Thank you. Gieg thank you. Thank you so much. What a wonderful welcome. You always make me feel right at home here in iowa. Thank ying t in joining us tonight. Timeets hear it one more for representative barry. Supported to have your and thank you for your leadership in the state. I am thrilled to be with you. It has been a great day back on the trail. We took a beat. Had a lot of not quite so healthy food over the last few days. Present. T a christmas our rescue puggle. My fatherinlaw made a step letter for him to get onto the bed, because he does not have the vertical leap to make it on his own. If he dont put we dont put them on a bed, he will cry all night. Anyway, we had a great christmas holiday. So thrilled in the middle of the holidays and some interesting Football Games on television. Youre all spending that is all i will say about football this evening, i promise. So glad to be here with you. Really coming together to discuss the future of our country. And the role that iowa is going to play in 37 short days in deciding the trajectory of the nomination, and therefore, the republic and therefore the world. No pressure. I can tell how seriously iowa ns take this responsibility. How seriously you take the power that comes with that some on the scale that you have. And seeing us candidates come through for the better part of the last year or so, kicking the tires on our policy plans. Remember the first time we came through and her things like you are in my top seven. Lets see how you do. I want to see you speak six more times and then we will see. I can tell now we are getting to decision time, the moment that thats who take responsibility so seriously are deciding how to use that responsibility to set the right course. I am here to ask for you to caucus for me on that day coming in february for this simple reason to help me create an American Experience that is defined not by exclusion but by the longing for everyone in United States of america. [cheering] mayor buttigieg it sounds like you are ready for that. Which is good. Because the great thing about that future is we can Start Building it even before the first vote is cast. Im going to share a lot with envision using the powers of the presidency to change the policy of this country to make our lives better, but the first thing we have got to do is unify this country around that sense of belonging that calls out to everybody and lets them know where they fit in the future. And we can do that in the course of this campaign. The fact that you are here means we are already doing it. So, thank you for what you are building for all of us. [cheering] mayor buttigieg its important because we are going to need that, not only to earn a big win on caucus night, not only to earn the nomination and earn the election and the presidency itself, but we are going to need it more than ever that next day. That first day i always talk about i asked voters to picture. I encourage you to picture in his much detail as you can to close your eyes if you want. Comes up overun des moines and the rest of this country and donald trump is no longer the president of the United States. [loud cheering] mayor buttigieg that day will come. Were going to bring that day about and make sure it comes sooner rather than later, right . But then what . [laughter] mayor buttigieg then comes the hard part. Think about how it is going to feel that day. Yes, we will be glad to have this presidency in the rearview mirror, no question. No more the corruption, no more tweets emanating from the oval office that we have to worry about. Putting it away will be good. But then think about how it is going to feel. Our country will be divided. Our country will be hurting. Our country will be exhausted from fighting even more than we are right now. You just think about everything we have been through in everything we are about to go through in this country. We are going to need a president who can call the American People not to agree on everything, that will never happen, but who can call the American People to support one another as one nation. And think about the problems we are still going to have on that day. Think about what we will be up against. That day that sun comes up, itll be coming up over a climate that is changing so quickly we are just a few years away from the point of no we turn part no return. It will be coming up over schools where kids are being drilled in active Shooter Training before they have learned how to read. Its going to be coming up over longeromy where it is no possible anywhere in any county of the United States of america for somebody who works fulltime at minimum wage to afford a two bedroom apartment. So, things will still be so troubled in this country. There will still be something very wrong in the heart of that woman behind the wheel who saw a 14yearold girl and a 12yearold boy and said i am going to hurt them because they do not look like me. That is the work we are going to need the next president to do. To rise to meet those challenges with big policy ideas and do it in a way thats going to serve to unify and not divide the American People. The good news is thats exactly the kind of job the presidency is for. It is not to glorify the president. Is to empower, unify, and heal the American People. That is what i want to use that office for with your help. [cheering] mayor buttigieg that is what a president can do. To call this country to its highest values, values that have been with us all along and that we are at our best when we look to and allow those values to guide our steps. Recognize