To move the motion, i call from the northwest of england. Elijah walkman. Thank you, mr. Speaker. The difference between dreams is action. The essence of youth is built to dream, our n resolve to strive and everlasting effort to overcome trials that society often tells us no, you cant. Experience by convention is hat of which the gap between education and the work. What if i told you that the only broken by onvention misguided opportunity . Failed dreams. Our young o tell people to never look beyond the life youve been given. 65 of employers leave Work Experience to be a trait, and onlyfor employment 13 are willing to offer it, surely, something has to change. In 2012, we were told as young people that because of the no ol you attend, there was obligation to offer Work Experience. Those words, an nequality of opportunity only persists. We should no longer have to say we live in a time where our defined by where were from. And especially by an education ystem that has failed the many talents of generations that came before us. Actions today, we can break that cycle. Im from, my home in manchester, i remember growing friends, we dreamt that we could be doctors. That we could be lawyers. And so even astronauts. Critical ough this phase of high school that raises for a drive to achieve and a society e live in that has little to no expectations of what we can go on to be. To oppose the motion, please midlands. Om the east [applause] thank you, mr. Speaker. Elijah. Nks Work Experience changed my life. The phrase that we would love to hear. Here not to campaign against Work Experience. Campaign for better Work Experience. Lets be honest. Work experience, as it stands, is pretty pathetic. Our Current System of Work Experience is everything but to be. Want it who need to be inspired, to be challenged and to have their eyes opened up to world full of possibilities. Sadly, Work Experience as it stands produces dissatisfied, disillusioned and disinterested youth. Each coming out with only negative. Want to make tea and coffee ever again. Or some may say i never, ever want to work in retail. Does this sound familiar . Providing quality experiences in sciences, ields of arts and technology will inspire an entire generation. We are the youth of today who have big dreams and high who have been let down by poor Work Experience. Into being tea boys and tea girls all under the big fat banner of Work Experience. Heres something to think about. Evealed by the department of educations recent consultation, institute,by the work we still dont know what Effective Practice in Work Experience looks like. Which begs the question who is current Work Experience is actually beneficial . So mr. Speaker, all those to ening today, we need reevaluate our ideas of Work Experience. And hink about our visions what we want Work Experience to look like. This will take time. Quality research and it requires the collaboration of many different organizations. This Research Needs to be done. We can sayfter this, yes. This Work Experience works. Only after this we can campaign for Work Experience enhances our education and development. Riends, we need to offer standardized Work Experience where you are across very disciplines experiencing what one profession from multiple professions. So my argument today is not to campaign against Work Experience. But before we take the steps us take a g, let moment to reflect on our practice. A moment to step back and improve the quality of Work Experience. Let us create a future where we pioneers. To be a future. Work will allow us to say, experience changed my life. Thank you. [applause] thank you. Thank you for that excellent speech. Id like to hear, if possible, a speaker from scotland. Scotland . Have from this young man was first. Lets hear you, sir. Thank you, mr. Speaker. From the region of scotland five. It is not the case is it not the case that make and break up toment all is possible and including Work Experience hubs and curriculum for life. Note, theres been points made whether were educated enough. Mr. Speaker would people are just as as making decisions as the youth. Note, theres been cynicism just because we are filibustered does not mean that wrong side of history. We are on the right side of history. Did they give up when they were laughed at in parliament . On the right side of history. Affirm yourself in that belief. We need to unite as one Youth Parliament. One last time. And give it one more push see the change that we want to see in the world. Lets let the government know generation that will give in and accept their demands and let the government generation are the that will not waiver when making ours. Thank you. Thank you. Ok. Thank you very much indeed. For speaking from head and heart alike. Speeches on Work Experience hubs and on this occasion, i think from oking for a speaker wales . Who have we got from wales . Yes, the young woman in the le with the oh, sorry. Yeah. My we need to ensure that the of today are prepared individuals. To achieve this, it is necessary hat Work Experience is acceptable for people from all socioeconomic backgrounds. In my days, the best Work Experience are those with connections and those whose work for a Large Company and those whose family