The possibility of himself serving in that position before he has indicated he is opposed to that and this shows a desperate moment that republicans are in, jake and there are other possible candidates who can yet emerge and try to run for the Spook Speakership and they will run into the same problem, and nationally with Kevin Mccarthy who was pushed out of The Speakership that they would have a difficult, if not impossible time of getting to the 217 votes needed to be elected speaker given the significant divisions that are still within this badly divided republican conference traying tra tra traying to figure on the a way forward and jim jordan could lose the vote by potentially a worse margin than yesterday. It is unprecedented and frankly, embarrassing. Well get back to the vote that well see happen soon, but now lets go to israel and the american president and President Biden and the Anger Rippling across arab capitals specifically about that incident at the hospital. Cnns Kaitlan Collins is in tel aviv where President Biden just wrapped up his trip and kaitlan, we just got this consequential statement from the National Security council. We should note it is not unheard of for the palestinian authorities, the hospitals and the Health Ministry which are controlled by hamas which the u. S. Government does label a Terrorist Organization. It is not unheard of for them to misfire and kill their own people accidentally and blame it on israel and it does seem as though that is what the National Security council believes happened here. Yeah. And jake, this comes after a lot of uproar and unrest that happened as a result of that explosion at that hospital in gaza with a lot of governments and even some lawmakers blaming the israeli government, as, of course, you saw palestinian authorities also doing similar yesterday, and now we do have a clear statement and one of the clearest that weve gotten yet from the u. S. Administration saying that they do not believe israel was responsible for that explosion. This is from the National Security council, President Bidens National Security council, and the Spokesman Says in a quote, while we continue to collect information our Current Assessment based on analysis of Overhead Imagery Intercepts and open Source Information is that israel is not responsible for the explosion at the hospital in gaza yesterday, and jake, that is the most clear statement we have gotten in writing yet, but of course, one just came from the president himself standing over my shoulder a few moments ago when he said that they did believe based on what they have assessed that it was an errant rocket that was fired by a Terrorist Group in gaza that was responsible for what happened at that hospital yesterday, and obviously, that is hugely consequential of a statement for the president of the United States to back israel up in those denials based on not just what israel has said and he said based on his own pentagons assessment, jake, given what we have seen happen. Part of this trip is not happening because of that. He was supposed to go on to jordan and meet with the leaders there. The president of egypt, as well. Those are meetings that are not happening. Hes going back to the United States now, and that is certainly significant, jake, and of course, this entire trip was intended to not only just come here and show solidarity with israel and also to meet with other leaders in the area to figure out the path forward and of course, he only met with one world leader and that was the israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu here and those meetings centered on humanitarian aid which he said israel had agreed to let him come through egypt expect to let it come into that and into gaza and that was significant that they have not been able to get any aid through the crossing so far. We havent heard comments from the egyptians yet jake and that would be consequential and its a wait and see situation to see if gets through and weve seen in the past few days where they said the Rafah Crossing was going to open only for people to rush there and for it to not open and thats a question of the followthrough here what this is going to look like and also what are the tangible achieve ams coming after this visit with the president saying it wasnt israel behind that explosion and that humanitarian aid is going to flow into gaza. Right. One of the things thats important for this visit, i believe, that President Biden was hoping to talk to the leaders of jordan and other arab countries about is what happens after israel achieves its goals from gaza and after they decimate the leadership of hamas and what happens for the Palestinian People . Can arab countries be part of the solution and obviously, if you cant talk to the leaders of jordan, egypt and other countries, he cant come up with those solutions. Yeah. Hell have a phone call with the president of egypt on the way home and the leaders of jordan. You heard President Biden, he said it in his own words and actually having the white house has acknowledged that it is a setback that those meetings are not happening in person and for a u. S. President to come here, jake, to the middle east and to have those leaders cancel on him and say that that is why they cannot come, that is a remarkable statement in and of itself. The white