Aller well, you know, first i live in north dallas, four hours from houston. Frankly, i was in cincinnati visiting, taking care of my mother. Texas today. But from my understanding, my wife is there, obviously, the hurricanes didnt impact the dallas area, obviously. Very troubled that many just in at we go, not the United States, but also in caribbean areas and , im k at puerto rico concerned we use destinations as places for entertainment and enjoyment and there has not been focus on the erritories that are badly damaged and so it does trouble on hat while we concentrate the 48 states and continental, focus on the areas that enjoying lot of time ourselves. Im really troubled by that, i of relief e kind focus, the campaigns. Say for instance, the campaign in houston, there is nothing come close to that that deals puerto rico, Virgin Islands nd other territories that have been decimated in a worse sense than what happened in houston. Working on her doctorate in florida, she had to florida briefly. The hurricanes are not just about florida or houston, those tragic situations. We need to come out of this just about in houston and texas and look at territories that have been decimated more so. The sentiment reflected by the Washington Post today. Is t forget puerto rico, what they write. President trump approved disaster declaration for puerto and needed step, they write, it will make federal available to puerto rico. He plans to visit puerto rico for mr. S important trump to go to texas and florida to show the countrys commitment it is important to go to puerto rico. In doing so, he sets an example country, st of the like houston and florida, the devastated island needs our help. Bill is in sebastian, florida, the line for those impacted by recent hurricanes. Go ahead. Morning, ah, good john. Yeah, i live here in a trailer tre directly across the street from the indian river. Had re fortunate, we only , there was some damage the d barefoot bay, with homes and i was fortunate enough shelter. A sunrise unrise people needed electricity for machines and whatnot. The people there did an excellent job and there were people there. What they did, they used in a ooms, four of us classroom. Elderlyn there with some people, 90 years old. Hey have their breathing equipment and myself, as well. Running this shelter . Officials . Caller Public School ran by mr. Pritchitt, the principal. You had county workers that were working on the clock and 12hour shifts and you had the people in the kitchen working all day know, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well run. Elievably host have you talked to mr. Pritchard since the storm . Caller no, i havent. I havent gone back over there, i told him let him know great job they all did. Nd it was called sunrise elementary school. And they just did a fantastic job, you know, they converted a ssrooms and gave everyone cot. You had the electricity and the generator, which went out once, the electric went out once electric urned the back on with the alternative generator. All, it was, you know, i how urprised, you know, well it went and more surprised my trailer was still here. Bill, thanks for the call from florida this morning. Another front page from one of florida papers. Florida today. Beaches taking a 37 do not hit, damages include the residences and businesses. Of course, the the recovery costs, the packages that are and moving through Congress Certainly something that we have been following and tracking, talking with members of congress about. Well be joined by two members of congress coming up this congressman frances rudy of the 19th district of florida. Earlier this im week about his district after his week down there. On what his thoughts hes seeing, what hes xperienced this week and then later today, well be talking to plascit, the delegate from the virgin island. Hit way writes, we were hard by irma and find debris clean up difficult because of businesses working for cities and counties. And t. J. Says any recovery that well, democrats will be silent. Ny recovery that has problems, democrats are quick to put the blame on President Trump. Impacted by miami, the recent hurricanes. Good morning. Caller good morning. Impacted by the amount of trees that fell, but everyone in out there and t cleaned them up. What i wanted to say was, of this state did an job. Llent he gets on television telling that were in affected places to move to shelters. They open up a lot of shelters. I went through hurricane andrew. Lost my house then. We had then, or who was a democrat, did nothing. Ly nothing. When the hurricane was coming. So a big change. Thank you very much. Host thanks for the call. By recent hurricanes, want to talk about the Recovery Efforts, 2027488000. Others, past hurricane seasons, want to hear your 2027488001. Ll, as youre calling in this orning, as we noted cspans crews were in houston this past week and while we were down here, we spoke with the red cross about Recovery Efforts. Here is what they had to say funds wereome relief being used there. The of the 300 million the received for Hurricane Harvey is going to all the to be back here to the community. Were going to use all that the hurricane, for the efforts. 90 . 91 of every dollar received will go back to provide . 09 is and the other had 3100 lunteers, we workers and volunteers around texas. We have 190 emergency vehicles round the affected areas providing food and hygienic also to provide meals and thing. At kind of . 