Afternoon on early pickup. All right, harry, thanks. So much and thanks to all of us Special Election coverage starts now this is a big night in michigan as voters in that critical swingstate cast back now lets in the 2024 president ial race, most Polling Places are closing right now. In democratic and republican primaries that are Testing Support for the likely nominees both parties, im Anderson Cooper is a Special Edition of ac360 and im jake tapper. We are standing by for the very first results from michigan. Now that voting has ended it most of the state, were going to get our first chance to project winners once the last Polling Places close less than an hour from now in the democratic primary President Biden i might be facing his most serious challenge yet this election youre not from his longshot opponents. Congressman dean phillips know from progressives who are opposed to them president s response to the israel hamas war. This group of progressives, they are pushing for a permanent ceasefire and they want biden to cut us military aid to israel. And they are urging Michigan Democrats to cast a protest vote, to vote for uncommitted in the primary instead of voting for President Biden. The war in gaza is an issue that hits hard in michigan, which has one of the largest Arab American populations in the United States. And were going to be watching to see the size of this uncommitted it did vote to gauge dissent within the president s party. As he heads toward his widely anticipated rematch with donald trump now, President Biden narrowly beat trump in michigan four years ago, the state should prove to be decisive once again, in november and the republican primary, trump is aiming for yet another big win. Over his rival nikki haley. Just a few days after trouncing her in her home state of South Carolina, trump is counting on michigan and its 55 republican delegates to propel him even come closer to clinching the gop nomination as we await the first results tonight, our correspondents are standing by there covering the candidates. There are key Polling Places throughout michigan again, first to jeff zeleny, whos covering the democrats tonight and hes at an event in dearborn, michigan for supporters of that protest, vote for uncommitted jeff, what are you hearing from the biden camp about the test of the president this evening . Well, jake, one of the central questions hanging over this entire 2024 campaign is whether the president is able to make this election a stark choice between his candidacy and former President Donald Trump, or if it becomes a referendum on the policies of the Biden Administration. And this michigan primary tonight, there is going to be a critical test of that going to give us a few key data points about what voters are thinking about his policies, of course, his handling of israels war in gaza. We are here in dearborn, michigan. Of course, this is the heart of the Arab American and Muslim American community they have been key supporters of the president. They certainly war in 2020. Not anymore, jake, weve been here talking to voters. We were a few weeks ago as well when the president was in town, the anger is clear. The disappointment is clear. They want a change. So this is a protest vote, Voting Uncommitted. But the question is, how many people actually turn out to Vote Uncommitted . Now, that may not be our best its a guide tonight because theres, of course is the noncompetitive election President Biden is not facing a challenger per say, just as policies are being challenged. But talking with democratic officials, of course, one of the president s Biggest Challenges is keeping his coalition together. Of course, thats Arab American Muslim American voters, but its also young voters progressive voters, black voters, latino voters, of course, michigan was ground zero for that. Joe biden sort of pulled all of those factions of the Democratic Party together for years ago. Now that coalition is fraying, but jake, i had instructive conversation with a pastor here in detroit earlier today. He said, the biggest worry for the white house, the biggest worry for the Biden Campaign is apathetic voters. He said apathetic voters dont go out and Vote Uncommitted they simply stay home and that he believes is the biggest worry for President Biden. All right. Jeff zeleny, interesting stuff. Cnns Kristen Holmes is it west palm beach, florida covering the Trump Campaign . And in crystal, what is the former President Donald Trump looking for when votes come in from michigan . Well donald trump is expected to handle the win this primary against nikki haley instead, his team is looking for clues to inform a potential General Election rematch with President Joe Biden. As you noted, jake, donald trump won michigan in 2016 and then lost to biden in 2020. And it recent poll and fox news michigan voters, they looked at a hypothetical rematch between the two, and trump had 47 of support over bidens 45. Now that is well within the margin of error. But gives you an idea of how close this race could potentially be. Now, many of trumps allies believed that michigan is the key to the pathway back to the white house. And heres what theyre looking forward tonight. They are looking at first moderate Republican Voters so far in this primary season, they have leaned away from the former president. The other thing that theyre looking for is an area that donald trump has underperformed in several of these contests, which is suburban voters. This is going to be critical in michigan in the fall. Now one of the hopes of these advisors that with all of these resounding early wins in north eden, nevada in iowa, in New Hampshire, that some of those voters, some of those moderates, some of those suburban voters are going to shift towards donald trump all right, now Kristen Holmes, thanks so much. Dianne gallagher is at a Polling Place in ann arbor, michigan, home to the University Of Michigan phyton wolverines, dianne, whats happening where you are . Thats right, jake and we have just shut down this Polling Center right here. I have with Me Precinct Chair jenny rogers, who is going to read to meet the results from her particular precinct for 37 and ginny, what is this what does this summary say is its coming so on the Republican Party ballot, we have 73 votes cast for nikki haley 23 votes for donald trump, and one uncommitted. And on the democratic ballot, weve got hundred and 95 votes for joe biden, one vote for dean phillips, for votes for Marianne Williamson 66 own committed, and one right in and thats it. Then that would all 364 votes cast today, right . That is precinct for 37 here in ann arbor. Of course. Look, jake mentioned of course, at home to the University Of Michigan. This is a blue area in more than one way. Theyll look President Joe Biden beat donald trump with about 72 of the vote in 2020. So the expectation was to have a greater number, of course, of those democrats product ballots. But what many here in michigan had been looking at was that uncommitted number because that listen to Michigan Program that campaign had been focusing on ann arbor specifically typically because of the progressive vote and the young vote here, again, this is just a snapshot of this area. One precinct of many in ann arbor buried at jake all right, dianne gallagher, thanks so much and its the turn of the hour or so we have a key race alert for you. Lets bring you some of the, some of the numbers as they come in on the republican side and the republican primary, michigan with 1 of the vote in donald trump is in the lead with 54. 4 of the vote. He is 10,950 votes, roughly 3,000 votes ahead of nikki haley, who is 39 point eight of the vote. She has 8,011 votes obviously, it is very early. We only have one of the vote in, but those are actual votes, not polls. And now we have some democratic numbers to look at the democratic primary in the state of michigan with 117 delegates at stake, President Joe Biden, the incumbent with 4 of the vote in as at 8. 3 of the vote. Uncommitted is coming in second. Thats at 7. 2 and dean phillips, the congressman from minnesota is at two President Joe Biden has 31,753 votes. And that is roughly 30,000 votes ahead of uncommitted, which is a number were going to be watching all night. John king i see you starting there with haley and trump, but the truth of the matter is for both democrats and republicans. But one of the things were going to be looking at tonight is the size of the number to vote to see how much of a protest that is of the person in the first place . Yes. As we think we are moving on to the General Election, as we see donald trump five and older public and contest expected to make it 60 tonight, to Super Tuesday next week, the challenge both campaigns and start thinking about november. If youre joe biden and youre worried about young voters and muslim voters and Arab American voters. And the other people of Middle Eastern descent, 300,000 plus in michigan alone, if youre worried about the people who voted for you last time thats means youre on your heels and joe biden doesnt need that. So this number tonight will tell us something how much will see by the end of the night about how weak is President Biden in his own base . Because we know trump, weve seen it. Hes five and his strong in his, the numbers speak for themselves over the past several several weeks, weve been here. So the question is, doesnt mean he cant fix it by november, but its deep. I was out in michigan several weeks ago. And youve seen on the College Campuses and albert. So if you look, lets just even look at what we have so far. Lets just start with actual votes. Oakland county, this is where omar was. This is the suburb west of Macomb County. This used to be reliably republican suburb, but in recent years, what has happened, College Educated voters, suburban voters have gone democratic. This has become blue and biden here the question is to watch that biden needs these votes. Therell be some nikki haley votes here in Oakland County, suburban people who dont like donald trump. So well see that the biden needs them if hes worried about these voters when he should be targeting nikki haley voters to win in november. Thats a problem. So thats one place you want to go to omar. Hes there, right. And then you come out. Well, omar is there right now and who weve got so far in Oakland County, all the votes we have are from Oakland County. Everything we have come straight from lets pop in with omar right now, whose, whose at a voting site in waterford township, michigan. Omar, whats happening . Theyre your Polling Place just closed. You have any numbers for us, you have any votes yeah. Waterford township here in Oakland County, just close a few minutes ago and they transmitted their numbers because up to the county giving you a preliminary look at District Nine at precinct nine, here in waterford and Oakland County, 230 total votes came in, 44 of them are for democrats, 185 republicans on the democratic side of things, biden got 29. Dean phillips, one uncommitted, 13, and then on the republican side, 159 for trump, nikki haley, 21 one and ron desantis, who of course we know, announced the suspension of his campaign, got five votes. We have two districts here. So that is for District Nine on the precinct. Precinct six side of things, which is the one that was telling votes over there. You can see them finalizing just a little bit of what theyve got, but they too have transmitted their votes to the county they had a lot more on the republican side, trump two votes. Nikki haley, 28 votes uncommitted, three, again, preliminary numbers that theyve told us here. And then the democratic side was a lot fewer, 13 for joe biden to for dean phillips, and five for uncommitted again preliminarily is what they told us here. It kind of falls into line with what we heard as far as a wide range of opinions from voters here today, we heard from very strong biden supporters who felt the most its important issues to them were the economy and feeling like they needed to have someone they could trust in the white house. But of course, strong Trump Supporters and some who just couldnt vote for joe biden this time around. So omar in that first precinct, what were the numbers for biden and uncommitted again, just for that first precinct the numbers so this would be for District Nine that we were just talking about, the numbers for biden were 29 votes and uncommitted was 13. Very interesting to hear more for okay. Omar, thanks so much. What do you make of that . I mean, 13 uncommitted, 29 for biden. Thats a lot of uncommitted is a small sample. But still, if that continues, thats the question. So theres your first sample and the one thing for all the wonder of the magic wall. One thing i cannot do tapping here is know whether those votes omar, just write out there all from this county, whether theyre already theyve already been reported by the county in the state. That part i cant tell touching precinct by precinct doesnt exist, but they are consistent with what youre seeing in the math here. And the question is you know, in other precincts, obviously hes doing better than what omar just said in the county so far, but the question is, wheres that number . Youre right. It how significant is it . Because look, theres a history of voted on committed in the Michigan Democratic primary. So we want to be careful not to overstate it at the same time having been there and our reporters on the ground there, jeff zeleny is in the heart of this in dearborn, just west of detroit if joe biden is still fighting for his base it makes it harder to beat donald trump and michigan. Look at 20 16, trump beat Hillary Clinton in michigan, broke the blue wall, won wisconsin would onto the white house joe biden flip the script right, one michigan, one, wisconsin one, your home state of pennsylvania, the commonwealth in 2020. This is the fight, the blue, the old blue wall, which has now become the midwestern battlegrounds. Once in a president ial election, if you come out to this and go back to look at it, let me come out. Thats the primaries, but let me come here and look at this is the fight, right . This is it. Here . Here. And here, and here, and possibly here. But these three states tend to go. And joe bidens victory in michigan in 2020 was his most comfortable of these 354,000 votes. The question is, if you have most of the 200,000 Muslim Americans who live in michigan mad at you. And you have a lot of the Young Students who were key to the Democratic Victory in 2020 and the democratic wins in michigan in 2022 mad at you. Then youre dealing with that. Youre dealing with a base problem when you need to be reaching out to get the other guys votes, especially haley votes, and well see biggest takeaway i got from listening to omar right there. Is that so far in the republican primary tonight in Oakland County which is again, a suburban county just north of detroit 30 if that holds up. What does she say about 30 , it proves it does prove theres a third to 40 somewhere, somewhere from 30 up to 45 of the party that doesnt want donald trump. The keeps voting for nikki haley. Its not enough to beat him. Its not enough to get delegates, the people who care most about that number, or the Biden Campaign, those are potential voters. Youre going to get them all know most republicans will come home. But if you can get some same thing, joe biden as a problem with the Muslim Americans, he has a problem with the Arab Americans. He has problems with liberals who are mad about the war has prompted a young voters who are mad about the war donald trump has a problem there. The question is, who can pick the other guys pocket . Interesting. And one thing we should note as we watch the Uncommitted Votes come in. As you noted, michigan has a tradition of thousands of people Voting Uncommitted and in fact, in the last election in the democratic primary in 2020, about 20,000 people voted on committed about 28,000 voted uncommitted he didnt in the republican primary. And you keep going back every four years and its about 20,000 people in each party Vote Uncommitted. So i kinda look at that and maybe you told me what you think about this. I kinda look at that as the floor for the uncommitted movement. This evening 20,000 is like thats kinda like what happens every election. They get 30, they get 40, they get 50,000. Well now were talking thats a real protest, right . So if you look at roughly 20,000 and i think thats thats history says thats a fair number. One of the dynamics sometimes in those Uncommitted Votes is a certain candidate decides not to contest this state right back in 2000 at Uncommitted Vote was way higher because both brock obama, john edwards didnt, didnt play in michigan and their voters voted on committed to sort of say, i want to go and vote for my guy, but i cant vote for my guy. So it was much higher than the question this time though, is theres nobody, theres nobody liked that. Theres not another democratic candidate who said, im going to skip michigan because biden strong there so that i think is a true protest vote as opposed to years past where there are Different Reasons for it or maybe lets not overstate that. Its all about israelgaza uncommitted is going to tell us people who had a chance to vote for an incumbent democratic president or vote for his longshot challenge, or they chose to Vote Uncommitted. So it tells you number one, theyre unhappy, theyre looking for something gauss than that. And then the question is in our reporters on the ground will help us how much of it is israelgaza, how much of it is repairable, and how much of it may be irreparable. There are the front page of the arab American News, 68 weeks back was abandoned. Biden and when you talk to them out there and you say, but that might help trump win. Some say, ill think about that closer to november. Other say i dont im care that this is a matter of principle that im going to vote against biden on a matter of principle. And if trump wins, so be it. Thats the challenge for the president. Thats why his National Security advisers, Deputy National carrier buys it was out there last week. Thats why roe kind of the Democratic House member was out there last week trying to help him. Thats why the Campaign Team was out there. This is a this is a fullcourt press and congressman, congresswoman debbie day hinkle, who you know is from right down here, is a traitor. Xi has been no called a formula fivealarm fire and pull it every fire alarm can find that saying you better get out there, youre in trouble. And one of the things that the people behind the uncommitted movement are trying to do tonight is send the message look, it doesnt really matter what happens during the primary. Joe biden is going to win the democratic primary. But were here and donald trump only won michigan by 10,000 votes in 2016 you need us, let me go to dianne gallagher, whos at a Voting Location right now and diane urine, ann arbor what are people telling you about this Uncommitted Vote the exact conversation that you and john were just having . I spoke with several Uncommitted Voters here in ann arbor who gave various reasons its for this vote now i do want to get into some numbers that i just received the course. These are unofficial, but they have been transmitted from the city of ann arbor, ward five, precinct 48 boris, the Democratic Party goes. President joe biden, 41 votes. Dean phillips for Marianne Williamson for an uncommitted, received 39 i just a to vote difference between joe biden and uncommitted. Now, on the republican side, we have six votes for nikki haley, 15 for donald trump trump, and three for uncommitted, a total of 112 votes at this precinct. But look, i did. I spoke with many