Its notable, jim, weve seen the Attorney General respond to these attacks and congressional hearing springs one questioned by lawmakers, may be in response to questions from the press, but he is going to be making a full throated defense of his employees. Doj officials fbi agents in this really notable speech, hes going to be delivering it around 11, 30 this morning to his employees, two u. S. Attorneys who are in town and its real really incredible. You know, we say we wont let this department be used as a political weapon while he doesnt mention Donald Trump or his allies by name, it is very clear, even in reading the excerpts that weve been given, that Merrick Garland is sending a trump and his allies, we dont appreciate these attacks. We wont tolerate these tax and employees of the Justice Department, the Attorney General will say, i have your back, in particular, Merrick Garland will say this to the employees. It is dangerous to target and intimidate individual employees of this departments simply for doing their jobs. And it is outrageous that you have to face these unfounded attacks because you are doing what is right and uphold link the rule of law. I mean, in the past few years, there has been a spike in threats against doj officials. Also in particular, fbi agents in the wake of that search of mar alago two years ago, they faced a number of threats. So this is the Attorney General really, for the first time speaking out in this forum in such a forceful speech that is directed to his employees, letting them know, he backs them and he wont stand for. And jessica, whats remarkable about this, we saw at the debate a couple of nights ago, Donald Trump accusing the Biden Harris Administration of using the Justice Department as a weapon, the weaponization of the Justice Department as some on the right, call it up on Capitol Hill, but at the same time, trump just this past weekend on truth social was putting out a post saying hes going to go hes going to go after Election Officials. Hes going to go after democratic donors if he feels that they are cheating in the upcoming election, which of course they wont be. But its these kinds of attacks. I think that Merrick Garland feels compelled to speak out again right . The rhetoric is twofold from Donald Trump. Hes, hes accusing the biden administration, the doj, of using their force for political gain, which Merrick Garland has repeatedly said is not true. And then like you said threatening to do things to his political opponents, to Election Officials Merrick Garland addresses that. He says it is, it is dangerous to target the employees for simply doing their jobs. He said, i also have seen you bravely carry on in the face of an unprecedented spike in threats targeting a range of public officials. So hes commending his employees for even continuing on Jack Smith and his prosecutors, Donald Trump repeats them for attacks them. What seems to be on a, on a daily basis. So this is Merrick Garland coming to the defense of his own employees, but also sending a message to Donald Trump and his allies, very interesting. Our Jessica Schneider, well be following that. What is your your take on what Jessica Schneider just reported a few moments ago that the Attorney General Merrick Garland is going to send an urgent message to department of justice officials that he has their back and that this talk of a weaponized department of justice is just nonsense. Obviously, hes talking about Donald Trump, even if the Attorney General is not going to mention it and by name, whats your reaction to that i think its a very important step. I mean, we have a president here who is Number One trying to scare the american people and arrowed their confidence in our institutions our country was added to a list few years go back slightly democracy is what was one of the top reasons that we have leaders like Donald Trump, who are intentionally trying to erode public trust in our systems. And the doj is part of that. So its unfortunate that hes really he is trying to weaponize Public Opinion against our own governments. I think its a good step that the Attorney General has taken love to see the doj again, become more aggressive in the way there theyre talking about this issue and any other ones as well and i do want to ask you about whats going on down in florida. I know that you and other florida democrats In The House are sending a letter to the Justice Department calling for an investigation it should into a governor Ron Desantis down there, are a lot of this stemming from what has been going on with amendment for which is a Ballot Amendment thats going to be Coming Up this election. Can you explain that for us . Yeah my my colleagues and i lead with debbie wasserman, Wasserman Schultz in South Florida are sending a letter to the doj requesting that they look into an investigate something really serious thats going on in the state of florida, as many people know this year where were going to have amendment four on the ballot to Codify Abortion Rights its really important. And that i believe will pass and the state of florida, the governor opposes it because hes against bodily Autonomy And Freedom for all women, childbearing adults in the state of florida and the governor unfortunately, is using official