Congress and then we will begin the second session. Followed by live coverage on cspan. For a discussion on minimum age laws, we are joined by staff attorney from the National Employment law project. Remind us what this act does. We are a nonprofit organization, nonpolitical organization, and we focus on the rights and needs of lowwage workers around the country. Is a specifically minimum wage . We address all kinds of daft, minimum wage, wage standards, independent contracted issues, all kinds of things that lowwage workers face. 24 states will have raised their and him wage laws by the end of this year. There is a Record Number in terms of states doing that. Why is that doing why is that happening now . I think there is a historic number of increases because we have seen many fights for higher wages paid workers came out on strike back in november of 2012 taking the case for why the current wage was not enough. I think the argument continues to resonate with more and more workers good it is becoming harder for workers to afford to live on lower wages. Host are any of the states that are raising their wages close to that number . In new york at the state passed a statewide law that is being phased in gradually. New york city will be the first part of the state to reach 15 this year. They just got to 15. California and other states are moving up to 15 as well and we e also had statesually a number of are making headway. Why 15 an hour. I think this number helps them be sufficient and really get and not from working to support themselves and their families, so 50 an hour is about 30,000 a year, and that is what we are seeing now will be about enough for a single worker in most parts of the country to make ends meet. When youre talking about workers with families, you need even more, so 15 is the starting point and it is a number that i think now has garnered a large amount of consensus. Host if you want to find them ine, you can go ahead and start calling in and we will be having a conversation until about eight. As folks are calling in, that races that we are talking about, they vary pretty widely this year. Everything from florida raising 8. 46 an hourrom to Washington State raising it and . 50 an hour. When it comes to what the right state, wages is for a how is that determined . Its really up to the folks in the states to push for a wage level that makes it sense for them. We see an incredible high cost of living in some parts of the country. D. C. Is one of those places with a very high cost of living. Alks have pushed and one for 15 minimum wage. In many ways it is up to folks in those states, but its important to note that we need a better baseline for everybody. Right now we have 21 states that are stuck at the federal level. That is about 15,000 a year and simply not enough for anybody to make ends meet. We need a higher baseline. Now to live coverage of the house.