Uncommitted Voters here in ann arbor, several of them telling me theyre not a part of the arab American Community. But this resonates with them and this is their opportunity. They said to have that protests to let the president , who they did plan to vote for. They said november, hear what they have to say about this particular issue so its interesting, this is the math she just said on the Biden Uncommitted i left dean phillips and Margaret Mary was stuff 41, 39. Thats almost a tie. Right . So thats one precinct. This is shes in shes here washington are counties where an arborist so countywide bidens. Doing much better, but still 25 , a 25 . This is a college, this is the main voting bloc. Here is its an arbor. The college town. So you have students who could vote there, then you have the entire infrastructure University Michigan is a giant place. Again, hello, we are on the campus. Its about two months back now, but we were on the campus. Were there and they had a banner pulled out and they had a printout from the literally from hamas. And they were writing the names on the banners. And there were students. There are many of them were ever americans, but there were many other students stopping by to help them and we spoke to the head of the College Democrats who said they were trying to have immediate think to plan about the election. And it all the energy was about israelgaza. Now the question is as time passes and as the president s tone has shifted, as the president s policy has shifted, he now says he may have a ceasefire by early next week. Can the president repair the damage that is the question, because the damage you see it right there. You just heard it from diane. You see it in this one precinct. The damage is well the damage israel. The question is you have eight months. Can you repair it all right. Lets lets walk over to the panel right now. Is that were doing let me toss it to dana. Dana bash on to you. Thank you. And as we continue that conversation, one of the main reasons were so focused on michigan tonight isnt because and we can just repeat this, isnt because we are not sure whos going to win the democratic primary and whos going to win a republican primary . Its what does this tell us . About november . And looking back in history, just go back to 2016, there was a very, very intense primary in michigan between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was going to win that primary. Bernie sanders eked it out and if you fast forward to the fall of 2016, Hillary Clinton ended up losing michigan and so thats one of many examples throughout recent history of places like michigan and michigan itself being a harbinger for problems that a candidate has an a primary that bear out General Election. Is that one of the things that youre looking at and looking for here, David Chalian definitely one of the things to look for in any primary contest. I think is what its not a one for one situation. We should note that, but what General Election vulnerabilities are exposed by the coalition of folks that come out and vote the way they do inside the context of your primary because we all know politics is a game of addition, right . And you need a unified base of support from your own partisans to be in the ballgame for a General Election . And so looking for cracks in the Biden Coalition in these democratic vote tallies tonight is what were looking for. I mean, ill just note with 7 of the estimated vote in now the Uncommitted Voters already 11,607 raw vote. So theyve already crossed the ridiculously low expectations setting that they had is that for 10,000, but weve only got 7 of the estimated vote in. So there are 11,000 now that raw vote number is going to grow throughout this evening, perhaps substantially. So well see how much of a Protest Statement is made here, but it doesnt mean and this is important for us to remember all along that every single one of those Uncommitted Votes is a dominant im trump vote in the fall or stay at home know joe biden vote. Perhaps the vast majority of these folks who are participating in change, democratic primary are making a statement tonight to try to change policy, but are going to be in this contest between trump and biden volun very well. May be with biden, but it does give the Biden Campaign there todo list in michigan is really the enthusiasm gap, which is probably the biggest challenge that biden faces heading into november, getting the base energize, which is clearly a large protest vote will make it very clear, but the amount of work that they have to do here, whats interesting too, is just the challenges that each candidate has within their own party for biden, it is clearly the base is Younger Voters, minority voters in here, muslim voters, Arab American voters, trump the right of center voters, the suburban voters. Those are the people that have been voting for nikki haley. How much of vulnerability do we see from him in tonights results . As david said, this is, we know the outcome here. The impact would it means for november is what were gonna have to scrutinize here. Yeah. I mean, to a certain extent, were were were doing vibe punditry, right . Because we know we know how its going to end. We know binds going to win it we know trumps going to win it. And so instead its trying to feel where, where the conversation is going to be for joe biden and donald trump in the days ahead. I mean, one of the things which is i think theres a point that david made when we were on tv, 14,000 years ago this morning is one of things im looking for is what is nikki haleys number when shes not been campaigning in michigan. That shows you the more organic base kinda number also we were just talking about ann arbor. Thats a town im sure that when for Bernie Sanders in 2020. So its heavy with College Students and its its early to figure out the vibes quite yet although i believe that michigan and Michigan State are on spring break right now, ive been reliably informed from a michigander. Were counting down to our first chance to make projections in the michigan primers. And were awaiting more results from polling in places that have just closed up. Next, were gonna talk with nikki haley. Shes now warning republicans that nominating donald trump will be suicide for the country theres much more ahead on this primary united michigan stay with us elliott spitzer, crusading governor by day, wanted to be president in United States client number nine by nights this guy who was a crusader against Human Sex Trafficking is actually a customer, United States of scandal with jake tapper. King charles tomorrow it on and we have another key race alert for you with actual votes coming in and the Michigan Democratic priority and primary rather for incumbent president s, joe biden is in the lead with 78. 7 . He has 67,346 votes. That is 53,553 votes ahead of uncommitted but thats still a pretty big number for uncommitted 16. 1 of the vote, 13,793 votes. If that trend continues, thats going to be pretty big. Dean phillips pulling up the rear, 2. 6 of the vote on the republican side, donald trump, no surprise in the lead with 63. 7 of the vote, that 60,800 for its 79 votes, almost 30,000 votes ahead of nikki haley, who has 32. 4 of the vote. Thats what 7 of the estimated vote in john king were seeing increasing numbers of votes, actual votes coming in. Its exciting. Where are they coming in from . Where theyre coming in from his interesting and where we do have none yet, in some ways is more interesting. Lets see. Lets focus on the democratic race because youre right. We said you 20,000 votes seems to be the normal vote, traditional vote fraud committed with about 8 of the estimated vote youre already up to almost 14,000. So that tells you that number is going to go up. Heres what told me. Its going to go up even more. We have nothing. Im going to start where we have no votes. Thats backwards, right . Normally on an election night, you go, you have votes. This is wayne county. This is where detroit is the campus of wayne state, among the places we visited where there was a lot of antibiden sentiment, not big picture, but because of israelhamas dearborn right out here in the detroit suburbs, interstate 94, just to the west of detroit. Thats where jeff zeleny is. Thats where you have your largest population of Muslim American, Arab American, and some, many christians as well, christian palestinians, people who traced their Family Heritage back to the middle east, who are mad at biden. Some say abandon biden some just saying a protest, biden, that number is going to tell us a lot when we see wayne county, its also the largest Population Center in the state of michigan. So were going to get the most votes from here, but its the democratic base. This is so critical for the president. What else are we seeing . So he just popped around a few other places. This is Oakland County, as i mentioned, critical to winning the state of michigan when wayne county, then you go out into the suburbs you have oakland tear and mccomb here, 13 of 13. 5 , 14 . If you round that up again, you know, lets not, lets be careful. Hes getting 80 of the vote. Hes the president. Id states is getting 80 of the vote. So if youre home and youre a biden fan, youre saying why arent you focusing on that . And we should focus on that. Thats 80 of the vote, but thats nobody, thats an im mad at you vote and in a state that can be so hotly contested, hillary couldnt loses it. Shes not President Joe Biden wins it. He is president in a state that matters so much. The i mad at you vote matters. And so we come back out and look, were also getting it. Kalamazoo again, the urban areas that are important, you know, joe biden won this by 18 points in 2020. So again, in a place, you want to wrap the numbers come november. This is a place you want to run up the numbers to offset Donald Trumps rural strength. So you have some people you need to talk to. Thats what that tells you. Thats a good number, but in a democratic primary, you know, dean phillips is getting nothing here. Thats so thats not im looking for an alternative. Theres an alternative right there. Thats what im mad at. You vote for the most part, or you dont like phillips so one more quick point. Well switch to the Republicans Jonah was just talking about this and i think this is the fascinating debate as we go forward. At the moment, only 7 of the vote, lets be patient with the results. But nikki haley is not winning any counties. Donald trumps getting 64 of the vote. So the governor can clearly make the argument about a third of republicans here. Well see what that number ends up. But a third here. 40 of my home state of South Carolina, 43 in New Hampshire dont want donald trump. Shes right. The math supports that. However, thats winning, and thats getting the delegates 55 delegates at stake tonight 16 of them are supposed to be awarded based on the primary results but were gonna have to Republican Convention if you want to go to a place where the Republican Party, the trump effect election denial. That is completely destroyed. What used to be a strong functioning Republican Party go to state of michigan. I have two republican parties. Theyre fighting in court over which ones the real one. They will both of them will award delegates. Donald trump will probably get all of them and then theyll fight it out in court. It is interesting thing though, to consider the fact that tonight we really are interested in who is not voting for the person thats going to win, right . Who is not voting for donald trump, who is not voting for joe biden on the noncommitted because that exposes weaknesses for both men. Very interesting. Now were going to hear from republican president ial candidate nikki haley, who just, who is going to talk to dana bash. Shes obviously trying to overcome Donald Trumps dominant position in this race. Joining me now is governor nikki haley. Thank you so much for being on. I want to look at whats happening in michigan tonight, set expectations if you would, what are you hoping for when results are in in michigan . Well, obviously, our goal is to be as competitive as possible. Thats what this has always been. But look at whats happened in michigan. You look back in 2012, michigan was such a bright spot. I was there. They were they had just passed right to work. They were winning seats up and down the ticket. It was just a great time. Im from michigan. But ever since donald trump became president , theyve lost the governors mansion. Theyve lost the state house. Theyve lost the state senate. The same thing has happened in minnesota now, i was in colorado earlier today. They havent had a republican get over 45 statewide since donald trump was president in 20 16, it is a pattern we continue to see. Youre seeing the same thing, whether you look at all the early states, donald trump didnt get 40 of any of the republican primary vote. It is a problem. Is hes not bringing people into the party hes pushing people out of the Party Colorado today has 10 less republicans than they had before when donald was president. And so this is just a pattern we continue to see governor. I hear you sharpening even more your criticism against donald trump. But what about you . How do you want to do . Denied. We want to obviously we want to do well, i mean, thats the focus of this and all the Super Tuesday states is, lets just keep going and running through the tape as much as we can. I mean, i was, in minnesota this morning. I was in colorado this afternoon. Im now in utah. I mean, thats the goal is to try and hit as many Super Tuesday states we can, but look, donald Trump Campaigned in michigan for eight years. I campaign for two days. So our goal has been to try and reach as many people as we can, but we know hes got the advantage in that but more than that, what were trying to tell everyone, whether its in michigan, whether its the Super Tuesday states coming forward, is look at what has happened first, youve got donald trump. He cant win a General Election look at the marquette poll. It showed recently, hes margin of error. I defeat joe biden by 18 points, but more than that, look at whats happened to the Republican Party. The Republican Party is now not just changing based on tone. Its changing based on policy like what . No longer is there any talk about fiscal responsibility that used to be a pillar for the Republican Party, yet youve got donald trump who put Us 8 Trillion in debt more than any other president. Youve got republicans now who opened up earmarks and pet projects again in Congress Passing through 7,000 of them last year, Donald Trumps not talking anything about shrinking government stopping spending, cutting out the waste. None of that. And then hes changed the whole idea of peace through strength we used to always talk about the strength of our alliances. Now youve got donald trump basically saying hes going to tell putin to go and invade our allies whose durbin us after 911, its all a shift and governor given what you just said, which is which is all a factually accurate about where the party is and isnt a word, donald trump is, i should say, given the fact that he is one so handily, the first four major contests isnt it possible that the party has moved and the party is about donald trump and not what youre describing, which might be the party of yesterday it is very possible and thats what were doing is if 70 of americans say they dont want donald trump or joe biden we are giving them an option. What im saying to my Republican Party family is were in a ship with a hole in it and we can either go down with the ship and watch the country go socialist left, or we can see that we need to take the life raft and move in a new direction. Thats what this is about. It is very telling when now the rnc is not about winning races up and down the ticket, the rnc is now about donald trump. They made that very clear now, thats become his legal slush fund. Do we not see whats happening here . And this is the issue dana, of all of this the reason i fight is for my kids and your kids. Because look at what our kids have been through. Theyve gone through covid. They look at the fact that theres 34 trillion in debt. They dont know what that means for them. They dont know how theyre going to get a job. They dont know how theyre going to make ends meet. They dont know if theyll ever be able to afford a home. And their award about war breaking out. And then we wonder why theres so much stress, anxiety, and depression. Its because our country is in a tent of anger and hatred and division. Theres nothing normal about the chaos that joe biden and donald trump have given us and our kids deserve to know normal. Can you imagine a country or a family could sit down . Im for dinner and not have a political fight. Can you imagine someone being able to go to work and say what they think without worrying about being demoted. Can we imagine a country where we could strongly disagree but not hate each other thats where im trying to go and thats what im saying to the Republican Party. Angela, the American Public is this is a ship that is what is it say about your pardon me. Have gotten that. Theres up and start Going Forward. What does it say about your party that with respect theyre not buying what youre selling, given the results that weve seen so far. Weve only seen a handful of states vote. I mean, look, ive said this before as much as the media wants to jump ahead were taking this one state one day at a time. Thats what this is about. You know, if i got out when you were talking about it earlier, New Hampshire South Carolina, whenever it would be the longest General Election, race in president ial history. Still if i got out today, itd be the longest General Election race in history. America is blessed to be a democracy let people vote. Now in the next week, were going to watch 20 states and territories vote. Lets let that happen governor, we are blessed to live in a country where hopes still reigns and we need to look for that. Hope. We need to look for that america, we want our kids to have, and we need to fight for evan and im going to fight for it every step of the way before i let you go on that note youre committing that you are going to be in this race through Super Tuesday im aware in all the Super Tuesday states now, thats what this is all about, is making sure that we hit every state and led oh, yeah. No. Look, there is a voice out there for you. There is a way out. Yes, we are fighting through. Yes. Yes. Unequivocally, urine through Super Tuesday absolutely. Add we have a country to save absolutely. Okay. Governor nikki haley. Thank you so much for joining us this evening. Thanks so much and we are awaiting more results in both parties president ial primaries in michigan. And were getting closer to our first chance to make projections. Com, United States of scandal with jake tapper. Sunday, a nine on cnn and we got another key race alert for you right now with more actual votes coming in in the Michigan Republican primary with 8 of the estimated vote in Donald Trumps still in the lead with 63 of the vote, 70,964 votes. Hes almost 35,000 votes ahead of nikki haley, who has 32. 3 of the vote, or a total right now of 36,014 votes, thats what 8 of the estimated vote in. Now on the democratic side and come at present but in joe biden is in the lead with 78. 4 of the vote, 75,967 votes. Thats a little bit more than 60,000 votes. Again, ahead of uncommitted uncommitted, many of these we believe to be protest votes because of bidens support for israel during the israelhamas war, uncommitted has 16. 4 of the vote. Thats almost 16,000 votes. Congressman dean phillips has 2. 