All right. Lets get started. Hi, everybody. What a nice group of ladies to see all together. This is fantastic. Well, thank you so much for being here. And i know we have a lot of questions for you. So i want to get started. First, i have to start by asking you about the topic everybody in d. C. Is talking about, impeachment. Ok. As everyone knows president thep has decided to sit out house judiciaryy judiciary committees and i wonder why he decided that . As an american, im slightly ashamed to see the process we have played out in washington, d. C. The reality is this is based on the fact that i think very clearly the democrats seem a little scared to run against donald trump. Since he was inaugurated in 2017, the Washington Post immediately put out a story about impeaching donald trump. This is something that started way back went when. First we had the allegations of russia collusion, which two years later, the Mueller Report came out,30 million taxpayer dollars and we thought there was no collusion with russia on behalf of the president and our campaign. So now theyve switched the focus. Oh, there was a phone call with ukraine. There was no quid pro quo. The only way to get this president out of the white house is to try to impeachment. Hes bane forded no due process. So why should he go along with this process . Its clear he has a lot to say. He does have a lot to say. He can say his part of the story. Yeah, but the bottom line here is the people who will ultimately judge him will be the voters as we approach november 3rd of 2020. If you dont like the president , thats your time to vote him out of office. It should not be done based on impeachment. I think the American Public is so exhausted with this. Weve gone through this since he was elected president. Again, first starting russian collusion. Now were here with the ukraine situation. I think most people are tired of it. Most people would prefer congress to do their job. Moving things forward. We i jutches heard before i came over here there was somemoment great. I think people are getting really tired of it. Their purpose would be better served on that one to do Better Things for the country. When youre out traveling the country as you do, what are you hearing from voters . And what are you saying to voters when they criticize the president for stone walling, thats the word thats been used, democrats . Lara i generally dont hear that sentiment because i go on an airport or an airplane. My home state of South Carolina i get such positive messages from people. I cant tell you the number of pilots and flight attendants who write tell him to keep fighting. Many more than even in 2016. You to remember donald trump was an unknown in the political sphere. We all knew who donald trump was. He was a businessman. He obviously was on the apprentice and a television personality. But i think a lot of people questioned how would he be as president. Now, you see the fact that over 7 million jobs have been created. 500,000 manufacturing jobs that our previous president said would never come back have come back from overseas. We have the lowest unemployment in the history of the country. Those things matter. But unfortunately, the environment has gotten very hostile. People are scared oftentimes to support this president out wardly. But they tell me about it. And they come up to me. Those are the things that i generally here when im out across the country. President trump that impeachment is going to be stain on his legacy. He said how hard its been on his family. You think it can actually benefit him. Do you think it will help him win the election . I think when people see what is going on here, and i think people are so exhausted by this entire process. It really feels like the democrats are not willing to say donald trump is a legitimate president , that they want to redo the 2016 election and take peoples votes away. Thats what impeachment is. It removes the president from office. I think it really infuriates people out there whenever they feel that this is a president that is finally speaking their land. Doing the things, that so many president s before promised to do like moving the the embassy to israel. Thats something every president promised they would do. Leveling the travel field. I think were going to see something coming up with china soon. We see that usnca, hopefully question get it past. But really, i think that people as a whole find it offensive that voted for donald trump that this process is playing out. They dont believe he needs to be impeached. They dont see anything wrong with the phone call that spurred this whole impeachment inquiry. For people who decided or thought about it for a second maybe im not going to vote for the president and im not going to encourage people to do it, theyre still irritated by the process, theyre coming out to vote for him. Theyre telling friends and family to vote for him. I have heard people tell me all the time, i didnt vote for donald trump in 2016. And im so mad about what theyre trying to do to him that everyone i know is voting for him. I think it can be beneficial in a way because it really encourages people, you know what, theyre trying to take your vote away. Youve got to get out and vote for him in 