Address Climate Change, student debt, and the impeachment trial of President Trump in the senate. This is an hour and 10 minutes. Thank you so much. Thank you, liz for that beautiful introduction and for your great leadership. Thank you. All right, thank you very, very much. And then also i want to thank todd, beautiful job. Thank you for your work and all you do for working people. Thank you for that. Molly, who has been with me since the st. Patricks day parade. Where are you, molly . There she is, very good and i also know rob is here. Thank you. Rob is way ahead of his time on Climate Change and you should all be really proud of the work that he has done and then also where are you . Right over here. Thank you. Its great to have her nationally. Everyone comes up to me all the time. Janice, where are you, janice . A new member of the iowa city council. Thank you, and janices support means so much and i also want to mention our great organizers ray rachel, keira, mohammad, and claire, thank you very much for all you are doing. All right, so we are in middle of what someone has called the surge, and we keep going up. A friend of mine sent a text and it had an auto correct by mistake and is said congratulations on your insurgency. [laughter] sen. Klobuchar im happy to take those words. Its fine by me and i think that is what you are seeing all over the state in and all over the country. We had our first doubledigit National Poll yesterday. [applause] we are wellar aware that some of the other candidates are more wellknown than me, that they are people that ran for the president before. What i love about the early states, of nevada where im going next. Not because of the snow. It was planned and iowa and South Carolina and New Hampshire is the citizens of the states understand that they have a special obligation to make a decision. I think you all know that the candidate that was the frontrunner from the beginning isnt always the one that came up getting out of iowa and not always the one that became the president of the United States. I give you my great example to people who have come out strong and gone on to be president. Jimmy carter, bill clinton, and barack obama. [applause] sen. Klobuchar we are happy about this. Ever since that last debate, we brought in over 1 million in small contributions in 24 hours and we had them from regular people all over the country. We have been able to double our field offices in iowa. We have been able to double her our staff in New Hampshire and in other states and thats what we are doing. We are doing it the real way and we are doing it the grassroots way, and are doing. We are doing it the real way and theres a reason my buttons are green. Thats because that was the color of Paul Wellstone. Green was one of my mentors Paul Wellstone and if you know about him his best friend was tom harkin in the u. S. Senate. Paul was someone that started this campaign where no one expected him to win and he drove around in his green bus, like like we are doing and he drove a one through the snow kind of like what we are doing and one of the funny things he would do in his ads, because he had so much less money than his multimillionaire opponent he would talk really fast and he would say i have to talk really fast because i only have 30 seconds and i have to talk three times as much. In the last year of his life when he died so tragically early in his third senate race, he was going to win that race and had taken up a courageous vote against the iraq war, which is my position as well. That was not a good thing to do. He took that courageous vote and he was going to win that election, but he also that year had to tell the state that he he couldnt run back and forth, he was in a lot of pain. Year that he tragically died way too young with his wife sheila in a plane crash and their daughter and trusted members of their staff. That was the year where he he would stand in the back of the green bus because he couldnt run back and forth in the parades anymore. I actually had no opponent in my reelection which sounds really nice right now. To have no opponent. I had no opponent so i got to be there with him and i got to see what the magic was, and that is that he would stand in the back of the bus and wave. There were so many people in green shirts running around that bus, that you didnt even notice he wasnt running himself. Hundreds of people running around that bus. That is grassroots politics. That is politics at its best. When you bring people with you instead of shutting them out and thats a good way to begin our discussion today. Because we have this opportunity right now like we have never seen in this country. We have had the opportunity to to the world, to our fellow citizens, we have the opportunity to make very clear that our country has bigger hearts than that guy in the white house right now. We are so much bigger than that. [applause] sen. Klobuchar what unites us is so much bigger than what divides us. And you know, there are were the economic arguments we are having arehat debate stage, and we having them vigorously, thats for sure. And that is good to have. It is good for our party to debate these things. We are having debates about health care and what is the best way to cover people in the best way to make it easier to afford college and would we do about Climate Change, the existential item of this year. We are having those debates in a big, big way. But i dont want you to forget one thing, that what unites us is bigger than what divides us the second thing is us yes there there is an economic check going on right now on this president who was left our farmers and workers behind. Ask the small farmer who took out a coat rack to show he was the last guy standing in a plant. His job is just to maintain the equipment. Because of the trade war in debate waivers of donald trump gave to the oil companies, this guy brings out a coat rack and it has the uniforms of his coworkers that arent working there anymore. Their names are embroidered on there. Mark, derek, salvador, and he said they keep this coat rack and every uniform was nice. I remembered my coworkers. I remember maybe they can come back. Its an economic check on this guy, but its bigger than that. It is also a values check. It is also a decency check. It is a values check. [applause] it is abuchar patriotism check, a patriotism check. This is the guy that was at the g20 conference and standing