Baseball isn’t always fair. Sometimes, it’s downright cruel.
After Jacksonville scratched and clawed its way to a 5-5 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth, top-seeded Springfield erupted for 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning to end the game early, beating the Crimsons 15-5 in a regional championship game at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield on Tuesday. Jacksonville made five errors — four in the fifth inning.
“It’s frustrating because this group — you know, we’ve been better than that this year,” Jacksonville coach Cory Bunner said. “But against a really good team, they’re going to put pressure on you, and we just weren’t able to match that. They just kept hitting it around, we couldn’t make plays — it’s frustrating for the guys because they deserve better. We’ve had a really good season, especially these seniors. They’ve put a lot into the program, and you just hate to see them go out like that.”