house will not deny that when you talk to officials. Youve heard some of them on the record talk about why theyre not doing that and what that looks like and they do acknowledge, jake, that it is a setback and meaningful. The last time the president was in israel i was with him and he went to saudi arabia after that. You are not seeing meetings like that happen and this is an each more heightened period of time given the conflict and the war that we are seeing play out right before our eyes. Kaitlan collins in israel. Thank you so much and now over to dana who has been talking to House Republicans all morning. Do your sources believe jim jordan has the votes . No. Nobody here that im talking to and especially people close to jim jordan believe that he suddenly has the votes to become Speak Speaker in this vote today. You earlier used the word embarrassing. For more than two weeks a speakerless congress in that dome behind me, most republicans who are serving in that House Of Representatives agree with you that it is embarrassing and yet, jake, i have spoken to House Republicans. These are members who have used similar language even though they sit on different part of the conservative question and that is the question right now, how much pain do republicans in the house need to take . How much do they want to endure before they get to the place where they have a house speaker, and manu mentioned some of this in his reporting, what we are looking for today is whether first and foremost, whether or not jim jordan has fewer republican votes than he did yesterday which was probable even beyond possible. The other is david joyce. Jim jordans fellow republicans from ohio who has said publicly that he wants to make a motion to give Patrick Mchenry who is the temporary speaker who has virtually no powers more powers. The question at this point is when will he strike with that . Will he do it after the second vote that jim jordan is expected to lose . Will he be a little bit longer . Nobody knows the answer to this because the threshold for pain, political pain, perception, the pain of perception and all of that seems to be quite high when youre looking at these House Republicans, despite the very real situation that this world is in and again, so many republicans who are serving behind me. They understand how bad this looks. All right, dana bash, thank you so much. On capitol hill, i think we can all agree on that, looks bad. It looks real bad in the immortal words of elaine bennis. Let me start with you. We do have some news here from capitol hill, jim jordan says he wants to put two measures to a vote this morning, electing him as speaker and whether more power should be given to interim speaker Patrick Mchenry. So those are the two measures he wants to put forward. I think yi have a feeling of which way you think it will go, although ive been wrong before. Rarely. Rarely. I think the house is inclined to deny jim jordan The Speakership, right . Again and again and again. He sort of bullied his way here. That didnt leave many friends or much support for him, so hes seen he has a majority of the majority and he does and well see what happens today f its 25 or if its 30. People didnt take too kindly to the way that he has conducted himself up until now, right . With the bullying and the pressure campaign, and also he doesnt have much of a record, right . If you think of the people who are in this seat before him, they had legislative accomplishments and theyve been in leadership and hes been an outside agitator and so now people dont want to see him in that post and well see what the other measure gets. I imagine this will be more popular and people like Patrick Mchenry and it is ridiculous that he is in that spot with no power and they clearly need to get something done in the house particularly given the State Of The World right now. You know, the great irony here is that jim jordan has to negotiate with people he used to call corrupt members of the establishment, the cartel that is Running Washington and suddenly now and about a handful of them desert him yesterday and now hes got to go to them and say to them, id like your vote after a long tenure of doing nothing, but deriding them and saying that they dont belong in the Republican Party anymore, that its a new Republican Party and a lot of them are saying, you know what . Sorry. We kind of remember the way things went with you and we dont trust you and he doesnt have that kind of well, that reservoir of trust as someone who has raised a lot of money for people. As nia points out as someone with a great legislative record, he has none, and you know, these socalled moderate conservatives are saying, you know what . I dont think so. Why do i feel like somewhere, john boehner is a glass of wine having a glass of wine. Neck deep in a jacuzzi full of merlot just watching this all and relishing it because these are a bunch of people who made his life so difficult when he was triing to be an effective speaker and work with the reality of a political system that had two parties and checks and balances. And what did he call jim he called Jim Jordan A Legislative terrorist and apologies to people dealing with real terrorism in another part of the world. In addition to what nia and fl gloria just said, he is too controversial and he is too toxic. If