The american dream. What does it look like when it does not work and when it does . When i think about a time when it did not work, i will never forget the experience is my mother had growing up in poverty in eastern arkansas. She was one of eight kids, three of whom died in childhood. Not child earth, childhood. Her father died when she was 10. There was no educational opportunity. There was not social security. She chopped cotton, picked strawberries. When my dad met her at the age of 17, he said her hands felt like the bark of a tree. She gave me the energy i have today to be standing in front of you. But it was Franklin Roosevelts programs and the Democratic Party that gave people in that part of america the safety net under them and the chance for true fairness. [applause] senator webb when it works, i think of the journey of my wife. In 1975, when the coming us the communists took over the anon, her family went into the south china sea. They did not know whether they were going to live or die. We had no legal obligation to go out and save hundreds of thousands of vietnamese and take them to refugee camps. Bring them into this country. But we had a moral obligation. They took her family off the ocean. She went to two different refugee camps. She grew up in new orleans and started working in a shrimp factory. We could have said, as we hear people say, wait a minute. We dont have any obligation to these beninese. Vietnamese. They are not areour kind. But guess what . They make some of the greatest americans in this country today. She worked, she studied rita she ended up at the university of michigan and now law school. She had a fair shot. She has lived the american dream. That is what i am hoping for when i tell you i would like to be your president. That is the vision i have for this country. Sunday at 8 00 eastern on American History tv on cspan 3. Now the former director of the Israeli Missile Defense Organization outlines some of the threats ivan iran pose today. This was part of a series on nuclear deterrence, Missile Defense, proliferation and arms control. The National Defense Industrial Association and the reserve Officers Association hosted this hourlong event. We want to welcome you this morning. My name is peter huessy. On behalf of our associations, i want to thank you all and our sponsors especially orfriends from the Israeli Embassy for being here today. I want to thank two of my former missile information Defense Group colleagues and friends, allison and john, formerly with lockheed martin. I want to thank them for being here today as well. And i want to say hello to the heffed of our Government Affairs program at the air force association that is joining us here today. Uzi is in many peoples minds the father of Missile Defense in israel. He was head of the Missile Defense Organization Office in israel. He speaks around the world on missile developments in the middle east and their threats to both the United States and our alleys, in particular israel, as well as being a Missile Defense expert and one of our dear friends and colleagues coming all the way from israel to be with us today. Please give a warm welcome to uzi. [applause] thank you peter. It is a privilege and pleasure to be in this great venue. I try to be here once a year to update you people about the recent things and the threat and Missile Defense in the middle east. This time i chose to update you on the spread of missile in ivan other warring radical militias. They are now too numerable to name. The main point is integrated space and missile program. I will try to show you two programs are not parallel. They are actually the same program. Finally a few words about focusing on Missile Defense. When the iran agreement was concluded, i think it was concluded. Not sure, but it is taken as concluded, i was morales on my flight here. So it doesnt doctor i was more or lesson my flight here. I am note aware of many of the details. So i have no prepared remarks on that. But i will be happy to answer questions to the best of my ability. Not the details, which i dont know, but about the implications. If you have any questions, hold on. An excellent question needs slides and dont have slides. Let me speak first about rockets and missiles on radical and warring parties in the middle east. Let me show several pictures. Here is a picture from the sinai, a recent one and it shows this. Last week there was a big attack by isis in the sinai in an egyptian town. Very nice town by the beach. We used to go there in he would other teams. Here are guard rockets aimed at israel from a new front in the sinai. But this makes sense. Isis dont like us and they fire rockets at us. What is more bizarre is this picture. This shows isis firing rockets not at us, but at jimenez. I cant believe my years when i am saying that. But here they are firing rockets at jimenez. Some of the rockets i cannot identify. But you can see the emblem here. Here is the plaque flock. This was last winter in the snowy wastes of upper lebanon. To show you how complex the picture is now in the middle east. I am revisiting something which i showed a few years ago. This is Ballistic Missiles in the hands of isis. The story goes like this. This building is what is purported to be a Syrian Nuclear reactor that was taken out, so it was reported, according to news media. It was immediately the ruins were demolished by the sasd regime and bulldozed over before the i. E. A. Could come and inspect it. Satellite photo shows the building with the blue was built on that side. It was a mystery what was in that building. Two years ago they published a video showing them occupying that same blue building and finding in it scud missiles. What was amazing was the launching mechanism was not the original mechanism. It was something new. It was designed locally by iraqi engineers or syrian engineers. Those were iraqi missiles to be used against israel. But that could be propaganda. This was the last time we saw