at next to Vladimir Putin and reporter, ked him, a what about russias invasion are invasion . He turns to a report in and he makes a joke about it. He makes a joke. Think about this. Hundreds of thousands of americans, thousands of violent iowans have lost their lives standing up for democracy hours and went around the world. Thats what world war ii was about. Think about the poor innocent girls at the height of the Civil Rights Movement who lost their lives in that church in alabama simply because people were trying to extend that democracy and other people were trying to push back at it. So it wouldnt apply to them. So many of the big battles in our country and the big fights and the great moments and the bad moments have been about democracy, and we must and we deserve a president who puts our country and democracy first. Puts his private interest first, not puts his partisan interests first. We deserve that. So thats what im talking about with the patriotism check but its also really of value check. Weve got to understand there are people out there and you know what happened in parts of 2016. The Democratic Base stayed home, and we cant let that happen again. Some people voted for other people. Ee have people that wer independent and moderate republicans across the country that stayed home and voted for the people and they voted for donald trump. 31 of Iowa Companies voted for barack obama. 31 of your counties then voted for donald trump. This is what im talking about. The rancher in minnesota. This was my first glimmer of this a few years ago, and he took me on a tour of his cattle ranch on an atv and we went in and out of these big cows, and i thought, this is not how i want to die. We are going in and out, and finally, everyone leaves and the cattle ranchers leave, and im alone with him in his ranch house and he says to me, you know, we voted for donald trump. I said what you mean, the ranchers, your family . He says i dont like to say i he said we. We voted for donald trump because we were mad about health care. We went in that ballot box and thats what we did. The voter box. And he said then a while later i stood in front of that wall and that was wrong. The wall wasnt built, but he said no, the cia wall. Fallen. Of the donald trump went there and the day after the inauguration he gave an incredibly partisan speech about the size of his crowd and he did that in front of a wall of the stars of cia agents who were anonymous who lost their lives in the line of duty for our country. This guy said that was wrong and then he said, the boy scout rally. He said you know, i was a boy scout. He said donald trump gave a political speech in front of a group of young men. He did that and i can tell you first of all my husband was a boy scout. I forgot to introduce him. Standing right there. Jon is standing right there. Yes. [applause] sen. Klobuchar he was a boy scout from mankato minnesota and actually there were six brothers. He has five brothers and five of the six became eagle scouts. Yeah. I dont like to say which one didnt make it because i dont want to embarrass my husband, but he was on the debate team. Thats why. The sky, he was a boy scout, and he said when he saw trump give that speech to the boy scouts at the jamboree he said that was it. That was it are many. He said i decided for me it wasnt patriotic and that i had done the wrong thing when i went into that voting booth and voted for him. A tear went down his cheek. In New Hampshire, there was a line of people in conway, more of a rural part of New Hampshire and there were a line of people and they all had these happy little sticker. Im a Supreme Court voter, im a Climate Change voter on the reproductive rights voter, and there was a guy wearing a brown jacket. A said oh sir you dont have the sticker and he leaned forward and he says thats because i was a trump voter. These are my neighbors and they dont know so dont say anything right now. And he said you know what im not doing it again. So that is what im talking about. I do not want us to forget this and if you think these are just stories and telling i think you know people like this. There may be a few in this room and i think you know look at what has happened in louisiana where we reelected a democratic governor. Look at what happened in kentucky, where Mitch Mcconnell now has a democratic governor. Look at what happened in the state of virginia with this incredibly Diverse Group of candidates. We won in the statehouse and state senate. Have innow what they common . The night before those democratic governors were elected, guess who went down and campaigned for their opponent . Donald trump. Where can we send him next . That happened. You know when you look at those states that was a big coalition, that was a big tent. That was our fired up base but a andof republicans independents. If we can win in the state of kentucky and louisiana like doug jones won in alabama and laura in kansas, do not tell me we cant win the u. S. Senate state in the state of iowa. We can win that seat. Look at what you did. You sent abby and cindy to the u. S. Congress in the last election. Dave and soontobe rita and yes, came very close to sending steve came away from washington, away from his seat and this time, you will do it and elect. You can do that, but only if we understand that we have to bring people with us instead of shutting them out. Only if we put someone at the top of the ticket with a big tent and Wide Coalition and long gottails, and we need to not just where it is comfortable, but where it is uncomfortable. I just visited all 99 counties in the state of iowa. [applause] i was at ahar planetarium they opened especially for me in cherokee at 11 00 tonight. It was actually quite cool. We went everywhere and we had trump people with their hats and that was funny because they started saying how will you pay for child care . I said ill get to that and waited 10 minutes and i said do you know how i will pay for things . I went through everything. I said we will take the Capital Gains tax and bring that to the personal rate, bringing hundreds of billions of dollars. We will bring the Corporate Tax rate that donald trump took to the mid30s and bring it down to 21 and we get 400 billion for infrastructure. Debtn put some into the paydown. We can put some into childcare, and i went through the hedge fund loophole. That brings in 18 billion. The night ended by saying and what has