[cheering] mayor buttigieg thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. What a wonderful welcome. You always make me feel right at home here in iowa. Thank you coming out in joining us tonight. And lets hear it one more time for representative barry. So honored to have your support and thank you for your leadership in the state. I am thrilled to be with you. It has been a great day back on the trail. We took a beat. Had a lot of not quite so healthy food over the last few days. Buddy got a christmas present. Our rescue puggle. My fatherinlaw made a step ladder for him to get on to the bed, because he does not have the vertical leap to make it on his own. If we dont put him on the bed, he will cry all night. Anyway, we had a great christmas holiday. I am so thrilled in the middle of the holidays and some interesting Football Games on television, youre all spending that is all i will say about football this evening, i promise. So glad to be here with you. Really coming together to discuss the future of our country. And the role that iowa is going to play in 37 short days in deciding the trajectory of the nomination, and therefore, the republic and, therefore, the world. No pressure. I can tell how seriously iowans take this responsibility. How seriously you take the power that comes with that thumb on the scale that you have. And seeing us candidates come through for the better part of the last year or so, kicking the tires on our policy plans. Remember the first time we came through and here things like you are in my top seven. Lets see how you do. I want to see you speak six more times and then we will see. I can tell now we are getting to decision time, the moment that iowans who take that responsibility so seriously are deciding how to use that responsibility to set the right course. I am here to ask for you to caucus for me on that day coming in february for this simple reason to help me create an American Experience that is defined not by exclusion but by belonging for everyone in United States of america. [cheering] mayor buttigieg it sounds like you are ready for that. Which is good. Because the great thing about that future is we can Start Building it even before the first vote is cast. Im going to share a lot with you about how i envision using the powers of the presidency to change the policy of this country to make our lives better, but the first thing we have got to do is unify this country around that sense of belonging that calls out to everybody and lets them know where they fit in the future. And we can do that in the course of this campaign. The fact that you are here means we are already doing it. So, thank you for what you are building for all of us. [cheering] mayor buttigieg its important because we are going to need that, not only to earn a big win on caucus night, not only to earn the nomination and earn the election and the presidency itself, but we are going to need it more than ever that next day. That first day i always talk about i asked voters to picture. I encourage you to picture in his much detail as you can to close your eyes if you want. That day the sun comes up over des moines and the rest of this country and donald trump is no longer the president of the United States. [loud cheering] mayor buttigieg that day will come. Were going to bring that day about and make sure it comes sooner rather than later, right . But then what . [laughter] mayor buttigieg then comes the hard part. Think about how it is going to feel that day. Yes, we will be glad to have this presidency in the rearview mirror, no question. No more the corruption, no more tweets emanating from the oval office that we have to worry about. Putting it away will be good. But then think about how it is going to feel. Our country will be divided. Our country will be hurting. Our country will be exhausted from fighting even more than we are right now. You just think about everything we have been through and everything we are about to go through in this country. We are going to need a president who can call the American People not to agree on everything, that will never happen, but who can call the American People to support one another as one nation. And think about the problems we are still going to have on that day. Think about what we will be up against. That day that sun comes up, itll be coming up over a climate that is changing so quickly we are just a few years away from the point of no return. It will be coming up over schools where kids are being drilled in active Shooter Training before they have learned how to read. Its going to be coming up over an economy where it is no longer possible anywhere in any county of the United States of america for somebody who works fulltime at minimum wage to afford a twobedroom apartment. So, things will still be so troubled in this country. There will still be something very wrong in the heart of that woman behind the wheel who saw a 14yearold girl and a 12yearold boy and said i am going to hurt them because they do not look like me. That is the work we are going to need the next president to do. To rise to meet those challenges with big policy ideas and do it in a way thats going to serve to unify and not divide the American People. The good news is thats exactly the kind of job the presidency is