unprovoked war of aggression in ukraine ambassador julie smith, thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> we do appreciate your time. we are getting fresh reporting from the fire lines, fast-moving wildfires out of california, a new our of cnn news central starts right now intense whipping when threatened to fuel a dangerous wildfire raging this morning in california, hundreds forced to evacuate and 15,000 acres already burned also, a weekend of deadly shootings across the united states in michigan's families ran for their luck hi is i after gunfire erupted at a community splash pad nine people injured. >> there. the gunman's motive under investigation this morning and the us surgeon general says he wants to see warnings on social media like the ones you see on cigarettes adding to the pressure on lawmakers to protect children on social media apps. >> kate bolduan out today, i'm sarah saga, john berman, and this is cnn news central >> a felony conviction in the courtroom, we see donald trump for who he is. >> he's been convicted of 34 felonies, found liable for sexual assault, and he committed financial fraud. >> meanwhile, joe biden's been working joining me now is the biden campaign co-chair and former mayor of new orleans, mitch land row. >> thank you so much for being here this morning. i want to talk about that. as i said it's great to see you. i want to talk about the ad first because for all this time as these cases have been coming forward president biden has really shied away from saying anything about the justices. and because donald trump has been attacking him saying this has all his fault, he's the one that's pushed these forward why change this now? >> well, first of all, it's not a change when the case was in litigation, the president didn't have any comment about it clearly, this was a case brought by an independent district attorney and there's no there are no facts or evidence to support donald trump's attempt to take the focus off of themselves. but what this ad is about is about showing the american people about the issue that's going to decide this campaign wisdom courage, character. you have a choice between two people. you have somebody like joe biden who wakes up every day. he's fighting hard for american citizens. he's working hard to lower prices. he's building 56,000 projects across the country. and in the meantime, you have another stark choice one of the most dramatic stark choices in the history of our country. somebody who is in fact a convicted felon of 34 felonies also, most of the people around him when he ran for office before have been convicted, are in jail 17 of his cabinet members have now said they won't vote for him, including his vice president. he's been bankrupt six times. he's been determined is it going to face in a couple of months and you're going to see the clear difference between the two and the debate that you guys are going to host in just a couple of weeks mich, it sounds like this is going to be a big theme as you would expect it to be during a presidential debate. i do ask you about polling. we heard from president biden when he was talking to aaron breton burnett, that he doesn't really believe the political policy was talking specifically about the economy. let's listen to what he said the polling data has been wrong all along when i started this administration people were saying are kinda be a collapsing the economy. >> we have the strongest economy in the world. let me say it again. in the world all right, so he talked about that and then we have some polling that has come out that our data reported harry end and pointed out that for the black vote, president biden, they're showing he's losing support according to the pollsters that donald trump could get 21% of the black vote is that being ignored? >> is the campaign ignoring that? are you worried about it well, first of all, it's gonna be a very close election. >> every one of every one of them is secondly, there's no, there's no universe in which donald trump is going to get 21% of the black vote. that's never going to happen. and so it's not that we're not worried about that, but we're fighting i'm very, very hard for every vote and the records of each of these men is clear in this regard, polling is always important, but it is true. and i think you guys have to recognize that it has been vastly wrong for a lot of time, especially in the recent past. so it's not that you don't care about it. the second thing is this. president biden has it's in fact created 15 million jobs since he has been an office, donald trump lost 2.5 million jobs, the greatest loss of jobs in the history of the country for any president and accept herbert hoover. and so we're going to continue to tell that truth because it is the strongest economy in the world. however, prices are still too high. and that is why the president is really working hard to fight cope creations, to really make sure that we bring down costs for prescription drugs and to do the work that is necessary to give every american a little bit of breathing room. that is a message that we have to take to the american people and we're not going to stop talking about how well america is doing in this particular time. i don't know why donald trump keeps tearing down america. everything he says about this country would make you believe that we've gone through a hellhole. all you need to do is travel around this country and see the unbelievable things that are going on. that's not to say that we don't have problems and we have challenges. that's why the person who sits in the oval office is