State Government resources to fight back and campaign against amendment four not only is he using official Government Resources to campaign against amendment for you using Government Resources to what looks like sabotage and really suppress the vote. There have been reports that official State Government officials have gone to supervisor of elections offices, requested to see loads and loads as were talking thousands of petitions. They are scanning the petitions and checking them for fraud, then sending State Law Enforcement agents to go to the homes of people who signed these petitions to tell them that they might have been the victim of fraud asserting that somehow there you know, their name was forged in the petition which is completely false. Each supervisor of elections does this process already. They go through they verify the petitions. It was verified that is why amendment four will be on the ballot. Not only that, but the governor it seems has directed our State Healthcare Administration agency to put out Number One, a video working against amendment four, and that a whole page on the official Government Website talking about and campaigning against amendment four. And the message to the governor is this Number One, we believe this is an improper it is not normal and it might even be illegal. But if he wants to campaign against him im in for it to start a political Action Committee to go ahead and do that and not used State Resources against something that is going to be a by partisan vote across the state of florida yeah. And its a vote that could put the state of florida in play on the president ial level and with the Senate Race that is going to be hotly contested in florida. No question about and congressman, while i have you, i do want to switch gear to the republican led attacks on haitian immigrants in ohio theres one moment of the president ial debate, obviously that went viral from Donald Trump. Lets listen to that and talk about on the other side theyre eating the dogs, the people that came in, theyre eating the cats. Theyre eating, theyre eating the pets of the people that live there seemed people until let me just say, this is the people on television cleared my dog was taken used for food this of course, has been completely debunked by officials in springfield, ohio. But congressman, i do want to ask you about this because you represent one of the largest haitian communities in the united states i believe you are also a patient ancestry, correct me if im wrong about that. First of all, but the video did not show and that is the initial interaction between the first officer and mr. Hill after the stop was made mr. Hill originally he said he was cooperative, he was not even really confrontational. The officer asked him to roll down as window. Why is that important . I mean, he had darkly tenant windows for Officer Safety purposes. You need to be able to see inside and see whats going on mean it a traffic stop. You never know what you have. Now, having said that the actions of the first officer, i didnt have a problem with it was the second officer to one with the black sleeves underneath his shirt. He was aggressive from the very start when he was ordered when you ordered mr. Hill out of the car, they didnt even give them a chance to get out of the car on his own. He just yanked him out of the car, putting facedown on the ground, handcuffed him and then the last thing once he standing up and hes handcuffed, youve got three at least three cops there. There was no need to put him down on the curb, although in some jurisdictions, i guess thats procedure, but he forcibly took him down to the curb. I didnt see a need for that. So i think both sides could handle things a lot better. Yeah joey, i want to play a little bit more of what hill had to say about the incidents. Lets talk about this on the other side i could have been better. I couldnt let down my window in that incident. Im human. I got to i got to follow rules. I got to everyone else would do so now, does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out to me absolutely not. Yeah. I mean, joey, that was my reaction to this, you know. Okay. Hes not rolling the window down. Not how youre supposed to do it if the officer i should roll the window down your roll the window down. But, you know, the officer could have been more patient to and just said, okay, maybe you cant why did why i assume every situation is a bad situation. But what whats your response to me . Jim, its about interpersonal communication. You know, my dad who was a Police Officer, may he rest in peace . Always used to tell me that of all the tools he had at his disposal. And there were a lot of them including a nightstick, et cetera. The most effective tool was his Voice Ability to treat people with courtesy, with professionalism, with respect and yes, you know sometimes they are going to be a very noncompliant public. The question then becomes, is porsche analogy, if someones noncompliant, does that automatically give you the right to lay hands on them to escalate the matter, we depend upon our officers to bring Reason And Judgment and good Common Sense to any situation. Let me say this. A lot of officers out here, the vast majority serving with dignity, we really owe