What does that have to do with women rights or the negro rights . Court, wouldnt it be nice to have my half measure . Thanks. Applause]d that little man in the black says women cannot have as many rights because christ was not a woman. Where did your price come from . Woman . D and a [cheers] the first woman got ever creative was Strong Enough to turn the whole world upside down then we should be able to turn it back and get it right side up again. Church welcome. Welcome to the Sojourner Truth aint i a woman lunch. Before we get started i would just like to thank all the locally elected women in the house. His congresswoman Brenda Lawrence . Electedre a local woman, can you stand please . Applause]d that is whats up. This is not security. [laughter] you want to introduce herself . I am with tv one. I am certainly glad to be here. I was talking about this on tv yesterday, they asked why would you go to the National Convention . I said were out of 3000 women are i have no problem be in there. I said why are you scared to be there . We did not coordinate our outfits. It is Tracee Ellis Ross from jcpenney, i know. Given up. It will be available november us andcy was down for she is going to support this. Another thing, you can also porter. , we know ialendars am a fashionista first. Are we do with the commercial . The orange because my astros are up against the dodgers. Alright then. As a abolitionist we can get back to the script. As a abolitionist she made her way from new york to ohio and eventually made up to detroit. Find thee slaves could freedom in canada. She eventually went to ground in inchigan where she lived battle creek. That is where she is buried, we want to have a moment of silence for her. Please come about your head for a moment of silence. Thank you very much. You did that very well. Isnt he good . Have michiganto congresswoman . Applause]d good afternoon to every fabulous person in this room that came from all over the country. Applause]n it is so great to be with you. To be able to well come to theds of women straight state of michigan. [applause] you are going to notice my voice is a little whatever. Factall of you here at my no one will ever let me be voiceless. I want to thank everybody who made today such a success. To the local Host Committee we all know how much work goes into Something Like this. We need to thank every Single Person who made this what it is today. [applause] i need to say what more thing before i get to the crux of my message. I want to give a special message to my congressional colleagues, the fearless and formidable congresswoman Maxine Waters. Applause]d i can tell you how lucky i am to be able to learn from her. There is no one, no one more orling to call it like it is speak truth to power. [applause] i would like to make a few observations as we begin this lunch session. A importantly weekend for all of us. Together, we came women from all over the country and all around the world. Voice we arene here, we are united, we are going to be heard. Now it is that time to be smart and take that energy that we had in january and turn it into action with results. [applause] our power comes from coming together. Age, race and background, the young and the seniors working mothers and stayathome mothers. People who marched for the first time and people who have been marching for progress all their life. They came together to stand up for the comment of use we all share. Inclusion, quality, values that make up the foundation of this nation. [applause] since january women in this room and thousands more across the country have been strategizing, planning, educating, and mobilizing for progress. We are going to keep marching forward because our values are on our minds. We need to be scared. The progress of those who went before us are now on the line. [applause] unfortunately there is so many issues to talk about, i am going to talk about violence against women because it is a issue i have been really talking about a lot lately. It is one we have to shine a light on. We talk about this internationally and we talk about what is happening in these other countries. America has nothing to be proud of, we still have a significant problem. [applause] sadly as more and more women come over to share their stories of Sexual Assault and harassment many think this is a watershed moment. Point of unacceptable behavior of men towards women. Regrettably i find the anger and i of me building cant squelch down for a long time. I am skeptical i have to tell here fore real changes women a community in this country. Applause butor the we really need to talk about this issue. I wonder who voted for the expulsion of mr. Harvey to firen are moving them or put them on leave for the job are themselves responsible for unacceptable behavior. [applause] eye when a blind woman they knew was being treated despicably. Predators, abusers, manipulators have been around especially against women since the beginning of time. For too long if reporting it made me a troublemaker, how do we change things for working women di . I am going to be short because we need to get on with the program. We need to worry about title nine. [applause] as taking us backwards the victim is not the problem the accuser is the problem. Applause]d in this environment of increased realness how do we make change for women everywhere . That is what this gathering is about. I do not have all of the answers but i know we have to have every s back. Somebody who is working at a andness and we target that they go out of business, where are the jobs . It starts with us in the room. Get the women who came before