Impeachment inquiry, stop the ballgame where all these guys want their five minutes to hopefully have a hit on cnn. They need to lead out with pipehitting warriors who are going to come out there and crush these people and they need to drag these guys through the administration and come out there with professional counsel that is going to force all of them to lawyer up so they dont perjure themselves. Its going to force all them to recognize that this isnt play fighting, this isnt boxing gloves. This is a bar fight. [talking simultaneously] i want to say one thing about democrats and republicans. The fascinating thing as we watch this unfold is republicans have a generic incapacity to feel shame about we dont do whatever. Democrats feel shame way too quickly. [laughter] the only people who believe republican talking points are democratic senators. [talking simultaneously] first of all, all my republican friends up here have a lot of critiques about how the democrats have handled this. But i will remind everyone that the democrats are the bulwark here against nancy pelosi was savvy enough to figure out how to hold a caucus, get that caucus elected, hold it together, and i have long thought that, sure, i believe as a principle matter, the house has to impeach him and what does it say to the country and to the world if the president of the United States is not held accountable . I would have loved it if this could have happened sooner. But i think if we had nancy pelosi probably always had it in her mind, she was going to go in the fall and she was going to go fast because she thought that that was the best way to, like, hold the house together, hold the country together, and, like, but, like, get this done. [talking simultaneously] three months ago to me. You didnt know about ukraine, what was going to be the catalyst for impeachment . I think it would have been in russia. The other i think it would have been what we know about [talking simultaneously] it could be so many different countries. [laughter] right. Then like a couple other things. Here is something frightening for a person who has worked in the white house for 12 years. As chaotic as it is here from what we can see, it is way worse on the inside. Let me just tell you that. It is way worse. I think what freaked the democrats out, people who had not been for impeachment before, about that memo, about that call, i mean, i thought i was going to pass out when i read that thing. I had to put my phone down and like clutch myself. I was like, oh, my god. First of all, this is one thing [indiscernible] what are we not seeing . Obviously they did all this thing, stuff, with poland, with russia. I mean, nbc did a great timeline of this. The ukraine broody bar stuff barr stuff happened in the spring. This has been going on for a long time. Look at don jr. s tweeting and the times when he was tweeting about biden and ukraine and you match all that up, this is like this has been a major effort inside the white house for a long time. First of all, of course the russia stuff is more important. And [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org] [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2019] we are watching live events at the white house. This is an event for the hispanic heritage month and President Trump is expected to address the crowd shortly. Youre watching live coverage on cspan. Cspan is live at the white house where were waiting for trump to arrive at an hispanic heritage month event. While we wait, here is a portion of the washington journal on campaign 2020. Sure. So prior to the last week, we had four out of michigans seven Democratic House members who had supported impeachment. Over a rapid span of a few hours, we had the final three democrats who had not supported impeachment. Haley stevens and another freshman. Democrats who won republican seats in 2018. Then Debbie Dingell who represents a fairly solid democratic district but has a fair number of trump voters or blue collar voters. Hey all swung around and lets be careful here they dont necessarily support impeachment at this point, but what they do support is an inquiry. Weve had at least a few republicans say they support an inquiry, but at the same time at least one republican on the record from the delegation as saying that he thinks this is a witch hunt and this the democrats wont be satisfied until they try to kick him out of office, even though he was duly elected. Host is there anyone left in the democratic delegation from michigan that doesnt actively upport an impeachment inquiry . Guest right now the one with the fuzziest position is the one running for reelection in 2020, thats senator gary peters. Hes a firstterm senator here from metro detroit. He basically indicated that, basically that he was very that he was supportive of the house and that he would watch what they were doing, but he an t outright call for impeachment inquiry or support impeachment. Hes still kind of keeping his powder dry. Hes probably doing that in part because he already has a republican opponent who actually did quite well against incumbent Debbie Stabenow in 2018. He only lost by six points when most polls showed he was going to lose by double digits potentially. So because peters has what is perceived as a fairly strong republican challenger, hes probably just surveying the territory. But to be fair to senator peters, hes always been a very cautious campaigner, so its not too much of a surprise that hed be cautious on Something Like impeachment. Richard burr joining on onboard the cspan bus this morning as part of our battleground tour. Have time to take a few calls on michigan politics and how this story is playing in michigan and weve set aside a special line for michigan residents. We u want to call in, invite all viewers to call in on hat topic. As folks are calling in, whats your sense . Is this impeachment inquiry story having a big impact outside of the washington, d. C. , bubble and there on the ground in the battleground state . Is a story like the u. A. W. Strike at the g. M. Facilities a more important story in your state right now . Guest well, i think any time you have something that involves the word impeachment, it grabs peoples attention. But to be fair, weve had talks of impeachment for more than two years now. So there may be something of an impeachment fatigue. I would say that the u. A. W. Strike is a little more important at the moment. Were approaching the second of its duration and talks appear to have picked up. But it has emerged as a president ial issue. Weve had at least three democratic president ial candidates who have come here to michigan and visited the picket lines here in michigan and at the Detroit Assembly plant weve had Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren and then yesterday we had Bernie Sanders who flew in for a quick 20minute visit. One of the others who visited viceicket lines was former President Joe Biden in wisconsin. And they all came here saying we want to show our solidarity with the workers, they should be getting more and im not sure how much impact thats really having on negotiations, because. Ats its own kind of dynamic but obviously they felt the need to come in here and show some kind of solidarity with working class voters. Host remind us what originally prompted that strike and what does the length of this strike and the attention its gotten say about the strength of unions heading into the 2020 election and on the ground there in michigan . Guest so purportedly the issue that set off this strike was that workers felt like