8085920400 Hezbollahs Leader responding to the israel coordinated attack that killed dozens of people and wounded thousands more by Detonating Pagers and walkietalkies hassan nasrallah, the head of hezbollah saying, quote crossed all red lines that thats what the attack did. The militant group now launching new strikes on Northern Israel . And americans spending trillions on Health Care more than any other high income country. But what do we have to show for it . A new report says, americans are sicker they die younger and struggled to afford essential Health Care. A harsh indictment of our medical system at what happens when your Fantasy Football Chat goes forward . Youre wrong. And what case It Led to Bomb Threats and international investigation, and federal charges were following these major developing stories and many more all coming in, right . And here to Cnn News central we begin this hour in the Middle East and this just into cnn has bla says, it has now launched at least 17 attacks into Northern Israel in a new escalation that is bringing fears of a wider war closer to a boiling point. Israels military is saying that It Hit Dozens of hezbollah targets inside of lebanon today, including infrastructure sites and a weapons storage facility. This fall is of course, days of intense threats from israel and hezbollah, the israeli Defense Minister vowing that the Terror Group will pay an increasing price while the Militia Leader Warning quote, the reckoning is coming right now lebanon is on edge after two days of attacks on wireless devices, the boobytrapped devices detonated in a series of complex explosions that killed dozens of people and injured thousands more. Lets go now to Cnn Senior International Correspondent ben wedeman. He is live for us from beirut. Ben what can you tell us about these volleying Attacks Hearing is that within the space of about 20 minutes, within the last hour more there have been more than 50 israeli airstrikes in various various targets in Southern Lebanon that after hezbollah has claimed 17 strikes on israeli targets, this definitely would indicate certainly the number of israeli strikes a decision by the Israeli Military to intensify its attacks on his butler. We know that these ready government is under increasing pressure from the population to allow the more than 62,000 israelis who fled their homes in the north of the country he to be able to return. But what we heard from hassan nasrallah, the Secretary General of hezbollah in his speech this afternoon in beirut that hezbollah will continue to target israelis. On the other side of the border and Israeli Military positions until israel stops its war in gaza. That has been his Butlers Position and essentially going back to last october significantly while that speech was being broadcast at one point israeli jets flew over beirut, central beirut, dropping flares and about a quarter of an hour later, more jets flew over breaking twice. The sound barrier. So clearly the israeli sending a message, theres much more. They can due to put pressure on hezbollah. Now, what weve seen is that the last town, tuesday and wednesdays blasts involving pagers . And Walkie Talkies have put not only the populace on edge, but also his butler itself now set conceded in his speech that the group had suffered a serious blow, and unprece with these unprecedented attacks, a blow to not only its personnel, but its security, which has clearly been compromised, compromised. Going back to late july when that Sr Hezbollah Military commander was killed in beirut. But certainly the fact that israel has been able to infiltrate hezbollahs Communications System dems is a real vote to an organization that until recently prided itself on its ability to stop israel from infiltrating its ranks brianna, certainly im ben wedeman. Thank you for that report. Live for us from lebanon. For us. Lets discuss with Cnn Analyst and columnist for the global Opinion Section of the washington posts josh rogin. Hes also the author of chaos under heaven. Trump xi and the battle for the 21st Century Josh great to see you as always. Lets start with the comments this morning from nasrallah this Hezbollah Commander talking about the reckoning will come. We know that hezbollah launched at least 17 attacks into Israel Today what do you expect that retaliation to be for these israeli strikes on the Communication Devices and then the airstrikes that weve seen since have seen in previous instances these threats of retaliation or specific enough that we can be sure there will be some retaliation, but vague enough that we dont know exactly what that retaliation would be. And moreover, were not yet at the point where we can conclude that this latest round of escalation will spill over into what hopefully neither side wants, which is an allout war that could rope in the united states and Iran And Lord knows who else. So i think that israel is leaving himself enough room to take a couple of retaliatory steps. See what happens and then make another decision. And thats why i think you see a lot of regional leaders including Secretary Of State blinken, who is in the region and the egyptians and et cetera, trying to intervene