2020. Now, i now, i have to ask you something. A poll showed that you are the eading republican to replace him. I am not running for congress. I am totally dedicated right now to making sure the president is reelected in 2020. I would say, listen, you cant rule anything out. You never know what could happen. I dont live in that district. But im truly honored that anyone would consider me. I was sort of shocked. And a reporter said could you comment on the poll about you running for congress . Im sorry, im not sure at whall youre talking about. That was a really nice thing to hear. Im currently not running for congress. It doesnt sound like youre ruling something down the road though. I think we need a good decompression from politics. But never say never. Obviously, youre working on the president s campaign. And youve been working try to attract more women to President Trumps campaign. I wonder if you could tell us a couple of ways youre doing that. In 2016, the way i got involved in the president s campaign i mean it was sort of you know, grassroots, i guess you would say. I worked for inside edition for years. I flew to see my fatherinlaw. One thing led to another and its such a donald trump thing to do. But at the owned of that trip he said im going to put you in charge of winning north carolina. Not a big deal, right . Huge deal. I was freaking out. But i of course said, i would love to do that. I put together a group of women. We got a bus and we were shocked by the people who came out to see us. Were replicating that now but in a much bigger fashion. We have our women for Trump Coalition that we launched back in the summer. Really the way we are encouraging women by talking to their friends by talking to their Family Members, to the parents at their kids school hosting events. Ill talk about supporting the president and getting out there and talking about the fact that they support the community. A lot of people are very nervous to support the president. Thats what were doing. Obviously with the campaign is to talk about the chings that have been accomplished in this country. Whether youre a man or a woman, the results speak to themselves, even million jobs created, half of those went to in this country under this president. Those sorts of things we have to get out there and remind people as we approach 2020. Women overwhelmingly voted for democrats in 2016 and 2018. Im wondering and actually i was going to mention we have a recent nool showed the Approval Rating with swim a Morning Consult politico poll was at 34 . What does he need to do . Does he need to stop talking about hot button issues like immigration and gun rights and talk about other issues . I think at the end of the day, listen, polls have never really fully reflected peoples opinion on this president. Ost of the polling showed that the next president would have been hillary clinton. And it was donald trump. The way we measure things in the campaign and a better barometer was fundraising. About 25 of our fundraising came from women. Now in 2019, we are seeing that about 50 is coming from women. While they may not be talking to a polster, they are donating to this campaign. B how about the white suburban women . Thats part of our women for Trump Coalition. Were encouraging women if you live in a small city or a big tony town to talk to people and to support this president and talk about the accomplishments. People resident just read the headlines. Most of our Media Coverage has been negative since the day he was elected president. If youre only getting that information you talk to somebody that you know youre similar with and theyre like do you know about this, this or this . I think were making some head ways are. I know youre busy on the democratic side we have a big fight going on for the nomination. Amy klobachar said that male and female president ial candidates are treated differently. And i was wondering today in 2019 if you think women candidates are treated differently . I mean, for my view, no. I think that listen, weve all been able to see the debates. And everyone gets their appropriate spot on stage and equal amount of time to speak. They have just as much opportunity as anyone to get out there and campaign and be on television and get their message out there. Im not sure, you know, exactly what she meant by that, to be honest with you. But from my spers speckity and the way that i can see it, i would say its been a pretty fair process. Ok. Now i wanted to turn the top toik something thats very important to moment im a board member of the white house corns association. So im fighting for access for the media every day. You studied communications in college. You briefly worked at a news station in north carolina. And then you mentioned inside edition. President trump as you know has mentioned several times that the media is the enemy of the people. I wonder if you agree with that statement . Think its for the American People to decide. If you look at this Overall Coverage of this president and f you look at the fact that 96 of his Media Coverage has been negative. Think about trying to do your job when 896 is negative about you. It feels that people are constantly attack you. It does become worrisome when the media instead of reporting