Thing were completely live people, i can prove that were live. Think of a number. Im thinking to have the same one. laughter all right, the South Carolina democratic president ial debate has just wrapped up and, guys, it was a little crazy. Tom, i think she was talking about my plan, not yours. I think we were talking about math and it doesnt take two hours to do the math. Lets talk about math. You wrote the crime bill. Where we come from thats called johnny come lately. You didnt write that bill. I wrote the bill. Okay, you did. Took out to have the hands of look at a fact check. Ets look at the fact check. talking at the same time senator sanders, a quick response. Im not out of time he spoke overtime and im going to talk trevor damn it was wild tonight. I havent seen white people go at each other that hard since khakis were on sale at banana republic. Its not surprising the debate got that hot because the stakes could not be higher, people. This debate is the last one before the South Carolina primary this weekend and, remember, a few days after that is super tuesday. Thats when 15 states all hold their primaries at the same time. And they do it at the same time because they got a deal on groupon. laughter so every candidate tonight needed to do well. But there was one candidate who needed it more than anyone else. Former new york mayor and the only candidate not allowed to ride a rollercoaster Michael Bloomberg. The debate was a disaster for bloomberg. Michael bloomberg, who had a pretty horrible first debate, i think thats a fair statement, right . Bloomberg was awful. Michael bloomberg fell flat on his debate. If youre Michael Bloomberg, you were so bad at that first debate, it doesnt matter how much money youre spending. He got hammered in front of 20 million viewers. Trevor yes, Michael Bloomberg was so bad at the first debate he got slammed by everyone. Cnn, nbc, fox, even the bachelor. Last night, pete told mad where told maddy i know i messed up but not as much as Michael Bloomberg at the the last debate. So bloomberg was praying for an easier debate but doesnt seem like it worked. Right from the start he was on the back foot. Senator sashedz, we havent had a National Unemployment rate this low for this long in 50 years. Here in South Carolina, the Unemployment Rate is even lower. How will you convince voters that a democratic socialist can do better than President Trump with the economy . Well, youre right, the economy is doing really great for people like mr. Bloomberg and other billionaires. audience reacts trevor oh i feel bad for bloomberg. The question wasnt even about him. laughter hes just minding his business over there, and out of nowhere, like he must be the first billionaire in history to get hit in a drive by. Thats never happened. laughter and bernie didnt give him a chance. Right, he doesnt mess around. If bernie was a boxer, he would hit you in the locker room before the fight. Come in, it was going to happen either way, ill see you out there boom come on laughter now, if Bernie Sanders was the asswhooping appetizer, Elizabeth Warren brought the main course. You know whats going to be interesting later this week is donald trump. Hes going to be here to raise money for his buddies senator lindsey graham. Who funded Lindsey Grahams campaign for reelection last time . It was mayor bloomberg. He dumped 12 million into the Pennsylvania Senate race to help reelect an antichoice right wing republican senator in 2012, he scooped in to try to defend another republican senator against a woman challenger, that was me. It didnt work, but he tried hard. cheers and applause trevor oh oh, goddam it, i cant watch, but i gotta watch laughter man, when it comes to bloomberg, Elizabeth Warren is relentless, she destroyed him in the first debate, she came after him tonight. I bet when he got in his car she popped up in the back seat like, oh, and another thing laughter so bernie kicked off the debate by attacking bloomberg and his fellow big nares. Then senator warren slammed bloomberg for bankrolling republicans. And if bloomberg was worried he was coming across as a corrupt billionaire, it really didnt help him when he made a really bad slip of the tongue. Lets just go on the record. They talk about 40 democrats, 21 of those with people that i spent 100 million to help elect. All of the new democrats that came in, put nancy pelosi in charge and gave the congress the ability to control this president , i got them. audience reacts trevor thats embarrassing. Its not a good look. There are a ton of Democratic Candidates i bought, i own, i mean, i bribed thats poor peoples words that i supported, that i supported. applause so bloomberg didnt do limbself any favors with that answer and, for two reasons, one, money and politics is one of the things that most people are angry about in this country and, secondly, you probably shouldnt brag about buying people in South Carolina. So it looks like bloomberg is going to keep reminding us every sing del bait how