A new hour of Cnn News central starts right now all right. Breaking this morning, we are standing by to see how and when israel responds to the iranian Missile Strike, what the troop movements this morning tell us about all of that as iran claims, it does not want a Wider War. What the numbers tell us about what changed after the Vice President ial debate as Donald Will Trump takes a new position on Abortion And President biden on his way to see the damage of Hurricane Helene with new accounting of a staggering Death Toll im John Berman with Kate Baldwin and sara sidner, New York. Erin burnett is in Tel Aviv. This is Cnn News central classes being described as at close range now happening today this morning between Israel And Hezbollah terrorists inside lebanon the idf moments ago, just reported an israeli soldier was killed. This comes as the world is watching and waiting to see how israel will respond to irans unprecedented Missile Attack around largest aerial attack ever on israel officials say nearly 200 missiles were fired at Israel Netanyahu says, iran will pay a Big Question now, is what role the United States could play in that retaliation. Cnns erin burnett, its been kind enough to join us all throughout the show today. Shes in Tel Aviv once more for us. Whats the very latest that youre hearing, erin . You know, it, kate, that that is a crucial question is what role could the u. S play . What role will the United States be willing to play . And then perhaps the third and most important question is what role does israel want the u. S. To play . And obviously they want us backing. They see this as a moment where they could seize on that. Im here with Jim Sciutto. Are of course a fellow anchor and chief national Security Analyst and you know, jim, this is, this is the Wider War protestations at this point this is a Wider War that is what were looking at. And the question is where are you on an Escalation Scale . Its a good point. I mean, its a multifront war that had been the concern since october 7. You have war in gaza. There were more strikes today. You now have israeli boots on the ground inside lebanon for the first time an 18 years, you had israel take its longest aerial strike ever by aircraft on yemen. A couple of days ago, 1,500 miles away. And now of course you have the wait here. Israel getting struck by iran and now the question about how israel responds to that. So were in a Wider War. The question is, how much wider and broader and how a far does israel go now in terms of retaliating . So, ok, so on this now you know, in prior months, you know, you had heard so much of the schism within the israeli government, right . That there was maybe netanyahu and the hard liners and then there were people who were very pro israel and believe in the importance of this moment, but could not stand Bibi Netanyahu when nasrallah was taken out, there moment of coming together this Missile Strike it from some quarters and some voices appears to have added to that moment, i think the combination of the success of the strikes against Hezbollah Bola taking apart the entire leadership, the entire communications network, really putting hezbollah on its Backfoot Plus the threat the shared sense the threat from iran when you have your country and its understandable and you have a Country Fire at 180 ballistic missiles at us, some of which struck, they strike, i mean, did there we can see the holes weve seeing them. I mean, theyre trying to fill them in fast, but we could we when we were in the room yesterday, i mean, im pointing over here half a kilometer away. One struck there and then just a couple of miles up around masad. So yep. And then on the two Air Bases as well. So thats an understandable but also a dangerous combination of things which could lead to listen at least a harder, more aggressive strike than us officials would be comfortable with it. And so thats the big Question Right . Then what does the u. S. Do youve had huge increase in Force Posture . Yeah. Thats the reality. There can be efforts to downplay it by the biden administration, but that those are the hard numbers on the ground thats the reality of it. And israel wants, they want the us and with them on this all the way. But a lot of the things that theyre talking about, maybe too far for what many in the u. S. Administration would want, whether thats strange in nuclear facilities are taking out senior members of the iranian government. Listen the u. S. Has shown that it will participate in some, but not all, of israels military operations. It absolutely took part Last Night in defending israel. There were two us destroyers that helps shoot down these missiles that they made it quite clear before they would help defend and that, that remains when israel went into lebanon on the ground, us officials made quite clear to me and others, were not participating in this this this, were not supporting israeli ground operations. They also said the same about the strike on nasrallah. So i would expect that in conversations between Tel Aviv and washington right now the u. S. Is saying the things that it would not support israel on. The question is whether the distinction the u. S. Is making on that makes a difference when it comes to iran saying those things in private but in public perceives another way could but