those missiles until about a half year ago. Here they are again in the hands of isis. So now have scud missiles. They are not operational, but you know that isis is drawing a lot of volunteers, a lot of talent from all over the islamic world, and they have missile experts there. It could be that the missile will be made operational and could be used. Here we have isis with a Ballistic Missile. Speaking about rockets and missiles in the hands of militias, a whole zoo of missiles is now appearing in iraq apparently home made by shiah ranaudoian people iranian. The rocket engine is very big solid propel ant. It is probably a 600 millimeter iranian rocket engine supplied by them to the local militia, who used it into all kinds of designs. There were dozens of designs. This is the regular iraqi army. You can see a truck on which a very capablelooking launcher is installed. The same rocket is installed here on some kind of improvised truck. You see all the shops in iraq are producing rockets. This is another type of rocket on a regular luncher. A good luncher like this one here with flags. I looked it up on the flags of the world on google. You find all kind of strange flags there. One that caught my eye was a militia called shabac. Well it is not our shabak. It is an ethnic group called the shabak associated with the occurred. They have their own militia with their own flags. There are more of those zoos of rockets. Look at this strange animal. The rocket and the huge warhead. A short range rocket in order to face in close quarters. All those flags are well identified. They are shiah militias in iraq. Look at this strange beast here. I am showing you a very short collection of dozens of rocketses that are all gearing up to fight isis in western iraq. Not very successful as of now. Talking about creativity in syria local rocket production goes on. Here i am showing you picks out of a huge selection. I could sit here and show you for two hours all this fascinating stuff. You see home made rockets in northern syria. The added zest is the warhead is a canister of cooking gas. There is a short video showing it being tested. It is a fuel airborne. It destroys buildings. It is amazing. Their creativity is noticeable. Here it is being loaded into the launcher. This pipe is not a tuiasosopo or a gun. It is just a pipe. It is flying on the rockets of its own. While they are doing that, the syrian army is increasing its firepower with the help of outside forces. The latest edition that we see is this russianmade 220 millimeter mlrs. The last time we saw it in action was in georgia in 2008 very impressive firepower. But look at this emblem mere. Lets see a closeup of it. Here is a closeup of that emblem. This is a syrian officer. This is the imbleck you find of the russian grooves. Directly out of the russian army goes that shows how desperate the situation is there. They ship them in there even without repainting them, and they immediately go to battle. That is the other side. We will meet this launcher somewhere else in the middle east a few slides down in the show. I am talking about home made rockets. Here is another set of home made rockets in yemen. In yemen too, the rocket industry is kicking up. These are from iraqi war shops. This is very similar to one of the rockets that we saw here. Look at that. That is very similar to that. It seems to me fingers prints of iranian capability here in yemen. It is a active arena for rocket fire on both sides. Here are Yemeni Government missiles before the outbreak of the civil war. They had missiles. These Ballistic Missiles both supplied by the soviet union and then north korea. If you remember there were two yemens. There was north and south, and in 1998 they had the civil war and they fired missiles at each other, russiasupplied missiles. They caused damage and casualties. In one case it killed 32 people. Then they fired a 121. It is a Counter Value weapon with a range of 120 kilometers. That is equiping the syrian army. It was used to good effect in trait against georgia by the russias. Here it is in an arms desmond stration in a precivil war yemeni army. As soon as the intervention started. Saudi declared they had destroyed Ballistic Missile goes in order for them not to fall in the hands of the rebels. The next time we saw was a scud in the hand of the rebels. It seems to be completely undestroyed. Going from somewhere to somewhere. The smart was taken from a smartphone of some driver on the road. I added here another picture. If you remember that sim, here it is again, but now in yemen. We never heard that the Yemeni Government had them before. It was in yemeni and rebel hands. We never heard that the Yemeni Government had it. Maybe they had it unadvertised and it fell into the hands of the rebels, or one can conjure some connection here that once this weapon appears in syria, it can go down via iran down to yemen. So maybe newly spride russian systems here. Going back to that scud very unsurprisingly, the next thing we heard was interception of the scud fired at saudi arabia by the yemeni weapons. They say they fired several. The saudis announced the shooting down of one. They didnt show i looked around and couldnt find pictures of the debris, but anyway there is no rope to doubt the claim. They choate down one scud fired from somewhere in yemen into a town with a very indent name hiding the largest Saudi Air Force base which is the main Saudi Air Force base guarding the south end of the red sea here. So there it is, and it was a success. Congratulations to the people. They did a good job. Owneding this part of creativity, some creativity in gaza. Last week they celebrated a year for operation protective edge. They showed two new missiles which may other may not be operational. Probably not yet. They calm them kasam. Here is the rock almost touching his belly. Look how big this rocket is. They are going to full size now apparently. They are named a and sa, the first letters of the two sha