Original series real time with Bill Maher start the clock hi, everybody how are you doing hey thank you all right. Thank you very much thank you people. I appreciate it. How are you doing all right, well okay. All right. Weve got a big show. Thank you very much. I know its very exciting. Time of year. Its Labor Day. Fuck is the year already . Its christmas already. Its its Labor Day weekend. And right on cue. This is as they say. This is when the president ial race really starts and it really did. We finally had an interview Last Night with kamala harris. Did you watch it oh, wow. Thats a lot of people watched it. Not just her with Tim Walz. Her emotional support, vp well, i mean, it was it was a little odd. He was just sitting there for a very long time without saying anything he did. I mean, he was just. He was just nodding while she did all the talking. The womens Focus Group said he must be a wonderful husband really . I mean like, it just kept going. And he was saying nothing. It was like watching jeopardy when one of the Players Cant work the buzzer. You know they just. Id love to get in on this, but i i was that guy once, by the way but its so funny. The media has been furious that she would not give an interview. And now she finally does. Not a single question about abortion. Ukraine, the homeless, the opioid crisis, the national debt. And then they wonder why the kids get their news from Tiktok Uh including the question they always ask. The stupidest question in the world. What would you do on Day One . You know, its not that kind of a fucking job. Okay . Its just not that kind of a Job Id Cure cancer. What do you think id do . I would just one time. Love to hear somebody go you know what i do . Id unpack some boxes and id get dressed for the inaugural party. Like anybody else uh, no. Please Donald Trump, of course, had to. Shit tweet while he was watching it he could boring good Id Love some boring yeah, thats what i want in this ticket. Its Harris Walz not deadpoolwolverine yeah at one point he said she didnt look like a leader no. And then it was off to his monthly call with the Probation Officer who but heres something really interesting. The first debate, maybe the only debate is in ten days, i think. Okay. Theyre having a fight about the mics now in the last debate with biden. Remember, they turned the mics off when the Guy Wasnt speaking and trump fought against that. Now they reversed because they know hes his own worst enemy so so she wants the Mic On and his team wants it off. They also want him to wear one of those cones. Your dog wears when you dont want him to bite his own wounds you know hes the fact that she is beating him now is just making him more unhinged than usual. Which is saying a lot. I mean, hes talking about how hot he is. Hes just saying the most crazy things. Yesterday he said he wants now a a space National Guard in case theres an uprising by black Holes Matter and then he gets into a physical fight at arlington national cemetery. Now, it was the third anniversary this week of when we pulled out of afghanistan. It was it alqaim think there was a 13 of our troops died and so he went to arlington. You know, for the troops there. And, you know, theres a law, as there should be, that at arlington national cemetery, where our bravest and greatest are buried. You cant take pictures and you cant use it as a campaign prop. I mean, its like when homeless people started to fuck in libraries. You didnt think there should be a law about it but you have to, you know sometimes you just need a law of course. So of course, when trump heard this, he was like laws, right and they told him to stop and he was furious. He said, you are ruining a perfectly good exploitation of a tragedy and then he grabbed some flowers off somebody elses grave and said send these to melania and then when the park people told him to stop, he just shoved them aside. His goons just shoved them. Have you ever wonder what Donald Trump is like in real life . Tony soprano without the introspection. All right, we got a great show. House of representatives. Whos next . Whos New York Times Bestselling memoir is the art of power my story as americas first Woman Speaker of the house, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi hey dylan, good to see you wow nice yeah not bad reception there, huh . Nice welcome. They could not wait to get on their feet. And your memoir is out. But. But just because your memoir out, youre not done, right . Youre still in congress well, its not a memoir. Its just a report on some things. Ill do a memoir later. Well it covers some important territory. Yes, i mean, i mean, the big i on my scorecard, you got the Big Ones, right . And the Big Ones are iraq. You were against going in the financial crisis in 08. You bailed out the banks, even though that was very unpopular at the time. And then getting Health Care done when a lot of people wanted to throw that under the bus when it got tough and you kind of willed it into law um those are the three Big Ones, right its a lot of history except i didnt bail out the banks, but i and theres a picture i saw in the book of you and bush. Id like to show it, see if you remember it. I think its when you were the broke history is the first woman in that position and i show it because like, look, i was very hard on george busH For good reason. Kind of an idiot. No, but he was better than that. I was probably too hard. But that picture says a lot because he looks like hes genuinely giving you congratulations and even though youre on the other side, were all americans that republican is gone, am i right . Sure