From washington journal, this is about 40 minutes. Them washington journal continues. Host we are joined now by rebeca berg, National Political reporter at rea realclearpolitics. Everyone is still talking about this debate on fox news for the republican president ial candidates. Lets start by getting your take on how it went. Who are the winners and losers . Guest it was obviously a big onge, lots of republicans it. It is hard to say if there was one definitive winner or loser. There were people who did a job in the debate that will help them. Some of them may be did not give the strongest performance. I would put Carly Fiorina at the top of the list. She was in the socalled host explain how the debate worked. Guest the format is they split republicans into two groups. There were the seven lowest ranking republicans. It took place earlier in the night, no audience, slightly easier questions. Then, there was the primetime debate among the top 10 republicans. They chose the top 10 by looking at the most recent national polls, which was a source of controversy in the Republican Party because national polling. S based on metrics Carly Fiorina was one of the participants in the undercard debate. She is not polling very high, most people dont know who she is, frankly. She performed very well. Now, a lot of people are talking about her. Maybe, potentially, she could be in the top 10 next time. Host in the primetime debate, of course everybody was talking about donald trump. How did he do . Guest he performed as people expected. There was some thinking that maybe he would come of the debate stage, be a little more subdued. That did not really happened. Brash as donald trump always is. He did not try to start any fights with republicans on stage with him. He stuck with answering the questions from the moderators. The moderators asked some very difficult questions of donald trump, looking at his past stances, and some controversial remarks that he has made in the past. He did get a little testy with those questions from the moderators and got into a personal exchange with megan kelly, which has only escalated since then. Host lets talk about that now. It was news recently there was news recently that donald trump would be disinvited from a gathering. Thereis the statement are lines that politicians should not cross, and decency is one of those lines, in an interview that donald trump gave to cnn he said of megan kelly, there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming , megan kelly has been invited in Donald Trumps place tomorrow night. What is the fallout . My inclination would be to say that he will be less popular among women. Ed to be amp has seem tough candidate. He makes these comments, and people are entertained, or for whatever reason, they are really offended by what he has to say. Instead of going down in the polls, usually he says these things, and goes up in the polls. Basically, he has been the most counterintuitive candidate that i have ever seen. Host has there been any quick polling postdebate to see where the candidates stand . Focus i have seen some groups, and there was one informative focus group that fox aired directly after the debate, and the viewers that he talked to were very turned off by donald trump and his performance. That could be an indication of where we see polling go from here. Host we are take your calls for the segment. You can join the discussion. What do you think of the gop president ial seal and the campaign overall . Were going back to our regular phone lines. Republicans can call 202 7488000. Democrats can call at 202 7488001. Independents, 202 7458002. We are on twitter, cspanwj. And on facebook, facebook. Com cspan. You can send us an email at journal cspan. Org. Our guest is rebeca berg of realclearpolitics. We look to our first call now from robert in arkansas. Good morning to you. Caller good morning. Debatestened to these donald trump is just a distraction from the real issues. This is a very serious issue. Days ago, a fellow working at a plant here in harrison got his leg torn off, and he died on the plant floor. The whole plant has been shut down for three days. The employers are paying everyone to not work. Is getting ready to come in that. On the other hand, all of these candidates that are standing up there, they support what is called free market Free Enterprise capitalism, which means they are allowed to go anywhere. Coke industries is already in malaysia. Cuttingon had ever been inhad a ribboncutting arkansas for vietnam, the same country that americans were drafted to stop communism. The real issue is free market itee enterprise capitalism is for one thing doing more to to get theunism product. Earlier you talked about maternity leave. You know, that comes through the process. When you allow any country to have free access to our markets, and then expect Companies Like this company here in harrison, there is trying to work with its workers, and are getting ready to seek no telling what with osha there is no way you can compete. Host all right. We do have a clip of Donald Trumps exchange with megan kelly that we want to bring to you now. [video clip] mr. Trump, one of the things that people love about you is you speak about your mind, and o not use a politicians filter. However, that is not without its downsides when it comes to women. You have called women you dont s, animals only rosie odonnell. [applause] for the record, it was well beyond rosie odonnell. Im sure it was. The your twitter account has lots of disparaging comments about celebrities looks. How will you answer the charge from Hillary Clinton who will likely be the democratic nominee that you are part of the war on women . , i think the big problem that this country has is being politically correct. [applause] i have been challenged by so many people, and i frankly dont have time for total political correctness. To be honest with you, this country doesnt have time either. This country is in big trouble. We dont wait any more we lose to china, we lose to mexico both in trade and at the border. We lose to everybody. Frankly, often times what i say spun. Dontly, megan, if you like it, im sorry. I have been very nice to you, dont have to be, based on the way you have treated me. E need strength we need energy. We need quic for this, and brain in this country we need ness, and brain in this country. Are speaking with rebeca berg of realclearpolitics. Talk a little more about how donald trump has handled the situation after the debate. What is his relationship with megan kelly looking like now . Guest significantly worse than before he went into the debate. He felt that megan kelly was not treating him fairly in that debate, and maybe in instances prior. Subsequent to the debate, he has gone on to do interviews with other competing news outlets, and now only criticize the way megan kelly is treating him, but you noted the red state controversy or noted the red state controversy or earlier over his comment about her hormonal state which offended a lot of people. Thats what it is right now and hes not winning anyone over fox news. You see a republican candidate go after fox news which is basically is the most Friendly Network of all to these conservative candidates and one where conservatives often try to win over fox