to stop this thing from spiraling out of control. And if that cant be done, if Escalation Ladder continues to proceed israel could be facing an enemy thats 100 times more powerful than hamas, which could rope in the united states and iran thats a risk that, that nobody really wants to take. But well have to wait a couple of days or a couple of weeks to see how it plays out. What do you read into that description from the idf about a complete approval of plans for the northern arena. What do you think those plans entail . Is that in itself too vague to read much into . Right. Again, i think theyre leaving themselves some room to choose actually between what certain is that israeli defense forces are refocusing on the northern theatre. Whats not certain is whether or not their intention is to escalate to deescalate. In other words, to escalate to reestablish should deterrence that will hopefully convince hezbollah to back down and return Safety And Security to Northern Israel. Thats one possible goal. The other way that they could go is a Ground Force invasion, which would be sort of how this regional war is sort of kicks off. And now we know that the u. S. Administration clean Defense Secretary Lloyd austin, are warning the israelis in public and private not to do that but when you see that comment, thats clearly what theyre threatening, whether or not theyre actually going to do it. And we just dont know i wonder josh, how you think that israels domestic politics influence this move to adjust the focus from gaza now to hezbollah in Lebanon Right . Its really interesting because on the one hand, you have huge split inside of israeli politics in Israeli Society Over Whether or not president , prime Minister Netanyahu should strike a deal soon to release the hostages and have a ceasefire in gaza or continue to fight Hamas Gaza until i guess its over and avoid that the but theres very little sort of at least from what i can tell, disagreement over the idea that the problem in the north needs to be dealt with one way or the other that the hezbollah attacks such as they are needed to be stopped. So of course, theyre related and of course, what Tiktok Blinken is saying is that if you continue to escalate in the north, then therell be nowhere no way to strike a ceasefire in the south. The problem is that its not clear if netanyahu government wants to strike a Ceasefire Deal in south anyway, and they certainly not clear that they care at all what the biden administration is saying so you dont think that this will have much of an impact these hostilities between Hezbollah And Israel on a Ceasefire Deal itself between israel and hamas no, im saying that it will surely make the Ceasefire Deal harder and but im just saying that that doesnt necessarily cut is simply inside of israeli politics is as some would like to believe, and its complicated, but theres No Doubt that the more violence there is, the farther away we are from piece that seems pretty clear that the question is, whats the way to end the war . And on that, i think nobody really has any, really good answers josh rogin, appreciate the analysis. Thanks so much. Anytime Republican House speaker Mike Johnson facing a Pressure Campaign from the leader of his own party, former president trump, pushing for a Government Shutdown on September 30, unless he gets his way on the latest Spending Bill. Cnn Washington Correspondent Sunlen Serfaty is with us now from The Hill with details on this sunlen what are lawmakers saying there . Well brianna, theyre certainly is a growing frustration that there is not a clear path that the speaker has chosen ford yet and just moments ago, Speaker Johnson and for the first time Today Talk with reporters as he made his way around Capitol Hill. And he said, im not making any Announcements Today in terms of what Path Forward he has chosen isnt he goes on to say, now we go back to the playbook and it divides another one. He mentioned, he says we have got time, well get it done. Were having thoughtful conversations, right now. But very clear that he is not chosen a Path Forward and thats whats concerning. And frustrating many members up here. He had that big defeat in the house last tonight on his Spending Bill that of course included those Voting Provisions that former President Donald Trump wanted an extended it through or early next year, that was defeated. So the big question is, what will Speaker Johnson do next . Theres a growing sense on Capitol Hill that the speaker needs to embrace a clean, continuing who knew resolution, a clean Spending Bill get through the elections, get through potentially the Holiday Season to sign another one, but leave those fights for another day after the november election. But as of now, briana, he has not chosen a Path Forward. Now, meantime, in the senate, Senate Majority Leader chuck schumer, he took some procedural steps, is afternoon to kind of put the ducks in a row should the senate me to move before the house, but thats all to say right now on Capitol Hill, Speaker Johnson again reiterated that hes not chosen a Path Forward, whether he will accept a clean, continuing resolution. Brianna all right. Sunlen. Thank you so