No motive is known, but officials have ruled out Road Road Rage and they say the attack was a quote, planned event cnns Gloria Pazmino is joining us right now. Shes working the story. Gloria, the suspects car, as well as a gun believed to have been used in the shooting, have now been found, were told what what else can you tell us . Yeah. Well, event and those two pieces of evidence are key. Schools have been canceled for today and Law Enforcement has a message for the suspect telling him that theyre out there looking for him and that they will not rest until they lay hands on him tick listen the rain at exit 49 or we believe the shots had come from very unforgiving terrain, not a safe place to put people in the dark searching for an needle in a haystack. Well, my message would be, you that we would ask that he would give himself up and were not willing to quit until we do lay hands on well, Law Enforcement asking this community to keep their doors locked to remain vigilant, and to report anything suspicious that they see officers have said that they are chasing down every possible lead. Its not cleared to them yet whether or not the suspect is still alive, they are focused on this one area, but they have also said that it is entirely possible that he has left the area and is elsewhere by now both very scary stuff. Indeed, gloria, five people as you know, were wounded in this shooting. Whats the latest . On their injuries . Yet . Well, if weve heard from two people who were who were present during the shooting. One of them sustained Gunshot Injuries to her arm. Dianne, you just laid out all of the issues going on in North Carolina for cnns one Thing Podcast its very strong. This delay is three days and counting now, but attorneys for the state Elections Board say this has thrown the Vote Voting Process into chaos. Explain how this could delay, this delay could be so problematic so wolf, were in a little bit of a legal limbo period here in North Carolina. Usually what you and i would be doing right now is actually talking about the first ballots that have been cast in the 2024 election. Accounting it was up. Instead, not a single one has been sent out and the truth is, were not sure when they will be the State Board of elections is appealing that court of Appeals Order to remove Kennedys Name from the ballot. Theyve appealed to the state supreme court. But in the meantime, they have to comply with that order. So the staff spent the weekend beginning to Reprocess Coding new ones without rfk Juniors Name on it. Do they say that it could take up to 13 days to recode reprep, and reprint all of those ballots across the state. One County Official told me it is effectively starting all over from the beginning they all have to go out at the same time to ensure fairness. And its a tall task according to the State Board, there are 2,348 ballots styles across North Carolina and more than 2. 9 million had already been printed before the court of Appeals Order came down. And of course, all of this, the cost falls on the countys themselves, the board estimates that its going to cause more than million dollars to redo everything. And while theyve already blown past that September 6 date deadline, what theyre really concerned about wolf is september 21, because the board has says that thats the federal you aqaba deadline. Thats those military and overseas ballots. Theyve got to send them out by september 21, theyre not sure if theyre going to be able to do that. If they have to redo everything of course, this comes as Mailin Balloting was already going to be a little bit more difficult for voters in North Carolina because of new requirements that they had. Anyone can vote by mail. But now you have to have to witness signatures or one Notary Public thats an older rule, but its a change from the 20th 20 Pandemic Election rules that they had with just one witness. They also have to show i. D. Not just at the polls for the first time, but a photocopy of an approved id with that Absentee Ballot must be included. And theres a timeframe change there used to be a Threeday Grace Period as long as it was postmarked before, are on Election Shan that is now gone thanks to a new election law, they have to have it in by 7 30 p. M. On Election Day or the ballot will not count. You couple that with the delay in getting them out, and were looking at a shortened timeframe for people who are Voting Absentee by mail here very interesting, North Carolina, dianne is not the only state implement some new restrictions to make it harder to vote. What are you seeing nationwide well first off, with the exception of a few states out there, if the last time you voted was the 2020 president ial election, and look for a lot of people out there thats probably true things have changed part of that is its twofold. Part of it is those Election Pandemic rules that were in place during 2020. A lot of those are gone the other, part is State Legislatures had been busy 2021 and 2023. Were both unprecedented years when it came to the number of Voting Laws that were enacted weve covered them together over the past four years. There were several states, including some Swing States that have made voting easier or at least more accessible like michigan for example, but more frequently, weve been tracking the opposite and we have talked about some of these