6 of the vote. Thats 2,521 votes ten of the estimated vote in. If that trend continues, thats going to be a pretty sizable, Uncommitted Vote theoretically, lets go now to cnns kylie atwood in solid lake city, utah. Nikki haley is campaigning there for next weeks Super Tuesday contests, one week from today, kylie, what is haley looking for in the results out of michigan this evening . Well, listen, you heard it there in that interview with dana that nikki haley is not being super specific in terms of what you would like to see in michigan. She said, of course the campaign would like to do well, they would like to see a competitive result, but not defining what that would mean. And i think nikki haleys campaign and has set at time and time again that they are sticking with it through Super Tuesday. So really were focused on what this week looks like for her and what she will be able to do in terms of getting voters on her side in those Super Tuesday states ahead of that critical date for her a week from today. But one interesting thing, jake, that ive been told by a campaign an official is that the Haley Campaign isnt only looking at the results tonight on the republican side in the michigan primary, there also looking at the results on the democratic side because they believe that if there is a high number of Uncommitted Voters that that could demonstrate a potential weakness for biden with certain voting blocs. Now, i spoke with one Campaign Official who said, obviously they dont expect that those voters were Voting Uncommitted are Fertile Ground for nikki haley. They opposed biden because of his position on the israelhamas war. Haleys position on that isnt all that different. So it wouldnt attract those as voters, but its interesting because theyre trying to look at bidens weaknesses right now as they are talking about haley being a better overall contender in the General Election against biden as she has been tried to go after trump and his electability saying that if he were the actual candidate on the democratic, on the republicans side, it would be suicide for the party saying that earlier today, jake. All right, kylie atwood covering the nikki Haley Campaign and Salt Lake City utah, anderson. Jake, thanks so much back for the team here in new york. David axelrod, how big a deal is it for the Biden Campaign, this Uncommitted Vote . Well, listen, michigan is going to be very, very close. Its going to be a marginal race. And so it matters if people are expressing themselves in way that, ways that might suggest theyre going to walk away. Id caution however drunk, too much of a point on this because were eight months away. From this election and its one thing to register your discontent with the president in a primary, its another thing in a race against donald trump. And Governor Whitmer was on with dana on sunday. And she pointed out that Donald Trumps relationship with the arab American Community, with the muslim some community is pretty checkered and that people are gonna have to think about that choice. She said a vote for uncommitted today is a vote for donald trump. Obviously, there were a fair number of people who wanted to make that vote and i would also stress, we saw the an arbor vote. This is an issue not just with the arab American Community, but its, its a mission its an issue with Younger Voters, which is a problem nationally for biden, motivating these Younger Voters and some African American voters. So i think this is clearly an issue. I think its one of the reasons why he was eager to say yesterday, he thought that a cease fire was within reach. Turner, you i was just there. People Vote Uncommitted. And why do you think thats not a vote for trump . Its not i mean, anderson, a vote for trump is a vote for trump. And i believe Governor Whitmer as being disingenuous, said bess lying at worse in terms of telling the voters in michigan that a vote for unclear knitted is a vote for donald j. Trump when donald j. Trump is not on the ballot. This is a primary and last time i checked, we often especially democrats, we talk about the democratic process, small d, and people being able to express themselves and a primary as a bedrock and then though they tried to guilt those voters to not Vote Uncommitted when that is an option that they have on the michigan ballot. I was just in dearborn on sunday. I was what congresswoman to leave at a free palestine Cease Fire Event hundreds of people in that room, i got a chance to talk to some individual and they are really upset and some wheel, i know some of this has been the points have been made, but some people are willing to just let donald j. Trump win and theyre point is this is not that they want him to when theyre not jumping up and down for him. But what they are saying is that donald j. Trump is not lording over the slaughter of innocent people in the gaza. There are babies that were born after october the seventh, who were born and took a few breaths and died. People cant get hospital care. So this is really palpable in the corner, you know, i mean, i think that trues i mean, to both david and ninas point, that you have to to give some credibility more than some credibility, you have to give credibility to the passion that many of these voters are coming out with that are voting i committed the fact remained. There are few things. One, this president has been working diligently towards a ceasefire. He has been working diligently towards humanitarian aid in those things have to be recognized and maybe its the job of messaging from the white house. We know he just came out recently saying that this was something that can happen in the upcoming weeks but the fact still remains that this is if you look at the results from tonight, and i think back to 2012, david knows this better than i do. But in 2012, there were about 20,000 people that came out and Vote Uncommitted a for barack obama and he still won over mitt romney, whos a native of michigan by nine points. And so while i do believe that there are certain changes that have to be made from this white house. This is not anything that you need to put your blinkers on or throw your hands up and say, oh, my god, this is something that is going to change the trajectory of the race because at the end of the day and i think nina will agree with me on this voting Voting Uncommitted today is an exercise of your little capabilities and your little d, democratic values. But its totally different than voting for donald trump in november. And i think that this, i do not equate the two to be the same and i disagree with Governor Whitmer on that, but i will say that i will say that this tonight does not give me any heartburn for joe biden. The heartburn that people should feel is that for donald trump because there are a third of the people, 40 of the people who are out really rejecting donald trump. Again, we see it again and again and again. And every single primary, he has the problem. Republicans have the problem democrats do not so i seen a bit both ways and listen, we knew 6. 10 americans didnt want this rematch of Trump Versus Biden in the reality is both candidates have major vulnerabilities with core demographics, they need to win with biden is young progressives at some of the black community, some of the arab American Community with donald trump, its women, its women in the suburbs. If people, its people with a College Degree you just its really going to be a matter of who can message in these Course Swing States were by the way, donald trump is ahead and all of them at this, at this state today, which is a snapshot in time, whos going be able to message better to say you need to be with me when the election comes down in an interesting fact point, just as we talk about the issue with gaza, is there are quite a few moderate republicans who are inclined to vote for someone other than donald trump and who could be one over by joe biden. But if joe biden goes too far and pulling support away from israel, you also could risk losing those moderates votes. So its a delicate dance that has to do what are you looking for today . I think that were heading towards a really competitive race. Come november the states up for grabs. The real clear politics averages showing that race a little over five points in favor of donald trump currently, all the polls that would come back have shown him up. Im looking at some of the most populous counties in the state. Were waiting for the results come in inside of mean. Obviously, looking at oakland, you have flint, michigan, and Genesee Grand grand rapids in kent. The results will come in and marquette, which is an area that democrats perform well in saginaw, has predicted the winner statewide. Every race since 1992, and is a Boomerang Pivot County where you have obama obama, trump, biden so well see what happens inside these most populous counties. And as bakari was pointing out, and are you with me . I dont know how feel about this. Well, listen, i career. When you, when you dig deeper into the results to get a measure of where import is of, of both parties. Alyssa was talking about this as well. Theres a gender gap, but its not as big as maybe President Biden would want. The poland. Most recent polling thats come out and shows a closer race amongst women then i think President Biden would want college age voters. President biden won by 17 votes. Most recent polling is showing it closer, more like six. Independence was won by President Biden, but the current polling is showing President Trump op right now. So digging deep into these most populous counties and seeing whats going on inside the Democratic Party. I think my advice to both campaigns this is Campaign Like youre scared Campaign Like youre behind. Well, they think both parties will get to take away. The other thing to keep in mind is the gop in michigan is at war with itself right now, there are two people claiming to be the chair of the party. Theyre having dueling conventions on saturday. Its like a complete mess. But on the numbers, nikki haley was correct in her point there saying that the republicans in michigan have not done well, talking about what that looks like. But on these numbers as were watching the Uncommitted Vote come in, which obviously the white house is paying close attention to the 10,000 was ridiculously low. Bar is David Chalian pointed out, but theyre already at 15,000 with only 10 coming in. We could easily see this getting up to closer to 100,000. The question for the white house and do those voters come home in november just minutes from now, the last Polling Places close. Lets go back to Jake In Dc Thanks Anderson were going to get a fuller picture of how President Biden is fairing tonight as he faces, not only long shot challenger congressman dean phillips, but also that protest vote for uncommitted. Thats being urged by democrats who are pushing for a permanent ceasefire in the israelhamas war and also pushing for for the us to cut all military aid to israel in the republican primary, donald trump is looking for another decisive victory over nikki haley to extend his winningstreak and to bring him closer to amassing the delegates, he needs to lock up the gop president ial nomination. Lets go over to john king now at the magic wall, john more votes coming in. Where are they coming in from . The starting to get a good scattering across the state, which makes it interesting. You get to see rural areas as pop up here. Kolkovska county, rural area. Donald trump on this county by 40 points. So this is not something joe biden is worried about come november republicans going to win this, but youre just trying to see is the Uncommitted Vote is high in these Rural Counties we dont have as many democrats. You tend to have more conservative democrats. If you do have them there. But yeah, so at 07 40, 5 up on these tiny Rural Counties. But then you come down, its still at 16 statewide nearing 17,000 votes. And so we did get since last few visited our first votes from wayne county, just want to caution you, its a tiny this is one precinct, probably a sample facing. But still 23 right there. That to me is the question of the night what is that percentage and what is that number in wayne county because this is ground zero, if you will, of the Discontent Dearborn is right over here to the west of detroit inside detroit, the liberal basis, matt about this policy on the wayne state campus, theyre mad about this ill see this to me is ground zero. And if you want to run up the number of statewide, this is where you would do it. So you come out and look, just you start to move around kalamazoo again, youre moving west. Youre getting out. Its almost 19 , but again, very early numbers. So lets be careful. So look, you have a very formidable front runner on the democratic side. Hes not going to be beat joe biden is going to be the nominee. The question is to challenge has always bring the base home or bring the voters who are against you home. Those are voters. Theyre not voting for anybody else, but theyre mad at him. And its the same issue. Same issue. There were just talking about this in new york on The Other Side, if you come over here democrats would say thats a bigger deal, right . 32 of your party is voting against the former president then donald trump, in a state that has been absolutely critical to his success and to his failure in 2020. So both front runners have a challenge. Both are winning quite comfortably, but both have a Problem Bleeding in their own party if you will. A third, just shy of a third of republicans theyre saying we dont like donald trump. So lets look here where this is coming in. Oakland county. This one here 32 . Again, how do you want to read that, right . In a suburban county that has trended democratic come november. Is that a good sign for donald trump . Well those are voters. Joe bidens go to target right there, right republicans in the suburbs who dont want to vote for donald trump, Macomb County, blue collar, you know, back in the 1980s, this was the whole reagan democrat thing. Donald trump beat joe biden in Macomb County last time. This is a big test that that United Auto Workers endorsement for President Biden. Hes meeting with the teamsters coming up. This is a union places the blue collar place and you see the difference, right in a blue collar place thats thats Donald Trumps wheelhouse. Hes getting a better number in macomb than he does over and oakland suburbanites more blue collar. You see right there how donald trump has literally rewritten, remade the Republican Party. As you come through it. If you come out, i just want to look as you start moving out of the state, nothing different. Grand rapids yet thats im interested in that just because of how much it factors in republican turnout. But as youre trying to move west here, you know, nikki, this is only 11 , but in the more rural areas, trump is stronger, but youre still youre still a little bleeding in your base. So again, you look at the haley number there and you look at the uncommitted number here and what you see is joe biden is going to win michigan tonight. Donald trumps going to win michigan tonight. Most likely you see the numbers coming in. Youre waiting for a few more votes before you can call that race. But as you do so, this is what winters smart winter does every time i won, but wheres my weakness . For joe biden . Its right there. And for donald trump, is that nikki haley, jake is still getting at least three in ten or more republican votes. All right. John, the last Polling Places are just about to close and the Michigan Democratic and republican primaries, President Biden, looking to beat back a protest vote while donald trump is aiming for another when that catapults tim towards closer towards a rematch with biden. Or we can now make some important projections. Cnn is projecting now the donald trump will win the mission she can republican president ial primary. This will be his fifth straight major victory of the primary season. And another loss for nikki haley as she persists in her fight against trump, despite his growing advantage in the allimportant hunt for delegates, which is of course what is needed to win the gop president ial nomination again, cnn projecting donald trump will win the republican primary in michigan, teeing up a blockbuster Super Tuesday contest next week, cnn can also project the president , joe biden will win the Michigan Democratic primary, continuing his march for his second president ial nomination. And once again, defeating his longshot opponent, congress chrisman dean phillips. But we are still watching the size of a protest vote in michigan. Some Michigan Democrats are voting for uncommitted specific typically to show their opposition to the president s policy on the israelhamas war. Many of them pushing for a permanent ceasefire and urging the United States to cut military aid to the state of israel. Lets go look at the vote right now for joe biden with 10 of the estimated vote put President Joe Biden, the incumbent, has 78. 