hello and a warm welcome to our viewers joining us in the u.s. and around the world. bianca is back tomorrow. just ahead on "cnn newsroom" -- >> with a pause between israel and hamas expected to continue into wednesday, the question is what happens then. >> it puts the life in threat. if we can bring more hostages back, we are willing to pay that price. >> electronic warfare has expected an advantage. >> gps jamming is basically brute force power. >> would hear on capitol hill, but in public. >> this is really shaping up to be a showdown between hunter biden and the committee. live from london, this is c"cnn newsroom" with max foster and bianca nobilo. >> streets it is wednesday, nov. in gaza the temporary truce is now in what could be its final day. sources say israel has a list of hostages expected to be released in the hours ahead, and we're also learning talks in doha are in consensus about working towards extending the current pause in gaza. earlier a hamas member said the group is striving to extend the truce by using all the cards it has in negotiations. on tuesday, the fifth day of the truce, 12 hostages were released by hamas, that includes ten israelis, all adult women except one 17-year-old girl. two thai nationals were also freed. scott mclean is following the developments and is joining me from istanbul. what are you looking out for in the hours ahead, scott? >> reporter: hey max. it seems like all the parties have a vested interest in the truce being attended, but it seems delicate on the ground. yesterday there was exchanges of fire between hamas and idf soldiers inside of gaza. the israelis say there were two explosives detonated at two separate troop locations and hamas opened fire as well. no serious injuries on the israeli side. hamas tells the story somewhat differently saying this was a field skirmish and that fighters dealt with it. it also says that israel was clearly in violation of this truce and that, look, it is willing to go along with this truce so long as its enemy, israel, is willing to do the same. israel has made quite clear though that it is gearing up for the second phase of this war which is hanging over the heads of thathamas who are pushing foe truce turning into a more permanent ceasefire. the talks to extend this are ongoing as you mentioned in doha. and the expectation is that if everything goes well today with the release of ten more israeli hostages held in gaza, that hamas will offer another list of another ten hostages for tomorrow and this could be extended. but there are only enough hostages, women and children at least, to extend this for another two days. beyond that, we are talking about men, civilians, and we are also talking about israeli soldiers, some of whom are female. and at the moment, hamas says that there are no talks, there have been no talks to actually exchange any soldiers. and it describes two different scenarios. hamas says you could have a partial deal which would deal with the civilians or a comprehensive deal which would deal with the soldiers, but it is demanding a much higher price for those soldiers. something that israel has made clear that it is not willing to pay at this stage meaning emptying all of the prisons in israel, palestinian prisoners. >> what are we hearing about hostages being traded today? >> reporter: yeah, so this is from a member of the israeli kne knesset. he is also former israeli ambassador to the united nations. and he says that, look, there are hostages that are with different groups within gaza. this is something that we heard also from a diplomatic source who says that there may be 40, 50 perhaps hostages being held with groups other than hamas. palestinian islamic jihad. there are other smaller groups as well that may have hostages. but he described it in a different way, he didn't describe it as a transfer or being held by other groups. i'll just let you listen. >> we have brothers that we don't know where they are. hamas actually trading hostages, can you believe that? they are selling hostages to different sggangs in gaza. >> did they sell the beavis brothers? >> i will not go into that but we know that they were selling who is damage hostages between gangs. something we never heard of. >> reporter: so selling and trading are the words that he used. and the beavis brothers by the way, these are israeli children, one is a 10 month old boy, one is a 4-year-old boy that still have not been returned just yet. he was also asked about the possibility of extending the truce. he said that perhaps days, perhaps a week israel is willing to hold fire. he was also asked about the possibility of ending the war entirely in exchange for all of the hostages coming back. and he said point blank israel would never agree to this. >> okay. scott, thank you. six members of one extended family kidnapped by hamas have been released. it includes two children ages 3 and 8, but their father remains captive. a relative told cnn how the family members are doing. >> they are obviously deeply traumatized. we don't know what they saw yet. and what they have been through. obviously it will be a long process of recovery and healing. and we'll be there for them. of course most important thing, they can't really relax and get comfortable, you know, get back to reality until their dad is back. kids need their dad. it is very simple. obviously they are strong kids now and they have been through a lot. and they are open and they are happy to see people and they hug people. you know, they are happy to be back with their familiar surrounding. but obviously their immediate need of their dad is not fulfilled. it is not there. >> and scary to know that the fighting will continue with no guarantees of another pause in the conflict. so getting more hostages out of gaza has to be a top priority she says. when fighting resumes, israeli officials stress the military objectives haven't changed. but u.s. officials are urging to be more precise over the soaring death toll. almost 15,000 killed, mostly civilians, in