On the border with the state of israel wanted us to live on the border. Wanted him to live on the border and now they should pay back for all these, its like what i said, just need to bring him back and bring everybody back. Im sorry for what youre going through and your family is going through. I hope they all come home soon. Thankou. Cnns coverage in israel continues. The source with Kaitlin Collins starts right now. Good evening. Im Kaitlin Collins. Welcome to the source. A live update on the latest on the ground in israel with Anderson Cooper in just a moment. I want to start with some ominous Breaking News for donald trump. Im not even talking about how a third former lawyer of his just took a plea deal in State Of Georgia earlier today. Which jenna ellis did do in a courtroom through tears. More on that in a second. But according to a new report tonight, Special Counsel jack smith has secured his most valuable witness yet in federal election Interference Case against the former president , his final cheech of staff mark meadows. Abc news is reporting tonight that meadows has been granted immunity and has met with smiths team at least three times this year alone including once before a Federal Grand Jury while he had that immunity. According to abc, meadows allegedly told investigators that he did not believe the election was stolen and that trump was, quote, being dishonest when he claimed victory after the polls closed in november of 2020. For more on this Breaking News and what could it mean, i want to bring the New York Times Political Correspondent Maggie Haberman and ellie honig. Cnn hasnt confirmed this reporting yet. If this is the case, if mark meadows did get this level of immunity and hes there testifying, how devastating is that for donald trump sf. Based on the details in the abc neews story, they show Mark Meadows Disvowing his own book. Under oath. I dont know what it means, because i dont totally understand the description of the type of conditions he was testifying under. I dont know whether immunity is being used or whether theres something more tailored. I dont know. I assume that will become clear as time goes on. Ellie, what does that mean what would be the difference between a proper agreement . A lot of different flavors of cooperation. Three different levels. The most informal, a proffer agreement, a witness comes in, offer these items and we want to hear what you say. Its the feeling out stage. The next level up is immunity, formal immunity, okay, we prosecutors are interested in what you have to say, we think its truthful and important. Youve taken the fifth. We say as prosecutors well go to a court order giving you immunity. Meaning that youll testify fully and we wont use your testimony against you and for all practical purposes we wont prosecute you and then the top level is if you think the person has participated in a crime and has to be charged accordingly then you enter into what we know a full cooperation agreement. Youll plead guilty. To what we charged with you and well enter into an agreement that youll give full testimony at the end of that. Prosecutors will write a letter to your lawyers. If that was second tier, i mean, there was a court order, what would that mean for what hes telling them in a Federal Grand Jury . Prosecutors dont hand out Immunity Deals like candy. What youre saying as a prosecutor well give you a free pass here, essentially, two things, one, we believe this testimony, we think its correct, true and credible. And two, we need it. You have to do internal paperwork at doj, we have this witness, hes taken the fifth, heres why its worth givie ing a pass. Something that jack smith approves or Merrick Garland . Jack smith as Special Counsel is giving enough independence that he can make that approval himself. Were hearing from a trump spokesperson tonight. They say, wrongful, unethical leaks underscore how detrimental this is to democracy. Mark meadows was doing something with prosecutors because his name wasnt on that indictment that came out in washington. Correct, very little of mark meadows actually in that indictment carefully identifiably himself. He was dealing with jack smiths team. I dont want to say cooperating. But dealing with georgia, which he clearly turned his back on and where he was charged. The fact that he was charged in georgia. But this raises for me anyway some questions about how much immunity he would be given because hes already a problematic witness in a lot lot of ways. He wrote a whole book that he testified much the opposite to, right, he gave a bunch of other public statements, theres a lot of things that a Defense Lawyer could use to try to poke holes at him. I glad you brought the book up. What abc is reporting tonight is one of the quotes that mark meadows told to jack smiths team, obviously we didnt win, is what he told them. And the election that was stolen, rigged from the liberal media, also in the book the people who rigged this election knew eventually these irre irregularities would come to light and attacked anyone dare ask questions. If youre jack smith, if youre a grand jury, testifying now, his book that came out of election. Im having flashback to my prosecution years. The reality is in Perfect World someone like mark meadows would come clean right off the bat and wouldnt have lied to the public for three years but the reality is sometimes you have to take your coop ray or thes as they come. If theyre going to be on the inside of a crime they did something bad usually and the question is, do you believe that person has fully come clean and two, can you put this person in front of the jury . He zmr were kind of getting into the weeds of this. Obviously the three of us have followed this closely. If youre sitting at home and trying with a white board good luck with that. But what do you why does this matter . Why is this bad for trump if this accurate . The doj believes they can use mark meadows testimony. He