important. and that's why wisdom, character, and judgment are necessary. because if you're the kind of guy that make decisions in the dark, that only help you and hurt everybody else. that's not the kind of guy you want and sitting behind the resolute desk looked like at the economy, is doing well, by all measures. yes, the prices are high. there was also the infrastructure real, it was pushed through that some republicans in their states have been touting not getting the credit according to joe biden, but metallic their citizens that this is a great thing. look at the roads, look at the bridge's, we're doing things. but the messaging doesn't seem to be hitting voters. why do you think that isn't? how do you think that needs to change well first of all, that's not necessarily true we're not at election day. >> we still have time to get there. and of course, over time, people will see those things. they see the incredible work that was done to restore i95 or to clear the channel in baltimore or to get the highway backup and operating in pittsburgh and the competence of elected officials as a result of the work the joe biden did with governors. they see part of the 56,000 projects that are helping them have clean water, clean air, high-speed internet, and building all of this infrastructure 15.5 million jobs will continue to resonate. but we've been through a very, very tough time. remember, when joe biden took over, the economy was in a freefall. donald trump was asking people to drink clorox. thousands of people were dying. this president rescued this country and actually started the recovery. and we're well into it right now, but that is no reason to actually hide when you created more jobs and most presidents have done in that term or not to talk about how strong america is, or how well we're doing vis-a-vis all of our international partners joe biden, lead that effort primarily because he gets up every day thinking about people donald trump, as you know, you know this, i don't have to sell this year. that guy gets up, he thinks about himself. he looks in the mirror and he decides who he needs to go punch in the face because he's mad out of about something somebody resigned every day when he was in his administration, you have 17 cabinet members that left donald trump's administration that said, please don't vote for him again. including his vice president. that's never happened before. and as we continue to tell that story in america, the american people are really wise. they know that the choice they're about to make is going to have consequences. i didn't reach far into the future and we haven't yet started talking about the pain that the supreme court has put on people and how it's going to get that much worse when donald trump gets another choice for that court or maybe even too much, i just have to ask you. i know i've been wrapped, but i have to ask you about what trump challenged joe biden, on which he wants them to take a cognitive test, where we have a very short bit of time, but he did he tried to remember the name of his own, dr. donald trump putting any message while he's challenging mr. biden, what do you make that? >> i think donald trump is a joke. i mean, when this guy went his lips move and he's lying. and then when he tries to confuse, when he tries to accuse somebody else's of speaking improperly. he can't keep two thoughts in his mind. i want to encourage americans to go listen to donald trump's full speeches and try to put that word spaghetti it together. and i wonder why anybody is questioned at joe biden's mental acuity. donald trump can't string two sentences together. i mean, it's the biggest joke in the world my president is going to show up on time on task and he is going to give it to donald trump next week, he shows up. he's done his job. you just saw him criss cross the continent three times with world leaders and he's back home getting the work of american now because that's what he does every day. and the proof is in the pudding. we have the receipts, 15.5 million jobs, 56,000 projects going on in economy that's stronger than any other economy in the world. >> and taken it too big, corporate america to reduce their prices because inflation has come down from 9% to 3%. mitch landrieu, i think you've got all the talking points in there today. just fyi thank you so much, justice, truth, justice truth. sara is all objective me, harry harry will fact check you, but i know most of what you said. >> definitely true. thank you so much. john leonard. thanks to mayor was talking about the presidential debate heat, which is now just ten days away. that's next week right here on cnn. so much at stake today, donald trump meets with the house speaker and another key republican at mar-a-lago. cnn's alayna treene is with us. what's going on here with these meetings later? >> well, that's right john donald trump will be meeting today. with house speaker mike johnson, as well as the chairman of the national republican congressional committee, richard hudson. and luck, i think this meeting is very important for both sides. what the two house leaders want is for donald trump to help get their members and their candidates elected as fall and donald trump has some agendas of his own, which i will walk through. but first i just want to talk about the house races, so we know that donald trump in the past has been a kingmaker in many of these key battleground races. and for many house members, however, in 2022, many of donald trump's candidates who he endorse forced went on to ultimately lose in the midterm elections. and so this is something that i