This morning, the urgent manhunt continues for a mass shooter in maine nearly 36 hours after the shooting rampage that left 18 people dead in a Bowling Alley and bar and grill. Fbi agents have joined the hunt for the suspect who is considered armed and danls. The coast guard is also helping search by air and sea after card was found at a boat launch. We did see s. W. A. T. Teams with armored trucks converge on cards lastknown address. A they spotlighted the house and got a bull horn to say come out with your hands ocup. Nobody was inside. Police tell cnn they will be back in that area today. As for the motive, theres a key theory emerging this morning. Law enforcement sources tell cnn that card recently broke up with his girlfriend and the Bowling Alley and bar and grill are two places that they liked and frequented. His exgirlfriend was signed up to play in a tournament at that restaurant. Were learning the names of three more victims. The manager of the bar and grill, his dad says he died a hero trying to stop the gunman with a knife. Had picked up a knife and went after the gunman to try to stop him from killing other people. Thats when he shot my son to death. We are live in lewiston this morning. At the two shooting locations, you ent immediately after this happened. Its remarkable you covered so many Mass Shootings. To have the suspected shooter on the loose still this morning, what does it feel like there . Very different. Its a very different situation soft this city, the second most populous city in maine, some 40,000 people here, basically shut down because there is an active manhunt. And residents here are waking up to this second morning of an active manhunt, including here in lewiston is right behind me. Thats where eight people were killed and now some of them trying to stop the shooting as it was taking place. Most of the surge operations, the manhunt that we have seen have not been taking place here in lewiston. They have been happening 15 minutes east of here in two towns. Lisbon is where the suspect robert card, his car was found near a boat launch on the river. We saw a lot of Search Activity around there in woods and neighborhoods yesterday. And then in dramatic fashion, in boeden, maine, last night. We saw that operation at one of the last known residences of robert card, where Law Enforcement set off flash bangs and had loud speakers. They were saying if youre in there, please come out. Thats standard operating procedure. They want ed to clear out the house to make sure he wasnt there. Its possible they saw some kind of movement inside that house, but as of last night, did not turn up anything. Were told well go fwook that neighborhood. This is an operation thats taking place on the ground, but also from the air. There were helicopters going by. In fact, we just heard one a short time ago search ing from the air. And on the water as well. You mentioned the coast guard is involved over the ocean, which is a Half Hour East of here. All kinds of inlets and waterways, but also rivers. The boat launch, they have been searching by Air Up And Down that. The coast guard has been searching that river for escape routes. And we know that a rifle was found in his car. He is still very much considered Armed And Dangerous this morning. Which is why theres still that shelter in place order for a lot of people. Lets get more on that now. Lets go to the just in time Bowling Alley where it all began. Omar, this shelter in place order, people are waking up to this second day of it. What are you hearing . Reporter you cant go far without feeling a a bit of unease in the community. Theres not panic or anything like that. Unease is probably the best word to describe it here. As you mentioned, we are as close as police are aa lowing us to get. This is where Robert Cardigan Shooting before making his way minutes later over to your location where that bar and grill is. But when you talk to folks in the area, but when you look at their cell phones, the shelter in place order is going to continue today. School is going to be closed. All out of an abundance of caution. When you drive around town, even just last night, places that would be packed and open, all closed or at the very least empty so people are taking the shelter in place orders very seriously. And we are at the beginning of what is going to be a long Recovery Process for this community. Take a listen to a mother and daughter who survived when the shooting began at the Bowling Alley. Saw someone get shot. I saw Blood Splatter everywhere. And they just fell off their chair and they werent moving. We got a table to flip over. We had a booth in that corner that we use d to put a wall up. But there really isnt much protection. And you know it. The whole time im thinking were sitting ducks. Any minute i was weighing to see his face come around that corner. That was the most daunting part because im laying there on my back, laying flat. And theres a table in front of me, but i have nowhere to go. Thats the thing. At least 18 people were killed in these shootings, but so many more lives were changed forever. Even just trying to change what they went through in those awful moments. And lewiston suspect the biggest town. Still just a community of 35,000 or so. Its hard to go far without meeting someone who either knows someone directly affected by the shootings or they know someone who does. So its going to be a long process of trying to get through this long after they find the suspect in this case, which many in the Community Hope happens soon. Omar, john, thank you very much. He helped track down more than 300 of americas most wanted fugitives. Really appreciate your time. You have so much experience trying to find people to do what these authorities are doing right now. It is 35 hours since the shooting. We have not heard about any leads. It doesnt mean they dont have them. He has not been caught. Why . Thank you for having me on. Condolences to the families. But the bottom line is this. There are a lot of leads out there, but when youre searching for these people, you cant tell it to the media. Because that compromises the lead. But it tells me they are doing all the right things, all the poet colts that we have. They covered the area. They are looking for anybody that might have contact with this guy. Somebody on the inside, but in the meantime, they just have to cover all what hes been through. Thats what they are doing and using technology. The infrared, the