was right hand of donald trump. Yes, mark meadows is also somebody who to the point of what, you know the things he said at various points, we talked about this before on air, mark meadows is somebody whos known for saying Different Things to different audiences, he was known as trying to please whoever he was talking to and this was the first example we have seen in detail look, he testified in georgia for several hours. So theres examples there that are under oath or at least but this feels a little different in terms of the specifics of what he said. Abc saying bluntly, this wasnt stolen, he supposedly told trump they werent proving this and he had questions about it. I think people like bill barr and all the people there would have a lot of questions. And so i think were going to hear more, right, about what he may or may not have said. Mark meadows was at the center at so much of this. He was talking to so many people. So, in the context of all of this, this report came out tonight, also this morning, something happened very quickly to where only one cnn reporter was in the courtroom because it came together so quickly in georgia, jenna ellis, she accepted a plea deal. She pleaded guilty today in the State Of Georgia in that election of Interference Case, i want remind our viewers who jenna ellis is, what she used to said previously and what she said in court today. An elite Strike Force Team thats working on behalf of the president and the campaign to make sure that our constitution is protected. President trumps right that there was widespread fraud. We have this overwhelming evidence of fraud. This election was fraudulent and corrupt zbld all of these false and fraudulent. I endeavor to represent my client. To provide me with true and reliable information. If i knew then what i know now i would have declined to represent donald trump in these postelection challenges. Maggie, as someone who read her tweets, its kind of stunning to hear the tears today. Deep regret, a different thing than remorse. But yes, what she was saying for a very long time was that, you know, donald trump was in the right and she was going to be right. She was one of the biggest proponents around this. She was traveling with Rudy Giuliani to these hearings. Two other attorneys in georgia, shes the one who actually really had the most contact with trump and she had the most contact with giuliani, shes actually in a very different position than they are. How bad is this for donald trump . Maggie hit on the main point. I want to know as prosecutor, what was her dealings with donald trump . Its notable to see her, she was so aggressive in pushing the Election Fraud lie. You can see the contrast in that clip and its notable that shes saying its b. S. And she knows it. Prosecutors may soon that. Ellie and maggie, lot of developments tonight. Thank you both. Up next, were going to go back live to the ground in israel. Anderson cooper is there. Disturbing new audio played out loud today at the u. N. A hamas Fighter Bragging to his parents about killing jews in israel. Tonight cnn has obtained disturbing audio and im not even sure disturbing goes far enough to describe what it is youre about to hear. Its of a hamas terrorist they say two called his parents to brag about how many jews he killed during that october 7th attack on israel. The terrorist in audio claims to be calling from a phone of a woman he murdered. I should note cnn cant confirm the audio, part of this push by israeli officials to remind the world of the heinous acts that happened that day. Anderson cooper joins me now live in tel aviv, anderson, obviously weve spoken to israeli officials what theyre trying to do by playing that audio out is to remind people of atrocities. The push theyre making as people are waiting to see what israel is going to do with the Ground Invasion, and kind of making their argument for what happens next. Reporter i mean, look, its been just 17 days since the slaughter took place here and i think theres many people here in israel who feel that much of the worlds moved on or no longer wants to hear the stories or and its just now that we are really learning the full and not even the full were just starting to learn the details of what happened on october 7th. And those details like that audio, are just sickening and something its something new. I mean, some of the things that we saw here, it wasnt just the personal brutality looking people in the eyes as they were slaughtered. It was the desire to videotape it with your iphone and to call your parents about it and brag about it to your parents and when a 75yearold woman in nir oz was shot in her living room the gunman gained access to her facebook account and they live streamed an image of her laying on the ground in pool of blood and her family and friends got that facebook alert to logon and look at it and thats how members of her family that kind of personal terror is something that is something new and were seeing just the documentation, the desire for killers to document on a large scale what they were doing to use that for propaganda purposes, to show off to their friends, its this stuff is just now coming to light. And i mean, what im struck with that is its everywhere. So many of these parents of children, their family members, their relatives who are still being held hostage theyre having to look at a lot of these videos that hamas is posting on telegram channels, looking for any shred of information about their loved ones and having to see all of this. I mean, this is you know, there was such a lack of information early on and chaos and confusion here there wasnt information from the idf the idf was trying to hunt terrorists who were still roaming around along the border and families still are looking through ji jihadist videos online and looking through these videos online just for a glimpse, some word of their loved one and it is, you know, an dignitindignit top of an indignity. Families