over oftentimes when the u. S. Has protested and israel has moved forward anyway, right . Maybe in one of those moments, a precarious moment in a Wider War, sara all right. Thank you so much. Erin burnett and Jim Sciutto there live for us from Tel Aviv joining me now, democratic congressman from New York gregory meeks. He is also the Ranking Member of the house foreign affairs committee. Thank you so much, sir, for being with us this morning. I do want to get your assessment because you are on that committee of what is happening in the Middle East do you think we have entered into a Wider War . For now but im very concerned this is what ive been concerned about all along. That we could be entering into a wider royal, Wider War. I think that iran has made a mistake by shooting the ballistic missiles at israel. Unlike what took place before and i think that i know that the united States Government is still monitoring the situation and collecting information. And we got to continue and i hope that israel and the United States, we had to work together on this to protect the interest of israel, to protect the interests of the United States of America Youve got to stand with israels right to exist and for me it is important because i want to get 75 years of trying to destroy israel. I want that to stop. It has to stop. We right direction, i thought with reference to when i looked at Saudi Arabia well be talking in recognizing israels right to exist. And of course, Egypt And Jordan and the uae thats what effect that people want in ultimately to have some kind of resolution that israel can live sidebyside with his neighbors. Clearly, what iran, and its position has been, what it did yesterday, but shooting the missiles and then continuing to say, israel does not have the right to exist, does not lead to that. But i think they are working collectively together in the region. The region is different and used to be where every where there were Saudi Arabia or Egypt And Jordan, all were saying that israel did not have the right to exist that has changed. And so i dont want to lose sight of that because ultimately in The End, i think what we want is peace in the Middle East, peace for the people of israel. Piece for the people in the region. And i think that the region wants that overwhelmingly with the exception of iran. And thats why ron has made a big mistake this time. How far do you think the United States should go in supporting israel when it comes to iran, for example, you know, do you think the United States should start taking its own action militarily against iran so i think that there needs to be that kind of conversation between again, with the United States and israel. I think that, you know, weve got to do and look at whats in the best strategic interests and what will be impactful on iran to try to get them to move from saying israel, theres no longer have the right to exist and the iranian people so, but i dont want to get dragged into, but i dont think that we dont want i dont think that the israelis want an endless war so at some Point Weve still got to talk and the administration is talking about how we can deescalate tensions in the Middle East. I think thats still has to be part of that Dialogue And Conversation how we can make a Feeling Hell have a future where diplomacy takes center stage. I think thats still important. I think weve got to never lose sight of that because our to believe what we want is peace in the region. I think thats what everyone wants. Thats what israel wants, and thats why they have fought against its aggressors who have clearly stated that israel did not have the right to exist. Thats why he was a mistake by hamas on october the seventh to attack israel because that said, and thats what they were telling me is barely people who did not have the right to exist and israel has the right to defend itself and i liked the fact that others, now that we saw even with the previous attack, the april attack, we saw others that were in the region thats good sidebyside with israel and it was not easy having to do it by itself because people want peace in the Middle East. And thats what the ultimate goal is and i would hope that iran now will go on the stand based upon are some of the responses that will have to take place in that, you know, look at the region differently. Thats tried to find a way to so that everyone can live sidebyside. You have a free independent state of israel a jewish state of israel. You have a Twostate Solution when you have a palestinian state, you have others countries that are there living and recognizing one another. And finally, having a real a piece in the region. I think thats the golden, i dont want to lose sight of that it sounds good, but it is much harder to bring forth. Congressman gregory meeks. Thank you so much for coming on this morning and police say hi to your lovely wife. Appreciate you. I noticed the change within the first week and each month the weight just kept coming off with go low. You can keep the weight off you look at the news of the week and ask questions like, what does a Comedy Show doing on cnn to watch . I want donald know, can you slice that i got news for you saturday at nine on cnn in the first and only Vice President ial debate, the fact that civility is the headline says everything