for. The presidency has a purpose, and it is not to glorify the president. It is to empower, unify, and heal the American People. That is what i want to use that office for with your help. [cheering] mayor buttigieg that is what a president can do. To call this country to its highest values, values that have been with us all along and that we are at our best when we look to and allow those values to guide our steps. But we got to recognize what those values require of us love of country. Respect for the flag. There is a lot of things that that requires of us. And they are not being met by a military parade or a president who thumps his chest. Talks about how tough he is. It most certainly is not being honored by the decision to overthrow military justice and pardon war criminals as if theres no difference between a honorableal and an Service Member of the United States of america. Thats not patriotism. Now, im here to talk about a different kind of patriotism, one that recognizes the most important thing we can do to honor the flag is to honor the values it stands for. That to recognize the patriotism, for example, and the spirit of those who go before congress and put their careers on the line to testify about wrongdoing because that is an act of loyalty to the republic for which it stands. [cheering] mayor buttigieg im talking about a patriotism and a love of country that begins with the knowledge that our country is made of people, and you cant love a country if you hate half the people who are in it. [cheering] mayor buttigieg so, what does it mean to live up to love of country in our times . What does it require . It certainly requires we keep this country safe from all enemies foreign and domestic. It requires making sure that abroad, we see to it that any ally or would be ally never questions whether it is a good idea to bet your life on the credibility of the United States, because we will be a country that keeps its word to enemies and allies alike. That is how we protect our country abroad. [cheering] mayor buttigieg and protecting our country, that means protecting each other. That starts right here at home. It is as a matter of National Security that we must see to it that the Second Amendment can never be confused for an excuse to do nothing at all when it comes to keeping our communities and our schools and our churches and our Shopping Centers safe from gun violence. That is National Security. [cheering] mayor buttigieg if were serious about protecting our country and serious about protecting each other, that means protecting our future. That is why so much depends on us rising to meet the challenge of Climate Change as the Global Security threat of our time and leading the world in doing something about it, and how proud we would be if we did because the world needs us right now to take on Climate Change. [cheering] mayor buttigieg so thats where a value like love of country leads me and will be my presidency. Im talking about values. Im talking about values that right now they are using to pit us against each other, like faith. First of all, this is a country that was built on the idea that our constitution and our offices and government belong to people of every religion and of no religion equally. It is in the constitution. Now, it is also the case that we can call out to those who are guided by faith traditions and offer a choice, and the choice is this do you want to have a white house that you can turn on the news and see what theyre up to and not have to scratch your head or shake your head and say whatever happened to i was hungry and you fed me . I was a stranger and you welcomed me . What you have done for the least of these you have done for me. That is the choice we can give to the American People because god does not belong to a Political Party in the United States of america. [cheering] mayor buttigieg values like democracy that that flag has always stood for when we have been at our best. But being a democracy, being serious about democracy you need some help . Can we get some help to somebody, right that way . Thank you. When it comes to being a democracy, that means living up to the values of democracy. Not just democracy as a system. But democracy as a way of life. That means seeing to it that power in this country is in the hands of the people, that our officials are accountable for. That is what keeps our government working for us rather than the other way around. Your vote is what keeps your government working for you and not the other way around. So, lets see to it that every vote is counted and every voter counts and pass a 21st century Voting Rights act to make sure Voter Suppression of any kind is not tolerated in the United States of america. [cheering] mayor buttigieg lets do something about districts being drawn around this country by politicians who get to pick out voters, instead of the other way around. And if what it requires to end Citizens United is a constitutional amendment, then that is exactly why they thought up the process for constitutional reform. Lets think big and protect our democracy. [cheering] mayor buttigieg thinking about values like freedom and this is all about freedom, but freedom is bigger and more complicated than cutting ever tax or regulation or program youve ever seen. That is not