of over 200 hostages still desperate for information. The families and they supporters with outside the United Nations including the family of a 23yearold american, theyre demanding answers about his condition, his whereabouts after he was attacked and kidnapped by hamas at the site of that nova Music Festival on october 7th. In attack his left hand, part of his arm were severed from his body. His parents Rachel Goldberg and paul are here with me in studio. Rachel, something that you said today that struck me, you still have no answers. Right, right. How do you deal with that on a daily basis . Well, ive said this many times. We live in a Parallel Universe from when this started to happen, were like in this other dimension than people who havent had this kind of trauma happen. We talk to other families with children who are missing or other loved ones who are missing who feel exactly the same. For us we try very hard every day to work and work to try and figure out other ways to find out information, to help push the cause of how do we get all of these hostages home. We stay very busy whats the latest youve heard from the u. S. Government the Israeli Government, has anyone given any kind of update or a glimmer of hope from these talks that are happening behind the scenes . No, got no information. No updates. And no specific reasons to have a glimmer of hope other than what we hold on. Thats driven on by focus on the mission, not based on anything weve heard or learned. I know one thing that is kind of youve been piecing this information together yourself, you have team at your home in jerusalem on trying to figure out more, something you learned from a woman whos in the shelter with your son, as hamas was attacking it, Throwing Grenades into it that a man came in and did something really remarkable. It the ally made me feel like this whisper of positivity, because she explained that when all the kids from the Music Festival went running into this bomb shelter, there was a man who worked at the kibbutz across the street who also ran in for shelter and as hamas was getting closer he said to the kids, everybody be quiet im going to go outside and talk to them and he went outside and in arabic he explained im a muslim, everybody in there is muslim, its my family. You dont have to go check. Trying to save them, because he knew, you know, bad things would be happening to them. And he could have just gone out and in arabic say im a muslim, yeah, okay, great, they would have left him be. Instead because he was trying to protect these 29 kidssmushed in there, they beat them brutally. Thats when the whole attack began. Just that he had the courage to do the right thing, and in a scary situation, to be really human in a place and in a moment where the whole world was upsidedown. It really just made me feel hope that theres still goodness in the world. When were so bifurcated and its us versus them. Its not. When you look at the video that anderson showed you of your son i know that was a remarkable moment for you to be able to see him. Hes gravely wounded, though, and its tough to even see that video, when you know what kind of condition he is at least medically, he needs real attention and when you see whats happening with these talks, hamas wants more fuel and a ceasefire to let more hostages out, do you think a ceasefire would be helpful at this point . Look, our main interest is bring home our son, we understand theres also a national interest, although to be honest through both of those lenses i think we should be buying time and so youd like more time . Id like more time. I think all the Hostage Families feel that way. Anyone that ive spoken to, its hard to say no, go ahead, go in, this Vulnerable Group of 200 whatevers left, 218 people, let them feel more vulnerable. Counterintuitive if youre one of the relatives of those loved ones. Well see, well see what happens. Do you fear that if israel does forward with this Ground Invasion that makes the release of your son just by practical terms of how ugly do you think it makes his release less likely . I mean to be honest with you, i tonight think theres a rational playbook here. So i dont know what the intentions are long term, short term. War, ceasefire. I dont know you know the psyche of the people in charge in hamas who are deciding the fate of these 216 or 218, the number keeps changing. Theyve released four people. Then the number went up again. Its just a big unknown. It seems from testimonies from the four who have been released a little bit that theyre spread out the hostages, theyre separated, many of them at least are apparently deep, deep underground in hidden tunnels. Its chaos already. As things escalate, that chaos is not going to be diminished. Lot of people watching right now who are sitting at home wondering how you have the strength to come on and speak in an interview, go to the United Nations, get out of bed, what would you say to them . I really think honestly we get a lot of very encouraging whatsapps and emails. I honestly think i dont any parent who wouldnt do what were doing to save their kid. I just dont. I dont think what were doing is unusual. For this situation. I just think this situation is really unusual. So people arent put in this situation. But theres no parent whos not going to run to the end of the earth to save their kid. I think that ive said theres no partial success here, its not like we can be 50 successful or 98 successful, either we bring hersh home alive or we dont. When its that black or white theres no choice but to run 21, 22 hours a day, hop on planes, hop off planes to try to accomplish that mission. Yeah, were all hoping that youll be reunited with him soon. Thank you for coming on and for being gracious for coming and speaking with us. And talk to us with this very different situation. Thank you rachel and john. Well be back in just a moment. The power goes out and we still have wifi to do our homework. And thats