what those values require of us because it is not always obvious. Take patriotism. Respect for the flight. There is a lot of things that that requires of us. And they are not being met by a military parade or a president who thumps his chest. Most certainly not being honored by the decision to overthrow military justice and pardon war criminals as if theres no difference between a war criminal and it Honorable Service number of United States of america. Thats not patriotism. To talk about a different kind of patriotism, one that recognizes the most important thing we can do to honor the flag is to honor the values it stands for. That to recognize the patriotism, for example, and the spirit of those who go before congress and put their careers on the line to testify about wrongdoing because that is an active loyalty to the republic for which it stands. [cheering] mayor buttigieg im talking about a patriotism and a love of country that begins with the knowledge that our country is made of people, and you cant love of people if you hate half the people who are in it. So, what does it mean to live up to love of country . What does it require . It certainly requires we keep this country safe from all enemies foreign and domestic. It requires making sure that abroad we see to it that any ally or would be ally never questions whether it is a good idea to bet your life on the credibility of the United States, because we will be a country that keeps its word to enemies and allies alike. That is how we protect our country abroad. [cheers] protectinggieg and our country, that means protecting each other. That starts right here at home. It is as a matter of National Security that we must see to it that the Second Amendment can never be confused for an excuse to do nothing at all when it comes to keeping our communities and our schools and our churches. And our Shopping Center safe from gun violence that is National Security. [cheering] werebuttigieg if serious about protecting our country and serious about protecting each other and our future, that is like so much so much what is why depends on us rising to meet the challenge of Climate Change as the Global Security threat of our time and leading the world and doing something about it, and how proud we would be if we did because the world needs us right now to take on Climate Change. Where a value like love of country leads me and will be my presidency. Im talking about values. Im talking about values that right now they are used to pit us against each other, like faith. First of all, this is a country that was built on the idea that our constitution and our government belong to people of every religion and of no religion equally. It is in the constitution. Now, it is also the case that we can call out to those who are guided by faith traditions and offer a choice, and the choice is is do you want to have a white house that you can turn on the news and see what theyre up to and not have to scratch your head or shake your head and say whatever happened to i was hungry and you fed me . I was a stranger and you welcomed me . Twhat you have done to the least of these you have done for me. god does not along to Political Party in the United States of america. [cheering] mayor buttigieg values like lag hascy that that f always stood for when we have been out our best. Being serious about democracy can we get some help to somebody write that way . Right that way . Thank you. It comes to being a democracy, that means living up to the values of democracy. Not just democracy as a system. But democracy as a way of life. That means seeing to it that power in this country is in the hands of the people, that our officials are accountable for. That is what keeps our government working for us rather than the other way around. What keeps your government working for you and not the other way around. So, lets see to it that every vote is counted and every voter counts and pass a 21st century Voting Rights act to make sure Voter Suppression of any kind is not tolerated in the United States of america. [cheering] mayor buttigieg lets do something about districts being drawn around this country by politicians who get to pick out voters, instead of the other way round. Requires two and Citizens United is a constitutional amendment, and then that is exactly why they thought up the process. Lets think big and protect our democracy. Thinking about values like freedom and this is all about freedom, but freedom is bigger and more complicated than cutting every tax a regulation. That is not going to make us free. Freedom requires a great deal from us. And part of it, yes, getting government out of the way, especially when government is in the wrong places. We need to keep government out of the business of, for example, county clerks telling you who you ought to marry. Thank you, iowa the united statf america. Respecting American Freedom means keeping government out of the business oct repductive Health Care Choices ought to be. But sometimes it means insisting that the Public Sector step up. That is why we have local government, that is why we have mayors. You are not free if there is not a clean, safe, plowed road between where you are and where you need to get to. If you are not free if you do not know where youre going to safe drinking of water. I making certain things available. Secretary of education who believes in Public Education and supports americas teachers. I think that we need to step up in the Public Sector and deliver health care, because you are not free if you do not have health care coverage. That