thats unfortunate that was a surprise to me when he came out and said i am the first president who will ever say, Madam Speaker. And that was a big applause and all that but then he talked about my father having served in congress and having been there when churchill spoke and other heads of state, and he could never have imagined that his daughter would be massive. So it was a beautiful personal thing that the president did. You know especially since up until that time, i had been fighting him fiercely on the war in iraq. So is there any way to get back to the great times of George Bush i think so, i think that its necessary for our country, for us to move in a unifying direction, to try to take us back to a place where we disagreed, but we were patriotic and loved our country as opposed to whats happening now its essential. Its essential. Can we talk politics here . I mean, its essential that Donald Trump never set foot in the White House. So i mean, they would say the democrats have changed a lot in that era, too do you agree or disagree . No. I think weve been true to who we are. We are the party of Working Class people the Kitchen Table concerns of americas Working Families have always been ours they will take an example here or there and try to tattoo all of us with it, but we are a diverse party. As i say, our diversity is our strength, our unity is our power, and thats why we have to come together for um youre from out here you read the local papers, the california lawmakers just passed a law. It hasnt been signed by governor newsom, but giving Government Assistance to undocumented immigrants to buy houses. Thats kind of a different place than the democratic party used to be on immigration is it not . Im not going to say thats what the country is going to do. But thats certainly where california is. Well, let me just say immigration has always been a bipartisan issue. I refer you to the nonfree houses. Well, thats not free housing. Its its The American Dream being available to more people. But understand this about immigration. The best speech on immigration was by president ronald reagan. This is the last speech i will make as President Of The United States. I want to communicate a message to the country i love. And he talked about the Statue Of Liberty and the beacon of hope. It is to the world and what america was preeminent in the world because our door was always open and we will cease to be preeminent when we shut the door. Now, thats i dont do justice to the great Communicator Google it. Its a fabulous Speech And George Herbert Walker Bush continued in that respect for the diversity of america and the rest californias always in the lead. Maybe others will follow that lead, but thats up to those states. But were very blessed here with beautiful diversity. You can vote for this law. Excuse me. So youd vote for this law . Well, i dont im not familiar with exactly what that is, but making The American Dream of Home Ownership available to all people is something we have to do for people who are here now. This is before u. S. Citizens. This is undocumented. This is for the undocumented. Well, what i would like to do is move them to document it. The fact that we can move them to document and one of the best things that we can do for our economy is to pass comprehensive Immigration Reform so that all of these people are participating more fully in our economy contributing to it, contributing to it contributing to Social Security Contributing in every way to it. So the the attitude that we have in california of openness is, is something we share, whether that translates into particular policy one place or another is up to is up to that region. Okay so theres some interesting stuff in the book about january 6th. Trump is going to have an Award Ceremony for the for the rioters coming up um, and theres some footage of you that just came out where youre talking about. You say, im quoting you. I take responsibility now. I think youre talking about the fact that there should have been more protection there. Know what im talking about is that we didnt demand that the president well, first of all, who could have ever thought that the President Of The United States would incite an insurrection against the Congress The Constitution and the capital . I was saying it for years. I was saying it for years. I was absolutely im not ever taking responsibility for Donald Trump. Right. But i only took responsibility. I will take for Donald Trump is to make sure he is not reelected every unless youre there i was saying is that we had to get the National Guard there, but he resisted. He he wouldnt do it. And what did he do . But i hate to use this word, but lie about it. Lie about it. Oh, you can use that word. Yeah. That i hate to use the word lie, and i hate to use the word hate. So that was a sentence that i didnt like but theres a lot of moving stuff in your book about an issue that weve all read about and it has to do with literally having physical fear for what you do and youre amazingly strong about it. I mean, youve obviously had that horrible break in in your house and your husband attacked. They tried to get you on january sixth. There was a lot of Wheres Nancy and people are now going to jail for it. It was on that level and i just would like to say to the people who i and i hear it all the time who talk about, oh, were moving toward civil war. Well, in a way, were kind of already there. You know, when people are literally fearing physically for theirselves, do you still fear physically . Well, i let me just say i signed up for this. And as for that part of it, well, i