going to make us free. Freedom requires a great deal from us. And part of it, yes, getting government out of the way, especially when government is in the wrong places. We need to keep government out of the business of, for example, county clerks telling you who you ought to marry. Thank you, iowa, for your hand in bringing Marriage Equality to th [cheering] respecting American Freedom means keeping government out of the business of dictating to women what their Reproductive Health care choices ought to be. That freedom belongs with you. [cheering] mayor buttigieg but sometimes it means insisting that the Public Sector step up. That is why we have local government, that is why we have mayors. You are not free if there is not a clean, safe, plowed road between where you are and where you need to get to. You are not free, if you do not know where youre going to go get a glass of safe drinking water. We secure freedom by making certain things available. Like schools. Thats why we need a secretary of education who believes in Public Education and supports americas teachers. Mayor buttigieg i thiha sector and deliver health care, because you are not free if you do not have health care coverage. That is the idea of medicare for all who want it. Give everybody a public option, but i trust you to decide whether you want it. The important thing is to see to it one way or the other that there is no such thing as an uninsured american, and that is what we are going to do. [cheering] mayor buttigieg so, you see how these values can lead us forward at this moment that is coming up where we are going to have to move fast. Theres a sense of urgency here. We cant wait 10 years, cant wait four years. We cannot wait to tackle these problems in front of us. Climate change cant wait. The deadlines are not being set by congress. It is being set by earth. It will come and go without us if we do not act. We cannot wait to take steps to see to it that ours is a country where your race has no bearing on your health or your wealth or your Life Expectancy or your relationship with law enforcement. We have got to act on that now. That is what the douglas plan is about. [cheering] mayor buttigieg we cant wait to do something about the crisis of deaths from despair in this country, and that means that just as much attention and just as much open discussion as we give to physical medical issues must now be there for Mental Health and substance issues, too. Lets bring it into the sunlight and lets talk about it and lets fix it. Now. Issue after issue, we cant wait. We got to act now. And, when we do, we have the opportunity to bring together this new american Majority Ready to make sure we do the right thing. But we got to do it together. Not that we agree on everything. That is ok, we are not supposed to agree on everything, but the presidency is supposed to belong to all of us, and this campaign is designed to call in everyone who wants to see that Better Future. Yes, we are calling out to progressives, we are calling out to moderates. Im meeting an awful lot of what i like to call future former republicans who are ready to be part of that change. [cheering] mayor buttigieg thats how were going to win. But more importantly, that is how we are going to govern. We are going to do this together. If there has got to be a fight, we will have a fight. But this cant be about fighting. We cant be fighting so much that it gets to where fighting is all we have got. The point is not the fight. The point is what lies on the other side of the fight, and that is better life for all of us. That is what i mean when i talk about an American Experience defined by belonging. Be ready to help us bring about that day. [cheering] [chanting pete] mayor buttigieg now is our chance. Sor tten slightly less intimate since we started out with about four people in an office about the size of this stage here. And we have grown with your help to the movement we are becoming today. But ive never seen a group so large we couldnt have an exchange of ideas. So we have gathered questions from folks as they have come in. Id like you to welcome another team member with the famous fishbowl who will guide our discussion. You already met claudia. Dont we have the best organizers and volunteers on this team . [cheering] mayor buttigieg now, to be your voice, i want you to welcome another, a fantastic member of the pete for america team, please welcome to the stage charlotte hoffman, who is going to guide our discussion. [cheering] mayor buttigieg wearing one of my favorite shirts, which contains the values of our campaign. Look at that. You got fans. If it was your question, give a holler or wave, so i can look at you as we respond. Charlotte so, this question is from bob l. And he asks, how are you going to keep the economy strong . Mayor buttigieg great question. Again, if that was you, give a little holler so i can look in your general direction. Hello, bob. Thanks for coming. So, this is really important. We have to make sure we continue Economic Growth in this country. And in order to do that, we have got to invest in the things that make our economy competitive. Our economy is not going to go to grow just because. Its going to grow because we have the best schools or are working towards having the best schools