a good thing . Great in my book who are you . No power . No problem. Introducing stormready wifi. Now you can stay reliably connected through Power Outages with unlimited cellular data and up to 4 hours of battery backup to keep you online. Only from xfinity. Home of the xfinity 10g network. Tonight more details about the 2,000 u. S. Forces who have now been placed on high aall right for potential deployment to the middle east. Among them are experts in complex Military Urban Environments and military explosives. The pentagon says that u. S. Troops have been attacked at least 13 times in just the last week by iranianbacked militias in iraq and syria. On top of that Secretary Of State blinken is warning given those attacks that the u. S. In his words will act swiftly and decisively if its attacked by iran or by the militias that iran backs. What does it tell you that these explosive experts are among those being prepped to potentially deploy to the middle east given what were seeing happen not just in israel but on its borders. First, kaitlin, its not a surprise to have these kind of experts, its part of a bigger package and when youre talking about the secretary of defense signing off on a ptdo, they put this package that could help israel in this kind of environment. Specifically, the explosive ornate critical importantly during an incursion into gaza. The israelis face, not only ambushes, for the kind of attacks that youre showing on the screen right now, its going to be a very tough environment for those tanks and personal carriers and bulldozers and engineer equipment to move through areas. One of the things that will be in place along those routes are improvised explosive devices and youll start hearing a term called its explosively formed pen traitors, efp, particularly designed by iranians and they can sear through some of these armored vehicles, theyre very tough to diffuse and define. A plague on u. S. Soldiers in iraq, we know theyre deadly and i think the Israeli Forces are going to see those as they go into gaza. Yeah, i mean, thats kind of been when we talked about the Israeli Forces. Lot reservists have been mobilized preparing to confront. That questions what is happening with the Prime Minister, benjamin netanyahu, someone who has been cautious about military operations, given what you just laid out, what these soldiers may be facing when they go into gaza, this delay and why israel hasnt gone into gaza yet in. Certainly. Its a series of things, its first of all the mobilization of 300,000, four times as many israel has mobilized in the last two decades. Secondly, these are young troopers a majority of them. Israel has a very good Reserve Force and theyre competent and capable but they havent deployed into this kind of scenario that theyre going to see their urban environment thats gaza. When you go into an operation you dont just roll in with these tanks and personal carriers, you have intelligence drive your operation, because theyve taken eye off the ball of gaza for the least five years they dont have as much intelligence as they should. What are their objectives . Where do they go . The Tunnel Complex exacerbates the issue. Before i let you go, i want to ask you about the decisionmaking. Signs of the infighting. The New York Times noted that netanyahu and his Defense Minister earlier this year fired him and then unfired him. They had to put out this statement ensuring the public theyre working in cooperation. If theres a disconnect among those three, how much does that affect what happens on the ground to these soldiers . Theres been a rift between the military and the government over the last several years, thats been an open source reporting, its been in the israeli newspaper, so what were talking about is trying to get on the same sheet of music when youre putting young israelis in harms way. Difference of opinion of Prime Minister versus Defense Minister versus a Coalition Government the guy that netanyahu brought in benny gantz, he wasnt a big fan of netanyahu, certainly differences between individuals, personalities matter in these kind of things, lit cause some challenges in terms of getting a plan thats workable, that the military can execute and achieve success and under these kind of situations its going to be divot. Thank you for joining me. Thank you. Ahead, well focus on whats happening in gaza, eight trucks that were loaded with water, with food, with medicine, did make it into gaza today. But its too little too late for the six hospitals in the region that are closed. The crisis thats unfolding in gaza, next. In one of oils rich part of the planet yet of the 28 trucks that were supposed to go into gaza today, were told only 8 made it through the rafah crossing, just 8, according to a United Nations relief agency, none of those were carrying fuel major dispute with israel tonight. W. H. O. Said six hospitals in gaza have been forced to close because they dont have any fuel. Powering the generators and giving these hospitals power and because of the lives of almost 130 preemie babies are at risk tonight. Just to get a sense of whats happening on the ground, what people are living through, im joined tonight im so glad youre here with me. Your little sister is in gaza. She sent a Voice Message earlier describing their living situation, its in arabic. We have translated it here. I want our audience to be able to listen to what she said. She says every day is like a nightmare and that somehow the situation gets worse than it was before. Which i mean its hard to get worse. Babies not having medicine. What goes through your mind when you think of what your family is living through right now . You know, im absolutely horrified at what my family is going through for no other reason than simply existing. The only home weve ever known. My father is 08 years old, paralyzed. My mother is in her late 60s and shes blind. The situation is incredibly unbearable and overwhelming and this is