about the state of american Politics Today and that is what you saw when Jd Vance and Tim Walz all took the stage for 90 minutes, obviously, they disagreed especially over the 2020 election he is still saying he didnt lose the election. I would just ask, did he lose the 2020 election . Tim, im focused on the future. Did Kamala HarrisCensor Americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 20 covid situation. That is that is a nonanswer both Running Mates making clear efforts to target their attacks toward the top of the ticket rather than at the person standing feet away from them on the stage. And a lot of midwest nice on display i agree it should not take seven years for an Asylum Claim to be done i agree with you. I think you want to solve this problem, but i dont think that Kamala Harris does. I agree with a lot of what Senator Vance said about whats happening. His Running Mate though, does not. And thats the problem, governor, i agree with the Amber Thurman should still be alive and there are a lot of people who should still be alive but i certainly wish that she was, im in agreement with them on this first of audit. Know that youre 17yearold witnesses shooting, and im sorry about that. And i appreciate christ, have mercy joining us right now is former white House Director of message plan. Planning, planning for President BidenMeghan Hays and strategic Communications Expert for former republican Strategist And Pollster lee carter. Guys, thanks for coming in. Meghan, you called this a pretrump Era Debate Walz looked nervous especially off the top everyone saw that the way Jen Psaki described it, her take was she the way she put it as missing the magic and the organic spontaneity of Tim Walz. What did you see Last Night . Yeah. I think he was absolutely nervous. I mean, i would also be very nervous on that stage as well. And then he got into his groove and i think he did very well. I think that the highlights for him or obviously the issues on Reproductive Rights, i think he was very strong mare, i think he pushed back really appropriately on immigration and some other top areas. I do think that that hits shining moment where the dials really high according to a lot of the polls, were the last question about if he can stay that Donald Trump lost the election. And i think that the independent voters and these swing states, thats what people are noticing. Do they really want someone who cant say that theyre both lost the election at the last person in the room when theyre making these crucial decisions during a War Time and during some of these other crises it sees that you face as the president and Vice President. So i think that that was a really telling moment for walz, and i think that both of them did no harm, and i think that we will all move on to the next major News Event in the cycle. We have all survived, will all move on together and to your point that that was a high a high point. The campaign the Harris Campaign seems to think so we have new reporting that theyre cutting an ad with that moment about the 2020 election question. An ad for that leaves some people saw Jd VanceLast Night is kind of working to soften some of the sharp edges that are Donald Trump and trumps message to voters the democratic governor of colorado, who is a surrogate for the Harris Campaign was on with john this morning and i want to play for you what he said to that idea if youre if youre looking for a car salesman, hes your guy. I mean, i think he looked at shifty. He looked at slick. Of course, hes good at what he does. He talks to the different groups in different ways. No question about it. But The End of the day, he failed to say he would side with the american people over Donald Trump lee you held a Focus GroupLast Night. What did you see Last Night so i saw that democrats really didnt believe Jd Vance. They said he seemed nice very much in line with what we just heard from the governor here. But i think that independent voters, republicans will refresh to see a softer side. Events they were actually many people said they really know what to expect. They listen to to mason. I appreciate that they can disagree without demonizing. He talked about a lot of issues some ways that resonated. He got away from the abortion to unscathed, which i think is a big deal because this is his weak spot for republicans i think overall Jd Vance came away with more fans than he went in with is it going to change votes . Absolutely not. There was not one voter that i talked to Last Night that end up changing their mind. But people had a more favorable impression of Jd Vance than they expected to favourability. He did go in with historically low favorability. I remember Harry Enten has done an analysis of that any improvement to be made there, im sure im sure he and the campaign will be happy about meghan. Do you think Last Night did anything to make a second debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump . More likely no, i dont think Last Night is going to change that dynamic. I think that trump is going to see how things are going in the next couple of weeks before the debate and see if he feels that he needs to go back out there and take another swing at it and to see what he can do i dont think he will show up for another debate. I dont see why he would do that i dont he