In 1095 C.E. Pope Urban II made a speech at the Council of Clermont in France, to mount the first Crusade to rescue the Holy Land from the Muslims (Seljuk Turks) and return it back to the Christians. Primarily religion and secondly economic gain would be the motivational factors to flow on from the Crusades.
By way of background leading to the Popeâs call at Clermont, the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire asked Pope Urban II to help drive the Muslims out of the Holy Land, hence the historic speech, in 1095, the Pope gave at the Council of Clermont. The Knights of Europe were promised forgiveness of their sins if they went on the crusade to rescue the Holy Land. An army of Knights, nobles and ordinary people re-captured Jerusalem in 1099. Many more crusades would follow but they were not as successful as the first crusade. For instance, many writers, such as Fulcher of Chatres, wrote about the crusades, which he was a part of.