news as opposed to go to war with fox news. Usually you see the republican candidates go to battle with outlets like the New York Times and tends to do well for them in terms of fundraising or rallying their supporters and could have an opposite effect. Megyn kelly is popular among the conservatives and the very people donald trump includes in his base. It will sbbing to see how they react to this. Host our next caller is glenn from lancaster, california, from the independent line. Glenn, now youre on the air. Go ahead. Caller good morning. I would like to hear the republicans talk about jobs for american citizens. We lack jobs because of the legal Foreign Workers here that. Re working against the law need to change the knowingly so of our Immigration Law the fines are enforced. And guess what . That will pay for welfare, housing, a lot of things. Plus, american citizens would go back to work right here in our own country where illegal aliens, Foreign Workers are taking our jobs, ruining our schools, our streets. They are jobs we want to do. Host thats glenn from california. Rebecca berg, why didnt the economy play a bigger part in thursday nights debate . Caller thats an excellent question. Guest thats an excellent question. We look what drives voters in president ial elections and economy and jobs are usually at the top, the number one issue driving voters. Especially republican voters, they care about taxation and care about jobs in this election cycle. So i actually thought it was very interesting that this didnt come up more. In terms of economic discussion, we did see a lot of Immigration Reform discussion and obviously there are very major implications for the economy when were talking about Immigration Reform as glenn, the caller just noted, of course people are afraid that their jobs could be compromised if Immigration Reform isnt tackled by these politicians and what we saw talked about more at this debate. The next debate it is safe to say would be more talk on the economy. Host do you see a shift in the issues that will energize the Republican Base in 2016 from the economy to other issues, or do you think its still early yet to get to some of the iscussion . Guest it is early to know because it tends to be a question of what does the economy look like the day the voters go to the polls. Obviously we have the Iowa Caucuses the beginning of february and New Hampshire shortly after that. Its a couple months away still but immigration in terms of the very conservative base republican voters, this has become something of a litmus test. You see how marco rubio, for example, has struggled with this issue after supporting the gang of eight bill in the senate, hes had to sort of work his position over with conservatives. And you saw in the debate he took a stance that maybe was a little more conservative than he has, focusing on building a wall and focusing on Border Security and not focusing on what comes after that and what weve seen from a lot of republicans because this is very much an energizing issue for the base. Host and here is some of what marco rubio said in thursday nights debate on immigration. Marco it is as simple as our leaders are stupid, their leaders are smart and all of these illegals coming over are criminal . Let me set the record straight on a lot of things. The evidence is clear the majority of people coming across the border are not mexico but coming from guatemala, el salvador, honduras and are the source of people coming in as the majority. I also believe we need a fence. The problem is el chapo builds a tunnel under the fence we have to deal with that, too and why you know a e verified system and entry tracking system and all other things to prevent illegal immigration. I agree with what governor kasich said, this is the most generous country in the world when it comes to immigration. There are a Million People who legally immigrate to the units and people feel like were being taken advantage despite our generosity. And let me tell you who never gets talked about in these debates, the people that call my office who have been waiting 15 years to come to the United States and they paid their fees and hired a lawyer and they cant get in and wondering maybe they should come illegally. And so these are important issues and we should address it. Its a verse problem that needs to be addressed. And otherwise were going to keep talking about this the next 30 years like we have for the last 30 years. Host that was marco rubio talking about immigration on thursday nights republican debate. Our next caller is kimberly from pennsylvania on the republican line. What did you think of the debate and what do you think of the candidates so far . Caller ok. Well, i think megyn kellys first question to donald trump was uncalled for. Its as if we are not allowed to even have an opinion or say anything freely anymore. I mean, its better than what bill clinton did, god bless donald for standing up for himself. And as far as marco, this problem has been going on for 30 years. And hes talking about doing it the right way as opposed to letting a bunch of unknowns, whether illegal or whatever, unknown. You have no idea what these people have done or are going to do. Im a strong supporter of donald trump. Hes got what you call moxie. Hows that . Host thats kimberly from pennsylvania. Guest thats what i was talking about earlier, Donald Trumps supporters are very much his supporters. He can say anything so controversial or offensive, but the color that he is word she used was moxie but think hes authentic and like his brash way of speaking. And so i think that is really the wild card in how does this play out in the polls . Do people think that megyn kelly was in fact going after donald trump and unfair to him or do they think that hes not someone with the graph it was gravitaus to be president. So far its been the former, its been giving donald trump the benefit of the doubt. Its a question of when voters will no longer give him the benefit of the doubt. Host dave on the democratic line. Good morning to you. Caller good morning, ladies. I feel megyn kelly got what she eserved from donald trump. I think donald trump stood up to her. Because when i can sometimes stomach to watch fox news, especially her, she is rude and i feel she got what she deserves, and i dont think is hiding that she behind being a woman. She is a news person. Shes an interviewer. And i feel donald give it to her and he give it to her good and im proud he did it and im even a democrat and thats what i have to say. And you have a lovely host thats dave from ohio. Guest this is what we keep seeing. People are drawn to donald trump because he says what he thinks because he comes off as a very strong person because he is so forceful. But is that president ial . Thats the question voters will need to look at. So here is more evidence of exactly what is driving donald trump in the polls and what continues to drive him. And of course i came in here saying i dont really know how this is going to play out. Are people going to stick with donald trump as they have. Hearing these callers, clearly he has a well of support and clearly people tuned into this debate and saw something in him even in the way he was treating megyn kelly that they found attractive. I think this