because we have the right infrastructure because we have the right workforce none of that happens on its own. We have got to make sure we make those investments. The economy cannot keep growing of people are not healthy or if we remain as divided as a are. That is going to catch up to us. We have to make sure we are making responsible fiscal decisions. We have to make sure we are on top of the deficit and the debt. Remember when we used to hear from Congressional Republicans about the deficit in the debt. Its 1 trillion and growing. We got a get a handle on that, and we can with responsible investments and responsible , yes, asks the wealthiest incorporations to pay their fair share, but its completely compatible with growth. One other thing i want to point out. Im worried when it comes to our economy we are counting the wrong things. Because a lot of communities, especially in the midwest, are not seeing the kind of benefits we see on paper. Its great the dow jones is doing well. But so many people are being left behind. It is why when i am president we will measure the performance of our economy not by the dow jones, not by the gdp, but by the Income Growth of the 90 . If you are working and your income is growing, that counts towards a good economy in my book. [cheering] charlotte this is from julie m. And she asks, what can we do to better counter the polarization and fractures within the party and nation to get to a leader that is recognized as for the people and by the people . Mayor buttigieg very good. Hi, julie. Thanks for coming. So, this is so important. Lets start with the party part, because this is really important, right . The primary process is designed to help you see the differences among all of Us Democratic candidates. Thats fine. That is healthy. But weve got to remember we are on the same team at the end of the day. Weve got to build each other up. How many people have run for president , 25 . Something like that. 24 dont get to be the nominee. The moment we identify the one who is, everybody else has to rally around that nominee no matter who it is. Us candidates need to make sure our supporters are focused on that, too. Look, i think in a room, every place i have been to, we have had healthy, respectful conversations among different camps. Online can be a little a bit of a weird place. [laughter] mayor buttigieg try to put a little good out online, too. But we got to remember we are on the same team. If there was ever a reason to unify and get over the 10 or 20 of the things we do not agree on internally, it is looking to the other side. This is not about us all agreeing. It is the same thing with my message to republicans. Im not trying to trick anybody into thinking we will all agree. Sayingying looking look at what we are against and look at what we can build together. Everyone has to see where they fit in that future. We cant go on like this. We cannot have oh, we got air coming in. All right. We cannot remain this divided and succeed as a country. And lets remember that the people we know and love who voted differently than we did, that doesnt make them bad people anymore than voting what we think of as the right way made us good people. What is true is that all of us can have Better Things and worst things aroused in us by leadership. And one of the reasons the presidency matters so much is is it calling out to what is best in us or calling out to what is worst in us . I believe we will be a more unified country with the president i am determined to be, who calls out to what is best in us and asks us to lift each other up as a country. [cheering] charlotte this question is from another julie. Julie p. The question is, president obama wanted to do so many things. How will you handle this . Mayor buttigieg yes. All right. So, president obama experienced the challenges of bad faith resistance in todays washington. Although we should pause for a second and remember also that reversing a great depression, bringing back the auto industry, covering tens of millions of americans, and bringing justice to osama bin laden, not too bad for eight years of work. [cheering] mayor buttigieg if you think about it. But, even so, we saw a resistance right and left. By right and left, i do not mean politically. I mean figuratively, any time step into official washington. But heres what we have going for us that is true even more than it was 10 years ago, even more than what president obama had to work with, and it is this the American People want to see these changes. Even in more conservative states, when we talk about issues from making sure that people get paid more and raising wages to making sure that we get health care for everybody, one way or the other, to delivering paid family leave, even issues where my party has been on defense immigration, guns. Right now 80 of republicans and most gun owners think we ought to at least be doing background checks. What we have right now is a powerful american majority that we need to engage to get the right things done. And that will mean not only taking the presidency. That is the beginning. Not only seeking to take the senate, because it sure would be nice to have Mitch Mcconnell no longer be the Senate Majority leader. [cheering] mayor buttigieg we got to work on that. Its part of why having a