Snitch on trump, and everything in iran is going according to plan. So lets catch up on todays headlines. Lets kick it off with Laurie Laughlin, some know her us a aunt becky, others know her as the star of every other hallmark movie, but now shes to be known astinmate you dont want to mess with. Actress Laurie Laughlin is preparing for a reported lockup with a prison coach. Shes learning martial arts and prison lingo. Shes facing up to 45 years in prison after pleading not guilty in a College Admissions scandal. Trevor shes learning martial arts and prison lingo . First of all, what is prison lingo . Is she going to be in the prison yard her first day and be, like, all right, im going into my cell. People are, like, oh, i can tell you have been here before laughter also learning martial arts right before you go to jail is not going to help you much. You realize in the beginning everything they teach you is basic. Shell get into a fight and be, you want to shank me . Come at me but from this side. No kicks. I havent learned kicks yet and whos got the wooden board i want to break that board laughter by the way, what kind of prison does aunt becky think shes going to be sent to . Shes going to be with other rich white women. Martial arts is not the training she needs to survive there. Shell be, like, i have been taking karate and they will be, like, oh, thats why you didnt have time to dye your roots, darling . I didnt plan for this laughter if she comes out of prison with hard tattoos but still goes back to making hallmark movies, that would be funny. The true meaning of christmas is in your hearts lets put pudding cups and cigarettes out for santa while aunt becky is getting ready to go to prison, uncle john may be getting ready to send someone there. This is cnn break news. Breaking news that could impact negotiations over President Trumps impeachment file. Trumps former National Security advisor john bolton says hes ready to testify if Congress Subpoenas him. The president s aides are downplaying wontens announcement saying hes dropping up sales for his upcoming book. Trevor i bet hes mad at trump for starting a war with iran without him. Bombing iran was boltons dream. Right now its like seeing his ex going on the vacation they planned without him. Now youre going to iran . Its now not crazy expensive . Really . The only reason bolton is wanted to testify is because he wants publicity for his upcoming book. Wouldnt that be hilarious if he made that for demands to testify. Mitch mcconnell would say my next witness is here to testify about quid pro quo with ukraine and then a performance by lizzo. Mrrrr laughter finally, you know how people are saying politicians need to get more hands on. The governor of new york andrew cuomo maybe took it a step too far. New yorks governor became a First Responder after a crash on the highway. Andrew cuomo rescued a man from a partially overturned truck monday afternoon on a highway in new york city and staffers shot the video youre watching there of the governor helping the driver out of the wreck. The man is okay and this is the third time cuomo has come to a drivers rescue in the past four years. Trevor okay laughter its cool that Governor Cuomo helped that driver but, lets be honest, rescue is a strong word. Hes just half grabbing the thigh. laughter cuomos the guy who helps you move the sofa going, i got the bill pillows laughter this is the third time cuomo has rescued a driver which, im not going to lie, is a little suspicious. laughter all im saying is if you see cuomo while youre driving, buckle up, some shits about to go down. applause thats it for the headlines. Lets move on to our top story cheers and applause all over the news, the big story is still about the u. S. Killing of qasem soleimani, irans top general and hottie who used to have a body because hate him or love hill, out of to admit the man was good looking. Hes like a terrorist george clooney. Should be named people magazines sexiest man whos no longer alive. Take that Abraham Lincoln now that irans Top Commander is dead, where does that lev everybody else. Well catch up in the ongoing segment middle east part two this time its persiale. Aside from the million or so people at his funeral yesterday, everyone else agrees soleimani was a bad guy, responsible for death and destruction around the world. He oversaw attacks on u. S. Soldiers in iraq, propped up assad in syria and was the executive producer of cats, all horrible things. laughter but as bad as soleimani was, not everyone agrees that killing him like this was a good idea. The same way things only got worse when america got rid of saddam hussein, or when america got rid of muammar gadhafi, or gluten because i dont know what it actually, is all i know is once it was gone, everything tasted like shit. So there are a lot of people, there are a lot of people questioning trumps decision and even some republicans are lashing out. Republican senator rand paul said the killing of soleimani is the death of diplomacy with iran. You would have to be brain dead to believe that we tear up the agreement, we put an embargo on you and we kill your Major General and theyre just going to crawl back to the table and say what do you want, america . Trevor excuse me, senator . How dare you suggest americas president is brain dead laughter that is so insulting mr. President , why dont you go ahead and educate this fool President Trump defended