5 of the vote that is 83,828 votes, about 66 thousands, of votes ahead of uncommitted, which has 16, 42 of the vote. Were looking at the wrong number though really, of uncommitted note number tonight and its 17,289. Dean phillips, two points seven of the vote, bringing up the rear and dana if we look at 20,000 as the floor for uncommitted because we know in every president ial primary in recent heres there has been 20,000 people have just voted uncommitted, right . There are feisty bunch in michigan, i suppose it with democratic side and republican side, at least 20,000 Vote Uncommitted. So were looking for a number above that. It looks pretty clear that theyre going to hit that and maybe exceeded wellbeing on their own expectations which is why Governor Whitmer of michigan told me on sunday why the senior senator from michigan, Debbie Stabenow told kasie hunt today that they really didnt know how it was going to end up, what they did see. And we dont we still dont know how its going to end up. But what they are seeing is a very packed actually knit effort to send President Biden a message and i think that we should really underscore the idea that thats what theyre trying to do. And we talked about this a little bit earlier. They genuinely are trying to affect policy. Are there some people who just dont like joe biden who might stay home in november absolutely. But those people probably are staying home today as well. And so the question is whether or not given the fact that President Biden has already shifted in his rhetoric and in his approach to israel, whether or not if they do send get the numbers to send that message, how much of an effect will it have . Yeah, the one senior Michigan Democratic source that ive been speaking with tonight says this is actually higher than they expected in terms of the Uncommitted Vote, well see how high it gets, but this does appear likely to exceed probably the closest thing we get compared to his in 2012, an incumbent democratic president against a republican 20,000 votes, just over 20,000. The Uncommitted Votes here, that is almost certainly going to pass here in surpassed this. The question, as you mentioned, how do the people who were leading this effort . What do they end up in november . I had a chance to ask what she did tlaib whos of course, leading also this push to shes bianca minute vote. Shes, of course, palestinian american, someone who has been a very aggressive opponent of the way that this war has been waged in the president s handling of it. I said, will you support Joe Biden In November she did not respond to that question. And thats going to be the big question for the Biden Campaign. Can you win some of these people back when its not uncommitted on the balari, its biden versus trump. I mean, the difference from 2012, of course, is that theres an organized Campaign Effort here for uncommitted that wasnt present in 2012, run by russia to leave sister . Yeah. Exactly. And so i do think theres always a danger of us overinterpreting this. Theres theres no doubt about that. Theres also no doubt to your point, dana, that this is what a protest looks like. This is what protest is. This is a push for a Policy Change the other X Factor Guys that we do not know sitting here today wheres the israel hamas situation going to be in august in september, in october, when people are voting, is it going to be as fresh for everyone who is voting today in the democratic primary in michigan. Then as it is now, thats an unknown thing. Of course, what you do know, and obviously biden is responding to it, is that this is just one piece of a coalition that is not as unified united and back in full force as it wasnt 2020 when he got elected this is one piece of it. Young voters, progressives that were seeing in various demographic slices. Joe biden and his operation are keenly aware across the board, they are not performing at the same levels with some key constituencies that they need to be at, not just in michigan, but in a whole slew of these Battleground States. And this is what we learn on a night like this. It is what the work they need to do to bring that back together for the fall yes. I agree with all of that. And part of the problem that biden has is he has a much bigger coalition. Than donald trump does. Trump is a very focused, narrow coalition, deeply committed. Its stronger, but its smaller. Bidens is larger, but its weaker. And the various components of it, theyre all vying to sort of get primacy in inside the coalition do think you can overread theres a certain bias in this and its not an ideological bias. Its that this is the thing to talk about. This is the thing that is happening that is filling the oxygen of the story. And theres something of day that i talked about the other day on ip is that if if the situation were reversed and biden went the other way and became all in on the Rashida Tlaib position. How many votes would he lose . How many uncommitted would we be seeing voting for the proisrael position . Because i still believe the issue of israels more popular that israel is more support in the state of michigan generally than the palestinian version of it. And so its, its you when you look at these people, you think about whos the most committed to the palestinian cause, which is an understandable thing to be of course, theyre going to be Voting Uncommitted, but theres really no price. Theyre paying for doing anything. Theres not, theres no cost in doing this. These are the people who are showing up. And so i do think you can overinterpret it simply because its the thing that were all talking about. No, of course. But i think one of the things that the Arab American and Muslim American community launching this protest is saying is not necessarily were going to vote for trump in november, not necessarily even were not im going to vote in november, but look how many of us there are who care about this issue. Donald trump won michigan in 2016 by 10,000 votes. Joe biden won it by 154,000 votes. Four years later there are a lot of us, we can swing an election if you dont Pay Attention to us more seriously. And remember, he has sent aides to visit with the Arab American and Muslim American communities in michigan. He himself has not gone. Lets go to john king right now and were still watching the vote come in. Theres 11 of the estimated vote in joe biden still in the lead, 78. 4 uncommitted, 17,866, 17th thousand, 872 votes. John king. And so well go through the numbers in the context of the conversation you were just having because i think jonah framed it actually vary quite well there and the idea of what percentage of these people, 16 thats a lot. Well see how it conceal it goes, is that i commit, you know, what percentage of them are saying im mad at you, mr. President , im mad at your policy and it directly affects me in the case of the Arab Americans and Muslim Americans and effective likes me and my family. How much of them are just mad tonight and how much of them or lets call them never biden, right . They are American News was trying to run a campaign saying abandon biden. They mean abandon him. In november as well. Dont just Vote Uncommitted. Said so whats the how much of that last right there. So thats the question of the democratic side. And its the very same question. On The Other Side because about a third, little less than that right now, voting against donald trump in michigan tonight, a state that was absolutely critical to him in 2016, it was absolutely essential to biden 2020. What percentage of that comes home . Maybe reluctantly becomes home to the Republican Party. And what percentage of that isnt never trump if youre the never, then youre available to the other person. At least at least a thought is available. Thats the part we dont know, and thats the conversation Going Forward. So the headline is donald trump. You mentioned at the top of the hour just look at that. Just look at that. This is the republican contest so far, the Virgin Islands down here as well. And so if you look at this right now, donald trump, like him or not, has every right to make the case im waiting in the heartland. Im running in the heartland again. I want to new england, i want in the south, i went out west by convincing margins. Im going to be the republican nominee. Everyone including governor haley, should recognize the fact that will be his argument. Of course, she makes the argument know a third more of the party keeps voting against him. They need a voice. Im going to stay in a week from tonight when you have a bunch of states were going to Super Tuesday, i think will be probably the last defining test of that. If youre the democratic president , youre saying, okay, dean phillips made some noise tonight, uncommitted is going to make some noise and yes, i understand. I have some repair work to do, but im an incumbent democrat and im marching to the nomination. The issue is this state is so important and so yes, we should not overstate whats happening tonight, but we also understand how important this state has been in recent president ial history. And so thats your base, right . Thats your base. And one of the things im waiting for, we still dont have. This is just one precinct. This is going to tell us a lot more about how we should shape this conversation, how serious we should be about that uncommitted number at the end of the night wayne county has detroit, the africanamerican democratic base, the wayne state young voters base dearborn just out to the west and the suburbs. That is your Muslim American, arab america and Middle Eastern democratic base. Its 300,000 votes in the state. A lot of them right here. They were for joe biden in 2020 when you win a state by in that year, come back to 2020. Lets look at the president ial race. When you went to state my hundred and 54,000 votes, you can lose 20,000, you can lose 30,000, but ill make this point. You cant lose a big slice of your base because you see that number, donald trump lost michigan in 2020. Look at that 2. 64 million in 2016. He wanted with 2. 2 million, donald trump got more votes in several of the Battleground States in 2020 than he did in 2016 when he won them the democrats just turned up more votes. Byd was more successful with young voters, more successful with Arab Americans, more successful in the suburbs. And anderson. So thats the challenge the two front runners are going to win tonight. We know that the question is, how deep are the weaknesses and were going to be looking at that very closely. Lets get his neck. Jeff zeleny in dearborn, michigan right now he is at an event for democratic advocates of that protest, vote for uncommitted. So jeff, what is the feeling there about about how the process is going . What what level of protests do they expect to see . Im a jewish guy from detroit, right . For this event began with a moment of silence for all children who slain in gaza. After that, it really erupted in applause. You can hear congressman andy levin is on the stage, right now. A lot of offering. A roadmap. She says, this is this is again, that is the sentiment that we are getting here. At the Adonis Restaurant and middle Eastern Restaurant in dearborn, the heart of american communities. So karen, michigan, lets say sense that they have already won regardless of revolts, they been gotten President Bidens attention they have said they are just going to go forward with this. They said they plan to pressure him over but this uncommitted and kila for here that we can do not ending yet, we build a more beautiful, very much back with it. The team here in new york. Do you have a sense . I mean, we did hear from President Biden, i think it was just yesterday saying that his National Security adviser hadnt seemed to indicate that there was movement on a potential ceasefire or prolonged prolonged cessation that was not echoed certainly by the palestinian side, or even officials in israel. Yeah, look, i dont know exactly what happened there. The fact that he was standing there in an Ice Cream Parlor with an ice cream no well with, seth meyers yeah. But its suggested to me that he was maybe going out on his own on that one, that he wasnt that he probably because he understood that this was going on, but i dont know. It could be that that was a plan play. It seemed like a weird place to do it. If it wasnt, i bet you there was some heavy gasps of exasperations and the National Security council . Yes. Yeah, exactly. Into a pillow. And it is i think it was very spontaneous, obviously, that wasnt something that was a planned moment. Reporters just shout questions. Did he answers . But it is different than how theyve handled the last ceasefire that happened the white house was so careful to talk about it until it was actually official because weve seen them come close to having a ceasefire. And then for it to fall apart. And so ro khanna, a congressman whos been in michigan stumping for biden, who previously had not called for a ceasefire, is now calling for one. He said he he did believe that that was intended to try to blunt this momentum towards the Uncommitted Vote tonight. But i mean, i just think about, i mean, you talked about a snapshot in time and i nina was talking about the process playing out and we still have 89 months. Yeah. And so i mean, if this president is able to continue to work towards humanitarian aid for gaza, we know that donald trump has cut 200 million in aid aid to palestine at this presence, able to secure the hostages if hes able to actually land a cessation of a fire in the middle east and still continuously advocate for a twostate solution. Then you have a different playing phil between now and then what these voters are doing is raising their voices and saying this is an issue that matters to us tonight. This theres an issue that matters to us tomorrow, and the white house needs to listen and i think the white house is listening to that message. But, you know, this, if hes able to reel off these successes than this, then tonight actually will be a success for all and youll have a different outcome come november because ill pass it to nina or whomever can help me understand this. But i dont think for many voters who are voting on committed that theyre going to Vote Uncommitted and then say donald trump is my choice. I think this is i think this is more complicated than that. Yeah, i do agree with you, bakari. I mean, no one that i interface with say that they wanted to vote for donald j. Trump, how there is a however here. And i think sometimes as we talk about this issue, were making, were centering President Biden. We are centering former president donald j. Trump when the uncommitted efforts is the center of the people closest to the pain and that is the arab American Community, that is the Palestinian Community that is communities that care about peace. And so while this president isnt, it was in the Ice Cream Shop saying, i think theres going to be a ceasefire 30,000 people have been slaughtered. People are living in famine. They cant get medical care, so it cant come soon enough for them. And that was really the weight that i picked up on when i was in dearborn. So we get to be comfortable and talk about this these, people are widgets when they are in fact suffering, and i am young enough to remember colleagues when congresswoman Rashida To Leap and also congresswoman cori bush, call for ceasefire very early on. They were called abhorrent now fast forward to all of these bodies land in the wake. And people who are living through this every single day but theres also been slaughter in israel is going to say, yet know, a lot of pain on both sides. Know im not im not lecture on the problem problem. No, im not talking about the politics of this tonight. How what to you would be a victory as somebody who was calling you have this Uncommitted Vote. What to you would be a victory tonight to get that message is, im not denying that pain. All im saying that at a certain point after october 7 it becomes clear. I mean, you have a rightwing Prime Minister. We dont need to fight. What do you understand was how im not denying anybodys paying what i am saying is that this president and our country has the power to say to netanyahu we need a permanent ceasefire. The only thing im if i can only wait one more point, the only time hostages were released is when we had that brief ceasefire. That is another reason why i also have to remind people we had a ceasefire prior october 7, right . I mean, thats a point and i i get sintering people and i completely understand that, but i think anderson, your point is valid as well, that there is a lot of pain to go around and we cannot forget that what im talking about, a tangible solutions thats what, thats what im. And as we look at because we can, we can debate and talk about this on a level of humanity which we cannot forget but we also have to look at the results from tonight. And what im saying is that there are tangible results. This white house can deliver. And i think theyre able to deliver not they ms then you have a totally different scenario. Is the reality, if i may briefly defend joe biden, there hasnt been a day since october 7 that he hasnt been working around the clock, has National Security council because State Department with the qataris, with the Israeli Government to try to come to egypt. Pasta mean he thinks the president is also the president of mexico, but they do, they do have a massive Messaging Problem though they have allowed this this sort of discontent with young progresses to take so much steam that youre seeing it play out in real time and a problem that they might run into if this is something that ends up being, you know . Upwards of 50,000 votes tonight are other states going to fall or theyre going to be other organizing efforts in primaries to show that they wont be with biden unless they see a change in the uncommitted can pain. Yeah, its going to go i mean, ive been told that that campaign is going to go into other states and congressman on the republican side, i mean, is it right now its 30. I dont i dont have the were looking at if its 30 for haley is what message does that send it, this is a large gap. And going on to Super Tuesday, theyre showing poles coming back where President Trumps up by 40 points, 50 points hes on pace to have a very big night on next tuesday, and i would just say its something thats really important for and really both parties, all parties to Pay Attention to this conversation were having october 7. And whats happened since has been the highest profile issue that can be a motivator but whats really important, digging deeper, the arabAmerican Community, just like all americans are concerned about other issues. So if you live in wayne county, youre cost of housing is higher than the state average. Youre concerned about the cost of groceries, you have the un American Dream of being able to afford your first home. You might be concerned about crime just as much as your neighbor. And the, the underlying issues really, by the way, for any any group we talk about, its important whether you are President Trumps Campaign Manager, youre President Bidens Campaign Manager that you understand what else is motivated . Getting all these people and why is it that they are responding as much the call . Because if they were if they were happy with President Biden across the board, other than this issue . I dont think that we would be seeing a number like this one. What did i dont know about that . When i mean, i think that youre going to see an elevated vote in those communities and its very much related but to this issue and so the question is, how much more elevated is that Uncommitted Vote in those communities . I suspect its going to be much higher but i just have to one last word on this, nina, you mentioned the ceasefire and the last cease fire. That last cease fire happened in part because the president pushed for that ceasefire. Hes clearly trying to use his leverage to bring this ceasefire about. And like i im one who i was appalled and personally wounded by what happened on october 7. And i weep for the kids in gaza as well. I dont think you can you can hold both thoughts at once, but i do believe i dont think that hes not green these activities, clearly trying to pressure the israelis on this no doubt about it. October 7, horrible should never have happened. You dont kill innocent people. No way knowhow. There is a point and i want to go back to some of the car congressman said, i think these issues are intertwined. I dont think theyre mutually exclusive. I think to the extent that you have people who are burdened with domestic challenges, what is happening overseas as a reflection of that anxiety that we are having here. My only point is that being on the ground and talking to people when youre person who has lost a Family Member on on either side, youre saying relief cannot come soon enough, and that is something that we should not forget. Lets come back to jake in dc. Jake, thanks, anderson lets bring you a key race alert because we have more votes coming and on the democratic side, President Joe Biden, the incumbent, with an estimated 13 of the vote in has 79. 1 of the vote. Thats 106,100 27 votes. Thats 85,391 votes ahead of uncommitted uncommitted has 15. 5 of the vote. Thats 20,700 grid and 21, whats significant about this . We should note is that every primary, there are about 20,000 votes for committed on the democratic side. And the republican side, every primary so theyve hit the floor of 20,000 with only 13 of the estimated vote in, meaning the uncommitted is going to have a night like we havent seen in a long, long time on the republican side, michigan in the republican primary Murray Donald trump, and the lead with 65. 9 of the vote, 123,790 votes. Thats more than 67,000 votes ahead of nikki haley at 56,049. She has slipped down under 30 now with 29. 