members are adopted and we say longer be. Hould no by having the government intervene and provide Work Experience hubs it ensures those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have equal achieve their aims. 2 3 of employers say that they they want individuals with Work Experience as a company. O their the youth of today toont have Work Experience, how are we going to get hired for the jobs that we need . Richer g all from backgrounds and having the Work Experiences, it means there would not be equality. So for equality and for pportunity, i urge you all to support this motion and put Work Experience as most important. Thank you. [applause] now, earlier, my friends, i entioned to you that we had been visited by the clark assistant and were now joined of the house, the senior procedural official in the house of commons, clerk of house se and head of the Service Within my work every day and has worked in this place for over four decades and is hugely respected. David narsler. David, thank you for your interest and support. Representative from yorkshire and wow, what an xtraordinary level of excitement. I think were going to take the young woman in the pale blue dress and yeah. Thank you so much, mr. Speaker. Im a member of the Youth Parliament and currently, you could attend the school where you receive all the help in the world to get good Work Experience placement. Attend a school where you sooif no help whatsoever. N the country where we believe in equal opportunities for all, i ask you to this, mr. Speaker. Justified . S be we cannot underestimate the good work of one experience placement from one placement, a youth could be more likely to get into a university not because theyre studentdeserving than a without that placement but because they may have had more help to get that. I recommend that students in their first choice of university didnt have that Work Experience placement. Im here representing all the whose voices need to be heard. Will creatence hubs a Better Society where someones background does not affect their achieve in life. This is the United Kingdom that i want to live in. Thank you. [applause] thank you. Got from o do we london . This gentleman from london is in uncontrollable excitement although i dont think hell need the telephone in order to make his iteration. Forward to hearing from him. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Im a member of parliament for london. Quickly dedicate a spaech to a very close friend of mine who died like a month ago. Hen i campaigned to be m. I. P. Just a year ago, a number of especially the community and i bet a lot of young people so the young the young person in particular that stood out. Me. Ants to speak to he says to me he said specifically that he was being at school. Why . Because he was kurdish. All the kurdish families in as a stituency have come iraq or om fleeing their country. Bullied and attacked constantly, every single day. Now, i know this topic means a lot. I know this topic means a lot to a lot of young people. Theyre my constituents and my topic was in this the relevant s much more if we vote for a topic that vote cover a muchwe can broader spectrum of issues which would help all young people. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much indeed. For that contribution. Call somebody from the West Midlands which im keen me moment to do, let welcome to enjoy and support our proceedings my colleague, labor member of parliament from parry barr. Thank you for your interest and support. Who do we have from the west that wishes to all right. Yes. Enthusiastic. The young woman here in the second row. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Will show you thats not important. So yes. Talking about Work Experience 11 to 18yearolds and we are between young people and the world of work. The statistics regarding this havehe 86 of young people had four or more encounters with employers that have been in life. D therefore, Work Experience is something that should be integrated into a high quality Career Education Program Within all schools throughout the u. K. Critical to make it an issue as the current, fragmented Career Education across the country is detrimental to the youth of today as they do not have the experience to comment their educational skills. It is critical for parliament to make this a primary issue. We will see a change in the next 12 months. Thank you. [applause] thank you. Im looking to call a speaker from Northern Ireland. Who do we have . If youve already spoken, i think probably not the second time because some people dont speak at all. Does this person want to speak . Not on this debate . All right, i said Northern Ireland. So be it. Keep it brief. Thank you, mr. Speaker. We have a system in Northern Ireland which is very much like this. And i am confident it helps most people, but theres still an ongoing publicity problem. Some young people do not even know it exists. I know for a fact this is beneficial to young people to help advancements in their careers and dreams. It gives them a taste of their future and gives them help in upcoming decisions. I would love to see people in other parts of the u. K. Have the same opportunities as i will. I find it appalling