hids. They were in the hands of the hamas, targeted and killed by us in the war. The shorter one can go to about the tel aviv area. The size means this is not just a dog and pony show and it represents operational thinking on their side. I speculate that they will go for larger warheads figuring out that clearing out most of the things that fall down the rest have too small warheads to cause damage. Since there is a leakage they may tried to fire bigger doses. We are outguessing hamas. Maybe that is not what they think, but maybe it is a possibility. From here i want to go to the iranian integrated missile program. I usually do this one a year. There is a tremendous amount of things that happened last year outside of the limelight and i want to draw your attention to that. It is proceeding at an accelerated pace, not just a regular pace. The main highlights are those. First we see an upgrading of a generation four missile into precision, precisely guided must innings. We see that going backwards to the older teams. We see the development of defeating tactics of Missile Defense. The Missile Defense is built in the gulf by the gulf states and saudi arabia. They are aware of that and building the capabilities to defeat of that. A tremendously high rate of production in Ballistic Missiles. Programs there is a blip of information that may hint of exporting iranian rocks to north korea. He usually think about it the other way around from north korea to iran. There may hint of reverse of direction but i am not sure. I could be reading the signs wrongly. The Cruise Missile is coming to the fore. I am talking about the one that can go the nap of the earth at some improvised air target. Last but not least acquiring the technologies for global range Ballistic Missiles through the Space Program. I will show you how. Lets look at the precision rockets. Iran was playing something which i showed you before, but i want to reiterate that. Technically, they are for us a mortal enemy. They hate us and dont want to see us striving. But i am an engineer. I cannot avoid admiring good engineering work. They took a basic rocket that was a bombardment rocket, and then they added precision to that. They added precision all kinds of ways. There are five or six versions of it now. The basic air frame is the 624inch rocket, a heavy rocket. The rapings vary between 250 and 300 kilometers. Warhead is more than half a ton. It is a hefty warhead. If it would fall on a population area, it would destroy a block. So it is a blockbuster. They can hit specific buildings and specific targets. It could be anywhere from 10 to 50 meters. That is not a terror weapon. It is a military weapon. It is mainly designed against new allies and forces in the gulf area. Look at the map and look at the bases there. They are all within range of these kind of ranges. Now with precision they can select the target. They have the same weapons in lebanon and syria that can target bases and strategic targets and installations. There is an antiship version. There are two different versions. Just to show you how their minds work, here is an illustration of an iranian illustration of a precision rocket attacking a ship, and that happens to be a u. S. Ship. It is an illustration, not a real thing. But that is what they are thinking about and training for. In a south korean movie about north korean missiles, i found a short clip. That got exciting. A short clip, to my amazement of an iranian rocket being featured there. It could be that the editor of the south korean video didnt know was not a technical expert. Or maybe he was playing a north korean video. I am not sure what it was. And the north korean showed, if it was a north korean video, showed an iranian rocket. Look at that. There are not many deserts in north korea. It could be a mistake. It could be that i am seeing the shadows of real mountains. But it could be also that the North Koreans are thinking about acquiring a system. But i have nothing to confirm that. For them it is a very important addition. It makes sense. Again, i am not saying that it is happening. I am turning your attention to the fact that it could happen and maybe they are thinking about it. As i say, reversing the trend, not from north korea to iran, but from iran to north korea. There you see the precision going into all the iranian rocket systems, weapon systems. Here is a picture of an exhibition of missile achievements in may of 2014, last year, about a year ago. It featured all kinds of rockets, but what caught our eyes here in israel was this rocket. This is a small rocket. It now 600 millimeterers. It is now 300 millimeterers. They are miniaturizing. It is becoming a precision weapon. A year later we saw it flies. Notice the winglets here. It is recognized by gmls precision. Those guys are developing major power cameability. And it is going upscale too. We heard from this man last year in his article about about the dismantling an old version of a missile that he spoke about it, he didnt show any illustrations. I edited this, this is not how it looks, just to show you the notion. Once they do that, and if its successful, its not an easy program. Then they can make rescission attacks pieces and attacks. Think about that. They dont need nuclear weapons. You can paralyze a country saudi arabia, israel, or any other is me any other enemy. Egypt too. This is a weapon that can paralyze a country. The fitting missiledefense, two strategy. One strategy we will talk about later. Another strategies warheads. They love those very fancy names. Like the way the u. S. Loves greek words. They love those very symbolic emotional names. Of course, this is an illustration done by an illustrator that doesnt know much physics. The idea is clear here. Arms exposition in may 2014. We see another version, yet another version. They painted bombs on top of the shroud. Other fitting strategy of the missiledefense is quantities. I ensure you again and again this is a very recent