much money hes able to spend, and i guess Pete Buttigiegs strategy is to keep reminding us that he would like some money to spend. Grassroots contributions are the lifeblood of my campaign. In fact, i shouldnt miss the opportunity. If youre watching now and you support my campaign, go to pete for america. Com and chip in, and if youre watching right now and youre a billionaire, i will raise your taxes. But, if youd like to defeat donald trump, please go to pete for america. Com and donate the legal maximum of 2,800. Trevor you see, folks, thats what happens when you let a teenager join the debate. They stop talking about policy and they ask you to raise their allowance. And then after that, he asked gayle king to drop him at home after the debate. Please, my dad canceled my uber account now as weird as that moment may have been, one to have the strangles moments to have the night easily belonged to Amy Klobuchar. You see, in the discussion in and around gun control, everyone was trying to position themselves as the person who could get gun control passed. She was trying to position herself as the one democrat who was for limiting guns but understands gun culture thanks to a really special family member. Weve got a win in the middle of the country. Having someone that can lead the ticket that can bring people with her is the way you get gun safety legislation. I look at these senator klobuchar. I say do they hurt my uncle dick in the deer stand . They do not. laughter trevor uncle dick in the deer stand . And where is aunt vagina . In the beaver hut . laughter applause i feel like even uncle dick was sitting at home saying, i think at a debate you can call me richard. Its a very serious moment. laughter i want to say, senator klobuchar, that is a Great Campaign slogan, leave that dick alone thats 10 of the vote right there. laughter you have to remember, this debate was in South Carolina, right. The first state where black voters hold sway. So all the candidates made sure to show everyone that they were down with the brown. Every single policy area in the United States has a gigantic subtext of race. We have a criminal Justice System today that is not only broken, it is racist. We can no longer pretend that everything is race new central. Theres seven white people on this stage talking about racial justice. I know if i were black my success would have been a lot harder to achieve. Trevor yes, thats right, thats right. If i was black, i wouldnt have gotten this far because my police would have slammed me against the wall and frisked me and then i would have said, wait its me and they would have said, shut up, blacky and then theyd search my pockets and go, whose 60 billion is this . I would be, like, its mine from when i was white weve ladder that before laughter im not going to lie, man. The democrats did have some interesting ideas around race. It was really interesting to hear them talk about. I wish theyd talk about it more. Tom steyer talked about funding black Business Owners who had been disenfranchised. Amy klobuchar talked about fair housing, Pete Buttigieg talked about the struggles black people have. Once the powerpoint was done, the main event, going after Bernie Sanders. Can Americans Trust that a d. J. Socialist president will not give authoritarians a free pass . I have opposed authoritarianism all over the world. What i said is what barack obama said in terms of cuba, that cuba made progress on education. Barack obama was abroad in a town meeting. He did not in any way suggest there was anything positive about the cuben government. Authoritarianism of any stripe is bad, but that is different than saying that governments occasionally do things that are good. And when dictatorships whether the chinese or the cubens do something good, you acknowledge that. Trevor okay, now, to be fair, i think people have been a little too hard on bernie on this, right. The fidel castro thing, especially because all hes saying is something barack obama alluded to, that fidel castro, as bad as he was did some good things, like education. Thats it. Think of it like the count from sesame street, just because you exphend him for teaching kids math doesnt mean you condone he sucks the life out of people. One, two, three, theyre drifters ha, ha, ha but at the same time, bernie, you have to admit, when people ask you about castro, thats not the best time to mention his record on education. Its bad timing, right . If your wife is yelling at you saying i cant believe you cheated on me with all those ugly women, thats not the time to say some of them were really beautiful thats not the time laughter and i i was that wasnt the only attack bernie had to face because, you see, now that hes the frontrunner, he has everyone else gunning for him. Vladimir putin thinks that donald trump should be president of the United States and thats why russia is helping you get elected so you will lose to him. I am not looking forward to a scenario where it comes down to donald trump with his