does not like to lose any clearly lost the last one. So i just dont see him putting himself in that situation again, but i dont think Last Night would change his mind on that. I want to ask you, especially because you have this inside of the Focus Group, one statement from Jd Vance that stuck out. Its something to do with abortion, Reproductive Rights. What he said, he was asked about the Campaign Stance its on Abortion Rights. And vance said this as a republican who proudly wants to protect innocent life in this country who probably wants to protect the vulnerable. Is that my Party Weve got to do so much better of a job at earning the american Peoples Trust back on this issue where they fell frankly, just dont trust us earning the american Peoples Trust back on this issue. But trumps take on Abortion Rights and Reproductive Rights include statements like hes proudly the person responsible for killing roe versus wade. Trump says hes done exactly what he intended to do why does Jd Vance saying he needs to earn back the Peoples Trust i think that the republicans have done a very, very bad job talking about their position here, their position on abortion is actually not the popular position among americans. And so theyre really fighting upstream. So the way that theyve dealt with for this has made women feel like theyre completely left behind, that they have no rights if if, if the republicans take office, i think Jd Vance was trying to say here that we need to do better and if we are going to take this position, we recognize that we need to support women in other ways. So this is the best choice and frankly, it was a refreshing answer to folks. Instead, the many people said this didnt seem as scary as other answers ive heard before. They want to hear that theres more support to women. Does it answer people whose primary concern is womens rights and abortion . Absolutely not. But again, i think theres showed a different side of Jd Vance and the republicans, and weve seen it until now for many people that was somewhat refreshing and made them feel less scary. Scary was a word i heard a lot before the groups that im very scared of whats going to happen if this person gets an office, im very afraid of the situation that were in in the Middle East or all of these other things . The end of the night, i heard a lot of people say they felt refreshed reassured, and so that was really positive dont worry, will scare them all over again once they wake up, wake up this morning and they read the headlines guys its great great to see you, but thank you very much, john. All right. Breaking this morning, israels Foreign Minister appears to announce it a ban on the Un Secretary General from during the country saying, he quote, does not deserve to set foot on israeli soil in the Death Toll from Hurricane Helene, It Rot is rising President Biden heading to the carolinas to assess the damage 123, 456789 reak. Try now fofor free visit otter. Ai. Ai o download the app to many projects and insane deadlines sink most renovation the project is three months past the deadline, but this is and allison, is that her bets . I love it im just in windy city rehab. All knew Tuesday Night at 8 00 on hgtv this morning, President Biden is traveling to North Carolina and South Carolina to see the extent of the damage from Hurricane Helene days after the Storm Hit, the Death Toll continues to rise now 166 people across six states thousands across North Carolina, are still without power and hundreds of roads are still closed. Some of them damaged beyond repair, making access to necessary supplies like Food And Water extremely difficult. Cnns Isabel Rosales is asheville, North Carolina, what is happening where you are this morning . Obviously, this is just such a dire situation for so many people still days after the Storm Hit to you, sara. Yes. So many people here in nashville, theyre trying to turn the page on this or trying to dig out and clean up and the conditions are certainly treacherous. You can see so much debris, so much money, so much destruction that they need to go through. This is going to take weeks to once have not years, to recover from this. But then sara, i also want to make it clear that right now there are still active Search And Rescue operations, so there are people trapped, cut off in the more mountainous areas with limited resources that are waiting for Rescue Crews to them because the road conditions, bridges have collapsed. Theres trees in the way. Theyre dealing with an Emergency Situations still. Now, biden has called helene a history making storm. He vowed that the federal government would be there for survivors as long as they need that, they would provide resources. And hes urging congress to approve even more funding to recover from this. Its going to take billions of dollars. He said, now he is expected to do a Briefing Over in raleigh and then fly over witnessing himself, these devastated areas, including right here in asheville and part of the reason he wont be here on the ground, sara is because conditions are so bad in these roads. Again, officials urging no travel that his Motorcade Cant make it through the city. Thats according to the mayor of asheville. He is predicting that this is going to take a while. And again, billions of dollars to make this right for western North