us, knock on doors, raise consciousness, we too have a responsibility to our daughters and our granddaughters and women everywhere to not be complacent. And applause] women need to report women support women. One woman success as a success for all of us. Celebrate each other. Applause]d our voices are the most powerful tool we have to bring about change. Strong, our voices are they are mighty and they are impossible to ignore. Thank you. [cheers and applause] given up for congresswoman debbie dingell. Someone asked the question why would a man support a womans march . National convention three of this is used to organize this note the story because they are here. There is the anniversary of the million man march. I was interviewing her. Finish withly the interview and i said you are going to get a series of phone calls from a Television Show and radio show. Is you haveor that been doing the work that other folks have been talking. I said to the three of them no matter what platform i have, i will put you on those platforms for whatever it is you are organizing. So what they have been doing with the new justice league, i say that because it does not matter if you are a man you have to use your platform for good. [applause] the good whenever they call i say we will do it. There is time on the morning show. That matters because you do not change a system if you are unwilling to stand with others to do so. That is the case. You know there are always haters. If you are not putting in the just talking and tweeting. If you are putting and the work you do not have time to talk and sweet. Some folks want to stop hating and put the work in. , which introduce our panel. March national cochair, given up. Donna perez. [applause] give it up. [applause] you have the purple and gold colors on, i see you. Him because the astros beat the yankees. [applause] she is the associate professor at oakland university, kelly hayes. [applause] time to go to work. I am a black woman i have been at work for generations. [laughter] [applause] i just want to take a moment, you touched on something. When they called we say yes. I am looking at you. That is my girl right there. I just want to start and grow myself in the sisterhood before i get started talking. I did not know what i was going to do. I just knew i would be cute and show up. What this is and how this works. I thank you. I think linda and carmen. You all brought me into this fold, that is it. Sister yall. [applause] i am going to start with a sister. It is very important that we in the d. That we are , that opening open by heart. We recognize where we are paid what has happened on this ground, can you start us off by grounding us in where we are. What your life is like in with your work is like in this moment . We were raised right. At least i was. Good afternoon everyone. [cheers and applause] i am loving the energy. It is really a honor to speak. Detroit is just a special place. There are things that happen in detroit that do not get lifted up. Wheret is really a place we really have deep relationships and that is so important for us as we think about what this conference is about and where it the power of this conference can go. City. Tthe motor. Etroitmotown a numberhere we have of spiritual leaders. Unique not necessarily but it is part of our network of power. Detroit where we had Coleman Young our first black mayor. [laughter] [applause] renaissance ofa bringing africanamerican people with showingip their competency. Detroit has led in so many ways. Really big handle on what it looks like in terms of dealing with white supremacy. As we look at this space we also need to look at who is not seen work aroundoing water which is a global issue. Detroit has the leadership of that because we have 20 of the fresh water. There is a move to privatize water and you are participating in that every time you buy bottled water. Water is seen as a mindsety, there is this that water can be part and it is not free. Water is life, we and detroit want to make sure you understand. [applause] detroit, i want to say it was rosa parks home after she left montgomery, alabama. I have the privilege of being with her for being with her for 33 years. One of the thank i want to lift was veryt she dedicated to the city. Arrested i think it is very appropriate for this audience when she was theoached to be arrested police said she was going to be arrested because she did not give up her seat. She looked at them and said you may do so in a soft voice. She gave them permission to arrest restaurant, that is power. [applause] bit . N i pivoted a little she said why are you treating us this way. She said why are you treating us this way. This fromot look at the standpoint of we it is not going to happen. As long as we are going forth with me we would not have the power that we get from the we. That is what was important to impart today for you. [applause] i wanted her to pass them on the white panel said white supremacy. Of the women of color in a womens march we see you all making room. Yesterday isabout that there was a panel teaching white women how to be good white , i am going to give you a hand on wanting to come and do the work. Important that you learn and therethis work have been women of color across the centuries doing this work and we have great blueprints about how to do it. It is time we share and teach that practice. Can you talk a little bit about you areition in that and seeing a woman of color in this moment in the spotlight and what it looks like to make that room . I just want to say hello everyone. What is going on . Are we excited to be here . [applause] i