The villas of northern Italy may be an ocean away, but a compound for sale on Connecticut's shoreline brings their style closer to home.
Listed for $2.99 million, the compound on 146 Hamburg Road in Lyme was inspired by the style of northern Italy's "16th century villas designed by Palladio," the listing notes. But it didn't start out that way.
According to the listing, the home's original façade began as a 1710s farmhouse, but was redesigned and rebuilt over nine years. Inside the main house's 6,308 square feet of living space, there are two bedrooms, three full bathrooms and six fireplaces, the listing notes, as well as a painting gallery and sun room. The living room is two stories tall and was "inspired by a dining hall at Yale University," according to the listing.