your president done for the tax . He has treated you like a bunch of poker chips in one of his encrypt casinos. That is what is happening. I want us to remember that as much as people will be different, we have to answer their questions and make our case, but we have to remember as much as its an economic case it is also a value case, a patriotism case, and a decency case. And if you want to have an iowa example, it is right in your state. It is the little town of prem garr, iowa. The birthplace of one joseph welch. He was a kid of immigrants and he grew up without a lot of money and he rose to become the head lawyer, the council for the United States army. He had his calling. That was during the mccarthy hearings, when Joseph Mccarthy of wisconsin was going after people. He was going after them for their political beliefs in going after people that didnt even have a political belief that he said they had. He was getting people black listed so they could work and then he holds these hearings so the whole nation could watch him do it and so many people were afraid of taking him on. Taking himfraid of on because they thought they would lose their jobs or their friends would lose their jobs or their family would lose their jobs. There was one guy that stood up to him and that was the counsel of the United States army from prem garr, iowa, and his name was joseph welch. He stood up and he said on national tv to Joseph Mccarthy, have you no sense of decency, sir . Have you no sense of decency . Thats what this is. This election. Its a decency check and i am going to be a juror next week in this trial, and by the way, to give you an update on that there are a lot of updates and many things that are happening but to give you an update on that, we are still wrangling for good reason over how the trial is going to go. Because donald trump claims hes going to be exonerated. Why is he afraid to call all the president s men to come to testify . We are simply looking for four witnesses. His acting chief of staff, who many sources under oath said ordered the aid be withheld from this fledgling democracy of ukraine that the president called to ask for a favor to look for dirt on a political opponent. We want to hear from mr. Bolton, who had a lot of information. People testified that he told his own staff to see a lawyer after they met with the president and two people named blaire and duffy. We found out this weekend mr. Duffy had sent an email the came out on the freedom of information request that actually said potus, the president of the United States has said to hold this aid. Under his orders. Smoking gun, but we have not been able to question that witness, so that is what is going on as we tried to get a fair hearing so the American Public can have their due and listen to what these witnesses say. During that time, i will be a juror. There will be 100 juror, but you will be a juror to decide which candidate will be leading our ticket and who can best be is a verymp and that Important Role that you play. I may not be here every day. That is the reason i did 27 counties in 10 days. Three days. Three and a half days. Did seven town halls in New Hampshire, including new years eve at 5 00 p. M. And we at least , i said into them New Hampshire, come on, you can fill up those cards. Eve, you wonts remember what you did the next day anyway. We have gone everywhere because i know i will not be here as much by john will be here, my daughter will be here, these incredible surrogate in the front row will be here for me. Look at them in the front row. They will be here for me. How. [applause] while we are doing that, we will need you to do your jobs not all of them have a billion dollars we will be able to spend on political things. That is true. [laughter] sen. Klobuchar ok, so anyway. That is what i need you to do because we are not all in the same boat in this race, but our campaign is the real campaign. Our campaign is doing this the right way and when you talk to your friends, these are a few of the things i want to talk about. First of all, i have been to these states we lost in 2016, states like pennsylvania, where we lost, which was a shock to everyone. We came roaring back by winning the governorship and the senate seat in pennsylvania. Michigan, wisconsin, ive talked to gary farmers there. Iowa, when you think of the states, our plan is to build a big, blue, beautiful wall around the midwest, and we are going to make donald trump pay for it. Ok . [laughter] [applause] sen. Klobuchar thats the plan. And when you talk to your friends and neighbors, and maybe people who arent sure what the yre going to do in this thing, a lot of times we talk about donald trump is the bully, he want you to i also remember he hasnt kept his promises to people. I use the example of our world communities, but it is more than that. He said he would bring pharmaceutical costs down. He hasnt done that. He said he would deliver on infrastructure. You see levees bursting in iowa. We have not seen the work on roads, bridges, on our block and dam. Shes taking a call. It is friday afternoon. That is good, just sign a commit to caucus card. On our rural broadband, we have not seen the kind of work that we need to be done. For them, heppened has not fulfilled his promises and instead of a bully, think of it a different way. When regular people get confronted with things, when your Union Workers get confronted with itss what do they do . They have to take another job. They have to or their spouse has to take take another job. To make ends meet. What does this guy do, who came in with 413 million from his dad during the course of his career . By the way, i cannot wait to say to him on the debate stage, first of all midwest is not flyover country to me. I live here. Secondly, you have 413 million from your dad. My life started when my grandpa put money in a coffee can in the basement to send my dad through a Community College to a twoyear Community College. Grandpa worked that job and he was the oldest of nine kids. He helped raise them when his parents died and that he had to raise with my grandma, his two boys. And he said money and a coffee can. That was my family trust. And you do not fit 413 million in a coffee can. You do not do that, and when you are given opportunity from a teacher, from someone you work with, from a parent, grandparent, neighbor, you going ofthe world not with a sense entitlement. You go into the world