Even as vaccination efforts are launched in the region’s skilled nursing facilities, novel coronavirus cases and outbreaks continue to rise among the county’s most vulnerable populations.
For the fifth week in a row, San Diego County officials reported Thursday that there have been a record-breaking number of outbreaks among skilled nursing facilities.
There are currently 63 active outbreaks in skilled nursing facilities out of the 150 that have occurred since the beginning of the pandemic.
More than half of the coronavirus cases among skilled nursing residents, and nearly half of the cases among staff, have occurred over the past six weeks during the holiday season surge in COVID-19 infections.
