toicy guy, but there is more it than that. It is not just that. There is Something Else in the presidency. I do not think we understood how bad we need it until he saw a president who does not need it at all. [applause] tone. Setting a to send that message to policy, but is also how we treat other people. We are not all going to agree. This is not what it is about. It is about making sure that everyone belongs. The only thing that does not belong in our country right now is hatred and exclusion. [applause] what will you do to stop the rising cost of prescription drugs . Great question. I know that most of the attention is going to the argument for medicare for all. This plan is the best etc. But we have to talk about a lot of other things in health care. Shortageo talk about a of care workers. We have to talk about longterm care and racial inequity. We have to talk about rural health and we have to talk about cost. Here is what we are going to do. For those on medicare. It will be monthly. Many people who are delaying a medical procedure, waiting to get a prescription to makeecause you have sure you hit your outofpocket cap. It is not like it is good for your health. Not a lot of us experience the economy on a yearly basis. Int of our bills are coming every month, not every year. Our paychecks are every two weeks or every month, not every year. Companiesve seen drug increase prices, not just because they have to or because there is a shortage of a rare ingredient. Things that you need in order to live, insolent, epipen, lifesaving medication. I am seeing people here that are impacted by that, not because they have to, but because they can. Anyill enforce against company that raises the price of their drugs faster than the price of inflation just because they can. We have to put a stop to that. [applause] is so commons sense, it is amazing that it has not happened yet. The time has come to make sure that medicare is prepared to negotiate prices with drug companies. Why dont you have cats . [laughter] nothing against cats. He is allergic and that is my excuse. Ou have two dogs they are rescue dogs. Truman came to us. He had a rough life before. E warmed up to us we thought he might be a little bit lonely at home because we were working such long hours. He said go meet this dog. He is laidback. Not at all true. With one eye and is on a journey. We will just draw the line at those two dogs for now. [applause] what is your number one Foreign Policy priority. Is interesting here . The number one priority is to restore the credibility of the u. S. [applause] was deployed, i can one of the thing that protected me was the flag on my shoulder. That it was known to our enemies and our allies to stand for a country that kept our word. If we lose that, we lose everything. About the 21stnk century threats that we are savers with, terrorism, cybersecurity, election security, that will take more cooperation than ever. I will never hesitate to use the tools of the u. S. Strength when necessary, but i will also never hesitate to make sure that we reach out and include our allies , to build up the friendships that do the bulk of the work of keeping us safe. [applause] since you are a millennial, what are your plans to address technology, security and micro see . Early on, the government hesitated to do new legislation. It is no longer a frail flower. We need to make sure that democracy comes into play and see that the tech is working for us and not the other way around. Did any of you see the hearings were we had a tech founder going before congress and in became haddantly clear that people no idea what they were regulating. That is how the American People get outmaneuvered by companies that are too powerful, so powerful that when they make a decision as a company, they are really making a policy decision that we have to live by. It is lovingly to stand up against anticompetitive behavior and laws explaining our rights over the data. Even when we get give it to a company we still have to have certain rights. When you have an afghan have to click through agree. Who has actually read . Most of us dont read that, but in the eyes of todays Legal Framework it counts as the goodfaith contract we have entered into. It we have to make sure we set a baseline, not 50 different policies on Data Security and data privacy to make sure we are protected and make sure we have to recognize this is a security challenge. As we speak, countries, probably not russia are working right now was some of the best minds that our can muster to undermine democracy and we need a understanding of those security threats. Right now, we have a president whose idea of a security andnology is a 17thcentury that is not going to keep us safe. We need to make sure we have the right kind of strategy to real deterrence and make it not worth your while as a country, so even if you can, you figure out you shouldnt. [applause] as a president , what will you do for low Income Housing . Bet it is a lot of folks thinking about it. With your help, we will make it happen. As soon as we do, we have a lot of work to do on affordable overng to my plan invests 4 billion. What does that actually look like . All, we will have more housing and we will get more units built through funding and promoting local policies. A lot of this is working with local governments to make sure we have inclusionary on that. Part of it is making sure if you have a family with kids you are automatically eligible for these kinds of housing vouchers and right now, there is a long backlog. We can put an end at least for kids and families with kids as we work on the tougher areas that involve Mental