want to go back one second. You said we have to talk about i just wanted to boggs becausey that is what we are waiting for. No one is waiting to save us. Aboutards to your bastion being a woman of color in this space at this time. I have been organizing for 23 years in different communities around criminalreform and working inside prisons with our young people. I was doing piecework, i think every time that i went into goal ories my biggest outcome was to listen to the community. A press is what could bring others along. Did you are the things we his we entered different communities for the local people to actually sustain this work. There are moments when we talk about being at the table. Some of us have to build the table. We have to measure and get all of that stuff. Isre are moments where there not room for us. Peoplere moments where do not see their liberation and our liberation. Organizing with the womans justice a areinal completely different. Miles for nine days from new york city to washington dc bringing attention to those who have been killed particular black people who have been hands of police. There was nobody funding the work we did. When it came to what happened wasr november everybody putting and their money to make sure they were going to be part of the conversation. I see a discrepancy and i see this disconnect. I also see a disconnect when women of color are desperate. We are talking about being intentional, intersectional and inclusive. My feminism is inclusive. It is intersectional. It also includes men. [applause] not mean that i dont respect your feminism but if it does not include muslim women, undocumented people, if it does not include lgbt people. Then i do not want to be part of your feminism. We have been working for the years i stand on the shoulders of women who have gone before me. People like a professor at Santa Barbara who what feminism was. People like harry everynte who teaches me single day that working towards our people need to be divisive and are part of the enemy. Get trolled on social media because we want to include certain people in the program you aret told that erasing my existence. Exceptional, i did not know the label of feminism until i went to college. I would hope that people build this fourth wave of feminism. There has been the first wave, the second wave, other ways, maybe we are on the fifth i dont know. We have seen all the waves. I hope that you understand with have to be we have to be inclusive. We have together more information. The womansnized march we knew it was about attacking one person. It was about attacking the forces of evil. We are doing a turn. He is going to exit because people voted for him. To make a agenda, that is what we are here for. It is to make sure we build collective power so we can Win Back Congress in 2018. So that we can win our local elections so that we have people seeting for the issues to what we saw ons intersection analogy. Thank you. If you censor women of color then we bring everybody with us. Dnc. Talking to the [applause] if you center women of color we bring everybody with us. Really talk a community that is with this fight. I am practicing how to be in with where we just got here, you should know. Let them learn from us, we have to learn quick. That is what i am saying. We dont have time. You must listen and trust women. Trust us because we have been through all of it. [cheers and applause] with a little of the work you are doing, how can we help you help this movement . I would not have anywhere to do if there was not for a woman out there. [cheers and applause] the work that we are doing is woman and a hiphop collective. To practice art and politics with women doing Community Work are doing politics. We are not known for doing politics. Been better why women need to listen. We speak first, we want to help and we dont know what we are trying to help. One of the things that i would womano share is from a who wrote a book a long time ago. Women do not see them as brothers. Black women and men see themselves and a community because of all the other intersectional forces. We do not have to face that unless we choose to. If you all do not know the word intersection analogy we are not just one thing. With our national affiliations, or gender and sexuality. All of that makes us who we are. That is not who we are. We are complex, fluid creatures. As those creatures we have to reach for each other and that is what we learn with the women in the foundation that do have politics. They do hiphop politics and gentrificationt [applause] about the white plate coming back and buying of a town. Condition that they create for themselves that the rest of us dont have. 80 of the population of detroit is black and yet who owns to try . Who controls to try . The water and the distribution of resources, the police, not enough good people. Solidarity with weinism, when that happens are in silos. Thank you. [applause] i just have to say she is my girl too. I think you for a what you have done and what you are doing. I dont even have to ask you a you are sitting here as the loan brother. What does this feel like . Just tell us from your heart what is standing and this moment feel like . Thank you all for allowing me to be able to sit up. [applause] i am honored and humbled to be in this room. I said i did not know if i was as ay, let me just say dude i am a feminist. [applause] in terms of what i feel at this moment, my twoparent household consisted of my mother and my grandmother. When i was very young my grandmother said something to me. I did not understand it at the time. , oneas a beautiful woman day she