thermal machines and so forth. Bottom line is, they are searching just about everywhere they can think of. In your experience, how would a bio like what the suspect has, an outdoorsman, how does that change your approach trying to find him. I mean, the bottom line, we were locking for 1985. He was an avid woodsman, so we searched several wooded areas. The reality is that when youre talking about moving out into the woods, this man power, can you get enough people into areas that you think this man might be. So they have a real arduous task because of the fact that they are talking about he had a boat, maybe he did get in that boat and go to another location in the woods. I think somebody like this with an expert that he was when it came down to the military and so forth, he kind of knew what he was going to do once he went in there and killed these folks. To go through people like butter going through knife. So the bottom line is you can tell this man knew what he was doing. So im saying from that, authorities have to know he had a plan. He had had a plan that after he did what he did, he was going to go somewhere and hunker down. He could be laying low hopieing authorities will begin to back off at some point. How long do people need to shelter in place there . At some point, kids have to go back to school and people have to go back to work. Thats true. Reality of it is, the municipalities, they have to make that determination, how long they want to stay in that mode. But the reality is as long as he stays out there, we looked for a suspect for three months and ended up catching him up in pennsylvania. So i tracked people around the country. We have seen continued rocket strikes coming towards israel. Where do things stand . Yes, there was a second significant Ground Assault by the idf forces on gaza overnight. They were targeting Command Control Centers as well as commanders within the most significant hamas brigade. That was the target overnight. We did just in response take credit for what we just saw, which was a strike of about five rockets here on tel aviv. The alerthouse get from the ierm dome are specific to an area. It was near here. We could see there were about five rockets that came in from gaza. Obviously, they come from the south. To tel aviv. And there was at least either a rocket or part of a rocket that did break through. We could see some smoke not far away from that impact site. And obviously, you dont have an iron dome. Its different there. You have hundreds of israeli strikes a day, but nonetheless, its still the complete randomness that causes the broader fear. I was speaking with someone that i see here every day. The Apartment Building next to them was hit by one of the Rocket Attacks from some brigades that came through. The and that is the reality of daily life. But again here on side, they are protected by the iron dome, at least from those rockets that are coming out of gaza over that short distance. You just explain what its like . Tel aviv was such a bustling city. People were around all the time. Now when these rockets are coming, and i know they get the sirens, but do they all go into the Bomb Shelters . Is that what they do . Reporter they mostly do. When we have been further south and come under a barrage, people do absolutely go for shelter. They know that the sirens are localized. So i have been out on the street, and people just start sprinting. So i have ended up in the closet of sort of a place where donations are gathering. I have ended up in a restaurant cooler, different areas and people do definitely run. And they generally know where to go. You want to take shelter on the north side of the building because these rolkts coming from gaza are coming from the south. Thats a reality of daily life. Again, they are protected by the iron dome. Thats the success rate of those is 9 a 5 to 97 . When we came under the barrage, rockets get through. Rockets are part of the hospital. So that definitely is the reality of it. And the iron dome Protection System emphasizing rockets from gaza over that short distance is extremely effective. You can visualize what its like and you have experienced it yourself multiple times. Down the street from the bar, which is the site of where eight of the 18 people were killed here in lewiston in these dual Mass Shootings. This is where part of it took place. And we are learn ing so much moe about the people at these two locations, which by the way, are really pillars of this community. Its where people would go on average nights to hang out. They had regulars at the Bowling Alley and the bar. The bar was known as corn hole night, where the Deaf Community. You get a sense of how integrated they are to this community, the second most populous city in maine, where everyone knows each other. Lets get much more information on the victims that we know about so far. What were learning is that these victims come from all walks of life. One of the victims just 14 years old. Its becoming more and more clear that some of these victims fought for their lives and tried to stop the shooter. The manager any tud of what happened coming into focus as authorities remove the bodies of some of those who perished in the shooting at the bar and grill restaurant. Police say of those who were killed, ought died at the bar, including leroy walkers son joseph. His father says his son died when he tried to stop the shooter. My son actually because hes manager of the bar and everything else. He picked up a Butcher Knife and went after the gunman to try to stop him from killing other people. Thats when he shot my son to death. He tried to save some more l lives, and he ended up losing his life. 40yearold Bryan Mcfarland identified as one of the victims. His sister says he was deaf and there for a regular wednesday Night Gathering of members of the Deaf Community and their corn hole tournament. His sister, who was also deaf, says his death is deeply felt if her family and the community. I want people to know how big this has impacted the Deaf Community. We have lost four. We have lost three other friends as well from this tragic incident in this community. Its a huge loss. Another participant, 39yearold peyton ross was kill ed. His brother confirmed to cnn he leaves behind a 2yearold daughter. Also killed, 42yearold father of five, arthur strout, his father confirmed they were together right before the attack. The crazy part is just being with him just before it happened. Ten minutes before it happened. Minute was from the bar, more victims and more tragedy. Police say seven were killed at just this time recreation center, a Bowling Alley in lewiston, including its manager. 