Advances in DNA technology have helped solve several older cases and bring closure to victims who never thought they would have answers.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement began using genetic testing at its lab in Pensacola in the late 1990s, said Senior Crime Lab Analyst Jennifer Hatler.
Soon after, investigators at law enforcement agencies, including the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, began applying the new technology to solve older cases.
“It was right away. They’re very clever and asked if some of these older cases could be worked,” Hatler said. “With Okaloosa, we actually have solved several cases. They are very dedicated to these unsolved cases. It seems like that is their main focus is to go back and look at these older cases.”
