The Oklahoma State Department of Health said Wednesday that administration of the vaccines for the younger age group will start as soon as possible. Beginning Thursday morning, teens and their parents will be able to schedule appointments for the Pfizer vaccine through the state's vaccine scheduling portal.
“This is great news for our state,” said Keith Reed, deputy commissioner of health. “Expanding the age range for this vaccine will help us protect more people and further slow the spread of COVID-19.”
A federal advisory committee voted Wednesday afternoon to recommend the use of the Pfizer vaccine in children ages 12 to 15, and the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adopted the committee's recommendation. The Pfizer vaccine was already approved for use in anyone 16 and older; Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are for those 18 and older.
