No, house thaT First next question what Trump Be trump, which is what they say because they have no choice, like thats fine in these sort of out months. So in pennsylvania, they go put a website to help people vote by mail, which republicans used to actually itd be very good at trump comes out in pennsylvania and says, well, we dont like mail voting, even though a couple of weeks ago he said that we should male votebymail, and now hes back to where he was in 2020 across the country, theyre trying to get volunteers out to get People To vote. And then trump on the stage talks about what Section Integrity trying to make it a harder to vote. He is, campaign is like, lets talk about policies. Lets not be say things that are going to get you off your track. Trump takes a vote. He says, whats have a free poll here about whether people want personal attacks or whether they want policies. You can guess how that turned out mean the Harris Campaign is more than happy for him to make try to make this a race about personality. Yeah, they want that they wanted to be a race about personality because they believed that the vice President S character is much stronger than she presents herself more president ial, less chaotic than the former president does. So theyre happy to talk about personal attacks against the Vice President. I mean, obviously, we saw in Danas Interview that she didnt want to talk about the racial attacks that hes made against her, but shes happy to talk about her own personality versus his because when theyre talking about personality, they are not talking about things that the Harris Campaign knows that harris is vulnerable on, and they are trying to go on the offensive, namely immigration in the economy. And so theyre happy to get into these personal conversations where theyre talking about heard temperament versus the former presence because they believe that the american people will see a major contrast. And that is what their Campaign Strategy is about showing the contrast not just on policy, but also about personal politics for a long time in this race, iT Felt like the Biden Campaign was the one not looking at the kind of fundamental electoral issue they had and now feels To Me like the Trump Campaign since the switch in this race has not been able to see the glaring inability for them to land some of these attacks to cut through noise. The fact that they have a candidate who Cannot Stay focused on substance cannot execute their strategy, have a vice, has a Running Mate that has consistently falling in terms of favorability the rating, and i think that it exposes the what has been true for a year or so was that Donald Trump has not been able to grow his Vote Share among the american public. Hes really dealing with the same consolidated group. And now that has been show now, He Has a canyon on the other side, has a higher ceiling. Its looking a lot more flimsy than i think it used to. And so its onus is on trump coming in into this debate to reverse the momentum of this campaign, we are certainly still in a deadlocked race. Yes, no clear leader. But the upside of where harris is is clearly higher from where the Trend Line of where the republicans are. And it is Up To the candidates to change it. And i think we have a lot of evidence now to be skeptical of, is this the same Donald Trump of four years ago, of eight years ago, we havent seen them put that together and just when you think the Gender Gap Cant possibly get worse, the former president , j. D. Vance raises his hand and keep saying things thaT Further alienates women. You have donald, you mentioned the Donald Trump abortion politics of last week that also cant possibly help whats going on. Hes trying hes trying to mitigate some some of the damage that has happened throughout the year. And yet hes finding a way still to make it work. Lets talk about the abortion. Pause before you jump in. Mike just about how He Has gone from nick pointed three Supreme Court justices overturn roe v. Wade. Then there are questions about it. He as a florida resident, good vote on affirming Abortion Rights as part of a Ballot Referendum in november, and hes been a little bit, shall we say, all over the map would your veto a federal Abortion Ban im not going to have to think about it because its working out so well right now, the states are doing it. I think the six week is two good it has to be more time at the same time, the democrats are radical because the nine months is just a ridiculous situation that so ill be voting no for for that reason, under the trump administration, your government will pay for all your Insurance Company will be mandated to pay for all costs associated with ivf and just, you know, just to make clear about the issue of abortion at nine months or after nine months, abortions, moments after birth or after birth, and illegal in the united states, despite their suggestions there to the contrary, and abortions at nine months, as trump was saying, theyre also very rare typically in cases where the Mothers Life is at risk as called the fetuss life is at risk. So thats, thats one point of fact that is important to point out. But nevertheless, all of this really underscores trumps two years after the Dobbs Decision its trump is still trying to figure out a way To Message this and knows this is a political vulnerability for him. I would also posit that the issue for republicans, its even much bigger than jusT Finding a Messaging Lane here there are fundamentally torn between a piece of their base who sees this as a human rights issue, who will not budge a single inch, who will pressurE Each of the politicians on this front to not only just be embracing a federal Abortion Ban or find a weeks, but to go further and further to the right, even if theyre consistently out of the place of republican opinion is. And so when we asked republicans about what they do on this issue from the local level all the way Up To Donald Trump. If you create any distance between yourself and that wing, youre going to find yourself in some trouble, even though the public has clearly stated that theyre on the opposite side of this issue. So i guess so the problem has shown most clearly through Donald Trump because He Hasnt been able to find a message on this. But i remember talking to republicans last year who frankly were just wishing that the issue will go away by the neske election. I remember Byron Donalds telling me, well, i think people wont be as motivated on republicans, On Abortion Come The General election next year. Thats just been completely ridiculous. He lives and i think just shows the larger pickle, The Party is and theyre on the wrong side. I just before you jump in, jasmine the Florida Amendment that Trump Plans to vote against, it would essentially keep in law, keep the current law in place. A banning abortion after six weeks, if you voted yes, that would