But as much as russia may have worked to influen how americans voted, america already has a system that invalidates many peoples votes before theyre even cast. Gerrymandering, the drawing and redrawing of local districts to help ensure that a particular party gets a majority of votes and house seats. If both parties, there are congressional districts that are set up by the states that keep the parties in power. The redistricting allows politicians to choose their people rather than vice versa. Trevor thats right w gerrymandering the politicians choose their voters. The voters dont choose them. Thats weird. Its back to front, like getting to your uber and your triefer is in the backseat and is he like start driving as ashole, im late. Like this chart from the Washington Post shows how gers mannedderring works. Constitutionally the power to draw district lines belongs to the state governments, right, usually their legislatures do the work and thats normal. That is when they draw those districts in a fair and representative way in a state where lets say democrats won 60 of the votes, they would get 60 of the seats in that state. That sounds right. But the law defines what is fair is pretty unclear. So if a legislature wanted to rig the system for democrats, it could draw the line so that with only 60 of the votes, democrats could get 100 percent of the seats. Or if they wanted to rig it for republicans they could do the complete option, right. You draw some much more complicated lines and actually give the re7 cans majority even though they only want 40 of the voted, or if you draw them in a different way, you can get a dick, yeah, which is also bad for democracy. And here is the thing, this isnt just soom fanszee pixel penis theory, this has been happening in america in real life. One of 9 most extreme examples of gerrymandering is the congressional map drawn by North Carolina republicans after 2010. It say map that delivered the gop an overwhelming ten3 advantage in house seats by 2020, during a rough week 50 statewide supported into a 77 advantage. Trevor good lord. Observers say North Carolina 12th district straddling interstate 58 is so narrow could you open your car doors and kim everybody in it. Wow. That description got really dark. Now you dont need to be an expert to see that something is not quite right with these districts. Look at these shapes. Its like when two relatives have a kid together, something is clearly off. And recently, recently the American Court system has started to agree. Pennsylvanias Supreme Court has thrown out the states congressional map ruling that it quote clearly, plainly and palpably violates the state constitution. Im extremely excited to be captain two years in a row, im very happy to be able to represent the city of nashville again and i am just pumped man, im pumped to be an allstar again. You donated 10 million to a childrens hospital. Did you add a zero by mistake . Ive done that. Because ive done you can tell me. You know, i get that question a lot because its one thing to donate and give back. Its another reason to think, another way to look at it is why 10 million, you know. And i think it comes down to everybody has their own personal life experiences. I got to know a little boy named allen schapiro through my old minor hockey coach and still close friend and family friend martin ross. And he coached them and got to know alex very, very closely and his parents and his family. And was actually in touch with him until literally his last monts before he passed away. And you know, for me that made me want to give back in a different way. And really have a Significant Impact and not just give back, you know, where everyone could say wow, thats great but give back where i could actually make a difference. When i was presented the opportunity to do Something Like this with the 10 million donation and to the hospital in montreal i didnt even think twice about it. They came down the 401 to my house in nobleton, ontario and presented it to mement i signed the papers right there and it was the perfect situation to me. To this point we have helped over probably 10,000 families and raised millions of dollars so im very, very happy about that. Phenomenal story. Tell us about the program that you started in nashville, where you get policemen to hang out and spend time with young previously disadvantaged or disadvantaged youths. You know what, and it is so important. One of my best friends is a cop, and was actually just recently retire tired, crystal was a cop in boston. And you know, chris has come to a family of 12 brothers and sisters, used to play professional hockey but has become one of my closest friends over the years. We know how much there has been talk in sports especially with Police Officers and players have chosen to deal with it differently, i think that i was faced with a lot of questions coming out of training camp. And you know for me i always look at everything on how can i make this a positive situation. Right. And i looked at it, and i remember us having a meeting as a team before the season started talking about how we were going to handle it and i remember being up front, i said listen guys, i want to attack this in a way that is positive for the team and for the opportunity. And listen, also my best friend had an influence on me as well. And you know, i know what he has done for so many people and his friends have done. And i know that in the comeumentd of nashville i went going to have the opportunity maybe to donate 10 million to him again. But maybe do something that was just impactful in a different way and starting this program has been, its been amazing. It has had the same impact that my foundation has had in montreal, and a little bit of a different way and the kids. I mean i wish she could be there to see the look on the kids faces when it is the first time go to a hockey game, first time really doing anything that they can think of in a positive way. And so have Police Officers there to do it with them, its just been great. So you have these kids who meet up with a police officer. They come to a game, you get them tickets, buy them dinner, they hang out together. I would like to understand why you thought that that wab something you would want to do everything tackles it in a different way, but why that, why the kids with the Police Officers. Well, first of all, i think that i have, like i said, friends that work in law enforcement. And i think that we need to celebrate the good that they do as well. And i think that the children, for these kids that are underprivileged that dont get an opportunity to go to a game, why not, i know that i have the opportunity to purchase four tickets. Right. To a home game, 41 times. Who sits in those seats, thats up to me. I chose to have 2 underprivileged children that nt ha the oortunity and two Police Officers that have the opportunity now to minung well underprivileged kids who maybe have only ever seen cops in a bad light am but now they are at a preds game that they have never been to, they get seats and great food in the patron lounge, that is i shoutout, they dont sponsor me but i know that is where you get the food. They get to meet the players after the game, they get to meet me, i dont know if that is a good or bad thing but they get to meet me and it is celebratory. The biggest thing i have taken from this program so far was an email i got from one of the officers who took it upon himself to stay in touch with the child after the game, said i will stay in touch with this kid. Were going to go to many more games because i got season particulars, we have the email, and it was one the best things. It was the best feeling i ever had since the program started.