91 of every dollar of the 300 back to provide the services and the rest, the going for logistics and management and things like that. Your calls taking this morning. S we discuss the impact of the recent hurricanes, want to hear your stories. Theou have been impacted by hurricanes, tell us about recovery effort necessary your area, how you are working with local officials, what interactions have been like, 2027488000. All others, for certainly want to hear your tories, as well, from past hurricanes. As you call in, we want to turn to the united tates delegate from the virgin island, stacy plaska joining us phone. The thank you for your time this morning. Tell us what youre hearing from islands. N i know you are in d. C. , how are you communitying with folks down thee and give us a sense of impact. There is some cell reception in some areas, there are quite a number of people who have access people are so communicating by facebook. That e two radio stations have been able to get themselves up so communications are way and l that satellite telephones are in place. Me thankful you have given the time to let everybody know what has happened in the u. S. Virgin stand thomas and lost st. St. John, tremendous instruction the islands from past hurricanes, where we lost ur hospital, the roof came off the hospital, so many homes were lost, along with other public infrastructure. Police stations, fire stations, schools were destroyed in irma. Hat was a category 5 when it hit the island of the north side f the island of st. Thomas and st. John. St. Croix had not used as eating and was base camp for much of the relief thomas and g to st. St. John. Island of through the st. Croix as category 5, almost a direct hit, which means now on island, as well, there is tremendous devastation, also. We we are going to be mediva cing hospital patients transferred from st. Thomas to croix, they on st. Have to be removed. We thought that we were able to children over to go to croix and finish out the school year that, is not a possibility now. Dont even have like puerto no utility is service rosworking right now, generator, which cannot last. It is estimated, unless we get support from the federal government, we will not least ilities on for at three months. So its going to be tremendous effort. A lot of resources and a lot of attention are being spent on its size o because of and the number of occupants, im us eful you are letting speak, we are also part of the United States and many people in islands are feeling like were being forgotten, particularly when weve been hit both hurricanes. Host people try to understand there,e of the need down weve talked about perhaps 150 billion dollars or more for the houston area for recovery. Do you have a sense at this point of what it is going to islands . The virgin devastation ow is our governor yesterday was visit for an aerial see, roix, to be able to but were not even able to clear he debris still to get to all the buildings, to get to each our Public Housing structures, areas of the island to get a true assessment. Andt now it is still search rescue, trying to find trapped ls who may be in their homes. My own i still do not know looks like at e this point because family embers have not been able to traverse or even walk to where y house is with the downed trees and poles, to be able to get on what that looks like. So were still, we do know that we have no utilities, so that alone, building and bringing materials to an island is so expensive than it is to the state. So just the cost of shipping materials, cargo planes coming other places in the United States. Been destroyed means that [cuttingng has to start out]a00 in a place our finances were already strained. To need so much help from the federal government and that is the fight im having discussions with members of congress, the senate themhe house to explain to the degree going to need the support. Resistanceou getting in that fight . Resistance, i the is not directly face on, but the is through things cassidy ht now the graham amendment, the amendment to the health care bill, which to cut federal funding and federal support in the islands. [cutting out] resources have o go into that area to treat to the ho cant go other thats the kind of resistance that im that we to overcome. E already had disparity in our federal funding formula for infrastructure, weve not been a new school for 20 years. And were t take going to lose an entire tourist season. April w, october through is when most of our tourists ome down, when we have the highest influx and that is not going to be there. Across the island, our trees are bare, it looks like winter there. Brown from the salt blast on all the everything on the island. Host delegate, we want to say thank you for your time. Us perspectiveng on what is happening in the Virgin Islands. For people at n the red cross. We have a center down here called the baby center, that was opened up for like three or four days to the refugees that came of south florida and the people were up here, pregnant women, families, grandparents and such and they spent all they here. Come up they let them into this baby center for three or four days then they told them they had to leave the next morning, forewarning. They had to be out by noon. I went down there trying to find places to go, people would camp out, if they had a place to camp. The red cross actually lied to the community when they found activists were here trying to get the people where stay longer ace to and the red cross just turned them over to the community and he church and everything, told them they had to get out. I dont understand that and id to why have an answer as this happened. Host we appreciate the question this morning. Lines, 2027488000 if have you been impacted by recent hurricanes. 