the news is dictating the news as they want you to see it. And i think that has been his main problem since day one. Sort of sounds like you agree then . Well, i wouldnt say that i agree or disagree. Its up to the American People to decide. But for me it does get frustrating as not only as Senior Advisor to the company but as a Family Member to see the constant negative against him. Its just it never stops. And were all very used to it now. It happens to all of us too. But i think it becomes a little worrisome whenever it feels like the media instead of just reporting what they are witnessing out there is kind of spewing things and presenting things in a way that they think would angle peoples minds in a certain direction. Ok. I wanted to talk to you about something that most people may not know that, that youre interested in animal rescue. Yes. The president signed an animal cruelty bill. I wonder if you could tell us what role you played in getting that bill signed . Im a Family Member to the p. Im not part of the administration. Hes known me and our entire family knows as the crazy animal lady. Proud to have that moniker. Whenever i first learned act the pact act and this makes animal cruelty a crime. I think many people were shocked that that was not implemented already. I had been coaxing my fatherinlaw saying listen, this is something that would be great. And blind the scenes talking to him, talking to republican congressional members saying this is snag we should support and champion. So just in that capacity, i really helped i think hopefully get him onboard with this and maybe push some people who otherwise wouldnt have considered it. I didnt realize it. So you went to capitol hill . Yes. How many members of congress did you say you would talk to . Yes. I want everybody onboard for the animals. We can all agree on that, at least. How many people would you say you talked to . Oh, my gosh. I started two and a half years ago. I couldnt tell you. I didnt realize you were the crazy animal lady. How many animal doss you have . I have two dogs and i would have 50 if our apartment would allow it. So whenever we move to a different location perhaps youll see me with a multitude and a menajory of animals. So were going to get to the lightning round. Im going to ask you a few questions. Limit yourself to a couple of words if you could. Whats a question you wish you could ask at next weeks democratic debate . Oh, my gosh. The lightning round has started. How about something along the lines of what do you feel should be done to benefit animals in this country . Since were talk about the animals. Ok. I havent heard the one yet. Whats one thing President Trump has made you said to make you cringe . [laughter] im trying to think of one. You know what, i wont tell you the name that he suggested. Hell know what it is if he sees this. But he suggested a name for our daughter that i dont think our daughter and i youve got to tell us the name. Needless to say our daughters name is caroline and with the go name he suggested to me. Ill keep that private. Maybe another time. Name another female lawmaker that you admire . You have to admire nancy pelosi. Shes been in the game for a long time. I know shes coming to speak here. She shes trying to remove your fatherinlaw from office but she has tenacity. She certainly is willing to to put down and throw down whenever she she needs to. Whether or not i agree with it, thats a different story. But you certainly can admire somebody for spending their life, you know, here in washington, d. C. And trying to serve the country. Ok. Youve spent a lot of time obviously with President Trump. What is something that would surprise us that we dont know . He doesnt always get two scoops of ice cream. I know thats shocking to a lot of people. Listen, hes such a kind hearted person. I know that most people who just get the information out there daytoday from the Mainstream Media find that hard to believe. But i can tell you, i grew up in a very small town in north carolina. I come from a middleclass family. And whenever i first met donald trump, well before he decided to run for president , he made me feel so comfortable. And welcomed me with open arms. And wanted to know about me and learn about me. Its like meeting anyone elses dad. Now the name trump added to the extra nerves when you meet your possible and future inlaw. I just know the way hes made me feel and the way he treated me. I only wish other people could see that side of him. Well, were almost out of time. I wanted to ask you one other thing. Youre a mother of two young children. Im mother myself. I know i talk to parents and im sure you do too about how much we should tell our children about whats going on in the country today. Things are so divisive these last few years. I wonder when your children get old enough what, do you want them to understand about the role that you played in Politics Today . I i just want my kids to know that i fight for something i believe it. When you believe it and, you know, the personal personally, its always the right thing to do to fight for that and to fight for what you believe in, no matter what it is. So i hope that they one day know that. And will learn that about me. I think that theyll theyll