We begin with breaking News Right now, Hurricane Helene is churning in the Gulf Mexico is currently a category two strength, but is expected to become a major hurricane before it slams into florida. Later tonight, officials are warning of lifethreatening Storm Surges of up to 20 feet plus new York City mayor Eric Adams indicted sources say the mayor is now facing at least one federal what criminal charge this morning, investigators took his phone and are searching his residence and later on defending a racist post. Reads the Gop Congressman Clay higgins stands by his ugly comments, Calling Haitian Migrants Thugs and Quote Slapstick gangsters Breaking News but we do begin with the breaking News Right now, a tropical storm conditions are lashing florida. It is going to get worse though as Hurricane Helene barrels toward the southeastern united states, we are seeing flooding already hours before the storm makes landfall. Cnn has reporters covering every angle at this hour want to go to gulfport and cnns Carlos Suarez, the Storm Surge there are expected to reach up to eight feet are already seeing flooding. Carlos, what can you show us jim. Good morning. So in the last hour, Emergency Officials here in Pinellas County have expressed a great deal of concern with the fact that folks that live in this part of gulfport have not evacuated and youre taking a look at the reason why this storm is still to the southwest of us and its not really going to hit us directly, but were already seeing some of the flooding associated with it, which youre taking a look at right now, is essentially some of the rain that moves in through the area overnight. And this morning, coupled with the fact that we are in High Tide and so when those two things happen, youre already starting to see some of the flooding in this part of Pinellas County. Now, just two right of me is the bay itself and the entire Morning Weve been keeping a close eye on it because it continues to creep in as High Tide makes its way in, as this storm gets closer, as you said, jim, we are expecting that Storm Surge to be anywhere between four to six feet and so Emergency Officials here in Pinellas County really hidden been trying to tell folks, you really should get to higher ground, you should move inland. In fact, that just to the east of us in Hillsborough County, which is home to tampa, there isnt a mandatory Evacuation Order that was put in Place Yesterday for folks that live in the bay area, kind of the immediate area that goes right up against the water there because is that part of the Hillsborough County is also expected to see this four to six foot Storm Surge later this afternoon and into tomorrow, jim, this is my third time in the last three years, been at this location two years ago, Storm Hit to the south. This area flooded last year, the Storm Hit to the north, and this area flooded and the Expectation Question is that tonight the same thing will happen here. Jim all right. Carlos suarez in gulfport, florida. Thank you so much, carlos. Lets go to cnns John Berman and tallahassee. John, you covered a lot of these storms. Its getting messy already yeah. Were seeing the Outer Bands right now. Its been raining for the last couple hours or so when its only going to get worse. Remarkable pictures from Carlos Suarez in gulfport where theyre seeing six feet of Storm Surge about 20 miles south of me, right along the big Bend Area of florida. They could get up to 20 feet of Storm Surge and the Weather Service calls that simply unsurvivable. The situation here in tallahassee is a little different, but also very, very dangerous. This city with a population of 200,000 storms have passed over before, but in their records, never before at full hurricane strength. And that is what is forecast to happen at least right now, the storm is moving so quickly, you wont have time to slow down when it passes over tallahassee. And that could be a real problem because this city has so many of the huge, Gorgeous Live Oak Trees the County Administrator of Leon County where tallahassee is told me a short time ago, they expect thousands of trees down, hundreds of roads closed. Its going to be quite a dangerous situation in this city, not just tonight when the Storm Hits and passes over, maybe even a direct hit on tallahassee. But for the next few days, its going to be very difficult to get around lots of power outages, very difficult even to merely get by jinn. All right. John berman, stay safe. At least one eye here, John Berman talking about 20 foot Storm Surges. It reminds me of hurricane katrina. I covered that in mississippi when the Storm Surge got around 30 feet as john was saying, if you were on the coast, you live anywhere near the beach that is unsurvivable. That coastal areas become like a Washing Machine and it just grinds up everything in its path. How bad could it get, could get like that. And some of these areas of the Big Bend of florida yes, that is what the national Hurricane Center is worried about using wording like catastrophic, unsurvivable. That is why you have to evacuate is because of the Storm Surge. Right now, we have a category two hurricane, what, 100 mile per hour winds still sitting south . Apalachicola. But again, well continue to intensify as we go through the day today. We already have tornado watches in effect for parts of the carolinas, georgia and florida, because well have some Tornado Spin up as the Outer Bands move on shore already have some Tornado Warnings near charlotte this morning. Heres a look at that Track Hurricane warnings, Apalachicola Up through town glassy, even inching into georgia where we are looking at a major lease, at least category three hurricane that can make landfall. Tropical Storm Force winds plow through georgia could cause a lot of problems even in atlanta hears that unsurvivable Storm Surge, again, up to 20 feet. That is why you need to evacuate. We also have these hurricaneforce its wins that will extend