Had fabletics. Com, cnn this morning with kasie hunt. Next its tuesday, august 27, right now on cnn this morning hes not a good debater, shes not a smart person. She doesnt want to debate the debate over debates 14 days from the first scheduled president this will debate the two campaigns are needling each other about how to negotiate, what will happen on stage. And russia launches what ukraine says is the largest air attack since the beginning of the war, leaving over half the country in the line of fire. And the state that may decide the outcome of the election battleground, pennsylvania, were going to break down where both candidates stand in the commonwealth. Just a few weeks out from early voting 5 00 a. M. Here in washington alive, looked at the Nations Capital on this Tuesday Morning. Good morning, everyone. Im kasie its wonderful to have you with us were now just 70 days away from election day and just two weeks out from the first scheduled president ial debate between Kamala Harris and donald trump but the two campaigns are currently already debating before the candidates take the stage. Cnn reporting that the harris team wants microphones to be kept on throughout the debate while the trump team wants the microphones to be muted when its not a candidates turn to speak that would mirror what happened in the first president ial debate earlier this year between trump and President Biden that is until trump told reporters this yesterday doesnt matter to me. Id rather have it probably on but the agreement was ever would be the same as it was last time that case, it was needed trump now saying he probably rather have the microphones turned on. Thats prompted this response from the harris team i think her position is the same as Donald Trumps position on this because he went on to say in that same interaction that he doesnt care, doesnt matter to him whether or not the mics are hot and frankly that he would prefer if they were hot so i think this issue is resolved unless donald trump allows his handlers to overrule him. Well have a fulsome debate between the two candidates with live microphones, where both candidates will be able to lay out their vision for where they want to take this country all this of course, also playing out on social media with both campaigns, posting videos, looking ahead to this planned september 10 debate why not debater will wait but because they already know everything drops around not doing the debate thats same thing now, i mean, right now i say, why should i i do it the leading in the polls, there is not much left at the end of the month, bidenomics is working, the price of housing has gone up. It feels so hard to just be able to get ahead and we are very proud about all right. Joining me now, National Political reporter for the washington post, Sabrina Rodriguez and axios capitol Hill ReporterJuliegrace Brufke. Good morning to both of you. Wonderful to see you wanting sabrina, you can see the Harris Campaign literally trying to push Donald Trumps buttons in the statements that they are making. They are. Calling him a chicken in this ad. The way that the spokesman, Michael Tyler talk about this that started yesterday morning about this time with a statement from brian fallon. Basically saying that trump should he didnt use the phrase man up, but that was the implication, right this of course it has them both going back andforth. Donald trumps also criticized abc news saying he doesnt want it to be on that network necessarily are questioning why he might go on that network. How does this all resolve itself and ultimately what difference does it make to have the microphones on during a debate i mean, i have to laugh because it feels like we always have this conversation about the debate over the debates and its just fascinating to see. I mean, at this point, were a month into the Harris Campaign and you can just see that they are enjoying this. They are leaning into to it. I mean, the video with calling him a chicken and everything that is coming from that but the reality is, i mean, they do want to see a debate because they feel like they have such a contrast to drive home in a debate with donald trump and part of what they were saying yesterday with all of this news around the debate, around the debates, was this the idea that trump cant be president ial for 90 minutes and thats why they dont want the mike saw. Thats why the trump side of the camp does not want the mics on. They would like to see the mics on because they feel that it is going to turn into trump trying to speak over overheard, trump making little comments, them having backandforths that they feel that she will be able to handle better than he can. So i think at this point its like again, this backandforth about the debates. I think we ultimately will have a september debates. I would say fingers crossed that i hear voters talk about so much, then wanting to see them on a stage and i would like to get to cover it, but it is just this open question because he keeps going back and i think clearly is showing that that she is getting under his skin. Well, i will say to your point about the debate over the debates, there had been sort of this long running narrative that debates dont matter or why do we spend some time focused on this . And then this debate with joe biden and donald trump happened. And