with a sense of obligation. An obligation to lift up others horde it ford yourself. An obligation to help other people. Not slam them down. So when i talk to people, these workers out there who are working hard. What i hear from them as they think that we have to work really hard would things go wrong for us. When things go wrong for him, much of it is selfimposed because of his trade war and other things, what does he do . He blames other people. Thats what he does. He whines about it. One of my favorites he blames the head of the federal reserve. He appointed that guy. He blamed him. He blames barack obama. Thats another one of my favorites but he blames the entire city of baltimore. He does that all of the time. He blames the entire country of denmark. Who does that . That is what he does. And when he is at a nato conference and World Leaders are caught on tape making fun of him, that happens all the time. I will say in the u. S. Senate, i have seen senator see say worst things than that about senators. Even people they like. They say oh, hes doing a press conference. That is what they do. But what is this guy do, he is so thinskinned that he walks. They are still doing important things at that conference. He is our commanderinchief and he walked. American doesnt quit. We deserve better. [applause] i see janice and she knows what im talking about. Our hardworking employees at the state department. That is what she did. Our hardworking employees at the state Department Needs better than a whiner. They need better than a quitter and so does our military. They deserve better than that. The other news of this week is what happened yesterday. This is a major, major, major event. Eimani, who, by the way, was a bad guy. He killed many people. He sponsored terrorism. He ordered attacks on iraq, syria, in many places. But still, like so many of you, i have many concerns and questions about what happened here, because these repercussions, they are huge. You already have troops being sent over there. You are really even before this happened, as janice knows, they were bringing home people from the state department and halloween out our presence presence in out our iraq. It is a completely chaotic situation. It is a you know the donald trump does business. It is not thought how to. When you are thinking things out and doing things that are smart for peace, and you are putting your Country First and you are putting the lives of people around the world first. Wouldnt you talk to the leaders of the United States congress . That is what you are supposed to do. Do you know what he did instead . He didnt talk to them. It is called the gang of eight. Its the leaders, the senate and the house and the democrats and republican side, he did not talk to them. He did not see their counsel and seek their counsel and advice. Instead, do you know what he did . He talked to Lindsay Graham because they were on a golf trip together. That is what he did. So of course, our first concern is for our personnel that is over there. Americans that are over there. Aid workers that are over there. People who are over there from our own military. That is the number one concern but our second, and i just found out we will have a briefing. I demanded a briefing. We must find out what happened, we can bring our own views to bear on this situation, but the other thing we know is this is part of a pattern. Makes thesee who decisions, sometimes in his bathroom at 4 00 in the morning, in his bathrobe doing tweets. He is the one that invited the taliban to camp david, when there had been an agreement that we had long soughtafter in afghanistan that didnt happen. He precipitously removed hundred 150 troops from the border of syria allowing the turks to come in and something he knew what would happen, all of this was predicted, leaving the kurds for slaughter. The kurds, who had already lost 11000 people. Fighting by our side and then of course giving iran a bigger stronghold once again in syria. These are major decisions. Affecting people every day, and we need a commanderinchief who is going to make decisions based on good advice from the military. Good advice from people that surround her, that are not all a bunch of sycophants. That is what we have. Someone who has grace on pressure, if you saw me in the Kavanaugh Hearing [applause] sen. Klobuchar or on the debate stage, who would be able to be tough enough to make these decisions, but make decisions with the facts and make the decisions from her heart. So that is one of the main things that we have to think about here would we think about our foreign policy. But it is also about more than that. It is a positive economic agenda for this country. Something that is really eluded him. Im talking here about shared prosperity. Im talking about things like healthcare. Think of what he has done he has sabotaged the Affordable Care act. When i look at this, and i know we had a very vigorous debate if on on the stage. I look at it and say what is the best we can help people. We do come to a river, and we have a lot of lakes and rivers minnesota you know. 2000 lakes. Ive always thought that if you want to cross over the water, you build a bridge. You dont blow it up. First practical thing to keep in mind is the Affordable Care act is now 10 points more popular than the president of the United States, so we should be building on this. We should be building on this instead of blowing it up. What that means to me is of all, first making premiums less expensive with a nonprofit public option. That is what barack obama wanted to do from the very beginning. Number two. Doing something about farmer pharma prices. Pharmaceutical prices are out of control. I have led on this since i got to the u. S. Senate, and i know we can get this done. Why . Because i know where the votes are. In fact, the clover sharpsanders amendment we put forward would i about midnight, 14 republican votes. Im not sure they knew what they were voting on, but we got 14 republican votes. Sensor Grassley Presley went on to spend with me, we lost my senator grassley and he is now believed republican with me. On the belt to bring in lessexpensive drugs from other countries. And the best think that i learned, is that you dont need congress to get this done. A president can do this herself. You simply ask for a waiver and you can bring in those lessexpensive drugs. This is one of the things you can do, and i have found 137 things the president can do herself in the first 100 days without congress, and they are all legal. They are all legal. And that is how you build trust with the people because you are actually getting things done. I lead the bill to unleash the power of 300 million seniors to get better prices on medicare. There is a law that says you cant negotiate. That is in law. Medicaid can negotiate, the va can negotiate. Medicare cant negotiate. I have 34 cosponsors in the bill. As president , i can get it done. We can put a cap on tying the international average of the price of pharmaceuticals. You can put a cap on pharmaceuticals. That is a bill right now in the house. It would save 350 billion in 10 years. 