they should be getting more compensation and that they had made great sacrifices 10 years ago when g. M. Was going through bankruptcy. But im not sure if that was all the reason for this strike, because there wasnt a lot of ferment on the ground here, a lot of complaining prior to the expiration of the contract and g. M. Actually did make a fairly generous offer before the u. A. W. Decided to go on strike. One of the complicating factors here is that theres an ongoing corruption probe by federal agents that has resulted in at least nine u. A. W. And automaker officials pleading guilty to various corruption charges leading to prison sentences. Theyre still ongoing investigations, including the f. B. I. And the i. R. S. Invaded the homes of former president Dennis Williams and current president gary jones. So one of the complicating factors for the strike is that the rank and file may not trust the current leadership. And the current leadership has to show that they would stand up for workers. And anybody who saw this dynamic kind of anticipated that there would be a strike because the leadership has to show in some kind of tangible form that theyre somehow fighting the corporation, whereas former officials have been taking kickbacks and had been dipping into Certain Union funds to enrich themselves and so they have to restore credibility. Host little bit of time left and a lot of callers for you. Raymond in california, cathedral city, california. Democrat, youre up first. Caller hi, good morning. I just want mr. Burr to really use his words carefully. Because he said trump was duly elected. Trump was duly elected by the russians. Ere was a lot of collusion that hi, my name is host we got your comment there. You just have to listen through your phone. Mr. Burr was, was there any sort of response you wanted to give . Guest well, all i can tell you is what was in the special prosecutors report which was the russians attempted to influence the election, everyone has said that they did not change any votes. I mean, as to actually going in and changing votes that were cast in the system, you know, how much russian ads on facebook really influenced people to vote for donald trump over hillary clinton, or jill stein or the libertarian candidate, you know, who knows. Because theres a lot of noise out there on a president ial campaign. But since no voting systems were hacked and nobody has proven that any votes were actually manipulated, and all the votes were certified, i think we just have to accept the fact that President Trump was elected president. Host a lot of noise in a president ial campaign, a lot of attention being lack ofished on the wolverine state and lavished on the wolverine state and its 16 electoral votes up in 2020. 17. 4 million registered voters as of last year in michigan. President trump winning the state with 47. 5 of the vote back in 2016. Battle ground state, again, this cycle. And were focusing on it as part of our battleground tour this morning. Richard burr aboard the cspan bus. Todd is in north carolina. Im sorry, david is in todd, north carolina, an independent. Go ahead. Caller i got a statement, a question and then a statement. When i was in school, they told me that the representative system was set up because not everybody could travel to washington and participate with drafting legislation. Ok. We got unions and my question is , now that we have social media, cant we fire the represent beive system and representative system and do the legislating ourselves with our true consensus on a social media platform that the government should provide already . And ive abouten been asking for town Hall Meetings from each representative for years now, for an hour a month, and none of them are obliging. My comment is theyre fired. Didnt really have a good question. So thank you. Host what did you want to pick up on from there . Guest well, he wants to change the way people are represented in congress. You have to change the constitution, you have to get the consent of quite a bit of more than a majority of the states to do it. I would just note that the republic was set up as a form of Representative Government in which the direct representation of the people was through the house of representatives, kind of a broader form of representation was set up in the senate. You have checks and balances between the executive branch and congress and the judiciary. O any form of direct democracy actually runs counter to the way the founders set up the system. They didnt want what they considered the potential for kind of a mob sentiment to rule the country. If people wanted to go through government, through social media, which is means that it would create the potential for hacking, i think that would be a pretty heavily debated concept. Host a few minutes left with richard burr. Aboard the cspan bus as part of our battleground tour. Hes there in michigan at wing State University in detroit, michigan, this morning, taking your phone calls. We have that special line set aside for michigan residents. 2027488003, though mary is in bridgeport, pennsylvania. A democrat. Good morning. Caller good morning. I really dont have a question. Id like to speak to the american people, both republicans and democrats. I would like to advise them to please listen to what trump says. I mean, the actual substance of what he says. If it isnt about how criminal all democrats are, its about how great he is. And no one group is all anything. He never answers the question. He uses no common sense. I mean, its like listening to gobbledy gook. He has his children in the white house growing salaries and they really have no purpose. His exaggerated ego and narcissistic personality constantly leads needs to be fed by sink paths and if they dont do this, theyre out. Thats the immense turnover in the white house. And his cabinet. The president did break the law by intersecting intercepting the whistleblower complaint which he is not and encouraging the department of justice to bury the complaint. Richard burr, focusing on the politics of this and the battleground state of michigan to michigan state. Geographically, last time what kicked offbasically one of the major counties which tends tog county that lean republican, but is not a slamdunk. He did well in outofstate isnties, an area where there not huge concentrations of people and need to do relatively michigan which has traditionally been an area gaining a little more support and hes got a little bit of an uphill climb to there was a pullback in late may asked ifed voters were trumpould vote to reelect , what would they do . Joe biden has been up about four points since late may and Elizabeth Warren up about four points. Im sure the spreads have changed during that time, but he faces a little bit more of an uphill climb because democrats are much more energized at this time to turn out. They were not as energized in 2016. He did not seem to capture the imagination of enough democrats and allow present trump to , which is less than 10,000. Hollywood florida, republican, good morning. Call. Nk you for taking my i want to say he is doing a great job. Truth. Ocrats hate the go ahead and finish your comment. Say they went crazy. They hate this man. It is very simple. At first, i was surprised to see those numbers. Mike and i were discussing and all of a sudden it made a lot of sense. New mexico has been tremendous help. You people are really out there. Thank you. We are really doing a job with orders, a good job with the military byongest far and were going to keep it we dontand hopefully have to use it.