Carolina sara, i know that you were able to get and go along on a ride along with the fema urban Search And Rescue team. What did you see and hear from them this was rare access for us. We were able to follow along with a Fema Team whos helping out the national guard with these active Search And Rescue missions that ive been talking about. So this was over in avery county, a very rural and mountainous area and we just went in circles and these winding roads, narrow Road W saw collapsed roads, trees all over the place, mud honestly, it was a little nerve wracking, Sara Driving in these conditions are portions of my tires that were right at the edge of this road crumbled in the area so i can certainly understand the challenges that these first responders theres are going through. It was really eyeopening, how slow they have to take it. But the biggest thing that popped out at me is the lack of communication that the regular citizens are experiencing here. But even more critical for them in the sense that they cant get through on the Cell Phones even Satellite Phones with these heavy Tree Canopies show difficult for Team Members should talk to one another. And again, a very timesensitive situation of finding folks that are in Trouble And Need help. Watch were seeing for saves everything that the governor has been talking about officials have been talking about the how big of a Challenge Communication is, not just for civilians, but you bet is trying to do these Rescue Operations dont have sales all of them coming challenge and slows things down tremendously how frustrating is that enough just cannot adapt and overcome Fema Supervisor who was leading us up this mountain. And for over an hour he was trying to get in touch with his team, but could not through regular Cell Phone Night even a satellite phone. And then just out of luck, his team, part of his team found him and we were able to reconnect there. But again, extremely eyeopening to see the challenges these first responders are going through sara. Yeah, the first responders, the residents, and the damage is so extensive. Thank you so much. Isabel rosales for bringing us that story to give us some sense of whats happening there. And what President Biden will be seeing today. John, right with me now is Zeb Smathers the may the canton North Carolina, not too too far from asheville. Mayor. Thank you so much. Being with us. Do you have a sense this morning of how many people in your community are still unaccounted for we simply do not because the communications issues that were still suffering from slowly it seemed to be to see all your service is returning. But even today, im getting message just from people across the u. S. My family lives in cant they live in asheville. We cant get hold of them. And youre simply scared what you do not know as we searched for our Loved Ones and cant be able to communicate it just puts no one at ease. So as services, communications hopefully gets better, then were going to have a better sense yes a boost still missing talking to someone earlier. I mean, its teachers still looking for students to be able to connect with. And so it is slowly getting better. We hope. But my worry is this is so many days after the storm our ability to communicate with our Emergency Service workers in the storm. And even family still looking for their Loved Ones today. Weve witnessed an absolute crippling effect of the failure of our Telecommunications System when we needed it the most it let us down and that is inexcusable are there still rescues taking place . Mean, again, as you just reported, a westward carolina one of our greatest shrinks is how wonderful and diverse our landscape is. But that makes him some areas that are absolutely still covered in trees, bridges, washed out. And Thats Something very important to us as we move forward in recovery it doesnt matter where you call home in western with carolina. We have to make sure that the recovery the supplies reach every point no matter where you call home and so again, we have No Doubt there still many families, many homes. There still isolated without communication without access, that we need to get to you seem frustrated. And thats an understatement exasperated with the Communications Service right now, particular the Cell Phone service, what do you what do you think went wrong here . And thats one of the great mysteries. I mean, to this day, i dont have those answers and i certainly received a Text Reminder over the weekend through starlink that my Verizon Bill was do so again, if you can send me a bill, you can get the Cell Phone for everyone in this region. And again, Thats Heart of this. Everybody, no matter where you live in westwood, carolina, deserves the ability to check on their Loved Ones. And this is something we saw from Day One the inability to communicate with our local Fire Department and rescue teams in the middle of the storm. I mean, we were putting a situation. We did not know what we were dealing with so ive said many times, were dealing with the recovery for a 21st Century Storm with 20th century technology. And thats not been official. Again, we know theres workers for these companies that are out here trying to do their best. My question is, is, how do we get in this situation . And we know therell be other storms across so