reality that am also enduring at a distant 24 7, just thinking of the circumstances theyre going through is consuming and truly difficult that, you know, were having to go through this tragedy. Your dad is paralyzed and you said your mom is blind. Have you been able to speak to them in. Not in the past few days. Ive heard from my sister about family through voice notes. But i havent had the chance to hear the voice of my parents and they havent had the chance to hear my voice. This these days im simply time stamping the last messages ive received from my family. Thats unfathomable that youre waiting on a text from your family that just says one word and its just alive. Yes, i mean, thats the reality of our situation right now and you know the tragedy of it all is what were seeing unfold in the gaza strip, it seems to be, you know, worsening with the support of most major powers and for my parents, and for myself, we just have to wonder, why, what wrong have we done . What wrong have all the families and all the people going through have they done. Every day im wondering if my family is going to be next. What is it like to just be wondering that, as youre sitting here and speaking with Lieutenant General about a what a Ground Invasion could look like, if the Israeli Government was listening, what would you want to say to them . I would simply say, not just to the Israeli Government but to every decisionmaker involved in tragedy and all the crimes were witnessing being committed against us, theres another way, you know, around this. Its interesting that you mentioned the segment before mine. It was a jux that position of all the buildup in the pipeline and all the human beings whose lives are being reduced to nothing, being vilified for no other reason than simply existing. I was talking to a friend earlier, the only way we could rationalize it is by assumption that palestinians arent human. Thats where we are at. Our very existence. Beyond the politics and discussions taking place this is very existential to us and its very, very scary. Terrifying. And youre human and im so sorry what your family is going through its important for people to hear what your parents and your little sister is going through. Dorgham tahank you. Such a critical time globally, here at home, it just makes whats happening on capitol hill look even merry deck louse than what it would. Whats happening in israel and gaza. On capitol hill a third republican speaker nominee has just dropped out of the race just hours after he was just nominated. Right now on capitol hill theres voting taking place, aid to israel hangs in the balance as well as to ukraine and otheh places, well be live and get an update in just a moment. Oh boy. If you are having Trouble Keeping Track of the dysfunction and chaos, and im putting it lightly, in the House Republicans right now, but clearly its not a job everyone really wants. Maybe a lot of people want, but they cant necessarily get it. Right now, House Republicans are huddled, again, behind closed doors, trying to sort this out. This comes, after a another episode of internal chaos. The third nominee, for speaker has failed. And so dropped out of the race. And joining me now, a melanie zanona, who im imagining has crossed a lot of names. Melanie, some of the names that im looking at now its like wait, who, which one is this . I mean, they like running through the entire roster of House Republicans, it feels like. Yes, scraping the bottom of the barrel here. But look, this is the fourth time republicans are now trying to huddle behind closed, doors to select their nominee for speaker. The fourth time in three weeks. And, just twice alone today, i should point out. Right, now there are five candidates were initially in the, race they have been whittling those candidates down to a secret ballot vote. It is down now to keep two candidates, that is mike johnson, a member of the house judiciary committee, and also byron donalds, hes a House Freedom caucus member from florida. But caitlin, there is a big warning sign on the last ballot. And that is at 34 republicans voted for someone other than one of those candidates. So, that is a huge issue for either of those candidates. And in fact, they made a motion to figure out who those numbers were. 33 of them were for kevin mccarthy, one of them was for jim jordan. And, just a sign of the enormous distrust right now in the race. Some lawmakers are now suspecting that mccarthy and his allies, are behind that move. So, just a massive amount of anger and frustrations. Lets listen to what some of those members had to say. For its outrageous, it really is, its outrageous. I am very upset, the calls we are getting everything else, it just feels so we cant manage. Get it done, like honestly at this point, it has been the same theme for a week. This is beyond frustrating. We need to get our act together, as we say. And get our head of our here. My fear is that if we keep doing this, somebody is going to end up siding with the democrats. And caitlin, as we were speaking, im actually learning that mike johnson, one of those numbers that i was talking about, has just clinched the nomination for speaker. But as we have, seen that does not mean that that number is going to be able to get 217 votes, on the floor. So the next step here is that republicans will huddle, once again tomorrow here, at 9 am tomorrow, theyre gonna use some more roll call votes to find out, behind closed doors, whether mark johnson has two 70. But just a massive amount of uncertainty, and distrust right now in the republican ranks, caitlin. Yeah, not only does it not mean that they could get 2 to 17, they are still doomed for everyone else. We will see if it is different for the congressman from louisiana. Melanie zanona, thank you for that reporting. Up next, we have new information that we are getting in, on how hamas pulled off that surprise, brutal, barbaric attack on israel, on october 7th. That, in a moment