8 of the vote, thats again with fits 13 of the estimated vote in john king. We should know, yes, there was in 2008 because the michigan Democratic Party had when it against the rules. So he all hilary clint was the only one that was in the contents contests. So edwards voters in obama voters voted noncommitted. This is different than that that was a lot of uncommitted. This is different than that uncommitted. We dont know how many of the people voting on committed are voting as a protest of President Bidens support for israel in the way that netanyahu is waging the war against hamas and gaza. But if we consider 20,000 to be the floor, we can extrapolate out that theyre going to have an a night like weve never seen for a protest vote in michigan. Right. And so you have two things can be true at once. President bidens gavin overwhelming victory and President Biden is going to have a very important challenge. For the people who Vote Uncommitted, because most of them theres an organized campaign to get people to vote on committed. So as that number rise, as you can attribute that to the success, especially again, we dont have any votes yet. Were stuck here. Weve got a few more votes from wayne county, a little bit more. So lets see, still only one thats still only 1 . So if that number stays at 11 in wayne county, then the Biden Campaign hes saying not a big deal. I suspect that number is going to grow when you get more from not only from detroit, but from dearborn, which again were jeff zeleny is thats the center of the arbor merrick community in michigan is in dearborn. We dont have enough votes yet to make that calculation, but the two points thing as thats a big win in a very important state. However, that shows you, you have trouble with your base, and how big is that trouble . How permanent is some of that trouble . How many of these people is the conversations i would say are saying, im mad at your policy, mr. President , i want you to know that, and i want more meetings with your team. You may think you made a key point. They have they understand now a lot of Michigan Democrats will tell you they were late to understand, but they have been out there the campaign, the National Security team youll see the president , the Vice President getting out there. Youll see about there, but how much of that is were just mad at you. Wed like some attention and wed like to policy to change and well see if the policy does change or if theyre improvements on the ground there, that what percentage though there are some who say is a matter of principle . Theyre saying that now elections eightandahalf months away but they say, i wont do it. I cant i cannot vote for joe biden because of what he didnt standing by, netanyahu. Again, there are haley voters coming out of the poll saying, i cannot vote for donald trump, i wont have over donald trump its not that they dont mean it today. The question is in time most people tend to go back to their partisan home, come november, especially in a consequential election. But ill raise a point. We havent talked about tonight, not only not only will you have, do they go, the republicans go back to trump and well just show the number shes shy of 30 . And to the uncommitted is go back to biden. One of the thirdparty options in michigan. What are the third party . Is there somebody there you can go to in the last the last two president ial elections have been so close. In 2020, the Third Party Candidates did not make the impact that they did in 2016 that doesnt mean they wont in 2024, as we see, Robert Kennedy jr. Corn out, were getting on at least three or four ballots. Cornell west saying that hills have some progress to talk about there in a couple of weeks or so, we need to watch that in a place where you have people who are mad at their front runner. Did they come home . Do they stay home or do they find someplace else that would be the third party. One other quick zero point about trump as we have this conversation. Thats a Pretty Healthy lead, right . Thats what 36 points. I suspect it could grow. I would be wrong if haley runs up big numbers here, we dont have any votes in wayne county yet, not a ton of republicans in wayne county, detroit in the suburbs out. But there are republicans there. So she has a chance to run at the numbers there. But you see all this blank gray this is rural michigan, right up in the mit, up in the mitten as they say, just look this is where donald trump gets 72. This is where donald trump gets 77. This is where donald trump gets 60. This is where donald trump gets 72 in most of these and most of this Donald Trumps going to run it up. So you see a 66 percentage for him right now unless she makes up some ground down here in detroit in the suburbs right around it that percentage could actually grow. Yeah. Could you bring up the democratic results again because its such an excellent point. You just raised because theres been a lot of talk about thirdparty candidates, like Robert Kennedy jr. Getting a lot of attention. But as you know the real risk is on bidens left his left flank and whether it is cornell west or someone jill stein, someone like that running a very Clear Campaign against israel in favor of palestinian rights against biden. We dont know how many of these people are were going to then vote third party. But it could be a lot. And tonight for the protest, vote for the uncommitted people. This is a flexing their muscles and showing the Biden Campaign. Look how many of us there are. This is michigan you will either win michigan or lose michigan based on how you act towards us. Thats the message they are trying to send i want to go to David Chalian right now for a second, just to get an update on the delegate count, because obviously this is at the end of the day a rage its for delegates, david . Yes, jake. So we are able to start allocating some of the delegates on the democratic side based on the vote already coming in. So there are 100 delegates at stake tonight in michigan on the democratic side, you see there in the upper righthand corner joe biden now has 20 seven delegates. We have 90 delegates that are so far unallocated. Dean phillips has zero delegates. If you look at delegates to date in the democratic contest, youll see that joe biden has 118 delegates to dean phillips zero, the magic number, again up in the upper right hand border, 1,968 pledged delegates are needed for joe biden to secure the Democratic Partys nomination. Hes going to do that, folks its just early in the process and weve got many, many more contest to go. Hes at 118. How do we get to these delegate allocations on the democratic side . And in michigan, delegates are awarded proportionally. So you need at least 15 of the vote statewide oren, a Congressional District, to win delegates. And i do want to note, since were spending so much time talking about the Uncommitted Vote tonight. If uncommitted actually wins delegates, meaning they get to that 15 threshold statewide, or in a Congressional District those delegates will go to the convention in chicago unbound. They will not be bound to anybody. And obviously we will watch as the process plays out as to who those humans are. The delegates that go through a convention process and what they will do on the Convention Floor in chicago from the state of michigan, if indeed theyre there because of this Uncommitted Vote tonight jake all right, fascinating stuff. David chalian, so is it unfair of me to extrapolate that the 15 of the estimated vote in. And we have more than 20,000. Is it unfair for me to extrapolate wow. This number could get 80,000, 100,000 i dont think its unfair at all to extrapolate its kind of get significantly bigger. How bag just one quick point you know, a lot of gray up here, that means no votes yet, those are smaller Rural Counties says lot, lot, not a lot of math there. However, we have nothing yet, barely nothing. 1 of the vote from wayne county, which is by far the largest Population Center in the state. And by far the base of this anger at the president in detroit in dearborn, elsewhere around there. So without a doubt, that number is going to grow quite significantly without your percentages. Absolutely. If it continues to grow, if its if it stays consistent as more votes come in, if it stays around 15 or so, you bet its going to get up there and 100,000 sorry to interrupt, but 100,000 like joe biden won michigan with 154,000 votes. Donald trump in 2016 won michigan with roughly 10,000 votes. Those kinds of numbers really, really matter. Were standing for even more actual votes to come in from michigan tracking support for President Biden, democratic primary, and for the protest vote for uncommitted. Up. Next were going to talk to a key member of michigans congrats especially dont allegation who has been trying to warn the president for a long, long time. He has a problem in her state. Right now in michigan and donald trump has 66. 3 . Nikki haleys 29. 2 , or see joe biden with 79. 6 of the Vote Uncommitted, 14. 9 of its 20 3,142 people. And donald trump can see the 66. 3 to nikki haleys 29. 2 cnns Kristen Holmes is near maralago in west palm beach, florida covering the Trump Campaign. What are you hearing from the former president s team to me well, anderson right now, they are relative quiet. Just remember this was anticipated when he barely went to michigan since he announced his candidacy. He has only been to the state three times. Hes not even there tonight. Hes gone to every other state so far. Are primary or caucus night. Instead, hes just dialing into a watch party to give a call. Now thats because he will increasingly confident. But one thing that his team is going to use this race for is to really examine the data as it looks towards the General Election rematch with President Joe Biden. And one thing theyre going to particularly look for is those union voting households. Remember donald trump and his team are setting up a battle in 2024 for those working class voters that really helped propel trump to the white house in 2016. But favored biden back in 2020 now, part of that is driving a wedge between biden and organized labor. We saw donald trump in michigan last week week, he was talking about how migrants crossing the border was bad for workers and september ii, visiting nonunion shop during an auto workers strike, intentionally telling them that bidens policies on electric vehicles would again, hurt union jobs. I do want to give you latest polling that we have on this onion new household votings polling showed that trumps support fell and Union Households from 48 in 2016 to 37 in 2020. But they do believe that they can get some of these rank and File Union Members to come back towards donald trump. We know the United Auto Workers has endorsed joe biden, the teamsters though, has not yet endorsed. They met with donald trump last month led to mixed results. We heard some rankandfile members were happy. We also heard that executive board member called him a scab and an insurrectionist. So obviously this is a mixed effort. However, donald trump and his team believe its something they can work towards your shading. Kristen holmes, lets go to kylie atwood covering the nikki Haley Campaign from Salt Lake City, utah, one of the Super Tuesday states that haleys competing next week, kylie, what are you hearing tonight from their campaign . Yeah. Were hearing from the campaign for the First Time Since cnn has called the michigan primary for former President Donald Trump. And they are saying that the results coming out of michigan or a flashing warning sign for trump come november. This is something that they had been saying repeatedly. The faction of the Republican Party that is not voting for trump is a problem for him. I want to read you part of the statement from the campaign spokesperson, olivia perezcubas saying, quote, joe biden is losing about 20 of the democratic vote today. And many say its a sign of weakness in november, donald trump is losing about 35 of the vote. Thats a flashing warning sign for trump in november. So it should be noted that the campaign is pointing to the percentage vote that trump isnt getting instead of the percentage vote that nikki haley is getting here, were still waiting to see what the final results look like. But so far are there saying that 35 of the vote going away from trump is a bad thing for him. They were saying just earlier this week that 40 of the vote not going for him was a bad thing. So they appear to be moving the goalposts when it comes to how theyre measuring the success of their campaign in these early states. But this comes as nikki haley undeniably is heading into the most consequential week for her campaign to date, she has been saying that Super Tuesday is when more than 20 states will have voted, when all these americans will have cast her ballot, will just have to watch and see what happens there. But theyre saying that this is a problem for trump as she he has lost the michigan primary. Yeah. Thanks so much back with the team here in new york. Lets lets talk about the pursuit by both campaigns of working class voters who do you think it clearly donald trump believes he can make inroads on with union voters that even if the union is supporting biden, he believes rankin file. Well go for him well, i mean, we know that 2020 2. 20, 23 big years for summers of solidarities, winter of solidarity in terms of working class people and really, you talking about sending a message working class people across this country are sit in a strong message about the relief that they need some of the data points in terms of how the economy is doing, in terms of people who are inside the bubble, the economy is doing well because its doing well for people who have the greatest amount. But its not really doing well. Theres a disconnect between whats happening in the bubble and whats happening in the streets. And to the extent that both the former president and the current president are going to the fighting for those bolt bolts votes and its gonna be the tale of two stories. I think that yeah, i agree with that and i think this president , i mean, we talked about messaging, we talked about things like we just always harp on messaging, but there are a lot of successes that have come out of washington the question is one, when will those legislative successes actually benefit people in their pockets . When were they feel it . Thats 1. 21 of the things that it just me crazy when we talk about working class voters, particularly in the media, we usually refer to white folk and many people just overlook that there is a large swath of black and brown working class voters, usually, working class is code for whos working in a male and i, you or fly over country or michigan or wherever it may be. But there are a lot in particular, this is going to matter in places like wayne county this is going to matter in places like philadelphia, pennsylvania. This is going to matter in clark county, right . Where you had these Minority Union workers who the president is trying to mobilize. Hes going to win the overwhelming majority of working class union voters. The question is, will he get them in the margins that he needs . He got 75 . He won that by 75 . Last time he is polling more in the 50 correct range, right now same with hispanic voters. He got twothirds of those vote, that vote last time. Thats more of an even split right now. And i agree with you that theres a working class issue. Its not just its not a white, noncollege issue alone that hes going to have to address. But you say you used an important word feeling he indisputably has economic an economic story to tell. But until people feel like the economy his better, and they are beginning to feel that the question is by november will that wash point . Its hard for me to say bidenomics is working when people are still having trouble with the cost of grocery prices, right . Right. Keep in mind so donald trump won michigan in 2016. He lost to joe biden in 2020, the height of the pandemic, the economy was in free fall for these blue collar voters that donald trump does know how to communicate with. And some of his border policy, some of its trade policies resonate with them. This is where hes looking back to make ground because despite objective successes of the biden economy, theres still things like very high grocery prices, something that immediately hits you in the pocketbook and it makes people feel like theyre worse off than their actions so the macro may show this is the area he is going to be targeting the most is talking about your life would be better under me than in this biden the car. Can i tell you the other thing that i also dont think gets enough attention of michigan is they signed new voting laws into law last year in 2023 that significantly expanded early voting and mailin voting, something that as you well know, republican have struggled with because a lot of republicans want to advocate for it. Trump has continued to undermine it and it is something that really could significantly benefit biden come november and we see how close the margin has been at times. And that is something that democrats control all levers of government in michigan. They signed that into law. The voters, theyre like it. Thats something that trump has refused its true embrace, despite what his advisers well, i think its important for republicans to lean into early voting if theres a state that allows you to harvest ballots, if they legalized it, even if you oppose legalizing in the first place. Well, now its the law. If thats what we saw in nevada, a snow storm hits reno on election day in and adam laxalt doesnt become from the senator, but doesnt the former president continued to rail against that is why would i would say that the message that needs to get out to every one of his voters is how important is to vote early. And its not just about people who are considered high propensity voters to people who will come out anyway on election day but the lower propensity voters to be able to get them out earlier makes your job easier when youre trying to turn out the vote over the course of the last 24, 48, 72 hours. We also saw it recently with the Special Election in new york three, where a snowstorm ends up paying the middle of february impact of concern lately, right . But to andersons point, the president has basically armor continued. The former president has basically a continued to rail against it, calls a corrupt, calls a crooked said, when are you people going to understand . I mean, hes the biggest megaphone in his own world, but hes not, and hes doing this this isnt like something that happened in the last election. Hes still doing this until this day. Yeah, theres two names that we havent talked about tonight, and im not a big believer in machines. I dont think elected officials have, quote, unquote machines are turnout machines. I think that is a relic of the past save for Gretchen Whitmer and Garlin Gilchrist those two liters are the Democratic Party in michigan have done a really good job and they actually have an ability to carry some water for the president of the United States over donald trump and theyve won reelection there exciting candidates, both of them, one has a future and statewide politics and the other there may be one day running for president of the United States. Lets go back to jake. Thanks so much anderson joining us now is a key michigan democrat who has been, lets put it kindly, raising the alarm, sounding, sounding a warning, shooting, a warning shot. I got about the challenges President Biden faces in her home state of michigan, congresswoman Debbie Dingell, congresswoman, i remember you issuing such warnings in 2015, 2016. Not sure. You were heated, but are democrats in the white house in washington, dc listening to you now . I think i would answer it this way to 15 to 16, nobody believed the including most of the people in the media until it happened michigans a purple state. Its always a purple state. Im not old, but im seasoned and ive been through many election this is going to be a tough election year. This election could come down to the state of michigan. I think it well, its going to be purple state until election day and its not just one demographic. Youve been talking about a number of them that weve got to make sure get to the polls on election