he became the next speaker of the house there would be a political backlash. This is what republican members of congress are saying to me, they are afraid they would lose the house. They would lose power. Theres one other person, i think, we need to discuss here and that is Kevin Mccarthy. Yes, Kevin Mccarthy who predicted jim jordan would win yesterday on the first ballot, just fyi. He also predicted he would win his speakership on the first ballot. Bring it on. He would be closer than jim jordan. He was only minus eight and jim jordan was minus 20, and i am told the numbers are going in the wrong direction. Kevin mccarthy supported jim jordan, he endorsed him and he voted for him, but my republican sources on the hill say behind the scenes, Kevin Mccarthy is not too sad about this because at the end of the day misery loves company. If he cant be the speaker why should jim jordan be the speaker . And this is all moving toward Patrick Mchenry as this compromise, and lets not forget, Kevin Mccarthy is the person that picked patrick mcm mchenry to be in this job. It was 2000 i dont even know the year and it was at some point over the last few years, i was talking to a democratic member of congress, and we were talking about the mccarthy era that was to come. It was before the republicans took dcontrol, but we all saw what was happening and she told me, this democratic member of congress that as soon as mccarthy was elected he was going to have to worry about jim jordan. I mean, it was not a secret. He brought him in. It was not a secret that he was going to have to watch jim jordan over his shoulder the entire time. Not steve scalise, that jim jordaj jordan was the threat, and im not sure what Machine Eggations going on behind the scenes and this democrat was getting this from her republican friends. It was always kind known within the caucus and the Democratic Caucus that jim jordan was the threat. This is Like High School in a way because theres also this bad blood between mccarthy and scalise and theres bad blood between jordan and scalise and who likes whom and who can get along with whom and whos going to help you get elected . And i think youre right about mccarthy. I think mccarthys kind of sitting back and saying, you know, ive got about as many votes as jim jordan did oh, weve got more. Right. And im not, you know, and im not the speaker so theres no solution to this problem other than going in a totally different direction. But the issue youre right about all those players and the relationships, but what is being put on display for the American People is the Republican Party incapable of governing. That is what is being put on display and yes, this is a problem for the Republican Party to solve, but its obviously impacting every american no matter which party youre in because the House Of Representatives is not open for business and you saw in israel, President Biden talking about an unprecedented request for aid to israel that hes putting to congress and theres not a functioning congress. And not a funkctioning legislative press. What you see is President Biden saying goodbye to officials in tel aviv as he is getting ready to depart and getting on Air Force One following a trip that was successful in one regard with israel and unsuccessful in the sense that all of arab leaders with whom he was planning on meeting canceled the trip and canceled their part of the trip. On the right, they are taking attendance just like they do in the beginning of the day in grammar school. They are doing that in the House Of Representatives because they are trying to see who is there so they know what exactly the threshold is in terms of how many votes jim jordan needs to achieve to win The Speakership which we do not anticipate he will do on this second ballot for The Speakership in this latest incarnation of republicans in disarray. Well have more cnn special live coverage after we squeeze in this quick commercial break. Well be right back. At any moment the u. S. House of representatives, the republicans in the House Of Representatives will give it another go. We expect Nomination Speeches to start soon and jim jordan will get another up or down vote on whether republicans want him to use the speakers gavel. Well go live to the house floor the second that starts, but first on to israel and gaza. The white house National Security council is siding with tel aviv in a global fight to assign blame for the horrifying hospital tragedy. Sara sidner is live for us in tel aviv. Sara, President Biden is now on his way back to washington, d. C. , after a consequential day. Yeah, a very consequential day. If you look at what he did here. First, he stood very, very strong with israel making that unequivocal. Then he talked about the humanitarian aid that he says is being worked out to try to get aid into gaza where you have some 2 million people, more than 50 or about 50 of the population are children there under the age of 18 who are suffering without water. Theyre suffering without electricity. They do not have fuel and theyre running out of food, and so that is one of the things that theyre trying to get into the country with some caveats. I did just about an hour ago speak with the Prime Ministers Office Spokesperson here in tel aviv. The israeli Prime Ministers spokesperson and she told me that deal