exposure. Yet more and more rowhouses with warehouses with completed rockets. They are not the same. Two of those are aboveground. This is underground, this is a tunnel. Here they show another missile 800 kilometers. Designed against soldiers, not against us. It covers all the major targeting saudi arabia. He overwhelms missiledefense with quantities. The long expected strategic missile, which was anticipated more than 10 years ago. Sovietmade. When the soviet union broke up, some of the forces of the soviet union. There was a Strategic Bomber and nuclear equipped crews missiles. At that one, they had 500 of them called the kh55. About 20 of them or so found their way to north korea china and iran. Three people were indicted for that in russia. All of them mysteriously died. And nobody knows how it was done. But it was done. Obviously, from that point it was obvious it was too small to use operationally. From that point on, i was predicting a year after year that the appearance of the 2255 kilometers would look like the soviet one. In 2012, the iranians disclosed the program but did not show a picture. They claimed a range of 2000 kilometers. I will explain why this number is kind of the holy number, in the political sense. The us made it ranges about 2500 kilometers. And lo and behold, there it is like a magician. A few months ago, here it is. But for some reason which i cannot explain. It is called something else. The range without announced. Was not announced. Tdk age 55. It is a spitting image. Obviously this is nothing chinese copy. It is an iranian a copy. They have jet engines. Small jet engines from china. Small jet engines is a very clever tricky thing to do. Only one company in the u. S. That specializes in that. They may have borrowed a french design. The senate missile, same length, same diameter exactly in the same place. The engines in the same place. Except this is landbased. It takes off on the land. Weve a short video if it roles. This is a iranian tv. The wings are the same place. This is an achievement, a major technical achievement. It is not copying. It is even more difficult to design a new one. Bandit designing anyone. Than designing a new one. I take my hat off to the guys who did it technically. You can see the russian influence. This is a groundbased missile. They did it to design a booster. Here is the russian booster. The missile is different. Look at the booster. It is not the same , but you can see the russian style think of of engineering. Russian a style fingerprint of engineering. Its too small for a nuclear bomb. Lets go back to this 2000 kilometers. The iranian holy number. We are not attacking you, we are just threatening israel. 2000 kilometers is good enough. Even if they go to the west side of iran, they cannot move much. It is not germany. With this capability of cuirseruise missile which could be airborne. They are all hypnotized by missiles. If they adopt an airborne version of more missiles, they can flight to thumb and kilometers. They can flight 2000 kilometers. That will cover all of europe. Under the radar, out of the tension. They are developing capability which i suggest people Pay Attention to. In the Space Program they managed to fly into orbit another satellite here. The latest one was about three years ago unadvertised. They had three failures, which i showed you. Again, you can admire their persistence. They fired again and again and again. And finally, they had another success. One can learn a lot from the mindset. In the west, we dont have this tradition. When we have a major failure, we stop and go back to the drawing board and see what happened. Your descent into these test range again and again until they were successful, which shows again this is not exactly a civilian program. I dont have to go into that to show its not a civilian program. Its coordinated with the rest of the defense establishment with their supreme leader, the supreme commander. Its interested integrated into the totality of the missile program. Here is the space launcher. Many examples of who is the boss . They are announcing a new test range for the Space Program. That shows you how symbiotic these programs are. Here is the new space launcher, secondgeneration. The picture doesnt do it justice. It is huge. The diameter is exactly like the north korean. Only about 8090 tons. The spitting image of the North Koreans space facility with the same tower, same crane here. The iranians showed something surprising. They want to put out in iranian in space by 2020. Here is the space capsule they call it e1. It is two meters. It reminded me of the old times. Lets go back to their program. They are going to do a suborbital by 2016 next year. I dont think it will happen. This is an orbital test. Those guys know what they are doing. This is a regular suborbital flight. They did not mention of the range. 7500 kilometers. There is an emergency parachute. That means they really thought about this. It might be of what the u. S. Did in soviet space. What you did, you took the only rocket available at the time, the redstone. Walk it up into a launcher. This so could take one man to suborbital ranges. Very elementary. I assume this is what the iranians are having in mind. A very short capsule, stays in space. What was the americans next step . To go into orbit. That is obviously what they have in mind. They want to be in orbit by 2020. What is going to be under it . General hassan was killed in a huge explosion in 2011. It broke windows. Something huge exploded. Probably something to do with a big, solid propellant that exploded. I assume its a solid propellant. Hints are coming out of an advanced version of the space launcher. Taking one, and perhaps making 34 out of it. I think the equivalent of the alice moves like this. Of the atlas. Around 2. 5 meters, which is not far from the 2. 