Well, the following Breaking News here on cnn, im Boris Sanchez live near Tampa Bay alongside my coanchor, Brianna Keeler in the Nations Capital and Hurricane Milton is inching closer and closer to sata, to west florida, Gulf Coast of florida right now, youre attempt they were watching low tide its start to set in the water began to recede. And that water is coming back with a dangerous Storm Surge anticipated between up to eight to 15 feet along the Gulf Coast, 15 feet in sarasota would prove devastating. Here in Tampa Bay. As you can see behind me, it is coming down the Water Fuel previously, we are starting to get to the point of maximum rainfall. And this will be sustained throughout the evening hours into tomorrow Hurricane Milton is proving to be an unprecedented storm yesterday, strengthening to a category five. And as it gets closer to florida, though it does begin to change and expand those Wind Speeds have started to slowly come down. That doesnt mean that the danger is any less because the Storm Surge, it is packing is historic. We want to go live to release the rapper whose in the Weather Center for us i wasnt. What are you seeing there yeah, we are looking at those center winds down, down, down to 100 130 miles per hour, maintaining that category four strength again, still looking at it, headed towards the West Coast, there are florida, but the impacts have already been starting all day. I mean, weve got the Heavy Rain Coming in lots of lightning, Wind Gusts right now in st. Petersburg is up to 53 miles per hour. Winds sustained. Theyre at 37 miles per hour. The Tornado Warning things have been numerous. This is common when you have a hurricane making landfall, those outer bands meet friction with the land and spin up tornadoes. But the amount of Tornado Warnings that weve seen and a lot of these have really discrete cells that have been able to produce tornadoes that are warning with considerable damage. I mean, weve been able to see clear Fault Anoles in the sky over parts of Alligator Alley and South Florida from these tornadoes, its really just been remarkable looking at all of these Tornado Warnings, that Tornado Threat continues until 9 00 this evening. The watch is in effect for most of the peninsula. But as we keep mentioning no matter what the category of the Wind Speed is, the storm is still taking with sloshing it into the West Coast of florida. So these Storm Surge numbers will still stay very elevated even as that Wind Speed in the center of the storm comes down, star still looking at ten to 15 feet of Storm Surge from sarasota down number of Storm Surge that happened in helene just two weeks ago, even as far south as naples and Merkel Islands still looking at up to eight feet of Storm Surge again, just some remarkable numbers. These this is what the unsurvivable part is of a storm. You have to run away from the ocean, that ocean coming inland is the part that is unsurvivable when you look at the wins again, the purple here winds of 110 miles per hour or greater Hurricane Force winds stretching to the East Coast of florida as well. This well call it widespread Power Outages, not just on the coast. Were looking at even orlando, looking at Wind Damage from Hurricane Force winds stretching all the way to the atlantic. Another complicating factor is we have this front thats whats in part, is Steering Milton here. Its whats turning it into the florida peninsula, depending on where this front is . Well, really control those wobbles that weve been watching now, wobble to the north and the wobble to the south, that will really put that bullseye and who gets the worst Storm Surge. But what its also doing is compounding the Heavy Rain is sucking in a lot of moisture. Were going a lot of Heavy Rain in this with a front and the hurricane. We also will find the Winds Compound Meaning as well as its with the front as well. All of this happening late tonight, going into tomorrow as it plows across the florida peninsula, we always talk about the Storm Surge from the ocean, but we also will find flooding from the sky, Rain Totals again because of the combination of the front and the hurricane, youre looking i had a pretty big swath that could find Rain Totals six to 12 inches or more, that will cause Flash Flooding and urban flooding in areas that are even not near issued 4 of the time, but week at 80 of our damages and 40 until that fatalities out of risk days like this or of rain expected for the Tampa Bay area coming. First and st, as far preparations from what you have seen, do you think the Gulf Coast is ready . For milton absolutely. Weve been working on this nonstop under the governors leadership, making sure that people heed those Evacuation Orders leading up to this moment. Weve seen a tremendous amount of people that have evacuated. Thank god. We have shelters available. We have the linemen that are ready to deploy once the storm has moved out because were expecting major Power Outages and weve got national guardsman, weve got Search And Rescue crews. Weve got folks that are going to help with debris, but all of those things have been put in place and we feel the florida is ready. Of course, were bracing for the worst. We see this storm is going to be catastrophic, especially with the Storm Surge, the winds, the Torrential Downpour and so were really bracing for the worst. But of course we feel extremely prepared as we get ready to brace the storm Lieutenant Governor, there are a number of complicating factors with this storm mentally, do you have that again set to be recordbreaking Storm Surge . Very strong winds. You also have tornadoes that have been and Confirm Touchdown as far away as broward county, were here in Tampa Bay. The storm is set to make Landfall Somewhere Near Sarasota and yet youre seeing Confirm Touchdown tornadoes. Now before it even makes landfall. As far as western broward county, what would you say is your biggest concern for residents out of all the potentials of War Danger sure yeah. And thats why the governor has declared a State Of Emergency for 51 of the 67 counties because we recognize not just the area thats going to be directly impacted by the eye of the storm. But this storm is so massive, its going to have farreaching implications. And to your point the Tornado Watch that were under throughout a good part of the state. Thats going to continue to be an area of focus and were encouraging people s conditions are deteriorating as we speak. And so even though obviously Tampa Bay sarasota mancy, all