nostalgia for the social order of the 1950s and Bernie Sanders with a nostalgia for the revolutionary politics of the 1960s. Bernie, in fact, hasnt passed much of anything. I do not think that this is the best person to lead the ticket. I think i would make a better president than bernie. Im hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight. laughter trevor bernies a legend man, because your name wasnt being mentioned, people were screamingt it at you. For him, shouting is so normal that when people shout at him, hes like, what a pleasant conversation for a change im so sick of everyone whispering peoples normal voices are like asmr to him. laughter its not surprising that this happened. Eth not surprising all the moderates went off Bernie Sanders tonight because whats clear in this campaign is that as long as so many moderates stay in the race, none of them are going to overtake Bernie Sanders, so theyre going after them, but theyre splitting the vote amongst themselves. The only way one of them is going to be able to beat bernie is if all the other ones drop out. The problem is none of them can seem to agree on who that person should be. Some of these candidates are going to have to start dropping ow. People like Amy Klobuchar, people like tom steyer. The Buttigieg Campaign is calling on Michael Bloomberg to drop off a race after Bloomberg Campaign memo suggest biden, buttigieg and klobuchar dropped out. I think it would be beneficial if everybody else would develop out and support my campaign. How do you convince klobuchar and buttigieg to get out. Its time for klobuchar to get out of the rates. I have the third biggest number. Why would i get out . Trevor someone needs to leave but no one wants to do it. The high stakes version of the first to hang up. You drop out first. No, you drop out first. No, you drop out first. Look, i spent half a billionon in campaign, you drop out first laughter as long as all the moderates decide to stay in the brace, bernie will have a pretty clear path to win the nomination and seems like bernie realizes it based on his new campaign ads. Im benders. I know the pundits are saying there are too many moderates in the raissments you all are doing a great job. Amy klobuchar, why you drop out . You came in third. Thats momentum. Mayor pete, if anyone seas you should drop out, you tell them to go to hell in one of the seven languages you sort of speak. speaking a Foreign Language terribly mayor bloomberg, spend your money on all the ads. If two things america loves, its you and watching commercials. Tom stirks quit and stop calling me. Its getting creepy im Bernie Sanders and i endorse everyone staying in this race is that all right, everybody well be right back cheers and applause cheers and applause trevor welcome back to the daily show one of the most interesting stories of the 2020 election has been the rise of Pete Buttigieg. No matter what you think of his candidacy, you have to agree its Pretty Amazing a gay man can be a serious contender for president of the United States. But what do lgbtq voters think about this moment in american politics . We sent jaboukie to sent down with some of them to find out. Im here in new york city, gay capital of the world, except for berlin, San Francisco or kong. Here to talk to some lgbtq voters anyway, ive come to the leslie loehmann to talk with lgbtq voters about finally getting the gay president ial candidate weve always dreamed of. So if someone told you ten years ago that there was going to be a gay president ial candidate, how do you feel like you would have reacted . Because i know for me, i would have been, like, who told you im gay . Was it kevin . I would have believed it, but i would think it would be a woman, though. Ten years ago, barack obama was still evolving about marriage. Its a real leap to think that ten years later we would have a viable queer candidate for president of the United States. But being proud of peete doesnt mean that were voting for him. Raise your hand if you plan on voting for mayor pete in the primary. laughter i dont think its possible for me. Theres nothing he could do to make you vote for him . No. Our community actually has a bit of a shameful history in the sense that gay white men have historically marginalized the contributions of trans women and trans men and people of color. I am trans and this gay president ial candidate doesnt do anything to make my life safer as a trans woman. Thats the divide. According to my unusual poll, the type of gay you are determines whether you trust pete to represent you. A lot of people will say hes not queer enough or gay enough. What does that mean . Hes gay enough if we can hold his feet to the fire to make sure that our voices are heard. I live in south bend and i work with black lives matter in south bend and they dont have trust for pete. So you want him to wear a leather harness and him and jason to open their relationship and you want them to be poly . We want him to Pay Attention to the policing