up to 400 miles out. So just lots of impacts across the southeast, jim . Yeah, very scary stuff. John carlos and elisa. Lets bring in someone who knows about hurricanes all too well, democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz of florida used to serve as the States Emergency Management director. Congressman. Good morning. How worried are you about the storm yeah. Im worried about the storm. Im worried about it from multiple fronts, jim. I mean, obviously lets start with the Storm Surge. We always like to focus on the wind, but it is the Storm Surge. It is the water that winds up killing the majority of the people. And so listen if you are in low lying area, if you are in in a Flood Zone of you are in a Mobile Home and you live along that coast where theyre predicting 15 to 20 feet of Storm Surge, please leave. Please go to a shelter. Please go to a friends house. Just please get out of Harms Way it is unsurvivable. There are pet shelters. Bring your pets. Thats mandatory in florida and so look, the state is ready we are prepared. Obviously, this is a state thats been hit. This area specifically, unfortunately, several hurricanes over the last five years, michael and a dahlia specifically i feel bad for the people of the panhandle of florida has one of the best Emergency Management departments in the country and all i ask is that the residents heed the warnings of the Florida Partner emerged amendment and the local Emergency Management directors yeah you mentioned. Hurricane michael. I mean, this is this has been happening over and over in that part of florida how does helene comparative some of these others that youve seen hit the state i mean, people might look at the Hurricane Forecast right now and say, oh, its a category two, i can ride this out. Folks need to understand this is projected to become a major hurricane. And so i mean this, this could be right up there with some of the big ones that have hit that part of the state. Yeah. Again, jim, sometimes people focus on these lines like, oh, its gonna be a strong cat two or a Week Cat three, that five or ten miles an Hour Difference Isnt going to make a difference when it comes to the Storm Surge right . So look, i did to Hurricane Michael Recovery Efforts for the state of florida. This hurricane could exceed in search, we could say a higher surge with this hurricane and even Hurricane Michael did in Mexico Beach 20 feet would be higher. And so listen, i again, i want people who live in these areas please heed the warnings. Please Pay Attention please listen again. The difference in this storm and some other storms is this is a big storm so also, even if youre not in the cone, if youre not going to be in the eye, that doesnt mean that youre not going to see tropical Storm Force winds for hundreds of miles outside of the center. So were going to have impacts all over the state. Youre seeing those impacts and Pinellas County already with flooding, youre going to see that all along up the coast into the Big Bend. And so now is the time obviously to either get out and hunker down, get your last supplies if you dont have them, the storm is going moving in pretty quickly. And obviously id be remiss if i didnt say the same thing about the residence of georgia, please Pay Attention. This is gonna be some of the strongest winds coming into georgia as its moving very quickly please heed those warnings. Please get your supplies yeah, it could be very dangerous as it heads up into the southeast, youre absolutely right. I do want to ask you about the investigation of the first Trump Assassination Attempt. While we have you right now, the Task Force youre on is holding its first hearing about what happened in butler, pennsylvania i do want to ask you, what are you hoping to hear from authorities . Well todays hearing, jim is from local Law Enforcement, and so were going to hear the perspective from the men and women on the ground who quite frankly watch the Secret Service failed, tried to warn the Secret Service on what was happening. Were going to talk about communication failures. Were going to talk about the perimeter but look, i never thought id be a pointed to an Assassination Taskforce in my first two years, let alone while serving on that taskforce, have a second Assassination Attempt of former president. This has been a bipartisan effort that is super serious you saw just the other day, a unanimous vote in the house. Unanimous vote in the senate to make sure that President Trump has the protection that he needs an attack on President Trump is an attack on all america and so we got to get to the bottom of this on a bipartisan basis, and we got to solve the problems that the Secret Service, it could be a resource issue. But i also think its a Policy And Protocol issue. And sometimes you dont know when a system is going to fail until it gets tested. And so i look forward to listening to the men and women that were on the ground that day. And i do want to play a little bit of sound from what weve heard so far, the there and get your response. This tragedy, the very real threat to democracy of our nation escaped that day i think we realized it was entirely preventable Edge Security vulnerabilities not existed. It is entirely plausible he might not even have attempted the shooting and would have returned home much trouble is the Secret Service in right now as an agency is this just a oneoff or are there systemic problems that need to be dealt with at the agency . I think as a unit, the Secret Service, i think the american people has lost faith in it thats why we want to do this Task Force and get it right, jim, to restore faith in our institution. Thats why getting information to the american people make sure were communicating with the american people on what were learning as we learn it. Its so important thats why the Task Force and the chairman is talking about that people should be able to go to a rally in this country, listen to the