learn very quickly, that im not putting up with any nonsense from them. I have a 2yearold and a. A 3 month old. Standing up for what you believe in is probably the most important thing. Thank you for coming. Thank you. [applause] [captioning performed by national captioning institute] [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2019] please welcome to the stage, anchor of fox news outnumbered overtime and cohost of outnumbered harris faulkner. [applause] wow. You guys are beautiful. Wait until you see my panel. All right. Im harris. Lets do this. [applause] were going to talk about choice, Lessons Learned from the ones weve made to the hard ones weve yet to make and the growth weve experienced from choosing one path or another. And remember there will always be ricks, heartbreak, transitions between old and new. Competition can be fierce. And even wild, unimaged success. How you handle it determines how far you will rise. Meet the panel. Tammy wincup president of protocol. [applause] chief officer of determinealogica. We were all talk about our skin care. And karen fullman, president of clear. And senator Tammy Duckworth. Democratic senator from illinois. [applause] all right. So i do a little bit of tv. And my producers say that i turn a blind eye to a clock. Well, i cant do that today. Weve got a little less than three minutes. And were going to rock it. I just ask if you havent already to put your cell phones on silent. Im going to go to my right with tammy to get us started with your definition of success. And one powerful step you took when you embarked on your journey. Tammy you know, i think that everyone defines success clearly differently. I think for for me, i am a company builder. And so this is protocol with a new Media Venture focused on the people, politics and powering technology. This is my fourth venture. And i think the idea of success in my career has been the ability to tell my own story that has em come passed both Early Stage Companies and also large organizations. But the ability to weave the risk and weave in between those in addition to marriage and three children and all of that. Success to me has been defined by being focused on the mission of the organizations that youre focused in, number one. And number two, its defining your success in each one of those but recognizing that your only one not defined of those. Success is telling your own story. Senator duckworth is there a moment that you would like to share along your journey that said, wow, this is big. But ive got this. How would you define success . Senator i think the ability to set the parameters for how i interact in the workplace with my colleagues. You know, having been in the military for a long time, youre in a very hierarchical system. So you follow orders and all that. When i got to the point whereas a congresswoman, i set the standards. For example, i decided to put in i weeks family leave and including to men, adoption and to care for a Family Member. I expanded it to 16, to me being able to set the parameter first the conditions that i was working in and for those working around me was like my first oh, wow. Ok. Its one thin to get put into office elected into office but its another to see changing things. When i could do that was when i really felt, ok. This is what success is. Now, im in charge. Now, i can make these changes. Harris wow. The room gets so quiet when you guys talk. Its amazing. Jane yes. Harris i have used your skin products when i was 19. I was still at u. C. Santa barbara. You guyed hat story in marina del ray they would drive down to the weekend. You probably remember that. Not me. [laughter] i know a bit of your journey. That was it was my beginning. What is success to you . And was there a moment, a point of personal power where you feel, ok, ive embarked, lets go . Yes. Success to me is selfdetermination. When you the ability to make your own choices and lead your own life and be fully authentic to who you are. And for me, the defining moment was learning how to do something. I went to study through vocational training. My mom was a nurse. She was age 38 with four girls to raise. She told us to get a skill set. I could do a bikini wax in seven minutes, that was my defining moment. Knew i had a highly sailable skill. I emigrated to the United States. Selffunded on 14,000. And grew it to the largest Skin Care Company in the industry. So thank you, u. S. A. [applause] now, i know i couldnt get an appointment. I would have to make it weeks in advance. I was reading when you were looking, you and your partners were purchasing clear, there might not have been some people thought that would work out. So what is success to you . And was there that powerful personal moment where we said, ok, here we go . So success to me is living a full life. I dont believe in work life balance. When youre in college no one said college, party, balance or school, whatever. It was youre a student. Youre at college. So i love living a frenetic life and being a change maker on my terms. Im a nonconformist, right . And so that led us to buying clear out of bankruptcy. I just really i love chaos. I love chaos and then complaining about it or else im bored. Along those lines there have been moments where i have three