problem. I had a face to face with him and asked him what are you doing about the Police Brutality in indiana. He kept saying, this is what i want you to do, i want you to push me. I dont need to push you, you know what needs to be done. Youre not asking him to be more gay, you want him to care about the margins. Yes, care about the margins and leave the dockers at home. Petes rainbow booty shorts is a pair of relaxed fit dock, which is why i wonder his main stream appeal is you can kind of forget hes gay. As much as we can say petes brand of queerness has problems, dont you think that makes him electable. What about this . That is my brand of queerness. We dont have a picket fence but thats a picture of my husband and me. The word is first family, not first gay family. America can get behind that. A see a sanitized version of what it means to be gay. To a lot of critics, this looks like this. Oh. Theyre less gay couple and more so just like two guys who decided to make granola in their kitchen. Theyre clearly gay and if thats not gay enough for the people in this country, i dont know what would be. So it sounds like the takeaway of this conversation should be, if buttigieg does not eat his husbands bleep on live tv, he is not gay enough for me. Im out. laughter how about this, gay people, were basically straight. Nno. The takeaway is for a lot of voters you cant just choose gay. You also have to think about your race. Pete buttigieg, black people dont like him because of the police stuff and homophobia or something . Black people like him and a lot of black people dont. Pete buttigieg, a lot of black people dont like him but some do. Can you imagine how fun it will be to watch a gay married midwestern mayor destroy donald trump . Okay, i hear you. Pete buttigieg, im taking trump to pound town. No one wants to do that. What is is it . The takeaway should be the Lgbtq Community is not a monolith and the first gay president ial candidate means very Different Things to very different people in our community. Whether you believe pete is the visibility we spent decades fighting for or just another centrist white guy whos easy on the eyes and the police, the Gay Community is making it clear, if you want our vote, you better work it. Im not bleep saying that. I cant bleep say that. What the bleep does that even mean . cheers and applause trevor jaboukie youngwhite, everybody. My guest tonight is a former member of congress, white house chief of staff and twoterm mayor of chicago whose new book is called the the nation why mayors are now running the world. Rahm emanuel cheers and applause before we get into the book, we watched the democratic debate which has got an lot more exciting than the past few debates. You have been involved in Democratic Politics specifically for a very long time. How do you think the democratic race is going . Well, i think heres how i look at it, whats interesting, just one observation, is viewership of the debates is up but participation in the primaries is not. Its not beating 2008 when we had record turnout. So that concerns me. In 2018, 2019, we had record energy, and right now, the debates are not producing the type of energy you want to see. So i have a small trashing yellow light saying a little concern on that. It can always flip but right now im a little concerned about that. Trevor right. He other thing is i have new respect for my family thanksgiving dinner, it looks a lot calmer compared to this. Trevor seems like it has become a lot more testy. Bloomberg stepping into the race might have been a catalyst but as the field narrows the stakes are higher. Trevor yeah. You were in the dccc, you have been part of democrats winning major leks, helping bill Clinton William president , working with barack obama as his chief of staff. Heres a question you may be mostly uniquely positioned to answer we have two mayors on that stage. Three. Trevor three, previous mayor with Bernie Sanders. Yeah. Trevor but two mayors who just stepped out of being mayor saying they want to run the country as president. Yes. Trevor does a mayor have the prerequisite experience to run a country . Youve worked with the president and been a mayor, how much of it gives you the experience you need . Well, first of all, the number one job before being for president was governor. All four governors have been thrown off the island, basically, and youre now left with mayor. The england, the mayor of london has become the prime minister. Trevor right. He experiences of dealing with, when you think about where you live, where you work, how you debt to work, the things around your neighborhood from libraries to parks, those are all services local government keel deal with. Chiang, cities are leading. Chicago, we made Community College free for the students of chicago who got a b average. Prek universals for all our fouryearolds. So the things that are major in terms of inclusive economic growth, climate change, mayors take the lead. The second piece, you actually fail in the