had not yet been completely made and theyre working on the details of some sort of a corridor and that some of this humanitarian aid would go in and the humanitarian aid is getting desperate by the hour. I do want to go to ben wedeman in Southern Lebanon where weve been watching protests all day long and theyve gotten quite big and we saw fires in lebanon, as well. Stoked by the Hospital Blast that the president now says that he has seen evidence and he is siding with israel. Israel saying they were not responsible for the blast. It was the Islamic Jihad and the other terror group in gaza that was responsible for it by accidentally firing off an errant rocket. Ben, what are you learning about whats happening there in response to that Hospital Blast . Sara, we saw a large rally by hezbollah in the Southern Suburbs of beirut, but most eyes were on the town of aukar about eight miles north of beirut near the u. S. Embassy where Hundreds Of Protesters Clasheded with Lebanese Security forces, protesters throwing rocks and Firing Fireworks in the direction of the police. The Police Responding with water canons and tear gas and later it appears that the army was sent in and basically broke up the protest and now it appears to be over, but tensions are running high in lebanon. The u. S. State department has said that Family Members of u. S. Embassy staff and nonemergency personnel can leave the country given the precarious situation. France has advised its nationals not to travel to lebanon. Saudi arabia just put out an Annou Announcement advising all saudis in lebanon to leave the country immediately. Sara . I mean, youve been in that region, and you have watched these things explode into a much bigger issue and there is always a fear that there was going to be a battle coming from the north into israel, as well. Thank you so much for giving us the details on all that is happening there. Lets go to Nic Robertson. He is in sderot very near the gaza border and the closest point from Sderot To Gaza is about 2500 feet. It sounds like theres some sort of munitions going off. Can you tell me whats happening there . Yes, sara, i think what we are hearing at the moment are artillery strikes coming from israeli howitzer positions into gaza and judging by the time between the explosion of the Howitzer Firing out and the detonation on the ground, theyre firing a relative short distance and another detonation there. So some of them there was the explosion with it. So there is a degree of artillery fire. Its not unusual. Perhaps its a little close range, more than normal in term of how far the guns are firing, but this is this has become sort of background normal. No air strikes at the moment and there are definitely these Artillery Pieces and howitzers appear to be firing into gaza. Yeah. The war continues for sure there as the question about the timing and when there may or may not be a Ground Offensive which initially seemed imminent. We are waiting to see What Happens Next. Thank you so much for all of your reporting there, Nic Robertson on the border with gaza. Ill send it back to jake in washington. Thanks, sara. Well come to you in a couple of hours. We heard from the white house National Security council which asserts that the current u. S. Intelligence about the gaza Hospital Blast backs up the assertions from israel that israel was not responsible. This is from the nscs adrian watson, while we continue to collect information, the intercepts and open Source Information is that israel is not responsible for the explosion at the hospital in gaza yesterday, unquote. Lets bring in the spokesman for the Israeli Defense forces, lieutenant peter lerner. Lieutenant colonel lerner, what can you tell us about what intelligence the Israelis Have shared with President Biden and with the u. S. That backs up the idf claim that it was Islamic Jihad that was responsible for the rocket hitting the hospital . Well, you can imagine that we shared more than weve shared with the public and obviously what is shared Behind Closed Doors and will remain Behind Closed Doors and its obviously along the same themes and understanding. We utilized our intelligence and our Operational Data and our aerial footage in order to identify exactly what happened last night and we came to the conclusion and asserted that the idf was noonsible for the strike, for the explosion in the Al Ahli Hospital and it was a palestinian Islamic Jihad rocket that malfunctioned and fell on the hospital, and indeed, the idf established initiated a highlevel investigation and established that there were no operations, no strikes by the idf and not by the air force and not by Ground Forces and not by naval forces. We found that the radar track the stra jectry of the rockets and that indeed they went over some ten rockets that were fired in order to kill israelis and one fell short and malfunctioned on its way to israel, but it malfunctioned and fell inside israel, inside the Al Ahli Hospital and indeed, it caused all of that damage and finally, the communications that our intelligence intercepted which was just one source that we shared with you, but we cross referenced that and crosschecked that and indeed when you hear the Hamas Terrorists communicating between one another saying palestinian Islamic Jihad launched rockets and one of them fell in al ahl