2027488001, for all others. A few more tweets in this hurricanes. Though we had problems, the after experience was completely happy with. Nice, got a really educated amount of people down here that know what to coafter storms to help the individual and i just hope that everybody had the same i did. Nce that host do you think you will be funds . Use of recovery is there anything any programs you are hearing about you might involved in . Or or caller there might be, but not that some nt people we still have a roof over our head. We still have all of our windows in tact. Extremely lucky, but then again, with all the experiences had with the prior 99 on up from hrough today, we knew how to take preparations and to help and it the property really paid off. Lessons ts one or two you learned and applied yourself when irma came through . Think that it is not going to affect you. Hadnt affected you in years past doesnt mean its not going to sneak up on around. S time do what the officials say. Dont think that they know know more than they do. About the experience that i could give to anybody thats wanting to move down here florida. You got to remember, back in charlie, ere hit with jean and frances all within just weeks. E of we had three goodsize storms lot of oss us, so a people in this area knew what to do. Anything backlose then when the storms came through, hugh . Was mostly sir, it just limbs and foliage. Mean, we didnt have a generator back then, but we did generator after that and it sat out in the garage for 12 any use, but when it was time to fire it up, we you got to make sure that you got some cash to eed them generators, those things could cost you up to 50 were in just gas, so we lucky enough to be able to have few of the amenities that we were used to. We all had to gather up in one bedroom, the three of us. Son is bled, my disabled. My wife was still trying to work with the problems that we had here and i tell you wasnt for my wife, i dont know i dont think this experience would have been went off as well as it did. Caller i recently read an article about the National Flood program and it concerned me a great deal in in they say that theyre the hole a good bit and that, know, theyre struggling to figure out how to work the thing money into it. Claimsng like 40 of the are multiple claims, in other words, you know, the people have been hit with several disasters i , you know, repetitive and dont think our government can afford, you know, for this to go on. You know, i guess thats my comment. Once, if somebody use its do you think they should be allowed to use it again . Onetime insurance . Caller well, in all fairness, we going to re are pay for it . Our government is broke. Knows that. Ybody were borrowing money every year, so, you know, with the two disasters, imagine the ticket on this thing, you know. Host appreciate the call. Far as irma was concerned, we had no phone, i internet for r five days. 21 2 days, there to my Property Damage house. Comparing this to Hurricane Matthew phone or e had no internet for seven days, there was no power for seven days, no property phone or damage, i thi difference with this was irma. Eing such a big storm i think the authorities prepared this irma than they did for matthew, last time. Way, mark . At in terms of communicating with you . I think that they enlisted repair crews from the country even before irma had made landfall and i think that th get him from the 19 district, we talked to him on onday, hes been touring the destruction in his district or Recovery Efforts, so if we can on the phone before the end of the program, well be joined by him. Roof in se our Hurricane Matthew last october and the time our insurance roof and d cover the were quick to act, but they so t cover the deductible, since were on limited income, i applied to fema. Denied, but i appeald and they helped with the deductible. Want to mention, i think we need a wall, excuse me the quote, not that wall in mexico, it is sea walls. Be ink fema is going to ontinually funding people, paying insurance for people over and over again on beach front rebuild, when people they need to have seawalls. Local e probably ordinances that will have to be changed, but i think seawall on property is the way to go in this country. Storm after e one another. Thank you. Host on the fema experience, take . Ng did that process how long did you not have a roof over your head and what does up pay something how much did they give you to cover the deductible . Okay. R oh, with the insurance, you know, i ad hired a guy and the insurance reimbursed me. Fema probably took two months to appeal. Ad my deductible was 1000 and that is what i got. I asked on appeal i got it. Appreciative of that. And the roofe home peeled off like a sardine can. It just went and i was appreciative of that. The timee you in it at it happened . Caller oh, no, no, Hurricane Matthew, we evacuated. E were headed to atlanta from South Carolina area. Made it part of the way because my husband didnt do well on the ended up in, e. We were impacted by Hurricane Irma, we lost power for seven and we lost power for seven disappointed re but fema was in our area, we didnt know it because we had a lot ofr no radio and us dont get the newspaper. Were they do nothing your area, barbara . Rescues or they were giving out and at the corner of 98 66th, which we found out the last day, after the seventh day got our electric and found out that the salvation meals, s giving out hot but nobody knew where or the time or anything because the that was opened was publix, we get a lot of people fort myers, which is understandable, everybody my only thing,d, they should have posted signs around the city. Scrambling for food because no electric and, and we did thing, have plenty of water. My sister and i. Disappointed in the fema response here as far as Community Know other than t. V. , radio and newspaper. Otherwise, good job was done in as far as people having to leave their homes. In our area. Amage host what about that beforehand,on effort barbara . Were you satisfied with the way the governor