came home and she said meet doesy woman you not want you to be your boyfriend. Lament what you to support them and stand for them. [applause] she said every relationship you have will be romantic or sexual. I internalized that. I look back at some of the things we are hearing in the news today. Grandmother probably experience what was commonplace. Bit ofas always been a harassment. She came from a time when you could not talk about that. She said to me out of the blue and i never forgot this. Wheni feel at this moment i have the honor of being the first to step to the microphone. I feel that feeling now. With a whole gender coming together. I want to thank especially all of the white women who are here. I went to confronting white womanhood discussion yesterday. I have never seen women talk openly about profiling of black men. They acknowledge that you clutched your purse when you saw me. Thingas a very powerful for me to see. Lastly, let me just say, in terms of intersection analogy what we are witnessing, i have to be careful. This sexuale have assault scorecard going on. Somebody every day. It is deeper than that. This did not start in hollywood. This is where the unity and intersection analogy comes from. America has always been about Sexual Assault. When they first stepped off the boat here. [cheers and applause] through my family. When slavery guthrie, the white man turned on his own sister. [inaudible] [applause] [cheers] that man being on the panel, give it up for my man. Give it up for the rest of the panelists. Another round of applause for that panel. [applause] those we are honoring this afternoon. Beloved aunties. That e do [laughter] where are you . Come on through. I was starting to like a fire for you. Do thek you because you work and do it big. Oh my goodness, good afternoon. Im stephanie, it is a honor to be here with you today. Before i get going, we did this earlier. Of the women who are currently serving in office council, county commission cannot stand up. Anybody who is currentlys serving in office, i would like you to be recognized. Keep standing. [applause] these are our heroes right here i. All of those women of their. I know you are out there who are planning on running for office to stand up. Candidates for office right now. Stand up. These are the women that our leading us right now. They need our support. We have to support each and every one of them today. Thank you for running. Thank you for standing up for us. Thank you so much. [applause] for being brave. We know one thing. The most courageous things you can do and a democracy is run for office it is for the rest of us to have these limits back, we will be there for you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Here to share a little bit of news with you. This is extraordinary. The state organizations are attorney, the Energy Physics for an. I want to share one other things. I always get a emotional talking about this, bear with me. Not a highection point. It hurts. I am not going to get into that because we are moving on. What i want to say is i was not so sure what was going to happen. Country i across the should have known better. We started getting cold calls from women all across the country in november. Saying that they wanted to run for office. I have to tell you this is very unusual in november of the election year. To have women called in and say they want to run for office. We had a junior staffer. She said this is interesting. She found this link that you have that you have to click through three times to get through. Said i may be interested in running for office, will you tell me what there is a local training. Four weeks after the election 1000 women had clicked that link. [applause] ok. We are getting it. We have some energy going on. When all of you and the incredible organizers of the march put together that moment in our history in january, we do aht lets see if we can training and see what happens. For 500 the day after the march in washington dc. , can we shrink the walls in case that many did not show up, not only did 500 women come. There were new a 500 women on the waiting list to get into that office to run. So, we made a challenge and put it out there that said women of america you have to choices. To see how this is going to work. We put this up on our website. I am here to tell you today that all of you in this room have put it over a milestone because i am 28ud to say as of this week Million People have raised their hand and said they want to run for office. The directionge of my community and country. [applause] that is the power of this room and everything that you have done. It is a extraordinary moment. Imsa and everyone will run in 2018. What i am saying is the next decade of leaders have raised have said we have to go to new places and together we will do that. We have extended our organization and tripled the size of our staff made we made sure there was room, we are going to be did training right in this building. We have to win. I ask you to join with them every step of the way. I do believe, i do believe that the next elizabeth warren, the next kamala harris, Maggie Hassan and Maxine Waters are in this pool of candidates. We have to make sure they went. When they do, together we are going to elect a historic number of women into our legislature, our city council and we will take back the United States house of representatives with this outrageous republican party. Donald trump, we are coming for you next. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. [applause] lets hear it for women blowing up walls. Walls in her own office. 