Recently, on social media, a heated discussion broke out as to the definition of a “local” in Prince Edward County. A lifelong county resident contended that this appellation applies only to those born in the county. Those subscribing to an opposing viewpoint argued that anyone residing in the county, paying taxes here, and participating in community life is a local.
The debate then took a nasty turn when the local was told she had made a spelling error in one of her posts. She was advised to stop voicing her opinion when she obviously could not spell (or apparently reason) properly. Unfortunately, her critic made an embarrassing error of her own and shot herself in the foot. There was no spelling mistake in the post, simply the incorrect use of a homonym. Sometimes locals are more focused on getting it said than concerning themselves with secondary matters such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
