Oklahoma has seen a dramatic drop in new COVID-19 cases. But is this drop in new cases due to people staying home and winter weather, or is it a trend in the right direction?“We’re seeing great trends. In Oklahoma, there’s been over five weeks we’ve seen a decreased instance rate,” said Dr. Aaron Wendelboe, epidemiologist and professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Public Health.Doctors and health experts said the state’s cases have dropped greatly, and Oklahoma has even hit a milestone.“Of being under 20 cases per 100,000,” Wendelboe said.According to health experts, Oklahoma is back down to where the state was in mid-June, with the positivity rate being about 12.6%. Oklahoma City, however, is at 7.5%.“We’re seeing similar trends in decreases in hospitalizations and deaths,” Wendelboe said.“Thankfully, you hear some good news today. The hospitalized patients in Oklahoma are now in the 600 range,” said Patti Davis, president of the Oklahoma Hospital Association. These health experts said the majority of this decline is credited to the vaccine and the start of herd immunity.“The rate of COVID- will continue to fall as long as the conditions to mitigate are met,” Wendelboe said. They said even after a pause on vaccines from last week’s storms, the process is going to take a while.“We’re rapidly approaching 800,00 doses,” Deputy Health Commissioner Keith Reed said.Health leaders said people can call 211 to get on a call-back list from the health department. While Oklahoma’s new and active case counts are going down, the state continues to see newly reported deaths due to the virus. The Oklahoma State Department of Health on Tuesday reported 22 additional deaths, bringing the state's death toll to 4,227.