less than two months according to the hamas controlled military of health in gaza. alex marquardt reports senior officials have been in daily contact with israeli counterparts urging more caution. >> reporter: with a pause between israel and hamas expected to continue into wednesday, a sixth day, the question is what happens then, what does day seven look like. could israel start its military operations up in gaza again or will hamas continue to release hostages. the hope by the biden administration is that the pause does continue and more hostages continue to come out. the quiet goes on for a bit longer they hope and more aid goes into gaza to deal with the catastrophic humanitarian situation. tuesday saw the cia direrector bill burns in dohaha to wowork jujust that. he hasas bececome presidident b point maman on all h hostage i . meetining in dohoha with giqata israeli anand egyptitian offffi. the gogoal is toto broadenen i morere than justst women andnd chilildren and t to trtry to ge and israeli soldiers out, which everyone agrees will be much more difficult. the biden administration is also urging israel that if they start their operations up again militarily in gaza, which they say they will, to be much more careful, to be more cautious, more surgical and precise to try to minimize the often deadly impact on gazan civilians. most of whom are now displaced. le alex marquardt, cnn, washington. joining me now is senior vice president for global oper operations and also former dre director of hostage and rescue recovery. thank you for joining us. i want your insight into what might be going into these negotiations. obviously it is all being done quietly in qatar, but one of the main issues is knowing who the hostages are. and we still don't appear to have clarity on that because hamas doesn't hold all them, so how does that play into the negotiations? >> good morning, max. i think you are right. the challenge is hamas does not hold all of them, but as we've talked about before, information is being gleaned from all of the hostages that have been released. every one of them is being debriefed by intelligence professionals, information is being developed. identifying and trying to locate each of those hostages, even the ones who are not present with hamas, their absence indicates they are probably with another group. and so you can focus collection on palestinian islamic jihad at that point or you can talk about any chatter that is going on amongst the guards or hamas leaders as you are being held. so all those things are being i will elicited during debriefs. >> women and children being kooe released so far. at some point they will have to run out of women and children, if i can put it like that, to release. and we'll move on to men, aren't we, and ultimately idf-serving soldiers. presumably hamas will ask for a hire price for those, an extension of the truce perhaps or more palestinian prisoners in return. >> yeah, so i think that that is where we'll get to the sticking point unfortunately. right now, you knonow, it is pragmatic and practical for both sides, both hamas and israel and the international community to try to get as many hostages out as we can. the women and children i think we will probably accomplish and i think having director burns from the cia over there who is a consummate diplomat, knows the region, is very effective in this region and with groups like hamas, i think that there is a likelihood we'll get it extended and we'll probably get all the women and children out. and i think it is reasonable to think that we'll probably get anybody with a medical condition out or who has been wounded. so i'm hopeful to see that. especially the american who lost his arm during it. but i think that we're going to hit a difficult decision point with getting other men and idf soldiers out. because this is a commodity for hamas and it provides them with power, leverage and human shields and gives them the ability to procc proceed trabt this. >> and one idf released in return for a thousand palestinian prisoners in the past. how do you think israel, the u.s., may look at that sort of trade when it comes to the idf soldiers? >> you hit the nail on the head, max. that is their anchor point in this negotiation for hamas. they will be asking to release over 7,000 palestinians from israeli jails and we're talking about the worst of hamas and other affiliated groups. palestinians, islamic jihad, pflp, these are terrorists. these were not people who were detained because of maybe suspicious activity. these are people who conducted acts. so that will be a price nearly impossible to pay for israel. i'd also advise against it. if hamas comes out of this victorious on the other side, it is only going to empower their movement, their ideology, erode any control that they may have on the west bank and protract the conflict for years to come. and i think some hostages will require rescue and also dismantling of hamas. and as you were pointing to earlier, that requires disciplined precision targeting, a counterterrorism approach when they turn back on military operations where you are going after hamas architecture and leadership. you are gathering intelligence as you are doing that on each ride. you are doing sensitive side explo exploitation, you are interviewing the detainees, you are exploring all that material that you find that allows you to continue to target other hamas leadership and also finding the hostages during that process. >> christopher leery, appreciate your insight. thank you for joining us so early. and we're following breaking news out of japan as well where the coast guard reports a u.s. military osprey aircraft with eight crew members on board has crashed off the coast. a spokesperson says what is believed to be the wreckage has been found and also a deployed lifeboat. one person found and taken to hospital. they have no vital signs but yet to be confirmed dead by a doctor. the osprey has a history of mishaps including a crash in australia back in august