signed up for the public arena as note that im quoting a republican president , Teddy Roosevelt said, when youre in the arena, youre no longer a spectator. And ive said to colleagues and people interested in running, when you own the Arena Youve got to be ready to take a punch. Youve got to be ready to throw a puncH For the children for the children i would so im not, im not. I wasnt fearful that day for me because as speaker, your second in line to the White House, you have security. I was concerned about my colleagues. I was concerned about the press who were there. I was concerned about the custodians who keep the capitol, what it is beautiful for visitors. I was concerned about the staff. I resented what they did to traumatize the staff. Ill never forgive them for that. And same thing when my own situation personally, they came to My Home and to our home made it a crime scene, attacked My Husband nearly killed him and they were looking for me. So i certainly have guilt about that. But you know what . We have to take our country back to where a place is. You can disagree without being fearful for your life and and that of your family and that of your family that many times when im encouraging people to run, especially more women to run for office, nothing more wholesome than our political process than that arent we excited about. Yes. And sometimes youre youre discouraging people to run. Were not going to get into that. Uh uh no. Whatever. Make their own decisions. Absolutely. They do absolutely. They do and i but i just want to say from the bottom of My Heart, thank you so mucH For what you didnt do um last question. But when joe stepped down, did you want it to be an open convention as opposed to going right to kamala . Well, heres the plan. Kamala it was open. Anybody could have gotten in. She wrapped it up you have to give her credit for that. I do totally. And the democratic party theY You know what . Thats the smartest thing they did because they just had a big internal fight. They couldnt afford another one. They would have looked like we always think, oh, theyre disorganized and they just got there. You know what . Together thank you so much. I got to go. Peter hamby back with us, peter okay, so we obviously have a very astute crowd here because most of them applauded when i said, did you see the interview Last Night i guess because first of all, you know, supply and demand. There was no supply for a long time. The demand built up. We wanted to see. I wanted to know basically just what you thought of it. I thought she did great. I thought that she did fine. Were going to get to some of the quibbles but basically they got my vote okay that wasnt a hard one. And you know, i mean, i dont know why we ever thought she was as bad as people thought she was. It was like biden had that one bad night. She had a bad three years, but she did like, must but shes fine. I mean, shes fine. I i agree with you, by the way. I i interviewed her for my Snapchat Show in march when she was Vice President. Last time i had interviewed her, it was 2019. I came away impressed that she was much better on camera than i remembered in 2019, when she ran for the nomination, she seemed spooked, listless. She didnt have a campaign message. Being Vice President gives you batting practice. Shes done interviews shes been meetings with World Leaders but i agree with Donald Trump. The interview was boring, and thats fine. Thats all you like do . No harm was what the campaign wanted to do. I know people are criticizing her for Flip Flopping on positions. I think the campaign just wants this election to be about vibes and not be Donald Trump. And thats what theyre hoping. And i think its fine you have to listen to her in the right way. She actually has learned a really effective way of speaking smoothly. She does these triplets and shell say the ambitions, the hopes and the aspirations of the american people those three things are really all the same. The reason she did it is not because shes stuttering. Its because that is her way of not saying um, shes avoiding saying um or hesitating. She wanted to say aspirations and then shell give the synonyms as she waits thats a form of being articulate or if you watched her Last Night, then you could see that what she was really doing was she wanted to do two things. She wanted to talk about economic policy she had a list in her head, and she wanted to keep saying, you got the feeling she had been told and she agreed that we cant look backwards. Anything else that bush said to her . Her thought was, how can i bring it back to that . And that meant that you couldnt listen to her like she was trying to write an Article Or Something like that. What you say isnt always what you mean. She speaks ritualistically like a politician. If somebody asks you, do you have the time . Your answer is not i do. If you have the time, yes, its 4 00. You have to understand that words dont always mean what they mean. And when Tim Walz said, like the american people, i talk like i like they do. No, you dont. No, no you dont. Youre a huge liar like all politicians are. I dont care by the way, ive always said this about politics. Theyre all going to lie. Theyre politicians. Its what they lie about. I dont give a shit what do what you did during the iraq war, you were in the guard. So i dont understand why they just cant. Youre just insulting my intelligence. When she said what did you. What did you say when biden called you and said he wasnt running well, i immediately thought of him first. No no you didnt. You know, i mean fracking, i mean, Dana Bash Dana bash had her dead to