34yearold tommy conrad is survived but his 9yearold daughter. Also killed, 53yearold trisha asselin. We were bowling and we heard a big bang. I didnt know what it was until we heard another shot. We just kept running and running. And i kept asking my sister. Two hours later. Somebody came out and said to call 911. And when she called 911 to save everybody, she lost her life because of it. My sister is a hero. Thats what were hearing. One painful story after another. I want to give you more updated information about those killed. According to reuters, bill young and his 14yearold son were among those who died at the Bowling Alley. When it comes to warning for so many in the community, its difficult for them to do that. Knowing that the shooter has not been caught. Fathers, sons, brothers, sisters, all lost here, so much lost in this community. Which is grieving this it morning, trying to grieve. Even though they are shut into their houses right now and fearful of what could come next as this shooter is still on the run this man shunt underway. Thank you very much. Back to you. Knowing people and understanding them is also a big thing to joe. Loved by many, loved by myself. He would love back to everybody. So i know he would do such a thing to try to save lives and not let somebody hurt people that he loved. This is family. This place brings thousands of people in a year. And joe is usually the first face they see coming through the door. And the last one they see going out the door. Its going to be hard for a lot of people. For myself and my family and his wife and grandchildren, stepchildren, they are a loving family. For someone to do this, for so many families as well as main, its just crazy it leaves you an empty hole that i dont know how it will ever be fulled. Were looking at these wonderful pictures of the two of you together, as youre helping everyone remember your son and his smile. Our heart is with his wife and his whole family as well. He did so much to help people that needed the most. He was about to raise money for veterans. Yes, him and i had talked about it. I connected with a good friend of mine thats a veteran. And they were going to meet. I believe the next day. Thats not going to happen now, but Hopefully Somebody can pick up that ball and run with it. But its a very short time. I dont know if its going to happen at this time. Im struck by your remarks yesterday that you do not harbor hate or anger or the man who took your sons life. I wonder how thats possible, despite your groef. You have to put that part of it out of your mind. You have to let the law do whatever needs to be done. If this person was at the time in his right mind, i believe he would have been a loving person just like we are. Theres something that went wrong. I just hate him. I believe in the lord. I think the lord will prevail in the end here. I guess we cant make our choices on people. I cant hate this person. I have been taught different than that. And i believe in the law and i have to feel that way. You cant run around this world hating people. If you do, these kind of things will happen more and more. There maybe individual things that happen, but if it you hate, and thaw hate drives you crazy is, youre going to hurt people. I have had my ups and downs in my life, and i done want anyone to hurt me and i dont want to hurt anybody. Im sure this man, whatever happened to his mind, im sure he wasnt born to be a killer. And instead of that, that would have never believed this would have happened. All i can say is im sorry that its happened to all of us. Im sorry what may happen to him. God will prevail. Hate will never bring my son back. It wont. Its just amazing to hear you with so much love in your heart, le leroy. For people know, you also lost your daughter 25 years ago in a car accident. So to have to lose two children and still be able to have such faith and such love in your heart is remarkable. What can everyone watching do for you . How can can we help you . Just pray for everybody. Pray for the people that passed away with my son. Pray to the lord that this doesnt happen again in our community. None of us would have ever believed this, if we would have asked each other five days ago if this was a possibility, nobody would have believed it, nobody would have thought it. We really have a loving community. We have two cities here. They both believe that their city is the best city. Thats the way we are. But we love each other. We travel back and forth. We make plans together, sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. And as a city councillor, i know a lot of their feelings. They know a lot of mine. The two cities try to make them the proudest place to be. We dont go around shooting each other. I just hope we can get through this, get it behind us so that we can start healing and thank god we have you people to keep our loved ones alive for a few more days. Has, you have been working on a multilateral basis, do you feel like you have the best visibility into the different pathways of that assistance . The sanctions are particularly complicated in this case, given hamas is the governing body. Theres some charities that have been labeled that have not been sanctioned yet. As it pertains to hamas, how do you make that distinction at this point . Wz. The most important thing to do is Financial Institutions who are transacting money that goes to many of these charities to make sure that they are allowing for legitimate transactions that allow assistance to flow to gaza, while making sure the organization that hamas set up to try to divert the flows do not get access to that financing. Thats why im here in the uk today because we want the to make sure countries take similar actions to help ensure that hamas doesnt get access to funding, but the people get access to the humanitarian aid they need, as well as financing. Todays list of sanctioned individuals includes hamas official in direct connect in iran and some officials as well. The u. S. Has had strikes tied to officials and proxies. At what point will the u. S. Consider expanding owl export sanctions on the country of iran . Its important to recognize we put in place more than 300 sanctions against iran, including petro chemistry sanctions.
