December has brought a new normal in daily COVID-19 cases in North Carolina, with the average 5,652 new daily cases more than 1,100 above the record for the previous nine months of the pandemic, 4,514 set on Nov. 22.
And as cases have skyrocketed, including the new record of 8,444 on Dec. 18, the number of North Carolinians dying from the virus have also reached new highs.
But an increase in deaths from the most recent spike in cases is likely weeks away, according to state health officials.