know has weighed very heavily both on donald trump's mind personally, but also that of his team. they have been endorsing far fewer people. this cycle, they say publicly it's because donald trump is focused on his election, but my, conversations with the trump campaign. a lot of it comes down to them not wanting to support candidates that could ultimately lose. so that is part of what they will be discussing today. the other part of this is donald trump. wants to stack the house with people who are going to be very loyal to him and who will help him fight the democrats now, we have some reporting that in the aftermath of his conviction in new york on 34 counts of falsifying business records. donald trump called up mike johnson to vent to him about this and wanting republicans to do more on his behalf to fight democrats against what he thinks is weaponization of the government. and this is going to be a key part of this conversation today. because if donald trump can get enough people in office who will help him, if they can secure a large enough majority in the house. this fall. and if donald trump were to win, they can do two things. one, they can help him with his 2025 agenda. they can also help him wage war on the democrats, which donald trump is very much obsessed with doing at this time so a lot of topics i think that will get discussed today at mar-a-lago, john lead attorney and great to see you this morning. thank you very much in that debate, the first presidential debate right here on cnn, it is next thursday night at 9:00 p.m. eastern, june 27. the days so close to debate, of course raided by jake tapper and dana bash do not miss their all right. >> oh, wildfire, about 70 miles north of los angeles, has consumed nearly 15,000 acres so far. and as far as 1,200 people to evacuate so far, the post fire began saturday afternoon, gorman, california quickly spreading due to high winds and really dry conditions. so far cal fire saying it's only 2% contained. cnn's camila bernal is live from the area lubeck, california, where you can see those wins whipping right now hey, sarah. >> yeah, it really has not died down. the national weather service predicted win or gust front 60 to 70 miles an hour. and it's likely what we're experiencing right now. i don't i have a wind gauge, but you can see the wind just hitting not just us, but also the fire and the embers. and that's really the concern here because the wind gusts can pick up those embers and fly them really across highways, across streets and directly into people's homes sometimes, you know, that's why they already have those 1,200 people under evacuation orders. there are many others under evacuation warnings. and the thing that they've been telling us throughout the day, all day yesterday was that people needed to be ready because you just never know how quickly these flames could spread. we know that firefighters right now are trying to do everything they can to keep that fire line, to keep the weight from continuing to push the fire and they've been using air resources. we saw a number of airdrops yesterday it's over and over again because we are near a lake, those resources were available. so that was great for those firefighters who are communicating with the cruise on the ground two were inside of all of this bush and this terrain trying to cut some of it out with chainsaws and hand tools. it is 24/7. our work but today of course, the problem is that they're up against this when sarah about wind, we can see you don't need a wind gauge for that. that is incredibly dangerous for that fire. plus, we're looking at some pictures of helicopters dropping, some of the retardant there and they it cannot fly usually an heat. but what the heck is going on here, that 14 mass shootings, that means four or more people were shot. >> yeah. what we're seeing is interpersonal violence schools out. people are outside they're in each other's faces and each other spaces. they're drinking. people let their guard down. they also have guns nearby. we just had several years where we had millions of guns sold every year in both of those pandemic years of 20202021, those put 40 million guns on the street so now when people are upset, things that might turn into a fistfight. and i'm turning into a shootout. i mean, what we see here is there was a family squabble and west virginia where a family members were shooting at each other. that was five wounded shootings at gas stations, people just getting upset, reaching for a gun and then it turns into a shooting what kind of sticks out to you in the sense of where this is all happening. >> usually we see a lot of shootings in the southern states, states where there are a lot of guns and loose gun laws. here we're seeing shootings everywhere massachusetts, michigan. these are states that have gun licensing laws where you actually have to get a license just to buy a gun what we're seeing is the democratization of gun violence across the country. even states with very strong laws can't seem to contain their gun violence problems. >> it's really fascinating. i was struck at all of this happening and just before this is the supreme court on friday struck down a ban on bump stocks. joe biden president biden is trying to get congress to make some action to sort of get rid of bump stocks. what do you think about this in context with what happens in this country where we see mass shootings on a regular basis, unlike any other developed nation or a developing nation in the world, this doesn't happen. in other countries, and there is a reason it's because they implemented some pretty strong