reprove to all of us that. Well, no, actually debates matter and are very much, or at least they can matter very, very much and julie grace, one of the reasons why the Harris Campaign is pushing this Behind The Scenes is because they remember moments from when she debated mike pence when she was the Vice President ial candidate. And it works to her favor some of the moments that really sparked the most viral were all attention, if you will, was written out on tshirts in the aftermath. This was when she of course, told mike pence eventual Vice President mike pence, quote, are actually a human, excuse me, he was Vice President at the time that im speaking, lets watch the im speaking moment he said because the president wanted people to remain calm well, lets go. I dont know, but it isnt, this is important. I want to add mr. Vice president s speaking. I have im speaking before hundred thousand a year appeal to trump tax cuts. Mr. Vice president , im speaking well okay. That moment is impossible if the microphones are cut absolutely. And i mean, i think speaking to people in trump world and gop lawmakers, they felt that the mics cut off for for trump worked to his advantage last time around, but i mean, hes facing a very different opponent. I mean, i feel like there have been a lot of concerns on their end about him attacking her personally and making comments that could be perceived as sexist are going making comments about race that theyre worried about interrupting him. There i guess well see if he does show up to the abc debate, but i think theres a lot at stake. She just a very different dynamic than him going up against joe biden yeah. So speaking of him going up against joe biden lets watch a little bit from back in 2020 when trump was periodically interrupting joe biden again this was an a situation where the microphones were open as the candidates were able to have these backandforth and it led to another moment for biden, i obviously, biden was a different candidate at the time. Lets watch the question, is just as the rational left, will you shut up, man, who is on your list . Joe this is on you right . Gentlemen. I think pack the court. We are not going to give now those course. My colleague chris wallace, trying to kind of get things back on the rails a little bit there. But when they went into this debate back in june between trump and biden was actually the biden team that thought, well, this might work to our advantage as theyre thinking about the candidate they were trying to manage, then its really interesting how that is kind of been flipped on its head absolutely. I mean, the biden team really thought that it was their opportunity for biden to shine. They thought earlier this year with the state of the union, they thought if they could just give him an opportunity to squarely be addressing the American People and answering the questions that would be better than risking crosstalk with trump, where then he might lose the train of thought or it might just not land well, but now with commonly harris, its i mean, its a complete shift. She wants to engage with donald trump and especially around the sexism and racist attacks and him questioning her intelligence and stuff. Its obviously not that she wants to hear those things, but she is prepared to address those things. And in a setting like a debate if those mics are on and that is happening, she gets to engage with it in a way she wouldnt alone. Juliegrace does the sort of poking the bear that is donald trump is going to work on this question. I mean, it could, i mean, weve seen just during the dnc how hes responded to things on truth, social on going after mike walz calling him an Assistant Coach instead of coach and putting out, wheres hunter . And i think hes kind of struggled to kind of find a line of attack thats kind of clearly worked on going after Kamala Harris. So i think theres still kind of trying to figure out how to figure out their strategy on how to define her in these months moving forward, thats going to be important for them as they head into the debate. Yeah. And of course, referring to tim walz, tim walz, the Vice President , nominee, Juliegrace Brufke spraying rodriguez. Thank you both very much for being here. All right. Coming up on cnn this morning, lenders zelenskyy vowing a response lets to russian attacks after moscow launches what ukraine describes as the largest airstrikes since the beginning of the war, plus special counsel, jack smith, Making A Push to revive if the federal classified documents case against donald trump and Campaign Zero in on pivotal swing states, were going to take a look at how both candidates fair in battleground, pennsylvania shes march 49 yards down the field. Ukraines air force says swarms of russian attack drones were followed by volleys of cruise and Ballistic Missiles overnight targeting over half the country. At least five people were killed extensive damage. Now reported at Critical Energy facilities ukraines president making the case that his military needs to be unshackled you caution leader could nash, partner, every leader, every partner of ours knows what strong decisions are needed to end this war and to end it, justice that should be no restrictions on the range of weapons for ukraine. While terrorists have no such restrictions on measuring, defenders of life