himself on monday saying the United States is a lot safer now. Well see what happens. Well see what the response is, if any. But youve seen what i said our response will be. laughter trevor okay, rand paul, i, like your barber, owe you an apology. laughter now, look, the truth is its not that surprising that trumps response is so muddled and confusing because hes trump. What is interesting is how the entire administration seems to be just as confused about every aspect of this situation. For instance, starting with the rationale for why they killed soleimani in the first place. The Trump Administration is scrambling to explain the two words that led to all of this imminent threat. Was the justification this imminent threat . Chuck, its never one thing. You have been at this a long time. The American People are smart, too. Its never one moment or instance, its a collective, its a full Situational Awareness of risk. If youre looking for eminence, you need look no further than the days that led up to the strike that was taken against soleimani. When you say the attacks were imminent, how imminent, days, weeks . If youre an american in the region, days and weeks, this is not something thats relevant. Trevor okay, like, hold up, man. You cant say the threat is imminent, then when people ask how imminent, youre, like, well, time is irrelevant, because thats specifically what imminent means. Hes acting like were crazy for asking a question, an attack was imminent, okay . Really, pompeo, how imminent . Youre obsessed with numbers get off my back, rainman so america is on the cusp of war and, already, the most basic question, why are we doing it, has been unclear at best. But the fallout has been handled just as columnsy. Because remember, iraqs government was so mad about the drone strike happening on their soil that they asked america to leave the country for good. Well, yesterday, the u. S. Government made two stunning announcements in the span of a couple of hours. First, they were withdrawing its troops from iraq and, second, forget that thing that we first just said. Adding to the confusion monday, the pentagon circulated a letter announcing a withdrawal of u. S. Forces from iraq. But the pentagon later said there is no decision to leave iraq, and it was just a draft. It was a mistake, an honest mistake. Trevor yeah, thats right, the pentagon released an announcement saying they were pulling out the the troops and then they were like, backsies i didnt take my hand off the piece, thats not a move. How do you send out a draft military announcement by mistake . They handle Nuclear Weapons and cnd handle microsoft outlook. Its time to bomb iran oh, shoot i sent the referral to grub hub. Sorry, guys laughter not cheer why the administration chose to kill soleimani now and its not clear if the troops are leaving iraq or not. One things for sure, they also dont seem to know what theyd bomb next. The Trump Administration struggles to put out a cohesive message about how the United States plans to respond to irans latest threat. The president is threatening to strike 5 52 sites in iran including cultural ones which would violate international law. Senior Administration Officials either publicly contradicted mr. Trump or said he did not say what he said. The American People know every target will be a lawful target and will be at the Single Mission of protecting america. President trump is vowing to strike back though backing down from targeting irans cultural sites. We are, according to a various laws, supposed to be very careful with their cultural heritage, and you know what . If thats what the law is, i like to obey the law. laughter trevor what . I like to obey the law . No, you have to obey the law. Trump makes the law sound like its an optional topping at chipotle. Bitch, its the geneva condition, not pico diguyo. I like to obey the law . How come the administration is never on the same page. Trump says hell bomb cultural sites, they say he wont, he says he will, they say he wont. He never seems to get the group chat because hes on android. Thats what it seems like. So you know the truth is, as much as we insult the Trump Administration, at least theyre learning from americas previous mistakes because in 2003, the Bush Administration had a plan to go into iraq but no exit strategy. So now the Trump Administration is like, ah, i see where we went wrong. This time, no entrance strategy. Lesson learned. Well be right back. cheers and applause tremfya® helps adults with moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis uncover clearer skin that can last. The world is undoubtedly on edge right now waiting to see how iran will respond to america killing its top general, but according to some iranian leaders, we might be waiting for a while. This morning, in irans capital, the foreign minister saying in a speech the u. S. Will receive the difintive resolute response to its brazen criminal act in a place and at a time it hurts most. Iran is a very patient country. We will take our action after necessary deliberation, but im sure that it will be taken at the time of our choosing, not at the time of the United States choosing. Trevor goddam, iran is a very patient country that gave me chills. It really did. It was like from a tv show. I would be watching 24 and the guy would say that and i would be, like, lazy writing but effective. I wouldnt mind that guy scheduling all my appointments. Trevor