kids. When my middle daughter gave a marketing presentation and how we derived it from the d. N. A. Helix. And the other side is when i went to a caller and said they were the First Company to come and visit them. And my view is youre our team member, of course, we could that. Or going to l. A. And visiting the clear team there. Waun of our team members who is an incredible clear team member who said he used to be homeless and clear has changed his life. And so that whole spectrum to know you can be an impact player in your way is so powerful and empowering. Harris thank you, all thats a good play to begin. We get to know you. Some more than others with your sevenminute skill. [laughter] were all going to be think about it. Its important to know what you can do. I want to kind of dig in now and really focus on some particular moments for each of you. Senator duckworth you you were pursuing a ph. D. When your National Guard unit was sent to iraq. You had to make a pivot that you werent really planning on. How did you navigate it . Senator duckworth i was a soldier and it was my duty to go. I didnt agree with the war in iraq. I wanted to go to afghanistan and go find and kill people who attacked us on 9 11. But i also felt that iraq had nothing do with 9 11. And iraq was the vanity mission of president bush and dick chaney. But this nation elected that president. And he made a lawful order and the United States congress voted on it. And as a soldier and still to this day feel that the military is subservient. Thats the way our constitution works. So i was proud to go. The Decision Point for me wasnt so much leaving my studies to go to serve in iraq. The Decision Point was volunteering to go because i was not in the group of people who was selected to go. My boss said dont let me be the entire pie wlot is standing on the sideline while my unit goes. Please take me in whatever caps timent i was lucky that they needed every pilot. So i got to go. That was the Decision Point for me. I fought in a war i didnt believe in because i believed in our constitution. And thats where my beauty lay. Arris chn how did you navigate harris how did you navigate [applause] and i love i love what you say about work life, balance. If im really onest about it i just have monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday. And somewhere in the mix i get a little me time. It is what it is. How did you navigate, senator, what your dreams are versus, you didnt know how long you would be gone . Its a war. Its not like youre given an end date. I went off to war knowing one of two things would happen. I was going to come home fine at my 18month tour of duty or i was going to be killed. All soldiers know that. But i was never prepared to come home wounded. My job was to keep my guys alive. I was a system operations officer. It was my job to actually structure and assign the mission. So i knew if somebody was an in an aircraft, it was my mission to put them there. It was my mission to make them as safe as possible. I put my head down and i worked. Thats what most of our troops. Do it makes it harder for them because theyre so focused on that, because theres no real transition. Youre back in the states, and the rest of the country, right now for example is shopping for christmas. And you just came from a war zone. We industrial guys in the war zone right now. This is why youre getting to see a lot of the post traumatic stress, a lot of suicide because it is such a break when you come home. I was fortunate that i was wounded because i spent 13 months in the hospital transitions. Im more worried about the soldiers who have a nine hour transition. It is never enough, the daughter of a colonel, thank you. [applause] sharon, you went from working as a Hedge Fund Manager to working in biometrics and security. What do you credit with your ability to make the career leap . Sharon no fear of failure, first of all. Buying a bankrupt company, right . Cant get a lot worst than that. And the other part is meaning. I ran a hedge fund. I dont want to buy and people say, i bought good stock. 9 11 changed my life. I was 29 at the time. I thought this is our challenge of our generation. How do you make sure that doesnt happen again . Buying clear, biometrics hs, people, delights people, that felt great. And building that against all odds. So i always come from the stock market. People would shorting things. People thought i was short them. Huh. People wake up with a mission. Thats living a whole life of meaning. Harris i capture from you, no fear. Youll only have regrets if you give into it. Whats the worst thing that can happen . Theyre going to write a mean article about you . Harris or tweet. Im just saying. So im going to pick some of these. I know they got to talk with some of the attendants here. So i have an aggregate of questions that came from the audience. So theyre not a oneonone match. If i read this and i go thats my question. Maybe i will. And maybe they lied to me. But im going to pick one out of the blue here. Many women in the audience may want to be ready to evolve their careers. But theyre batting imposter syndrome or selfdoubt. Whats one small action they can take today to overcome that . I think first is the realization that everyone