Voting Election Overhaul bills over the past few years in states like texas and florida, iowa, North Carolina, and in georgia so many people are going to see differences to Absentee Ballots, voting early changes in registration requirements, empowering of those partisan Poll Workers but you know what else were going to see are these changes that dont impact the process of voting. But the outcome, it could even cause chaos on the backend like this excellent reporting from our colleague sara murray, nick valencia, theyve been following the state Elections Board down in georgia. Of course, another Swing State where three republicans on that Fivemember Border Sort of pushing through these new rules. At the last minute that many Voting Rights Groups and election officials are worrying could jeopardize Election Certification in that state. So its sort of on all fronts beforehand while people are voting. And even what happens afterward that weve seen change from that drastically different election in 2020, wolf. And the key is making sure that people know what theyre getting into before they actually go to vote. So many political parties and campaigns talk about making a plan. Hes not talking about all the various issues that actually affect americans is the sit around the Kitchen Table thinking about how to structure their lives and how government can or cant help. Hes talking about himself. Hes talking about his grievances. When you presented in those kinds of stark terms, people begin to understand what this election is all about. Theres a new poll out. Im sure you saw it lams that voters think trump is more centrist, than Kamala Harris, despite his continued lies as falsehoods and all these charges that hes lovely well, i think thats not the only thing that in that poll that hes not just centrist, hes viewed as a Change Agent in that poll. I mean, if you look at hes beating her by double digits also on the economy and theres a lot of Warning Signs in there for Kamala Harris i, think Tomorrow Night its going to be more and more about Kamala Harris. Again, everybody knows Donald Trump. They knows what, they know what comes with him. The good and the bad and all that said, if you look at that poll, it also says voters just dont know a lot about her and i think she has a heavy lift because shes trying to walk this Fine Line A versus the leftwing person that shes been in the progressive policies that shes pushed to the overthe majority of her career versus now trying to position her self as a moderate. So Donald Trump really has to call her out for that Tomorrow Night. Im sure he will. Julie, the poll also says that voters view trump as a riskier candidates. And Kamala Harris. But that number is way down from 2016, which was of course before the insurrection on january 6, how do you explain that . Thank peoples memories are shot. Look, in the same way that george bushs numbers have gone up since the Iraq War and since he left office is the same way that effectively trumps numbers have gone up. And so we know out of sight, out of mind to some extent, people begin to have rosy ideas about you Kamala Harris has job and its a tough one tomorrow is to not just talk about her own record because she does need to introduce yourself to the nation. I have asked if that means that all her Treatments Rover issued cancerfree they wont confirm whether or not there are other treatments ongoing. First of all, its the hot temperatures, three digit temperatures, and even lows in the 80s, it makes firefighters just fatigued and tired and its hard to deal with physically. Then you have the possibility of those thunderstorms were expecting more later this afternoon and yes, you may get some rain from that, but the problem is theres also lightning that starts new fires. And then you also have the wind that comes with these storms and it blows the flames in directions that the firefighters are not able to predict. So they told us, we dont really know where to place the crews because we dont know where the fire could spread. So what theyre doing is placing those crews near the homes in this area that they believe are threatened. And what happens then is that theyre doing everything they can to protect the homes. And so far theyve been able to do that. No homes have been destroyed yet by this fire. So the destruction is really here in the national forest. Theyre working around the clock. You see them going up and down these are crews that are essentially just going and going and going with that stopping. And so again, some optimism, but still some concern from calfire. Take a listen to what they told me each night is going to get cooler and easier for our crews, get in there and get some containment. We still have the threat of thunderstorms this afternoon so we still have to maintain our situational awareness for that. We have not only the fuels and the steep topography and the heat to deal with, we have thunderstorms. So again, were just really prepared and they want people to be prepared as well. Thousands are under Evacuation Warnings or orders and the people that are under those warnings are being told to be ready to pack their bags and be ready to leave at a moments notice because that can happen and they want people to be able to lead before firefighters needs to get into these areas so that it makes it easier for them.