basically leaves no question who was behind it. Im encouraged by the fact that the u. S. Is confirming this independently, but we are certain of what we know. There does appear to be al jazeera footage of missiles im sorry, rockets launched around that time. Has that been verified as legitimate . Yes, of course. They were broadcasting it live, and i actually have an image here of the of the launch of the broadcast and this is a Screen Caption of what they did, and you can see this is at just 6 just 6 59 and you see the al jazeera emblem and that fell in the hospital. Its online and the twitter feed and you can see for yourself. You didnt need investigate it. All you need on do is flip the channel and see it as it happened. This is the sad story of of things being prematurely reported based on hamas saying this is an israeli strike, and that is one of the lessons that we need to understand. Hamas is an organization that will butcher babies in their bedrooms. They will have no problem lying to the media. Protests, nonetheless, are spreading throughout the arab world. It appears that the leaders of many arab nations canceled their visits with President Biden based on this misinformation from the Palestinian Health authority which, as you know, is controlled by hamas. Yeah. They are no different from the north Korean Ministry of health. This is precisely the problem and we are listening to what hamas is saying. No matter how we feel about the tragedy that are happening to the people and taking any sort of information from hamas is just part of their propaganda campaign. When they distribute a video of mia schem who was abducted in anticipation to try and share a humane perspective of hamas, theyre actually engaging in psychological warfare and psychological terrorism. So this is what theyre trying to do and we need to be cautious about accepting anything they say, and i would say there should not be a source of relevance for anybody in these crazy times. We are taking our operation and we are moving and we are now in day 12 now, at the end of day 12 here. We are moving forward and continuing to strike hamas wherever they are, and it is a very, very challenging military operation. Lieutenant colonel lerner, just one more question on the Rafah Crossing. Obviously, theres been a huge dip diplomatic effort to try to get people out, especially palestinianamericans out of gaza through the Rafah Crossing and trying to get humanitarian supplies in from egypt through the Rafah Crossing. Have there been any advances, any progress made in those efforts . Im sorry, i was just getting information and a report that there are more rocket fires towards the center of israel. Im sorry for that. Regarding rafah, i cant confirm that theres been any progress to my knowledge. I know the dip mas are continuing to negotiate. The warriors the war fighters are continuing in their operation to destroy hamas and the diplomats are doing theirs their job in diplomacy to try to find the right method of engaging on the issue of humanitarian effort. Our role currently as the idf is to try to differentiate between the civilian population and the noncombatants and the Terrorist Organization and that is what we are doing by telling them to get out of harms way and the Palestinians Ed to get out and listen to our instructions. We created today and we establish a Hum An Tearian Zone in the gaza trip in order to try to create some confidence in the people and the area, the Southern Gaza strip today is of course, under stress because there is a huge influx of people into the gaza into Southern Gaza, but from our Perspective Order to differentiate from the civilian population, theyre trying to exasperate and include civilians on both sides of this conflict into into casuallies and fatalities. There are 200, almost 200 israelis being held hostage now by hamas, and i would say there are 2 million palestinians being held hostages by hamas. I want to bring in christiane amanpour. President biden spoke passionately in support of israel in the last hour. What was your reaction to his comments in tel aviv . Clearly, he went to support israel and he did speak very passionately, very personally and anecdotally about the specific pain that these victims and their families and including the families of hostages, including the hostages and made sure that everybody understood that also 31 americans had been killed and some are being held hostage. He also did say that this idea which he was people in the region and the palestinians hope that he would be able to unlock the humanitarian blockade, and this is a major problem. Youve just been talking about it with the idf spokesman and were going to be talking with the head of the u. N. Operations in about an hour on my program, but this is a huge, huge issue and he did say, the president that he had got some kind of commitment from the Netanyahu Government that they would be working on it, but you heard the spokesman say nothing as far as he knows is being wrapped up. This was something that was the very least in the region that he expected to take away, given that he was unable to meet with the arab leaders because they counselled on him and that was unprecedented and you dont counsel on an american president ever until today and so the situation is is massively charged and we are waiting to see