rights. Its like you said this. You said i have the quote. Im reading it to you. You said there should be a ban on fracking. Why cant they just go . Yeah, you know what . I got it wrong. I was talking to the wrong people. You know, shes had like this ridiculously high turnover, like like 42 or 47 people as vice Vice President are gone. Just blame it on them. You know why these assholes are gone. Gave me the wrong information on fracking. I did i do think you have a point that theres a theres a way for her to talk. Youre the linguist. Theres a way for her to talk. A little bit more like a normal person. When explaining these shifts in policy. You know what i got into the White House. I worked with Joe Biden different contexts. I figured out what could be done and what couldnt be done. You know what people, politicians change their positions all the damn time. How could we be surprised that shes a politician . Ill Play Defense on it. By the way, shes playing to win, which is why theyre just saying, you know what . I dont care about fracking anymore. I dont support it the only reason it seems odd is because weve been taught to think of her first as a god. You know theres the joy and, you know, shes going to be on mount rushmore. And then we think about her as momala, and she has nieces and all of that. So you have this and you have that when really shes here shes a politician like anybody. I cant wait exactly. And im not mad at you for that no, no, i do think you made a good, good point in your Opening Monologue about how were so used to seeing them in these contexts of the big rallies for the last six weeks. And we see Tim Walz on tiktok, and we see kamala just surrounded by energy. And it was very interesting to see them in a different context where Tim Walz just sort of sitting there quietly nodding, quiet. And they do need to do a little bit more of that. So we dont have these expectations. Can i ask about that all the time . Can i ask you about that . Because i feel like i was saying to Madam Speaker that i think the democrats have been so smart from that moment when they got joe to step down. Everything has been good this idea of thank you, one guy, this i this why why put her out there it looked like when when your dad goes with the young woman to help buy a car, you know, or you know, when dad comes along, i mean, why she hadnt done an interview in so long or maybe thats the strategy they look like a married couple. They look like every interracial couple in every commercial maybe thats the no, but they they messed it up because im not. They didnt do the optics right. Because she looked like she was only two feet tall and he was up front looking like Frosty The Snowman so they kind of failed. But i see what they were going for, right . They also kind of i mean, i worked at cnn for ten years, and i know dana really well. Sometimes they shotgun these interviews when they set them up. They agree. You could tell they filmed it. It looked like in some like warehouse. And it was just sort of like a slapdash set. So its not always the most ideal setup. Not everything is going to look like a 60 minutes, like two day shoot. This right but i thought the best thing she did was would not take the bait on the race question. Totally that was that just was so great and that wonderful ironic. Like Donald Trump you know, and of course i mean even for him, she has unhinged him more than i mean, hes saying crazy by his standards. Crazy like talking about how hot he is versus how hot he used to be thats. And then, you know shes not a smart person. Maybe not even a Black Person Uh and and when that got brought up and she was asked for comment, she said, same old playbook. And dennis said, like, thats it, thats it. And thats my answer. Thats all youre getting that expression, that ironic. Just expression on her face was perfect. Its more of this weird. She looked like he was weird thats needed. Theres two. I had two takeaways. I had two takeaways from that comment one, she doesnt. We all see her on camera. Shes a black lady. I see her right there. She doesnt need to talk about her race. Right . Oh, half black, half half South Asian from the bay area. We all know we see it. Yeah like you dont need to focus on it if youre running for president. Hillary Clinton Talks about identity all the time. It didnt work out for her. And then thats related to the second takeaway i had from that comment, which is make this election not about identity gender, race like trump can win on those terms. You have to bend it back to i care about x, y, Z Values around abortion, around economics, around prices and getting back to the prices and the cost of living. I know she has to own a little bit of of the biden administration, perhaps all of it. But talking about issues rather than identity or academic issues is whats going to get you into the White House. It yeah, theres a little, uh it is a little odd. I heard some of these kind of lines at the convention, and i heard it from her. The first thing out of her mouth Last Night was, we have to find a a new way forward its an odd thing to say when youre in the present administration, is it not . It sure sounds good, though. I mean, thats what politics is. Weve got to move ahead and ahead is better than backwards, although it doesnt make sense that shes talking about the administration, that shes in language doesnt mean what it means. And there can be a kind of a beauty in it yeah. Theres a bunch of attribute questions out there in polls who will be a stronger leader, whos better on the economy . Whos best at managing a Crisis Biden was getting smoked in all of