gun regulations before hundreds of millions of guns get out into circulation where a country with 450 million guns, and that's more guns per people now with the bump-stock decision, bump stocks aren't really found in street crimes. there are about 500,000 of them in circulation, but it is indicative of an attitude toward the second amendment that seems to be prevailing in the supreme court, which is gun rights over public safety and we saw that in 2022 with the bruin decision where they actually changed the calculus for deciding second amendment cases, even though it didn't apply in the bump-stock case, it was more about federal authority, federal agency's authority what we see is if it wasn't a gun law, if there wasn't a historical analogue, if it wasn't a gun law, hundred and 50 years ago, it's not part of our history and tradition of gun regulations, so we have to toss the regulation we're seeing a lot of regulations and we have a case coming up possibly this week where domestic violence, if you're a domestic offender, if you have a restrained painting order, the justices are deciding whether you might be able to have a gun and this is how guns get in the wrong hands. >> it's really interesting. and four, for those women and men who have survived domestic violence it is terrifying to think about what happens if people who have been convicted of something like this. but then you also have red flag laws, like when you see this, if the supreme court decides that they are going to allow those who have been convicted of domestic violence to have guns. the red flag laws, when it comes to mental health. do you see that being the next thing that is attacked by potential? actually the gun lobby, everything's on the table as long as you can put every gun really regulation up to this history and tradition tests it's a crapshoot really where, where these laws are going to land. >> i mean, we're seeing foundational gun laws being challenged in term, including people who've had felonies in some districts now if you have a non-violent felony you can possess a gun. and so everything is on the table and it is because of this supreme court that is 6-3 conservative. >> it's really interesting because it is very divergent from what the public at large has been pulled on time. and again, they do want some restriction, not total getting pretty guns, but they do want some restriction over and over and over again. and it is very different from what the public thinks this country needs. so we will be watching this very closely. i know you well, thank you so much for coming on, appreciating report. >> all right. >> what relating to the war gonna be disgust and decided in what's known as the security cabinet, which includes more ministers. >> among those ministers. however, is that's the less smoke fridge, the finance minister and its amount of ben gvir, the national security minister, both hard liners and i mean real hardliners these men basically the gore ugly, refuse any ceasefire agreement until hamas is completely destroyed. they want this war to continue until hamas is absolutely obliterated, which means that it's going to be ever more difficult for prime minister netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire, a ceasefire which at this point after efforts made by president biden and secretary of state antony blinken doesn't actually seem to be going anywhere. anyway, sarah. >> yeah it is a huge disappointment and it's certainly the fear in gaza and growing by the minute. thank you so much. their ben wiedemann appreciate your reported from beirut. john goes now, retired general wesley clark, former nato supreme allied commander and founder of renew america together and general bint, we would ending in beirut in lebanon, there is renewed concern over the fighting between hezbollah in lebanon, the shia militia, they're and israel with a intensified exchange of fire over the border there. >> there's the us representative now traveling to the region and try to help mitigate this i guess my question is, why do you believe hezbollah has not launched a full-scale operation against israel to date, what has kept them? for making this an even more intense confrontation i think two or three things or john might be looked at here. >> a first of all, they're cooking the frog slowly shower, they're letting israel struggle in gaza as they gradually checkout how israel is going to respond put the pressure on israel gradually escalate it's a cautious strategy, but it's a strategy that they are pursuing because there's no restraint on them. and so they can get away with this. they'll take a few. it's reports. are they now have anti-aircraft weapons. they do have dropped owns. they have more electronic warfare. so they're going to school on the israeli responses. number one. number two, they're tied closely to her wrong. and i believe iran either has nuclear reference. now or we'll have them shortly. >> and i think it ranj view on this is don't mess with israel yet. >> let us fix our nuclear posture and then we've got deterrence against israel in the region. so i think it's connected to the broader issue of iran nuclear posture general, again, over the weekend, he is really military. and now it's done. i use that word because it really did. they came out and said there was going to be what they call a tactical pause around rafah during daylight hours to allow aid in and then ever since that announcement, they'd been sort of explaining it away. trying to say oh, this is not a ceasefire. oh this is only to let limited amounts of aid and but the fighting will continue here. how do