day. So for the record, i believe i believe do you in 2000, 15,016, lets talk about whats going on in your state right now because as you know, there is an organized group many of them progressives, Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, saying that in order to protest, President Bidens support for israel in the war, that country is waging against hamas in gaza, which has left a horrific death toll in its wake they should, voters showed democrats should Vote Uncommitted previously, we know that there are about 20,000 democrats who vote on committed no matter what right now, the number is approaching 25,000. And what does it you have with about 16 of the vote in . So its going to be a sizable Uncommitted Vote is this a surprise to you in any way . And what do you make of this potential impact . Will the white house change course in any way so first of all, its not a surprise to me. Ive been telling people that we have a campaign called listen to michigan with people that want to be listened to but you know, is everybody started acting surprise tonight or were looking at figures. I said to multiple people over the course of the last month. In my district, washtenaw county, which has got an arbor ypsilanti everywhere. A really ignores me when i say ypsilanti too. Ive got have more committed votes than dearborn and as youre watching, im going to see right. And i expected it because its not just the Arab American Muslim Community young people who want to be heard are concern at this game, concerns about what hamas did was a terrorist act, but they are watching innocent seville against be canceled in that kind of damage that thats there. We go to talk about that issue, but weve got to talk about a lot of other issues to womens issues are going to be critical. The environment is going to be absolutely critical. The borders important to different parts of my district, like downriver we have to talk about all those issues and weve got back to turn out voters in november. And the discussion about Union Workers was very accurate a few minutes ago as well so its my impression that the reason that listen to michigan, this group that is urging the protest vote today was one of the things theyre doing is theyre saying Pay Attention to us. President biden were not costing you anything right now other than maybe some Uncomfortable Conversations . But donald trump beat Hillary Clinton by roughly 10,000 votes in 2016, joe biden beat donald trump by roughly 154,000 votes in 2020, if you dont listen to us, maybe, maybe we will vote. Third party. Do you think that President Biden is hearing that message . And if so, what will that mean . What will that mean in terms of Foreign Policy . What will it mean in terms of outreach . Because as you know, President Biden himself has not gone to talk to the Arab American and Muslim American community in dearborn, although he has sent aides to do so so look, i think that if people want to be listened to and that this is not a monolithic community. No community is monolithic. There are some people that will vote for donald trump. I dont think its a majority of this community i think, a lot of people may stay home and a lot of people are going to know what the choice is and that the choice is going to help them make their decision that they dont want to see somebody whos called them poison or vermont or wants to ban them from this country elected either. But right now, people are hurting. I think that people are two law. Youve seeing that people have been not even wanted to meet with some National Security team or samantha powers. We did president s working towards a temporary ceasefire. He says, ive called her ceasefire weve watched too many innocent people hi, there does is in terrible shape, but i think he does need to sit down with this community when feelings are quite so rock. But hes also gotta do, its not just this community, this community is important in michigan, but weve got a turnout or vote. Womens voices are going to be very important. Women were energized two years ago, begin to make sure this debris this vote, who wins michigan is going to come down to who vote. And this is going to be about getting out the vote last question, your colleague, your colleague, congresswoman Rashida Tlaib voted uncommitted in this primary her sister is in fact, running the listen to michigan campaign. I believe you have said that you told congresswoman tlaib that if trump had been president when hamas attacked israel then trump just would have quote, nuked gaza has she told you how shes going to vote in november i havent received him. I talked all the time and im these are very private conversations and i want to be shes angry, shes got a grandmother that lifts there. She has family thats really been heard you need to understand that in my district. But these people have had Family Members, mothers, and fathers in famed parents and aunts and uncles. She is doing casework everyday of trying to get families were desperate to get their Family Members out in even when you get all the paperwork and the visas and a place for them to come . You cannot get them out of gaza so i understand where she is right now. We each have to make her own decision, but i understand how hurt and robbie seated to lead the as right now, she represents a lot of people that she represent. We need to understand that weve got all put on our and i understand that. I keep saying the baby everybody, a jewish baby and palestinian babies, baby are both babies, their children. And i want all of our children to live in peace amen to that congresswoman Debbie Dingell. Good to see you as always, dana bash it is a rough night for democrats trying to figure out how to make sure that what were seeing in terms of this Uncommitted Vote doesnt vote thirdparty or stay home, or vote for donald trump in november, you know, as you are talking to congresswoman dingell, i was thinking about what the Biden Administration could do more of. I mean, obviously, we have seen a big shift in rhetoric and policy as weve been talking about, certainly since id, after dr. Tobar seventh, we have seen in the past few weeks, Biden Administration officials, as she mentioned, go up and try to talk to people in the community. We havent seen the president himself and hes good in the room. I mean, this is he knows how to talk to people and he knows how to certainly express empathy for peoples pain. And so my question is, how quickly after this regardless of whether the numbers get much, much higher or not, is he going to go to michigan and not make the mistake frankly, that the Clinton Campaign did, which is not taking michigan is seriously very different issues. David, i also thought the other thing that congresswoman dingell said that we should keep our mind she said women are going to be a huge factor. She said that a few times. And i think its important for us to remember abortion rights was an enormous battle in michigan, who was part of Governor Whitmers huge reelection success, flipping the legislature to democrats were not even talking about Something Like that in the context of this democratic primary tonight with uncommitted, but i guarantee you that Governor Whitmer is going to make sure the issue of abortion rights is central to this trump versus Biden Campaign in this battleground, although she cant make it a referendum because he already did that for her own reelection thats a governors prerogative. Lots of votes still account tonight and michigan, were tracking them they come and coming up. Were gonna talk with a key member of the Biden Harris Reelection Campaign as the democratic protest vote for uncommitted picks up votes were back in a moment, stay with us sunday van jones heads home to find out what is driving the divide in tennessee politics has been a very active 20 to 30 year effort to separate us. Ones who get it done United States of scandal with jake tapper sunday at nine on cnn it is a wolverine kinda night perusal president ial battleground, state of michigan is weighing in tonight on the 2024 fight for the white house, sending messages to both president job for biden and donald trump. I had of their anticipated rematch in november. If youre just joining us greetings, im jake tapper and im standing right in the cnn election center. President biden and former President Trump or both michigan primary winners tonight, but thats not the full story of these very significant context. I want you to take a look at the votes in the democratic race. Its a warning sign for President Biden there a protest vote for uncommitted gaining ground. Now this protest vote, pushed by a ponens of how President Biden is handling the israel hamas war. Many of them desire a permanent ceasefire and theyre demanding that the United States his Government Cut military aid to israel lets take a look at these numbers with 19 of the estimated vote in President Joe Biden more than the number two, which is uncommitted with 14. 7 of the vote, 28,662 votes in the rear, dean phillips, congressman 2. 8 of the vote. But what i want you to understand is that normally in a primary 20,000 people will Vote Uncommitted we only have about 20 of the vote in. Weve already far surpassed that so there is going to be a sizeable protest vote tonight. That the biden team is going to have to contend with and worry about because in november it could come down to just, you thousand votes. Remember, trump won michigan with only 10,000 votes in 2016, biden won in 2020, 154,000. So that uncommitted, thats an Important Group of folks now, lets look at the republican side. Donald trump has scored another decisive win against nikki haley. This propels him closer to the republican president ial nomination with these blockbusters, Super Tuesday contests, just one week away. So trumps dominance is clear, but haley is arguing that mr. Trump is failing to unite Republican Party and she continues to peel away much of the republican vote. Lets take a look at that. 20 of the estimated vote in donald trump has we expected, is in the lead. He is the projected winner, 66. 5 of the vote. He has 192,910 votes. Thats 109,007 777 votes ahead of nikki haley, who is 28. 6 of the vote. Thats 83,304. But as i noted earlier, it is important to remember the narrow margin of victory in michigan joe biden. No no doubt about it is going to be targeting these 83,304 people who dont want to vote for donald trump, even though hes clearly going to be their nominee. So lets talk about this all with john king, who is standing at the magic wall and theres a lot going on here, even though for contests where there are two decisive victories, i have to say there is a lot going on here. Weve said this throughout the primary so far about former President Trump, and were going to say tonight about President Biden, even as you see their strengths. And both candidates have considerable strength. On nights like this, you also see their weaknesses, or at least there are places where they need to do repair slips are showing that 15 , 15 he percent of the vote tonight, you have a democratic incumbent president 3 voting for congressman phillips. So if you just want to say, i want someone else, you had an opportunity. This is an im mad at you. Its a protest vote the bulk of it the bulk of that is about the israel Hamas Conflict and the view of Arab Americans, Younger Voters and others, liberals that the president its too quick to side with netanyahu not doing enough for the palestinians. The white house would argue, wait, a long time since october 7, Pay Attention, but heres the president has repair work to do here its interesting. The repair work you look at 15 in a key battleground state that tends to pick our president s. So itd be one of the two or three to pick our presence. You say, wheres the problem . I would argue and were still waiting by the way, this is the most important part. How high does the number go . How high is the number of votes and the percentage statewide by the end of the night for uncommitted depends on wayne county and were nowhere in the count 4 that is quite tradition. What are they doing that now . That is quite traditional. Ive been doing this a long time wayne county, gary, indiana, i could go on, but well just stick with wayne county right now. Were in michigan. It takes them a long time to count the votes. So were waiting for that, but thats going to have a huge say both in your total number because its the Population Center and its also were dearborn is its detroit, its dearborn total number and the percentage. But just to make a point here, if you look if you come up here, just to look, lets just pick over here. Kent county, the suburbs verbs, grand rapids in the suburbs around it, uncommitted here. Getting right now 12 of about 14 . So not saying thats, thats a wound. Are the President Biden has to has to heal, but then you come here, Debbie Dingell was just talking about this Washington County where the university is. Its above 20 . And so the the targeted problem for the president is Younger Voters and the Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, people of Middle Eastern descent, 300,000 of them live in the state of michigan. Thats thats where in arberys are . No, there now and arberys where i just showed you. Yes, this is where arborist and arberys here and i was on University Of Michigan. Ive been on that campus and just its high the anger, the temper, the frustration is high and you have people there saying a lot of academics to a a lot academics, but a lot of young people, a lot of young people who voted for biden in 2020, some of whom say theyre Voting Uncommitted tonight as a protest, theyre not donald trump fans. There was one young man we talked about. There is actually from georgia, helped the aclu registered voters 2020 to help joe biden win, who said hes going to vote third party. Now he has the aisle. Its easy if people at home ago he has socialists leanings. Hes way left. People who could all just one kid, whatever hes a socialist. But in a competitive election, every vote counts, you know, people say a lot of democrats say the same thing about trump voters speak of them and disparaging ways. You have one vote shy of one vote, they have one when the elections are close, thats what matters. But you do see that thats why this wayne county vote is so important because you do see its 24 now, early on. So the president has some healing to do and its very important in the state so close it will be targeted mostly in the detroit area and on the College Campuses doesnt mean it doesnt exist elsewhere. But thats the biggest part of the problem. And jake, you see the same exact thing. On The Other Side, the Haley Campaign, its hard to argue with their points tonight on committed, its getting 15 right now, and were saying joe biden has some work to do. Well, shes getting 30 and were saying thats an overwhelming win. Both things are true, but both things are true. He has some work to do to again, if you look at the map, wheres the work you come up with some of these Rural Counties, you just pick one out up here Donald Trumps getting 77 . The rural base of the trump party is still with trump. Then you come down to Macomb County here. The blue collar base of the new trump Republican Party is with donald trump. But then just drive a little bit, leaves slim shady, and come over here to the suburbs and look what happened nikki haley gets 30 in the suburbs. Donald trump still has, even as he rolls to the republican nomination, still has weaknesses in american suburb. Thats why joe bidens president and just keep in mind, this is who turned out to vote, right . Its the people who turned out to vote and its pretty clear. Im sure to everybody who voted today, the Donald Trumps going to be the nominee and they still turned out to vote for nikki haley. So in many ways, theyre voting for nikki haley, but in others, its a protest vote just as much as uncommitted. So how much of those uncommitted come home, and how much a harder to either harder to get home or refused to come home. Its the very same question there. How many of those are republicans who will vote . For him in november . They just prefer her today. And how many ever saying okay. I cant vote for him. So once shes done, assuming that soon, if it happens, unless its a miracle, where did they go . If theres any good news for joe biden in this, it is some of these people are going to be gettable. Some of these nikki haley people are going to be good for biden i dont know how many of the uncommitted people are going to be gettable for trump, maybe for jill stein, maybe for cornell west, but for trump i dont know. The other thing is that nikki haleys number is much bigger. Lets go to dearborn. Now, the center of this protest movement, jeff zeleny is there covering the democrats and the protest for uncommitted the protest vote. Jeff, what are proponents of that protest vote saying about the region . Results tonight as they come in jake, we have just stepped outside the event celebrating the success in their view of this uncommitted movement. Here we are in dearborn, of course, the heart of the Arab American and Muslim American population, sharon his john was talking, we are in wayne county, so those are the numbers that are still going to be coming in and that is likely to add a, it is going to add a significant margin to the uncommitted. But regardless of the final number organizers here and supporters here, they believe they have already won a measure of success because they believe theyve sent a message loud and clear to President Biden, and indeed they have we have seen his language change in recent months. The question is, what do the voters and the organizers do from here forward, just a short time ago, the House Democratic floor a leader of the Michigan Statehouse he said, we are going on to chicago. We are going to the Democratic National convention to protest in the streets this Antiwar Movement his growing. So that is not going to go away. This is something that is going to continue and it will be a soundtrack of this president ial campaign. There is no doubt about that. However, talking to another businessman whos just leaving this event just a few moments ago, he said he voted uncommitted because he did want to register a protest vote. I said how will you vote in november . He said, i dont know. Once it becomes a choice, he said between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. He said he desperately wants to keep donald trump out of the white house. So he said that will be a difficult decision to make. I suspect that he sums up the sentiment of many rank and file of voters who voted uncommitted today. Of course, the organizers are committed to this cause, but this is something that is going to stay with the white house, stay with the president. Now, Uncommitted Votes are not necessarily an a common occurrence. I remember thinking back to the 2012 campaign, barack obama also had some uncommitted on the ranks. The difference here is the substance of why it is unclear committed. It is because of the war. Its because of the president s handling of the war. And that is a burning issue here that is so deeply personal and jake, that is not likely to change anytime soon unless there is a permanent ceasefire. And we all know how difficult that will be. Jan. Tsai war protesters taking to the streets of chicago for the Democratic National convention but because wrong, what could go wrong . Jeff zeleny, thanks so much going our conversation now, the national cochair for the bidenharris president ial campaign and former Senior Adviser to President Biden, former mayor of new orleans, mitch landrieu. If i used to be somebody, you is now youre saying here with us, i get stuck on this panel this has a moussa flex from a group that is not happy with joe biden and they are making a point. Yeah, it well, can can i make a point, please . 