where it goes from here . You called this incident an unmitigated disaster. Actually, i didnt say that. I said it was an unmitigated disaster that he was walking into because of all that was around it, and what was around it is he landed was the attack, the crisis, the hit, the explosion on the hospital. Now the u. S. Itself says it has independent confirmation that it was a palestinian Islamic Jihad misfired rocket as the Israelis Have. I think they base their opinion and intelligence on the intercepts that the Israelis Have made public and, of course, its a disaster by any stretch of the imagination not to be able to meet face to face with leaders who matter. These are leaders who are not just allies of the United States, but of israel, jordan, egypt, the Palestinian Authority president and how to try to figure out a way out of this which there doesnt seem to be any effort to deescalate and no room for it and no mood for it, but what is the next step . What is the next phase . And we even heard from the egyptians that they hoped that the President Biden in consultation could somehow, you know, hold out some kind of a pr proposal or proposition that at the end of this there is some kind of longterm solution to the big context of this which is the ongoing, unresolve issue between the israelis and the palestinians. Yeah. If do you think that the leaders, these arab leaders canceled their trip because of what happened at the hospital in gaza . Yes. And if it is true that the israelis were not responsible, then what does that say of the willingness of these arab leaders to just automatically believe whatever the palestinians say even if what theyre saying isnt accurate . So this is a really important conundrum. First and foremost, we know it is because of that because the jordanian ambassador To Washington Last Night basically said this is not the moment, and the palestinian president said he could not go, mahmoud abbas, to any such meeting under these circumstances. The issue is no matter what the israelis say, now what the u. S. Say in the beginning before there was any, quote, unquote well, was there an investigation and they came to their conclusion, it ignited the arab world. Yeah. Theyve seen so many times, and because, and im sorry to say this, because in the past the israeli idf has not been honest about what actually happened. Look at shien, i know we keep talking about it, but it was one of the most recent denials and they accused Palestinian Militants and they apologized for it and admitted they might have done it, the same with gaza and the same with the killing of an unarmed teenager on the west bank who they say was armed and all of this leads to distrust in that world. So, you know, this issue the u. S. Seems to have confirmed that before that and potentially What Happens Next the tendency is for rage on the street when you can see gaza which is full of civilians being essentially carpet bombed, despite what the israelis say and are urged to, you know, try to make a difference between militants, terrorists and civilians. All right, christiane amanpour. Thank you very much. Much more from israel throughout this hour, but in washington, we are about to feebind out can or cannot change in 24 hours. You are looking live at the house floor. Soon we are going to see nominating speeches for the speaker of the house. Jim jordan still wants the gavel and asked his allies, though, and they will split on whether he can actually muster enough votes to get that gavel and theyre divided in how long the Ohio Republican should keep trying to win it. I want to go straight to manu raju who has been talking to members including one who had the gavel, but was dethroned. That, of course, is Kevin Mccarthy. What did he tell you, manu . He is still very angry at the members who voted him out of The Speakership and those eight republicans led by matt gaetz, Criticizing Gaetz in particular for fundraising off of everything that went down here and also not saying explicitly about whether he would support the idea of Approved Voting for a resolution to empower Patrick Mchenry to oversee legislative business. That idea is now picking up steam. Mccarthy suggests that mchenry has the power himself to do just that without the house taking action, but indicating that he still supports jim jordan as speaker even as he took a swipe at his critics. Think of the challenge of why were here. Every single democrat with the crazy eights who were led by gaetz put us in this mess and then he was fundraising last night off of this . It was the democrats who ran to make an argument right after ward that this person would have no power. They want total chaos. I think thats wrong. I think you shouldnt have to do a resolution that mchenry can carry this on as we elect jim jordan our speaker. Indicating there that he is not saying one way or the other if he will vote for that resolution to empower Patrick Mchenry, but that seems where this could very well be heading and we expect this vote on the house floor, jim jordan to fail, far short of the 217 votes he needs to be elected speaker and potentially losing more than the 20 republicans he lost yesterday. Jordan is indicating he could potentially go to a third ballot and we expect more republicans to vote against him and dana, what does jim jordan do . Does he step aside . Jordan told us a few moments earlier that he believes the house should vote on the idea of leching Patrick Mchenry to put that question to a test within the gop or the democrats in the house. The question is is that where it will end up if jordan decides to withdraw . Manu, thank you so much. As you were talking to me i was told that our colleague annie grayer has spotted jim jordan and mccarthy having a conversation. Boy, we wish we had those cameras before Kevin Mccarthy was made speaker and maybe we could do some lipreading. Here to talk about all of this is Scott Jennings and ashley allison. Scott, i want to take a step back because if youre not familiar, sort of intimately familiar with the ecosystem not just of the congress, but specifically of the House Republican conference, you might be sort of scratching your head and asking what is going on even more than the people who were actually a part of that conference and when i say that, what i mean is ever since ive been covering congress which has been a couple of decades, its grown even more to the point which im going to make which is that they have to get things out of their system. They have to get to the point where they see no other road, but the obvious road that all of us are seeing which is at this point, jim jordan doesnt look like he was going to be speaker and perhaps the guy that has the gavel temporarily, Patrick Mchenry should have it. Can you talk about that and why that isnt happening like this, if that seems to be where this is headed . Its not in their nature and its not in the nature of the conservative wing of the conference to give up. Their whole brand is lets fight. Lets fight about everything and even when youve got fewer votes and lets keep fighting and keep trying to deny the reality and what you wind up with is just another episode of monkeys getting am rouse with footballs starring House Republicans, and until you get tired of that show which is coming soon based on what im hearing, you will have to continue to go through this chaos. This Patrick Mchenry business is fascinating. He is one of mccarthys top guys that helped him get The Speakership, and if this whole thing wiends up with him as beig assistant, which is not in the constitution, this will be the biggest circle jerk in the history of jerks. To have the guy back as a temporary speaker and if youre a conservative and you have followed jim jordan and youve followed these guys and you want them, remember, youre the mark here. There was no plan. They had no plan. They threw mccarthy overboard without any plan whatsoever of what to do next and so if you think about this means with the conservative cause. How will you beat joe biden without a plan . They had no plan for this let alone the broader issues. And i just want to be careful because we are going to see the actual vote, the second vote soon and we dont know whats going to happen until it happens. We are talking based on the House Republicans, i know that youre talking to and im talking to about what their expectation is. Jim jordan lost 20 republicans yesterday. The fear among the jordan camp is that he could lose more, and so the question is when it comes down to it, as a democrat, ashley, what are the democrats going to do . They made very clear it is not up to them to it wasnt up to them to save Kevin Mccarthy. It is not up to them to elect a House Republican, but th question about these temporary powers, they could potentially vote to help give republican patrick mchen rethose powers, right . Absolutely. And i think if you look at what Hakeem Jeffries has said is theyre not going to support a jim jordan as speaker because he is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum in terms of conservative and democrats, and they dont have the responsibility. If the roles were flipped, republicans wouldnt most likely do this for democrats, however what im hearing from his office and he said publicly is that they are willing to work in a bipartisan manner, and they have. They showed that with keeping the government open and that may be with empowering congressman Patrick Mchenry, and i think its because they trust him. If theyre that they say if you give me your word, we might not agree on every policy, but when we talk about cutting deals, youll keep your end of the bargain. The question will will still remain, can republicans keep their act together. Hearing you talk now, you sound like we were democrats together with your frustration with the republicans. You are in so much trouble. I want to go to adam kinzinger, who left the House Of Representatives because, as made very clear, when we spoke yesterday, because of the kind of cays yos that were seeing and because of the right part of your conference, who from your perspective, they are determined to continue the chaos. You have been in these meetings and conversations. Can you talk about what were going to see . Yeah, its not fun for anybody in there. I was in these meetings where it felt like we were about to go to fist to cuffs, and that was like four years ago before it was as crazy as it was. So theres some intense anger. I guess i i dont understand jim jordans reason. Maybe he needs to go to a second round, maybe a third or fourth, if hes going to lose more people, except they are going to try to bully folks. What is a likely