candidate with coattails will be helpful. But also, no matter what is going on in the senate, on the floor, remembering that each of those members, each of those senators has to answer to voters. And the voters are with us. The best use i can think of that big blue and white airplane is to fly into the home state of anybody getting in the way of a change that is needed that is good for america, that is popular in more conservative states, and ask their voters to ask their senator why they are being defied. I believe that might be what it takes to reunite some of these folks with their conscience. [cheering] charlotte this question is from julie d. [laughter] mayor buttigieg lot of julies. Were in iowa. Mayor buttigieg the land of many julies. [laughter] mayor buttigieg i dont see it at all. [laughter] mayor buttigieg i dont see the resemblance. No, ill admit that i feel a little bit of nervousness when saturday night rolls around. [laughter] i heard it isg saturday today, but i think it is a rerun. Well probably be all right. I used to look forward to having a good laugh. Now i got to wonder if im going to get made fun of. [laughter] mayor buttigieg if there is ever a good problem to have, i guess this would be it. [applause] mayor buttigieg its all in good fun. Charlotte this next question is der h. Un i hope im pronouncing that correctly. Mayor buttigieg all right. [laughter] charlotte what do you think the extent of foreign involvement should be, more or less . What specific issues long or short term . Mayor buttigieg i imagine you are thinking about u. S. Involvement in the world and how we engage in the world around us . So, i believe in a very engaged america, but that doesnt mean you march in and change other countries, especially at gunpoint. Weve seen how that works out. And one thing i believe we have got to do is replace this authorization for the use of military force that was passed to deal with 9 11 but now has folks in places like east africa , and we got folks packing their bags for afghanistan that werent even born on 9 11. We have to bring an end to endless war, and it starts by changing the authorization process and making sure that we have a responsibility in force. Now, having said that, even with a higher bar for use of force, we should be much more engaged using the other tools in our toolkit, diplomatic and economic. And moral. I would argue that the world needs america right now, but it cant be just any america. It cannot be the america this president has reduced us to. It is basically just one more country out there scrapping for advantage. It has to be an america whose policies are based on our values. And the fact that our values, at least when we are being her best, our values line up with universal values. And that is true for our competitors, like the way that china is treating a religious minority or the protesters of hong kong standing up for democracy, they need to know they have a friend in the United States. It is also our allies, seeing the way the saudi arabia and turkey have behaved, because they know there is a president who does not care. We have to send a message that we do care about these values, and we will have a hand not trying to singlehandedly change every country after our own image but trying to make sure there is more peace and prosperity everywhere in the world. If there were more peace and prosperity and stability in central america, we would have less of a migration issue. If there was more stability in the middle east right now the entire world would be better off. We have an interest in bringing that about and a responsibility to do that, not alone, but in partnership with an International Community that was nts to see those same things happen. [cheering] charlotte from craig f. How would you address the federal deficit . Mayor buttigieg all right. Craig . So, maybe its a generational thing. Im much more inclined to talk about this than most people in my party have been, which is ironic because if you look at it , my party has a much better track record in terms of every presidency in my lifetime where the debt went down or up. The longer youre planning to be here, the more this might catch up to us. I think we also have to look at this as a matter of fairness between generations because somebody has to pay the bill for all of this. The good news is we can get the deficit under control with two things in mind. First of all, only make promises we can keep. And watch every dollar. Even right now in the promise making stage, we are watching the dollars and the pennies. When it comes to college, im a big believer in making sure cost is no longer a barrier for anybody to go to college. But i also think it matters how much income you make, and if you are in that top 10 , i still want you to thrive, but im going to ask you to pay your own tuition so we can save those dollars for other things and target them where they make the biggest difference. [cheering] its why weve worked hard to create a Health Care Plan that solves that problem, that makes sure there is no such thing as an uninsured american, but instead of 50 trillion over 50 years, its 1. 