job and you learn from experience. Legislating is not really about failure. I used to say to president clinton, if we knew in the first year, the first term, what we knew by the first year of the second term, we would be geniuses. Trevor right. And if you go back in history, think about president kennedy, he had the bay of pigs, a mess, realize the joint chiefs didnt know what they were talking about, took a study of it and when it came to the cuban missile crisis, he knew how to handle it. Mayors stumble all the time. And then the other piece of tha, learn from it and apply it to the future. Trevor let me ask you this before you go. Yeah. Trevor if thats the case, if mayors are running the world, why is everyone running to be president . The challenges you take on, not every mayor is running to be president , but i think the real thing is what is happening isio you have a Global Economy but all politics is local and 75 of the American People have confidence in their local government and that number is in the mid 20s for the national government. I do also think one other thing. Were really ripping apart. In the city of chicago its true, true in new york, l. A. , and a lot of cities of all sizes. We have 145 black badges spoken in our city. Many different faces, cultures, backgrounds, but the aspiration of a parent regardless of where they came from is the same for their child and mayors form a community and a sense of belonging. In a period of age nation and distance that accepts of belonging gives you an asset Going Forward where your diversity can be a strength rather than a liability. Trevor i understand what youre saying about being a mayor whos bringing people together. In the book you talk about the journey you have been on as mayor, challenges you face on a daytoday level working for constituents directly. Is this something that makes a mayor unique in how you deal with people versus larger issues . Yeah, theres a part of the book where i talk about you celebrate together, you have pain together, you have moments of joy and then you work through a lot of issues. You are in touch with the people and in many ways i mean, people give you, especially in chicago, theres thumbs up and another digit they can also tell you and that happens all the time. That was a cleanedup version for me. Im proud of myself. Thats very unusual for me. The fact is thats what happens. But, also, you can be there whes when i created the chicago star scholarship, you got a b average, we make Community College, transportation, books free, i saw the relief on parents face that they didnt have to pick which child got a chance to go to college, they didnt have to take a second mortgage out of the home to give their child a chance at the american dream, and the relief of the sense that they could be a good parent to see what they could never get for themselves but their children, that could only happen at a local level. I would have loved to have had a federal partner but i had to make sure every child had a chance at the future. Trevor you do talk about that and give credit for what youve done in the education space in in chicago. Youve taken fire for closing down predominantly black or latino schools. People said mayor why did you close down the schools in areas where people need it the most. You know how important it is to have black and brown kids in schools learning and growing, you closed the schools down because you said they were underperforming. A lot of the teachers went on strike and said you werent catering to their needs. What do you think you could have done differently . So the first part is, when i ran in 2011, chicago had the sortest school day and the shortest school year in the United States of america. I made a pledge to get that done, that our children are not going to be cheated three years of education compared to a child in houston. I could have said, hey, when i got elected, this is really hard, and then people be angry i gave up on a pledge. I made that pledge and i wanted to see it through. It led to a sevenday strike, but at the end of the day, the Graduation Rate went from 56 to nearly 80 . The reading and math scores for all kids of all backgrounds rose and in many ways set national standards. So being a mayor, if all you want is to be loved, dont run for that job. If you want to make a decision where the decisions you make and you put your thumb on the scale and the difference between a 56 Graduation Rate and an 80 Graduation Rate is kids can believe in themselves and have a chance at a future and thats what public life is about. Trevor do you ever wonder why people in chicago, not all of them, you know more of them, obviously, but in chicago people would say ram rahm was an amazing mayor for the 1 . You have even spoken about that yourself. Where do you think that came from . We did a lot of things. We didnt give a subsidy to the sports teams. We expanded the minimum wage, created prek. Eliminated the taxics companies were getting. I know the difference