those categories. Kamala harris is now at parity with Donald Trump on all of those things. Strong leader coming out of the convention where she was talking about patriotism. Country first, a lethal american Fighting Force all of these things i think americans are just willing to look past the fact that she is bidens Vice President , and shes just not Joe Biden and shes not Donald Trump. And thats working for her. Shes even seen as like the candidate of change right now against Donald Trump. Shes sitting in the White House, the administration is seen as the candidate of change people are willing to look past that stuff right now its a kind of music, and you have to listen to it in that way. Shes new. We love new in this country. I tried to tell Chris Christie this in 2012. I said, do it while youre new. And then what happened . Bridgegate and he wasnt new. He was all tarnished obama. They said, youre running. Its too early. This is cnn breaking News Hello and welcome everyone. Im michael holmes. Appreciate your company. Weve got some Breaking News to bring you are that we are getting more information about those bodies that were found in in gaza by the idf. I think we have got with us. Elliott gotkine joining us from london. Yeah Elliott Gotkine israel was initially the idf was initially very cautious about information and not spreading rumors and so on. When these bodies were found. But what have we learned in the last few minutes . Thats right. Michael, in the last few minutes, weve learned what weve had confirmed the identity of one of the bodies of the hostages discovered by the idf on saturday. And that is of the israeliamerican Hirsh Goldbergpolin so he was 23 years old. His parents have been very vocal. Theyve met with president biden. They spoke at the Democratic National Convention some ten days ago as well. Always, you know, trying to put pressure on all the parties to try to get the hostages released, especially their son, hirsh. Now hes quite visible, not just because of his, you know, american citizenship not just because of the advocacy of his parents, but also because, of course, he was seen in the videos in the aftermath of the hamas led Terrorist Attacks of October The 7th with his arm one of his arms being partially blown off. And then he subsequently appeared at several months ago in a Hostage Video put out by hamas, which was looking you know, very gaunt and in you know, and with the stump of his of his blown off arm clearly visible. And that was the first his parents, the first kind of proof of life that his parents had had in some six months. Now we dont know the exact circumstances surrounding his death but the White House has put out a statement as well. This is in addition to a statement from the family. The White House, saying that in a tunnel under the city of rafah, this is in the southern part of the gaza strip, israeli forces recovered six bodies of hostages held by hamas. Weve now confirmed that one of the hostages killed by these vicious hamas terrorists was an american citizen, Hirsh Goldbergpolin. And in terms of the family they put a statement out on their Facebook Page and also on their other Social Media applications, was also put out by the israeli foreign ministry, saying with broken hearts, the Goldbergpolin Family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved Son And Brother hirsh. The family thanks you all for your Love And Support and ask for privacy at this time. Now were still waiting for confirmation of the identities of the other five bodies that the idf discovered on saturday, and im sure those identities will be confirmed. You know in the coming minutes, in the coming hours this morning. Its also worth noting that in response to the discovery of these six bodies on saturday, the Hostage Forum, which represents the families of those with Loved Ones who were kidnaped in those attacks on october, the seventh, they have called um, what seem to be tantamount to a general strike. They put out a statement Last Night saying netanyahu, prime Minister Netanyahu abandoned the hostages starting tomorrow. Thats today, september the first, in israel. The country will tremble. We call on the public to prepare. We will stop the country. And just to note that September The 1st is the first day of the School Year in israel. Its still quite early in the morning theyre not, what, 640 in the morning in israel so well see later on this morning if that call for bringing the country to a halt effectively is heeded by israelis all of whom will clearly be wanting the hostages home and of course, this also comes to give you further context, michael, against a backdrop of this quite stunning spat that was revealed between Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and prime Minister Netanyahu in which Yoav Gallant effectively accused prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of leaving the hostages to their fate. Galant saying to netanyahu, you either keep israeli forces or you insist on having israeli forces in control of the border between Gaza And Egypt or you bring the hostages home because there will be no Ceasefire Deal with hamas. If you insist on keeping israeli forces on this socalled Philadelphia Corridor, a gallant. And this is something effectively backed up by the head of the idf, herzl halevi, saying that look, israeli forces could leave that strategic corridor which israel feels it needs to control to prevent smuggling of arms and the like to hamas. And then retake it after the initial six Week Pause of that three phase. Uh pause. Sorry, ceasefire that has been discussed over the last couple of months. But