is the idea of medicare for all who want it. If everybody give everybody a public option but i trust you to decide whether you wanted. The important thing is to see to it one way or the other that there is no such thing as an uninsured american, and that is what we are going to do. [cheering] so, you see how these values can lead us forward at this moment that is coming up where we are going to have to move fast. Theres a sense of urgency here. We cant 10 years, cant wait four years. We cannot wait to tackle these problems Climate Change cant wait. The deadlines are not being set by congress. It is being set by earth. It will come and go without us if we do not act. We cannot wait to take steps to ae to it that ours is country where your race has no bearing on your health or your wealth are your relationship with law enforcement. Is about. At the plan we cant wait to do something about the crisis of deaths from despair in this country, and that means that just as much attention and just as much open discussion as we give to physical medical issues must now be there for Mental Health an substance issuesd, too. Lets bring it into the sunlight and lets talk about it and letfis fix it. Now. Issue after issue, we cant wait. We got to act now. And, when we do, we have the opportunity to bring together this new american majority making sure we do the right thing. It we got to do it together. Not that we agree on everything. We are not supposed to agree on everything, but the presidency is supposed to belong to all of us, in this campaign is designed to call in everyone who wants to see that better future. Yes, we are calling out to progressives, we are calling out to moderatess. Im meeting an awful lot of future former republicans you are ready to be part of that change. Who are ready to be part of that change. Thats how were going to win. But more importantly, that is how we are going to govern. We are going to do this together. There is got a be a fight, we will have a fight. We cant be fighting so much that he gets to where fighting is all we have got. The point is what lies on the other side of the fight, and that is better life for all of us. That is what i mean when i talk about the American Experience defined by belonging. Be ready to help us bring about that day. [cheering] our gatherings have gotten slightly less intimately since we started out with about four people in an office about the size of this stage here. And we have grown with your help to the movement we are becoming today. But ive never seen a group so large. An exchange of ideas. We have gathered questions from folks as they have come in. Id like you to welcome another team member with the famous fishbowl. You already met claudia. Dont we have the best organizers and volunteers on this team . I want be your voice, you to welcome another, a fantastic member of the pete for america team, please welcome to the stage charlotte who is going to guide our discussion. [cheering] wearing one of my favorite shirts, which contains the values of our campaign. Look at that. Wyou got fans. If it was your question, get a holler or wave, so i can look at you as we respond. So, this question is from bob l. And he asks, how are you going to keep the economy strong . Mayor buttigieg great question. Again, if that was you, give a little holler so i can look in your general direction. Hello, bob. Thanks for coming. So, this is really important. We have to make sure we continued Economic Growth in this country. And in order to do that, we have got to invest in the things that make our economy competitive. Our economy is not going to go just because. Its going to grow because we have the best schools or are working towards having the best schools because we have the right infrastructure because we have the right workforce none of that happens on its own. We have got to make sure we make those investments. The economy cannot keep growing of people are not healthy or if we remain as divided as a are. That is going to catch up to us. S. We have to make sure we are on debt. The deficit and the remember when we used to hear from republicans about the deficit in the debt. Its 1 trillion and growing. We got a get a handle on that, and we can with responsible investments and responsible taxation, but yes, ask the wealthiest incorporations to pay their fair share, but its completely compatible with growth. One other thing i want to point out. Im worried when it comes to our economy we are counting the wrong things. Because a lot of communities, especially in the midwest, are not seeing the kind of benefits we see on paper. Its great the dow jones is doing well. But so many people are being left behind. It is why when i am president we will measure the performance of our economy not by the dow jones, not by the gdp, but by the Income Growth of the 90 . If you are working and your income is growing, that counts towards a good economy in my book. [cheering] this is from julie m. We she asks, what can do to better counter the polarization and fractures when the party and nation to get to a leader that is recognized as for the people and by the people . Mayor buttigieg very good. Hi, julie. Thanks for coming. So, this is so important. Lets start with the party cause this is really important, right . The primary process is designed to help you see the differences among all of Us Democratic candidates. Thats fine. That is healthy. But weve got to remember we are on the same team at the end of the day. Weve got to build each other up. How many people have run for president , 25 . 