possible scenario here in this goat rodeo, to continue Scott Jennings analogies, they give Mchenry Temporary Powers and then jim jordan or somebody continueses to pressure the 20 or 30 until that january 2nd date, until he gets to the point where everybody has been warn down and broken down. This thing started with 50 people saying they would never vote for jim jordan. I was impressed we got to 20, but 30 collapsed in a point of 12 hours because Sean Hannitys booker reached out to them. Thats the amount of pressure they could take. They are going to be ticked off. Even though they collapsed in a heap of fear, they are not happy they had to collapse in that heap. It will be interesting to watch. You could have a camera in that room, that would be mustwatch tv. If you can work on that, let us know. I want to let you viewers what they are seeing the on the careen is the still gatt erg, still doing a roll call so everybody is there. So we have not yet seen the actual action begin. Congressman kinzinger, we are told that today the Norminating Speech for jim jordan will be tom cole, republican of oklahoma, who is a very conservative, but certainly a longtime friend of the leadershfloo the question now occurs on the election of the speaker. The tellers will please come forward to take their seats. As we just heard Patrick Mchenry, the tempt speaker introduce what we expect to see that expectation is were going to see a nominating speech for jim jordan, once again, to be speaker. If the tellers will please come forward and take their seats. The gentleman, the gentle lady from alabama. We expect the nominations are now in order. The chair recognizes the gentleman from oklahoma, mr. Cole. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, i rise for the purpose of placing a nomination, the name of the honorable jim jordan for the position of speaker of the house at the direction of republicans. [ applause ] the gentleman is recognized. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Two weeks and one day ago, i was on this house floor and in this chamber defending my very good friend and our former speaker mr. Mccarthy from an effort to vacate the chair. In the course of that speech, i made the remark that those who did this, whether Intention Fally or unintentionally, were going to put the congress in a state of chaos and the country into a state of uncertainty. I think the last two weeks vindicated that observation. We have a chance today to end that chaos and to end that uncertainty. Now when these races happen, theres always a lot of hard things said on both sides of the aisle. Theres a lot of Finger Pointing that goes on. I dont intend to be involved in any of that today. I think the decision in front of us is far, far too important for that. But i am very proud, very proud to place a nomination the name of our good friend, my good friend, our republican candidate for speaker the honorable jim jordan of ohio. I have the privilege of knowing jim jordan for a long time. I have been in congress for a long time, so for his entire period of the house, i have had the honor of serving with my friend. Now my friend is not exactly a shrinking violet. You dont win the National Championships in college, you dont come to this floor with a sincere set of believes and desire to make a change and be shy about it. My friend is not a shy person. But i have learned some things about him over the years. Hes a person of absolute personal integrity. I have never once had to question something that he told me. Hes an honorable man. Also, i think we all know hes a pretty direct man, too. I dont think anybody in here of any issue or substance who you have to guess where jim jordan is going to stand. He doesnt deceive, he simply tells you straight up, this is what i believe. This is why i think its the right thing to do for the country and thats what im going to accomplish and im going to work with you to do it. Now the other thing i think we found in the last couple weeks is away it takes to be a speaker. The one thing i know never having been one and never aspired to be one, that it takes a spine of steel to do this job. My friend has that kind of determination. Has that kind of character, has that kind of spine. And i think the next speaker is going to need that quality, and i know my friend has it in great abundance. Now if youre a republican, it ought to be a pretty easy decision, my friends. This is somebody who believes what we believe and has fought for and shown that over and over again. I first got to know him, a the lot of his focus was on spending. Thats exactly where the focus of this house ought to be. Now hes laid out a plan, not just a shortterm plan as to how to deal with the appropriations process, im an appropriator. I think i know that thats not the root of the problem. Unlike any other speaker we have had, hes had the courage to talk about a longterm plan and to get at the real drivers of debt. We all know what they are. We all know its social security, we all know its medicare and medicaid. No president of either side has been willing to deal with this. No speaker has been willing to deal with this. My friend, our former Colleague Delay Knee and i i offered a plan to go back and do 1983 what we did then and address social security. We never can get any help. This is a guy that wants t
