From virginia, students from Purdue University joining us. Theressman let me set up politics of 1980. You ran in the primary. You lost to ronald reagan. You ran as an independent in the general election. Why . I felt strongly that the point of view i represented in the Republican Party, even though it was at odds with many of my fellow party members, represented the kind of views that ought to be brought to the country. And considered in the National Debate about our future. We have a lot of student questions. The first question from the washington center, then we will go to Purdue University and george Mason University. Us, mr. You for joining anderson. In 1980, carter refused to participate in the first president ial debate once he got that you were not invited. Offend you in anyway, or were you more excited and saw it as an opportunity to gain popularity . I was not offended. The excuse he gave was that he would be debating to republicans. Two against one would put him in an inferior position, and it would be unfair. And of course, i took great exception to that definition of that ofdacy being simply another republican. I had distinctly different views on those held by ronald reagan. And they were on important issues to be brought to bear in the minds of the electorate. As a kind his remark of gratuitous insult. To another moment in the debate in the primary. We are going to take a question first. Good afternoon, mr. Anderson. As we saw in your campaign ad, gerald ford said he is the smartest die in congress but insists on voting his conscience instead of party. You feel further alienation from the party as a result to run for president in 1980 . Yes. I supposed to some degree that was true. I had the feeling that having opposed the nominee of the party, and going through the campaign that i probably would , and i had myd own set of issues that were not the same issues at that time that the Republican Party was willing to advance. So, i did feel a certain sense of alienation or estrangement. But i have gone that independent route ever cents. George Mason University in fairfax, virginia. My question is, if you could go back what would you have changed about how you ran your campaign for president . How would i have changed my campaign . I sometimes think that the name we selected of National Unity party could have been improved upon. As if it was aed new Church Denomination rather than a political party. I dont know that i wouldve done things differently from the weight we conducted the campaign. Most of our time and energy and money had to be spent for a very long time, and simply getting on the ballot, Ballot Access was the number one problem because of the restricted laws of at one time i remember we had lawsuits tending in nine different courts around the country. All the way tos the United States Supreme Court, the secretary of state of ohio. They had passed a law that said i could not be on the ballot because i did not declare my independent candidacy earlier enough in the year. And that there simply was not time to get my name on the ballot. That case went all the way to the Supreme Court. Decision written by now retired member of the court John Paul Stevens i won the case retroactively. They said it was perfectly proper that i be admitted to the ballot, and be considered as a candidate for the presidency. Let me follow up. We talk so much about third party politics. In 1990 two your complaint about getting on the ballot was the same that ross perot faced, spending 50 million to get his name on the ballot across the country. What does this tell you about the state of the twoparty system in american politics and the role of third parties in our system . Put it is in aly country like ours we certainly should be broadminded enough to entertain the idea that to simply ordain that there should only be two parties, and that the debate on National Issues should be conducted between the republicans and the democrats is not the kind of spacious democracy that i think our forefathers had in mind when they laid the foundations of this country to begin with. Of avery restrictive view being launchedr in evitable he and forever in two parties, i think is an offense to the true spirit of democracy.