is something that continues to really surprise republicans because you talk to people in other campaigns and you talk to people at the r. N. C. You cant understand what is going on here. Everyone thinks its a matter of when is Donald Trumps Campaign Going to explode, when is it going to sink itself . Thats not happening even after these more recent remarks. Host moving on from trump in a moment, you covered a bit of New Hampshire this week. Heres a bit of your story. The g. O. P. Got a brief respite from the donald trump show monday but even without the brash businessman onstage, other contenders struggled to hit their stride. Is part of the issue the quality of the other candidates . Hats going on here. Guest there are and we saw it from the debate in cleveland. There are very talented candidates on the stage with him. The New Hampshire forum was a little bit different because it wasnt technically a debate. They did three interview with each of the candidates and it was a bit of a strange format so it kind of showed in the candidates reactions but in this debate on thursday, i thought many of the candidates were very strong. You see people who were underdogs in the race, Chris Christie and john kasich get up on the stage and make salient points due in a polished way but approachable way. Marco rubio had something of a breakout night. Scott walker even posted a pretty good performance even though he didnt get as much talking time as some of the other candidates. And you have jeb bush who has a well funded campaign and didnt make big mistakes. You have other strong candidates but donald trump is someone who all americans know, most of these other candidates havent really been introduced to the greater American Public yet though this debate got very good ratings and maybe that gave them a good first look. But he gets Media Attention these other candidates cannot. So thats part of the challenge is breaking through all of this donald trump noise and getting attention when he is getting all of it. Its very difficult. Host one moment thats garnered some publicity is the exchange between rand paul and Chris Christie over n. S. A. Data collection. Heres a bit from the debate on thursday night. I want to collect more records from terrorists and less records from innocent americans. Rand the fourth attempt is what we fought the resolution over. John adams said it was a spark that led to our war for independence and im proud of standing for the bill of rights and i will continue to stand for the bill of rights. Chris megyn, thats a completely ridiculous answer. I want to collect more records from terrorists but less records from other people. How are you supposed to know, megyn . How are you supposed to rand use the Fourth Amendment and get a judge to signs a warrant. Chris listen, senator, when youre sitting in a subcommittee blowing hot air about this, you can say things like that. When youre responsible for protecting the lives of the American People, then what you need to do is make sure that you use it the way its supposed to work. Rand heres the problem, governor, you fundamentally misunderstand the bill of rights. Every time you did a case, you got a warrant from a judge. Im talking about searches without warrants indiscriminately of all americans records and what i fought to end. I dont trust president obama with our records. I know you gave him a big hug and if you want to give him a big hug again, go right ahead. Chris and you know, senator paul, you know the hugs that i remember are the hugs that i gave to the families who lost their people on september 11. Those are the hugs i remember. And those had nothing to do with politics, unlike what youre doing by cutting speeches on the floor of the senate that putting them on the internet within a half an hour to raise money for your campaign, and while still putting our country at risk. Megyn we have plenty more to get to. Host that was Chris Christie and rand paul talking about n. S. A. Data check. Were talking with anna berg. Dissect that and tell me what we learned about the candidates. Guest this was a moment donald trump was not in the spotlight and you look at social media like facebook and twitter, that was the most talked about exchange of the entire debate and most talked about moment and it shows if these candidates are having interesting discussions, they can actually break through all this noise which is refreshing, i guess. And this was very much a loud discussion that rand paul and Chris Christie were having and also substantive getting to the heart of one of the most important debates the Republican Party is having now over Civil Liberties and the collection of data by the it was a fascinating one to wat ch. Or Chris Christie come out of this clearly as the winner but each represented their own policy, very clearly and articulately but it got a little personal at the end with the hug comment but it was fascinating to watch and i think thats what voters might want to see more of. Host our next caller from independent line from number, millie, what do you think . Caller good morning. Ill tell you one of the best one of the most appealing things about donald trump is he cant be bought. Every other one of those candidates is beholden to the big donors and megyn kellys we wanted informative questions, not snarky comments. And she was smirking and i will tell you what yesterday every single one of foxs f. B. Pages, facebook pages, was thousands and thousands of complaints, and we were ignored. Fox has been number one because of the viewers, and we were disrespected by somebody not addressing that. Guest millie from north carolina. And his remark not being able to be bought is fascinating. This is the point hes making time and again and made it in the debate. There was a moment he pointed to the other candidates onstage and says ive given money to each of your campaigns and you ould do whatever i told you. He had given money except john kasich and marco rubio. But this is attractive to people, hes not a politician. You saw the model could be successful with steve forbes who ran for the presidency in the past, also a self funder. This is a case a lot of selffunding candidates have made successfully. Arnold schwarzenegger did it running for governor of california and made a case because he was so rich he wouldnt listen to these special interests with money because he didnt care about them, he was incorruptible is the case hes making and is the case donald trump is making and one that appears to be resonating with people. Host donald trump wasnt the only celebrity to make news on thursday night. Kim kardashian, not a name we normally discuss on washington journal, she tweeted this picture of herself with Hillary Clinton. I got my selfie, she tweeted, i really loved hearing her speak and hearing her goals for our country. You can see kanye west there in the background with kim and hillary. So this is how the New York Times reporter story, clinton has her own celebrity moment as staff monitors debate as republicans bickered thursday night and accused ms. Clinton of being a scandal letic of old ideas and she sought to solidify her pop culture status and increase her youth appeal by posing with two of the most popular celebrities on the planet. Critics dismissed the selfie as goshe. The