will meet you at the time of his choosing, not at the time of your choosing. You have been warned, comcast. laughter the big question is what do these threats actually mean for americans . To help us figure it out, were joined by our own senior National Security correspondent roy wood, jr. , everybody cheers and applause what the hell are you wearing, man . Wearing protective gear, trevor did you not hear that man . Were all gonna die im serious trevor roy, please i brought you on for analysis, not fear. Well, my analysis is that theres a 73 chance im going to shit myself its scary, trevor. I mean, usually, when you get a threat from the middle east, its some dude screaming in a cave, but this guy was calm, like an iranian john wick its like we killed his puppy and now hes coming for us. Trevor roy, to be fair, we always knew iran was going to threaten america, but what do we think theyd actually do . Its obvious, trevor we threaten their cultural sites, so now theyre going to attack our cultural sites trevor wow, you mean like the Washington Monument or mt. Rushmore . No, thats just rocks and shit. Im talking about our actual culture, the netflix service, the popeyes chicken sandwich, os greatest storyteller stan lee. Trevor but, roy, stan lee is already dead. Those bastards its already begun beta to victor the eagle has fallen trevor relax, you heard the foreign minister. He said iran is a patient country so its probably not going to happen anytime soon. Thats worse were just waiting for something to happen. If we dont even know what it is, if theres a car crash, is that iran or just cuomo setting up his next photo op or what if our wifi goes down . Is that iran . Or did my neighbor just add a password, well never know. I dont know, man. Because you see, trevor, patient revenge is the worst kind of revenge. You remember when your momma said she was going to whoop your ass but she didnt say when . So now youre just waiting for an ass whipping all day and the longer you wait the worse it gets. Hell, i have been waiting on one ass whipping for 25 years. Every time, every time i go home, im flinching i told you, im sorry about the cookies, momma i was seven years old, joyce trevor roy, roy, i understand what you mean, but, unfortunately, this is what its like when we are close to war. Well, thats the thing, trevor if iran is mad that trump bombed their general, they should handle their beef directly with trump. Trevor whoa, whoa, whoa, roy, roy, roy whoa whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa applause youre not suggesting iran attack the president of the United States you dont bring that shit to my show, roy chill out, green card. laughter this is what im saying, im just saying that if iran wants to get revenge, they should just mess with things that trump actually loves, his hotels. Put bed bugs under the mattresses, plug the holes in his golf course, swim in the pools even though you had diarrhea in the last 14 days, and if iran really wants to hurt trump, if they really want to hurt trump, tell him hes invited to a party full of supermodels and when he gets there, bam its erics Birthday Party trevor wow youre the real terrorist roy wood, jr. , everybody hes crazy applause gatorade zero. All the electrolytes. Zero sugar. Level 3 huh . Thats a start. All day, baby nba champion . Hey glad were not like that. Gatorade zero. Get more out of zero. Good luck. cheers and applause trevor welcome back. My guest tonight is a pulitzer prizewinning Investigative Reporter for the new yorker, a documentary producer for h. B. O. , and bestselling author whose latest book is called catch and kill. Please welcome ronan farrow. cheers and applause hey, trevor. Trevor welcome back to the show. Thanks for having me back. Trevor before we jump into the book, lets jump into news thats breaking and were learning about now. Its funny, last time you were on the show, you had written about diplomacy specifically in and around iran. We spoke about the topic and how donald trump didnt seem to have a plan and his plan could backfire. Seems like i was wrong, went great, right . Trevor totally the opposite. That book war on peace a little plug there, was about the collapse of diplomacy. We are stip mining, state department isnt what it was, diplomats are not in the room making the decision. We threw out the deal but it was a narrow window at preventing whats happening now. Trevor when you look at the strategy the administration is taking now, one that is undiplomatic, feels like everyone is hawkish in their approach, feels like everyone sees only one way to resolve this issue, do you see a way back from this . Because many people feel like iran has no vested interest in now talking to america and america, because its commanderinchief, doesnt seen to have a part forward to negotiating with iran again. Were not going to solve the confrontation with iran in this segment, sadly. If anyone can do it, its you, but what i can say is from a structural standpoint we have to empower our dim massments these are brave men and women who rank and file keep things running. If they were, we would have a fighting chance of not fighting. Trevor whats what diplomats are for. cheers and applause you have been at the center of one of the largest movements in america. Harvey weinstein, as fate would have it, started his trial today. Youve written this book, catch and kill, lies, spice and conspiracies to protect predators. Do