that is being overlooked in a crucial system that has stood by us from our early days. I cant help but feel the young people of england have been let down by past governments to be provide a hub such as we have and the one we are considering today. Please make Work Experience one of your topics. [applause] thank you very much. Now, what about the east of england . Weve not heard from the east of england. The young gentleman here holding up his sweater. A fashionable accessory and a demonstration of his interest. Lets hear from you. A couple of years ago, i had the privilege of doing some Work Experience in my local counsel with the chief executive, and if it wasnt for the campaign of takeover day, i would not have had that opportunity. In norfolk, we have something called help you choose which is an online hub to give young get young people to apply for things like college and Work Experience and apprenticeships. We put all the information there. It changed my perspective on the workplace and its made me feel it more involved in the workplace. It has allowed me to have the opportunities that i have today to be speaking to you in the house of parliament. House of commons and however commons. However, i think it is important to acknowledge that not everyone has this privilege, to have the opportunities i had, to work with the local council and work in the chief executives, sit in on meetings, count ballots, things like that. We havent all had that experience. I would like to also send us his say that we can still fight for votes at 16, we can still fight for lgbtplus rights. Just remember, this is something on the side. Thank you. [applause] thank you. Just before i call a representative from the southeast of england please , welcome a member of parliament from the southeast. The conservative member of parliament for backing them buckingham, who is standing immediately to my right and waving ostentatiously. [applause] bob has a very distinguished track record in the army. He served in many theaters on a very high level. He has experiences that most of us probably, thankfully, will never have. He has been a brave soldier for this country. It is a pleasure to have you with us. Thank you for your support. I think i was going to hear next from the southeast of england. There are two people who have been just a deleting for a while get stipulating been g esticulating for a while. Im going to call the young woman here. Thank you. Today we live in a society where 50 of people do not take a degree they have been studying on to what they do working. Young people, more than often, have little to no experience working in areas they want to have a career. Teens are stuck with no clue of what to choose because they dont know where they would be subject to take them. This is in a society where all but a few are left unguided and uncertain and decision that will make a great shape on the rest of their lives. I believe strongly the government has a duty to its young people, that we have a duty to our young people, constituents to give all young , people an opportunity to explore future options, to test their passions, and find out how they want to spend their working years. For the sake of a more passionate and prepared generation of young people, i urge you to vote for this motion. And in turn, not only will we see more individuals from more backgrounds reaping rewards, but our economy will reap rewards, too. It will benefit the u. K. Societally and economically. [applause] thank you very much, indeed. What about a speaker from im going to call a speaker from the northeast of england. You were trying earlier. Just hold on. Im going to call you in a moment. Take a seat for a moment. Orationyourself or your for your operation. I want to welcome my parliamentary colleague and the chair of the work and Pension Select Committee of the house, the right honorable , without interruption since 1979, 38 years, a member of parliament. Widely recognized, members of the Youth Parliament, across the house and in many parts of our country, as what people want a member of element to be, which is a principled and fearless after and speaker for truth. [applause] for decades, he has campaigned against low pay and child poverty. Hes a specialist in Social Security policy, pension policy. He has forgotten more about pensions policy than i have ever known. He is truly an outstanding representative. He has never been scared of anybody or anything. It is a standard that perhaps you should aspire to attain. Thank you for your support for the parliament. [applause] what about our friend from the northeast . Plenty of time to prepare. We really look forward to hearing what you have to say. Speaker, the idea of Work Experience hubs seems so ideal and in bettering our journey to further our education or work. How can we possibly prioritize this motion if the basic foundations of our Educational Institution are not yet built . Before we can work on the advancements of our education, we must ensure every single young person in the u. K. Is guaranteed a basic, fair, and unbiased curriculum to prepare us for life. Thank you. [applause] northwest of england. Who do we have from the northwest . The gentleman waving second from , the end. Red