social media moment only added to the impression their candidate, despite not being on the stage had won the night. You agree . Guest a moment that got a lot of publicity from mrs. Clinton, not shall she needs it because shes well known by all these voters but will help her, the kardashians and kanye have a very Strong Social media presence, perhaps more so than anyone. I cant think of anyone who might have a stronger presence, really. Its good advertising for her, good free advertising for her. On t also reminds us that the democratic side we have basically no primaries going on at all. Bernie sanders is doing very well of course but at the end of the day people look at secretary clinton as the obvious frontrunner, the prohibative frontrunner, really. So as the republicans are duking it out for months to come, secretary clinton will be out getting selfies with celebrities, raising money and not really having to worry about getting out there and defending herself against attacks from other democrats. Host next up is byron calling from cleveland, tennessee, on the republican line. Byron, youre on the air. Aller good morning. I like the way he talks, like i would. Im not politically correct and dont make any apologies for it, i like donald trump. Let me say, yesterday he said that there was going to be a head job on donald trump and you saw it play out last night there. It was not just necessarily megyn kelly but probably the Republican Party, put a head job on donald trump. And donald trump, while he is fighting, he is fighting socialism and communism is what hes trying to take away from the democrat party. Youve got Bernie Sanders, hes a socialist and he calls himself a socialist, so Hillary Clinton is a socialist, also, but she hides behind the progressive title. And people need to be aware weve got a serious problem. Socialism is the first step to communism so they need to really check these folks who they are and they need to really wonder if we want to go down the socialism path like greece and these european countries. I dont think the United States of America Needs that path. Host were going to leave it there. Thats byron from tennessee. He also mentioned Bernie Sanders as you did in answer to an earlier question and according to this story on politico, Bernie Sanders was the most retweeted candidate during the debate with this comment. He wrote, its over not one war but economic inequality, Climate Change and student debt and why theyre out of touch and had been retweeted nearly 22,000 times as of friday afternoon. Guest you want to talk about social media presence, Bernie Sanders has that in spades. He has a active social media following and has for a long time and his supporters weve seen on the campaign trail where hes drawing crowds of thousands and thousands of people, tens of thousands sometimes, theyre very much engaged in his campaign which is actually something rare to see at this stage in the primaries because you look at the republican side, donald trump obviously getting a lot of traction but none of the other candidates have broken through yet in that way, being able to hold rallies with thousands of people. Bernie sanders has, and says a lot about his power as a candidate, how he can communicate his message to vast number of people quickly and that message spread very quickly and something to be aware of as we look at his campaign moving forward. Host next up from connecticut oen the democratic line, marge is calling. Good morning to you. Caller good morning. Thank god for cspan, im so blessed where i live, i get cspan 2 and 3. A quick comment to all of the previous callers so enamored with mr. Trump. He can be bought. Are they forgetting, or maybe theyre too young, they dont remember. Oh, how many decades ago his first wife, then ivana, accused him of marital rape, and what kind of stupid lawyer does he have today who said theres no such thing . They settled. To remind those callers, yes, he can be bought. He paid off ivana back then and now she came forward two weeks ago to say oh, i think i might have made a mistake, something to that effect. Well, he probably gave her another 3 million or 5 million to come forward. He can be bought. He can be a disgrace in the white house. I would be ashamed to be an american if he were our president. Thank you, lovely ladies. Have a good day. Host marge from connecticut. Can you tell us about the incident hes referring to . Guest this was news long ago as the caller remarked physical first his first wife, i dont think it was ivana, i think it was a later wife. He was accused of raping his ife at the time, forcing her to have sex even though they were married and there was a settlement and this was resolved long ago but came up recently and the lawyer said theres no such thing as marital rape which was in a conversation with a reporter and that sparked a whole other controversy and many weve seen with donald trump but one that hasnt had Major Political implications for him so far. Host next up is adam from connecticut on the republican line. Go ahead. I wanted to say i do like donald trump and think he would be a good candidate. However, i think hes got a low ceiling. I dont think that he appeals to the masses. I think that he will not get any votes across from democrats or independents and id rather see somebody like rubio emerge who i think could appeal to a contingency and would like to see us win instead of giving it away. Host the issue of marital rape did involve ivana trump. Our next caller is randy from huntsville, alabama, on the independent line. Good morning to you. Caller good morning. Host what are your thoughts for rebecca berg. Caller im an independent. I was a democrat but i like donald trump, the way he stands up for the country. I think hell make a great, great great president. Host turn down your tv, randy. Go ahead. All right. Randy, well have to move on. Our next cal caller is jasper from memphis, tennessee. Caller good morning. The guy from tennessee, im not too far from gave me an interesting segue about Citizens United. Between donald trump and megyn kelly, im glad that for donald trump put her in her place because shes no more than a big mouthpiece for the special interests and further hes saying about the country going socialism, who do you think is buying us out over here now, citizen united. Thats what megyn kelly and fox news represents. And these southern republicans now, they better wake up because when your job is gone, who you going to turn to for help . I guarantee you those big corporations arent going to help you and youll be out there by yourself. Host jasper from tennessee. Guest so these callers hit on a few interesting points. The most recent caller we had touched on Citizens United and Campaign Finance. This is going to be a big issue i think in this election and moving forward. Were starting to see democrats touch on this as an area for potential reform. Bernie sanders, of course, his whole campaign is based on the premise of not accepting money from billionaires and fighting back against their influence in government. Hes not accepting any of these big money donations thats some of the other candidates are and that message resonated with people and shows a lot of people are thinking about Campaign Finance and donald trump to some