of those areas are bracing for direct impact. What we want people to understand is that this is going to come but across the state through i4, a heavily florida on up to the north florida, it is going to be significant. So we want people to stay home, be safe, and take care of themselves and their Loved Ones tell you this, but there are people pull literally outside right now taking selfies with the storm behind them. So some folks have heeded the warnings and Neighbor Vacuum waited and theyve gotten far as as far as they can from the Evacuation Zones. And he had others dont appear to be listening to local officials. There is sadly, in every storm, folks that want to stay put, they want to Hunker Down. They dont want to leave their home. But really the governor has been focused on Sharing Information we have shared on multiple platforms. He has had multiple Press Conferences every day, several pressing conferences. We have shared from the states perspective, all of the relevant information thats why we encourage people to follow fl cert. Thats Fl Sert on all Social Media platforms, as well as our website, florida disaster. Org, in terms of the federal response that governor has been laserfocused. He has worked with the fenton, the fema administrator. He has spoken to the president and so were going to continue to coordinate and collaborate. Were not going to get caught up in all of this political backandforth and were not going to talk about whats out there in the, in the X Platform and all the twitter sphere, were going to focus on keeping 30 and safe and making sure they have access to information from this date yeah. Lieutenant Governor Governor Desantis was clear earlier in his remarks saying that no one should subscribe to that nonsense, that that essentially the response has to be on the immediate concerns, the immediate danger. He pointed out that he believes that a lot of folks are profiting off of thats sort of misinformation. I do have a sound bite, Lieutenant Governor, i dont want to play for you. My colleague, Dana Bash just interviewed Vice President Kamala Harris and she asked her specifically about the topic of misinformation. Lets play that sound now spoken with local officials who have been struck, for example, by Hurricane Helene. And they are doing an extraordinary job in trying to combat the misinformation im talking about sheriffs. Im talking about mayors. Im talking about local officials. I dont even know their Party Affiliation by the way. But leaders on the ground who know that it is not in the best interest of the people living in those areas to not know their rights, not to know what theyre entitled to them to be afraid of seeking help. It is dangerous, it is it is unconscionable, frankly that anyone who can so to themselves, a leader would mislead desperate people to the point that those desperate people would not receive the aid to which they are entitled. And thats why i call it dangerous. And we all know its dangerous. And the gamesmanship has to stop at some point, the politics have to end, especially in a moment of crisis and the crises that weve been seeing effects so many people and they blocked ive met people whove lost Family Members do Hurricane Helene. We know the desperation and the fear that the folks were attempting to evacuate florida are experiencing the last thing that they deserve is to have a socalled leader make them more afraid than they already are what your responses well, i mean, certainly the Vice President yesterday jumped into a little bit of the political fray by teasing Governor Desantis of being irresponsible or perhaps not taking her paul, i think we hear that up quickly. The governor has focused on making sure we have all available resources working in tandem with our federal partners are hopeful for so i think that at the end of the day, our focus and our priority has to be preservation of life, which is why we can you to press upon people. If you can seek shelter, safety at this point, please do so. Any roads have been closed, many bridges are closed. Now is not the time to be deciding what youre going to your home stay home, Hunker Down, and seize, please. I want it to be safe and make sure that the end of the day you can follow Fl Sir . I do want to talk Just A Little Bit first before we talk talking about some of the takeaways from Vice President harris, its very clear in all of these discussions that were hearing the briefings that were seeing, whether youre hearing from governor ron desantis, whether youre hearing from the Lieutenant Governor, there is this always i think a sensitivity on the part of politicians, especially right now, we are about a month out from election day. People are already voting. Theres always a sensitivity to how unnatural disaster may help or hurt a candidate. And yet, this is really not the time for that, right . This is we were hours away from landfall, florida getting a onetwo punch from helene and now milton well bri thats right. And in Vice President harriss case, you have someone who is both the Vice President in the leadership at the white House And Someone who is at the top of the ticket trying to run for election in election thats going to be decided in less than a month. And so you, are i think youre exactly right it is american tradition that politicians dont politicize the storm when its happening. But what we have seen in this case is that the storm has become a political fodder and that there is significant amount of misinformation being spread the past president and Vice President harris, his rival Donald Trump and i think so, i think there are two things at play here. And one is a desire from public officials at the state, county, local level, and the White House to help get people to safety and give them accurate information and of course, harris because as the candidate, also understand that when you are the party in power, when you are at the White House, if the management of a storm goes poorly people will blame you and it will hurt you politically and if the management of the storm is competent and if lives are saved the political hope is they would be rewarded or at least that it would not impact you hey, look, they will be judged and they should be judged. But at this moment we are staring down the barrel of this thing and all efforts need to be focused on getting people to safety. Thats one of the things i think was a pretty interesting about the fact that she had this interview you would dana on the heels of what was a