you explain what this actually means and the difficulty they've had explaining it? >> well, i hope it does mean that more aid comes in but i think it is political move to get the pressure off from the united states their boat ramp, the ship ramp is not working that well. are we had to move it again we know there are reports of imminent starvation so politically israel wants to do something to get the pressure off. but at the same time, the reason to walk it back is a lot of pressure from the right wing in israel just finish the job. if these get rid of these people, we don't care about the humanitarians the situation in gaza. it's a war. they started it and show the israeli government, it's militaries. we're balancing between these two forces you can't really alienate the united states because the united states is providing military assistance. >> and president biden has been fully in support of israel. >> but on the other hand, president biden as his own political considerations to worry about, and israel in one way or another is trying to be somewhat sensitive to those general, what attainable military success over the coming weeks do you think the israeli military could have in gaza that would possibly change the status of peace negotiations. >> other words, they say they're going, they continue to pressure hamas. but what could they achieve that would change things? >> it's really hard to make that assessment without actually seeing the intelligence picture, knowing what's being collected knowing what the gaps might be. a norm or other resources might be brought to bear? if you go to illuminate the hamas military leadership, which some people have jokingly said, or maybe it's not a joke is ten stories underground somewhere in the rafah area. then you could perhaps say that you had been successful in this and that would move things forward otherwise, what you're going to do is you're going to continue to put troops and you're going to continue to respond to intelligence that you've got an enemy force here, you've got hamas. they're put some forces and their see if you can bring them to the surface. m/v fires against him? a yes or he's gonna be civilian casualties. but you've got to move the war on. and that's not a very successful recipe. it hasn't proved successful yet so it's really about getting the right intelligence to take out the leadership of hamas. that's what's going to be required to really move it toward a ceasefire. in my view, john carroll was the clock rate to see you this morning. >> thank you very much, sarah. all right. thank you. john catherine, the princess of wales, stepped out this weekend for her first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis. princess kate has been away from her royal duties since the start of the year. she joined the rest of the family to celebrate king charles birthday, who is also dealing with cancer. let's get right to cnn's max foster, who is joining us now from london this morning. we see these pictures and it's really great to see them together, both looking well, they are still struggling with this terrible disease, but, but should we expect princess kate to sort of be at some of horror, normal royal engagements from now forward. >> well, i know that king was delighted that she was there. obviously, they're going through a shared experience right now and they take each day as it comes, it wasn't a guarantee that she would show up even though she's intending to because as she said, on friday, she has good days and bad days. she's not out of the woods yet. so they are taking each event as it comes. so there are plans for more appearances over the summer. we're not told which they are and we will be told near at the time, but with the same caveat really that if she doesn't feel well enough, she won't actually show up and we shouldn't read too much into that. that's to be expected. it's not like a sudden pullout it's just the up and downs of her treatment where she told us is going on for months. so we don't know when she's going to be back to a full schedule. it'll be sometime towards the end of the year, hopefully but certainly she looked really well. the kids are ron fine form. louis got a lot of headlines with his dancing on the balcony at one i think sarah, you probably in a better position really to relate to how she looked and how she must have felt. >> look, i just i don't care how she looks. mitch, the fact that she is able to go out there and be with the family and signal to the public that she is doing well on this day. it is remarkable and i think it's actually a really good example. two people to say, look, i have good days and bad days. it lets everyone else that is dealing with this, you know, say yeah, that she's definitely telling the truth. and if it's comes time that she doesn't feel well enough to do it, then she's given herself permission and told the public a i'm not going to be there it's going to impact my health. i think it's a really, really good message. max foster, it's always enjoyable to talk to you and to see the antics of louis. we all love a little, a little slightly naughty boy because all of us can relate to that as well. thank you so much. max. john. >> all right. the first presidential debate is just ten days away. we're getting our first look breaking this morning, the us surgeon general is calling for warning labels on social media in new york times it's op-eds or in general thick murthy says, urgent action is needed to fight the threat that he says social media poses to children not only have companies not demonstrated that their platforms are safe for