The First World War may be the stupidest ever waged. This tiff between inbred royal cousins engaged both of my grandfathers, one in Egypt, one at Gallipoli. And although they returned, millions of others lost their lives and millions more their happiness, not to mention the spin-off Second World War, and the rest of that maddened century. This presents a conundrum â how to revere the sacrifice without glorifying the war that demanded it â which sits at the heart of Fiona Hallâs beautiful artwork in the extended Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park. It returns to normal opening hours tomorrow, Anzac Day. To experience this work, in all its confident delicacy, is to wish for similar subtlety in treating the rest of Australian history.