very public briefing with administration officials and the president and the Vice President , margaret. I noticed Gas Station after Gas Station was shut down and i kept watching folks try to to approach them to see if they had gas. But for a lot of folks, it seems like its too late now yeah, boris, that has been a major problem and its because demand has been through the roof. I mean, thankfully millions of people have heeded those Evacuation Orders and then some of the people whove stayed, theyve been filling up tanks to try to power for their generators. And this has been an even a bigger issue in some of those areas that are bracing to get hit the hardest. I wonder what goes through your mind knowing that that kind of damage is possible . Given that were watching Hurricane Milton inch closer yeah, it is its a kick in the gut. I mean, were two years just after he and many of the residents and businesses are just gotten getting back on their feet to go through this again, its going to be traumatic for all were hoping for the best one of the things that i noticed about the western part of florida, at least the parts that ive been through since we arrived was that there were still a lot of damage from Hurricane Helene strewn about here in tampa in the tampa area. Folks had gathered them into large piles. Im wondering what its like where you are if you sort of see a lot of that debris is still out near fort Myers Beach yeah. Theres still a lot of debris out and everyone just still clearing out from helene well, unfortunately, youre the damage than we got from helene working, probably see again with milton feel like you have what you need . Its set to make landfall in sarasota in a few hours packing 100 140 plus mile an hour winds. A 15 foot Storm Surge, they are potentially about eight to 12 feet here in Tampa Bay many areas along the coast that kind of Storm Surge is devastating. It could be a Record Setting as well as it is forecasted well, i want to go live now to ease up a little solace. Whos in another part of tampa and his you are familiar with this area . Im wondering what you are seeing and what you have heard from folks that have decided to Hunker Down so this is the hillsborough bay, right . This is connected to the Tampa Bay. Folks have been warning about potentially up to 12 feet of Storm Surge. But what were seeing right now, just because of the path that milton is taking at the moment, what were seeing is a reverse surge, a phenomenon that can happen as the storm approaches from the west, the Easterly Winds can actually push the, the waters away from the coast. So its the opposite of a Storm Surge We Saw this dramatically back in 2022 with Hurricane Ian. Were parts of the seafloor were actually exposed. People walking on the Tampa Bay. That is not happening here as of this moment. But obviously, officials warning people, this is no time to give us i relief over Storm Surge. We could still see that potential of 12 feet. Clearly now, what im experiencing is this Heavy Rain Heavy Rain, heavy Wind Gusts just slapping you in the face yeah. Yeah. A big difference from two hours ago and in terms of people and what theyre doing, i would say that people took it back tuition seriously, especially here in the Davis Island area. But i want to point something out right over here. This boat right here, i met a gentleman. And in terms of evacuations, things have gotten more complex here in the last two hours again, because the bridges in and out of Pinellas County one hillsborough county, manatee county. So this is the sunshine skyway, the gandy, the courtney campbell, these bridges have been closed because of this wind making for a more complex situation. Oh, my god, youre still there. Yeah hi are you doing okay doing great. Yeah. Youre still still riding this out you are you are drier than i am at this moment. So you havent changed your mind, right . Please be safe, sir please be safe that officials have for folks because its not just Storm Surge, but this heavy, intense winds that could reach up to 100 115 miles per hour making for a very dangerous scenario. I think our sheriff put it best if youre going to take that risk, then be best to just write your name on your clothing so we can identify they are literally putting their lives at risk and at a certain point when we get 50 mile an hour sustained winds, we will not be responding to Emergency Calls because we dont want to put our first responders at risk. People need to take this storm seriously. We had six feet of surge during Hurricane Helene almost a dozen lives were lost in Pinellas County and the city of st. Petersburg. This coming storm, milton has the capacity to double that Storm Surge. And so people are literally putting their lives at risk and we dont want them to put the lives of our public responders at risk as well yes such an important message as we heard from the national Hurricane Center a few moments ago now is the time to shelter in place conditions are only going to get worse and worse as milton gets closer and the hours go on, mayor, talk to us about some of the preparations that have been made. Some of the closures, and some of the effort for to get debris from Hurricane Helene removed because i know some of that i saw some of it firsthand. We still strewn about different parts of the area that most folks in our cities, st. Petersburg and in our county i have responded to the call to evacuate either out of the city, out of the county, or to higher ground within the city. We have plenty of Shelter Space available and people have really responded to that. The benefit of that is that most of the debris he is in areas that are Evacuation Zone. Weve evacuated zones a Through C and so we of course know municipality was able to clear the debris from Hurricane Helene in just a few days. Were talking six months of debris that were trying to clean up in six days, you simply cant do that and so our hope is that most folks that and those evacuations have moved out debris will cause a hazard and will complicate the cleanup going forward, but we are focusing now on saving lives, protecting lives. And we think weve done a good job at that. People are responding to the call two evacuated the debris is going to be a major issue. This has been the most impactful Storm Helene was to date. And now on top of it, milton will be impactful and so were looking at months of cleanup after this difficult process that is, once the storm gets through and hopefully folks have heeded those warnings.