should face no Restrictions Explosions were heard overnight in the capital of kyiv. Residents taking cover in train stations. The mayor confirming that power and Water Supplies have been disrupted. Our max foster joins us now, live from london. Max, good morning to you. I thank you so much for being here so whats putin hoping to achieve here . Vladimir putin. And also can dig into what zelenskyy means by no restrictions on their weaponry well, i mean, a massive we had one wave of attacks from russia and is one of the biggest waves as attacks, theres been on ukraine that we had another wave attacks the next day. So it feels like its ramping up, but this is all part of of a pattern that russia has been falling into, which is attacking key bits of Civilian Infrastructure inflicting broad pain across ukraine effectively. So is it part of a pattern . Has it been ramped up because of ukraines incursion into russia. Its not entirely clear, but what zelenskyy is talking about here is his inability he feels it to defend ukraine because he isnt allowed to fire longrange missiles into russia to take out some of these places where russia is attacking from. And in terms of the defenses, he cant go into Russian Airspace under the current agreements with the u. S. For example, hes looking for more flexibility on that so he can attack back harder effectively so max, we basically looking at a situation where the balance is between avoiding escalation i mean, that seems to be the goal here, right . Of the policies that prevent him from using these weapons in the way he says, he wants to. Hes implying, well, if he was allowed to, he could win the war outright. But clearly theres some greater fear from western countries yes, its just purely the u. S. Is wondering if you allow him to go into russian air space, deeper into russia. Does that escalate tensions with russia . And what are the wider repercussions . How does russia respond to that . So that is the big concern, but i think there is an acceptance but has been all along that ukraine doesnt have the advantages of russia has because it doesnt have the same restrictions are what russia doesnt have the restrictions that ukraine has. So, but there has, as you know, kasie throughout this whole Wall Zelenskyy has always been asking for more and the u. S. Has often adjusted to it using certain types of weaponry for example, the planes, for example. And of course he didnt go into russia on his own accord, and he got away with it. We didnt have a big backlash from the u. S. And the european states. So thats if he does want to go deeper into russia. Im not saying it wont happen because the americans may agree to at some point, he may just do it in america allows him to get away with it it really interesting way of looking at it. Max foster for us this morning, max always grateful to have you. Thank you so much for being here all right. Its wonderful to have you with us on this Tuesday Morning with election day, just nine more tuesdays away, we have nine tuesdays until election day. If you can believe that were going to start taking a closer look at where things stand in critical swing states. A make or break place for both of these campaigns is pennsylvania, where Vice President harris and governor walz just went on an extended bus tour. Donald trump and j. D. Vance both plan to be in pennsylvania this weeks with stops in erie and johnstown. Polling shows, of course, an incredibly tight race. A recent New York Times sienna poll has harris with a 50 to 46 edge in a headtohead matchup with donald trump among likely voters. Its a reverse from where biden found himself in july pennsylvanias governor and almost harris running mate, josh shapiro says, voters are curious about the new democratic ticket when im out in Rural Communities in those areas around pennsylvania where maybe a voter voted for obama and then trump pomp and moved to biden voters had shift around there really curious about Kamala Harris theyll say to me, hey, what do you think of her . What do you think shes going to do on this that so the other thing that curiosity is important means theyre open to casting a vote for Kamala Harris alright, and joining us now to talk about Battleground Pennsylvania to people who spend their time on the ground there. Steven carusos Capital Reporter for spotlight pa and isaac abu lucias are reported for axios based in philadelphia. Gentlemen, good morning to you. Thank you both so much for being here. So you guys are based or your backgrounds are i should say, one of you has a background in pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. The other based in philadelphia. These of course, the two critical Population Centers and then there are these questions about margins in the rural parts of the state. So isaac, one, me, start with you because of course the philadelphia suburbs are the place, is the place where the Harris Campaign really wants to try to run up the score, especially amongst suburban women. Can you just explain what youve seen in the weeks and she came to the top of the ticket and how you see the challenges that they face in that region. Yeah you. Know, i think its really important that they spend not only a lot of time in philadelphia, its already a democratic stronghold, but i think, you know, i was talking to one political pundit and annie was