4 meters. There is another hit that this is what is going on. They have yet another space launch. The new one is built not far away from here. Yet another one, and huge. It boggles the mind. This is the launching pad. 200 meters by 150 meters. Solid concrete. Six feet of concrete. Its built to absorb huge explosions. Again, solid propellant comes to mind. Another thing, its built by the Iranian Revolutionary guard, not by the space industry. There are all of these clues coming to my mind. This is the roadmap. The bigger one is liquid. The next one will be a huge solid propellant. A huge launcher which will take an immense space capsule. They will have all the technological elements for cicmb. Replace the men with the bomb and you have an icbm. They hide all the Building Blocks to do icbm, if and when they decide to do so. An integrated missile in Space Program leading to one hand, stability, on the other hand, to use icbms. Im not sure they have made the decision yet. Here is a publication fro mm mda about their main bases. What is located in saudi arabia. Another is located to threaten israel, and potentially europe. What does israel do about it . I dont want to go into the whole israel missiledefense program. It is not the first, but in very successful test. We had a short video here. Unfortunately no soundtrack. This is a official movie was released. You can see the targets. A huge black target. The idea that you fire a Ballistic Missile towards israel. You have to overcome reluctance. The interceptor the missile is going up to the interceptor. There is a lot of hype here. This is marketing so excuse me for the hype. Here is another photoshop. We do it too. Looks great in conferences. Here is the village they are taking over. And low and behold, here is the target coming down. The target presents real interBallistic Missile. This is hit to kill, no warhead. Any critic of israel missiledefense can look for themselves. They hit each other. That is it. Another achievement is that the iron dome has undergone several testing upgrades. They are not available to the public. Recently, another capability was added. We have published this promo. Remember we had mass uavs moving into israel last year. We had to shoot them down. It puts it to very good use. If you remember in a september that is the focus of that system. My concluding remark. I took you on a tour of the middle east. All of these things happening in the last year. What is my conclusion from that . The only conclusion i have is that like in the middle east is not a picnic. [laughter] tel aviv was under missile attack last year. Tel aviv is functioning. You can see traffic on the roads. The town is being attacked. Our Missile Defense is working and life goes on. It is a madhouse, but we try to live our life and defend ourselves. Without, i like to conclude. [applause] and now i will open for questions. I know you have a questions about the iranian deal. [laughter] i wanted to ask about is really capabilities against the terrain hugging ground launch Cruise Missiles. Whether they are launched from a rent, or lets say a cargo ship in the mediterranean. Launched from iran. Is a capability that the iron dome has . Uzi rubin a good question. One of my slides was about that. But let me answer it in two points. This is designed against cruise myself Cruise Missiles. We have this in our sights and are working on the solution. A company tracks all the ships in the world. And they have software to track codes. It would be hard for anyone to take a ship out of normal behavior. Your technical ability is highly regarded. What is your feeling that the removal of the rocket embargo that is being brought up now will that wreck any havoc in iran . Uzi rubin i can answer in short with what i showed you. Extrapolate to that what can happen without an embargo. I was happy to see that the embargo continues for at least five years. Im not so sure this morning. But if its true, according to the report of the red, and i only read it here. The idea is unacceptable to any soldier. I appreciate your generals up in arms saying no no, dont do it right now. Without in a you can extrapolate on that. Let me say some remarks about the iranian deal. When i look at this i am not an expert to talk about the details of the nuclear part of the deal. Whether they are good or bad will they stop the iranians for five years, 10 years, were not at all, will they cheat or not cheat, i am not going to ask about it. But i want to turn your attention to, in my opinion, is the real indication of the deal. Its not its the deal part of it. An article in the wall street journal turned my attention to the fact that the deal itself is an historical event. Regardless of how effective the is, whether it is even airtight its only the United States, not the p5 1. Its between iran and the u. S. The iranian revolution was supported by the United States. After the wars came the media capture of the u. S. And jewish embassies. Harming and voice is a declaration of war. Harming envoys. Once upon a time, you would killed the envoy of the other side. Sometimes they would adjust this figure they would just disfigure them. Imprisoning also means a declaration of war. This deal is shifting the relation. What is the logic behind it . I found it encapsulated in an article. I violently disagree with the authors views but he has a way with words. I paraphrase it for you in two short sentences. Iran wants to over one of the middle east and destroy israel. But apparently for president obama, iran is a small state that doesnt have the ability to do it. Who is right . If president obama is right, then this deal will not make a regime change, but will change the regime. Then it will start dealing with its own internal problems. This deal is opening for a better middle east. If we are wrong, than what we have are the good intentions. This is an answer to what will happen with an embargo. More questions. That is going to make your weekend very pleasant. [laughter] i want to thank you. For the record, for those of you interested in the iranian agreement. There is a clause after the