Pittsburghers helping Pittsburghers secure COVID-19 vaccination appointments: Three Hampton-area women started a Facebook group to do just that.Watch the report in the video player above."I just wish I had a magic button to help every single person that asks for help on our page," Leighann Bacher said.Bacher, along with friends Heather Lucci and Liz Huber, created the group, which is called Getting Pittsburgh Vaccinated - COVID-19 Appointment Tip Page.After Bacher secured appointments for family members, she felt she could help others who were struggling."It's really frustrating," she said. "It breaks my heart every time someone comments and they're like, 'I've been trying for weeks, I have this many risk factors, I'm so worried,' or they're worried for their mom, their dad, their grandparents."Desperate to get vaccine appointments for her father and high-risk mother-in-law, Donna Azar said she spent hours calling their primary care physicians, local hospitals and Veterans Affairs, and combing through websites with no luck."The closest places were like an hour away, and we still couldn't get an appointment," Azar said.A friend told Azar about the Facebook group. She made a request, and two people helped her secure vaccine appointments."I felt like I won the vaccine lottery, honestly," Azar said."I just feel very lucky. I feel very blessed. Pittsburghers are awesome, and when you can help people in your own community, that's where it starts."In just three days, the group has grown to 1,500 members. Many are now jumping in to share tips and their time to help others secure appointments."Everyday people truly helping everyday people, and that's where it's at," Azar said.