24 dont get to be the nominee. The moment we identify the one who is everybody else has to rally around that nominee the matter who it is. We us candidates need to make sure our supporters are focused on that, too. Room, think in a everyplace i have been to, we have had healthy, respectful conversations among different camps. Online can be a little bit of a weird place. Try to put a little good out online, too. To remember we are on the same team. Tothere was ever a reason unify and get over the 10 or 20 of the things we do not agree on is looking to the other side. This is not about us all agreeing. It is the same thing with my message to republicans. Im not trying to trick anybody into thinking we will all agree. Look at what we can build together. Everyone has to see where they fit in that future. We cant go on like this. We cannot have, oh, we got air coming in. All right. This dividedain and succeed as a country. And lets remember that the people we know and love who voted differently than we did, that doesnt make them bad people anymore then voting what we think of as the right way made us good people. What is true is that all of us can have Better Things and worst things aroused in us by leadership. And one of the reason the presidency matter so much is is it calling out to what is best in us, or calling out to what is worst in us . I believe we will be a more unified country with the president i am determined to be who calls out to what is best in us and asked us to lift each other up for the country. [cheering] this question is from another julie. Julie p. The question is, president obama wanted to do so many things. How will you handle this . Mayor buttigieg yes. All right. So, president obama experience he challenges of bad resistance in todays washington. Although we should pause for a second and remember that reversing a great depression, bringing back the auto industry, covering tens of millions of americans and capturing and killing osama bin laden, not too bad for eight years of work. But, even so, we saw a resistance right and left. By right left, i do not mean politically. Anytime you step into washington. But heres what we have going for us that is true even more than it was 10 years ago, even more than what president obama had to work with that it is this the American People want to see these changes. Even in more conservative states, what we talk about issues from making sure that people get paid more and raising wages to making sure that we health care for everybodyget, to way or the other, delivering paid family leave, even issues where my party has been on defense immigration, guns. Right now 80 of republicans and most gun owners think we ought to at least be doing background checks. What we have right now is a majorityamerican that we need to engage to get the right thing done. And that will mean not only taking the presidency. That is the beginning. Not only seeking to take the senate, because it sure would be nice to have Mitch Mcconnell no longer be the Senate Majority leader. [cheering] mayor buttigieg we got to work on that. As part of why having candidate with coattails will be helpful. The matter what is going on in the senate, on the floor, remembering that each of those members, each of those senators have to answer to voters. The voters are withe u us. The best use i can think of that airplane is white to fly into the home state of anybody getting and the way of a change that is needed that is good for america, that, is popular and more conservative states and ask their voters to ask their senator why they are being defied. I believe that might be what it takes to reunite some of these folks with their conscience. This question is from julie d. [laughter] mayor buttigieg lot of julies. Were in iowa. Mayor buttigieg that land of many julies. [laughter] julie d asks, what do you think of the snl for trail of you portrayal of you . [laughter] mayor buttigieg i dont see it at all. I dont see the resemblance. No, ill admit that i feel alit tle bit of nervousness when saturday night rolls around. Its saturday at 8 00 but i think it is a rerun. Well probably all right. I used to look forward to having a good laugh. Not i got to wonder if im going to get made fun of. If there is ever good problem to have, i guess this would be it. [applause] its all in good fun. Next question is from dudnender h. I hope im pronouncing that correctly. Mayor buttigieg all right. [laughter] what do you think the extent of foreign involvement should be, more or less . What specific issues long or short term . Mayor buttigieg i imagine you are thinking about u. S. Involvement in the world and how we engage in the world around us . So, i believe in a very engaged america, but that doesnt mean you march in and change other countries, especially at gunpoint. Weve seen how that works out. And one thing i believe we have got to do is replace this authorization for the use of military force that was passed to deal with 9 11 but now has folks in places like east africa and we got folks packing their bags for afghanistan that werent even born on 9 11. We have to bring an end to endle ss war, and it starts by changing the authorization process. And making sure that we have a responsibility in force. Now, having said that, even with force,r bar for use of we should be much more engaged using our other tools of the toolkit if a medic and economic. I would argue that the world needs america right now, but it just any america. It cannot be the america this president that has this president has reduced us to. One more country scrapping to advantage. That has to be in