fiveyear mark in the eight euros mark and it says or, when the iaea declares the Iranian Nuclear program peaceful, at that time, which is slated for december 15 2015 which ever is earlier, the embargo on Ballistic Missile parts and conventional arms sales goes away. That is whether or not the iaea declares iran in compliance with the agreement as a peaceful and legal agreement on december 15, 2015, the embargoes can go away. The thing is that this entire agreement has those kinds of on the one hand, on the other hand, and the two cannot always be reconciled. I want to thank you for coming all the way from israel. It is an honor to have user. I want to thank you for all of your remarkable insights into the middle east and Ballistic Missiles and the defense. Would you all give a warm thank you. [applause] labor secretary thomas perez talks about the minimum wage overtime pay, family leave, and employment numbers and their impact on the overall economy. Newsmakers, sunday at 10 00 a. M. And 6 00 p. M. Eastern on seas. On cspan. This sunday, on q and a, artist and journalist Molly Crabapple underuse of drawings to tell investigative stories from around the world. Conciliation might mean reading a book about the black panther. The pelican bay is not alone in this. Around the country, you can land in solitary for your art, youre reading, your gender status, your sexual orientation, or your friends. I go to a sketchbook and i draw. It is to build rapport with people. Very often, when you have a big camera, it puts a big distance between you and the person. You are taking these images. They cannot see what you are taking. Whereas, when you draw, it is a vulnerable thing. They can see what you are doing. If you suck, they can tell you so. It is more of an interchange. Most people have not been drawn before. Most are delighted to be drawn. I like talking to them while i do it. Sunday night, at a eastern and specific desk and pacific. All five democratic primary candidates were on the program for the 20 15th Iowa Democratic hall of fame dinner in cedar rapids. The annual fundraiser honors state democratic leaders. The president ial candidates include former rhode island senator and governor lincoln chafee, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, former Maryland Governor martin omalley, vermont secretary vermont senator Bernie Sanders and jim webb. Thank you dr. Mcguire. Thank you very much. Thank you dr. Mcguire. Congratulations to all of the hall of fame inductees. A great group of people working so hard to get democrats elected in iowa. Congratulations inductees. Thank you for inviting me to this special night in cedar rapids. Tonight, you will hear from five good candidates. With a wide range of passions and experiences. And it is good to be in iowa. I am a College Wrestler and i have long admired the many hawkeye and cycling champions. [applause] as you may know, i am the only president ial candidate who has been a mayor, the u. S. Senator and governor. Throughout these experiences ive tried to earn a reputation for courage and honesty. I also have shown strong convictions sometimes under enormous political pressures. I am proud of my long support for beneficial social programs that have helped build the middle class. My long support for tax structure for the well where the wealthy pay their fair share. [applause] my long support for raising the minimum wage. My long support for protecting the environment and addressing climate change. [applause] my long support for Quality Health care for all. My long support for womens rights to choose. My long support for lgbt rights. My long support for immigration reform. My long support for investing in public education. My long support for investing in our roads, bridges, rail lines dance, and all public infrastructure. And my record will stand up to scrutiny on these and many other issues. In this campaign, i also place a high priority on addressing what is happening overseas especially in the middle east and north africa. As general betray us famously asked during the invasion of iraq in 2003, tell me, how does this end . The 2016 president ial election will go a long way to answering that question. How does this send . How does this end . We have a choice. Prosperity through peace or work. We had great news about the breakthrough with iran. Lets give all of those who made that happen a big camp especially president obama and his team. [applause] avoiding work is worth every bit of our energy. The iran agreement was crafted with the help of russia, china the united kingdom, france, and germany. This is the right way to make the world safer. [applause] working with our United Nations partners. This is the model, the sensible path for america. Leading, with strong, smart, patient diplomacy. Absolutely. This is also a different course than the failed, arrogant unilateral bellicose republican approach to the world. That is the choice we have in 2016. We need to reject once and for all the belligerent advocates of conflict. As governor and senator, i attended to many funerals for servicemen and Service Women killed in iraq. A sad and avoidable chapter in american foreignpolicy. As one who voted against the iraq war as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a chair of the middle east subcommittee, i have long been supportive of the course that president obama and secretary kerry are now charting. Not only with iran, but also with cuba. This has been a historic few weeks. If we are smart with our diplomacy, we can avoid these endless wars and create savings that can be better spent at home. Diplomacy is the ultimate test of leadership. [applause] thank you i would democrats. Leadership is also about seeing the future. I see a future with a strong and well supported diplomatic corps that is a compliment to our military strength. I see a future where america is the United Nations leader working with Mutual Respect on climate change, world food and health issues, and fair