80 80 . I mean, thats the fourth one that weve been in, joe biden had a really, really strong night tonight. You cant cut it any other way. Than that. That is not to say that the Uncommitted Vote wasnt substantial the sending a message the president , as you know, has gotten the message the president has sent a number of Senior Advisers out to michigan to talk about this. This is a very complicated issue. The president continues to make sure that we put american interests first and is working hard as you know . On humanitarian aid, working on a ceasefire so that we can actually get the hostages out and continues to listen to this very difficult pain that communities are going through all across the country, both in the Jewish Community and then muslim and the Palestinian Community as well. That message that has been delivered, its going to keep getting delivered in the president s going to continue to listen, but lets just make the point about what happened in michigan tonight. Donald trump got 66 of the vote. Nikki haley got 30, whatever she got, thats a big chunk of change. Yeah. And joe biden got 80 and uncommitted got 14. So you would much rather be joe biden tonight that donald trump, because at the end of the day, when people focus in on this race is going to be joe biden in the future versus its donald trump in the past. And people are going to really have to make a decision about what direction they want the country to go with the campaign initially sent up some Campaign Advisers and important people in michigan, like the mayor of dearborn said, no, i wanted to hear from the policy people. And then the white house said some policy people, yeah when teigen ago, when the when is the president going to go . I dont know. Im sure at some time, many of us because they want to be heard and the way to be heard is to actually have all this one. Remember, when the french, when the first, i think when, when the Campaign Manager weather they said we really want to talk to people as you know. The next week, they really three senior people and the meeting, although it was tough and it was hard, was it was a heartfelt meeting where the leaders took back to the white house with a thoughts where i was in michigan last week, i was in flint, michigan also was with some folks from the operating engineers. Ive talked to pass theres any african American Community we talked to Law Enforcement got a great response, but to be clear, the president hears what it is that the folks in michigan is saying and what the uncommitted team is asking us to think about. And hes putting that into his thought about how to move forward on this very complicated, very difficult issue, which as you know, were really not i driving the train on. And it is not something thats going to be easy. You saw the president , i think yesterday getting ice cream when somebody asked him, well, whats going on with this and he said, look, i expect from my advice is hopefully to have some news on great humanitarian aid. And then of course, hopefully at least a temporary ceasefire so they can get the hostages out. It is a critical problem, but the president believes that people ought to voice their opinion. People in michigan and doing that. And of course, people across the country will continue to do that and he will take that into consideration as he moves forward on this very complicated and difficult issue, mr. Mayor, we just broaden this conversation out for a second. If i understand that the election is not until the fall, if the election were today with joe biden lose reelection. I dont think so. What is it about the state of michigan . Do you think it is behaving with its battleground status substantially different than some of the other Battleground States is there is a justice issue that were talking about. Is there Something Else going on that you think that you and the team in wilmington see in the data that in michigan somehow was proving more problematic for joe biden at this time in the campaign than some of the other battle. Well, thats an actual question. Ill leave it up to you guys who could run and gows. I can run the numbers better than i can. Each state has different New Hampshires different, of course, in South Carolina, South Carolina is different from nevada. Nevada is very different from michigan. Michigan is a very diverse state. It does have a very heavy muslim popular and so because of this particular issue, whether you can compare it to other states and i mean, i really dont know. You made a comment just before i think in 2012, just to remind everybody, 60 delegates, obama lost in michigan and then went on to do really fairly well and they will uncommitted almost in every campaign that approximate, they may be a little bit lower. They may be a little higher. So its not a death sentence. Its a challenge that you have to work through on The Other Side of the aisle, if youre donald trump and nikki haleys clock in in 40 . And then shes clocking in 30 . And in the exit polls, half of those people are saying, im never voting for trump thats a real serious problem. This ones a serious problem that we have to deal with. We have to work through and at the end of the day, the president has to make the case that hes the one that can help provide the Better Future for american, i think joe bidens got the receipts on this. I mean, all of you have covered joe bidens presidency. Joe biden created 15 million jobs who have the lowest unemployment rate. We now have 46,000 house an Infrastructure Projects going on across the country. We have 650 billion of private Sector Investment and weve got the receipts. You gotta guy, otherwise, it just talks about things that has now talking about oppression, revenge, and actually looking backward. And i think when americans look at that choice really clearly, the fairy dust leaves the eyes of all the pundits about how its not going to be biden its not going to be trump. It is going to be them. But then then, then were going to really kind of get down to brass. Accounts though for the fact that biden is underperforming with his coalition with people who brought him to the presidency in 2020 matches muslim voter, american voters, young voters, pulls to these struggling with hispanic voters. Black voters also, why . Hi is a president having such a hard time convincing those voters . Well, you say that because youve been looking at the polls, but when you look at the results from the primaries, he did exceedingly well in every primary that he said clocking in at 85, 90, 96 , but hes got, hes got to win some of these voters back to, well, yeah. And so on. Nikki haleys people are looking for someplace to land too. So its about building coalitions. But at the end of the day, its about a choice about what kind of america you want to live in. And joe biden has, has, has kind of painted a picture of what the future of american you can look like. That includes everybody that actually builds things from the bottom up in the middle out. Donald trump continues to talk about rabban. She continues to talk about giving tax breaks to the richie continues to talk about trying to find a way to find immunity if you can, for him to order seal Seal Team Six to kill political opponents that on a freeze, everybody in that tracks right away about what were facing and how much worse Donald Trumps going to be, then how bad he was the first time he was in office when we talk about the issue on the table here, which is this Uncommitted Vote for the president s policies and his support for netanyahu in the middle east. Do you think there is any his support for israel . Its important for israel and the manifestation of that is the support for the Prime Minister of israel, which has netanyahu. But its actually interesting that you corrected me because dont you think that the kind of result that the president wants and is pushing for will not happen. By his own words, with Benjamin Netanyahu is Prime Minister. And if thats the case, does netanyahu does President Biden want benny gantz to drop out of the war cabinet and run against him for Prime Minister. Well, im not going to get get ahead of the president on any of those things. And im not going to pretend to be jake solomon. You can ask him that when he comes on on on your program, i made a made that point because the president , as you know, has been a big supporter of visual. Israel has a right to exist. Israel has a right to protect itself and the president has historically been there. Thats where he is now. He also has demonstrated, i think in the last month or so about the commitment that he has to make sure that hes pushing as hard as he can on the leaders of visual who by the way, the president does not get to choose. Thats why this is really complicated, because the american president cant say who he wants the Prime Minister of israel to be. You have to work with who was there . But the president has put, as you know, publicly, he said, ill put pressure on bb to do the things that i need him to do in the most humanitarian way as possible. But wars, as you know, this war is really hard all of the pictures, all of the deaths on both sides, awful. Its a terrible situation thats very complicated, difficult, and the president will continue to prosecute his case publicly. And of course, as you know privately, very aggressively as his team has been doing, he said that you did spend some time in michigan, including flint. What did you hear from the community there . I assume that you spend some time with the africanAmerican Community, did what did you hear about their concerns . Weve been talking a lot tonight about uncommitted and of course that is about the, mideast, but as manu was talking about their other, very important. I think there are a lot of late americans is women what i generally heard in the meeting said hour and is thanks to the president who finally delivering on promises that have been made in the africanAmerican Community, the funding for hbcus, of course, when we were in flint, we were actually talking about the precedence commitment to make sure that everybody has what else do they all, all of all of the pipes in flint now have been replaced. Small business help, also making sure that jobs are available. So when we when we talk to local, the local operating engineers, they were thrilled about the Infrastructure Projects that were going on that were creating high paying jobs jobs. They want a country thats inclusive. They want a country that actually gives people from the bottom in the middle up an opportunity, which is what the president has done. And listen. Hes got the receipts, 15 million jobs. Donald trump lost 2. 5 million jobs. Thats a 17 million jobs weighing thats a big deal. No matter where you count it. And when we tell the people about that, when the choice is really clear, because i have a lot of faith in the american citizens so theres the President Joe Biden is going to get reelected again. All right. Mate andrea. Thank you so much for being here. Really appreciate it. Thank you. Thanks. And family recommend force vector rushed to walmart, release your potential, which forced vegas the story of sin city sunday at ten on cnn we have key race alert time for you now, lets look at the board with 24 of the estimated vote in an incumbent President Joe Biden is of course the winner of the michigan Democratic Party primary, rather 79. 7 of the vote, 180 4,149 votes. Thats more than 150,000 votes, more than number two, which is uncommitted, which has 14. 5 of the vote. And dean phillips bringing up the rear with 2. 8 . But as we noted earlier, michigan generally has 20,000 people who Vote Uncommitted, but there is an effort to have a protest vote. People who dont like President Bidens support of Prime Minister netanyahu and israel. They want to cease fire. They want military aid to israel and then they were calling for an Uncommitted Vote so on top of the 20th thousand that we normally expect, we havent additional now, 33,492 total, and its only a quarter of the vote in. So that is the significant story of the night. In addition to President Biden, of course, winning the democratic primary. Lets go to the republican side now, donald trump, of course, with the declared him the winner of the Michigan Republican primary. He is 66. 7 of the vote thats 237,243 votes, 136,000, and change ahead of nikki haley, who has 28. 3 of the vote. Nikki haley with 100,630 votes. And again, as i said before, about the Uncommitted Vote, that is 100,000 people, Republican Voters in michigan who do not want donald trump to be the nominee. Where are they going to go in november . That is the conundrum, and that is why we are watching this race with fascination and bated breath, john king, where the votes coming in from, you make a key point. People walked, watching at home are going to say on the one hit, well, this is a blow out. Why are they saying theres something to learn here . I will. Theres a theres always something to learn, but b, you have to essentially incumbents joe biden for the democrats, donald trump, the former president for the republicans. Who have giant strengths and yet significant, important weaknesses worth studying as you go forward for the incumbent president , noted states mayor landrieu was just trying to make the 0. 80 to 58 , okay. You know, if the rocket scientists, you could do the math at home. Sure. However, thats an unhappy protest vote against the president because of issues today or the left as several months, most of that is because of people who disagree with his conduct, his siding with netanyahu, which is near view over siding with netanyahu in the israelHamas Conflict. There, Arab Americans, theyre Younger Voters, theyre more. And so where are they . We still, this is the frustration tonight, but the frustration every election im on detroit, michigan, they Council County wayne county account slowly we love baseball. Wayne county count slowly. Those things will never change. Yeah, thats apparently thats the way it goes. You move over here. This is interesting again, as i was saying earlier, you try to, wheres your weakness . Bigger . College county. This is Washington County is where University Of Michigan and arbor campuses. So the presence, the healing, the presence going to have to do if hes going to get these people back, is to get on College Campuses. Number one and talk to young people who also who, even before that, theres an age disconnect even before that we saw some evidence to president had problems with Younger Voters and then the other issue is going to be jeff zeleny has been on several times tonight. He is right here in 94 out of detroit. You get to dearborn it is a thriving wonderful arab American Community and they are very, very mad at the president. They help elect that they just are, they are very, very mad at a precedent. They help elect the question is now uncommitted tonight. Where are you in november . And its 24 in wayne county right now, that math is going to go up as we get more votes without a doubt. So you have strength, but a weakness . And if you flip the table, you see the same. Because if were, if again, the Haley Campaign is saying this, im not just repeating them to repeat them. Theres some basis to it. If joe bidens has issues at 15 , well then why doesnt donald trump have issues . When im at 28 and she is correct. And again, you look at where those issues are, which is fascinating to me in blue collar Macomb County. This is again, these people used to be democrats than there was the big fight about reagan democrats in the 80s and early 90s. There trump republicans now but creek carried Macomb County. This is the big fight. Will the United Auto Workers endorsement helped joe biden . Can you get the teamsters endorsement . Can he convince blue collar people to come back to him . Well, tonight, the republicans in so im county, michigan are saying we are still with him, right . Thats not a big number. Its still 18 , but then you come over here to the suburbs and it goes to 32. I mean, these people dont live that far from each other, but this is blue color. This is more upscale suburbs. Thats donald trump, kryptonite, or the american suburbs, without a doubt, as you watch it play out. And yet, and yet donald trump is five and run on the table. Yes six. Now, if you count the Virgin Islands and let me just slide over one second hard here for me. So two weeks from tonight two weeks from tonight, if this continues at the pace that is right now you see where he is right now. Hes going to get the bulk of the michigan delegates. She may get four or five, depending on that statewide percentage, there maybe more, maybe less. But two weeks from tonight, were on a path to that. But unless she somehow starts beating him, shes hes undefeated. Unless she somehow it turns this tide, which nobody, theres no data to suggest thats about to happen. All the data is to the contrary two weeks from tonight, even though yes, he has weaknesses hes going to be the republican nominee. So just to go back to the number for one second, and i just wanted to show show the biden the democratic number here in michigan for one second. I just want to people at home to remember this. Okay. So this is 35,046 and maybe some democrats are saying, why are you making such a big deal out . I mean, the number is going to be bigger, willing got a quarter of the vote in its 35,000. So theoretically that could be 140,000, maybe im just extrapolating, but its 35,000. Lets just stick with that because thats an actual number. Okay. Lets go to the republican one now, 35,000 uncommitted. And for nikki haley, 107,640 and probably a lot of people at home, republicans or democrats, trumps supporters by and supporters are saying its not really that many people just remember in 2016, donald trump won michigan with ten. He won by about 10,000 votes. He won by one by about 10,000 votes. And in 2020, joe biden won michigan by about 154 thousand votes. So these small margins can cost the candidates. The state come november, anderson lets go to kylie atwood covering the nikki Haley Campaign from the Salt Lake City, utah, one of the Super Tuesday states that haley is competing in next week. So 15 states, kiley vote a week from today i was. The haley camp planning to take on this key test. I mean, this is it for them this is it. Anderson will put this is the most consequential week to date for nikki haleys campaign and she herself has raised the stakes incredibly high because when shes asked about the American People for the Republican Party siding with trump. She often points out that only a few states have voted, but then she points out that after Super Tuesday, there will be more than 20 states and territories that have voted. And so she has put the stakes incredibly high for her campaign, leading into that week. Now, by Super Tuesday, she will have visited ten states that are going to vote on that day. We are in utah, thats one of the state shes going to be visiting here tomorrow and her job is really twofold as shes out on the campaign trail this week. First, of course, trying to win over those voters, but then second is trying to raise new Campaign Cash she had her most successful fundraising month to date in january, but we dont know how much Campaign Cash her campaign currently has in the bank. Its noteworthy that in the 48 hours since the South Carolina primary, even though she lost it, she was able to haul in 2 million in new donations. Thats what a Campaign Official tells me. But also this weekend or sin, we should note that the pope political network, afp, also decided