president ial candidate of choice, and go home. Today, we had a person killed at that rally thats not what should happen in america. And i would be remiss if i didnt Say Jim is someone who is from the City Of Parchman who graduated Margaret Stoneman douglas high school. People should be able to go to send their kids to school and have those kids home. That same day as well absolutely. Youre absolutely right about that. Gloria, what does it say . We just got the indictment just a few minutes ago. We are all reading through it, jim, but so far we see five charges. The first charge, conspiracy to commit Wire Fraud, federal Program Bribery and to receive Campaign Contributions from foreign nationals. This is what we knew federal investigators have been looking into for nearly a year now, whether or not the Eric Adams campaign in 2021 conspired with turkish nationals to funnel Campaign Donations into that 2021 campaign and that is exactly what this indictment appears to be laying out. Theres also a while here, Fraud Charge in here, solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national a charge of soliciting foreign nationals contributions, Bribery And Forfeiture allegations. Now, it is illegal for a political campaigns here the United Sates to accept donations from foreign nationals. In this case, it was turkish nationals who were donating to the mayor in the hopes of receiving favorable treatment. There is a several reporting that we have done throughout the last several months showing that there were some favors that were traded between queen a turkish officials here in new York City specifically at the turkish mission and the administration of the mayor. And that seems to be a major critical part of this indictment, which we are reading through right now 57 pages in total all laying out these accusations specifically it also looks like they are detailing information that took detailing allege activity that took place before Eric Adams even took office after his successful campaign in 2021 now we are expecting the u. S. Attorney to speak about this around 11, 30 today, he will be detailing the details that he will be talking about the indictment and announcing the charges. What what whats your take on all of this . What do you think . Yeah, jim. So i just opened up the indictment which has just been unsealed moments ago as a reporter said, its 50 some pages. This clearly isnt investigation thats been building for at least a year now, if you go back to november of 2023, thats when federal agents first started executing search warrants, seizing phones and laptops from Eric Adams himself and from people around him. Theyve continued to do that today as theyve seized one of his Cell Phones, looking at the indictment, the first thing that i see that jumps out at me is the gist of the beginning of the indictment, at least, is that Eric Adams was receiving money from foreign donors which are not allowed to do Campaign Contributions through Straw Donor meaning through people who werent the actual what donors, which usually is a thing you do when youre trying to hide or conceal the source of those donations and it looks like this chart, this indictment largely springs off of that platform that he was taking money from foreign countries or foreign entities in as far as Campaign Contributions, which in itself is illegal. And then it seems like the other charges, the Wire Fraud and the other campaign charges are basically related to that core of conduct. So were still going through this, jim, and ill tell you what im looking for. First of all, how strong does the Evidence Look . Are we going to see evidenced that theres a cooperating witness or multiple the cooperating witnesses. And second of all do they have intercepted electronic communications . Do we see specific texts and emails referred to in this indictment that may tend to implicate Eric Adams. Thats what im going to look for as i continue to go through this. Yeah. Look, i mean, we heard reports leading up to this that two his phone has been seized and there was also this reporting pertaining to a turkish consulate building. Just some do some of those details appear in this indictment . Do we think that thats what this is . That this is at the heart of the case. So two things. First of all, it does look like one of the core allegations in this diamond is that Eric Adams was receiving money from turkish interests and that that somehow had an impact on the work he did as mayor. That seems to be the core, at least of the again, the early part of the indictment, i want to put qualifications on this. Ive only read the first handful of pages. Second of all the fact that the Cell Phones had been seized throughout this investigation by the fbi, by the u. S. Attorneys office tells me that they have dug in deep to the obviously the electronic communications when i started as a prosecutor, most people didnt have Cell Phones, but now that they do, they are a jackpot of evidence. I mean, think about how much information about a person is on their cell phone, their emails, their texts, if theyre using encrypted apps sometimes their location. So these are huge sources of evidence for prosecutors doesnt surprise me at all that theyve seize them. It is a little surprising that theyre still seizing as of yesterday and today, new Cell Phones, maybe theyve just learned about them, but theres a lot of forensics here for the prosecutors to do. Absolutely. And we shouldnt note to our viewers at any moment, we expect the new York City mayor Eric Adams to speak after being indicted after this indictment has been unsealed, he has maintained his innocence so far, elie, but obviously, this embattled mayor is facing a case that weve seen Takedown Other public officials over the years i mean, you know this all too well. Federal prosecutors know how to bring this kind of a case when it pertains to public corruption yeah, jim, i can assure you this case was vetted word for