certainly the main news right now, which were looking at is the confirmation of the death of one of the israeli hostages israeliamerican Hersh Goldbergpolin and as weve been discussing, michael, over the last few weeks and months of the 107 hostages still being held in the gaza strip, um, that around a third of them are believed to be dead. And the families of those with Loved Ones still in still being held in gaza have been raising the alarm for months now that the longer they remain hostages the less likely it is that they are going to be coming home alive and that, sadly seems to be the fate of Hersh Goldbergpolin and perhaps five others whose identities the idf has yet to reveal michael. Yeah, and to that point, as you say, there are five others. What will be the process going forward when it comes to them . Their identification and so on . What is the usual process . Well, look, the idf will have all the you know, scientific team and, and the tools at their disposal needed to identify bodies. We of course dont know what state theyre in or how easy they will be to identify they will ordinarily notify the families of those bodies that have been discovered first, and then usually what happens is you get a Statement Put out by the idf and or the hostage for forum confirming the identities of those that have been found that have been killed while in captivity. And the idf in its rather terse statement that it put out at about what, 11 just after 11 p. M. Israeli time Last Night said, you know, they found these bodies, but they asked people not to spread rumors. So one, would you know, err on the side of caution before identifying. There are, you know, lots of rumors and the names of those bodies who have been discovered are all over Social Media. But obviously until such time as theyve been confirmed and we know that the families have been informed, we obviously wont be reporting those names until we get that final confirmation. But usually we get a statement from the idf and or the Hostage Forum in the case of Hersh Goldbergpolin, i should say that i think the first news we got or confirmation was actually from the families Social Media accounts themselves. So thats another way that this information might come out as well. Michael. All right. Elliot Gotkine Thanks so much. Well check in with you a bit later. I want to go now to yaakov katz, a senior columnist at the jerusalem post. He joining me from jerusalem obviously devastating news for one family. There are other families, obviously still awaiting notification. Whats been the response in israel . I know its its only just after dawn there in israel now. But what was the response when this was first announced that these bodies were found well, you know, the rumors started to circulate already late Last Night here in israel about the retrieval of six bodies in a tunnel in southern gaza. And the names very quickly started to circulate. But until the families started to notify and confirm that it was their loved one, as we started to see this morning with the family of Hersh Goldbergpolin identifying and confirming that hersh was in fact killed, aiden yerushalmi, a 25 year old woman who was working as a barman at the Bartender Sari at the nova music festival. Ori danino another hostage who was taken from the nova festival, and there are three others whose families have yet to confirm their deaths so ill hold back from mentioning their names as of yet. Uh the already Last Night, Michael Israelis and many were saying today we have to take to the streets. Today we have to go out. We have to protest. We have to make the Country Tremble and shake these people were alive as of just a few days ago. They were murdered in captivity by hamas. And thats what we have to remember. So hamas killed them. Now the question for israelis is going to be, could israel have brought them home . And thats the question thats weighing on Everyones Heart here today in israel. Did we as a country, as a collective, as a people let down these six individuals . Weve let down a lot of people over the last almost year, since october seven. But these people were within arms reach, potentially to have brought home in a deal that the government decided not to make yet, and that is something that i think is going to lead to some, some type of protest that we might not have yet seen in this country. I just want to i just want to clarify something, and you may know what i do not do. We know that these hostages were killed by hamas. There have been hostages in the past who reportedly were killed by israeli bombardment. So do you have any information on how they were killed specifically from what ive been hearing and again, its probably best to wait also for this all to be confirmed by the idf, by the Israel Defense forces as it comes out. But it seems that there are indications that they were alive up until just a few days ago potentially. And then they were uh, murdered in hamas captivity. But like i said, its probably best to wait for that official Information And Confirmation to come out from the from the israeli military. Yeah yeah. I just want to be clear on that we dont know at the moment there was and this is important, the level of anger from Hostage Families after the news that bodies were found before we had names. I mean, the hostages are missing Families Forum called as elliot was just saying, called for the public to mobilize. And im just quoting part of their statement. They said starting tomorrow, the country will tremble. We call on the public to prepare. We will stop the country. Just try to give people watching some sort of sense at the