much for that report from The Hill, im joined now by Cnns Alayna Treene and alina. We should note that its a bit of a hallmark of the former president s to influence his partys legislative agenda, even though hes out of office. Oh, absolutely. I mean, this is obviously not the first time weve seen Donald Trump you try to influence what is happening on Capitol Hill. Remember earlier this year, a lot of republicans actually were very angry with Donald Trump because he helped to sink that bipartisan Border Bill Deal that they had come up with and prevented it from happening. And now youve heard manu raja, who has been interviewing a lot of people on Capitol Hill for us hearing some molar things now from republicans as well that they are frustrated because a lot of people do not want a shutdown. And now as the sunlen walked through, i think its important to keep in mind what exactly Donald Trump is asking for. And we saw him post about that. Hes posted about a couple of times now, but yesterday just hours before that house vote, the former president went on truth social and said, republicans need to pass the Save Act every single ounce of it or not move forward with this continuing resolution. But remember, the Save Act is about having Non Keeping noncitizens from voting in elections. But that is illegal in every single state already. So a lot of people are kind of like, why is this such a big problem . And thats why youre hearing democrats push back on this effort. I think one interesting thing that ive been paying attention to is that this is actually the same issue that House Speaker Mike Johnson went to maralago for in may. He did that joint Press Conference with Donald Trump to talk about this bill. And part of that was because he recognized at the time his Speaker Gavel was on the line and thats really what a lot of this i think is coming down to Donald Trump is still such a kingmaker, not only in republican politics, but very much on Capitol Hill. And what he says is absolutely influencing their decisions the Speaker Gavel on the line again, right . Well see that. So tell us about this event. Trump is going to be speaking tonight in washington before the countrys largest pro israel conference. Yes. You actually had two events. One is going to be a little bit earlier where he is sitting down with gop megadonor, miriam adelson, and then later hes going to be addressing the israel, american conference, as you mentioned, the largest kind of gathering of these pro, israel supporters and a lot of this is him trying to core disaffected jewish americans, especially ahead of november, particularly those who are not exactly happy with the way that the biden administration has been handling the war between israel and hamas. Now i do want to note that of course Donald Trump often refers to himself as the most pro israel president that they have had in they are in recent american history. But at the same time, we also know that hes made a lot of disparaging remarks about jewish americans. Many that people have argued are antisemitic. He said that people arent exactly jewish if theyre voting for democrats, things like that. So i think its important to keep that in context when we hear from Donald Trump this evening, but this is definitely a move by him and his campaign to kind of pull as many voters in that camp as they can, as they look forward to November 5 Alayna Treene. Thank you so much for that. Still ahead. A new report finds that even though americans spend more on Health Care than any other high income country, americans are sicker, they die younger and many cant afford basic Health Care. Now the study compared the ten richest nations and rank the united states last on access to care, Life Expectancy rates of Death And Disease and experiencing the most avoidable deaths all of the nine other countries have universal health coverage. And the best Health Care came in australia, the netherlands, and the uk. While the u. S. Again, came in tenth here to discuss primary Care Physician and Public Health specialist, dr. Saju mathew and dr. Chris t. Pernell as well, director of the Naacp Center for Health Equity and a region at large for the american college of preventative medicine. Thank you both for being with us. Dr. Mathew, based on what youve seen as a primary Care Physician, do you agree with the findings of this report boris, we are the richest country in the world as you just mentioned there. But we have the poorest outcomes and that is absolutely true we spent all this money, we pay more, but we get less and theres so many different reasons for this. But ultimately, its also what you mentioned in the opening. We dont have a universal Health Care policy and i tell you when i talked to patients and other doctors, most people agree that we do need some type of a universal Health Care. The problem is how do you pay for it . And that is where we get lost in conversation after conversation. And ultimately what happens is if you are rich, if you have a good Health Care plan youre probably good to go, especially if youre healthy. One of the biggest problem says Health Care inequity, where minority populations are affected the most with Decrease Access