saying they have to really not ignore the Rural Counties philadelphia is important, but philadelphia by and large is kind of already solidified. Its, its an urban center. Its a democratic stronghold. And really what you have to focus on is going to some of those more rural the rhetor counties where shes going to face a little bit more stiff opposition from voters where the demographics are a little bit wider, a little bit more conservative, maybe so a little bit more leaning toward deference toward law enforcement. I so i felt like something thats something that shes going to have to tap into and then, maybe that kamala is a Cop Narrative that plagued her president ial run four years ago, is something that you can kind of tap into with some of those rural voters that do tend to be more deferential to Police Officers or really kind of focus in on her past record as a prosecutor prosecuting transnational gangs of the light, be focus in on that issue. Yeah. Fair enough. And in fact, stephen, heres what senator John Fetterman had to say in an interview over the weekend, talking a little bit about the redder counties in the state watch red. County dems. And they are doing the hard work and its not necessarily the kind of job they are true believers or not here in this business to turn like a Deep Red County its about to jam things up in pain to but the kinds of margins that allow trump to possibly win here in pennsylvania so steven, you obviously covered the state house now, so youre based in harrisburg. Which youve got this deep background in the pittsburgh area. A lot of these counties, fetterman is from Western Pennsylvania. These are places where as he says, theyre going to need to blunt the margins. This, these are places where you had a lot of obama to trump voters, right . What are you picking up on the ground about the job that theyre doing around that and how much hope the Trump Campaign potentially has of actually winning the state yeah. Well, i think that democrats are always a really energized right now after having Kamala Harris, people on the ticket, i know that there is some concerns about biden kind of near the end, but i think that politics always game of margins. If youre going to win a big state like pennsylvania, every counties is a little bow ground and the difference between republicans winning 40 of the vote in 40, 40 lead in the vote. And elk county on Western Pennsylvania and winning 30 could be the difference in this election so i think thats why places that senator fettermans from matter id also point to Central Pennsylvania where i spent a lot of time Lancaster County almanac country, but also the city of lancaster, a thriving metropolis of its own. Thats a place where in 2022, governor josh shapiro brought that county within about five points. And thats a place where republicans normally get about 20 points. So its not even just about east, west, or anything like that the Rural Counties i think republicans have to really we get margins out of our places. They traditionally took for granted, like Central Pennsylvania and democrats are making inroads as they get more and more suburban. So i think from all across the state, were going to see this margin by a lot of key places from Allegheny County to Lancaster County to even philadelphia. Yeah, thats actually thats fascinating. Stephen then what else are you seeing on the ground . Threads that youre picking up or places, anything that you feel like we in the National Media were inside the beltway are based in new york, cant see from our Vantage Points that you think we should be paying attention to . I definitely i point to a Central Pennsylvania itself sexual pennsylvania. I mean, were talking about the area around harrisburg, lancaster, carlisle, Cumberland County outside of the capital of harrisburg, is one of the fastestgrowing county, pennsylvania. It started flipping blue in recent elections. Shapiro one and 2022, a state Supreme Court candidate, democrat in 2023, if that keeps happening, republicans chances of winning pennsylvania get lower and lower and lower. So im expecting to see a lot of interest in that part of the state of Western Pennsylvania obviously matters thats what my alma mater is, but population been shrinking there. Its going, it has a lot of i think traditional value of prestige value, but trumps first visit, i think since harris was announced, was to harrisburg, i believe i remember he had a visit there, the nra has a Big Convention there, so im looking to see how much energy to people put into that that constellation of small cities and growing suburbs around harrisburg and isaac, let me put the same question to you is since your based in philly, what are you seeing on the ground that you think deserves more attention . My eyes are focused fixated on bucks county in particular were talking about a county that hillary in 2016, she carried it, but she struggled. There a little bit. Carried it by very slim margins and then in 2020, biden obviously one bucks county, but what were seeing on the ground here is that for the first time in 15 years . Heres bucks county has actually read its typically a purple county, but for the first time in 15 years, we have more registered republicans than democrats. So thats, thats kind of an interesting thing on in and something that were really keeping tabs on. That