you think the Harvey Weinstein trial is going to go in the direction the public hopes or is he powerful enough to somehow escape again . Look, i wind up saying this a lot, i am a reporter not an activist. I hope that Harvey Weinstein receives a fair trial. That means a prosecution being tough, the process being organized and respected and not manipulated in the way powerful people so often are able to manipulate those processes. A large part of the reporting in this book is about how Harvey Weinstein narrowly evade previous attempts to charge him because he was able to hire armies of private investigators to dig up dirt on his accusers and smear them and influence the d. A. s office, this very d. A. Who is advancing this case in manhattan right now is one of the people who dropped charges against him previously, after Harvey Weinsteins lawyers made donations to his campaigns. So they are trying now. Theres a lot of public pressure. I hope they do a good job, but this has been a Long Time Coming and the track record doesnt make one optimistic. Trevor its interesting because this book is really a story not just about what happened but how it was allowed to continuously happen. You write in the book about how Harvey Weinstein was caught on a wiretap, you know, how the police heard him confessing to groping a woman. You know, you read in the book about how Harvey Weinstein set up a campaign to protect himself and to threaten people who were coming after him including yourself, which is a scary place to be in. Did you learn if there was any way to hold people that powerful account snbl. The small sliver of accountability that we have now is because the women that you just mentioned were so brave. I mean, yes, i was in the crosshairs of frankly an insane International Espionage operation. There were people with false identities following me and two russian guys hanging outside of my apartment and they became source in some cases, eventually, because they objected to it. But the only reason we know any of this is because people came forward and they said enough and overwhelmingly, thats the women who had gone through these terrible experiences and decided to risk everything to speak. We actually have here tonight two of the sources in that very first weinstein story and, you know, i think its a bittersweet moment where this is dredging up a lot of complicated feelings but were seeing this happen because one of them. One is that woman you mentioned who wore the wire and got a confession from harvey a couple of years ago, Ambra Gutierrez and rosanna arquette. These are heroic people who helped us understand terrible crimes. cheers and applause and we wouldnt be having the conversation without them. Trevor you know, one of the scary parts of these stories, one of the scarriest things about reading, you know, about the story is not just the predators themselves, but its about the systems that helped enable them to keep on being predators. You know, you write in the book about how you went to your bosses at nbc and you said, guys, i have this story on harvey and that story was shut down and they said, oh, you dont have enough, its not a good enough story. Why did you keep on, even though many of your bosses told you in the news world, oh, there is no story here . You know, weve seen a lot of people go up against their bosses to expose the truth now, including after this body of reporting about nbc which revealed a lot of misconduct at that company, people on nbc like journalists Rachel Maddow saying there needs to be an independent investigation, still hasnt happened. This was a company with a lot of secrets of its own, a company with a lot of alliances with Harvey Weinstein, and i lay out reams of transcripts of calls they were secretly having with Harvey Weinstein. But the point is not about nbc. The point is this happens all the time, and i think the moral of the story is you have to keep going, and when sources are as brave as the sources in this story, there is no room for me to be cowardly. They set the bar really high and i knew i wouldnt be able to sleep at night if i failed them. Trevor when you look at these stories, they must have a Common Thread beyond just the person. What are the steps that we could take . What are the moments that people missed where somebody could have been held accountable and something stopped and looked into. Is there anything you notice in your reporting that thats where society is dropping the ball . The story is full of moments where it could have been stopped earlier, where people had taped confessions of crimes, and whether they were in Law Enforcement or the media, they decided it wasnt worth the fight. You know, it doesnt always look like someone twirling their mustache in a dark bad room saying im going to cover up the crime, usually its people saying is it really worth the confrontation . The tv executives and oppenheim at nbc news says is it worth it at this point and they decided it wasnt. I think the moral of the story is its worth the fight. cheers and applause trevor powerful, man. Its an insane story. If we werent believ living it,i wouldnt believe it. Catch and kill, available now and a new episode of the catch and kill podcast will be available next week. Ronan farrow, everybody, well be right back cheers and applause cheers and applause i wrote this a long time ago. I dont know how old i was. I hope someday i will be on a real football team.