Health and addiction. We estimate for that as we look to the future, it is around making sure everyone gets a chance to thrive because it is such a basic thing because if you dont have it come you dont have freedom. Thank you. [applause] what will you do to connect more with hispanic voters . Eli . Ere is the lack thanks for coming. First of all, we will make sure we speak to the issues that affect hispanic voters. We talk about everyone is the same, but there are different issues are different families have different issues. It we have to talk about Economic Empowerment and supporting businesses led by latinos and we have to talk about health care which is a challenge for senate families. It is the issues, the also the engagement. [speaking spanish] to make sure we are getting that across and with your help, i hope you will help us do it. How do you compete against your billionaire competitor who billion 10 million into nevada . It is a bit of a challenge. Forbes magazine did this ranking of all the candidates by. Ndividual net worth guess where i am . All the way on the bottom. We are doing ok, but by the standards of people running for president , smack on the bottom, so not a millionaire. In fact, i think i will be the only one on the stage who is not a millionaire or a billionaire. Then again, we seem to be running ahead of folks who have a lot more money than we do. We started this thing almost exactly a year ago. We had an exploratory committee. It was a staff of four in office that was about the size of the stage, had no big mailing list, no years of building up a Committee List of Campaign Contributions and now the have taken our place as one of the campaigns. Having said that, in the event that anyone would like to go should then any amount, we would be very grateful for that. Get briefed about the southern border and how will you handle the crisis differently . Great question. Following the challenges at the border closely. I have a fantastic security and policy team that includes a lot of the best minds from the Obama Administration and other parts. F National Security experience they are doing really good work. What we are seeing is inhumane and unacceptable conditions that on the unitedain States Government and so, it is not only we have to do a lot of legislative work to fix immigration and create that pathway to citizenship, protect reamers and make sure they are first in line because reamers are every bit as american as the rest of us and dont have the documentation to show for it. Work we have to get done through policy. There is stuff we have to get through they won. Then the separation is familyy over separation is permanently over. Ther thing we changed, change, the obstacles when seeking asylum is a legal right under International Law and third, we are going to work to make sure there is no longer any such thing as a forprofit Detention Center for children to read it we will put an end to that on day one. We have time for one more. How will you secure our schools and what are your policies for gun reform . Thanks for coming. How order you how old are you . 14. Good on you. You are way ahead of the curve. Engaged speakse well. Im glad to your concerned about policy and politics, but i dont think you should have to feel concerned about physical safety at goal. I think we should deal with that so you dont have to. Is, theking thing American People, including most republicans and gunowners want us to undertake commonsense reforms and Congress Wont do it. That is why we need a president willing to go to the towns of those banning and the way and asked them why they are sending down their own constituents. What do we do . Universal background checks at a minimum. Red flag walls like you passed here in nevada that will make it possible to disarm abusers and people that are a threat. You showed it can be done and it is constitutional. And come up when it comes to the weaponry that is available, the kind of ammunition and he kind of guns, anything remotely that resembles the kind of weapons i trained on in afghanistan has no business being near a school. Form oh 40 for mo. I want to thank you for being part of this process and i can tell by your questions in the thegy brought to the room, you are aware of the power you have cured of, you have a among the scale when it comes to deciding the future of the country and i can tell you are taking that seriously. It is just a few weeks away and you will be a huge part of making a decision about what happens next. I will lead you with this thought. I think a lot of us are watching what is happening and it is just exhausting. , it justchment thing wears you out to even think about, but if we give in to that sense of exhaustion and that sense of hopelessness, that is when the cynics when youre at it we cannot let that happen and so im here to make the case for hope. Ate is a funny thing to use a time with this because we know what we are up against as a country. Idea of hope when out of style, but i am here to make the case that running for office is an act of hope. That is what they call us the 2020 hopefuls because we are here as an expression of hope and so are you. It it is an act of hope to actort a candidate and an of hope to show up at a caucus, so are you ready to spread your sense of hope . Are you ready to bring about that sunrise that i was talking about and launch the one that will come next . Are you ready to find some joy in making the history together . Going to make is me the next nominee and your next president and when you do that, i will work every day to make you proud. Thank you for being here and we will see you on the campaign trail.
