Im Pamela Brown here in washington and were following two big stories about the economy this morning. The latest Jobs Report is out and it blew away expectations, added tentative deal has ended the Port Strike that. Threatened to damage the Economy Thousands of longshoremen are returning to work today. Were going to have more on that in just a moment. But first lets get straight to cnns Matt Egan to break down these latest Job Numbers for us that the Biden Demonstration is applauding this morning, matt, will pamela it feels rare that we get positive surprises, but yes, weve had two in just the last 18 hours. First, the Port Strike ending suddenly and now these Jobs Numbers that came in much stronger than expected, lowing away forecast, this is a very healthy number in any environment, but especially now because theres been all these concerns that maybe the Jobs Market is slowing down. But when we look at the trend, we can see that actually hiring is accelerating the third straight month a faster hiring. This was actually the most jobs added since march. The Unemployment Rate was expected to hold steady. Some are bracing for an increase, but look at this, it went down to 4. 1 . That is historically very low. University of michigan Economist Justin wolfers. He described these numbers to me as quote, incredible fantastic. And the kind of numbers we dream about when you dig into the report, we can see that hiring was strong across many different sectors, leisure and hospitality, retail, government, all of them adding jobs. The only blemish was manufacturing, which lost jobs wages. They accelerated that shows strong demand for workers, paychecks are now growing up are now increasing much faster astor them prices. That is very good news so you put all this together, pamela, and it paints the picture of a very resilient Jobs Market, much more resilient than people were expecting. All right. Matt egan, thanks for bringing us the latest on that friday. We want to turn now to our other economic story this morning, Tens Of Thousands Dockworkers at ports along the East And Gulf coast are back on the job after a Threeday Strike if their walkout had continued, it could have had a widespread impact on the and kadomi, cnns Vanessa Yurkevich joins us now vanessa, how did this tentative deal to end the strike come together yeah, there were growing economic pressures, growing consumer pressures, and growing political pressures to get this deal done. And ultimately, yesterday, according to our colleague kayla tausche, she President Biden nudged his economic advisors to put pressure on usmx, which represents the ship lines to put a better offer, a better deal on the table to try to get these workers back on the job in one of those economic advisers was lael brainard. She spoke last hour about what this deal ultimately entails. Take a listen i think it is important that the companies came forward to make a generous wage commitment. Thats important because these workers for the six previous years, some years they didnt see any wage gains other years they saw only 1 and dont forget these are workers that came out every day during covid. They risked their lives to keep goods moving for american families and consumers now this tentative wages alone. Heres whats in the deal. Theres a 4 an Hour Increase for the six years of the contract, but thats all they agreed to. They still have to work everything else out. But in that time, everyone is going back on the job starting today and their current Contract Fact is going to be extended through january 15. And thats were theyre going to work on a lot of the other details, but ultimately, pamela, its the Rank And File Union Members who are going to have the final say so that theyre going to keep be paying close attention to exactly what ends up coming out in this deal, especially around automation packing their jobs to make sure they have jobs to return to when this is all said and done, pamela. All right. So what does all this mean for the hoarding that weve been seeing even for toilet paper, which really had nothing to do with this, but thats a side point. Could we see any impact from Fridays Strike . Likely not. Its interesting because ports often closed for days on end because of bad weather. This is just a situation where everyone was paying attention to exactly why these ports were closed. And as you mentioned, the impact that weve seen so far has really been Panic Buying alone. There have really been no shortages to report and ultimately, things are going to start to get back on track pretty quickly, pamela. All right. So one of our neighbors, paulo, was trapped in her collapsed house and we were texting and at the time and she was able to escape alive course when the water receded she was medevaced out and the neighbor another neighbors whose house flipped over onto his head was also medevacked apps if she got out of her house alive wow how frightening though, to be trapped in that situation. We have had amazing communitys help us to find teachers. Its very hard right now. Its overwhelming due to the lack of Cell Phone Connection and families that have been evacuated and loss of homes. And so we still have one teacher that we are searching for and the Fairview Area but youre right now as we are finding teachers, we have all the teachers in Black Mountain Primary School and we found all the teachers and deputy williams elementary, which is in swannanoa, which is also a very hard hit area. They are turning to look for the children in their classrooms right now, we have teachers that are going doortodoor theyre trying to take supplies with them so that they can help out. We have eight complete classrooms at Wd Williams out of 23 the sweetest Janitor Mr. Jeffrey is helping. We have ms sizzler, who is the esl well, teacher trying to help us around the clock with multilingual families because that is very difficult to find right now, and especially in some of those areas, they were the hardest hit. And it is very overwhelming i feel like i can i can just sense the emotion that youre going through, just hearing you talk about it what does it feel like . That you know, its been one week and it feels like the longest short ever, like it feels like years of Work Weve done. Most people are working 12 to 15 hours a day people are exhausted. And luckily, as were having unity supports come in and as people are trying to help us that have experienced what a hurricane is before, weve not experienced this especially in this magnitude. But as people are coming in, theyre preparing us that this is going to be a very long process. And it is just so emotional. I mean, we have these highs where we find somebody and were so excited and, you we were able to find them. We found a teacher in georgia, her family had