level of anger at their own government. Well i mean, look, we know, michael, how the government has been engaging race since the beginning since october 7th, in different rounds of talks and negotiations with hamas. There was the deal back in november that brought back about 100 hostages. The women and the children although some women did remain about 17 women who were kicked out of that deal by hamas, which decided to deny their freedom even though they were supposed to. And theres been about 100 hostages who are still being held inside the gaza strip. And israel has been negotiating in doha in egypt, cairo, there have been rounds and rounds of talks that have been going on for months, and each time that it seems that a deal might be near and might be close and might be reachable, it escapes us and its elusive. Now, is this all Israels Fault . Of course not. Were dealing with a terrorist organization, so theres going to be a lot of anger this morning at prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But really, at the end of the day, the anger does need to be directed at these terrorists who abducted these people from the nova music festival, from their own homes, from the border, from their bedrooms, and took them into gaza and has held them for more than 300 days now. But the real question that israelis are going to ask, though, is what could we have done as a people . What could we have done if they were in fact alive up until just a few days ago could we have done more to have brought them home . And i think that this level of frustration, of sadness, of just theres theres no words this morning, really, michael . Theres just tears across israel. I think this is whats going to really weigh on peoples hearts as they try to figure out what can we do for those few people who are still alive somewhere in gaza can we get them out alive and bring them back to their families i think a lot of those israelis who are perhaps saying, what what could we have done are at the same time saying has our Prime Minister done enough . Theres a lot of direct anger at him for not having done a Hostage Release and Cease Fire Deal i mean, theres people in his own cabinet his own negotiators, who are angry over that. How much of that anger is directed at him specifically well, i think its going to be directed at him specifically, because lets remember, right . You know israels been at this war now for about 11 months, and we still dont know what the what the objective is of this, Prime Minister, what does he want to achieve . Right. Hamas has been degraded that we know. I mean, they still have they still have capabilities. They still have fighters, they still have maybe a battalion or two. But where are we headed . And what is the ultimate objective . And that that remains also elusive. And something that he is refusing to articulate. What we do know is possible is that there are people who are alive in gaza, and some of these who were alive up until recently, who could have been brought home in the deal. And that was something that could have been potentially achieved. So the anger is going to be directed directly at him, because hes the man who seems to have been upholding that deal why, michael, you might ask, and weve spoken about this before because of the political calculation. Also, he knows that if he makes a deal, the more right wing elements within his party, the Ministers Smotrich and bengvir have already threatened that if you make a deal that we do not like and theres no deal potentially that they would like under the current circumstances, they would topple his government. So really, at the end of the day, theres going to be a lot of anger at him because people are going to say, you prioritize your political survival over the real physical survival of these hostages. Who could have been brought home alive. Yeah. Which are extraordinary allegations to have to hear. Yaakov katz, thanks so much. We will we will speak again as the day unfolds there and gets underway where you are. I want to move now to cnn political and global Affairs Analyst Barak ravid, who joins me from washington. Youre as plugged in as anyone. Barak, what are you hearing uh well, this, uh, Recovery Operation happened on, uh saturday morning. Uh, it took several hours to identify the bodies that were found in a tunnel in rafah um, and it took time to notify all the families. And only after this process ended and some of the families, uh, you know, started issuing statements that those details were widely published but it was known for almost 12 hours now in israel that bodies of hostages were found. And one of the first reactions to this was that the uh, hostage Families Headquarters this ngo, this Umbrella Group that under which most of the families of the hostages are united, issued an unprecedented statement which basically called for a Day Of Rage against the israeli government, against prime Minister Netanyahu, calling on bringing the country to a halt in a demand from the government to push seriously for a Hostage Deal Something that, until now hasnt happened. Yeah yeah. What . And what we were talking about with yaakov katz. Um what what do you expect the level of anger among hostage Families Hostage Family groups. But also the general israeli public . How do you expect that to manifest i think its a big question mark, because until now, um the Hostage Families got a lot of support from the israeli public, but it got that support, uh, mostly in public Opinion Polls. When you saw that between 65 to 70 said that the government needs to put this issue as the top priority over any other issue, even