in Chicago Public schools when you graduate and go to community, theres nobody in the 1 . I get the politics of it but when youve made a major dent in the good deserts where there were no Grocery Store on the south and west side, that was not just a job and a Grocery Store, that was the respect of the community. That comes with politics and i get that. Trevor let me ask you about a trend and dilemma america faces. On the stage we had three former mayors with Bernie Sanders but two who say mayor was their last Public Office jobs and those two are taking the most flack for their relationships with the black communities they served and the police and how they treated them. You yourself is a mayor who came under fire for the way your city treated black people. Laquan is one who said you could have done a better job. Is it the case in america where mayors seem to be protecting the police more than constituents . The other thing i would say is you saw Amy Klobuchar had a background as a prosecutor. Shes also come under fire. So if youre involved in that in one aspect, youre going to get hit on that. Every mayor as well as the prosecutors are making efforts to get both good Public Safety which is the number one priority as your responsibility as well as do it in a way that is good policing. You work at it every day. Theres not just a point you hit at it. And the fact, whether its Michael Bloomberg or mayor peete, Amy Klobuchar, others getting criticized, joe biden for his support of violence against women but also the 94 crime act, people are coming under attack for that and looking at it different, and the question is how do you apply those efforts Going Forward to find the basis of Community Policing. Trevor if youre looking back, i would be interested to know. In life you look back and go, man, i wish i could have changed that. You do talk about that in a book. You talk about how you wish you could have changed some of the way you treated the policing issues or dealt with them. I have always been fascinated by this, when i talk to mayors or read books of mayors once theyve left office, is it the case as mayors theres a part of you that are afraid to go up against the police yiewnous because to have the power they hold in reelecting you, or is it a symbiotic relationship where the mayor says im with the police no matter what . I dont want to speak for all mayors but i say making a change in both the laws and culture while executing on Public Safety, doing both of those simultaneously not one at the ex expense of each other takes a tremendous amount of leadership. So prior to everything happening in chicago in 2016, first city to make a voluntary agreement with the aclu to check policing to see if its done right, we did the safer commission, and did the first, only ever city to do reparations for prior acts of police department, 20 years prior to my tenure. No citys ever done that. I thought we addressed it. The problem and depth of mistrust was deeper than i expected and understood. And while we were crime every day, visiting a parent whos in the hospital alone, seeing the depth of what happened, being isolated, because you as a parent could not protect your child, what happened on the streets, that happens. And then at the same time youre trying to make changes to the police department, youre trying to do both of those. So what you understand is that the problem is a lot deeper than people understood and appreciated and the fact is you have to make changes because policing needed some of the insurance, oversight and regulations that have not kept up with Community Policing and make it true Community Policing. Trevor one final question before we let you go. I talk to you forever about the book and your job but you did it, from the few things youve said not just in the interview, but in the book you said its not easy, its a thankless job, everyone will hate you, you will do your best and work your hardest. Its not like a comedy show. Trevor knowing what you know now would you do it again . Absolutely. Let me say this, ive had the greatest public life working for Senior Advisor president clinton, congress, chief of staff for president obama, mayor. Mayor over here, all three, mayor is better. The highs and lows are unbelievable but as mayor of the city of chicago i know children at age 4 not 6 get an education. We added four years to a childs education. You cant do more. You no ethe trajectory of their lives because you were willing to do that and you were willing to spend your capital and popularity to make a difference in the childs life. In a former life i was going to be a child educator. Having flown that and knowing that you can take on a battle and change a persons life and the trajectory. You know, theres a saying of a rabbi, who are you if only for yourself, if not now, when. My late father said your responsibility as a jew and an adult is to know you can make a difference in somebody elses life. That is the most rewarding thing you can do in public life is