to Health Care and using the system more at the very end when they are really sick versus when they are healthier. So dr. Pernell, what are the things that people are experiencing on just a Day Today Basis that would be supported by this report like it talks about access to care. Is it access to specialists . Is it access to Primary Care . And these avoidable deaths, can you tell us a little bit about some of the findings there yes. Brianna, on an average day across the united states, what we see is that far too many americans experienced a tale of two americas. And what i mean by that . As you have certain populations in groups that disproportionately dont have primary Care Physicians. A fellow available, they dont have Health Insurance to have access to those primary Care Physicians when they do have Health Insurance, it may they may be under insured or theyre using their Emergency Room for issue jews that would be better served in an outpatient setting. And then finally, you have a host of social conditions. Are those social determinants of health as we define them, that are impressing upon their health outcomes. And theyre living sicker and theyre dying sooner. And Bottom Line, this is the Equity Disaster so what lessons can be learned, dr. Pernell from the report . What do you see as the solution . How can it be improved its not just how much money you invest, but its what you invest the money in. The united states, we spend over 16 of our gdp on our health system. And does that show up and things like Quality And Safety or even in clinical preventive services . Yes, it does, but it does not impact people across the diversity of zip codes, across the diversity of communities so we need to invest in our pipelines to provide more physicians from diverse and inclusive backgrounds, we need to assure universal Health Care and we need to look at the environmental or the social conditions in which people are living and thriving i think thats the thing to dr. Mathew. People feel like theyre getting fleeced just to get care in order to have a decent outcome. And i wonder what you see in the long term for people healthwise and financially, when thats the case dont brianna, the Bottom Line is if you look at our culture, this system is basically set up where people say you take care of your Health Care. I will take care of mine. And its almost like a individual responsibility to see Health Care. And thats really one of the bigger problems is that we dont have again, is a universal where were all in this together. Thats one of the biggest problems. Also, high administrative costs. I see about 20 patients a day and i can tell you the number of times that minders has to be on the phone trying to get this very cost please expensive medications paid for even medications like ozempic and wegovy. Theyre extremely expensive. Youve got to get a prior authorization. Thats also the problem. And then ultimately as dr. Pronounce mentioned, we need to create an incentive for doctors like me to want to go into Primary Care. Most medical students are picking Primary Care. They are picking their for ology, cardiology and ultimately, if you spend more money in preventive care we can prevent a Heart Attack from happening before they have to go in and see a Cardiologist And Doctor pernell, there was one area where the united states ranked fairly highly and that was the care process. What exactly does that mean . Good point, boris. So again, that drills down on issues around quality in the united states, we put a fair amount of investments around valuebased Care Incentivizing physicians and providers to do those things that will keep people healthy before disease sets then or before disease worsens. And theres a fair amount of investment around safety, knowing how best to take care of people for say, for instance, when theyre in a hospital to prevent infection. So while that is a bright spot, i cannot underscore the reason that we can perform well in that area, but bottom out amongst all of our peers is because we dont make the right comprehensive investments. And those investments will not just be in our Health Care systems, but in our social settings as well. Dr. Pernell, dr. Mathew, appreciate you both. And this is cnn mans feud with fellow Fantasy Football player has now become a federal case. Twentyfiveyearold Mac Gabriel pleaded guilty to two counts of interstate and foreign communication of a threat to injure admitting that he called in a fake threats to go after someone had a disagreement with in his Fantasy Football league whats more, it looks like gabriel just could not let it go, calling in phony tips even after he knew that the fed rhonda him Cnn Justice Correspondent Jessica Schneider is here just federal prosecutors say that this Fantasy Football, our Cause Law Enforcement to be diverted obviously from real investigation. And thats because they say that he called in these fake tips not once, but twice internationally, once in norway, once here in the u. S and it was all because of this beef he had with a fellow player in his Fantasy Football league. So apparently they had some sort of disagree and then this 25yearold pennsylvania man, Matthew