in the room is doing that. Often you look at yourself and think im the only one who doesnt necessarily know something or what im doing. The reality is theres some piece to recognizing that everyone to a certain degree and to give each other credit with the idea that like everyone brings to the table their own fierce about where they are in their career and in their story. I think for me, the ability and some of what karen said is the so what. I have found a career where i thrive in the companybuilding stage and kind of making something out of nothing. And to me theres something invigorating about that because a lot of people look at that that stage of Company Building and say its really risky. You know, youre not sure if youre going to make it. I think that ability to say well, why not . Right . And to have optimism to be able to do that has been a huge piece to counter the imposter syndrome. My general feeling is there are a lot of people in this room and in the country and around the world that actually are making it until they make it. And candidly a lot of guys that have embraced that from the beginning from my spers peck speculative is why am i not doing that as well . Why am i not starting from that perspective vs. The perspective i have imposter syndrome. Harris if youll allow me, i want to add something to this. Y oldest daughter is 13 and in hopes that shell listen to me, this is one of them. I think you need a small group of believers. You do. Harris and its what i called calder special forces. Who, when you feel like an imposter, they convince you that you are real and you may have to fake it till you make it. Your mother my mother used to say, youre always smiling. I know you are not that happy. I found at an early age that the world is falling apart, but look at these molars. [laughter] i do think it opened a lot of doors that really were nailed shut to me, particularly as a person of color. That ability to have opened my eyes through smiles make a difference. I needed people around me who were doing great things in our young lives to believe in me. The piece i would add to that is choosing that special forces wisely i think is huge. I think the one piece that i would say, just very tactically, when you are choosing what you have defined as your special forces, its the people who are going to take risks you in your career. Im a fundamental believer that the biggest decision you make as a woman in your own career, is,ver your life partner regardless of pronouns. To me, that is something that we dont talk about. People didnt talk to me about that in my career. Its been a huge Multiplier Effect to have somebody in your corner that also understands who you are personally. Often thats not said as career advice. Become jane, you have one of the most influential figures in skincare globally. The logica incident deerm is one of the largest companies. How did you manage to hold the vision while starting out small . Whats this interesting idea is of great believers, having people in your warner. When i started an educated. Enter in your corner when i started an education center, there were my dream believers, my supporters. The training was very minimal. It was fulltime training in the u. K. And europe. This was empowering their careers, teaching skills they could become successful with. That became the call core of dermalogica. I believe when you have selfdetermination as an entrepreneur, you now have an opportunity to control your own our joyection, but also was we were working with entrepreneurs. Each of those small, local entrepreneurs build our business built our business. We do have great products, but there were great products out there. The piece of the thread that goes through my whole career is this local entrepreneur who believed in something and stood behind and with it and empowered everything that we did. Now we have we have found l. A. Thats the long tail of job creation. Thats the piece, especially women and minorities and immigrants, that dont get funded or seen or found. Or we need to support them we will all be living next door to the big box store. Harris i want to ask for a show of hands quickly. How many of you are in the spirit and you want to do something on your own with the business . Just raise your hand. [applause] i love that. You may as well really do it. Duckworth, this is always one of those questions thats like a life balance question. We are aten rule the women rule summit. Im curious to know from you, particularly from that hierarchical background in the military and now, i think there were 112 women in congress now. Its not like half or anything. I know half the audience around the country is also watching, looking like me. How being a woman played a role in terms of challenges, how you best open. Oors that are sometimes shut sen. Duckworth in politics, we certainly do not have 50 representation of women in the house and senate combined and we need to get there. Its been interesting because just getting into the house and getting into the senate was tough. Getting voters to dutch male voters to vote for a woman is getting male voters to vote for a woman is tough. You have to find who you are and bring that forward. Once you bring for that addict self of who you are that