over the destruction of hamas, even over the winning the war. Uh, the most the majority of israeli public wanted the government to pusH For a deal but and its a big but it did not manifest itself in mass demonstrations and mass protests in the streets as weve seen a year ago over the netanyahus judicial overhaul. We saw hundreds of thousands of people in the streets we havent seen that when it comes to the hostages, there are many reasons for it. People are tired. People dont feel comfortable going out to the streets in time of war. And the question is whether this is here. Were in a this watershed moment that will take people to the streets it is sad. The sense that Benjamin Netanyahu specifically put as many have said, his own political survival, the survival of his government over the welfare of the hostages because its an extraordinary thing to contemplate. But people are saying that well um, in every public Opinion Poll that was conducted in the last six months, any public Opinion Poll i can remember and i follow it pretty closely, more than 60 of the israelis say that netanyahu is delaying or sabotaging or not pushing hard enougH For a deal for because of his own personal political considerations, survival, political survival considerations. This is not me saying this is something you see in every public Opinion Poll. You hear this from the Hostage Families, and i hear this. I hear this from people inside the israeli Negotiation Team over the Hostage Deal i hear it from the most senior people in the israeli Defense Establishment and in the israeli Intelligence Community just on last thursday two days ago, the Minister Of Defense, Yoav Gallant the head of the mossad, the Idf Chief of staff, the head of the Shin Bet they all came to the cabinet and they told them the hostages doesnt have time. The hostages dont have time. They will die in captivity. If you keep on uh, mounting more and more conditions over a Hostage Deal for example, the issue of the Philadelphia Corridor and the gazaegypt border, something that netanyahu turned into his number one condition. So all the senior Defense And Intelligence officials in israel told netanyahu, take the deal before it will be too late we saw the Result Today i you know, you know israeli politics better than most i mean, it just on the on the surface of it, you know, youve got as you said, youve got officials in Shin Bet, in mossad, in in the cabinet, the Yoav Gallant and the negotiators all saying to Benjamin Netanyahu, you need to do this, you need to do this deal. And he puts in more conditions and the deal doesnt get done. How has he survived that . Why has he not been somehow overruled by the system . Explain that because at the end of the day, he still has a 64 members of Knesset Majority uh, and for his coalition as long as this is the case, he stays the Prime Minister and when you have on the one hand, only one member of his coalition, Minister Of Defense galant, who is uh, you know, publicly goes against him and votes against him in the cabinet. But on the other hand, there are another 63 members of knesset who do nothing among them. Uh, you know, more than 15 members of knesset from the radical right wing parties who tell netanyahu, if you go for this deal, if you sign this deal, we will vote against you. We will vote in a vote of nonconfidence. We will topple your coalition. And when netanyahu looks, you know, sees on the one hand, he has his Minister Of Defense and all the heads of the security services. But they dont have a vote in the knesset or in the cabinet. And on the other hand, there are, you know, people who can topple his government. And he says, well, you know, um im not going to im not going to lose my job over this thing. So, so is that the sense then, that the majority of the knesset uh, supports netanyahu in the way he has handled this um, has there been any sort of political movement against him other than what weve just discussed inside this coalition . The answer is no or at least not enough. In order to change his mind and to change his political calculation. Uh the theres i think theres a huge gap. Uh, and i think thats an understatement to even call it a huge gap between where the israeli public is and where the israeli government and the israeli coalitions a huge gap, a tremendous gap. Theres an abyss okay, 70 of israelis in a poll that was conducted, published just on friday, uh 70 of israelis said netanyahu should leave political life, 70 of israelis. Okay. That tells you everything. It certainly does. And yet here we are, barak ravid, your insight is important. Thank you so much. Thank you all right i want to reset now as we approach the top of the hour and bring you the latest on the Breaking News out of the middle east. For those just joining the White House, says the israeli military has recovered those bodies of the six hostages in gaza and the family of one Hersh Goldbergpolin has confirmed that he is among the dead. U. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken said Goldbergpolin Quote is an allamerican and american hero who will be remembered for his kindness and his selflessness. Now, the news that the bodies have been found has outraged some Family Members of hostages who, as you can see there, protested in Tel Aviv on saturday, the group missing Families Forum issued a statement saying, Quote Netanyahu abandoned the hostages. They are calling for the public to mobilize and for israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to sign that ceasefire Hostage Release agreement journalist Elliot Gotkine joins me again from on where we stand michael, where we