20,000 i got goosebumps with those numbers. My moment. O back to you for beinged brave. Nd woke andit a unafraid. Tos is personal, i am going do more later. From day one im going to look right at you. There was one person out there swinging for us every single day. You are not being talked about on the news. You are not being talked about on the panel when everyone was like where are the people i said there she is. A whole bunch of women specifically sisters lifted you instagram, sheon is our hero. She is a rock star. Dnc dont see you, we see you. Cheering and applause] you unapologetically admitted there that i am a black woman who has been through this. I am not afraid of any of you all. Us, you centered us and i thank you for that. We have been in the margins for so long and you used this platform to say this is the starting point. I understand all of them. I am going to give you some receipts. I am not going to do the whole thing. You know who she is. I want to set the ground with some receipts. 37 years as a public servant. Caucus, ional black Ranking Member of the financial services. Sometimes we have to put receipts on the table. Public advocate, my neighbor. She said we dont need that, i like this. She did not just get here. Done inhat she has california with affirmative abuse legislation and prevention training programs. Listen. Prohibition of police strip searches for nonviolent misdemeanors. [applause] let me get some more. Committee of housing and opportunity, she has led legislation to mitigate foreclosures and keep American Families and their homes and this is incredible stuff. This is our children and our home, our families. Lastly beside the idea of expanding access to health care there is another one of her priorities. She spearheaded the minority aid which under her continuing leadership has increased from side of 50 million to 400 million today. [applause] it is your time. Give it up. Applause]and congresswoman it is what this a look at this room. Wow. I want to say one thing and make sure we set the record straight. The media loves to live. Together was Maxine Waters. Her and we asked her if we were allowed to grace you all with the name reclaiming our agreed that was the right title. He was not the headline. Looking at the keynote and the headliner for our convention. Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Applause] dand look at you. [applause] look at you. Strong . Feeling are you feeling confident . Are you feeling powerful . Those whoa message to try and divide us and say we are together. [applause] i am so honored to be here with all of you. I knew that this was going to be a great success. I knew that women were going to come from everywhere. Supportive of are each other and i know that we are going to send a great message from here today. Give yourself a huge round of applause. Applause]and let me just say a few thanks. I want to thank them for that warm introduction and for presenting me. For the cofounders of the womens march. Want to thank you for this distinct honor and for bringing us together once again to discuss the issues that concerned women in this country. Ladies and gentlemen, it is so am our tent that we think thank you and we give recognition to those who decide to his and their time understanding we are powerful and strong if we come together. Give them a big round of applause. We have got to acknowledge the womens march board members. Give them a round of applause. [applause] women in thee audience that i know you have heard from and you see from time to time on television. I dont know if you really understand how hard they work and what they do every day and what we are all up against and how they stand up and push back and resist. Senatorou to give debbie stepanov a big round of applause. [applause] is congresswoman Brenda Lawrence. Brenda is a powerful member of congress. I love her. She does not take anything off of anybody. Give her a big round of applause. From congresswoman debbie dingell. You will see her on television speaking truth to power. Roomtands up in the back when no one is looking and tells it like it is. There is a member of congress who has been supportive of women for many, many years. He is quiet, confident, powerful. He has impeccable integrity. Give john conyers a big round of applause. [applause] gentlemen, yound have these members of congress, who are working hard every day under some very difficult circumstances. I cannot tell you how thrilled i am to be here in detroit to once again tell the world that the women in this country are reclaiming our time. [cheers and applause] we are reclaiming our time. I want you to know how thrilled i was to participate in the january womens march. It was not a protest. It was a movement that was founded for women and by women of all works of of all walks of life you are very concerned about the future and direction of this country. I walked and talked and laughed and cried and i saw those pussycats and i went crazy. It was wonderful. That january march sent a message around the world. We are reclaiming our time. I am so glad you are here. We are speaking to women who are single mothers, working two or three jobs, women who have been exploited, harassed, and taken at vantage up. Women who have been taken advantage up. Women you have been this threat who have been disrespected in the boardroom. We gather once again to discuss the issues and organize a plan of action to continue our resistance and i think the cofounders of the womens march for inviting me here to share what i believe are most pressing an immediate concerns. I want to take time to focus on something i think we