Gabriel, he thought it would be a good idea in August 2023 to send out an alert in norway to the norway norwegian Police Security Service claiming that this man, yet a feud with online, was going to conduct a mass shooting. And this is how he put it in the alert to the norwegian authorities. He said on august 15, a man named blank redacted. Is headed around oslo and has a Shooting Plan with multiple people on his side involved. They plan to take as many as they can add a Count Concert and then head to a department store. I dont know any more people than that. I just cant have random people dying on my conscience. Now as you can imagine, once nor norwegian police got that tip, they worked with us authorities, conducted hundreds of Hours Worth of investigation over five days the fbi actually then enter reviewed Matthew Gabriel later charging him, and then it was months later where he apparently, according to authorities, did it yet again this time in the u. S sending alert to the University Of Iowa and he said that there was gonna be some sort of incident at the university knowing that thats where his rival went to school. Now this man, 25yearsold, he has pleaded guilty to these two charges. And the u. S. Attorney in pennsylvania, who her office brought this case issued pretty poignant statement here. This is from the eastern district of pennsylvania, Jacqueline Romero writing this while already being prosecuted for one Hoax Threats spurred by of all things, his Fantasy Football league Matthew Gabriel inexplicably decided to send another. His actions were extremely disruptive and consume significant Law Enforcement resources on two continents, diverting them from actual incidents, investigations. And then she warns Hoax Threats arent a joke or protected speech. They are a crime. My advice to keyboard warriors, youd like to avoid federal charges. Always think of the potential consequences before you hit post or sent a big lesson for this one man in particular, yeah. Do we know what was at the roots of this beef . And where is Matt Gabriel now . So they just had some sort of online disagreement on a chat that somehow resulted in escalated to this. Matthew gabriel. Hes been under investigation for quite some time because this first threat was way back in August 2023. Hes hes now been charged. He faces those two counts. He was released on 25,000 bond and he will be sentenced this coming january and he does face up to five years in prison. So like the u. S. If Kamala Harris does not win, it wont be because black woman did not do their jobs. So thats where the energy is. And thats where the mindset is. But when, when we talk about tangibles of whats different print here with a Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket. Weve seen a couple of things like Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Historically Black Sorority Vice President harris is a Member Theyve for the very first time recently launched their own political pac allowing them to inject themselves in politics, endorse and fundraise for Candidates Delta Sigma theta, another black female centered organization, black sorority they are running Tv Ads in Battleground State for the very first time, were seeing that sort of thing. And then tonights event that weve been talking about with Oprah Winfrey that was organized by the wind with black women organization. You remember them . They did that Zoom Call they say some 90,000 black women tuned in. This was just hours after president Joe Biden said it was dropping out of the race. So this Event Tonight is an offshoot of that Zoom Call, but that is what were talking about here as far as how these black women are organizing, but what they all tell me is weve been doing this for decades this is not new to us, but what they are saying is new is that the nation is paying attention to what preparation, meeting this very specific historic moment, what it looks like, and this is what it looks like. What are the issues motivating them . What did they share with you . They are concerned about everything from reproductive rights to the economy those are gun control. All the issues that impacts their daily lives, their communities, and their families. So yes, theyre excited yes, they understand that historic nature of this race, but whats driving them at their core are these issues. And i would love to Quote One of the women who i spoke to. She says, black women have been carrying the Democratic Party over the Finish Line Decade after decade but whats good here and what sweet this time around is we get the best of both worlds with a woman who deeply understands our struggles. So theres this sense that within the issues that they care about, they trust how a black woman will handle an address those issues yes. Really interesting reporting, rene, thank you so much for your work on this and for sharing it with us. Thank you still ahead. Oceans are warming at an alarming and unprecedented rate and its having an impact on everything from extreme weather to the marine species strike im going to survive, including Coral Reefs, coral in the Florida Keys suffered a massive Bleaching Event last year, and now scientists have just said hundreds