350 forrs taxpayers. These are actual proposals. Nothing has happened. Thats how you build on obama care. What else do you do, addiction and Mental Health. I was the first candidate in this race to come out with a fullblown proposal for how we pay for and what we do when it comes to Mental Health and addiction. This is personal for me. Growing up, my dad struggled without college him. By the time john and i got married, he had three w. Stw eyes and at that point, the judge said you have to choose. Jail or treatment. He chose treatment. In his words, he was pursued by grace, because of his family and his treatment, and his faith, and his friends, he has been sober ever sense. I think everyone should have that same right, and that means using this money that will be coming in big time from those opioid manufacturers who we now know by email said things like to the other pharma executives, keep pumping them out. They are eating them like doritos. Talk about a smoking gun piece of evidence. We have that. Huge is going to be a settlement, kind of like tobacco and if you have a president who understands the law and how to worked in the, private sector for 14 years, we can get a settlement that goes to the people who need it and includes other forms of addiction and things like Mental Health. The end of my dads story is a good one. He is 91, still sober. We just visited him for christmas last week. He is in assisted living, his aa group visits him there. He told me about a year ago, it is hard to get a drink around here anyway. Everyone should have the same right to that story. Health, only 64 public Mental Health beds in the state of iowa. Only 64, and if we do this in a big way, we are going to be able to get funding for that, School Counselors. A School Counselor just got off work and she told me in that high school with 650 kids, she had four kids come up to her and talk about thoughts of suicide. They were all four immigrant kids. They all four had parents who worked at the plant. This is the result of bad policy by this administration when it comes to immigration, and i believe immigrants dont diminish america. They are america and we should move on comprehensive reform, but it is also about making sure we get those resources out for counseling, for Mental Health parity, for Mental Health beds. We can do this, but not with a guy in the white house. Big elephant in the room, longterm care. Either of relitigating within our own party or with donald trump Affordable Care act, we should be talking about longterm care. We are going to have a doubling of our senior population in the next few decades. I used to call it the silver tsunami, and aarp told me that was too negative, so now i call it the silver surge. Talking about people, many of whom are seniors who want to work, want to volunteer. We should make that easier. We have people with alzheimers who by 2050, 14 million americans having the most expensive disease that there is. More to shore up social security, make our pensions strong. Social security, by the way, this is an elegant solution. The payroll tax and that 133,000. You can move it up to 250,000. Even if you started a 250,000 dollars and above, you have enough money to keep it going into perpetuity. Right now by 2034, it will start paying out 10 to 15 less. We can fix that and the public would be overwhelmingly for it. Finally, longterm care. That means things like longterm Care Insurance and and my dads case, for some reason he got longterm Care Insurance. It is so good. That is helping him stay in this house with 15 people. He has about a year and then goes into savings. He didnt have much, got married for three years got married three times. Times, andied three so he doesnt have much savings, but what he has got is the longterm Care Insurance. It will kick into medicaid. To them and talked they will take him in because they dont take medicaid where he is now. Than a lots better of family stories who dont have longterm Care Insurance. I want to make it easier, and this isnt just about seniors. A lot of people out there know what it is like. They are taking care of their own kids and helping aging parents. This is really about everyone, and making sure it is easier to get longterm Care Insurance if you want to do that or easier to pay for longterm care. How would i do this . Its make it easier for people to stay in their homes that want to, lets do more with Senior Housing and housing in general, also when it comes to also, let us do something about longterm care. I got this idea from a wealthy guy in boston. He says a lot of wealthy people set up trust funds for their kids. Thats great. Even take the ones that are more than 500,000, and you start taxing not the trust fund itself, but the appreciation. That means the gain they meet each year. If you tax that, at the Capital Gains rate, which i want to make a personal rate, much closer, you bring in on taxing the longterm gains on those trust funds, you bring in over 100 billion. Billion dollars. Not million, billion. Imagine how much that would help people for their longterm care or premium. Those are the Creative Solutions im talking about here. Other challenges. I mentioned immigration reform. We can do this with comprehensive immigration reform, workforce training. We have to match our Education System with our economy. That means number one, firing betsy devos. [applause] sen. Klobuchar number two, investing in k12. In a big way, and we can do this. That is where the Capital Gains rate you pay for it that way. , number three, that means making sure we look at what are the Fastest Growing jobs in america. We are going to have over one million openings that we cant fill right now for Home Healthcare workers. So lets make sure