america whose policies are based on of values. And the fact that our values, when we are being her best, our values line up with universal values and that is true for our thattitorslik like the way china is treating a religious minority or the protesters of hong kong standing up for democracy, they need to know they have a friend in the United States. Seeinglso our allies, the way the saudi arabia and turkey have behaved, because they know there is a president who does not care. We have to send a message that we do care. And we will have not trieying to singlehandedly change every country after our own image but trying to make sure there is more peace and prosperity everywhere in the world. If there were more peace and prosperity and stability in Central America we would have less of a migration issue. If there was more stability in the middle east right now the entire world would be better off. We have an interest he and bring that about interest in bringing that about and a responsibility to do that, not alone, but in partnership with an International Community that was to see those same things happen. [cheering] craig f. How would you address the federal deficit . Mayor buttigieg all right. Craig . So, maybe its a generational thing. Im much more inclined to talk about this than most people in my party have been, which is ironic because if you look at it much better gotten track record in terms of every presidency in my lifetime where the debt went down or up. Th longer youre planning to bee here, the more this might catch up to us. We have to look at this as a matter of fairness between generations because somebody has to play the bill p ay the bill. The good news is we can get the deficit under control with two things anin mind. Only keep promises we can keep only make promises we can keep. Right now we are watching the dollars and the pennies. When it comes to college, im a big believer in making sure cost is no longer a barrier for butne to go to college, also think it i matters how much income you make it if you are in that top 10 , i still want you to thrive, but im going to ask you to pay your own tuition so we can save those dollars for other things and target them where they make the biggest difference. Tos why weve worked hard create a Health Care Plan that solves that problem, that makes sure there is no such thing as an uninsured american but instead of 50 trillion over 50 aars, its 1. 5, but still lot of money but an amount of money we can obtain by taking responsible steps, like rolling back trump tax cuts that benefit corporations and the wealthy. I mean, if you paid a dollar and federal income taxes last year you paid more than amazon did. It makes no sense. We got corporations making billions of dollars in profit. Some of them have negative tax rates. Id like to get in on that. Negative tax rate, for some of the most profitable companies. We got to have real enforcement. Reform the Capital Gains taxes so there is some kind of comparison between the way you get taxed on a paycheck and the way you get taxed on a hedge fund. Im not even talking about taking us back to the eisenhower years. This is not some level of taxation that is incompatible with growth. This is responsibly funding our government. If we do that, then we also can start reducing the amount of debt service dollars that are going into debt service when they could be going into programs that will make us better off. We can do this if we have the political will to restrain what we are promising on the front end and make sure those who are best positioned to support this country are actually paying their fair share. [cheering] final this is our question. It comes from daniel m. It comes from daniel m. Right here. Mayor buttigieg all right. [laughter] where do you stand on gun rights . Mayor buttigieg so, here is what i believe. First of all, i am with the majority of gun owners, republicans, democrats, and americans who think that background checks are just common sense. You know, you need one to get a job. Got to have one and, by the way, there is this loophole where if th background check does not come back they just give you thee gu can you imaginen in. The hiring process if the background check was late, hire them anyway. Of course not. Another thing i think that is very important is red flag laws. This is when somebody identifies a loved one that could be a danger to themselves lets not overlook how much suicide is been a big part of the problem we are facing here. We ought to have a means for making sure that when somebody is a danger, whether it is Domestic Abuse or one of these other challenges, that we can do something about that danger. And i also believe that we need to look at what kind of weaponry we sold. We got to draw a line somewhere. Some folks will disagree on where it ought to go. Anything remotely resembling the stuff i was training on to go over in afghanistan has no business being sold for profit anywhere near a school. [cheering] mayor buttigieg we just dont need it. View ishis in my compatible with the Second Amendment. None of this will be a guaranteed way to prevent everything will tragedy, but it will save thousands and thousands and thousands of lives. And i believe we owe it to young people in this country today, i heard from a 14 world girl who wrote me saying she was so afraid that her day at school would be her last that she has written out a will at the age of 14. Country has this happened at this rate. And i refuse to accept the idea that our country is somehow inferior and just ought to put up with this. Safetyns