of dangerous see corals from South Florida to the Texas Gulf Coast as part of a Research And Restoration project. Were joined now by one of those involved keisha bars shes the chair for Coral Reef and ocean health. And texas a m university, Corpus Christi. Thank you so much for being with us. Walk us through how this coral was moved and what happens next to be with you all will the process of moving these girls is not simple because theyre extremely fragile. Organisms and they cant handle a very extreme fluctuations in temperature in order to do that, we need to carefully package how we transport the corals. So we ended visually package each of these corals into containers. They give me tupperware containers or individual plastic bags that you can think about when you bring it home from the pet store. So weve put the corals in there, though that would clean seawater and air, put it inside of a Cell Phone insulated box and then we moved it from Nova Southeastern University in Florida And Fort lauderdale, put it on our University Plane where i flew to fort lauderdale, loaded it in the plane and brought it here to Corpus Christi where we unloaded them with the texas heat aquarium, took them in a in an ambulance to the Rescue Center where they will stay for a little bit of time before they come to my lab here at the Hart Research Institute at texas a m, Corpus Christi okay. Then what do you do . Then . Then how do you manage to preserve them and what are the challenges . Yeah. Corals are extremely simple by complicated organisms. I liked to joke that im kind of like a coral because girls dont like it too high and they dont like it too cold they are just very fragile and what the temperature can be and we have to be extremely careful when we take care of them because they have these very narrow thermal temperatures. So when we have them in aquariums and why were partnering with the Texas State Aquarium is we need to make sure that the conditions that we have the queria at our maintained in these very narrow windows that are optimal for corals to grow at. So were able to work with the aquarium here and be able to maintain those temperatures for the corals and have certain levels of the temperatures the ph of the water, and of course, the nutrients of the water to be able to grow the corals here and make sure that theyre thriving in the waters that we have here. And its not getting too hot. So we can continue to grow them and make sure that theyre healthy. Environment here in texas what are some of the risks associated with going into a marine ecosystem and removing Life Forms from and i imagined that its been really challenging, but that there might the some risk involved to yeah, of course. I think one of the challenging things that might sound like, well, were removing these organisms from this environment, why exactly are we doing that with the primary reason behind doing this work is we were collecting some of these coral to do some experiments to understand. If we were to do dredging activities to have more ports or any kind of coastal development we want to know what kind of impacts thats going to have on corals. And thats what the research that we do here in my lab. We want to have better informed decisions of how what we do here on land and packs are corals so that we can make informed decisions about how to the dea more responsible here on land. So this is part of the reason why we used to get corals from this areas so that we can make sure that the work that youre doing is actually relatable to the area where this work is intended to happen. The second reason why we wanted to remove these corals from some of the nurseries that are In Florida is these nurseries that our house by Nova Southeastern University is outplanted to be able to have this critically endangered species of coral known as the Staghorn Coral theyre trying to grow them out and more of this coral because it is depleting and its, its unfortunately dying because the waters are getting so warm were trying to grow them so that theres more of them available when the water gets cooler unfortunately, as you just mentioned, the water is getting really, really warm right now. This is a really great opportunity for us to take some of that coral remove it from the environment, and move it somewhere where the water wasnt warm, so we could save those corals from potentially bleaching and dying at the same time. And the last thing that we did was when we think about our waters, there is some debris thats in the water, whether its tires, are old peers are other structures. Some of that needs to be removed and sometimes cruel, settle and grow on. That is we want to remove that structures from the water. The coral also needs to be removed and that call needs to have a home. And we would like to have that coral to have a home. And when the folks at nova southeastern said well, we need to find homes for this coral. I said, can we please take those calls and provide a home for that because we wanted to be able to make sure that those girls had somewhere to go it is really fascinating work and important too in ocean conservation, kishor bar, we appreciate shoot you joining us of course.