that killed three u.s. marines. still ahead, a grieving grandfather returns to their home in gaza where his grandchildren were killed in an israeli world health organization warning that more people in gaza could die from disease and acute health conditions than from israeli airstrikes if the medical infrastructure is not restored. the agency says hundreds of thousands of people in the besieged territory are suffering from chronic conditions like diabetes and cancer but don't have the treatment they need. meanwhile the red crescent society says that around 200 aid trucks have crossed into gaza since friday, but a u.n. official warns that the aid going in at the moment is just a drop in the ocean of humanitarian needs. a senior u.s. official says the u.s. airir lifted more thahan 50 pounds of medical items and food to egypt to be brought into gaza. meanwhile samantha power, administrator for agency for international development, says the increased aid deliveries to gaza should continue and become the new normal. here is what she told kaitlan collins earlier. >> it is absolutely critical and that is why question awe are seeking to take full advantage of the pause, but also to make sure that the flow of trucks and supplies continues, that this becomes a new normal where we now have 240 trucks going in, that is still just a small fraction of the supplieses that flflowed in before t the war be. so sustaining that flow, increasing it further, getting more fuel, more winterization supplies as the climate changes, all of that will be absolutely critical. i convened my international counterparts from all around the world and implored them to increase the amount of funding that they provide to u.n. agencies and nongovernmental organizations. so that cash and actual resources don't become a limiting factor here. it had been that the inspections and getting supplies in were the limiting factors. you'd hate to see it be just a shortage of money on the part of the world food program or unicef or other partners. so that is key in getting again that flow going. but it will be ultimately inadequate without commercial traffic as well accompanying humanitarian traffic. >> that was samantha power. the pause in fighting between israel and hamas has given many families a chance to return home to get their belongings and in some cases bodies of their relatives. jomana karedsheh follows a grieving grandfather who returned to the home where his grandchildren were killed in an airstrike while they excellent. a -- slept. a warning this contains disturbing video. >> reporter: they were inseparable. her grandfather was her whole world. her favorite game, pulling his beard and he would pull her gaza, his family paid the price. he held her in his arms for one last time and hugged her motionless body, opened her eyes and kissed her good-bye. i was asking her to canis me like she used to, but she didn't, he says. i used to kiss her on her cheeks, on her nose, an she would giggle. i kissed her but she wouldn't wake up, he recalls. i held him, fixed his hair. i was wishing, hoping that they were never charged. now, dozens of newly released hostages and their families are also celebrating their freedom. matthew chance takes a look at their loving reunions. >> reporter: the tears are of joy and of sadness. this the moment sharon and her 12-year-old daughter kidnapped on october 7 are reunited with their family. but they know friends and neighbors were murdered and that others remain hostages. relief here is bittersweet. israel is releasing this emotional footage of hostages freed by hamas. traumatized women and children returning to shattered lives. like this 8-year-old and his to israel. cnn's clare sebastian joining us now. there is a lot to take in there, but take us through this nato meeting and why it is so crucial. >> this is part of what they are fighting for, not just to get russia out of their territory, but to take their place in these western institutions, european union and nato. and so this is the first member of the nato ukraine council which is supposed to be nato and ukraine meeting as equals. obviously nato foreign ministers are trying to send a message here that despite what is happening in the middle east, despite the fact that ukraine has fallen out of the headlines for the past couple of months, they are still laser focused on doing this, but obviously ukraine is extremely worried. that is why you see the foreign minister saying today that europe cannot defend itself without ukraine, trying to reinforce the point that this also matters domestically within europe because they are worried, we've seen the far right leader in the netherlands win the most votes, we've seen slovakia's government worried about fatigue and that congress has now spent the best part of several months discussing ukraine aid with barely any progress. so i think that all eyes will be in particular on the u.s. and secretary of state antony blinken. >> and ukraine determined to push forward, but slow progress as ever. >> yeah, it has been a difficult few months. certainly the counter offensive now that we're getting into winter and the weather has been dire the past few days, at least ten people were killed in a terrible snowstorm over the weekend. there is a fear that what the ukraine's top general said at the beginning of november that there will be no deep and beautiful breakthrough he said unless they can come up with some kind of major technological leap. so we've been taking a closer look at one of those areas that ukraine is now focusing on, an area where russia currently dominates. ukraine has hadmitted that. take a look. out with electronic wear fair defenses. do you think electronic water fai -- warfare is one of the things that could turn the tide? >> translator: one tool is not enough. we'll never have as much manpower as russia, but technology can change that, we need to continue scaling it up. >> technology can change that is what they are saying. they won't have as many men or as much industrial