need to focus on right now. It is very fortuitous that we are gathered here this afternoon in detroit as we continue to witness a Record Number of women who are boldly coming forward to reveal disturbing and grotesque acts of Sexual Harassment, pe. Ault, and ra we have learned that it is not only hollywood actresses and entertainers who have been targeted. It is also members of congress. Congresswoman jackie spear and teachers, ticians, nurses, women in the military, and so any others who have lived in shame and fear but who have now boldly come forward with their own stories and exposed just how prevalent rape culture is in our society. In addition to all of the issues women are fighting for, paid maternity leave, equal pay for equal work, at the top of our ,genda, at this convention there must be an effort to strengthen courage and inspire them to continue to come forward and revealed the abuses they have silently endured. This Convention Must be designed , the declaration that women are unified and we support one another in this fight, whether you are black, white, green, yellow, rich or poor or young or old, the women at this convention and all across the country have had enough. Enough is enough. We are not going to take it anymore. Enough is enough. Warre waging our own against Sexual Harassment and rape. We are waging a war against the perverts who think we can be misused or exploited. We are not taking it anymore. Today, we declare that we will partolerate, ignore, or be of a culture that turns a blind eye to Sexual Harassment. We do not care who you are, how much money you have, how powerful you are, and how you think you are powerful, keep your nasty comments away from us. Liesyour tricks and your to yourself. Backsour hands off our our god damn bodies. We are not going to take it anymore. By now, every woman in this room should understand the cost of silence. Take a look at who we now have in the white house. Donald trump is the most dishonorable and despicable human being to ever serve in the office of the presidency. His declaration of being able to grab women by their private parts or his own history with is theassault violations kind of mentality that sends a message to men and young boys that if the president of the United States can get away with it, so can i. This president has no respect for women. Him. 2 Carly Fiorina and face. I wasthat alked when he st hillary clinton. Talk abouted to her her experiences during the campaign and she said she wanted so badly to turn around and look at him and say, creep, get off my back. And the reason she had not done it was because the consultants and the political handlers tell women we cannot say certain things. We cannot do certain things. We have to stop taking that advice. Feel. Ow how you you know when you have been violated. You know when you have been mistreated. You understand how you have been misused. When anybody does that to you, any of these men try to intimidate you and you and your place, just remember what hillary should have said creep, get off my back. Tauntedrget how he senator elizabeth warren, said she has a nasty mouth and gave her a racist nickname. He tried to discredit susan price and he susan price. He has continued to attack congresswoman Frederica Wilson in an attempt to distract us from the fact that he has no respect for military families. Kelly,ef of staff, john a fourstar general, who was supposed to be so highly respected, blatantly lied on congress moose and congresswoman wilson. Number 45. This is the president of the United States. This is a man with no good values, no good intentions, and no respect. We must keep fighting and women must lead this resistance. With so much at risk, we cannot afford to be shut down or to be shut up by any man, particularly not one as indecent and deplorable as donald trump. Applause] every day that he is in the white house is an affront to all of our nations most sacred values. Inghas insulted a griev widow. This is a president who mocked a disabled reporter. This is a president who was slow to condemn the white supremacists. He called the nfl players who peacefully protested sons of. Itches who should be fired he has obstructed justice right before our eyes. He did collude with he is a president who i believe did collude with the russians to undermine our democracy. President who can call everybody and name except putin. Except putin. This is a president who told us before he was elected that he was going to lift the sanctions for russia. This is a president who not only colluded with putin but this is a president who understands not only what he is doing for russia and what tillerson is doing, who was supposed to be his secretary of state. They want to lift the sanctions to drill for oil in the arctic. It is all about the money. Follow the dollar and you will understand what they are doing. They dont care about you. They dont care about me. They dont care about america. They dont care about our democracy. It is about the dollar. It is about the money. Understand there may be some indictments coming in the next day or so. We do not know exactly who it is but it ought to be manafort and the others who are allied around oil and support for russia. Guess what, i want to thank you all for being the patriots that you are. You believe enough in this country that you are willing to stand up and fight for democracy, fight for the rights for everybody to participate and be treated equally. Those on the other side of the aisle who claim to be patriots, who claim that they waive their , they arer than we do not patriots. They are willing to sit by. They have no guts.