word within the Attorneys Office all the way up to the u. S. Attorney, damian williams, who were going to see speak reportedly at 11 30. But i also can promise you this went down to what we call main justice. This had to go to the deputy attorney general, Lisa Monaco probably almost certainly would have had to go to the attorney general, Merrick Garland because dojs internal guidelines say, if you are going to charge a sitting public official, we need to know about it down here in dc and so i assure you its been reviewed very carefully and look, you have to be incredibly careful. This is a high highstakes case. Eric adams seems like hes dug in to fight this. He has extraordinarily talented defense lawyer, so doj usually wins. Its cases, but this was not going to be easy. No, not at all. And i mean, elie, it looks as though this is a pretty expansive case when it comes to what the federal investigators in that us Attorneys Office, what theyre looking at, there have been other officials who have been brought into this, and i want to go to Shimon Prokupecz for a few moments because hes with us as well. I mean, shimon, this is the buildup to this moment has been something to behold. I mean, a whole slew of public officials i have been mentioned in News Reports leading up to this indictment, i guess youre youre reading through it as well. What stands out to you . Shimon, are you are you with this right now or can you hear me . Shimon yeah. Im here, jim, can you hear me . Yeah, i hear you. Can you hear me . Yeah. I got you. So okay. Well, they have they are providing a lot of detail in this indictment. Its very clear that theyve laid out their case. The thing that i think adams attorneys are going to jump on is how far back this in indictment goes. Its several years back to the time when he was when Eric Adams was Borough President and was building relationships, they allege with turkish officials and using that influence, they use Dad Influence on him. They allege a more recent activity involving the turkish consulate here in new York City, and to put pressure on the Fire Department to get approvals. But i think one of the things i ive been talking to some people close to the Eric Adams legal team, and i think theyre going to take issue with how far back this goes and really how much information they have. But most of it comes from years and years ago the other thing also theyre taking a lot of issue with how heavy handed the fbi has been. Just this morning going to the official residents of the mayor Gracie Mansion at 6 00 in the morning, coming in, serving him with a summons and then taking his phones. Yet again. So i think the attorneys feel that they have a lot to work with. Here. They think this is quite frankly very personal for those of us who have been here in new York Living here and growing up here and have known Eric Adams for. A very long time you can sort of start to hear that kind of sentiment from the attorneys and from the people close to Eric Adams. But its a lengthy indictment. Theres a lot of information and then thats by design jim, they need to do that here. I mean, they have indicted and are going to be arresting the mayor of the largest city in our Country And Influence when shell person. And so they need to provide as much information as possible as to why they did this and why theyre doing it in such an aggressive and heavy handed manner. Yeah. Shimon, i mean federal investigators do not go into Gracie Mansion and execute this kind of a warrant lightly and i just wonder, i mean, what what kind of shockwaves this is going to send through the city of new york to have the mayor indicted in this fashion have other public officials in the city of swept up in this in this investigation, i assume theyre going to be relying on the testimony of some of these public officials to help convict the mayor. I mean, this is a very serious case. Yeah its a very serious case. Right . There was an allegations of foreign influence so this is something that government here as we have seen, takes very seriously. And no matter how small, no matter how large, but anytime theres any kind of foreign influence that is a major concern for the u. S. Government. What brought it to this point . Hopefully well get some more explanation on that as we read through this indictment we dont know if any other people are going to be charged in this, right . Theres No One else named in this indictment, and i think thats pretty significant. Are other people cooperating . What is the deal with that . We dont know. It does appear though that as we know, they took the mayors phones. They have a lot of Text Messages and a lot of the indictment is based on the information from these Text Messages and the mayor talking about what they allege is money for his campaign to run for mayor and also this i am struck jim, certainly by how far back the fbi has gone your how far back they are reaching to make this case to bring this indictment up. Certainly there are other investigations that are ongoing here in the city against the mayor and his staff . Was we know that all the warrants have been surged. Other warrants have been issued Theyve Issued Subpoenas for more information, also significant of course, there for people that are tied to his campaign, his Lead Campaign Finance sierra, the person that was helping him raise money. All of this started about a year ago when they raided her house in brooklyn and then days and weeks after they started taking a his phones and then they went quiet. But a lot of this information has been out there that the Turkey Connection the Fire Departments connection to the consulate, the turkish consulate, a lot of stuff, a lot of that information has been out there but its going to be interesting to see how the u. S. Attorney who is set to speak here in about an hour or so, about 30 minutes or so. Its going to be interesting to see what he has to say and what kind of questions he certainly gets.