that they are no longer going to be boosting her campaign. Theyre going to be focusing on down ballot candidates instead. So with those two realities, it is important for her when shes headed to the states, shes going to meet with donors as well to try and get more cash into her her Campaign Bank account in order to fuel her campaign, if she wants to go past Super Tuesday, anderson, kelly, i would think so much even as nikki haley is losing another primary contests of donald trump tonight, she tells her dana bash shes committed to staying in the race at least through the Super Tuesday contests next week youre committing that you are going to be in this race through Super Tuesday im aware in all the Super Tuesday states now, thats what this is all about, is making sure that we hit every state and let, you know, look, there is a voice out there for you. There is a way out. Yes. We are fighting through it yes. Yes. Unequivocally, urine through Super Tuesday absolutely. Add. We have a country to save. Absolutely here were the team in new york, so david, you during the break, you were asking the question, what is haleys end game . Yeah. Because you dont you know, shes not talking about delegates anymore. Shes not really suggesting that that shes going to win this contest. You saw the math that john king just put up on the board but she she said we are offering voters a life raft from what she thinks is going to be disaster in the fall. And it feels like shes sort of setting herself up for the posttrump era. If trump loses in the fall that she is going to be the one who said, i stood up for for principle. I told you that this was going to be we need to take a different direction. The thing is though, when you heard the conversation with dana and we know what nikki haleys stands for. Shes a shes a strong on National Security, fiscal conservative. She is the kind of republican that once was the dominant republican in the party that is not the drift of the Republican Party. Now so the question is, is she fighting to lead a party that doesnt want to go . She has provided a life for f no one has scrapped or just a two thirds of people are in scrambling into the boat. But i would argue, sorry. I would argue the question is less, what is nikki haley going to do next and how was donald trump going to get the 30 to 40 shes consistently held. There are deep substantive differences between nikki haley and donald trump. Shes not an election denier. She support for its aid to ukraine. Weve not talked about this tonight. This is one of the biggest issues happening in our country, but internationally right now. And there are republicans who will not be or with republicans if they continue to block this aid package. Shes talking about budgets and deficits. There are p she is making real contrast to donald trump and even if just say 10 of her supporters can never be with donald trump, that is enough to hold him up in a General Election and keep it. So are you saying that so what im so explain how this all plays out are you saying he should change his position on these issues . Are you saying that he does not have a Winning Coalition right now . Hes running on attacking ivf taylor swift football and people want to normal Republican Party this onethird of normal republicans who are grasping for anything else, many of them will not be having we have here. Well, first, i look, i do think youre right that donald trump is demonstrating a lot of weaknesses as he has every time he has run for president the one thing though, is that i do think that weve seen evidence of republicans generally coming home to the Republican Party. Many republicans probably that you know, who dont like donald trump but would not cast a vote for joe biden and cast a vote for trump instead, as the lesser of two evils. So we have to keep in mind that that is still on the table for probably a large swath of that 30 . But as it relates to nikki haley and what shes doing, it does strike me just in listening to her tonight. And listening to her over the last few weeks she is making a case for herself, not maybe not in this cycle, but maybe in the next one. Shes the last woman standing. Shes putting up 30 , 40 against donald trump and doing so in a way that i think she thinks is leaving herself open to the possibility of being able to run when trump cant be on the ballot again and saying, well, its just time to turn the page, look at what i did the last time because people like ron desantis are not sitting on their hands right now. Theyre preparing for the next go round. And by staying in this race, she really shows that she has the ability to go the longer she stays in, the more votes she gets, the more money she raises, the more name id she gets. This is not bad for her are you able to say million was very sorry knew that a point of no return. So im agreeing with abby. She really has nothing to lose, but let us not forget, she has weaknesses to me. She couldnt even when her own state and were also making an assumption that even when mr. Trump is not running for president , hes still going to hold what enormous sway over the party. And there is a disconnect between the Republican Party that nikki haley is talking about and the Republican Party that is my last point. She denied, you know, shes the candidate that denied what the civil war while the civil war started. And a lot of people are not going forget that, especially the african American Community so its not just mr. Donald j. Trump that has deficiency. She does, too. But the point about what type of Republican Party will do is continue to be, i believe that former president donald j. Trump is going to have sway over this party for many, many decades. There are a couple of points i wanted to make. The first is that this is why when we juxtapose the racist tonight, i believe that joe bidens having you know, much stronger night and donald trump, i mean, we have that 33, 34,000 voters that are uncommitted and the Biden White House has to be extremely careful not to just discard that. They need to listen to the emotions of those voters, hear them out and understand what their anger is from. Thats first but, sir, no. But the other thing that is very important is that donald trump has his grip on the Republican Party. This is Donald Trumps Republican Party and nobody can duplicate that. Not even nikki haley. What is she going to do to maintain any relevance over the next . Even spend money in michigan and she spent his life because theyre not voting for her. They voting against him, correct . Its thatll matter in a general this time i would have to respectfully disagree with my friend bakari is going to bode well for me im getting your your, your followers back audience from us agreeing earlier, theres a big enthusiasm gap. If you look right now, theres 26, 20 he, 7 of the vote in between the democratic turnout, the republican turnout, the republican turnout is right now far trouncing the democratic turnout. And thats the percentage of the total vote that were waiting to come in. Itll be interesting to see what comes in from wayne county. Yes, i get that. But President Trumps number at the moment is actually more than all of the Democratic Party primary voters together. So i would say that President Trump when looking at the amount of people who are coming out to vote for him tonight would be very encouraged by the amount of votes to understand is getting compared to all the democrats get ago, who have shown up. Its really the point here is i just, i just wanted to say what this underscores is, how much each candidate is relying on the other candidate to organize the vote that they dont have right now to come home in november. So were quarter of the michigan vote is and were keeping an eye on the total for the Uncommitted Vote on the democratic side up next, a key advocate of that puts his campaign, joins us, discuss the message being sent the president tonight. Lot more head would be very sorry. You hear about your father. Father, mother. Thank you. Well, thats a little better. You have no harm, no soul fabric curb your enthusiasm. For the price that cable cant be try free at fubotv United States of scandal with jake tapper. Sunday, a nen n and were back with our live coverage of the michigan primaries. And were just getting new reaction from President Biden to the results and his victory as well as the strong protest vote for uncommitted in the democratic contest. Lets check in with mj lee at the white house. Mj, what is the precedent have to say . Yeah, weve just gotten the official statement from President Biden via the campaign. It doesnt make any explicit reference to the uncommitted campaign, but it does acknowledge the fact that voters spoke out tonight. Heres what the statement says in part. I want to thank every michigan and are who made their voice her today, exercising the right to vote. And participating in our democracy is what makes america great. The president says four years ago was michigan siversk coalition that came together to reject Donald Trumps maga extremism and sent me and camila to the white house. And because of michiganders, weve been able to work handinhand and with government Governor Whitmer. And the incredible Democratic Leaders in michigans congressional delegation to deliver enormous progress. He goes on to talk about how despite all of this progress, theres a lot of work to be done and says that donald trump is threatening to drag us even further into the past as he pursues revenge and retribution. So a clearly there is this quick allusion to the uncommitted effort and the fact that voters went out and spoke their minds. But that quick pivot to the General Election, which is really what weve seen the Biden Campaign do over the last many weeks, you know, the white house and the president is certainly concerned and very much knows that this tonight, what we saw in michigan very much represents the anger and the frustration that so many people are feeling across the country, particularly as the israelhamas war is dragging on. And i do think that this is why we have seen such a significant shift in rhetoric from the president in the recent days its including yesterday when we heard him talking openly about wanting to see a ceasefire. These are all issues at the white house is grappling with and hoping that things can get better as the war changes to a different part and a different stage in the fighting. And of course they understand the important constituencies that are at play in michigan and theyre saying that it is not a monolithic state and they know that it is not a single issue stayed, and certainly that there are a number of different kinds of constituencies that they are fighting hard to hopefully win over come november j. D. All right. Mj lee, thanks so much. Lets go to john king now john, you have some new information about the uncommitted so its a couple of important new ways to look at this jake, including the first votes from dearborn where you saw jeff zeleny at the dinner where they were organizing the big protests. Obviously, that is ground zero for the Muslim American population in michigan, forgive me, i just pull up this blackboard here first. First i want to show you wayne county dearborn is right here to the west of detroit. These are the wayne county results has been frustrating county always count slow or theyre only a 4 of the estimated vote. We know that none of this that youre seeing President Biden at 71 uncommitted at 24 . This does not include any votes from dearborn, but cnn has obtained from the city some of their vote counts. So let me pull up this blackboard here and ill write them in for you. Forgive me for turning my back, but im lefthanded. Let me move this over here. Im going to put this here. These are the unofficial results from the city of dearborn. But on city letterhead, this is what joe biden received. Again, forgive me, 1,100 and 41 votes dean phillips 54 votes and uncommitted make sure i get this right 3,703 votes. So thats a wow, if you look at it this way, this is 23 and this is 75 and so this is just the city of dearborn, but that is where the biggest pocket of the Muslim American, the Arab American population. This is a place President Biden carried big in 2020. This is key to his chances of defeating donald trump in michigan again, now, 75 to 23 in the city of dearborn. Were waiting to get even more results from wayne county. But this just tells you again, its going to raise the total number without a doubt, let me turn this off. Thats uncommitted. Yes, im committed to 75 , 23 for President Biden, which is going to raise number one, those 3,700 votes are not reflected in the 2000 there from wayne county. So its going to raise the numbers in wayne county to begin with, and its to obviously raise the percentage in wayne county when you see the lopsided percentage of this right there. So you see in the city we were looking at most closely for how mad, how mad are people at the president. Thats a very significant number out of dearborn. Thats one way to look at it. I just want also come back and look at it this way. So were looking at the state of michigan. There were about 300,000 people who live in the state who family roots tie back to the middle east region, 200,000 Muslim Americans live in the city of michigan so lets take this and look through a demographic lens of the michigan muslim population. Let me move this up so you can see it a little better. The darker the yellow are the orange, the more brown here. Thats thats dearborn. Thats wayne county in dearborn, the darker the color, the higher the percentage of Muslim Americans, right . So remember that, remember where you see the growth in the concert . Centration of the muslim population. And so now were going to say where are the votes for uncommitted that we have so far . Where are they coming from . So were going to bring this in and lay it over it right here. The larger the circle the higher the vote for uncommitted in that area. Remember, you see those big circles. Where are they . Theyre over wayne county, there are over dearborn, theyre over those other surrounding suburbs right around detroit, where you have the largest Muslim American population. So yes, uncommitted is getting votes everywhere. But the big concentration tells you jake, the president s big problem. Muslim americans who were critical absolutely critical to his big margin in michigan in 2020 are telling the president tonight that they are mad. Indeed, john king, thanks so much joining us now is a key supporter of the protest vote for uncommitted in tonights primary former democratic congressman andy levin of michigan, congressman thanks so much. Joining us. Uh, youre one of the leading voices who urged democrats to Vote Uncommitted. Today, to send a message to President Biden to support a ceasefire and to end military aid to israel. Did this protest achieve what you hoped it would, right now, were at let me look at the board here. Youre about to hit 40 thousand votes for uncommitted with just only a 31 of the overall estimated vote in. So youre headed to big numbers. Did this achieve what you want . It . I mean, this is historic jake. It looks like therell be over 100,000 Uncommitted Voters in michigan joe biden won michigan by 154,000 votes in 2020. And this is not in the president ial contest. This is in a primary where there was no drama and no uncertainty, right . We know joe biden is going to be our nominee. So its very, very significant outcome. I dont take any joy in it. I hasten to say my idea of this was not that i was going to go out and get people who are otherwise going to come out and vote for the president to Vote Uncommitted my worry was that this, this primary would happen and the president wouldnt get the message about how mad people are. So i was saying to all those Arab American and other muslim and African American and young and all these other voters who are so mad at the president and about gaza, dont stay home, dont stay home, go out and shake your fist go to the ballot box and tell the president youre mad. Otherwise he wont know. And i think that message is being effectively communicated tonight. Congressman, its dana bash. I want to ask about something that the democratic floor leader of the Michigan House said and that is that this movement is onto chicago, meaning the democratic convention, which is going to happen this summer is that a sign that you dont think that the president is going to be responsive to what you just described as unprecedented tonight in michigan no, i mean, we will have uncommitted delegates from michigan because of this big vote. But dana, my goal here personally was to get through to the president s campaign that there is no political solution to this problem i dont see how we can win the white house again without winning michigan and i dont think we can win michigan unless the president changes course on gaza. Theres no surrogates. He can send. Theres no wonderful advertising. He can do. I mean, what . A great surrogate. We have our own governor. Thats not the problem. The problem is that he has to actually change course. We need a permanent ceasefire now. We need to stop letting Benjamin Netanyahu set the boundaries of the possible. This is a person who has never been for palestinians to termination in his life im a jew who cares a lot about selfdetermination for my people, dana. But the only way were going to have a secure and peaceful homeland for my people is to also realize the political and human rights of the palestinian people. Netanyahu wont help that happen. Okay. Weve got a president who was the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for so long, whos known all the leaders of israel and palestine for so long, he needs to now lead a peacemaking effort. That can change the way voters here feel about him. Theres nothing he can say. Its got to be about what he does. Thank you. Thank you. Former congressman andy levin. Appreciate your time tonight. Thank you jonah, your thoughts what you can feel, his passion. You can tell you sincere. I really do think that theres a really good chance that this is not a flashing of pan but this is the high watermark of this uncommitted thing thats a lot of talk on twitter. We so someone on the other panel talking about how they want to take this model to other states. The problem with that is that the michigan ballot has this uncommitted line. Weve been talking about that all night long. If you start to change, youre gonna do this on Super Tuesday. Youre going to have to ask people to write in something right . Because its not something that check off. And none of those states as much as theres a groundswell, but this stuff is going to match the arab and Muslim Community turnout we just saw dearborn. So its going to turn it into a talking 0. 0. Thats just that ethnic group, that identity politics group, because the number will trend down right afterwards. But as it relates to what the congressman was saying about the importance of michigan 15 electoral thats fair. And what that matters. Thats why were so focused on tonight. And i think the same question we asked about the haley vote in South Carolina. And tonight is the question we ask here. So whats license now . 40,000 votes for uncommitted. Lets say its 100,000 what slice of that comes home to the democrats in november and what stays resistant to biden because of this issue, we dont have the answer to that right now, but the answer to that is going to determine how much trouble hes in in michigan in the fall . Yeah. And as was the leader of the house progressives just told me tonight said that this issue, the handling of gaza as other world gaza is breaking apart the coalition thats what she said.