extent though hes not calling for Campaign Finance reform yet hes talking about money in politics. Certainly theres great awareness on both sides of the aisle on this issue. And of course the counterbalance, the counterexample to that i suppose would be Hillary Clinton and jeb bush for going to raise hundreds of millions of dollars already the super pac supporting jeb bush has raised a hundred Million Dollars and that will be a conversation were having on this election. Another caller made the point of donald trump having a low ceiling and thats actually something the polls have borne out. He has very low favorability ratings. There are more republicans host beyond the g. O. P. Is what you mean . Guest and beyond the g. O. P. Hes a very divisive candidate. People really like him or really dislike him and thats something we dont see with a lot of candidates, that polarization. And there are more republicans i believe for donald trump than any other republican who say they would not vote for him no matter what and thats the feeling for him. He cant really convince those republicans to ever come over to his side. Most of these other candidates you see scott walker, marco rubio, jeb bush, they can convince some voters maybe theyd be the best candidate for them. Donald trump is merely too polarizing for many people. Host next up is dominic on the republican line. Good morning to you. Caller good morning. I got to tell you, as a republican, when trump first announced, i thought it was a big joke but im going to tell you something, ive changed my mind in a big way. First of all, the man has guts. He can stand up and take a lot of junk and come back and fire back even more. As far as the megyn kelly and all this women type thing with rape and that woman from ivoryton brought it up. The reality is, and those two lovely women are not old, youre young. Jwow, a ooki and lot of american women dont act like ladies anymore and when people from ivoryton call up all irate, they have no clue about whats going on right now. Right now as we speak with women in the United States, megyn kelly is a show. Host well have to leave it there because were trying to get in one more caller and that burg, connie from north new jersey on the democratic line. Whats your thought this morning . Caller good morning. Im a democrat. So i am not going to vote for none of those people but i was looking at the debate. Nd i realize one thing, it was too bad, rubio and kasich, when they address, then to kasich they address about the gay people and they further went and asked about their daughters. If they will be gay, if theyd allow them. O i really like is when they went to rubio, they did something i did not like it. They took talk about abortion. Hes against abortion and rape or incest or whatever the case may be. But they didnt follow up. If his daughters got raped, what he is going to do. Now, thats i think it was the same thing. It was not really going after rubio or getting him, how you call it, a tough question. Host connie, unfortunately we have to leave it there because were almost out of time. Rebecca, well give you the last word. What are your thoughts on the kasich, samesex marriage answer or rubios answer on abortion . Guest the kasich moment, ill pick that because i thought that was a really fascinating moment in the republican debate. Its not what a lot of people tuning in might have expected to see in this debate. Being a republican onstage talking about how he went to a gay wedding of his friend and if his daughter was gay would be fine with it and love her anyway. Thats not what we hear a lot from the g. O. P. And kasich, this is why it makes him an interesting candidate to watch. Hes someone moderate in a lot of ways and fit in medicaid in ohio and was raised in this debate. Hes more moderate on Something Like gay marriage and these social issues. He explains it in a way hes not apologetic for it and more compassionate explanation than a lot of republicans are giving. And i will be interested to see if the conservative base can accept that sort of explanation from a candidate like kasich and whether he can appeal to republicans outside of the more moderate base that he might be talking to. Host robert daly examines u. S. China relations. And eugene odonnell, a former new York City Police officer and lecturer looks at the state of police and Community Relations on the First Anniversary of the shooting in ferguson, missouri. As always, we will take your calls and you can join the conversation on facebook or twitter. Washington journal, live at 7 00 a. M. Eastern on cspan. On thursday, journalist and author david brock interview with mike allen. Mr. Brock is the author of clear the record, a Strategic Research team supporting Hillary Clinton. Topics included an analysis of the 2016 campaign, candidate Hillary Clinton, and the republican residential candidates. This was part of politicos playbook lunch held in washington dc. It is about 30 minutes. Brock is our guest. Sort of the human embodiment of the leftwing conspiracy, in some ways. Mr. Brock having been part of the rightwing, it was much more of a rag operation versus what we see today. Sophisticatede with the Koch Brothers. We all know about the incredible amount of money put down in the selection. It is such a big number. There will be a debate tonight, but more important was the debate last weekend competing for the affection of the Koch Brothers. With that kind of money being spent, whoever the candidate on the republican side is, they will be beholden to the Koch Brothers and their agenda. They probably didnt plane of the public and front runner to be didnt plan the republican frontrunner to be a billionaire himself. Allen a fulltime defender of Hillary Clinton, which will be a tough job for a while. Right now are you more frustrated with fox news or the New York Times . Mr. Brock the New York Times. Allen you have been complaining about the New York Timescoverage an investigation of emails, the handling of the clinton emails. What if they just made a mistake . Mr. Brock institutions in general have made mistakes over time. There are a couple of issues. One, its not the first time. There is a pattern. But the first email story that they broke was also botched and had to be brought back. The second thing is, it is the way they handled it. Questions thatre the leaders of the New York Times still do not know. The issue is, how did this happen . In the case of 60 minutes, when they botched the story that was also said by republicans, he was an internal investigation. There is no review going on at the New York Times about what happened here. The sourcing is questionable. The bottom line is that media matters in 2004, we went heavy on rightwing media. People dont have to take my word for it. Your own colleague, bill myers recently wrote that the reality we are living in with the media is that they are out to get Hillary Clinton. That is the dynamic we are looking at. Its not just mistakes or getting stuff wrong. There is collusion here. As thee Hillary Clinton sole target of 17 republican candidates of congress, as well as the media. It goes all the way back to watergate if you really want to get into it. The political reporters are a secret den of rightwing nuts. Mr. Brock i dont think so, ideologically. They