kids but there is growing evidence of harm. >> so that's deeply concerning to me, not just a surgeon general, but as a parent myself now a warning label with help parents to understand these risks, manu parents don't know that those exist seen as make your l is with us now when, when you think of a warning label, meghan, thank you. >> think cigarettes yeah, absolutely. >> i mean, that cigarette warning was put into effect in 1965 after a landmark surgeon general report on the risks of smoking. and we have seen an impact over the decades to declining use of cigarettes. >> now of course, the surgeon general has been warning about the potential risks the social media to children's mental health for a while, he put out an advisory last year, but this morning calling for even stronger efforts including from congress to implement this warning, citing data in this opinion piece including that adolescents on average are using social media almost five hours per for day as of data from last summer, according to gallup, he cited additional data from jama, the journal of the american medical association psychiatry, seeing adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of mental health problems, including symptoms, resembling depression and anxiety he cited another study showing almost half of adolescents say that social media makes them feel worse about their bodies. >> so in this opinion piece this morning and the new york times, he says, quote, it's time to require a surgeon general's warning label on social media platforms stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents he says a surgeon general's warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved, save he's also calling for additional legislation from congress on social media companies, including requiring these companies to provide data on the health effects for children, making that public having more oversight from independent scientists, john, it's important to note just because he's calling for it doesn't mean it happens immediately or automatically. there needs to be legislation here, meg, but but what can parents do in the meantime? >> yeah is who he's calling on schools, parents doctors, everybody really to jump in on this. in the meantime, because these things do take time. he says tips for parents right now include things like creating phone free zones around bedtime, dinner time, time for socialization, waiting until after middle-school to introduce social media to allow kids to start using it, and also to band together with other parents because it can be really difficult for families to go this alone. so sort of coming together with others in your community to create a kind of shared rules with other families so that kids don't feel like their families are the only ones being strict about this and our colleague sanjay gupta does done a lot on this and his podcast also with the surgeon general. so that's worth listening to and chasing life. >> it is this is not an easy thing. i can tell you from experience, meg tirrell. thank you very much for being with us. i would like phone free time around bedtime. >> i but you do i just hit sleep and then they can't bother me and bother me. now i know why you haven't answered my color is nice. it's good job, john. all right. right. now, authorities in greece are looking for an american who disappeared while on a hike, 59-year-old, albert calibet has been missing since june 11. his disappearance is one of several investigations involving tourists in greece. turns, tourists have been going missing. there. and then you have this added issue with the heat rave, a brutal heatwave, gripping greece and much of europe where some tourists to have died, cnn's clear, sebastian joining us now from london greece is such a beautiful country. lots of folks love to go and visit there what do we know about this investigation into this man who went missing? >> a couple of or a week, almost a week ago yeah, that's tuesday was the last time he was seen as you say, sir, albert calibet, he is a retired sheriff's deputy from california police telling us the search still ongoing this morning, he said to have gone on a solo hike in very hot weather, around 104 degrees, but he said, was the temperature when he went hiking? they are now sort of narrowing down the search. this is an island called a more gous of greece and narrowing it down, they say they're searching in one part of the island focusing on combing 15 different hiking routes. he is not the only person missing, as you say, there has been a sort of string of these incidents involving tourists to french female tourists are currently also missing on a different island. one of them apparently sent a distress signal to the guesthouse where she was staying and they have also been missing for a number of days. and of course, extra urgency here because this follows a string of deaths and other american was found on a remote rocky beach on sunday in an island just to the north west of corfu he has been identified authority say, oh, they're not named as of yet, he was 55-years-old and this follows several other deaths, including british tv presenter michael mosley, who was found dead last sunday. those temperatures, as you say, have been extremely high and it looks like they could continue athens this week set to be peaking at around 96 or 97. so this is something that authorities are certainly warning about claros sebastian. >> thank you so much for that reporting. appreciate you. a new our of cnn news central starts right now ci minus ten days to history srery, the earliest general election debate ever. >> we