authentic self of who you are, voters will vote for you. For me, it was because of my military service. They would listen to me and allow me through the door based on my military service. Then i would hit them with everything else. You have to find a way to connect with folks. Thats changed me over time. When i first ran, it was mostly military service. ,ow that ive been in office when i talked to voters, they see me as who i am. Thats a transition that ive made. I continued to get through the door. In the very beginning, i ran because i was asked to. I said yes. A woman on average seven times of being asked to run for office before she says yes. Men all the time invite themselves to run even though nobody wants them to. Race, most women do what i do, lock myself in my bathroom and cry for three days, whereas men get up the next day and look in the mirror, the voters are wrong, they will be ready for me the next time. A lot of this is opening the door yourself. You may get an invitation, and thats great, but opportunity doesnt always knock. Sometimes you have to run out and grab it. Its not connection. You have to be willing to be your best person. It goes back to this imposter syndrome. No one is more surprised than me when i look in the mirror, holy crap, im a United States senator, how did this happen. Harris are we surprised . Sen. Duckworth now that ive got the job, im going to go do the job. A little bit of that is good. It keeps you humble, keeps you working hard, if you striving keeps you striving. The day you stop serving the people is when you rest on your laurels. Maybe its good to keep that going. For me, its having dick durbin and barack obama say, Tammy Duckworth, you need to run for office. I kept bugging them about the fact that veterans work getting very Good Health Care were not getting very Good Health Care. Dick durbin looked at me as a Wounded Warrior in a wheelchair. He didnt see somebody to be pitied. He didnt see someone who no longer had abilities. He looked at me and saw potential and acknowledged that potential, said, i think you should run, but that i then i had to say yes. Most women will say no seven times before they decide to run. If more women would actually say yes in the beginning or just motivate themselves to get out there, we would be much further along to 50 representation. It should be 51 , because there are more women than men in this country, in the halls of power, so we can change the laws of this country to reflect those values that are important to all of us. Harris i took notes while you were speaking. Me, too. Yes. S get to thats what i got from senator Tammy Duckworth today. You know what i got from you . Authenticity. People knew who you were and they know who you are, and because there is no inconsistency there, it sounds like it really opened doors for you. People recognize the package when they see it. They dont want to see the package. They want to see you. Sen. Duckworth if i can be and theall the good bad, i connect better with people. You will see College Students who are very dust see politicians who you will see politicians who are very packaged. Whether you were are a se nator, you are a person. You dont want to be seen as the senator, the ceo. You want to be seen as the person you are and what you are bringing to the table. You cant get people to follow you with your title. Sen. Duckworth im putting my harris im putting my cards down, because now its a real conversation, not that it wasnt before. Age, andn of a certain im enjoying a little aarp discount these days, which you can get a 45, but its better when you are over 50 get at 45, but its better when you are over 50. What i know from reality, though, when you do the thing of being a real person on the job and leaving with your passion and heart, we are discounted leading with your passion and your heart, we are discounted because we are seen as emotional. Its taken a while that my leading emotion that men should know is, id like to replace you. [applause] i dont think its emotion. I think its passion. Im not yelling. Im speaking fervently. Im flailing. We all want to be monotone. Do we all want to be boring and the same . You want passion and excitement. And equitable and transparent and authentic. People dont want boring. You want to bring it big. Bring your whole, big, messy self. If your emotional, fine. If youre emotional, fine. One of my favorite, wilde, be yourself. Everyone else is taken. Bring it all. Especially if you are thinking of starting your own business and being an entrepreneur. Look at Michael Bloomberg jeff bezos, steve jobs. Look where they started look at mike bloomberg, jeff bezos, steve jobs. Look where they started. Imposter. Michael bloomberg had an idea for a terminal. Steve jobs studied calligraphy. Watch these guys journeys. Watch what they built and how they built it. When people said to me, you dont have any experience, im sorry, what was jeffs experience . Whats not cookiecutter youre looking for that will make you successful whats that cookiecutter youre looking for that will make you successful . One of the most successful cookie cutters ended up in prison. Wow. Its true. You have to get to a point where you are able to say its not going to be linear. Very early on, i