This burgeoning building of automobiles in every small town. The demand to be able to open a map and go from place to place was so strong that the government said we are going to start this deal of numbered highways. As theield is known birthplace of route 66. Man namedield had a john t roadworks. He was an absolute genius at marketing and making things happen. He was one of the committee of people pushing for the silent. Highway. They wanted the number to be 60. Then, through politicking with the governor of kentucky, that changedas strange and that number went to another road. John t. Woodruff got together with some of the other people in the committee and came up with the idea of 66. Asking sent a telegram that they be given the number 66. History. Is , iconic inoute 66 music and folklore. We feel like we are the birthplace because the meeting and telegram were sent from our city. How did woodruff get so involved in the establishment. He was a tremendous visionary. His vision was route 66 would go across the country east to west. That was what his longterm thought process was. Would bee country connected with the highway. Now, we are turning onto st. Louis street. An iconicaven is motel. It has been here since 1938 and this is the original sign here. Streeton st. Louis which, has been widened along with everything else. Woodruff was a developer here in the city. Did he benefit from coming through . The built buildings that were alsoicial to the city but with the forward thinking idea of how they would be involved and making the city better, he built the hotel with the idea that it would be a hotel that was very attractive to motorists. Most hotels have very little parking general neller parking. Beautiful front lawn and was a motor hotel. On route 66t right and was ready to be there at motor traffic. They popped up like mushrooms everywhere. They wanted to city to feel like they were part of the highway. They wanted those customers to come from far away to stop and shop in businesses in those communities. Where are we now . Were on college street. Headed out west of the city. This part of the road is a lot more like it was 50, 60 years ago. They are beginning to start to do some updating and so on. Traffic is not as heavy over here. Roadside parkis area. Memorate the over time it will develop into a bigger part. 1982, they commit decommissioned the highway. Eisenhower was dazzled by the autobahns in germany during the war. On the left, is the Historical Marker that designates the area that he built his cabin on. That is why this area is called founders park. His cabin was above the law here above the huge pool of water. We are on jefferson street and here on the right, this is the Frisco Railroad offices that were built here by john t woodruff. Here we are going by the old footbridge, this bridge was built because it was so unsafe to travel. They built this beautiful bridge in 1901 to cross over the track so they can really begin to develop north of the river track. The tracks were a barrier to the north. Bridgeilt that walkover and then some underpasses of the track. It really helped the city developed to the north. Springfield was heavily divided during the civil war. This was a hotbed for the union. There was a lot of conflict here and because of that, after the battle of wilsons creek, springfield was under confederate control until december of that year when the head of general fremonts guard came and took the city back for the union. After that, it was under Union Control but it was under martial law. He brought in people called detectives that kept these. One of those people was wild bill. He was one of the detectives. After the civil war, he stayed on here in springfield. He was a gambler and got into some mischief. A poker game with a man named tut. And over the course of time there relationship disintegrated.