communicated, the officials communicated before the storm . Caller yes, yes, yes, we were, very much. Mean, they informed everybody and told them to get out for things like that. Where we were at, we didnt have to leave. The point, beside you know. They need to be a little bit far as no sive as t. I just want to say i love for n, thank you very much all the information and everything you give us. My heart goes out to everybody hurricanes. The im sorry. Rene, go listening, ahead. Caller okay. Live by where the valley fire hit two years ago in Hidden Valley lake. You know, people here are still recovering from the valley fire. A long way yet for the people down in florida with the hurricanes. A other day there was gentleman on from montana and there was a man who called from and he asked about fire oads and the gentleman from montana said that there is no fire roads because of liberals. That is so untrue. If anybody went through wildfire tis not like boston. Out here, it is different. Watch a fire take over our ntire community and our county and was evacuated for 12 days. People are suffering here, they years ago, they cant rebuild. It has nothing to do, we dont have bark oads, we beatles that eat trees and so forth. Go through it so fast, they turn into charcoal. Know, to make Something Like this political is know, we got to understand the earth is changing and we got to change with it. Want to say thank you. Host before you go, do you think that there busy been focus this season on the fires out west . Federal ink the resources were distributed well enough in the wake of everything east coast with the hurricanes coming up . Any concern about that . No, i dont think the forest fires are ever, you know, on just dont understand the east coast, its host what dont we understand . Environment, how you get icanes come, warning. When a fire is coming, there is no warning. Valley fire was second worse in the state of california and started 1 30 in the afternoon. House. S from my and i had by 4 00 in the dark, oon, it was pitch you couldnt see at all outside. Blow five mbers miles. I mean, fire road is not going help you. Embers are blowing five miles. About e know what to do trees that were affected by bark on les, its going to keep happening, you know. Eforestization was happening constantly up my mountain. They were trimming the forests it didnt ling them, matter. The bark beetle came in, something werent wrong and it wiped down everything. Took out 1100 homes, killed four people. Host appreciate you bringing up hat aspect of natural disasters. Daines was on earlier this week. You can go back and watch that at cspan. Org. Alabama and hat was about sech ti7 30 this morning. Diane, woodstock, ga dpa, go ahead. Thank you for taking my call. The just comment on reaction of the government and verything to the recent hurricanes compared to katrina. Difference. E a big for example, you know, in louisiana, and other places like texas and houston, people got on boats and went in to rescue people that were not government and stuff. Katrina, they somermed people, police or sort of military or i dont know hat exactly they were, must have been police, that stood on the bridges and they would not and they would not let anybody out. People were not allowed to people. D help players and otball different wealthy people from buses that loaded up full of food and water and they back. Turned by armed police, i suppose it was. The surrounding communities, still had water and things like that. They could have walked over, some of them, to the other were preventedey from doing that. Found race had a lot to do with this type of attitude, obviously. Woman walked on the bridge, with a few black folks a neighboring community or something. Warned her ce had and she is probably not used to dealing with this type of thing. She kept walking forward and they fired over her head, you know. Not coming any further. That. Want to comment on we got a phone call from a friend of the family, that is elderly sister was down in mobile. I was listening to the radio and too, some things that appened, i couldnt believe it during katrina, this type of thing going on. It was just criminal. In fort lauderdale, florida. Good morning. Caller yes, hello. Just wanted to say that we wilma, rough hurricane the situation was handled totally different. Water. Was they gave out ice. They gave out water. Off, the way wer they handled it, handled enforcement and went to residential first. Hon hurricane, they went to hospitals, law the cement and then to Business Community first and then they did the residents last. That was wrong. Then the way they got our information, if you dont have power, we went seven days without power. Food was spoiling and everything. They didnt hand out no ice or the fourth or fifth day. A friendriend of mine, has a school and he brought us keep our food fresh on until st couple of days we could get some ice from when ice. Started to give out we couldnt get ice in the super markets, which made no sense to supermarkets had about a week and some days knowing this was coming and they didnt load up on ice. Went en wilma, when we through wilma, the government told the stores and everything to load up on ice and everything else. And they had truck loads coming our food ow, now all was for, we had to throw away make anyood, it didnt sense. But they carried way out west in the community, not a central location. Way up north. Host would you say you are back to normal at this point or how long is that going to take . Caller we just got our power back a couple of days ago, like about two or three days ago. I had to throw away all of our food. My house was smelling because the food was rotten. It was ridiculous. When we went to wilma, we didnt have to get rid of all of our food.