5, still a lot of money but an amount of money we can obtain by taking responsible steps, like rolling back trump tax cuts that benefit corporations and the wealthy. [cheering] mayor buttigieg i mean, if you paid a dollar and federal income taxes last year you paid more than amazon did. It makes no sense. We got corporations making billions of dollars in profit. Some of them have negative tax rates. Id like to get in on that. Negative tax rate, for some of the most Profitable Companies in the world. We got to have real enforcement. Reform the Capital Gains taxes so there is some kind of comparison between the way you get taxed on a paycheck and the way you get taxed on a hedge fund. If we do all of these things im not even talking about taking us back to the eisenhower years. This is not some level of taxation that is incompatible with growth. This is responsibly funding our government. If we do that, then we also can start reducing the amount of debt service dollars that are going into debt service when they could be going into programs that will make us better off. We can do this if we have the political will to restrain what we are promising on the front end and make sure those who are best positioned to support this country are actually paying their fair share. [cheering] charlotte so, this is our final question. It comes from daniel m. It comes from daniel m. Right here. Mayor buttigieg all right. [laughter] charlotte where do you stand on gun rights . Mayor buttigieg so, here is what i believe. First of all, i am with the majority of gun owners, republicans, democrats, and americans who think that background checks are just common sense. You know, you need one to get a job. Got to have one [cheering] mayor buttigieg and, by the way, there is this loophole where if the background check does not come back, they just give you the gun. Can you imagine if in the hiring process, if the background check was late, hire them anyway. Of course not. Another thing i think that is very important is red flag laws. This is when somebody identifies a loved one that could be a danger to themselves lets not overlook how much suicide has been a big part of the problem we are facing here. We ought to have a means for making sure that when somebody is a danger, whether it is Domestic Abuse or one of these other challenges, that we can do something about that danger. And i also believe that we need to look at what kind of weaponry can be sold. We got to draw a line somewhere. Some folks will disagree on where it ought to go. The way i see it, anything remotely resembling the stuff i was training on to go over to afghanistan has no business being sold for profit anywhere near a school. [cheering] mayor buttigieg we just dont need it. All of this, in my view, is compatible with the Second Amendment. None of this will be a guaranteed way to prevent every single tragedy, but it will save thousands and thousands and thousands of lives. And i believe we owe it to young people in this country today. I heard from a 14yearold girl who wrote me saying she was so afraid that her day at school would be her last that she has written out a will at the age of 14. No other modern country has this happen at this rate. And i refuse to accept the idea that our country is somehow inferior and we just ought to put up with this. Americans deserve as much safety as anybody else in the world, and we can be completely constitutional and completely rational and do something about this problem. [cheering] mayor buttigieg all right. Whoops. Sorry about that. Dont worry about it. One more big thank you to charlotte for being your voice this evening. Please treat her well, they are working awfully hard for this community. And i want to thank all of you again for caring about where we are headed as a country and for being involved. I want to leave you with this. I think a lot of us are watching the process in washington and just feeling exhausted by it, because we know what is probably going to happen. It goes to the senate and sometimes it feels like they are going through the motions and there is a sense of exhaustion. That is how they get us, though. Thats right. Mayor buttigieg we cannot give in to exhaustion and cynicism and turn off the process completely. We cant. We have got to make sure that we take control. And the great news is, in a few short days, itll be 2020, and what happens in 2020 is in our hands. It is in our hands. No matter what goes on on the floor of the senate, it is up to us to bring about a Better Future. That is your power. That is my source of hope. It takes hope to be involved in politics at any level. Are you ready to spread a sense of hope to everybody you know . [cheering and applause] mayor buttigieg are you ready to bring about a Better Future for us and for those we love . And could you help make sure that i succeed in the Iowa Caucuses in 37 days . [cheering] mayor buttigieg west des moines, i believe you will help me become the nominee and the president. I will work every day to make you proud. Lets make history together, iowa. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Yes, legislation. Mayor buttigieg thats the thing, the senate cannot get away with defying parents like you forever. Even if we dont take the senate, look how they voted on the aca, that shows the power of responding to folks like you. Help is on the way. Hang in there. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for being here.