you asked and i pray i pray that nobody in this country has to suffer. And i do mean suffer with our Telecommunications System. Absolutely the collapsing when we needed it the most very quickly, how long do you think itll take for you to rebuild . Years . I mean, can you know, three years ago we suffered remnants of tropical storm fred. We are still rebuilding, but we will rebuild. Ive got a lot of people ask me, is that this is your second storm in three years the alternative is that we leave than we give up on our home. We give up on our people. And i know the Grit And Grace that exists, not just in Haywood County but across the mountains of western North Carolina. It is going to be very, very challenging. Were thing about all the lives lost that number keeps going up. But there is No Doubt to order those ones lost were going to rebuild, were going to recover because thats the standard we have to live up to sacrifices that so many are making and were up to tasks. One of the most beautiful places in the country, Beautiful People to mayor Zeb Smathers. Thank you so much for being with us. Appreciate it. Its just so boggles the mind what theyre all up against them, what theyve already sustained in the last seven days. Its just truly well. We have some new images coming in just now of the damage in israel from bronze unprecedented Missile Strike, Missile Attack, there will bring those to you and soon new York Citys mayor, Eric Adams will be heading to Federal Court. He could get a Trial Date yet is a journeys are trying to get his charges dismissed Tel Aviv and here of course, a bigger War A Worry for everyone around the world. The war here, of course, widening overnight with that massive and unprecedented Missile Strike here on israel as we await Israels Response against iran, we do have a development here. The foreign Minister Erin Israel has declared the Un Secretary General a persona non grata, which essentially means it means that they have banned him from entering the country of israel. They say, for his lack of support, for israel and his unwillingness to unequivocally condemn the strike of iran on israel overnight, joining me now the former us Deputy Secretary of state, Wendy Sherman and retired brigadier general Steve Anderson secretary. Let me just start with you and give you a chance to respond to this israel as it potentially banning the Secretary General of the united nations from coming to israel. Obviously, tensions between the Un And Israel since the beginning of this war have been high. Its a fraught situation from unwra on down. But the Secretary General of the un, in terms of the response here of the Missile Strike on israel, basically said we absolutely need a Cease Fire condemning all partys saying dont widen the war. Israel says that is not condemning the actions of iran. Secretary sherman whats at risk here when you look at a moment like this, and Israel Willingness to come out now and do this always been a very fraught relationship between israel and united nations because israel understandably feels that the united nations has not been in support of them for many years now. And its always very difficult situation so i understand the feelings in israel. Its unfortunate because ultimately there will have to be a diplomatic solution. But i think what we are in for right now is a very severe reaction by israel. Jake sullivan at the podium yesterday, americas national Security Advisor said there would be severe consequences. The u. S. Would support israel and im very glad that President Biden, Vice President harris, seasoned leaders are in charge at the moment because the weeks and probably months ahead are going to be quite difficult and we need sober cleareyed seasoned leaders to get us through whats going to be a tough time anderson, when we talk about the leaders right now, of course, we are hearing from momeni senior level polls of the israeli government as they weigh their decision that they could strike oil refineries, that they could strike irans nuclear program itself that they could actually even go so far as to perhaps take out senior members of the iranian government sees this as a moment for regime change. Do you think that any of those things are realistic goals an absolutely. I think all of them are real lipstick. I mean, the israelis have shown they have an incredible capability. Theyve penetrated the interior leadership of the iranians. You know, with their intelligence and i think they have the ability to take out the senior leadership i dont recommend they do so. However, i do agree with Naftali Bennett and others like general Wesley Clark that there needs to be a disproportional response to this attack. This unprecedented attack on israel. I mean, were in this with them. The United States and israel, our close ally. They are fighting against authoritarian regimes just like we are and so the israelis need to build a coalition including the United States they need to continue their offensive operations in southern lebanon. But i believe that they need to take out the nuclear facilities of iran because theyre going to continue to develop these facilities. They well and the fourth Thing Id recommend is that they need to continue to they need to take out some iranian energy infrastructure. They need to take, deliver some hurt to the iranian