get used. Wants to be first. They dont want to miss a story. It certainly possible that they left this story out. We are know about the internal workings of the story. To try to be is first and to nail that prey. Theirs goes back to at least whitewater in the 1980s. The press is not learned about their mistakes. They are not repeating those same errors. Theewater was showing clintons to be untrustworthy. I think the same playbook is playing out today. Said it was ait less sophisticated operation. Today you have latterday watergate plumbers planting these stories all over the place. The Mainstream Media is sometimes a vehicle for that. Allen you are a former Investigative Reporter yourself. What can secretary clinton, her campaign, her supporters do to turn around that dynamic . Mr. Brock number one, this goes back to one of the principles of the 1992 clinton war room, that every question be answered. That doesnt necessarily have to be biden campaign. That is part of where my groups commit. That doesnt necessarily have to be by the campaign. A lot of it is beyond their control. What is in their control has been going very well. You cant necessarily control your press coverage. But there is room for organizations like ours that monitor all this stuff and are very active. You have to give people factual information so that they can make decisions. If you just let this stuff go, it can attack itself. Difficult to drive david out to get wasnt use. Yourll ask david brock questions. Explain the difference between correct the record and media matters tell us about your empire. Brock there are 12 distinct legal entities. But basically 5 missions. Mr. Allen you are in charge of all of them. Mr. Brock media matters is the mothership in 2010 for. In 2004. About 400 critiques of Media Coverage per week. Then came american bridge. That was an innovation on the democratic side in the way that research was done. An innovative model. We are combing through the records, Public Records of republican candidates. We have done federal and governor races. Beenwo years now, weve tracking and doing research on all republican candidates. I think we are further ahead than any Democratic Organization has been in collecting that data. We have trackers, more than 50 young people out in the field, in the states. Not just at the president ial level, but it every Competitive Senate race. Event they can get into, they film. When we have a nugget of news, we put that out. When talk when todd akin talks about legitimate rape, it makes the morning show. Bush on womens health, we pushed that outofthebox from there. Mr allen take us behind the scenes who spotted it . Mr. Brock you have to move so quickly. It is a streamlined process. I dont know necessarily until it shows up in my email that we have done something. The trackers are outfitted to move very quickly. There is probably one checkpoint in washington dc, then it goes. My colleague daniel and it did a recent story about trackers. What is the new frontier, the cutting edge, what can be next in tracking technology . Mr. Brock we have done some innovation, not so much on technology, but the next thing is for trackers not to be entirely passive. I think they call it bird bugging, but to be more aggressive in asking questions. I think that is something we will see more of. The whole tracking operation is now going on on both sides. What i found is that if you innovate, you get copied. We started american bridge after the im from the campaign. After the romney campaign. Were all looking for a way to get competitive advantage. That is what we are doing in this cycle. Mr. Allen if something is fascinating and is news in the past, trackers have been trained to be quiet. Why the change in philosophy . Mr. Brock one, people get used to being tracked. So they become a more careful. If you look at Chris Christies setup, that was a question that irritated him clearly. That is why you got that moment. Jeb bush, deer in headlights on what the paycheck investment was. Allen that was from one of your people. Mr. Brock yes. Mr. Allen and governor christie, was that one of your people . Mr. Brock no, but just to illustrate that you can throw people off their game. Take some when you body saying what they really think. Mr. Allen this can come from asking more aggressive questions. Tell us when we will see this new aggressive velocity. Aggressive philosophy. Mr. Brock the details i do not know. But we are able to act much more quickly down to a matter of minutes. secretary clinton has a problem that has nothing to do with fox news. Hillary clinton loses ground with white women. This is the latest wall street journal, nbc poll. Secretary clinton losing 10 points among white women from 44 until july, going from having a favorable view to 34 . Another shocking number. In the first three months of this year, suburban women had an 18 positive view of her. Then a dramatic turn by five point, having a negative view of her. What happened . Mr. Brock i dont know what happened. There are two things about the polling. Poll numbers come down the more active you are as a candidate. That has happened in this period. Secondly, virtually every poll secretary clinton is leading. She is leading her democratic opponents. Her favorability has stayed relatively steady in the midst of the on start midst of the onslaught of the spring. At this early stage, perception of the candidates dont mean a ton. I think she has been much whether to the storm. Mr. Allen what are your worries at this point . Mr. Brock i dont have any worries. Mr. Allen you would begin first person in politics, and certainly the first dozen in the clinton camp to do so. Mr. Brock there are things that are under your control in a campaign. Sphere, we are seeing that she is doing swimmingly. But something in your control can go wrong. You can make mistakes and make a bad decision. If the question is, is there something that they are going to do to her that will make a difference, i find that unlikely. That is just having studied this on both sides. Remove her that is an clinton won reelection twice in the face of these phony scandals. We have seen this strategy. Mr. Allen the fact that she is so wellknown. The most clearly defined person in history of american politics. Is that an advantage or a vulnerability . Mr. Brock it could be both. The problem would come in in that theyople believe know Hillary Clinton and yet they dont, there is an awful lot in her 30 year Public Record that people dont know a lot about. I think that will come out in the campaign. That will be a huge plus for her. I dont know which books youve got here, but i wrote a book about Hillary Clinton back in 1996. I went through a process as a reporter of looking at the record firsthand. I was incentivized at the time. All of that didnt fit well by my colleagues at the time. Way. Ned her that the hard i still believe that today, and i think americans are seeing a lot of what i saw back then. Yes, i think it is possible. Sure. How do you think history will regard her . Expect we will win this election. Likely leadt would to three election. What was the obvious president breaking thing here i feel like people are ready for that. How powerful is that single point . Does that single fact to mean she is more likely