trade. I see a future where less of our resources are going to quagmires overseas and more are going towards students getting their education without crushing debt. More going to struggling families so that they can have true Economic Opportunities and have a chance to buy their own home. More going to help our seniors enjoyed the dignified retirement that they have worked so hard to earn. [applause] i see a future where the word coexist really mean something. Where those of different races religious leaders, genders, sexual orientation, and cultural backgrounds can live and work together. I see a future where once again everyone has a chance at the american dream. That is the future that i see. The way that we are going to do that is to fear is to first of all believe it is possible. I believe it is possible and that is why im running for president. I respectfully ask for your support. [applause] we have a special country and a special planet. Let us take care of both. Thank you i would democrats thank you iowa democrats. Have a good evening. [applause] thank you so much governor chafee. That was wonderful. And now, i am proud to welcome our next keynote beaker, Hillary Rodham clinton. [applause] [cheers] [chanting] as first lady, as senator from new york, and as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton has been a tenacious advocate for women and their families. And a source of american strength around the world. Throughout her life, she has been devoted to the cause of human rights and equality. Working to make our world a more peaceful and inclusive place for all. She has led the fight on some of the most pressing issues of our time from education to health care and has gotten results to bring us closer to an america that where all have the opportunity to succeed. Please join me in welcoming, Hillary Rodham clinton. [applause] [cheers] mrs. Clinton thank you so much, iowa. Thank you. Thank you all. Thank you so much. It is really a great delight to be here with all of you and with my fellow candidates. I want to congratulate all of the inductees and andy, thank you for what you are doing to bring back the Democratic Party in iwatch in iowa. Just, look around this room and you can see that democrats are united, we are energized, and we are ready to win this election. [applause] now, i know and you do as well that elections are always about the future. But this time, i feel that even more powerfully. Maybe it is because our country has worked so hard to come back from the financial crisis with president obamas leadership and the determination of the american people, we are standing again. [applause] but, we are not yet running. Not the way that america should. And now, we have to choose. Whether we are going to return to the failed passed down policies that wrecked our economy before or move forward towards more prosperous future. Maybe it is the grandmother in may, but this is deeply personal. Maybe it is the grandmother in me but this is deeply personal and it is truly transformational. It anchors you in the present and you suddenly have this incredible, and amazing little person who commands a lot of attention. It also forces you to think about the future in a new way. What kind of world will be waiting for her . What kind of country will we have when she becomes an adult . What are our responsibilities to shape it . I am thinking a lot these days about my own mother and what she did for me. She abandoned and mistreated by her own family, she was out on her own by 14, working as a housemate. She did not given to bitterness or despair. I remember asking her, how did you keep your resilience, how did you keep your faith in the goodness of people and a future that would be better than the past . And here is what she said. Someone along the way believed that she mattered. A first grade teacher who saw us yet nothing to eat at lunch, and without embarrassing her brought extra food to share. The woman whose house she cleaned, suggesting she go to high school so long as her work was done. And because those people believed in her, she was able to believe in me. And to give me the great gift of believing and others and in our country. My mom was not surprised that my first job out of law school was at the childrens defense fund. She was not surprised that i spent my life fighting for women, children, families, and our country. After all [applause] that is what she taught me to do. She never stopped pushing me to fight harder for others to have the same opportunities she never had. I can still hear her saying life is not about what happens to you, it is about what you do with what happens to you so get back out there. And that is why i am here with you today. [applause] that is why i am so determined to build a better future. Not just for my granddaughter but for all of our children and grandchildren and that is why i am never going to let the republicans rip away the progress we have made. [applause] you know, we democrats are in the future business. But from the republican candidates for president , we see the opposite. They may have some fresh faces. They are the party of the past. We democrats, we look at america and we see limitless potential. We believe in a basic bargain. If you work hard and do your part, you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. And we believe that the measure of our success should be how much incomes rise for hardworking families, not just for ceos and money managers. [applause] well, republicans believe something very different. Their answer is always the same. Cut taxes for the super wealthy let big corporations right to their own rules, and that is it. Trickledown economics has to be one of the worst ideas of the 1980s. [applause] it is right up there with shoulder pads and they care. And big hair. I lived through it and there are photographs and we are not going back to that. [laughter] [applause] this past monday i laid out an agenda for raising incomes so that hardworking