ensure Abortion Access until about 24 to 28 weeks. So he is tried to distance himself from that sixweek Abortion Ban in florida, criticized Ron Desantis for this during the primary, but now hes essentially going to have to own it. Yeah. I think hes going to have to own and i think it just shows just how He Has really tried to position himself closer to the center on the issue of abortion. I think hes actually been the one person is party it was understood just how powerful the issue of abortion has ever since a 2022 elections, midterm elections that hes tried to be more moderate than the rest of his party. But i also think that this Ivf Rollout is a clear indication that they believed that regardless of whatever policies that the former president puts out, that the republicans are going to come home at The End of the day in november. And so this is he really doubling down of their idea to say, hey, look, it doesnt matter what we say, because it matters what hes going to do an Office And Youve seen him act in office in a way that emboldens people who are against abortion come with this now, come on this journey because we need to win in november. Now, whether or not that sticks, i think its plain to see, but obviously there case in point here is that republicans are going to come home. Theyre gonna double down because they want to win in november. In tHe History. And this is where the Vance Pick is a huge tell for me because i feel like if there was a really an attempt to expand out the conversation of bringing people who are different on this issue, Wouldnt Pick Someone who highlights those inconsistencies as clearly whether the Trump Campaign, newark or not, the Vance Pick has really solidified them into i think a tough corner, particularly with young women, particularly with people in the electorate that He Has not made in the tilt to really get closer to. There was opportunity for the Trump Campaign to expand its kind of aperture. It chose not to but perhaps, perhaps has for a different race. Yeah, this is before he was running and against Vice President harris. I think that they view the interview, they view the story they told at the dnc as kind of tacit responses to that as an introduction of someone who is basically at the midpoint of where the democratic party is. And lets same way for biden, i think by The End of his term, found himself at the middle of where The Party is. I think the difference between harris and biden are even Harris And Kind of folks who was running up against in 2019, is that they had a brand to the public. They had a story that they already knew about Joe Biden, the Country Kind of understood him to be a moderate dealmaker looking for things to get done in washington. Theres not a clear story worried that i think has been told consistently over a period of time about hurt. And i think thats where that 15 is coming from because far as much as she can say that her values have not changed the expression of those values as policy, the expression of those values is how you talk about yourself. And we have not seen the kind of consistent story between president ial campaigns. And now and i think that we cant just gloss over for that initial introduction to the public, thats how a lot of people came to really understand her Vice President ial role is one that is inherently in the background. And so in this moment right now, i think the campaign is torn between two positions, frankly putting meat on the bones to answer folks questions, to define herself, to give a kind of story to latch onto, and the fact that a lot of this unity is because shes a generic, vague vessel. A lot of downs it is being driven because a lot of people can come to her and kind of project different things. And so theres a tension between those two things right now, because one thing is serving them electorally, even though its a challenge with some of the lack of, but theyre also trying to use that my values havent changed what does that mean exactly . It could mean whatever you know, whatever whoever is watching things on mean, and this is why going back to the last segment, trumps inability to focus on Policy And Ability to have a cogent attack against her. Because it was so consequential. How did i get to the place where i was a part of this . Well, david fisher, who is my coauthor, approached me about it because it was political and thought will you be a good person since you cover politics to do it . Dan abrams, who, with whom He Had co authored several books brought the story to him. So that was the genesis, genesis of this. But the key is, and you just did a great job setting it up. That this 18, 72 gubernatorial election, the chaos around it, the violence around it was so consequential beyond louisiana because it was during this excuse me, it was after the Civil War and during Reconstruction And Manu at the time of course black men freed men were finally able to vote. And so the story around it was those who forces who wanted to help the African Americans vote and those mostly democrats in the south at the time, who did not and the violence around all of that can theres a through line from that . It through The End of reconstruction, which was just a few years after that. And then a about a century of jim crow laws, it all stemmed from this election and 18 72 law, that is remarkable. Theres deadly violence and led to racial violence. By paying the bleak is possible picture of this state when he entered office, there was almost nothing he could do that would make things worse while he would receive right. He was a carpetbagger from the north and went to louisiana and got involved in politics right away as a republican he was part of literally lincolns republican party. He knew Abraham Lincoln his Character Traits might sound familiar to you, manu, he eventually left the republican party or maybe noT Formally, but ran on another party in order to maintain his power he believed that the law was whatever he said it was and he changed the construct of the Louisiana Government several times in order to retain and maintain power, he encouraged violence when things didnt go his way. He understood the Media Environment and played it very well people loved to love him and loved to hate him. And his, He Had insatiable hunger for power. And that is what set in motion. So much of the violence, including the colfax massacre, which was brutal and 150, at least 150 black men were killed in in grant parish, named for President Grant and it was all about them trying to hold on to the notion of the election being stolen from them because black men were not allowed to vote the way that they should have been constitutionally already. Wow, jusT Fascinating and i want, i want to get you before we wrap about how youre last week has been youve been a little busy, a little given not on not only writing books, but also moderating debates.