rescued her, but she just wasnt able to take any of her thing thanks and she got a hold of family and raleigh, who i went to High School with and they got a hold of me through that the community is amazing through teachers. We have a beautiful story of a group of teachers that are getting together. The children in hendersonville right now to start a little Football League because do you know football . It just started up and they were so excited they dont think a longer have any Normalcy Pamela than normalcy for this, the normal way in this hurricane i have chills from that, we should get them on the show to talk about you know, there are efforts to try to create some of that normalcy that helene washed away as you so aptly put it what about the response . I mean, i hear you talking a lot about the teachers coming together and, the School Janitor and the administrator peters. But what about the response from the government, from the state and the federal level . What have you seen on that front we are starting to see things come in. We are getting helicopters and supplies and were starting to be able to assess what are teachers need. Some of our teachers, ive been able to go back to their schools. Some schools do not have access at all, but those that are able to access their buildings, some of their classrooms are completely empty, like they have nothing. As we began to start assessing these situations will be able to target, but i will tell you that kaplan, which is a School Supplier here, has reached out to be able to offer their so the weve heard all the way from east carolina university, their teacher Support Program. There has reached out to us because theyve been through hurricanes. They know what this is like on the state level. Were definitely hearing from all these communities that can help and thats what we need to realize is we are very small, tiny communities, but were all connected and were all working to share these resources together. And there were actually gone, man who drove off to philadelphia from virginia, who were trying to get into the Convention Center with weapons at that time well, what about like when you had to take a break or leave the Convention Center, how concerned are you about safety during that time it was really challenging to leave. We had to leave through the back even when we could get out mean most of the time we didnt leave without exaggerating when i woke up Tuesday Morning on Election Day, i actually didnt go back to sleep until friday all right we just couldnt stop counting the votes because there were so many ballots to count in philadelphia that we had to do it around the clock for days on end. So really a challenge to leave the bench the center at all. So you didnt sleep from tuesday to friday . Wow. I wouldnt ask you because in pennsylvania, by law, you Cant Start counting the votes until the morning of the election what are you expecting in terms of when were going to Find Out the results and what concerns do you have about the vacuum been filled with misinformation leading to potentially dangerous situations against Election Workers in that time gap everywhere i go, i always start by saying the window of time from when the Election Date closes and the polls are closed until the race can be called. That but window of opportunity where missing disinformation can spread the most. And thats when the harassment and the threats began so that window, we need to shrink it down as much as possible. And weve done everything we can in philadelphia and across the commonwealth to improve our operations so that we can do that even though the wall did not change and we will not be allowed to start until Election Day takes a lot of time to count ballots. There are hundreds of thousands of ballots inside of two envelopes, each, which means you are handling 600,000 to 1 Million pieces of paper that well take at least a couple of days to get through all of those ballots and whether or not the race can be called will really be dependent on the margin of the election. And in this way, they can disrupt our whole civil process and also steal information and theyre also creating fake News Sites where yeah, so a month ago, this comes almost exactly a month ago where the Department Of Justice swept up this thing called double gardner, which means, you know, two faces and in that operation they were setting up things like fake cnn sites, fake Washington Post Side its fake Fox News sites. And also using influencers, americans who were unwitting to put out their propaganda and to make things look more authentic. And so this is the problem that americans have, is that its really hard for americans to be able to see the difference between what is real and coming from trusted source and what is being put out by the russian government and the iranians did the same thing and i want to talk about the iranians just a second. But in terms of comparison, what were seeing now from the russians compared to 2020. How does it stack up so in 2020, the russians really did start this whole idea of trying to infiltrate our system and use americans to put out their message. Now, they are expanding that in order to look like americans and use them americans. And so we are seeing a lot more sophistication and certainly is being aided by ai in that they can create more authentic looking sites. And when they fish someone like you, they can research you and figure out messages that will make you think that you know, or are somehow acquainted with this person who is emailing you. And what about other countries that are also interfering like iran and the da, different objectives there. Yeah so its so interesting because Russia And China, we see this whole thing right now where we talk a lot about Russia And China and Iran Ron and North Korea all being in the same group. But in fact, in this election, iran absolutely wants to defeat Donald Trump. I mean, they are trying to influence americans to vote against Donald Trump just like they did in 2020. And the russians are continuing just like in 2016 to undermine the democratic Party Candidate and preferring Donald Trump. So that juxtaposition is kind of interesting. So you have to kind of things working together, but at cross purposes russias still the most sophisticated and the most active of all of the parties. Iran is less sophisticated, but they are more aggressive and more daring and they dont care at all about whether they get caught the chinese are involved, but they tend to be involved more at the state and local level. And then really big picture sure like putting out ai media, these images that make people in the united states and other countries think that our Democracy Isnt working and that we are the source of all problems in the world really important information.