the people of cash have childcare and retirement and things like that, so they take those jobs. We will have over 100,000 jobs for nursing assistants that require one and twoyear degrees. We will have over 170,000 opening jobs for electri cians. How we will fill them. We do not have a shortage of mbas in this country. We have a shortage of plumbers. We have a shortage of plumbers. Thats right. Someone probably trying to hire a plumber. So the idea is making sure that those degrees for the jobs we need, especially the one into one and twoyear degrees. Are free for the four year degree, you double the pell grant because that can be a sent in a public or private college. And you go from 6000 to 12000 a year and have it apply to people who make it up to 100 thousand dollars instead of just 50,000 so you are putting the money to help the people that need to help. You are not using the money to help a wealthy kids go to college. I just think that makes sense. I know it is not great on a bumper sticker, but im working that out. It is the best policy way do you get this. Climate change. Climate change. [applause] sen. Klobuchar leaving the most important think for last. That is because we got to just not make the moral argument, the environmental argument, but the environment economic argument for doing this now. This is not something we can wait a century to get out. You know why . Its not just the rising sea levels we are seeing on the coast, what is happening in florida and norfolk, virginia. It is not just a horrible wildfires that we just saw in california. It is also what we are seeing right here in iowa. We are seeing in the nation a 50 increase in homeowners insurance. That will get worse. Ask your Insurance Agents what is happening because of Climate Change. We are seeing flooding like weve never seen before. Farmers are having trouble planting or harvesting. It is affecting the economy right here. We have levees that are bursting in eastern and western iowa. It is the binoculars of a friend of mine named fran. Near the nebraska border at the pacific junction, she showed me binoculars, she showed me her house and she said thats my house. I bought it with my husband, lived there with a fouryearold. I wanted to retire in that house. Now it is covered, the first floor with water. The kitchen is covered. I love the kitchen. Its my favorite room. I love the way the light comes into the window. The house was so sturdy, it is been there through a nearly a hundred years. Theres horsehair in the plaster. I said is this the river . This raging water . Have you bought your house on the river, she said no. That is the road. The river is two and a half miles away. She said the water has not even come close to this neighborhood before. That is Climate Change. So i can tell you we can do this and we can do it the right way. We have to make sure to get the votes to do it, that the money carbong in by pricing that we will have to have the incentives to get things done, that goes back to the people. The people, including in this room. There will he have to be changes with the heating bills and things like that. We cannot do this unless we put the money back into that. Let me tell you why you set those prices in carbon. Because that is the way you are going do you get the technology, and the investment to make this happen and to reduce co2. If you dont believe me, you are gave the world norman fo laws. He saw our problem and he developed the technology and the ideas to feed a billion people in the world. That is why i see this as an opportunity. You look at wind in your state. You look at Wind Manufacturing and what the farmers can do. Whether it is planting winter crops or the like, to be part of this. This will be an all out effort. In addition to those longterm things, we can do things right away. I mentioned the international Climate Change agreement. Syria and nicaragua were the only countrys not in it. They also got in it. We are the only country that is not in it. On day one, we will get in it. On day two, we will bring back the clean power rule. That the Obama Administration had worked out over years, that everyone expected to have happened. And on day three, we will bring back the gas mileage standards that all the Car Companies have signed onto. And then trump came in and said no, you dont have to. Ford still tried to do that. They wanted to do the gas mileage standard. They were doing it california. And he threatened them with antitrust violations. That is what we are talking about when we are talking about Climate Change. So all of these things are in front of us, but none of these things can we do unless we win big. So that is my closing argument. We have to win big. You heard liz talk about how high of won in all these districts. I have won every single time in that red district that borders iowa. Not just by a little, but by a lot. I have won the Congressional District every single time that borders north and south dakota. I have one thing in northern minnesota, republican held district where the steelworkers are. And, yes, i have one the won Michele Bachmanns district every single time. [applause] sen. Klobuchar i have not done it by selling out. I have done it by looking people in the eye and telling them saying to them if you are tired of this noise and nonsense and you want to get things done, you have a home with me. That is what this is about. I just want to thank you for turning out in such a big way. This is it. We are 30 days away. I know you always like to say you are in my top three, you are my top two. Just go for it. It is the new year. [applause] it is the new year. My favorite story came right out of this town. When i met with their former mayor and she said to me after a am 78 reakfast, i with you, good news. I said that is good news, i guess, but she came around and she said that she is now 100 percent with me. You can do that soto. Thats what we want you to do but mostly, thank you for being the guardians of our democracy. I will end with the story and then take some questions. John and i were in church on Christmas Eve and we were there with our daughter, and i was as families dok, as they sit back, see the nativity play, and i was remembering when our daughter was only four and she was in that play, and she was to play the angel, and we were sitting in the pews and she would not go out to practice. I said why wont you go out there, and she said because i want to