them a debt of gratitude for all they do. But when you have others who are so quick to escalate, so quick to make something turn into something so bad that doesnt need to be that is concerning and so that is what i think we need to focus last point, jim, and thats this. I think its a teachable moment, right . If it were not him being Tyre Kill where would we be would it be a lot worse than this . And thats what concerns me. So if we could use this to continue the bridge that gap, then were in a more effective place and at the end of the day, thats the Teaching Tool in situation and chief ramsey, would you fire this officer well, first of all, i dont know if its complete history and ive made a lot of decisions around discipline. You have to look at the past record. It is a 27 Year Veteran. Im sure hes got a history either complimentary or disciplinary one or the other . I think there should be some disciplinary action taken against him, whether it rises to the level of termination or not. Im not really certain. I would need to have more information, but let me just agree with something that joe we sit where youre taught Me Academy with deescalation, even if you have a confrontational person, somebody has to be the adult in the room, so to speak. In other words, your job is to deescalate best you can to try to get the situation under control thats second officer made no attempt to deescalate yankee Mountain Part away. He did and so forth. So he took a situation that could have been resolved a lot differently, get the Guy And Ticket and on your way joe, what do you think . Very quickly no, i i do agree with that. I think what happens next is in terms of discipline is therell be a disciplinary proceeding and at that hearing, right. Hes entitled to his due process. Youre going to have people like chief ramsey who ultimately make the call and that coal will be predicated upon his actions, his responses his level of intervention, and what he did in this situation. And was it uncalled for and inappropriate . I dont care if youre a 45 Year Veteran that gives you no right to do anything other than your job, which is about again, courtesy, professionalism, and respect. And i think thats what has to be assessed. And if he transcended the bounds and i think discipline is appropriate and it sends the right message to the community that we hear you. We respect you, and ultimately were going to address things that should not be what they are yes. He plainly admirers and he sees them having great success and taking over institutions. And he wants to replicate and recreate that success on the Conservative Movement. We know that it this is another one of them and we were not seeing were not seeing non citizens participating in our elections at any state and high rates, we when we see someone whos not eligible to vote for any reason registered to vote, we remove them from the rolls and we work within the confines of the law to do that. And also make the case that when these unsubstantiated claims have noncitizens voting proliferate, it harms not just the Publics Faith in our elections, but it translates into threats to Election Workers some selves and they need to know that before this segment, you and i were chatting about this. And thats not going to work with me. And many of us we are committed to doing our jobs and when we get threats like these one no, the integrity of our work, it sound we know the truth and the law is on our side. And so were not going to back down. Were going to continue to refuse to be intimidated and doubledown on our efforts to make sure every citizen, no matter who they are, who they vote for, is able to vote and have confidence in our elections and secretary benson, i do want to have you relate to the viewers of you can some of what youve had to go through because i know you personally have had to deal with threats and intimidation over the last several years and its not just threats over Social Media or voicemails or Phone Calls its people showing up at my home. It is a reminder of what were up against and how low people will be willing to go in response to some of the false rhetoric that theyre hearing. And again i think everyone needs to realize those consequences of these words right now, theres a direct line from the hateful rhetoric to potential violent threats against not just me, but, you know, Election Workers, clerks who dont necessarily want to step into the fray, but well do so if it means protecting our elections but they dont deserve to be harmed or threatened or for afraid for simply doing that very patriotic work. And what do you do on Election Night if theyre people showing up at Election Counting centers, Vote Vote Counting centers at Poll Sites trying to intimidate people. What, what happens or are you planning for that or for that, yeah. I mean, first, we are planning for that. I think thats what were doing right now. We tried to mitigate the harm he tried to deter. Weve passed laws in michigan to make it a crime to threaten an election official, for example, in their line of Work Weve put more protections in place, built partnerships with Law Enforcement, and have actually done Scenario Planning with local launch of course, went and first responders to be prepared for every contingency.