americans can afford a middleclass life. An agenda for strong growth fair growth, and longterm growth. That will be my mission from the first day i am president to the last. This campaign has to be about how we unlock the potential of every american. Because that is how we unlock the potential of america itself. I am having a great debate already with republicans about what that means for our country. In the past week, governor bush scrambled to explain his statement that americans need to work longer hours. He now says he just wants parttime workers to be able to find fulltime jobs. Well, so do i. There is just one problem. His policies and the policies of all of these republican candidates would make that harder. Giving more tax cuts to those at the top will not do anything for parttime workers. Rolling back rules for wall street will not help families get ahead. And getting rid of the Affordable Care act certainly will not help entrepreneurs just act just ask the folks in the sharing economy. Americans do not need lectures, they need raises. [applause] so, if republicans really want to help us, why dont they join us in breaking down the barriers so that more americans can enter and succeed in the workforce especially women. Now, i know that when i talk about this some people think, i can see it in their eyes, there she goes again with the womens issues. Well, i am not going to stop so get ready for a long campaign. [applause] you see i have this oldfashioned idea that we cannot afford to leave anyone on the sidelines and women who want to work should be able to do so without worrying every day about how they are going to take care of their child or what will happen if the Family Member gets sick. That is not a luxury. It is a growth strategy. Paid leave. Earned sick days. Childcare. Minimum wage. These are not womens issues they are family issues and they are economic issues. [applause] so i will keep fighting for them and ask you to join and i am going to keep fighting for equal pay because when women get shortchanged, families get shortchanged, and what families and when families get shortchanged, our economy and our country gets short changed. It is about our values. How we treat each other. The kind of country we want to build. On that historic day, last month, when Marriage Equality became the law of the land, [applause] republican candidates are complaining, not cheering. We even heard a call for abolishing the Supreme Court itself. Instead of trying to turn the clock back, republicans should be joining us in saying loudly and clearly note to discrimination once and for all. No to discrimination once and for all. Lgbt americans should be free, not just a marry, but to live learn, and work just like everyone else. [laughter] and then, there is immigration. We have heard a lot recently from the new republican frontrunner donald trump. Finally a candidate who cares whose hair gets more attention than mine. [laughter] but there is nothing funny about the hate he is spewing towards immigrants and their families. It really is shameful. And so is the fact that it took weeks for most of his fellow republican candidates to stand up to him. The sad truth is if you look at many of their policies, it is hard to tell the difference. Just look across the borders in wisconsin, Governor Walker kicked off his campaign by rolling back reproductive rights for women and stripping Union Workers of their rights. We do not need any more politicians who shame and blame women for making our own Reproductive Health decisions or attacking unions for fighting for middleclass jobs. [applause] and, and i know there are challenges right here in iowa because you have been talking to me about them. Just listen to this. Iowa has fewer than 750 beds for more than 128,000 people in your state with serious mental illnesses. Families worry about relatives who need help and cannot get it. And the i was i talk and the iowans i talked to do not understand why their governor is vetoing an option without looking into the alternatives. That is not all. The government also said no to investing in i was students in iowa students, teachers, and schools. Governor branstad put down your veto pen [applause] iowa families do not need a standoff, they need solutions. That is why we cannot let republicans take us back like they are trying to do. We are not going back to trickledown economics or the wild west on wall street, we are not going back to Insurance Companies charging women more for the same coverage, we are not going back to denying climate change. If you ask most of these republican candidates about that, they will say sorry, i am not a scientist. Then why do they not start listening to those who are scientists. [applause] i am not a scientist either. I am just a grandmother with two eyes and a brain and i am not going to let them take us backwards. [applause] [cheers] please, iowa democrat, join me and let us build up our party in this state and every corner of this country. Take next cool boards and statehouses all the way to the white house. I am running to make our country work for you and for every american, for the struggling, the striving, and the successful. For the factory workers in food service who have taken care of us to make. For the veterans who have served our country. For the farmers who feed us. And the Small Business owners who take a risk. For that nurses for the nurses that work at night. I am running for everyone who has ever been knocked down but has refused to be knocked out. I am running for you. We are going to build an america where we do not live anyone out or behind and if you work hard and do your part you will get ahead. And where a father can tell his daughter yes, you can be anything you want to be, even president of the United States. Thank you all very much. [applause] [cheers] hillary. [applause] i am now excited to welcome to the stage our next keynote speaker, martin omalley. [applause] throughout his 15 years of elected
