Verdict delivered by London Inner South Coroner’s Court comes as part of ongoing campaign for much stricter enforcement of standards to address indoor and outdoor airborne pollutants
‘Air pollution’ should legally be considered a cause in the death of nine year-old Ella Kissi-Debrah in 2013, a landmark inquest has concluded today.
London Inner South Coroner’s Court said that pollutants, such as those emanating from London’s South Circular Road near where Ella lived "made a material contribution" to the schoolgirl’s death, according to the BBC.
A decision to recognise the fatal impact of pollutants in the air is expected to set a historic precedent in what is believed to be the first ruling of its kind to recognise air pollution as a direct cause of death.