tie, white piece of paper in his hand. We are grateful to you, sir. Thank you, mr. Speaker. About workention experience, because i know someone who had the opportunity to do Work Experience in the united nations. Thats an opportunity i bet many people did not know existed. They didnt know where to get Work Experience. It is so heartbreaking when people dont know where to get Work Experience. Imagine if we had the opportunity for people to put on work explains online and someone could go find the opportunity. Imagine that. Wouldnt that be equality of opportunity . Thank you. [applause] thank you. Frank. Ou, cheers. What about the east midlands . The east midlands . Who have we got . Yes. What about the young gentleman at the end . Yourself . Thank you, mr. Speaker. The key to this motion is experience. Experience to learn in a different environment. Experience to explore new ideas and experience to fail. This is why i have to go against this motion. We live in a world of opportunities. The foundations that allow all people to have a chance to succeed. As your people, we will be the future bankers, lawyers, and leaders of the future. However, it seems to me that we have grown lazy. That life is going to be easy but , its not. As Sylvester Stallone said in rocky, nobody is going to hit you as hard as life, but its not about how hard you get hit, its about how you get up and stand up and move forward. We have been given the foundation of life to shape our future the way we want it. Sure, it will be hard and difficult, but that is good experience. Life isnt always about sunshine and rainbows. It is only through failure we can really call ourselves a success. Life is a teacher. It beats us down, but we learn from it. We learn from our mistakes. We improve ourselves to be a better self. Work experience take this away from us. We need to understand the tough realities of rejection and have the tenacity to get up, work hard, and achieve. [applause] thank you. From the southwest of england. Im going to call the young woman in the very back row with the gray, i think its gray, jacket and the dark blue dress. Thank you. Thank you, mr. Speaker. It is a great honor to represent west wilshire in the southwest. I ask one question. Why are we, at present, making little effort to Network Across the country to aid both young people and companies . With this motion, young people would be able to access applications for Work Experience easily and not do unnecessary research. This creates a Mutual Benefit by racing the raising the access to and princess ships apprenticeships. You must take into account that this could offer lifechanging opportunities for those who have never had the chance to develop life skills. Reaching real constituents not , just young people from the cities. We can make a difference by supporting this motion and injecting a sense of passion into what really matters in life. [applause] thank you. Soon, i will call the concluding speaker from Northern Ireland. However, before we get to that, elijah made a superb speech. But elijah hadnt actually finished his speech. Hes restored to full vigor and we are delighted by that and he is going to finish his speech. Continue the remainder of your speech. Mr. Speaker, it is very true what he said. It isnt about how hard you hit, its about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. Thank you for those words. [applause] never tie your tie too tightly. Ok, i will start again. The difference between dreams and reality is action. It is the essence of youth, built upon our passion to dream, our resolve to strive, and everlasting effort to overcome our trials in a society that often tells us know no, you cant. Work experience is there to bridge the gap between education and the world of work. But what if i told you that is only the echo of the convention broken by misguided opportunity, failed dreams, and the means to tell our young people to never look beyond the life youve been given. So, when 65 of employers believe Work Experience a trade to be a trait critical for employment and only 30 are willing to offer it, surely, something has to change. In 2012, we were told as young people that, because of the school we attend there was no , obligation for Work Experience and inequality of opportunity only persists. We should no longer have to say we live in a society where we are defined by where we live, what our parents earn, and especially by an Education System that has failed the many generations that have come before us. In our actions today, we can break the cycle. Im sorry, but where im from, my home, manchester, i remember growing up with my friends. We dreamt that we could be doctors, that we could be lawyers. There was even one who believed they could be an astronaut. Yet it was found through this critical phase of high school that the aspirations wavered to realizing we live in a society that has little to no what we as young people could go on to be. How can we expect the many young people really on these walls today to maintain expectations for themselves . I was once told that a postcode should never have to dictate potential. With those words, i stand with before you today with a belief. I believe that a young person in the streets