be the donkey. [laughter] sen. Klobuchar i said no no no, timmy and joey are the donkeys. The hot teenage boys in this costume. And she said well, i want to be mary. I said no, mary is 14. I said i dont understand, you have the coolest part in this whole think. You are the angel. You get to go out at the end and spread your wings. And she finally said, mom shall mom. I dont know how to tell them. I dont know how to fly. I said to her that day, you know what, honey . Not all angels fly. You are truly the angels of our democracy. Guardian angels. Maybee helping people who never have met you and maybe never will, but you are giving them the wings to fly. You get that there is a mission. As my friend john mccain would always say, there is nothing more liberating than fighting for a cause larger than yourself. This is about being the guardians, yes, of our economy, our people, our kids, but you are the guardians of our very democracy. Somehow and some way, someone has passed those wings to you. I want you to sign off with us, but most importantly, i want you to keep being involved, lead the way, and i want you to help us win this election. Thank you, everybody. [applause] ok, all right. Ok. Here we go. Weve got some questions. Ok, this is very good. This is from justine. Where are you, justine . From perry. Where did you go, justine . Feels like a song. This one. Really two questions. What is your plan to lower the cost of childcare . This is a really important thing. It is important for families, including ones right in this room. It is also important for our countrys economy. Soe iowa, minnesota, like many states, we want people to work if they want to work and for a lot of people, it is really hard to do and it is hard to do because maybe they have a sick parent or they have someone with disabilities and their family and that is why we want to be able to have that workfamily leave, but it is also hard to do because they cant afford childcare or in some areas of iowa, there isnt childcare. They are called childcare deserts. There is a good solution on the table and something my friend patty murray has worked on and i have long been on this bill and as president , i could get it done. Make the idea that if you up to 150 above the median family income, that will include a lot of people, right . If you are there with your if, you should be able you spend more than 7 of your money on childcare, you should be able to get some help over the 7 . What this will do, and theyve studied this to show how it will help. Some people will get more help when they have less money, we know that, but for a whole group of people in the middle, it is really hard for them to pay for child care, so the idea here is that once you do that, it will help people to afford childcare but more than that, it will create childcare because people will have a steadier flow of kids coming in because people will know how they can budget for childcare and you have Creative Things we can do to make Free Childcare with grants and how we will patch things together. Ive seen some incredible examples in high schools, where the city and the state and this is my own state and businesses came together to use the space in a high school and the High School Kids actually volunteer during the day. They can work their after school. They are not the only ones working there, dont worry. Or smallan example, businesses can pool their employees and resources and use one Small Business to have the childcare center, but we just have to do better. We can do this. The president , remora that whole thing, talking a big game on that . The truth is, their idea would have taken from social security. That is how they were going to do this. You were going to have people borrow against the run social security. We can do better than this and i have the exact way forward. Number two, the question was on lgbtq families, and that is a good question. We dont get it every event, so thank you. With a greatstarts example. You are one of the first states that allow for samesex marriage. That was an amazing thing, and i remember when we had the big fight in minnesota, people would say iowa has it, come on, you guys. We were able to do some incredible activism in our state to defeat a meanspirited amendment on the ballot in minnesota, and from there, the Supreme Court case and the like. Other things. The one pending issue right now for families for lgbtq is the quality act, and the simple idea right now in this country, you can get legally married in one state if you are gay and the next day, you can be fired from your job for being gay. Not every state has protections like my state has when it comes to working and for the Trans Community and the like. This is really important. It is a bill pending in congress. Other things we can do, in my first 100 days, we can do this without congress, i will lift the ban on my patriotic trans members of our society serving in the military. [applause] sen. Klobuchar that was wrong. We can stop the stigma and all those things and the bullying and go into this in a bigger way. Kindsdevos has done all of bad things in this area that we can change city by firing her. Simply by firing her. And then of course, enforcement of our hate crimes laws. We know this is not only our Lgbtq Community that have had horrid experiences with this. It is also africanamericans. It is also our jewish community, our muslim community. The rhetoric and the hate has bled into more hate crimes. Look at what just happened in a rabbis house in new york, the stabbing during a hanukkah celebration, the mosque in minnesota that was bombed. I have been involved in this since way back in my first elected office as county attorney. I made a priority out of hate crimes prosecution. The win after a guy who took a two by four and hit a guy over the head for speaking spanish. The foreman did that on that platform. And anotherd him guy who said he was going to go out and kill a black kid on Martin Luther king day. He shot him and think fully didnt kill him. We prosecuted that case. Out thel clinton rolled Matthew Shepard hate crimes bill to cover lgbtq, that horrible story of the young man found and a passerby thought he was a scarecrow on a fence post. I got invited to the white house when bill clinton wrote that without and got to meet neck you shepards family, the investigators on the case and at me last minute, they invited to introduce president clinton at the