know i was, youre nervous to come into that room and be truly authentic and bring your whole self. I certainly believed that it was going to be linear. Ive been in four different industries, all within tech. Like you, caryn, if somebody wouldve said, that doesnt translate your point about jeff and others, why doesnt it translate . Once you capture the belief that its not going to be linear, you are not going to make one move after another, and you have to weave that story, you are the one who has to tell how its all connected, then you suddenly feel like you can be authentic in that room. And dont sell your skills or yourself short. I made a joke, and its not really a joke. Sometimes you cling onto a small thing and it gives you a lot of confidence. Jobf you come in for a opportunity and maybe you have lets work experience, say you were a single mom, you have a lot of skills you can bring to the workforce. If you can get four kids up in the morning to go to school, you are a great organizer. [applause] bring it, bring it. Dont sell yourself short in your own mind. Thats a huge achievement. Just own it. We cant trivialize that. Sen. Duckworth can i build on that with two examples in politics . Most women who get into politics get in it nonlinearly. They were doing Something Else and they got pissed off about something. One of my personal heroes, congresswoman from illinois, 30 something years ago, was at home raising her kids, trying to buy bread. She kept getting stale bread and milk that would sour within a couple days. Man, i just want to know when this stuff is fresh. He started a campaign to put she started a campaign to put sell by dates on food. She was mad because she was wasting a lot of her budget money, because she was a housewife. Then she got asked to run for congress. Shes been a congresswoman for over 30 years. Who better to take on donald trump than someone who is a mom and her kids graduated and then decided to run for office than Speaker Pelosi . She has skills. Five kids. Harris we have run the clock out, but i have one more question. Can i ask . Im going to ask the audience for permission. We will ask for forgiveness later. I want to go to each of you for a final thought on what needs to be next for women to feel empowered, whether its creating their own businesses or moving up the corporate ladder. What needs to be our next step . Risk. Hink how we accept i think the ability to kind of think about yourself and your risk tolerance and push that will allow us to say yes, not at seven times, but three. Whatever youre trying to accept. I think thats where each person has to look and say, whats truly risky and how do i be an optimist about it. Jane i want to give a call to action. I want you to support your local entrepreneurs, especially the women, because we get no funding. [applause] most of your local entrepreneurs are selffunded on about money 7,000 on three credit cards on three credit cards. Our neighborhoods connect us face to face. Go in. Be that change. Come in and meet your neighborhood entrepreneurs. Welcome them, buy from them, me et them, find them, and share what you found. Lets really make sure that we are building strong neighborhoods and human connections that we want to live with every single day. Caryn i saw shimon peres speak. He said, optimists and pessimists die the same way, but they live very different lives. That, as well as my grandfather saying, pull yourself up on your bootstraps. You better come up with a solution and push forward. Thats the only way to do it. Sounds a little harsh, but its real. Harris harsh is great if its true. Senator . Sen. Duckworth getting out of our own way and teaching our kids, especially our daughters, to get out of their own way. When i got to flight school, i was one of only two women for that entire year. There was another woman in another class. Instructors would come to us, do you know any women who would apply to flight school, any other female soldiers that you know, because women make better natural pilots, but nobody applies. Women in the military are just not applying. They dont think of themselves as becoming pilots. Im really scared because my daughter in this last couple weeks, just turned five, and she started to say things like, oh, thats a boy color, thats a boy game. And shes five years old. Where did she learn that . Sen. Duckworth shes not learning it from me. [laughter] oh, ill putike, her in something, oh, thats a boy color. Whatever color you want is your color. We have to start young and be consistent. If she is starting that now, how long before she starts to say thats a boy job or skill or subject . And seeing it firsthand is really im scared that this is this is what she is getting. Lets all, in helping ourselves and each other, also try to mentor young girls. It starts as young as five. I can only imagine what it will be like when she is in eighth grade, the messages she is going to receive. Harris ladies, you are all rock stars and we are better having gotten to know you today. Tammy, jane, caryn, and senator duckworth, thank you very much. [applause] and thank you to our fabulous audience. Next step, make sure you meet people, audition people to be on your special forces, to believe in you. Have a great day.