deserve as much is anyone else is a world and we can be completely constitutional and completely rational and do something about these guns. [cheering] mayor buttigieg all right. Whoops. Sorry about that. One more big thank you to charlotte for being your voice this evening. Of yout to thank all again for caring about we are headed as a country and for being involved. I want to leave you with this. I think a lot of us are watching the process in washington and it, feeling exhausted by because we know what is probably going to happen. It goes to the senate and sometimes it feels like they are going through the motions and there is a sense of exhaustion. That is how they get us, though. Exhaustionive in to and cynicism and turned off the process completely. We cant. We have got to make sure that we take control. And the great news is in a few short days itll be 2002 and be 2020 and what happens in 2020 is it is in our hands. No matter what goes on on the floor of the senate, it is u p to us bring about a better future. That is your power. That is my source of hope. It takes hope to be involved in politics at any level. Are you ready to spread a sense of hope to everybody or you know . Are youand could you help make e that i succeed in the iowa [cheering] ayor buttigieg western des moines, i believe you will help me become the nominee in the president. I will work every day to make you proud. Lets make history together, iowa. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Mayor buttigieg thats the thing, the senate cannot get away with defying parents like you forever. Look how they voted that shows the power of responding to help is on the way. Hang in there. Here is what three senators said about they would like to see included in the proceedings. Those witnesses need to be heard in the United States senate. Schumer is saying lets have those witnesses testify on long with the documents that were reflect exactly why the funds were held off, why am meeting was not allowed with the president of ukraine and exactly the context of the july phone call. That is the minimum for a fair trial in the United States senate. Reality the democrats had all the power and leverage in the house but very little in the senate, just another example of how painful it is to be the Minority Party . The president e, chose not to cooperate but worse eyan that, he told the k witnesses not to testify before the United States congress. He refused to allow documents to be produced. Never before in an impeachment inquiry has that been done by the president of the United States. You had unusual circumstances in the house. Responsibility. The house has so responsibility on impeachment. The senate on removal. It is our responsibility and we hope our leader would want to send it to operate in a fair manner and hear from the key witnesses and receive key documents. I would start by giving each side a good amount of time to present their case. I would give the prosecution 24 hours. I would give the defense for the president 24 hours. Then i would allow plenty of time, maybe 1015 hours of time for senators to ask questions. t ask questions, we submit them in writing. Either side, prosecution or defense, can object. At that juncture we should step back and say, ok, have we heard enough . Do we want to go further . Juncture at that somebody will make a motion to dismiss. That is what happened in president clintons impeachment. The motion to dismiss was defeated, and the senate decided to hear three more witnesses. It is also possible, i am not recommending it, but it is possible, for the senate through the presiding officer, the chief justice, to appoint a committee to hear additional evidence if the senate thinks it is necessary. All i know today is i do not know if we will ever get the case. And i dont know why the speaker is doing this. Maybe she is telling the truth, that she wants to dictate the policy or the procedure rather to the senate. If shes sincere and that, i think it is unconstitutional. Maybe is a cynical political ploy. Maybe her actions demonstrate indecision. I dont know. You say there will be a trout. Speaker pelosi will send over the articles of impeachment, even if republicans do not agree to have witnesses . You say there will be a trial. Ultimately Speaker Pelosi will make that decision but i think she has been clear. She will send over the articles of impeachment. But we are in this important time right now where people are going home, like senator murkowski, like others and having to answer questions about a fair trial, whether this is going to be a rigged trial or a fair trial. Again, everybody who has grown up watching trials, whether it is on tv, or the movies, everyone understands, jonathan, that requires witnesses in order to be fair. A conversation right now. Are you are spending a trial to start in the beginning of january . I dont know exactly when the trial was start. I really dont. So, what happened we also heard from two senators, one democrat and one republican, who talked about a Weekly Prayer Group they both attended how it affects their working relationship. Straining some of the friendships ive worked hard to build over the last decade across the aisle, to be in a time when we have such sharply divided politics. I got a number of friends who i work really well with, but on certain issues and certain that reflects what is happening in our home states. Frankly in some of our families. What we really need to do in washington, i think, is model the ability to disagree with each other but not be cruel or sharp or nasty to each other.