white house. For this big event, i had never been in the white house, not even a tour before. With little notice, ready to go, standing outside the door with bill clinton on one side and janet reno and eric holder, her deputy on the other, they are all really tall and i have my notes and i am ready to go into this room full of people and media, and the military band is there, and they have a very formal occasion this is all a very true story, bill clinton remembers it and they started playing and this boy says i know you are going to do great out there but when they play that song, i usually go first. That is a true story. That may have been my first visit to the white house but it will not be my last. [cheering and applause] ok. Let us say. Let us see. You sked how will grant from marion . I think so. Is that right . Ok. He asked how will you balance of the recovery of our internationals handing in parallel with the repair of the domestic damage inflicted by trump. Just a softball. Thank you. I think i just answered this one. I think first of all that we once. O do two things at i am a mom and i can do that. You will see that at my best this month. I think what you have to do is set up clear goals for your friends and enemy to make them know what youre going to do. That means the plan that i put forward i have a lot of people interested in that plane including my fellow candidates. We have that. Secondly, there are so many things you can do on your own and that you can do with congress. You lay out those things, the priorities of getting climate ,hange a distillation done economic priorities that we talked about today. Days,en, in the first 100 i committed to visiting our major allies to our north and south. I should also go and visit with our european allies. There are strong connections that president obama had made in africa that we must continue because there is a big market out there for us for trading our goods developing in africa, india. The work that we can do when it comes to asia and china, of bad actor here and they have been stealing our intellectual property and subsidizing industries. The best way to get at this is not you have heard that old saying in foreign policy, keep your threats and keep your promises and this president does neither. They have been watching this. It will be important to have clear intentions with our allies. Working with our main trading partners meaning of course canada and mexico. We are stronger as a trading block. You are right. It is going to be very important that we come out of this again as a beacon of democracy. There are a lot of people waiting through these four years of donald trump that may want to do business with us. He has basically shut them out. I think that david brooks, the columnists once said it best when he talked about barack obama. You do not know what youve got until it is gone. That sense of dignity and decency is about kids watching theirpresident on tv and parents not muting their volume. It is also about our standing in the world. We will do both things at once. Ok. Trying to go fast. On guns from barbara in cedar rapids. There you go, barbara. Thank you. I look at all of these like i think a lot of people in iowa do. Arere in two states that strong hunting states but we also believe in people safety. Dick ins hurt my uncle the deer stand . They do not hurt my uncle in the deer stand. I have made this point to the president of the United States because i sat across from him after parkland and made the case for universal background checks and hes said nine times, i have the piece of paper with the hash marks. He made those promises. There is a video. He said we will do that and we will quote the boyfriend loophole. That is still out there which i will talk about that in a minute. And the next day he met with the nra and he folded. Law enforcement, we tried to get the assault weapon ban preauthorized. The Police Chiefs could not get it done. I got to the senate and i saw those parents after sandy hook and they were simply trying to do some really important things. They were trying to make sure that we passed universal background checks and they were unable to do it. They were unable to do it because the senate did not have the courage to get it down. And i remember having one of the moms in my office and she said you know, my son was in that school and he was autistic. The last day when i kissed him goodbye, he could not speak but he pointed to the picture of his assistant on the refrigerator. Fire station and one by one, the kids came back and soon she knew she would never see her little boy again. She is sobbing. She knew about that school aid and new that she would never leave his side. When they found them, the teacher is a had her arms around her little boy. This would save lives because it is the number one thing to do with suicides and domestic, size. But the senate did not have the courage to get it down. And then what happened . Parkland. Kids all across the country especially boy started talking to their dadss and grandpas and said we love hunting also. Things shifted. One of those kids voted bigtime in the midterm elections. When their parents voted, they had a different mindset. Why use and people like abby and cindy to congress. Democracy in action. We passed universal background checks. We passed closing the charleston loophole and we passed my bill that said people that are convicted of Domestic Abuse cannot go out and get an ak47. That bill passed with republican support. What is happening now . Those bills are sitting where . On Mitch Mcconnells desk along with 400 other bills leading me back to the beginning of our whole argument. That we need to win big because if we want to get these things done, and dont tell me that we cannot do it. You did it here. We did it in our neighbors in wisconsin where someone had a Green Bay Packers shirt. Very hard for me. Very hard for me. They did it with watcher words four words, former Governor Scott walker. Big. N only do it if we win i ask for your support. We are going to win this and get it to him but only with you by my side. Thank you, everyone. Lets go. Lets win. Yet this done. Thank you. Thank you, cedar rapids. [applause] thank you. Thank you so much. We are going to do a photo line here in the corner if you could line up against this wall. The senator does have a flight to catch so we appreciate your cooperation today. We will come down to you. Thanks.