deserves the same exact opportunity for the young eton. Om eaten i believe that the young person from westminster deserves the same opportunity. I believe the young person who feels isolated in this country deserves the exact same opportunity as a young person from we are told as young people that we are the future. Yet what value does any of that carry when a selfproclaimed title, such as the United Kingdom, has left the opportunities of so many young people divided. Allow me to say that once more. If we are a United Kingdom then , why have we divided our young people by opportunity . [applause] i look to all of you today, and i tell you, let us be remembered s to show thismyp country that, in the 21st century, we should no longer have to be defined simply where we are from. Eyes, we allo your have a future to aspire to. Let us be remembered as the myps who can say we made our mark. And most importantly, let us be remembered as the young people we are. Experiencepass work hubs for the young people of this country. I thank you all. [applause] mr. Speaker elijah, thank you for your sincerity, for your eloquence, for your passion. And indeed, thank you for your courage. You are the spirit of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament. [applause] mr. Speaker colleagues, to conclude the debate, welcome from north ireland, jenny iredell. Thank you, mr. Speaker. I also thank elijah for the arguments and those who argued against the implementation of Work Experience. I think i speak for everybody in this room when i say, elijah, you are amazing and we are also all so proud of you. [applause] following the governments review of Vocational Education in 2012, the onus upon schools to arrange work replacements placements was removed. Instead, a higher focus was placed on on 16 to 19yearolds, whom the department of education expects schools to offer appropriate Work Experience for as part of their study programs. In regards to the arguments put forward by my honorable friends, should opportunities be limited to higherlevel placements or is it more realistic to allow placements to cater to other roles . What do you aspire to be a hairdresser, builder, or surgeon, should all roles not be considered if we desire to be fully inclusive . Secondly, is the reality of entering the workplace being given immediate autonomy and responsibility, or is it photocopying and shelf stocking with a gradual progression . One could argue that, yes, photocopying and filing are extremely mundane and an expiring and uninspiring. But they are sometimes necessary and the reality of so many workplaces. It screams double standards regarding what employers want and what is available to young people. Employers desire soft skills, like communication, initiative and teamwork. ,skills are necessary for us to succeed in the modern workplace. You can only learn and develop these life skills when you have the opportunity to grow by experiencing new challenges and new opportunities outside the school environment. With the government establishing education business partnerships, with over 173 businesses 173,000 businesses offering work placements, still there is no direct access portal for young people. I was luckily accepted last summer into a work placement with bbc belfast. , and i knowg cliche it is it changed everything for , me. My dreams. My path. My goal. Everything. My Work Experienced worked. But this regrettably is not the case for so many young people. So, what isnt working . We need to give young people a stepping stone to bridge the wide gap between education and employment. We cant ignore the fact that between april and june of this year, there were over 790,000 young people not in employment, training, or education. In fact, 90 of these young people had had some form of Work Experience. So many young people are leaving education completely disconnected from the reality of the world around them and the reality of the workplace. This motion seeks to improve accessibility. But is that the real problem . Or is it instead that the quality of Work Experience is lacking . I think the figures speak for themselves. Although positive steps, we have still many thousands of young people struggling to find placements. So, whether making the tea is indeed your cup of tea or you wish to immerse yourself in a world of test tubes and electro microscopes, the question is should the government follow my government of Northern Ireland and establish an easily accessible online employer hub that enables young people to search for Work Experience opportunities and apply directly . That, my honorable friends, is your decision. Thank you. [applause] mr. Speaker thank you, jenny, for that first class conclusion to our debate. Order. Order. That concludes the morning session of our sitting. The Youth Parliament will now adjourn until 1 45 p. M. Friends and colleagues, i invite you all to return to Westminster Hall for lunch. Order. Order. [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2018] [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org] the Youth Parliament will now consider the fourth motion of the day, transport. The full motion is printed on the order paper. To move the motion, i call from yorkshire, brandon.