is the title of a new Childrens Book written by bestselling author Alice Paul Tapper just happen to be the daughter of cnns very own jake tapper the book was inspired by a near fatal Health Emergency that alice endured in 2021. She was 14. She was suffering from Stomach Pains and chills she was misdiagnosed. They thought she had a viral infection, but it turned out she had a perforated appendix there was leaking poison. This bacteria the purpose of the book is to encourage everyone, especially kids, to speak up and advocate for themselves when it comes to their own health. Because really it can save your life. And Alice Paul Tapper joins us now on this morning on her 17th birthday, alice, happy birthday. I think grabbing me graduations on the book i honestly was reading this book again in one of our commercial breaks and i was tearing up a little bit thinking about the prospect of my own children or children that i love facing what you what you faced, which was take us back to that day, walk us through what happened that led you to the hospital and how you realized it was worse than what doctors originally told you so it started as a normal the night before i was hanging out with friends and i was at my first freshman year football game. And then that and i i just started gain some games and i threw up and every progressively got worse. So my mom took me to the e. R. And they had sent me to a hospital that declared i had a viral infection and im like the summit flu or something exactly. Exactly. So obviously as a 14yearold, i was listening to the doctors and its like, okay, i trust them obviously theres a can you trust adults 100 so but i just felt like something was wrong and i was in so much pain. I couldnt straighten my legs when i was laying in the hospital bad because everything just felt so tight and painful and i just kept telling them my im in so much pain and they were dismissing my pain. Right. So you knew it wasnt normal, but they were telling you that it was so eventually your dad helped step in and also, you talk to you, communicated to them what was going on with you explain what your dad did and what happened next . My dad called out of the hospital and within nine minutes i was getting a ct, a sonogram an xray and i hadnt gotten gotten any imaging before and they came into my room afterwards and immediately said something is seriously wrong with your appendix and everything changed from there on my care, i was in so much pain still, but my appendix can ruptured because i had been so long, 32 hours and everything was just it became septic shock hypovolemic shock. And i had to be rushed to the icu so what had happened was that you had gotten progressively sicker and sicker to the point that your life was actually in danger . Yes. Right. Because everyone knows what appendicitis is. Ive heard of people whove had it and i was so confused as to wondering like, what could i have done possibly this wrong that they missed appendicitis . So you use in the Book A Pain Scale and youve worked with a really brilliant illustrator whose drawn a little faces of all of these different little animals. You can see them there from zero, from no pain with a happy face all the way up to ten and for you, number nine becomes the character in the book okay. And this is so important because this is often how doctors will talk to kids about or people about how their pain is and you talk about how you have to say what, how much it really hurts what did you learn in that experience and why do you use these little guys to help explain to kids how they can help themselves . Well in the hospital. The pain skills really stood out to me because every hour nurses were coming into my room and showing me a pain scale and i never really knew what to say. I knew i was just saying im in the worst pain ive ever been in my life, which is a ten. But you really have to use your voice and something that i learned in the hospitals that you are your best advocate and speaking up for yourself is sometimes the only way youre going to be able to take care of yourself and get the help that you need so what would you say to kids who are if feeling or theyre in a situation like this, especially kids, you know not everyone is so lucky to have such amazing parents like you do, who can get the head of the hospital on the phone. I mean, what would you say to people who are fighting back against systems that theyve run into and, you know, maybe its, its no fault of the people that theyre working with, but they need something that theyre not getting. Yes. And this is why im so passionate about that, is im not everyone has a dad that can just call that of the hospital and get an xray to find out whats wrong with them. My life was on the line and if i had waited any longer, i would have gotten so much worse for me. And who knows if i could have even recovered. And i want to just let kids know that you really have to speak your mind and use your voice and thats the point of the book is to just advocate for yourself and push for yourself. Yeah, its, i mean, its amazing. I alice, im so sorry. Of course. You actually had to go through this, but being able to use the voice that you have to help other people is really amazing. So congratulations on. Thank you so much. Happy birthday here the book is. Use your voice by Alice Paul Tapper.