present the him not . I think it will play a role. The history is it is very hard. O win that term i think that certainly one of the receiver ends that precedent will be broken is because people are ready. But it is not just because she is a woman. Mr. Allen that you mentioned your fascinating personal story on the bios jacket. s has beenid brock cast as the to the left. Right turn you left . David i was trying to do two things at once. I was trying to be politically active and i was trying to do journalism. At some point, whether it was in evitable or not, there was a train wreck between telling a party line and going with what you were finding in journalism. I very specifically learned in the first book that i wrote that these sources of my comments had seriously misled me. The book was written in the faith, but after the fact when i found out i was used, i dont want to say i was used, but that was part of the story and it shook my foundations. So, it was not like one day i , g, economicaid step make any sense. It was about the integrity of the people i was working with and how i was gradually becoming more complicit in that. Allen if you have a question for david brock, fraser hand and will bring you the microphone. Interestingnk the thing and what i am going to look for is i will be watching jeb bush and his wife. Political story of last week has been the way Hillary Clinton took him on and shredded his reputation as a moderate. Showed him to be the reactionary that he is. Showed that what he stands for almost know, dickensian in bed together almost waiting for him to start advocating debtor prisons. Minus. Omney is what did he do when there almost a technical knockout from hillary . He did nothing. It showed he was unable to stand up to hillary. As she was backstage, she attacked him and he did not respond. David the only thing that happened later, was somehow there was a breach of civility here, and that read to me as Hillary Clinton should defer to me. Statement. A classist the contradiction is that, you want to stay above the fray and you get hit and you crumble like he did, that can show you to be very weak and tepid. On the other hand, if you get in the fray, that is against your strategy. For tonightoking is, is there going to be a republican who stands up there. I am the guy who can stand up to illary, because mr. Allen mr. Bush has said in the past he wants to run a joyful campaign. In the tradition of the wnder and gentler from h bush. The compassionate conservative. The question is, you know, how do you handle the contradiction of doing that indie primary . At the end of the day, you know, i think that we will see tonight is their stylistic differences. But basically, on every issue they are all the same. Jeb, too. Mr. Allen do you worry more about marco rubio or scott walker . Aboutould be worried either one. Then i would not very earlier, it was not that i thought the election would be a cakewalk. You have to be prepared for any eventuality. It is a hard election to predict. If you follow the republican tradition, you would think that that would be jeb bush. But i think anything could happen. It could be back in 1954 around him. I do not know. I mean that an insurgent, the couldablishment candidate end up with the nomination. Mr. Allen if we use the 1954 generalization for the election, that would mean somebody who has a 45 standing . brock mr. On if Hillary Clinton becomes president , will your . David brock i am very satisfied with the impact were having as independent organizations and, if we are successful in aiding her in the election, i think the next half will be, you know, you could still have a republican congress. Rough terrain. To try our role would be to ensure she is trying to govern successfully. Keeping track of the press, keeping track of the republican organization. One is an ethics watchdog. We do some independent journalism as well. I would want to put that to work. Allen if she loses, will you do . David brock that is a good question. I am not planning for that so i am not really thinking about that. Mr. Allen do you think you will be unlikely to remain in washington . David brock not necessarily. 1994, go back to if you right now, go back, we were very young and kerry to protect john effectively. We have recently done the same for president obama with land parenthood. The records were not founded around any particular candidate. They will live on, no matter what i do. Mr. Allen you mentioned the record. Where do you see the line between you can what you can and what you cannot do. Ourd brock the line is communications are through the media and through the internet. What were not doing our big advertising campaigns. Pacs are doing big advertising campaigns. We are extremely busy, we have a lot to do. Allen you have a book coming in about six weeks that you worked very hard on. Killing thed messenger the right wing plot hijackil hillary and yhour government. What is this book about . David brock it is about how the ark of scandalmongering has developed since i was one of the people who invented it, if you will, through my time working with these progressive organizations to fight all of that. It is the arc by the guy who invented it. It has three parts. One, for those who read blinded it takes you from 2002 to the present. Two, it was based in part on a speech i gave at the Clinton Library in the spring of 2013 and i am trying to update my critique of the right wing conspiracy and where it is at today. And three, which was touched on, is what is the republican playbook against hillary and why is it all b. S. . Id take you through all the sort of scandals. Mr. Allen how much of it is value of thathe is, you know, if people start to understand what propaganda is, then it ceases to have an effect over time. I am trying to precondition people to understand, we have seen this for almost 25 years now. We know what it is. It is nothing to be concerned about. Mr. Allen as we say goodbye, you have had an apartment in new york for a while, what is it like . David brock i love it. It is a great balance with washington. Working up there, i raise a lot of money. , theres more to do. Mr. Allen you talk about the balance. What is the difference in the culture . David brock well, you know, d. C. Can be our work and no play. A bit of both. Mr. Allen what do you like to do . David brock no are a lot of places to go to dinner. Since 1986, washington has gotten better. To new yorku can go and have a great dinner almost anywhere. Mr. Allen anybody who has visited you out work knows , we have about 250 people in all these organizations with the exception of the trackers that are here. The total is 251. Mr. Allen what is tobys role in the conspiracy . [laughter] david brock i just hope he is not a double agent. Mr. Allen i would like to thank our friends at bank of america for making this possible. I would like to thank my friend to put this on. And david brock, thank you. And joy the debate. [applause] caps on politico. Com after the debate for a post game. Come see us. We will see you then. In his weekly address, president obama talks about Voting Rights. Senator bob corker has the republican response, talking about the iran Nuclear Agreement. President obama hi, everybody. The right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights of any democracy. Yet for too long, too many of our fellow citizens were denied that right, simply because of the color of their skin. Fifty years ago this week, president Lyndon Johnson signed a law to change that. The Voting Rights act broke down legal barriers that stood between millions of African Americans and their constitutional right to cast ballot. It was, and still is, one of the greatest victories in our countrys struggle for civil rights. But it didnt happen overnight. Countless men and women marched and organized, sat in and stood up, for our most basic rights. For this they were called agitators and unamerican, they were jailed and beaten. Some were even killed. But in the end, they reaffirmed the idea at the very heart of america; that people who love this country can change it. Our country is a better place because of all those heroes did for us. But as one of those heroes, congressman john lewis, reminded us in selma this past march, theres still work to be done fifty years after the Voting Rights act, there are still too many barriers to vote, and too many people trying to erect new ones. Weve seen laws that roll back early voting, force people to jump through hoops to cast a ballot, or lead to legitimate voters being improperly purged from the rolls. Over the years, we have seen provisions specifically designed to make it harder for some of our fellow citizens to vote. In a democracy like ours, with a history like ours, thats a disgrace. Thats why, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights act, im calling on congress to pass new legislation to make sure every american has equal access to the polls. Its why i support the organizers getting folks registered in their communities. And its why, no matter what party you support, my message to every american is simple get out there and vote not just every four years, but every chance you get. Because your elected officials will only heed your voice if you make your voice heard. The promise that all of us are created equal is written into our founding documents but its up to us to make that promise real. Together, lets do what americans have always done lets keep marching forward, keep perfecting our union, and keep building a better country for our kids. Thanks everybody. Have a great weekend. Sen. Corker im senator bob corker from tennessee, and im honored to serve as the chairman of the Senate Foreign relations committee. Over the last several weeks, congress has been reviewing the Nuclear Agreement between iran, the United States, and other world powers. The deal has profound implications for the safety, stability, and security of our country and our allies. And it deserves close scrutiny from congress on behalf of the American People. That is why despite stiff initial opposition from the white House Republicans and democrats in the house and Senate Overwhelmingly passed a bill to force the president to submit the nuclear deal to congress so lawmakers can review it, debate it, and vote. As we evaluate this deal, we must understand the character and nature of the iranian regime. This is the same regime that today remains the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world. It is the same regime that is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of u. S. Troops in iraq. And it is the same regime that is funding terrorist groups like hamas and hezbollah and syrias dictator bashar al assad. The iranian Supreme Leader applauds those who chant death to america and we know they threaten the state of israel as they stoke violence and instability throughout the region. That is why the stakes of this nuclear deal are so high and the consequences are so great. Over the years, iran has routinely violated International Agreements through development of an Illicit Nuclear program that included covert facilities and previous work on a Nuclear Weapon. In response, the United States, led by efforts in congress, built an International Sanctions regime to isolate iran economically, imposing a severe cost on their country that ultimately brought iran to the negotiating table. In 2012, president obama declared that he would only accept a deal requiring iran to end their nuclear program. It was a goal that both republicans and democrats rallied behind, and still do today. Thats why there is bipartisan concern with the deal that has been presented. Rather than end Irans Nuclear program, this deal allows them to industrialize it over time with our approval. Instead of the once promised anytime, anywhere inspections, this agreement gives iran nearly a month of advanced notice to hide any evidence of developing a Nuclear Weapon. And this deal wont allow a single u. S. Inspector on the ground, relying on an arm of the un to conduct those inspections. Even worse, there are two secret side deals we cant ever see that appear to restrict inspectors access to key sites. And after only nine months, all major sanctions will be relieved. At that point, the leverage shifts from us to iran. Iran will get access to roughly 100 billion in cash within a few months, maybe nine, some of which it will use to help Fund Terrorism and instability. Over the next decade, it will gain hundreds of billions of dollars of additional funds. And we will have paved the way for iran to have an internationallyapproved nuclear program. Iran will go from a weakened state to an economicallyrobust country, without being forced to change any of its roguish, destructive behavior. The president has said repeatedly that this is a choice between accepting this deal or going to war. It is not. Throughout the negotiations, the administration routinely asserted that no deal is better than a bad deal and threatened to walk away if necessary. So clearly there was always another option for the white house and it wasnt war. Our nations top military general also confirmed that such a stark choice between this deal or war was never discussed during his conversations with the president. And in addition, the administration, iran, and our partners have known for several months that congress would have a role to play in whatever the United States will accept in the final agreement. Unfortunately, the administration has tried to undermine the spirit of the law by going straight to the un for approval in hopes of pressuring congress to accept it. Congress must not be intimidated by this. The real decision for lawmakers isnt this deal or war. The real decision is whether congress believes this deal is in our national interest. Do we believe this deal will prevent iran from getting the capability to develop a Nuclear Weapon . Do we believe this deal will make america safer . When Congress Returns in september, it will consider a resolution to disapprove of the iran deal. This decision should not be taken lightly. It could be one of the most consequential votes we cast in our time in public service. There is perhaps no greater geopolitical issue facing the world today than preventing a nucleararmed iran. And so we owe it to the American People to have a thorough and thoughtful debate. Thank you for listening. It is an honor to speak with you in this way and it is a great privilege to serve the people of tennessee. On the next washington journal, july job numbers and the state of the economy.