people to put pressure on the people though hopefully over to overcome this brutal authoritarian team. That for the last 40 years has been driving this train secretary, let me just ask you in the context of this nuclear program, right . Us intelligence assesses that iran is two weeks away from getting enough nuclear material for some sort of a Nuclear Weapon. Obviously Thats Intelligence developed in concert with israel. But if youre in a moment right now and youre iran and you, and thats true. Lets assume its true and youre waiting on Israels Response, wouldnt you be rushing to get that done as quickly as possible i mean, what im getting at is are they essentially putting everybody backing themselves in a corner where the nuclear program becomes sort of a mustdo for israel because of iraq Actions Iran could take an anticipation of that very fundamental question that you asked indeed iran does. Its probably within two weeks of having enough fissile material for Nuclear Weapon, but they then have to create a weaponization of that material it has to have a delivery system. They have to put all the pieces together and the israelis and the americans of assess thats probably a year or two away and yes, this may push iran to decide which it has not done up until now that it will go for a Nuclear Weapon and that would be really an existential threat. Take thats not only to israel europe, and to all the rest of us. So this is a very concerning moment. I agree there will likely be a severe and likely disproportionate response to create escalation dominance. But we should all understand dan, that this war will get wider than it may involve the United States in ways we wish it would not. That It Nay he change Oil Prices for americans as we head towards the winter so theres a lot at stake here. And i know the United States is talking closely with israel to make sure that the response ensures Israels Security but at the same time, tries to move us toward ford a more peaceful end, which is some time all right. General Sherman Generals anderson in a second qatari sherman. Thank you so much. I appreciate both of you. Thank you sobering words there from Secretary Sherman zara we have truly thank you so much. Erin burnett live there from Tel Aviv ahead in just a few minutes, new York City mayor Eric Adam is expected to be back in Federal Court less than a week after pleading not guilty to multiple charges, including bribery and Wire Fraud. Well have that story ahead minister now in new York City mayor Eric Adams is due back in court. The mayor was indicted on a slew of charges last week. Remember, including bribery, Wire Fraud, conspiracy, and soliciting Campaign Contributions from foreign nationals hes pleaded not guilty, and now his attorney though, is trying to get at least one of the charges dismissed. Cnns Kara Scannell is outside the courtroom. The courthouse for us. Whats going to happen today . Kara kate. Were waiting because we expect the mayor to arrive any minute now to head into the courthouse for his second Court Appearance last week, he came mean he pleaded not guilty to those five criminal charges, including Bribery And Solicitation of foreign donations. Today, he will be for the judge who will oversee the trial. So this judge what kind of lay out the plans of how this is going to unfold. His lawyers have already teed up some issues. Theyre moving pretty quickly asking the judge to dismiss the bribery charge. There argument is that Airplane Upgrades to Business Class and free Hotel Rooms are not Quid Pro Quo as alleged in this case, saying theyre not even illegal bribery. Its something that politicians go and on a routine basis, they also want the judge to hold a hearing to explore whether prosecutors violated rules and leaks, secretive grand Jury Information to report borders. So theyve teed up these two issues now this all in the backdrop, the mayor still under pressure to resign. He spoke with new York GovernorKathy Hochul earlier this week, and she according to sources its urged him to clean house the mayor though says he is not going Anywhere Impact in may because i mean, actual man. And im going to continue to lead the city thats what i was elected to do. And i think the numbers are clear that i have the ability to do so. Im not worried about my Legacy Legacy is going to be strong now the other thing that were expecting his lawyers to tie up today is that theyre going to push for a speedy trial. So why . Not for the judge to set the Trial Date in this case, how soon he says that, of course, within this political calendar, the Mayors Term is up next here. Kate when they say theyre going to push for a speedy trial, is there any sense of what exactly that could look like considering all the charges hes facing well, its because youve remember Senator Bob Menendez was indicted on Bribery Charges just last september he went to trial in early summer. So that was about eight months between when he was charged and when his case went before a jury. This judge will see what kind of schedule he says, what adams is lawyers asked for and what prosecutors say, but this is something that we could see so to trial as soon as next year its great. Great that youre there. Kara are waiting right now to see if and when Eric Adams has into that courthouse, thank you so much. All right.
